Abstract:Nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2) photocatalyst was prepared by acid–sol method using tetrabutyl titanate and ethanol, which appeared to be anatase by XRD analysis. The wastewater containing azo dye acid red B was then subjected to photocatalytic degradation with photocatalyst TiO2 and UV as light source in a slurry photocatalytic membrane reactor, which included a double layer cylindrical photocatalytic reaction zone and a plate frame membrane separation part. Two kinds of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes PVDF700 and PAN700 were applied and the combined process with photocatalysis was operated by a continuous re-circulating mode during treatment. At first, the adsorption characteristic of the titanium dioxide catalyst under different pH values was analyzed and the optimal operation condition of the photocatalytic process was achieved by changing TiO2 dose and initial concentration of the dye. Then the performance of photocatalyst separation process by ultrafiltration (UF) was investigated. It was found that the degradation of acid red B was followed by first-order kinetics and the efficiency of photocatalysis can be evaluated by the initial reaction rate. Finally, the conglomeration and hydrophilizion phenomena by TiO2 in the coupling system and its effect to different ultrafiltration membranes were analyzed.

Abstract:Here, the nanometer anatase and rutile titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) powders were introduced to act as the sonocatalysts during the ultrasonic degradation of azo dye-acid red B which was chosen as model compound. The ultrasound of low power was used as an irradiation source to induce TiO(2) particles performing catalytic activity. It was found that the processes of sonocatalytic degradation were different between nanometer anatase TiO(2) and nanometer rutile TiO(2). For nanometer anatase TiO(2) catalyst, the acid red B was mainly oxidated by the holes on the surface of nanometer anatase TiO(2) particles, so that the decolorization and degradation happened at the same time. For the nanometer rutile TiO(2) catalyst, the acid red B was mainly oxidated by the *OH radicals from the ultrasonic cavitation, so that the decolorization of azo bond takes place primarily, and then the degradation of naphthyl ring does. The intermediates of acid red B in the presence of nanometer anatase and rutile TiO(2) powders have been monitored by UV-vis spectra and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. All experiments indicated that the degradation effect of acid red B in the presence of nanometer anatase TiO(2) powder was obviously better than that in the presence of nanometer rutile TiO(2) powder. Hence, the method of sonocatalytic degradation for organic pollutants in the presence of nanometer anatase TiO(2) powder is expected to be promising as an advisable choice for the treatment of organic wastewaters in future.
Photocatalytic degradation of azo dye using nano-ZrO2/UV/Persulfate: Response surface modeling and optimization

Abstract:Dyes have always been considered in the context of recalcitrant organic pollutants in water. The present research has focused on the decolorization of Direct Blue 71 (DB71) using photocatalysis process of nano-ZrO2/UV/ Persulfate. Response surface method with central composite design was applied to determine the effects of four main factors (time, ZrO2 dosage, persulfate dosage and pH) on decolorization of DB71. The results indicated that the obtained quadratic model had a high R-squared coefficient based on the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Time had the highest effect (45.5%) on decolorization of DB71. The optimum condition predicted for complete decolorization was pH=7, 0.4 g ZrO2, 0.75 mM persulfate and 40 min reaction time. Verification experiments confirmed that there was good agreement between the experimental and predicted responses. The studied photocatalytic process could oxidize and destruct the structure of the DB71, and average oxidation state (AOS) significantly increased from −1.5 to +1.33, indicating the presence of more oxidized by-products and, consequently, improvement of biodegradability. The quenching tests showed that sulfate radical was the major agent in DB71 decolorization. It can be concluded that nano-ZrO2/ UV/Persulfate is a very effective process for decolorization of colored wastewater.

Abstract:Because of the extensive use and excessive release of various dyes, the economical and efficient methods for treatment of wastewater and cleanup of dyes are needed. This study focuses on the sonocatalytic degradation of Acid Red B in aqueous solution assisted with different inorganic oxidants. The objective is to determine the potential degradation feasibility for Acid Red B and other some dyes in US/ZnO/oxidant systems. In this work, an integrated US/ZnO/oxidant system was used to degrade the Acid Red B in aqueous solution, and the concentration of Acid Red B was measured by UV–vis spectra at regular time intervals. It is found that some inorganic oxidants can effectively assist the sonocatalytic degradation of Acid Red B in the presence of nano-sized ZnO powder and the effect of oxidants changes as the order of KClO4>KClO3>Ca(ClO)2. Otherwise, some operational parameters such as ultrasonic irradiation time, reaction kinetics, solution pH value, oxidant kind and concentration and systematic temperature have been examined. The possible degradation mechanism of Acid Red B was also presented. It is demonstrated that the degradation of Acid Red B was very obvious in US/ZnO/oxidants (US/ZnO/KClO4, US/ZnO/KClO3 and US/ZnO/Ca(ClO)2) systems. In addition, the method of sonocatalytic degradation assisted with oxidants has many advantages such as convenience, safety, economy and high efficiency. If it can be applied extensively, the efficiency of wastewater treatment will be enhanced greatly.
Effectiveness of photocatalysis of Fe78Si9B13/TiO2 composites for acid orange 7 degradation

Abstract:Owing to the growing contamination of waterways by azo dyes, the intermediate chemicals formed when these colors break down in anaerobic settings by microbes are carcinogenic and teratogenic, endangering both human health and the environment. As a result, in the realm of environmental remediation, the best way to remove azo dyes in wastewater has recently become a focus of research. In this work, the target degradant, Acid Orange 7 (AO7), was used to prepare Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 /TiO 2 composites for use as photocatalysts hydrothermally. The samples' surface morphology and crystal structure were assessed using fluorescence spectroscopy (PL), UV-visible diffuse reflectance (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). To investigate the effects of varying solution pH, Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 composite volume, hydrothermal temperature, hydrothermal time, and catalyst dosage on the photocatalytic degradation performance of AO7, a 500 W xenon lamp was employed as a light source to replicate visible light. The findings demonstrated that the composites' highest photocatalytic activity was attained under the following conditions: solution pH = 3.0, visible light irradiation period of 120 min, hydrothermal temperature of 180 °C, hydrothermal time of 24 h, Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 composite volume of 5%, and catalyst dose of 0.8 g·L −1 . The AO7 solution degraded at a rate of 94.36%, the mineralization rate was 43.71%, and the reaction rate constant was 0.0232 min −1 . A suitable concentration of Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 composite can decrease the TiO 2 forbidden bandwidth, stimulate the absorption of visible light, and impede photogenerated electron-hole complexation. Fe 78 Si 9 B 13 /TiO 2 , which can be employed as a catalyst for the effective treatment of dye wastewater, is furthermore distinguished by great cyclic stability and high catalytic efficiency.

Abstract:The hydrogen peroxide role in photocatalytic degradation of an anionic azo dye, Acid Orange 7 (AO7), was investigated in a slurry reactor. Commercial ZnO nanoparticles with an average size between 10 to 30 nm were used as catalysts. Optimum conditions for different parameters, including dye concentration (10-100 mg/L), catalyst concentration (0.1-0.5 g/L), and pH (5-10), were determined first in the absence of H2O2. Changes in the COD were measured for the optimum condition. The impact of adding hydrogen peroxide at different concentrations to the system operating at optimum conditions was investigated. It was observed that 0.416 mM hydrogen peroxide increased the system's efficiency and decreased reaction time by 40 min. The reaction followed first-order kinetic. Hydrogen peroxide alone did not contribute to oxidizing the contaminant, and its positive impact was attributed to decreasing electron-hole recombination in the photocatalytic process. Not only can the hydrogen peroxide-assisted photocatalytic process decrease retention time in treatment units, but it can also result in more contaminant degradation. Therefore, it can reduce the treatment cost.

Rapid Removal of Azophloxine Via Catalytic Degradation by A Novel Heterogeneous Catalyst under Visible Light

Abstract:Azo dyes are the most widely used synthetic dyes in the printing and dyeing process. However, the discharge of untreated azo dyes poses a potential threat to aqueous ecosystems and human health. Herein, we fabricated a novel heterogeneous catalyst: activated-carbon-fiber-supported ferric alginate (FeAlg-ACF). Together with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and visible light, this photocatalytic oxidation system was used to remove an azo dye—azophloxine. The results indicated that the proposed catalytic oxidation system can remove 100% of azophloxine within 24 min, while under the same system, the removal rates were only 92% and 84% when ferric alginate was replaced with ferric citrate and ferric oxalate, respectively, which showed the superiority of FeAlg-ACF. The degradation of azophloxine is achieved by the active radicals (SO4•− and •OH) released from PMS and persistent free radicals from activated carbon fiber. Moreover, due to ferric alginate’s highly intrinsic photosensitivity, visible radiation can further enhance the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) processes. After 24 min of treatment, the total organic carbon of the azophloxine solution (50 μmol/L) decreased from 1.82 mg/L to 79.3 μg/L and the concentration of nitrate ions increased from 0.3 mg/L to 8.6 mg/L. That is, up to 93.5% of azophloxine molecules were completely degraded into inorganic compounds. Consequently, potential secondary contamination by intermediate organic products during catalytic degradation was prohibited. The azophloxine removal ratio was kept almost constant after seven cycles, indicating the recyclability and longevity of this system. Furthermore, the azophloxine removal was still promising at high concentrations of Cl−, HCO3−, and CO32−. Therefore, our proposed system is potentially effective at removing dye pollutants from seawater. It provides a feasible method for the development of efficient and environmentally friendly PMS activation technology combined with FeAlg-ACF, which has significant academic and application value.
Study on the Degradation Process of Photo-Assisted Electro-Catalytic Degradation of Azo Dye Acid Orange Ⅱ

Abstract:TiO_ 2 modified β-PbO_ 2 electrode,which was characterized by its properties of electro-catalytic oxidation and photocatalytic oxidation (PE), was used for the degradation of Acid Orange Ⅱ by photo-assisted electro-catalytic process, electro-catalytic oxidation process and photocatalytic oxidation process. Their degradation performances were monitored by UV-Vis spectra and HPLC analyses. The degradation products were determined by FTIR and GC-MS. It was proved that the accumulation of the highly toxic quinonic compounds only occurred in the process of electro-catalytic oxidation. In the process of PE, the accumulation of the quinonic compounds was largely inhibited by photocatalytic oxidation. The results revealed that the removal of TOC in PE process was 1.56 times of the sum of the other two processes and a significant synergetic effect was observed. The same degradation pathway was followed by the three processes, which involved the producing of quinonic compounds and the subsequent organic acids.

Abstract:Clean water is a necessity for all life to survive and flourish. However, natural waters are being continuously contaminated due to the release of waste streams in water. Hence, it is important to remove pollutants from wastewater to fulfill human needs. Conventional treatment methods are neither efficient nor economical for wastewaters that especially contain refractory toxic pollutants. This requires novel techniques like Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), that may successfully degrade persistent micropollutants more efficiently. In this study, an azo dye Acid Red 1 was removed by three AOPs, namely Photocatalytic oxidation, Ozonation and Photocatalytic Ozonation, by employing heterogenous catalysts. TiO 2 was used as photocatalyst, whereas Fe-Zeolite has been further added as Ozonation catalyst. The study revealed that photocatalysis degraded only 28% Acid red dye after 15 min, whereas for ozonation, the degradation percentage was 95% in same time. In combined photocatalytic ozonation process using TiO 2 , 95% degradation was achieved in just 9 min and treatment time further reduced to 5 min when Fe-zeolite was added. Optimization studies for initial concentration, UV intensity and catalyst loading were performed. Finally, rate constants and Electrical Energy per Order (EEO) values were determined for all AOPs, and mechanism was proposed.
Electrochemically Assisted Photocatalytic Degradation of Orange Ii: Influence of Initial Ph Values

Abstract:The effect of initial pH values in solution was studied in the process of electrochemically assisted photocatalytic degradation (EAPD) of an azo-dye Orange II using a β-PbO2 electrode modified by TiO2. The removal of color and total organic carbon (TOC) from the simulated dye wastewater was experimentally investigated at pH 2.29 and 11.52. The degradation products were examined by means of HPLC, UV–vis and FTIR spectra analyses. Similar color removal rate was achieved at pH 2.29 and 11.52, but the removal of TOC at pH 2.29 was 20.0% higher than that at pH 11.52. The dye was oxidized the most completely at pH 2.29 than at 11.52 and 6.88. There was a new absorbance peak at ca. 255nm generated at ca. 40min only at pH 11.52, which was ascribed to the quinonic compounds resulted from 1-amino-2-naphtol. A reductive degradation pathway by reductive species such as active electrons was proposed, which only led to the removal of color in parallel with the oxidative degradation pathway. Hole process was proved to be the dominating process at pH 2.29 and the effect of the reductive species was also significant at pH 11.52. Initial pH values were proved to have only influenced the degradation pathways to some extent, and therefore resulted in the disparity of the removal of color and TOC. High mineralization rate was still achieved in spite of the initial pH values in solution due to the prevailing photocatalytic oxidation mechanism.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to propose a new catalyst for catalytic ozonation of acid orange 7 (AO7) dye in aqueous solutions. CoFe 2 O 4 @Biochar catalyst was synthesized, prepared, and used in a heterogeneous catalytic ozonation process (COP) for AO7 removal. The characteristics of synthetized nanoparticles were investigated through the following equipment: x-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) and energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analyses. The results showed that the process offered a sufficient efficiency for removal of 150 and 200 mg/L concentrations of AO7. Moreover, CO 3 2- , NO 3 - , Cl - and PO 4 3- anions had a decreasing effect on the efficiency. The results of the scavenger experiments showed that the hydroxyl radical and ozone oxidants played the primary role for decomposition of the pollutants. The removal efficiency of total organic carbon (TOC) was 99% after 120 min by COP which was 44% more than the Single Ozonation Process (SOP). COP also caused the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) by 92% after 360 min. Based on the results, the COP with CoFe 2 O 4 @Biochar catalyst can be an effective and efficient process for treating textile wastewaters.

Hydrothermal-assisted sol–gel synthesis of Cd-doped TiO2 nanophotocatalyst for removal of acid orange from wastewater

Abstract:This research is based on synthesis of titania (TiO2) nanophotocatalyst followed by cadmium (Cd) doping to activate the photocatalyst in visible part of the light spectrum. Therefore, the Cd–TiO2 nanophotocatalyst was synthesized in various Cd/Ti molar ratios of 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 using hydrothermal-assisted sol–gel method. The characterization analyses of X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, brunauer-emmett-teller, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric-derivative thermogravimetric, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray were carried out to evaluate the physical, chemical, and optical properties of the catalysts. The X-ray diffraction analysis resulted a decrease in the crystallinity due to cadmium doping. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images have confirmed the nano-sized structure of the catalysts. The analysis also has demonstrated particle size distribution enhancement with a meaningful low average particle size for Cd/TiO2 (0.15) sample. This sample has represented the highest brunauer-emmett-teller surface area. According to energy dispersive X-ray dot mapping analysis, no aggregation was detected on the catalyst surface. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy analysis has indicated a moderate decrease in band gap, after Cd loading. The photocatalytic degradation of acid orange 7 dye from the synthetic wastewater was carried out to evaluate the photocatalytic activity. The most effective parameters on the process, such as pH, catalyst loading, and dye concentration, were investigated. According to the characterization analyses and degradation tests, Cd/TiO2 (0.15) was selected as a sample having best structural properties and photocatalytic activity. Finally, the experiments resulted the optimum conditions of pH = 2, catalyst loading of 1 g/L, and dye concentration of 10 mg/L, indicating 95 % of dye degradation after 120 min of experiment.Graphical AbstractThe electron–hole pair generation via transition of electron between the valence and conduction bands (band gap) is the fundamental of any photocatalytic process. After Cd doping, the conduction band position shifts toward the valence band. Then, a valence electron in narrow band gap photocatalyst needs lower energy of light to transfer to conduction band, it means that using light in higher wavelengths (visible light spectra) will be available. In photocatalytic wastewater treatment process, degradation occurs in two ways: the first mechanism is direct oxidation-reduction through electron–hole generation, and the second one would be the oxidation through produced reactive species such as hydroxyl radicals, this route of reaction organizes the major part of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In order to realize the proper treatment of wastewater containing azo dyes,a silica-base supported BaF2-nano-TiO2 composite (hereinafter called the composite) was prepared by a three-step synthetic procedure and utilized for the decolorization and degradation of orange Ⅱ in aqueous solution. It was found that the irradiation time and solution pH value was important parameter that ensured the degradation effect of γ-rays at low dose. The optimal doping ratio of BaF2 to nano-TiO2 was determined to be 1:1 (mBaF2:mTiO2). Furthermore, it was found that a highly reductive atmosphere (N2) favored the formation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH), which were responsible for the efficient degradation and mineralization of orange Ⅱ. The decolorization rate of the orange Ⅱ, Reactive black 5 and Reactive blue 222 dyes solution by the radiocatalysis system was 96.8%, 95.3% and 99.9%, respectively; and total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate of the orange Ⅱ, Reactive black 5 and Reactive blue 222 dyes solution achieved 92.5%, 40.2% and 98.6%, respectively. Thus, it was shown that the composite could be applied to the treatment of wastewater containing azo dye mixtures. The results of this study extend the technical applications of the TiO2 photocatalytic oxidation technology.
Photocatalytic degradation of Remazol Red B and Rhodamine B dyes using TiO2 nanomaterial: estimation of the effective operating parameters

Abstract:The presence of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including dyes in the aquatic ecosystem is of major concern worldwide because of their hazardous effect, and human and environmental risks. The degradation of conventional wastewater plants costs a lot, due to increased environmental restrictions. Using photocatalysis to remove (POPs) is a promising, effective and sustainable process. A simple one-step sol–gel procedure for degradation of Remazol Red B (RRB) and Rhodamine B (RhB) has been used to synthesize titanium dioxide photocatalyst. Various techniques, such as X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller, and parameters that influence the photodegradation process, including catalyst dose, pH, initial dye concentration, were used to study TiO2 photoactivity. The degradation of TiO2 via UV radiation for RRB and RhB after 75 min was 99.7% and 99.8% respectively. The photodegradation rates for two dyes using a Langmuir–Hinshelwood are shown pseudo-first-order. Besides, reactive species scavengers have been studied during degradation and the major species is OH• radicals. Photoluminescence experiments using terephthalic acid as a reference molecule determined OH• free radical formation during irradiation.

In this paper, the photocatalytic degradation of the dimethylmethane fluorescent dye, Auramine O (AO), was investigated in a heterogeneous aqueous solution with 100 nm anatase TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) under 365 nm light irradiation. The effect of irradiation time was systematically studied, and photolysis and adsorption of AO on TiO2 NPs were also evaluated using the same experimental conditions. The kinetics of AO photocatalytic degradation were pseudo-first order, according to the Langmuir–Hinshelwood model, with a rate constant of 0.048 ± 0.002 min‒1. A maximum photocatalytic efficiency, as high as 96.2 ± 0.9%, was achieved from a colloidal mixture of 20 mL (17.78 μmol L‒3) AO solution in the presence of 5 mg of TiO2 NPs. The efficiency of AO photocatalysis decreased nonlinearly with the initial concentration and catalyst dosage. Based on the effect of temperature, the activation energy of AO photocatalytic degradation was estimated to be 4.63 kJ mol−1. The effect of pH, additional scavengers, and H2O2 on the photocatalytic degradation of AO was assessed. No photocatalytic degradation products of AO were observed using UV–visible and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, confirming that the final products are volatile small molecules.

Abstract:Water decontamination still remains a major challenge to some developing countries not having centralized wastewater systems. Therefore, this study presents the optimization of photocatalytic degradation of Basic Blue 41 dye in an aqueous medium by an activated carbon (AC)-TiO2 photocatalyst under UV irradiation. The mesoporous AC-TiO2 synthesized by a sonication method was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy for crystal phase identification and molecular bond structures, respectively. The efficiency of the AC-TiO2 was evaluated as a function of three input variables viz. catalyst load (2–4 g), reaction time (15–45 min) and pH (6–9) by using Box-Behnken design (BBD) adapted from response surface methodology. Using color and turbidity removal as responses, a 17 run experiment matrix was generated by the BBD to investigate the interaction effects of the three aforementioned input factors. From the results, a reduced quadratic model was generated, which showed good predictability of results agreeable to the experimental data. The analysis of variance (ANOVA), signposted the selected models for color and turbidity, was highly significant (p < 0.05) with coefficients of determination (R2) values of 0.972 and 0.988, respectively. The catalyst load was found as the most significant factor with a high antagonistic impact on the process, whereas the interactive effect of reaction time and pH affected the process positively. At optimal conditions of catalyst load (2.6 g), reaction time (45 min), and pH (6); the desirability of 96% was obtained by a numerical optimization approach representing turbidity removal of 93% and color of 96%.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the removal of acid orange 7 (AO7) dye using NiO doped ZnO nanoparticles under sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. The characterization of catalyst was carried out via FTIR, SEM, XRD and XPS techniques. The result of XPS revealed that nickel was successfully incorporated in the ZnO matrix. In addition, artificial neural networks (ANN) were used to model the process and to generate useful predictions. A significant prediction model with R2 of 0.991 and adjusted R2 of 0.991 for sunlight Irradiation and with R2 of 0.981 and adjusted R2 of 0.980 for ultraviolet Irradiation were obtained from ANN. The obtained data indicated that there is a significant difference between the type of nanoparticles used in the dye removal. The dose of 0.8 g/l over a detention time of 90 min was able to remove 77% of the dye under sunlight and 93% under ultraviolet irradiation. The results showed that the synthesized nanoparticles could be utilized to photocatalytically degrade the dye at sunlight or using a UV lamp. Alhough there was a slight difference between the decomposition of this dye under sunlight and UV irradiation, using visible light at larger scale is more economical and generates less operational problems than UV light. Abstract:Wastewater treatment is an unavoidable necessity and requires immediate action with the aim of saving future generations from water crises and ensuring the sustainability of clean and drinkable water. In the present work, green synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) was carried out from fruit extract of Hylocereus undatus to observe its photocatalytic activity towards two azo dyes, namely, Metanil yellow and Orange II dye. IONPs served as an efficient photocatalyst for the degradation of Metanil yellow dye, and the reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The effect of the initial dye concentration, amount of photocatalyst added, and effect of pH on photocatalytic degradation of Metanil yellow and Orange II dye using IONPs was studied. The results were compiled to reveal the most effective conditions for degradation to occur. A computational study of two dyes using DFT (Density Functional Theory) calculations were also performed to calculate thermodynamic properties such as the free energy, dipole moment, HOMO-LUMO energy gap, chemical potential, global hardness, softness, global electrophilicity index, ionization potential, electron affinity, etc. These parameters were used to describe the reactivity of dye toward the active photocatalytic species responsible for the degradation of dye. Natural population analysis was also performed, and Fukui indices were also calculated to explain the possible attacking sites of dyes by active photocatalytic species.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are eco-friendly, and promising technology for treating dye containing wastewater. This study focuses on investigating the removal of methyl orange (MO), an azo dye, from a synthetic wastewater through the use of hydrodynamic cavitation (HC), both independently and in combination with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), as an external oxidant, as well as photocatalysis (PC) employing catalyst coated on glass fibers tissue (GFT). The examination of various operating parameters, including the pressure drop and the concentration of H 2 O 2 , was systematically conducted to optimize the degradation of MO. A per-pass degradation model was used to interpret and describe the experimental data. The data revealed that exclusive employment of HC using a vortex-based cavitation device at 1.5 bar pressure drop, resulted in a degradation exceeding 96 % after 100 passes, equivalent to 230 min of treatment (cavitation yield of 3.6 mg/kJ for HC), with a COD mineralization surpassing 12 %. The presence of a small amount of H 2 O 2 (0.01 %) significantly reduced the degradation time from 230 min to 36 min (16 passes), achieving a degradation of 99.8 % (cavitation yield of 6.77 mg/kJ for HC) with COD mineralization rate twice as much as HC alone, indicating a synergistic effect of 4.8. The degradation time was further reduced to 21 min by combining HC with PC using TiO 2 -coated glass fibers and H 2 O 2 , (cavitation yield of 11.83 mg/kJ for HC), resulting in an impressive synergistic effect of 9.2 and COD mineralization twice as high as the HC/H 2 O 2 system. The results demonstrate that HC based hybrid AOPs can be very effective for treating and mineralizing azo dyes in water.

Abstract:The influences of mass concentration of TiO2, carrier gas source and the initial pH value on the degradation efficiency of Acid Orange H in the combined application of gas-liquid gliding arc discharge with TiO2 photocatalysis were studied. Experimental results showed that in the fixed applied voltage (10 kV), power frequency (50 Hz) and the shortest electrode distance (3.5 mm) condition, the optimum degradation rate for 300 mg·L-1 Acid Orange II solution could be achieved at the TiO2 concentration of 1.0 g·L-1 with using oxygen as the carrier gas, and the initial pH value was acidic or basic. The effect of TiO2 concentration on the production of H2O2, O3 and OH· active species was also investigated. The enhancement of Acid Orange II degradation rate could be mainly attributed to the increasing amount of the active species. Finally, The possible degradation channel of Acid Orange H was proposed through the analysis of the main intermediates detected by gas chromatograph coupled with mass spectrophotometer (GC-MS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. We concluded that the hydroxyl radicals could react with the azo linkage-bearing carbon of a hydroxy, which led to the cleavage of C-N and the discoloration of azo-dye.
