Abstract:The popularity of New Year's resolutions suggests that people are more likely to tackle their goals immediately following salient temporal landmarks. If true, this little-researched phenomenon has the potential to help people overcome important willpower problems that often limit goal attainment. Across three archival field studies, we provide evidence of a “fresh start effect.” We show that Google searches for the term “diet” (Study 1), gym visits (Study 2), and commitments to pursue goals (Study 3) all increase following temporal landmarks (e.g., the outset of a new week, month, year, or semester; a birthday; a holiday). We propose that these landmarks demarcate the passage of time, creating many new mental accounting periods each year, which relegate past imperfections to a previous period, induce people to take a big-picture view of their lives, and thus motivate aspirational behaviors. Abstract:From a childhood spent playing hundreds of softball games across the fields of central Massachusetts, I have many happy memories of being part of a cohesive team. We experienced wins and losses, exceptional and not-so-exceptional coaches, parents who cheered for us and parents who screamed unrestrainedly at the umpires. But the priority was always the success of the team, to which we brought our individual talents. Whether it was throwing strikes, hitting home runs, or rabidly arguing the call at home plate, everyone did their part. Nobody was happy as a bystander on the sidelines. Those childhood lessons continue to infuse my work today on multidisciplinary teams as an Infectious Diseases (ID) consultant; the team functions best when our skills are sharp, and we are fiercely invested in the game and each other.

Abstract:In the last few decades, reading the literature, we realized that we Astronomers have a strong preference to undertake very ambitious projects, and search for answers to the most fundamental questions in the history of the entire Universe. After running multiple times into such cardinal quest, the curiosity became no more sustainable and we had to find out. To our greater surprise, in the last few decades we had been restlessly participating to this superhuman endevour. Therefore we hereby explore the roots and grounds of this fundamental search, through the past decades, centuries and millennia.

Abstract:Abstract This article introduces the fresh start mindset, defined as a belief that people can make a new start, get a new beginning, and chart a new course in life, regardless of their past or present circumstances. With historical roots in American culture and neoliberalism, and with contemporary links to liquid modernity and global consumer culture, this mindset structures reasoning, experience, and everyday language, and guides behavior across self- and other-transformative consumption domains. We develop a six-item scale (FSM) to measure the fresh start mindset and situate it within a broader nomological network, including growth mindset, personal capacity for change, optimism, future temporal focus, internal locus of control, self-efficacy, perseverance, resilience, and consumer variety seeking. Individuals with a stronger (vs. weaker) fresh start mindset invest in transformative change through changing their circumstances, including their own consumption choices (e.g., buying a new pair of sunglasses and getting a new self); they also are more supportive of transformative programs that assist those who are challenged to get a fresh start (i.e., disadvantaged youth, at-risk teens, veterans, and tax-burdened adults). Our work significantly contributes to transformative consumer research with attention to self-activities and programs for vulnerable populations that enable new beginnings.

Abstract:We survey some of the philosophical challenges and pitfalls within origins research. Several of these challenges exhibit circularities, paradoxes, or anthropic biases. We present origins approaches in terms of three broad categories: unlikely (life's origin was a chance event), construction (life's origin was a stepwise series of synthesis and assembly processes), and emergence (life was always an amalgam of many parallel processes from which the living state emerged as a natural outcome of physical driving forces). We critically examine some of the founding and possibly misleading assumptions in these categories. Such assumptions need not be detrimental to scientific progress as long as their limits are respected. We conclude by attempting to concisely state the most significant enigmas still remaining in the origins field and suggest routes to solve them.

Originating centuries ago, as a game played across cultures, hide-and-seek teaches lessons in anticipation, readiness, and adaptability. This call of "ready or not" resonates with the speech-language pathology (SLP) field today, as we face the imperative to anticipate, to be ready, and to adapt for a rapidly changing professional practice, research, and technological landscape.

Abstract:We conduct an experiment where participants make choices between completing a task now or waiting to complete it in the future. We vary the dates when a task can be completed and the effort required at each date. We infer participants' preferences for when to complete a task and their expectations about how their future preferences will differ from their current ones. Our findings indicate that most participants prefer to complete tasks immediately, even if it demands more effort than waiting. Their choices generally align with the principles of time consistency, monotonicity, and time invariance. We show that quasi-hyperbolic discounting, anticipatory utility, fixed costs, decision costs, and cost-of-keeping-track are all unable to provide a reasonable account of both our findings and related experiments.

Abstract:In physics, I noticed subjects not explained by formulas were often not studied, like how uncontrolled growth systems changed form. Weather, businesses, societies, environments, communities, cultures, groups, relationships, lives, and livelihoods all do it following some variation of an 'S' curve. It is a slow-fast-slow process of self-animated contextual energy system development. Making working systems, they seem to develop by "find and connect" in three stages, starting small to first A) freely build designs of growing power, then B) diversify, adapt, respond, and harmonize with others, then C) take on one or more roles in their climax environments. It is a life curve of tremendous syntropic success that then ends with decline. Life is particularly risky for small start-ups, but many do succeed. Many powerful civilizations have emerged, some never growing up but growing as endless startups, only to become fragile, fail, and vanish. That looks like a choice.

iSTART: interactive strategy training for active reading and thinking

Abstract:Interactive Strategy Training for Active Reading and Thinking (iSTART) is a Web-based application that provides young adolescent to college-age students with high-level reading strategy training to improve comprehension of science texts. iSTART is modeled after an effective, human-delivered intervention called self-explanation reading training (SERT), which trains readers to use active reading strategies to self-explain difficult texts more effectively. To make the training more widely available, the Web-based trainer has been developed. Transforming the training from a human-delivered application to a computer-based one has resulted in a highly interactive trainer that adapts its methods to the performance of the students. The iSTART trainer introduces the strategies in a simulated classroom setting with interaction between three animated characters-an instructor character and two student characters-and the human trainee. Thereafter, the trainee identifies the strategies in the explanations of a student character who is guided by an instructor character. Finally, the trainee practices self-explanation under the guidance of an instructor character. We describe this system and discuss how appropriate feedback is generated.

Abstract:Although we are in the heart of the digital revolution era, the original understanding of "start-up" as an enterprise in the early stage still dominated the literature. The vague understanding of the start-up concept led to a considerable misunderstanding, which may be misleading in exploring the launching phenomena. Despite this, fewer studies have addressed this issue and accurately understood it from conceptual or empirical perspectives. This paper aims to illustrate the definition of a start-up. After that, the authors utilised secondary data from the existing academic literature to develop a conceptual framework to understand individual and environmental factors' roles in the intention to launch a new start-up and suggest propositions for a future empirical test. The findings identified individual factors (entrepreneurial ideas, skills) that have remained unclear in the literature. Entrepreneurial ideas and skills can be fundamental in pushing individuals to be entrepreneurs. Moreover, university business incubators might introduce as a moderator; the arguments about their effect on personal and intellectual abilities remain unexplored very well. More inclusive conceptual perspectives are required to provide evidence crucial for developing and filling the existing gap. Based on the proposed framework, the authors encourage scholars to test its propositions empirically.

Abstract:Purpose: Understanding the formation of entrepreneurial intentions is critical, given that it is the first step in the entrepreneurial process. Although entrepreneurial intention has been extensively studied, little attention has been paid on the intended timing of future entrepreneurial projects. This paper analyses entrepreneurial intentions among final-year university students after graduation in terms of the timeframe to start a business. Potentially rapid entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs-in-waiting were compared using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Methodology: A variance-based structural equation modelling approach was used for the sample of 851 final-year university students with entrepreneurial intentions who participated in GUESSS project. Findings: The results obtained contribute to the understanding of how entrepreneurial intentions are formed, particularly, how intended timing plays a moderating role in the relationships of the variables of the theoretical model of TPB. This study provides empirical evidence that significant differences exist between potential rapid entrepreneurs and entrepreneurs-in-waiting. Practical implications: The findings of this study have practical implications for entrepreneurship education, and they can help policy makers develop more effective policies and programs to promote entrepreneurship. Originality: Intention-based models have traditionally examined the intent -- but not the timing -- of new venture creation. However, the time elapsed between the formation of the entrepreneurial intent and the identification of a business opportunity can vary considerably. Therefore, analysing the moderating role of intended timing could be relevant to entrepreneurial intention research.

Abstract:Software startups are newly created companies with no operating history and oriented towards producing cutting-edge products. However, despite the increasing importance of startups in the economy, few scientific studies attempt to address software engineering issues, especially for early-stage startups. If anything, startups need engineering practices of the same level or better than those of larger companies, as their time and resources are more scarce, and one failed project can put them out of business. In this study we aim to improve understanding of the software development strategies employed by startups. We performed this state-of-practice investigation using a grounded theory approach. We packaged the results in the Greenfield Startup Model (GSM), which explains the priority of startups to release the product as quickly as possible. This strategy allows startups to verify product and market fit, and to adjust the product trajectory according to early collected user feedback. The need to shorten time-to-market, by speeding up the development through low-precision engineering activities, is counterbalanced by the need to restructure the product before targeting further growth. The resulting implications of the GSM outline challenges and gaps, pointing out opportunities for future research to develop and validate engineering practices in the startup context.

Abstract:College students seem especially adept at procrastination. Large percents report that it causes lower quality papers and projects, lower exam scores and, to a lesser extent, late or missing assignments. Using survey data collected from a broad cross-section of students and faculty we argue that procrastination can be modeled as a logical, albeit sometimes inefficient, behavior within a rational choice framework. By looking at differences in perceived costs and benefits across individuals and across circumstances we can predict who procrastinates, under what conditions they procrastinate, and how it might effectively be countered.

Abstract:Both narrative and metaphor provide mechanisms for making sense of the world. While metaphors elaborate and articulate particular points in a narrative, narrative provides meaningful connections between sometimes unrelated metaphors, suggesting a symbiotic relationship between the two. The innovative research methodologies and practices that feature in this volume reflect some contemporary post- and trans-movements and reflexive turns of the past 20 years, including post-structuralism, post-humanism, and new materialism. As a collection, this volume emphasizes diversity and difference, rather than looking for a unifying theory or method of narrative and metaphor. As the breadth of work represented here suggests, there are many approaches to narrative and metaphor research. This volume attests to the significance of stories and metaphor in everyday lives and in research.
