Abstract:Perfectionists have excessively high standards and thus are prone to experience dissatisfaction and embarrassment. But what if they achieve perfection? The present study investigated in a sample of 194 university students how self-oriented and socially prescribed perfectionism predicted emotional reactions (satisfaction, dissatisfaction, pride, embarrassment) to imagined situations in which students achieved either perfect or flawed outcomes. Self-oriented perfectionism showed positive correlations with satisfaction and pride after perfect outcomes, and positive correlations with dissatisfaction and embarrassment after flawed outcomes. In contrast, socially prescribed perfectionism showed positive correlations with dissatisfaction after both perfect and flawed outcomes. Moreover, socially prescribed perfectionism moderated the relationship of self-oriented perfectionism with satisfaction and pride after perfect outcomes: self-oriented perfectionism predicted higher satisfaction and pride only in students with low levels of socially prescribed perfectionism. The findings show that perfectionists high in self-oriented perfectionism, but low in socially prescribed perfectionism may experience more pride and greater satisfaction than nonperfectionists, but only when they achieve perfection.
Optimism, coping, and health: Assessment and implications of generalized outcome expectancies.

Abstract:This article describes a scale measuring dispositional optimism, defined in terms of generalized outcome expectancies. Two preliminary studies assessed the scale's psychometric properties and its relationships with several other instruments. The scale was then used in a longitudinal study of symptom reporting among a group of undergraduates. Specifically, respondents were asked to complete three questionnaires 4 weeks before the end of a semester. Included in the questionnaire battery was the measure of optimism, a measure of private self-consciousness, and a 39-item physical symptom checklist. Subjects completed the same set of questionnaires again on the last day of class. Consistent with predictions, subjects who initially reported being highly optimistic were subsequently less likely to report being bothered by symptoms (even after correcting for initial symptom-report levels) than were subjects who initially reported being less optimistic. This effect tended to be stronger among persons high in private self-consciousness than among those lower in private self-consciousness. Discussion centers on other health related applications of the optimism scale, and the relationships between our theoretical orientation and several related theories.

Abstract:Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, Ahead of Print. It is widely believed that unfinished tasks are better remembered than finished tasks, a phenomenon labelled the "Zeigarnik-Effect." It has been argued that this advantage relies on the persisting tension inherent in uncompleted intentions. However, this interpretation has been challenged. First, the memory advantage could not be reliably replicated. Second, a memory advantage can still be observed when the unfinished status of an uncompleted intention is inherently terminated, rendering the "persisting tension" explanation unlikely. The goal of this study was to investigate the potential memory advantage of interrupted but finished tasks and its relation to the personality disposition achievement motivation, specifically, hope of success and fear of failure. This goal was motivated by the hypothesis that the experience of a discrepancy between the anticipation of success and the subsequent failure would relate to the memory for an unfinished task, and that this discrepancy experience would be stronger for people high in hope of success. A large sample of adults (>1,000 participants) was presented with 12 anagrams. If they did not solve an anagram within 60 s, they were shown the solution. Afterwards, we measured free recall of the anagram solutions and assessed achievement motivation. Overall, participants recalled more unsolved anagrams than solved anagrams. However, only individuals high in hope of success displayed a greater tendency to remember unsolved anagrams. This study supports the idea that a discrepancy experience rather than persisting tension coincides with memory for unsolved tasks.

Abstract:Reduced motivation to expend cognitive effort is a clinically relevant but understudied feature of depression. Preliminary research indicates that depressed and dysphoric individuals may be less willing to expend cognitive effort for reward than non-depressed individuals. However, the extent to which this is due to reduced expectations of reward, and whether willingness to expend effort can be increased by altering affective expectations of reward, are unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of dysphoria, anhedonia, and affective expectations on cognitive effort expenditure for reward.

Neuropsychological Impairments in Unipolar Depression: the Influence of Perceived Failure on Subsequent Performance

Abstract:The CANTAB battery of neuropsychological tests was used to compare the performance of 28 patients with unipolar depression with that of 22 age and IQ matched controls. The patients were impaired on almost all tests studied with deficits in pattern and spatial recognition memory, matching to sample, spatial span, spatial working memory and planning. Most of the patients showed at least some impairment and deficits were seen across cognitive domains. An important finding was the detrimental effect of failure on subsequent performance; having solved one problem incorrectly, patients were far more likely than controls to fail the subsequent problem. Superimposed on the general deficits, there were also specific deficits in executive tasks characteristic of frontostriatal dysfunction and deficits in mnemonic tasks characteristic of temporal lobe dysfunction. This combination of a specific form of motivational deficit, resulting in oversensitivity to negative feedback, and superimposed specific neuropsychological deficits were correlated with severity of depression. The most significant correlations were seen between mnemonic deficits and clinical rating scores. Comparisons of the deficits seen in the depressed patients in this study with other patient groups assessed with the CANTAB neuropsychological battery, showed that one of the hypotheses of the neuropsychological deficits in depression, that of "frontosubcortical' or "frontostriatal' dysfunction, was not supported. These findings are discussed in relation to the likely neural substrates of depression.
Depression and the search for negative evaluations: More evidence of the role of self-verification strivings.

Abstract:Swann, Wenzlaff, Krull, and Pelham (1992) suggested that depressed and dysphoric persons verify their self-conceptions by seeking rather negative appraisals. Hooley and Richters (1992) and Alloy and Lipman (1992) have worried that (a) idiosyncratic features of Swann et al.'s participants and design may have produced their effects and (b) Swann et al. presented no evidence that self-verification strivings are motivated. We address these issues empirically. Study 1 showed that 20 dysphoric participants preferred interacting with a person who appraised them unfavorably over participating in another study, in comparison with 30 nondysphorics. Study 2 revealed that 26 dysphoric persons responded to feedback that challenged their negative self-view by working to reaffirm their low self-esteem, in comparison with 47 nondysphorics. These findings support the notion that at some level depressed and dysphoric persons want rather negative appraisals.

Finally, the research will be assessed in terms of its relevance and value, highlighting the implications for future research when happiness is connected with a win or loss. A conclusion will clarify the main strengths and areas of improvement. Summary of Research Methods The investigation focuses on salience and satisfaction as main factors that influence how happy an individual feels given a win or loss situation. Kassam et al. [1] hypothesised that only a salient comparison would be made if a person won, relative to the outcome of the situation. In a losing situation, a salient comparison would still be made, but given the negativity of the situation, the individual would then search for an absolute comparison that resulted in satisfactory feelings of happiness. They predicted that these feelings of sensitivity for losers and insensitivity for winners would be reflected by participant's reports of happiness, disappointment and regret (Positive-Affect Index) across two different experiments. In Experiment 1, participants were recruited in the street and asked to choose an option on a scratch card where two different value cash prizes could be won ($1 or $3, $3 or $5, $5 or $7). After discovering both amounts on the card, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire regarding how happy, disappointed and regretful they felt (1 being 'not at all' and 9 being 'extremely'). Experiment 2 on the other hand was conducted on a computer in a laboratory setting and participants were given $5 for their involvement. During the task, participants had to select one of two options on the computer screen for each trial, using the same cash amount options from Experiment 1. Four critical trials were rigged so that each participant had a trial of high/low cognitive load for a high/low cash prize. Abstract:In this article, the authors advance arguments for empirically assessing expectations in terms of their importance in organizational diagnosis and the implementation of a change program. This study explores the feasibility of including in an organizational diagnostic survey a scale to measure employee expectations of the changeability of selected facets of organizational functioning. Exactly 437 employees from all levels of a mental health hospital completed a diagnostic survey. Each of the items on the survey included four parts pertaining to (a) a facet of organizational climate, (b) expectations of facet changeability, (c) facet importance, and (d) employee satisfaction with the facet indicated. Correlational analyses of responses to the four parts indicated that expectations of changeability could be measured independently of the remaining three parts. Moderated regression analyses clarify their nature and potential use.

Abstract:Disruption of normal emotional experience is central to the phenomenology of depression. Twenty-three depressed outpatients and 23 control subjects performed a computerized decision-making task, during which affective ratings were assessed online to identify various dimensions of emotional experience. We sought to contrast regret (the comparison of the outcomes of selected and nonselected options) with the general negative appraisal of task events. The experience of regret was reduced in depressed patients, an effect that was particularly related to self-reported apathy scores. In an exploratory analysis, we observed that females had a general downward shift in their ratings, as compared with males, but disappointment and regret effects were of similar magnitude. The possible contribution of the orbitofrontal cortex to the phenomenology of regret is discussed. Abstract:People often expect a future brighter than the present. However, expectations of steep improvement have been linked to worse psychological functioning, perhaps because rosy predictions often do not come to pass. Should we conclude that expecting a highly satisfying future is maladaptive? We wondered instead whether the adaptiveness of these trajectories may depend on other belief systems which accompany them. Across three studies we found that although individuals high and low in depressive symptoms both expected a better future, they differed in their beliefs about whether satisfaction comes from primarily controllable or uncontrollable sources. People lower in depressive symptoms believed that satisfaction is impacted by controllable behaviors which predicted motivation to engage in well-being supportive behaviors. In contrast, those higher in depressive symptoms believed satisfaction came from uncontrollable factors, accounting for less inclination to engage in well-being facilitating behaviors. These insights may help clarify how people's expectations for a better tomorrow may only sometimes be accompanied by adaptive beliefs about how to get there.

Abstract:INTRODCTION: Previous studies have argued that people tend to isolate themselves from negative information. This tendency is modulated by the individual's role in social interaction, that is, as an initiative actor (e.g., "I hit Tom") or a passive recipient (e.g., "Paul hits me"). Depressed patients tend to focus on negative aspects of themselves and cope with situations passively. It is still an open question how the actor/recipient role affects the behavioral and neural responses to self in depression.METHODS: The present study adopted functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology to investigate behavioral and neural responses to self (as an actor/recipient) in depressed patients and the matched healthy controls when attributing negative events.RESULTS: Compared with healthy controls, depressed patients showed more self-attribution for negative events. Depressed patients showed increased brain activity in the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) subsystem of the default mode network (DMN) when they played recipient role in self-related negative events. Activity of the dmPFC subsystem was negatively correlated with depressed patients' self-attribution for negative events in recipient condition. While decreased brain activity in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) subsystem was observed in depressed patients when they played the actor or recipient role in self-related negative events. Activity of the MTL subsystem was negatively correlated with depressed patients' reaction time when they played recipient role in selfrelated negative events.CONCLUSION: These results implicated that depressed patients manifested the negative self-view. Actor/recipient role affected their activation patterns in the DMN which were different from the healthy controls. The correlation between the abnormal brain activations of the DMN and the behavioral performances might manifest more easily when depressed patients played recipient role in negative events.

Abstract:Musicae Scientiae, Ahead of Print. Being a career musician is typified by high risk. Despite low earnings, many musicians pursue their careers driven by self-belief, high expectations, and optimism. However, failure to obtain the success many optimistically aspire to has been seen to pose psychosocial risks relating to mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression. While studies have shown dispositional optimism as having many health-related benefits, it has also been conceptualized negatively in encouraging a tendency toward loss-making in one key area: gambling. In this article, we develop the argument that the risks of professional music-making are analogous to gambling, and the optimism displayed by many aspiring career musicians may therefore represent a form of what Berlant calls cruel optimism, with negative effects on mental health and wellbeing. In doing so, we draw on Berlant's theoretical position to examine the potentially harmful intersections between risk-taking behaviors and creative desire. Drawing also on our clinical experience, we consider when and how musicians who are emotionally struggling with their work might find it advantageous to reorient their careers, or even withdraw from the labor market altogether, to support their health and wellbeing, and the challenges around the loss of identity these can present.

Abstract:Do clinically depressed individuals seek favorable or unfavorable information about the self? Self-verification theory makes the counterintuitive prediction that depressed individuals solicit feedback that confirms their negative self-views. To test this prediction, participants were classified on the basis of a structured clinical interview and self-report measures into high-esteem, low self-esteem, and depressed groups. All participants were offered a choice between receiving favorable or unfavorable feedback; 82% of the depressed participants chose the unfavorable feedback, compared to 64% of the low self-esteem participants and 25% of the high self-esteem participants. Additional evidence indicated that depressed individuals also failed to exploit fully an opportunity to acquire favorable evaluations that were self-verifying. The authors discuss how seeking negative evaluations and failing to seek favorable evaluations may help maintain depression.

Abstract:Abstract Background and Hypothesis: The Cognitive Model of Negative Symptoms is a prominent model that posits that defeatist performance beliefs (DPB) are a key psychological mechanism underlying negative symptoms in those with schizophrenia (SZ). However, the ecological validity of the model has not been established, and temporally specific evaluations of the model’s hypotheses have not been conducted. This study tested the model’s key hypotheses in real-world environments using ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Study Design: Fifty-two outpatients with SZ and 55 healthy controls (CN) completed 6 days of EMA. Multilevel models examined concurrent and time-lagged associations between DPB and negative symptoms in daily life. Study Results: SZ displayed greater DPB in daily life than CN. Furthermore, greater DPB were associated with greater concurrently assessed negative symptoms (anhedonia, avolition, and asociality) in daily life. Time-lagged analyses indicated that in both groups, greater DPB at time t led to elevations in negative symptoms (anhedonia, avolition, or asociality) at t + 1 above and beyond the effects of negative symptoms at time t. Conclusions: Results support the ecological validity of the Cognitive Model of Negative Symptoms and identify a temporally specific association between DPB and subsequent negative symptoms that is consistent with the model’s hypotheses and a putative mechanistic pathway in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for negative symptoms. Findings suggest that DPB are a psychological factor contributing to negative symptoms in real-world environments. Implications for measuring DPB in daily life and providing just-in-time mobile health-based interventions to target this mechanism are discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes that self-deprecating presentations displaying a lack of ability and low performance are intended to obtain others’ positive evaluations. Although previous research has suggested that people fearing negative evaluations actively engage in self-deprecating presentations, the reasons for this have not been clarified. The considerations in this study were as follows. It was assumed that others’ positive evaluations carry the risk of over expectation, which could lead to the fear of negative evaluations for not meeting these expectations. Therefore, people make self-deprecating presentations to avoid eventual negative evaluations.

Abstract:Affective problems such as social anxiety and depression theoretically involve negative cognitive biases that trigger and maintain symptoms during everyday experiences. This study employed a social judgment paradigm to investigate possible biases in expectation of social acceptance, and subjective feelings of pain and reward. Healthy adult participants ( N = 120) were told their image had been judged by others. In 120 trials, they were shown photos of the judges and asked to anticipate whether they were liked by them or not, before being shown the judgment. Participants rated their level of pain and reward in each trial. Results indicated that social acceptance was expected less often by participants with higher levels of social anxiety. Self-reported pain was greatest after unexpected rejection. A greater likelihood of the presence of pain and higher self-reported pain were associated with higher levels of social anxiety and depression respectively. Self-reported reward was greatest after expected acceptance, and was not associated with social anxiety or depression. This study provides subjective experience information that has been missing from existing social judgment research. Moreover, these findings suggest that in social situations, those with social anxiety and depression more often expect rejection and experience rejection as more painful, respectively. These biases are potential maintaining factors and may be targets for further research and future intervention development.

Changing Azole Resistance: A Secondary Analysis of the MUTT I Randomized Clinical Trial.

Abstract:IMPORTANCE The development of multiple triazole resistance in pathogenic filamentous fungi has become an increasing clinical concern and has been shown to increase the risk for treatment failure. OBJECTIVE To determine whether antifungal resistance increased during the Mycotic Ulcer Treatment Trial I (MUTT I), as measured by minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) in baseline cultures. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This secondary analysis of a double-masked, multicenter, randomized clinical trial included patients with culture- or smear-positive filamentous fungal corneal ulcer and a baseline visual acuity of 20/40 to 20/400. Culture-positive samples with susceptibility testing were included in this analysis. The patients were treated at multiple locations of the Aravind Eye Care Hospital system in South India. Data were collected from April 3, 2010, to December 31, 2011, and analyzed from July 15 to September 1, 2015. INTERVENTIONS Corneal smears and cultures were obtained from all study participants at baseline. Susceptibility testing was performed for each culture-positive specimen. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES Minimum inhibitory concentration of voriconazole and natamycin in baseline cultures. RESULTS Of 323 participants with smear-positive specimens (183 men [56.7%]; 140 women [43.3%]; median [interquartile range] age, 47 [38-56] years), fungal-positive cultures were obtained for 256 (79.3%). The MIC data were available for 221 of 323 participants (68.4%), because 35 samples had no growth during susceptibility testing. A 2.14-fold increase per year (95% CI, 1.13-4.56; P = .02) in voriconazole MICs after controlling for the infectious organism was found. This association was not found when looking at natamycin MICs of baseline cultures after controlling for the infectious organism (1.26; 95% CI, 0.13-12.55; P = .85). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE Susceptibility to voriconazole appeared to decrease during the relatively short enrollment period of the clinical trial. This decrease may be more related to increased resistance of environmental fungi rather than previous treatment with azoles, because presenting with azole treatment was not a risk factor for resistance. Abstract:ObjectiveTo explore the personality character of depression patients with their sickness. Methods76 patients with depression disorder were tested by SDS, EPQ, WCRS,and ASQ. The control group including 84 person, was selected from the normal people matched by age and sex. Results①Compared with the control group, the depression group patients have higher scores in the neurotic and psychotic scales of EPQ; ②Compared with the control group, the depression group patients have lower stress in the “catharsis and admit” and “retreat” factors of WCRS; ③The depression group patients have higher scoress in the“oneself”,“permamence”, and “macrocosm” of negative events of ASQ; ④There are some correlations between the personality character and the coping style of the depression disorder patient. Conclusion The personality character of depression patients can behave as obvious neurotic, loneliness, and communication disorder. Such a unhealthy personality character and coping style, attribution style pay an important role in their sickness occured.
Depressive symptoms and the processing of unexpected social feedback: Differences in surprise levels, feedback acceptance, and "immunizing" cognition

Abstract:Negative social expectations are a key symptom of depression. It has been suggested that individuals with depressive symptoms tend to maintain these expectations by devaluing new experiences that do not fit prior expectations. However, our understanding of the role of such "immunizing" cognition in response to unexpected social feedback in depression, as well as the cognitive mechanisms involved, remains limited. This study investigated the association between depressive symptoms and the cognitive processing of unexpected positive or negative social feedback using a novel, video-based approach featuring naturalistic social stimuli in a subclinical online sample (N = 155). We also examined how surprise levels, feedback acceptance and immunizing cognition relate to other cognitive processes, such as attributional style and rumination, using cross-sectional network analyses. Robust multiple linear regression analyses revealed that depressive symptoms were associated with higher surprise levels (R2adj. = .27), lower feedback acceptance (R2adj. = .19), and higher levels of immunizing cognition (R2adj. = .09) in response to unexpected positive social feedback, but only partially to unexpected negative social feedback. The network analysis suggested that self-efficacy expectations for coping with negative feelings and acceptance of positive social feedback had the strongest expected influence on the different cognitive processes. Our study highlights the challenges that individuals with depressive symptoms face in utilizing positive social feedback to modify negative expectations. For clinicians, our findings suggest the importance of promoting acceptance of positive social feedback, while simultaneously inhibiting immunizing cognition and avoiding the use of overly positive feedback.
