Abstract:Decadal variations of the transport and bifurcation latitude of the North Equatorial Current (NEC) in the northwestern tropical Pacific Ocean over 1959–2011 are investigated using outputs of the Ocean Analysis/Reanalysis System 3 prepared by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. The results indicate that the NEC transports at different longitudes have different decadal fluctuations, which are strongest around 139°E. The NEC bifurcation latitude (NBL) has its largest decadal variations around 150 m. Extremes of the decadal NEC transport and NBL before 1975 correspond to different circulation anomalies from those after 1975. The regression map against decadal NBL exhibits negative sea surface height (SSH) anomalies and a cyclonic gyre anomaly over the northwestern tropical Pacific Ocean, while that against the decadal NEC transport exhibits a dipole structure, with positive/negative SSH anomalies to the north/south of about 13°N. Furthermore, decadal variations of the NEC transport and NBL over the whole period have different correlations with Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability (TPDV). Generally, the decadal NEC transport shows higher correlations with PDO than with TPDV, while the NBL has higher correlations with TPDV than with PDO. The high correlation of decadal NEC transport with PDO mainly comes from that of its northern branch with PDO, while its southern branch shows higher correlation with TPDV.
The Influence of Tropical Pacific Forcing on the Arctic Oscillation

Abstract:The potential role of tropical Pacific forcing in driving the seasonal variability of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) is explored using both observational data and a simple general circulation model (SGCM). A lead–lag regression technique is first applied to the monthly averaged sea surface temperature (SST) and the AO index. The AO maximum is found to be related to a negative SST anomaly over the tropical Pacific three months earlier. A singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis is then performed on the tropical Pacific SST and the sea level pressure (SLP) over the Northern Hemisphere. An AO-like atmospheric pattern and its associated SST appear as the second pair of SVD modes. Ensemble integrations are carried out with the SGCM to test the atmospheric response to different tropical Pacific forcings. The atmospheric response to the linear fit of the model’s empirical forcing associated with the SST variability in the second SVD modes strongly projects onto the AO. Idealized thermal forcings are then designed based on the regression of the seasonally averaged tropical Pacific precipitation against the AO index. Results indicate that forcing anomalies over the western tropical Pacific are more effective in generating an AO-like response while those over the eastern tropical Pacific tend to produce a Pacific-North American (PNA)-like response. The physical mechanisms responsible for the energy transport from the tropical Pacific to the extratropical North Atlantic are investigated using wave activity flux and vorticity forcing formalisms. The energy from the western tropical Pacific forcing tends to propagate zonally to the North Atlantic because of the jet stream waveguide effect while the transport of the energy from the eastern tropical Pacific forcing mostly concentrates over the PNA area. The linearized SGCM results show that nonlinear processes are involved in the generation of the forced AO-like pattern.
Interannual Variations of the North Equatorial Current Across the Pacific Ocean

Abstract:Abstract The interannual variation of the North Equatorial Current (NEC) across the North Pacific Ocean and the modulation of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) are investigated based on both observations and reduced gravity model experiments. Results reveal that the interannual variation of the NEC is highly related to El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with unsynchronized variations both in zonal and meridional structure. The tropical and subtropical gyre branches of the NEC (NEC‐S and NEC‐N) behave antiphase variation during El Niño events with the transport of the former being enhanced and the latter being weakened across the Pacific. The NEC axis in the western/eastern Pacific shifts northward/southward during El Niño events, consistent with the meridional shift of the zero‐line of wind stress curl. Model experiments indicate that Rossby waves mainly modulate the NEC near the western boundary and the NEC‐N, while Ekman pumping modulates NEC‐S in the western basin. Meanwhile, the relationship between the interannual variation of the NEC and ENSO events is significantly modulated by different PDO phases. The PDO cold phase favors a much closer connection between the NEC and the Niño 3.4 index. The dynamics lie in that PDO‐related wind stress curl and sea level anomalies are consistent with that of El Niño, favoring the enhanced correlation between NEC and El Niño. The reverse is true for the warm phase. These results will contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of the tropical Pacific Ocean circulation and its role in climate change.

Abstract:We report the pleural fluid values of thyroid hormones and their carrier proteins in a patient who suffered from nephrotic syndrome with renal insufficiency and transient hypothyroidism. The pleural effusion was transudate. The concentrations of thyroxine-binding globulin (TBG), thyroxine-binding prealbumin (TBPA), and albumin (Alb) were approximately 30–50% of the plasma. The concentrations of total triiodothyronine (TT3), total tetraiodothyronine (TT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), and free tetraiodothyronine (FT4) were approximately 30–50% of the plasma. Hypothyroidism was associated with the degree of edema. After improving systemic edema, proteinuria remained unchanged but the patient did not require levothyroxine. We speculate that the large amount of transudation of thyroid hormones with their carrier proteins from the blood vessels to the third space (edema and pleural effusion), thereby reducing thyroid hormones in the plasma, was associated with hypothyroidism.

Abstract:Abstract The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the leading mode of Pacific decadal sea surface temperature variability, arises mainly from combinations of regional air-sea interaction within the North Pacific Ocean and remote forcing, such as from the tropical Pacific and the Atlantic. Because of such a combination of mechanisms, a question remains as to how much PDO variability originates from these regions. To better understand PDO variability, the equatorial Pacific and the Atlantic impacts on the PDO are examined using several 3-dimensional partial ocean data assimilation experiments conducted with two global climate models: the CESM1.0 and MIROC3.2m. In these partial assimilation experiments, the climate models are constrained by observed temperature and salinity anomalies, one solely in the Atlantic basin and the other solely in the equatorial Pacific basin, but are allowed to evolve freely in other regions. These experiments demonstrate that, in addition to the tropical Pacific’s role in driving PDO variability, the Atlantic can affect PDO variability by modulating the tropical Pacific climate through two proposed processes. One is the equatorial pathway, in which tropical Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) variability causes an El Niño-like SST response in the equatorial Pacific through the reorganization of the global Walker circulation. The other is the north tropical pathway, where low-frequency SST variability associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation induces a Matsuno-Gill type atmospheric response in the tropical Atlantic-Pacific sectors north of the equator. These results provide a quantitative assessment suggesting that 12–29% of PDO variance originates from the Atlantic Ocean and 40–44% from the tropical Pacific. The remaining 27–48% of the variance is inferred to arise from other processes such as regional ocean-atmosphere interactions in the North Pacific and possibly teleconnections from the Indian Ocean.

Abstract:The Inter-decadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) features a basin-scale horseshoe-like sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly pattern. Its cold-phase shift around 1999, implicated as a driver for the early-2000s global warming slowdown, has been potentially linked to the Atlantic warming during the positive-phase Atlantic Multi-decadal Variability (AMV). However, the key mechanism for the trans-basin Atlantic-Pacific teleconnection remains debatable. Here we show that an AMV-SST cooling can initiate a pan-Pacific response. The North Atlantic cooling induces westerly wind anomalies over the central-western equatorial Pacific as Kelvin-wave responses and easterly wind anomalies over the far-eastern equatorial Pacific as Rossby-wave responses. Additionally, anomalous lows are generated over the extratropical North and South Pacific through the mid-latitude Rossby wave propagation. The tropical and mid-latitude teleconnections act together to develop into a warm-phase IPO-like pattern through the wind-induced latent heat. Our results suggest a potential of advancing the predictability of IPO through a skillful simulation of AMV.

The Influences of the Multi‐Scale Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies in the North Pacific on the Jet Stream in Winter

Abstract:Using Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) data and numerical simulations, the impacts of the multi-scale sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the North Pacific on the boreal winter atmospheric circulations are investigated. The basin-scale SST anomaly as the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) pattern, a narrow meridional band of frontal-scale smoothed SST anomaly in the subtropical front zone (STFZ) and the spatial dispersed eddy-scale SST anomalies within the STFZ are the three types of forcings. The results of statistical methods find that all three oceanic forcings may correspond to the winter North Pacific jet changing with the similar pattern. Furthermore, several atmospheric general circulation model simulations are used to reveal the differences and detail processes of the three forcings. The basin-scale cold PDO-pattern SST anomaly first causes negative turbulent heat flux anomalies, atmospheric cooling, and wind deceleration in the lower atmosphere. Subsequently, the cooling temperature with an amplified southern lower temperature gradient and baroclinity brings a lagging middle warming because of the enhanced atmospheric eddy heat transport. The poleward and upward development of baroclinic fluctuations eventually causes the acceleration of the upper jet. The smoothed frontal- and eddy-scales SST anomalies in the STFZ cause comparable anomalous jet as the basin-scale by changing the upward baroclinic energy and Eliassen-Palm fluxes. The forcing effects of multi-scales SST anomalies coexist simultaneously in the mid-latitude North Pacific, which can cause similar anomalous upper atmospheric circulations. This is probably why it is tricky to define the certain oceanic forcing to the specific observed atmospheric circulation variation.

Abstract:Observed wintertime atmospheric anomalies over the central North Pacific associated with the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) are characterized by a cold/trough (warm/ridge) structure, that is, an anomalous equivalent barotropic low (high) over a negative (positive) sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly. While the midlatitude atmosphere has its own strong internal variabilities, to what degree local SST anomalies can affect the midlatitude atmospheric variability remains unclear. To identify such an impact, three atmospheric general circulation model experiments each having a 63-yr-long simulation are conducted. The control run forced by observed global SST reproduces well the observed PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) structure. However, the removal of the midlatitude North Pacific SST variabilities in the first sensitivity run reduces the atmospheric response by roughly one-third. In the second sensitivity run in which large-scale North Pacific SST variabilities are mostly kept, but their frontal-scale meridional gradients are sharply smoothed, simulated PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) anomalies are also reduced by nearly one-third. Dynamical diagnoses exhibit that such a reduction is primarily due to the weakened transient eddy activities that are induced by weakened meridional SST gradient anomalies, in which the transient eddy vorticity forcing plays a crucial role. Therefore, it is suggested that midlatitude North Pacific SST anomalies make a considerable (approximately one-third) contribution to the observed PDO-related cold/trough (warm/ridge) anomalies in which the frontal-scale meridional SST gradient (oceanic front) is a key player, although most of those atmospheric anomalies are determined by the SST variabilities outside of the midlatitude North Pacific.
Competing impacts of tropical Pacific and Atlantic on Southern Ocean inter-decadal variability

Abstract:The observed Southern Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) has experienced prominent inter-decadal variability nearly in phase with the Inter-decadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO), but less associated with the Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV), challenging the prevailing view of Pacific-Atlantic synergistic effects. Yet, the mechanisms of distinct trans-hemispheric connections to the Southern Ocean remain indecisive. Here, by individually constraining the observed cold-polarity and warm-polarity IPO and AMV SSTs in a climate model, we show that the IPO is influential in initiating a basin-wide Southern Ocean response, with the AMV secondary. A tropical Pacific-wide cooling triggers a basin-scale Southern Ocean cold episode through a strong Rossby wave response to the north-to-south cross-equatorial weakened Hadley circulation. By contrast, due to the competing role of tropical Pacific cooling, an Atlantic warming partly cools the Southern Ocean via a weak Rossby wave response to the south-to-north cross-equatorial enhanced Hadley circulation. Conversely, tropical Pacific warming leads to a warm Southern Ocean episode. Our findings highlight that properly accounting for the tropical Pacific SST variability may provide a potential for skillful prediction of Southern Ocean climate change and more reliable estimates of climate sensitivity, currently overestimated by the misrepresented Southern Ocean warming.

Abstract:Abstract The interdecadal Pacific oscillation (IPO) and Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO), two leading modes of decadal climate variability, are not independent. It was proposed that ENSO-like sea surface temperature (SST) variations play a central role in the Pacific responses to the AMO forcing. However, observational analyses indicate that the AMO-related SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific are far weaker than those in the extratropical North Pacific. Here, we show that SST in the North Pacific is tied to the AMO forcing by convective heating associated with precipitation over the tropical Pacific, instead of by SST there, based on an ensemble of pacemaker experiments with North Atlantic SST restored to the observation in a coupled general circulation model. The AMO modulates precipitation over the equatorial and tropical southwestern Pacific through exciting an anomalous zonal circulation and an interhemispheric asymmetry of net moist static energy input into the atmosphere. The convective heating associated with the precipitation anomalies drives SST variations in the North Pacific through a teleconnection, but it remarkably weakens the ENSO-like SST anomalies through a thermocline damping effect. This study has implications that the IPO is a combined mode generated by both AMO forcing and local air–sea interactions, but the IPO-related global warming acceleration/slowdown is independent of the AMO.

Abstract:Abstract The tropical Pacific warming pattern since the 1950s exhibits two warming centers in the western Pacific (WP) and eastern Pacific (EP), encompassing an equatorial central Pacific (CP) cooling and a hemispheric asymmetry in the subtropical EP. The underlying mechanisms of this warming pattern remain debated. Here, we conduct ocean heat decompositions of two coupled model large ensembles to unfold the role of wind-driven ocean circulation. When wind changes are suppressed, historical radiative forcing induces a subtropical northeastern Pacific warming, thus causing a hemispheric asymmetry that extends toward the tropical WP. The tropical EP warming is instead induced by the cross-equatorial winds associated with the hemispheric asymmetry, and its driving mechanism is southward warm Ekman advection due to the off-equatorial westerly wind anomalies around 5°N, not vertical thermocline adjustment. Climate models fail to capture the observed CP cooling, suggesting an urgent need to better simulate equatorial oceanic processes and thermal structures.

Abstract:We analyzed the temporal and spatial variation, and interannual variability of the North Pacific meridional overturning circulation using an empirical orthogonal function method, and calculated mass transport using Simple Ocean Data Assimilation Data from 1958–2008. The meridional streamfunction field in the North Pacific tilts N-S; the Tropical Cell (TC), Subtropical Cell (STC), and Deep Tropical Cell (DTC) may be in phase on an annual time scale; the TC and the STC are out of phase on an interannual time scale, but the interannual variability of the DTC is complex. The TC and STC interannual variability is associated with ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation). The TC northward, southward, upward, and downward transports all weaken in El Niños and strengthen in La Niñas. The STC northward and southward transports are out of phase, while the STC northward and downward transports are in phase. Sea-surface water that reaches the middle latitude and is subducted may not completely return to the tropics. The zonal wind anomalies over the central North Pacific, which control Ekman transport, and the east-west slope of the sea level may be major factors causing the TC northward and southward transport interannual variability and the STC northward and southward transports on the interannual time scale. The DTC northward and southward transports decrease during strong El Niños and increase during strong La Niñas. DTC upward and downward transports are not strongly correlated with the Niño-3 index and may not be completely controlled by ENSO.
Understanding the Inter-Model Spread of PDO's Impact on Tropical Cyclone Frequency over the Western North Pacific in CMIP6 Models

Abstract:This work investigates the inter-model diversity of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation's (PDO) impact on tropical cyclone frequency (TCF) over the Western North Pacific (WNP) from the historical simulation of twenty-two Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) models. The impact of the PDO is expressed as the TCF difference between the positive and negative PDO phases. The comparison between the models with high PDO skill and low PDO skill shows that the PDO-related sea surface temperature (SST) gradient between the western and central tropical Pacific plays an important role in changing the large-scale atmospheric dynamic fields for TC genesis and, thus, the TCF over the WNP. This SST gradient also significantly contributes to the inter-model spread of PDO's impact on TCF across the 22 CMIP6 models. We, therefore, stress that the PDO-related eastward SST gradient between the western and central tropical Pacific triggers the lower troposphere westerly and eastward extending of the monsoon trough over the WNP. The moistening of the atmosphere and enhancing ascending motion in the mid-troposphere promote convection, leading to the easterly wind anomaly over the upper troposphere, which reduces the vertical wind shear. Those favorable dynamic conditions consistently promote the TC formation over the southeastern part of the Western North Pacific. Our results highlight that PDO could impact the WNP TCF through its associated tropical SST gradient.
The Asymmetric Atmospheric Response to the Midlatitude North Pacific SST Anomalies

Abstract:Forced by Pacific Decadal Oscillation‐related sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies with the same pattern but opposite signs in the western‐central North Pacific, nonlinear wintertime atmospheric responses are produced by a state‐of‐the‐art atmospheric general circulation model (GFDL AM2.1); that is, an obvious equivalent barotropic geopotential low appears over the cold SST forcing (“CSST”), whereas a weak baroclinic structure shows up corresponding to the warm SST forcing (“WSST”), and both of them have similar characteristics in the lower troposphere. Specifically, because of the relatively dry environment in the central North Pacific, nonlinear responses of moisture process including latent heat flux and low‐level atmosphere moisture advection induce asymmetric diabatic heating (Qd): in WSST, Qd tends to increase in the middle‐lower troposphere but decrease in the middle‐upper level, whereas it always increases in the whole troposphere in CSST. Thus, Qd has the same low‐level positive vertical gradient in both CSST and WSST, which produces similar atmospheric circulation anomalies in the lower troposphere. In turn, the asymmetric responses of low‐level temperature advection further modify air temperature meridional gradient as well as atmospheric baroclinicity in the lower troposphere, significantly shifting the transient eddy activities southward in CSST and greatly weakening their intensity in WSST, respectively. Accordingly, the transient eddy vorticity forcing primarily determines the upper‐level atmospheric responses in CSST, but it has unsystematic effects in WSST that are overtaken by Qd. Therefore, the dominance of diabatic heating in WSST and transient eddy forcing in CSST over the central North Pacific lead to the asymmetric atmospheric responses among which the asymmetry of moisture plays an essential role.
Shifted Relationship Between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclogenesis Since the 1990S

Abstract:The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) are prominent climate modes in the North Pacific with well-established impacts on tropical cyclone (TC) genesis in the western North Pacific (WNP) basin. While previous research has primarily focused on the roles of the PDO and PMM in regulating TC genesis through the modification of large-scale environmental factors, this study investigates the evolving influence of the PDO on WNP TC genesis since the 1950s. Remarkably, our analysis reveals a shift in the PDO-TC genesis relationship, transitioning from a significant negative correlation to a significant positive correlation since the 1990s. This shift is attributed to variations in the specific large-scale factors through which the PDO affects TC genesis. Furthermore, this study suggests that these changes appear to be linked to the PMM strengthening on the interdecadal timescale in recent decades. The linkage of the PMM strengthening to the PDO-related atmospheric circulation is further confirmed by the results of a 500 year pre-industrial numerical experiment, suggesting that the PMM strengthening may result from natural internal variability. The results underscore the non-stationary relationship between PDO and WNP TC genesis, with the PMM intensity probably influencing their relationship.

Abstract:Abstract The variability of the shortwave radiative fluxes at the surface and top of atmosphere (TOA) is examined in a pre‐industrial modeling setup using the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) as a possible pacemaker of atmospheric decadal‐scale variability. Within models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project—Phase 6, downwelling shortwave radiation at the surface, the net shortwave fluxes at the surface and TOA, as well as cloud radiative effects show remarkably similar patterns associated with the PDO. Through ensemble simulations designed with a pure PDO pattern in the North Pacific only, we show that the PDO relates to about 20%–40% of the unforced year‐to‐year variability of these shortwave fluxes over the Northern Hemispheric continents. The sea surface temperature imprint on shortwave‐flux variability over land is larger for spatially aggregated time series as compared to smaller areas, due to the blurring effect of small‐scale atmospheric noise. The surface and TOA radiative flux anomalies associated with the PDO index range of [−1.64; 1.64] are estimated to reach up to ±6 Wm −2 for North America, ∓3 Wm −2 for India and ±2 Wm −2 for Europe. We hypothesize that the redistribution of clouds in response to a North Pacific PDO anomaly can impact the South Pacific and North Atlantic SSTs.

Abstract:The Pacific decadal and interdecadal oscillation (PDO) has been extensively explored in recent decades because of its profound impact on global climate systems. It is a long-lived ENSO-like pattern of Pacific climate variability with a period of 10–30 years. The general picture is that the anomalously warm (cool) SSTs in the central North Pacific are always accompanied by the anomalously cool (warm) SSTs along the west coast of America and in the central east tropical Pacific with comparable amplitude. In general, there are two classes of opinions on the origin of this low-frequency climate variability, one thinking that it results from deterministically coupled modes of the Pacific ocean-atmosphere system, and the other, from stochastic atmospheric forcing. The deterministic origin emphasizes that the internal physical processes in an air-sea system can provide a positive feedback mechanism to amplify an initial perturbation, and a negative feedback mechanism to reverse the phase of oscillation. The dynamic evolution of ocean circulation determines the timescale of the oscillation. The stochastic origin, however, emphasizes that because the atmospheric activities can be thought as having no preferred timescale and are associated with an essentially white noise spectrum, the ocean response can manifest a red peak in a certain low frequency range with a decadal to interdecadal timescale. In this paper, the authors try to systematically understand the state of the art of observational, theoretical and numerical studies on the PDO and hope to provide a useful background reference for current research.
Decadal Changes in Multiscale Water Vapor Transport and Atmospheric River Associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation

Abstract:This study investigates the features of atmospheric circulation and moisture transport associated with two modes of decadal variability in the North Pacific: the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) and the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO), with emphasis on the multiscale water vapor transport and atmospheric river (AR) over the North Pacific region. During the positive phase of PDO, the geopotential height anomaly at 500-hPa exhibits a Pacific-North American-like pattern. During the positive phase of NPGO, the geopotential height anomaly at 500 hPa features a dipole pattern with a negative anomaly north of 40 degrees N and a positive anomaly south of 40 degrees N over the North Pacific. Associated with the positive PDO phase, the ocean-to-land moisture transport is enhanced between 25 degrees and 35 degrees N and reduced over the northeastern Pacific (25 degrees-62 degrees N, 180 degrees-110 degrees W) for the time-mean integrated vapor transport (IVT). The synoptic poleward transport is suppressed north of 40 degrees N and enhanced south of 40 degrees N. In the positive NPGO phase, the zonal moisture transport is intensified south of 20 degrees N and between 40 degrees and 50 degrees N for the time-mean IVT and weakened over the west coast of North America for the low-frequency (10-100 days) IVT. The synoptic poleward transport is suppressed south of 30 degrees N. The eastern part of the North Pacific AR belt moves southward during positive PDO as the entire North Pacific AR belt shifts slightly northward during positive NPGO. An investigation of AR anomalies during a period over which the PDO and NPGO coexist demonstrates that the AR frequency over the North American western coastal regions is significantly influenced by the conjunction of the PDO and NPGO modes.
Structure and Dynamics of Decadal Anomalies in the Wintertime Midlatitude North Pacific Ocean–atmosphere System

Abstract:The structure and dynamics of decadal anomalies in the wintertime midlatitude North Pacific ocean–atmosphere system are examined in this study, using the NCEP/NCAR atmospheric reanalysis, HadISST SST and Simple Ocean Data Assimilation data for 1960–2010. The midlatitude decadal anomalies associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation are identified, being characterized by an equivalent barotropic atmospheric low (high) pressure over a cold (warm) oceanic surface. Such a unique configuration of decadal anomalies can be maintained by an unstable ocean–atmosphere interaction mechanism in the midlatitudes, which is hypothesized as follows. Associated with a warm PDO phase, an initial midlatitude surface westerly anomaly accompanied with intensified Aleutian low tends to force a negative SST anomaly by increasing upward surface heat fluxes and driving southward Ekman current anomaly. The SST cooling tends to increase the meridional SST gradient, thus enhancing the subtropical oceanic front. As an adjustment of the atmospheric boundary layer to the enhanced oceanic front, the low-level atmospheric meridional temperature gradient and thus the low-level atmospheric baroclinicity tend to be strengthened, inducing more active transient eddy activities that increase transient eddy vorticity forcing. The vorticity forcing that dominates the total atmospheric forcing tends to produce an equivalent barotropic atmospheric low pressure north of the initial westerly anomaly, intensifying the initial anomalies of the midlatitude surface westerly and Aleutian low. Therefore, it is suggested that the midlatitude ocean–atmosphere interaction can provide a positive feedback mechanism for the development of initial anomaly, in which the oceanic front and the atmospheric transient eddy are the indispensable ingredients. Such a positive ocean–atmosphere feedback mechanism is fundamentally responsible for the observed decadal anomalies in the midlatitude North Pacific ocean–atmosphere system.
Impact of the North Atlantic Oscillation on the subtropical and subpolar gyres

Abstract:The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is a leading mode of atmospheric variability, affecting the North Atlantic Ocean on sub-seasonal to multi-decadal timescales. The NAO changes the atmospheric forcing at the ocean's surface, including winds and surface buoyancy fluxes, both of which are known to impact large-scale gyre circulation. However, the relative role of other physical processes (such as mesoscale eddies and topography) in influencing gyre circulation under NAO variability is not fully understood. Here, we analyze a series of ocean--sea ice simulations using a barotropic vorticity budget to understand long-term response of the North Atlantic gyre circulation to NAO forcing. We find that for each standard deviation increase in the NAO index, the subtropical and subpolar gyres intensify by 0.90 Sv and 3.41 Sv (1 Sv = 10$^6$ m$^3$ s$^{-1}$) respectively. The NAO-induced wind stress anomalies drive approximately 90% of the change in the subtropical gyre's interior flow. However, in the subpolar gyre's interior, in addition to wind stress, flow-topography interactions, stratification (influenced by surface heat fluxes), and non-linear advection significantly influence the circulation. Along the western boundary the bottom pressure torque plays a key role in steering the flow, and the vorticity input by the bottom pressure torque is partly redistributed by non-linear advection. Our study highlights the importance of both atmospheric forcing and oceanic dynamical processes in driving long-term gyre circulation responses to the NAO.
