Abstract:Due to the increasing pollution by petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs), it is an important task to develop eco-friendly and highly efficient methods for remediating petroleum-contaminated soils. In this study, bioremediation technology was applied to remediate PHs contaminated soils, and the bacterial community structure and physicochemical characteristics of the soil treated using different bioremediation regimens were analyzed. Compared with the control condition (S0), the PHs removal efficiency of biostimulation (S2) and bioaugmentation (S3) was increased significantly. Combined biostimulation with bioaugmentation (S4) had the highest PHs removal efficiency, up to 60.14 ± 4.12%. Among all the selected remediation strategies (S1–S4, S1: soil moisture content: 25–30%), the bacterial alpha-diversity was higher than in S0. The genera Acinetobacter, Escherichia-Shigella, Bacteroides, Microbacterium, and Parabacteroides were found to greatly contribute to PHs’ degradation. In the group S4, the PH-degraders and soil enzyme activity were higher than in the other remediation regimens, and these indices gradually decreased in the mid-to-later periods of all remediation tests. Additionally, the abundance of alkB and nah genes was increased by improving the environmental condition of the microorganism communities. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) had a positive correlation with total PHs degradation. This study offers insights into the microbial community response to environmental factors during bioremediation, which shows a promoting effect in enhancing the efficiency of PHs remediation.

Abstract:Biosorption has been widely recognized as a promising method to treat wastewater. However, few studies have investigated the impact of pollutants’ properties on wastewater treatment, as well as the underlying mechanisms and future predictions. In this study, the effects of pollutants’ hydrophobicity on the biosorptive removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were evaluated. The results showed that the inactive biomass of Klebsiella oxytoca effectively removes PAHs from aqueous solutions with a high biosorption capacity, high biosorption affinity, and short equilibrium time. The biosorption of seven PAHs achieved equilibrium rapidly (less than 2 h) and fitted well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Sorption occurred with a predominantly linear partition process to the biomaterial with Kd values of 363.11, 1719.5, 2515.5, 7343.3, 6353.4, 22,806, and 19,541 L·kg−1 for naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, and fluoranthene, respectively. An increase in temperature led to a decrease in the biosorption affinity, and the bacterial biosorption of PAHs was spontaneous and exothermic. Furthermore, a positive correlation was observed between the sorption affinity and the octanol partition coefficient (Kow) (logKd = 1.011logKow − 0.7369), indicating that hydrophobicity is the main factor influencing the biosorption efficiency. These results suggest that biosorption is an efficient and predictable treatment for micropollutant-bearing wastewater.
Simultaneous degradation of n-hexane and production of biosurfactants by Pseudomonas sp. strain NEE2 isolated from oil-contaminated soils.

Abstract:The presence of surfactants in biofilters could enhance hydrophobic VOC removal. In this study, blood agar plate, methylene blue agar plate and a culture with n-hexane as the only carbon source were used to screen strains that could biodegrade n-hexane and produce biosurfactants simultaneously. The effects of n-hexane concentration on n-hexane removal and biosurfactant production were also investigated. Results showed that such a strain identified to be Pseudomonas sp. Strain NEE2 was successfully isolated from oil-polluted soils. The biosurfactants production by this strain were dependent on the initial concentration of n-hexane (132-2640 mg/L). At the concentration of 2640 mg/L of n-hexane, the biosurfactants promoted n-hexane removal. At 132 mg/L of n-hexane, n-hexane removal efficiency on day 2 exceeded 60%. The synergistic mechanisms of n-hexane removal and biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas sp. Strain NEE2 were discussed including the enhanced mass transfer from gas to liquid phase, within the biofilm phase and biodegradation at the presence of biosurfactants as well as the consequently enhanced production of the biosurfactants. These results in this study proved that it is possible for microorganisms utilizing the synergistic effect of hydrophobic VOC degradation and biosurfactant production for cost-effective hydrophobic VOC removal in biofilters. Abstract:Oil leakage to the sea is a big problem in our society. Droplet-associated oil compounds are slowly degraded due to low bioavailability as well as the harsh saline environment. A strain surviving in a high-saline environment capable of producing biosurfactants should be desirable for rapid biodegradation of crude oil in seawater. In this work, the possibility of biodegradation of crude oil in synthetic seawater was discussed by using Pseudomonas aeruginosa ZJU, a strain isolated from Shengli oilfield (Shangdong, China). The adaptation of this strain in the synthetic seawater was conducted to improve the excretion of biosurfactant (mainly rhamnolipids) and biodegradability of crude oil under the high-saline environment. Although the high salinity of the synthetic water, comparable to deep-sea water, significantly inhibits the rhamnolipid production, the adaptation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa could recover its productivity. It was found that the critical micelle concentration (CMC) was reduced to 24.43 mg L -1 with the assistance of excreted biosurfactants and half of the crude oil was degraded within seven days of culture in the synthetic seawater.
Bacterial chemotaxis to organic pollutants and its influence on biodegradation

Abstract:The bioremediation of organic pollutants is regarded as a safe,economical and efficient strategy. Nevertheless,biodegradation efficiency is not only associated with the degrading capability of bacteria,but also depends on the bioavailability of pollutants,which is influenced by microbial mobility in addition to the soil medium and nature of the pollutants.On account of the high hydrophobicity,most of the soil organic pollutants are strongly adsorbed to soil and the bioavailability is poor. In the past few years,many studies have shown that most motile bacteria can sense and access pollutants through the process of chemotaxis. The chemotactic movement of bacteria can increase the bioavailability of organic pollutants,which in turn has a beneficial role in bioremediation. Chemotaxis has been extensively studied in Escherichia coli,but the E.coli chemosensory system reflects only a small fraction of the diversity of bacterial chemotactic responses. A limited number of compounds like amino acids,organic acids and sugars are the primary attractants for E. coli.Whereas for many free-living bacteria,a much wider range of attractants have been documented,such as naphthalene,toluene,biphenyl,polychlorinated biphenyls,benzoic acid,chlorobenzoic acids,nitroaromatics,methyl parathion and atrazine. The involved species include Pseudomonas sp.,Ralstonia sp.,Azospirillum sp.,Rhizobium sp.,Burkholderia sp. and Arthrobacter sp.At present,there is sufficient evidence indicating that chemotaxis can increase the bioavailability of organic pollutants. The best studied example is the degrading capacity of Pseudomonas putida G7 to naphthalene. In addition,studies about the chemotaxis of Ralstonia sp. SJ98 towards p-nitrophenol and Pseudomonas putida DLL-1 to methyl parathion demonstrated that chemotaxis could enhance in situ bioremediation of soil pollution. The effect of bacterial chemotaxis on degradation implies a significant link between chemotaxis and degradation. Chemotaxis is now only observed towards compounds which can be degraded by the microorganisms,while non-substrate compounds are not found to be chemoattractants. And the observation shows that specific pollutant chemoreceptors are co-localized with the degradation genes on plasmids combined with the coordinately expression of transport,chemoreceptor,and degradation genes,which strongly suggests an inherent link between chemotaxis and degradation.In sum,this paper reviewed recent research progress on bacterial chemotaxis,including signal transduction mechanism,bacterial chemotaxis to typical organic pollutants,with a special focus on the intimate link between chemotaxis and degradation.

Abstract:Clarifying the occurrence and morphological characteristics of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) in soil can facilitate a comprehensive understanding of their migration and transformation patterns in soil/sediment. Additionally, by establishing the dynamic transformation process of each occurrence state, the ecological impact and environmental risk associated with PHs in soil/sediment can be assessed more precisely. The adsorption experiments and closed static incubation experiments was carried out to explore the PHs degradation and fraction distribution in aged contaminated soil under two remediation scenarios of natural attenuation (NA) and bioaugmentation (BA) by exogenous bacteria through a new sequential extraction method based on Tenax-TA, Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and Rhamnolipid (HPCD/RL), accelerated solvent extractor (ASE) unit and alkaline hydrolysis extraction. The adsorption experiment results illustrated that bioaugmentation could promote the desorption of PHs in the adsorption phase, and the soil-water partition coefficient K d decreased from 0.153 L/g to 0.092 L/g. The incubation experiment results showed that compared with natural attenuation, bioaugmentation could improve the utilization of PHs in aged soil and promote the generation of non-extractable hydrocarbons. On the 90th day of the experiment, the concentrations of weakly adsorbed hydrocarbons in the natural attenuation and bioaugmentation experimental groups decreased by 46.44% and 87.07%, respectively, while the concentrations of strongly adsorbed hydrocarbons and non-extractable hydrocarbons increased by 77.93%, 182.14%, and 80.91%, and 501.19%, respectively, compared their initial values. We developed a novel dynamic model and inverted the kinetic parameters of the model by the parameter scanning function and the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method based on the Bayesian approach in COMSOL Multiphysics® finite element software combined with experimental data. There was a good linear relationship between experimental interpolation data and model prediction data. The R 2 for the concentrations of weakly adsorbed hydrocarbons ranged from 0.9953 to 0.9974, for strongly adsorbed hydrocarbons from 0.9063 to 0.9756, and for non-extractable hydrocarbons from 0.9931 to 0.9982. These extremely high correlation coefficients demonstrate the high accuracy of the parameters calculated using the Bayesian inversion method.

Abstract:Marine oil spills directly cause polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) pollution and affect marine organisms due to their toxic property. Chemical and bio-based dispersants composed of surfactants and solvents are considered effective oil spill-treating agents. Dispersants enhance oil biodegradation in the marine environment by rapidly increasing their solubility in the water column. However, the effect of dispersants, especially surfactants, on PAHs degradation by enzymes produced by microorganisms has not been studied at the molecular level. The role of the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme in converting contaminants into reactive metabolites during the biodegradation process has been evidenced, but the activity in the presence of surfactants is still ambiguous. Thus, this study focused on the evaluation of the impact of chemical and bio-surfactants (i.e., Tween 80 (TWE) and Surfactin (SUC)) on the biodegradation of naphthalene (NAP), chrysene (CHR), and pyrene (PYR), the representative components of PAHs, with CYP enzyme from microalgae Parachlorella kessleri using molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The molecular docking analysis revealed that PAHs bound to residues at the CYP active site through hydrophobic interactions for biodegradation. The MD simulation showed that the surfactant addition changed the enzyme conformation in the CYP-PAH complexes to provide more interactions between the enzyme and PAHs. This led to an increase in the enzyme's capability to degrade PAHs. Binding free energy (ΔG‌‌ Bind ) calculations confirmed that surfactant treatment could enhance PAHs degradation by the enzyme. The SUC gave a better result on NAP and PYR biodegradation based on ΔG‌‌ Bind , while TWE facilitated the biodegradation of CHR. The research outputs could greatly facilitate evaluating the behaviors of oil spill-treating agents and oil spill response operations in the marine environment.

Abstract:Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation has been proposed as a promising technology for the treatment of organic polluted soils; however its application has been hindered by the controversial influences and mechanisms of surfactants on the biodegradation of hydrophobic organic compounds. To address this problem, effects of five surfactants on the sorption and biodegradation of pyrene by Klebsiella oxytoca PYR-1, as well as their interactions with bacterial cell surface and membrane lipids were investigated. We found that surfactants enhanced or inhibited pyrene biodegradation depending on their effects on the sorption of pyrene onto bacterial cell, which occurred mainly through modifying cell surface hydrophobicity (such as Tween series surfactants) or disrupting bacterial membrane (such as Triton X-100), respectively. A relatively high positive correlation (P < 0.0001) was observed between biodegradation promotion (B-s*/B-0*) and enhancement of sorption coefficients (K-d,K-s*/K-d,K-0*) for pyrene in the presence of surfactant, indicating that surfactant-induced sorption played the dominant role during pyrene biodegradation. Microbial degradation mechanisms of surface petroleum contaminated seawater in a typical oil trading port

Abstract:Petroleum hydrocarbons are significant new persistent organic pollutants for marine oil spill risk areas. Oil trading ports, in turn, have become major bearers of the risk of offshore oil pollution. However, studies on the molecular mechanisms of microbial degradation of petroleum pollutants by natural seawater are limited. Here, an in situ microcosm study was conducted. Combined with metagenomics, differences in metabolic pathways and in the gene abundances of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) are revealed under different conditions. About 88% degradation of TPH was shown after 3 weeks of treatment. The positive responders to TPH were concentrated in the genera Cycloclasticus, Marivita and Sulfitobacter of the orders Rhodobacterales and Thiotrichales . The genera Marivita, Roseobacter, Lentibacter and Glaciecola were key degradation species when mixing dispersants with oil, and all of the above are from the Proteobacteria phylum. The analysis showed that the biodegradability of aromatic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and dioxin were enhanced after the oil spill, and genes with higher abundances of bphAa, bsdC , nahB, doxE and mhpD were found, but the photosynthesis-related mechanism was inhibited. The dispersant treatment effectively stimulated the microbial degradation of TPH and then accelerated the succession of microbial communities. Meanwhile, functions such as bacterial chemotaxis and carbon metabolism ( cheA, fadeJ and fadE ) were better developed, but the degradation of persistent organic pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was weakened. Our study provides insights into the metabolic pathways and specific functional genes for oil degradation by marine microorganisms and will help improve the application and practice of bioremediation.

Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil and microbial community response: A field study

Abstract:Surfactant-enhanced bioremediation (SEBR) is frequently employed to clean up soil polluted with petroleum hydrocarbons, but few studies have focused on how surfactants affect microbial communities and different fractions of petroleum hydrocarbons, particularly in the field. Here, the surfactants sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS), Triton X-100 (TX-100), Tween80, and rhamnolipid were combined with the oil-degrading bacterium Pseudomonas sp. SB to remediate oil-contaminated soil in the laboratory. AOS gave the highest removal efficiency (65.1%) of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). Therefore, AOS was used in a field experiment with Pseudomonas sp. SB and the removal efficiency of TPHs and long-chain hydrocarbons C21-C40 reached 57.4 and 53.0%, respectively, significantly higher than the other treatments. During bioremediation the addition of Pseudomonas sp. SB significantly stimulated the growth of bacterial genera such as Alcanivorax, Luteimonas, Parvibaculum, Stenotrophomonas, and Pseudomonas and AOS further stimulated the growth of Sphingobacterium, Pseudomonas and Alcanivorax. This study validates the feasibility of surfactant-enhanced bioremediation in the field and partly reveals the mechanism of surfactant-enhanced bioremediation from the perspective of changes in different fractions of petroleum and microbial community dynamics.
Enhanced remediation of oil-contaminated intertidal sediment by bacterial consortium of petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers

Abstract:Oil pollution in intertidal zones is an important environmental issue that has serious adverse effects on coastal ecosystems. This study investigated the efficacy of a bacterial consortium constructed from petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers in the bioremediation of oil-polluted sediment. Inoculation of the constructed consortium significantly enhanced the removal of C8-C40n-alkanes (80.2 ± 2.8% removal efficiency) and aromatic compounds (34.4 ± 10.8% removal efficiency) within 10 weeks. The consortium played dual functions of petroleum degradation and biosurfactant production, greatly improving microbial growth and metabolic activities. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed that the consortium markedly increased the proportions of indigenous alkane-degrading populations (up to 3.88-times higher than that of the control treatment). Microbial community analysis demonstrated that the exogenous consortium activated the degradation functions of indigenous microflora and promoted synergistic cooperation among microorganisms. Our findings indicated that supplementation of a bacterial consortium of petroleum degraders and biosurfactant producers is a promising bioremediation strategy for oil-polluted sediments.

Abstract:Hydrocarbons and their derivative compounds are recalcitrant in nature and causing adverse impacts to the environment and are classified as important pollutants. Removal of these pollutants from the atmosphere is a challenging process. Hydrophobic organic pollutants (HOPs) including crude oil, diesel, dotriacontane (C32), and tetracontane (C40) are subjected to the biodegradation study by using a bacterial consortium consist of Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas stutzeri, and Acinetobacter baumannii. The impact of pH and temperature on the biodegradation process was monitored. During the HOPs biodegradation, the impact of hydrocarbon-degrading extracellular enzymes such as alcohol dehydrogenase, alkane hydroxylase, and lipase was examined, and found average activity about 47.2, 44.3, and 51.8 μmol/mg−1, respectively. Additionally, other enzymes such as catechol 1,2 dioxygenase and catechol 2,3 dioxygenase were found as 118 and 112 μmol/mg−1 Enzyme as an average range in all the HOPs degradation, respectively. Also, the impact of the extracellular polymeric substance and proteins were elucidated during the biodegradation of HOPs with the average range of 116.90, 54.98 mg/L−1 respectively. The impact of biosurfactants on the degradation of different types of HOPs is elucidated. Very slight changes in the pH were also noticed during the biodegradation study. Biodegradation efficiency was calculated as 90, 84, 76, and 72% for crude oil, diesel, C32, and C40, respectively. Changes in the major functional groups (CH, C–O–C, CO, =CH2, CH2, CH3) were confirmed by FTIR analysis and intermediated metabolites were identified by GCMS analysis. The surface-active molecules along with the enzymes played a crucial role in the biodegradation process.

Abstract:In the process of marine oil spill remediation, adding highly efficient oil degrading microorganisms can effectively promote oil degradation. However, in practice, the effect is far less than expected due to the inadaptability of microorganisms to the environment and their disadvantage in the competition with indigenous bacteria for nutrients. In this article, four strains of oil degrading bacteria were isolated from seawater in Jiaozhou Bay, China, where a crude oil pipeline explosion occurred seven years ago. Results of high-throughput sequencing, diesel degradation tests and surface activity tests indicated that Peseudomonas aeruginosa ZS1 was a highly efficient petroleum degrading bacterium with the ability to produce surface active substances. A diesel oil-degrading bacterial consortium (named SA) was constructed by ZS1 and another oil degrading bacteria by diesel degradation test. Degradation products analysis indicated that SA has a good ability to degrade short chain alkanes, especially n-alkanes (C10-C18). Community structure analysis showed that OTUs of Alcanivorax, Peseudomona, Ruegeria, Pseudophaeobacter, Hyphomonas and Thalassospira on genus level increased after the oil spill and remained stable throughout the recovery period. Most of these enriched microorganisms were related to known alkane and hydrocarbon degraders by the previous study. However, it is the first time to report that Pseudophaeobacter was enriched by using diesel as the sole carbon source. The results also indicated that ZS1 may have a dominant position in competition with indigenous bacteria. Oil pollution has an obvious selective effect on marine microorganisms. Although the oil degradation was promoted after SA injection, the recovery of microbial community structure took a longer time.

Abstract:In the present study, the efficiency of four different strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and their biosurfactants in the bioremediation process were investigated. The strains were found to be capable of metabolizing a wide range of hydrocarbons (HCs) with preference for high molecular weight aliphatic (ALP) over aromatic (ARO) compounds. After treating with individual bacteria and 11 different consortia, the residual crude oils were quantified and qualitatively analyzed. The bacterial strains degraded ALP, ARO, and nitrogen, sulphur, oxygen (NSO) containing fractions of the crude oil by 73–67.5, 31.8–12.3 and 14.7–7.3%, respectively. Additionally, the viscosity of the residual crude oil reduced from 48.7 to 34.6–39 mPa s. Further, consortium designated as 7 and 11 improved the degradation of ALP, ARO, and NSO HCs portions by 80.4–78.6, 42.7–42.4 and 21.6–19.2%, respectively. Moreover, addition of biosurfactant further increased the degradation performance of consortia by 81.6–80.7, 43.8–42.6 and 22.5–20.7%, respectively. Gas chromatographic analysis confirmed the ability of the individual strains and their consortium to degrade various fractions of crude oil. Experiments with biosurfactants revealed that polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are more soluble in the presence of biosurfactants. Phenanthrene had the highest solubility among the tested PAHs, which further increased as biosurfactant doses raised above their respective critical micelle concentrations (CMC). Furthermore, biosurfactants were able to recover 73.5–63.4% of residual oil from the sludge within their respective CMCs. Hence, selected surfactant-producing bacteria and their consortium could be useful in developing a greener and eco-sustainable way for removing crude oil pollutants from soil.

Effect of Bioaugmentation and Biostimulation on Hydrocarbon Degradation and Bacterial Community Composition in Different Petroleum-Contaminated Soil Layers

Abstract:Oil spills during extraction and use are seriously threatening human health. Hence, effective bioremediation is a prerequisite for environmental and human well-being. In this study, bioremediation was performed by natural attenuation (NA), bioaugmentation (BA), and biostimulation (BS) microcosmic experiments. Gas chromatography and high-throughput sequencing were used to explore the changes in hydrocarbon degradation and bacterial community structure in different layers of contaminated soil, respectively. The results showed that the deep soil contained mainly C17‒C21 fractions. In 300 days, the degradation rates of soil total petroleum hydrocarbons in surface, middle, and deep soils were 99.87%, 96.04%, and 71.63% in the BA group; 99.75%, 95.73%, and 99.84% in the BS group; and 8.55%, 8.64%, and 9.84% in the NA group, respectively. Most of the petroleum hydrocarbon fractions were completely degraded by the end of remediation experiments. There were noticeable changes in the structure and relative abundance of soil bacteria in the different treatments compared to the original soil. Proteobacteria was the dominant phylum in all soil samples and Pseudomonas became the dominant genus in the BA group. In the BA and BS group, the germination rate of mung bean seeds was > 72.5% in all cases, which was six times higher than that of the NA group. Thus, bioremediation reduced the toxicity of contaminated soil in a shorter period of time than NA, and this study could act as a reference for treatment of contaminated soil in oil recovery areas.

Abstract:Abstract Understanding the metabolic characteristics and controlled geochemical factors of functional microorganisms in petroleum‐contaminated areas at different locations is pivotal for enhancing pollutant removal strategies. To address the existing research gap in this domain, we employed stable‐isotope‐probing (SIP) with multi‐isotope labeling substrates, combined with 16S amplicon sequencing, metagenomic sequencing, and geochemical factor analysis. Utilizing n ‐hexadecane and phenanthrene as model compounds, our study revealed location‐specific differences in the composition of functional microorganisms. Despite these variances, key players such as Pseudomonas , Marinobacter , Alcanivorax , Ochrobactrum , and Sphingomonas consistently emerged as active degraders of n ‐hexadecane and/or phenanthrene. Several genera, including Pseudomonas , Ochrobactrum , Alcanivorax , Nitriliruptoraceae , and Sphingobacterium , demonstrated versatility by effectively degrading both contaminants. SIP‐metagenomic binning facilitated the acquisition of genomes from key active degraders, such as Pseudomonas sp., Ochrobactrum sp., Sphingomonas sp., and Shinella sp. This enabled a comprehensive analysis of petroleum hydrocarbon degradation pathways and genes, encompassing PAH dioxygenase genes, alkB genes, phthalate, and salicylate‐related pathways. Environmental factor and variation partitioning analysis revealed that oil pollution significantly influences the functional microbial community (12%), followed by available potassium and available nitrogen. Geochemical parameters and geographic location independently explained 14% and 21% of total variations, respectively. Intriguingly, more than half (51%) of the variation in functional microbial community structure remains unexplained, possibly due to unmeasured environmental variables. Our study contributes valuable insights into the in situ bioremediation mechanism for petroleum‐contaminated soil, elucidating factors influencing functional microbial structures across locations. These findings provide a vital theoretical reference for in situ regulation and bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon pollution in diverse environmental contexts.

Abstract:Environmental pollution by petroleum hydrocarbon is one of the significant concerns of the contemporary world. This paper deals with the relevant environmental issues concerning the oil pollution of the petroleum industry. There is a need for further development of sustainable remediation technologies. Nineteen petroleum-degrading bacteria were isolated from an oil-polluted soil in the Suez oil processing company in Egypt. However, two bacterial species showed the highest growth rate of oil hydrocarbons. These isolates were identified by 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis into Flavobacterium johnsoniae BS1 (NCBI Gene Bank Accession no. MT740243) and Shewanella baltica BS2 (NCBI Gene Bank Accession no. MT740157). Ionic liquids prepared the goethite-chitosan nanocomposite assisted synthetic hydrothermal method. The antibacterial activity of synthesized nanocomposite on BS1and BS2 was determined. The two oil-degrading bacterial strains were immobilized onto the surface of the prepared nanocomposite. Pure and bacterial consortium studied the bioremediation process without/with nanocomposite. The remaining oil after bioremediation was extracted. Study results demonstrated that the affinity between the surface of bacterial cells and the prepared nanocomposite was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the antibacterial activity test of nanocomposite, there is no toxic effect on the two biodegrading microorganisms. The remaining oil after biodegradation showed that immobilized bacterial consortium achieved the maximum degradation efficiency 93.32% after 3 days of incubation. Biodegradation of different polyaromatic hydrocarbons was also studied, and immobilized bacterial consortium showed good biodegradation capabilities compared to those of free and pure cells. The nanocomposite catalyst increases the microbiological reaction rates by stimulating the activity of microbes during the biodegradation process. With this excellent biodegradation efficiency, these results suggested that the immobilized BS1 and BS2 consortium entailed high potential treatment for industrial applications for the biodegradation of oil-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Crude oil spills imperil aquatic ecosystems globally, prompting innovative solutions such as microalgae-based bioremediation. The potential of Tetradesmus obliquus and Desmodesmus armatus for crude oil spill bioremediation is investigated in this study. Under mixotrophic conditions and varying crude oil concentrations (0.5 to 2%), both species showed decent resistance, sustaining growth, and adaptation at low crude oil exposure levels below 1%. Both algae exhibited peak growth rates at a 0.5% crude oil concentration. In T. obliquus , chlorophyll-a levels increased with 0.5% crude oil exposure, while chlorophyll-b and carotenoid levels remained fairly consistent. Conversely, D. armatus exhibited variable chlorophyll-a and carotenoid levels at the 0.5% crude oil concentration, accompanied by an uptick in chlorophyll-b levels. GC/MS analyses revealed that T. obliquus efficiently degraded aliphatic compounds like undecane, tridecane, and pentadecane. Additionally, T. obliquus outperformed D. armatus in degrading both aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. The study identifies the modified Richards model efficacy for T. obliquus , while the Baranyi-Roberts model exhibited superiority for D. armatus as optimal for representing growth kinetics in response to crude oil exposure. This insight is crucial for tailored bioremediation strategies, emphasizing species-specific adaptability and concentration considerations. Overall, the study provides vital information for designing targeted approaches to address crude oil contamination challenges, contributing to effective environmental restoration in contaminated ecosystems.

Abstract:The amount and biodegradability of oil-degrading bacteria in seawater should be augmented to improve the biodegradation of marine petroleum hydrocarbons. This study investigated the degradation of petroleum-degrading bacteria (P1) with biosurfactant-producing bacteria (B2) and its mechanism. Two groups of experiments that consist of P1 with and without B2 were designed. The degradation performance and surface characteristics of the bacteria and the degradation path of diesel were studied. The degradation rate in the group of P1 with B2 was 82.65%, which was higher than that without B2, after 12 days. The analysis of surface characteristics showed that a high hydrophobicity enabled diesel to be accessible to cells. Meanwhile, the addition of B2 increased the contact area between bacteria and diesel, which was favorable to bioaugmentation degradation. The diesel degradation paths included surface adsorption, cell uptake, and biodegradation. The first step of diesel degradation was a rapid surface adsorption followed by cell uptake. The velocities of the removal rate of diesel by biodegradation and cell uptake in the group of P1 with B2 were higher than those without B2.

Abstract:Three soils were modified with two kinds of cationic surfactants in order to increase their sorptive capabilities for organic contaminants. Sorption of diesel fuel oil in water by these modified soils had been investigated. Modified soils can effectively sorb diesel fuel oil from water. The sorption capability of modified soils is: HDTMA-black soil>HDTMA-yellow brown soil>HDTMA-red soil>TMA-black soil>TMA-yellow brown soil>TMA-red soil. Sorption of diesel fuel oil by natural soils and HDTMA modified soils is via partition, the sorption isotherms can be expressed by Henry equation, and logKSOM is 2.42–2.80, logKHDTMA is 3.37–3.60. Sorption isotherms of TMA modified soils can be expressed by Langmuir equation, the saturation sorption capacities are 1150 (TMA-black soil), 750 (TMA-yellow-brown soil), 171 mg/kg (TMA-red soil), respectively. A diesel fuel oil degradation micro-organism (Pseudomonas sp.) was isolated in the lab. To test the influence of the modified soils on the micro-organism, various growth curves of Pseudomonas in different conditions were drawn. Pseudomonas can grow very well with natural soils and TMA modified soils. The acclimation period of Pseudomonas is reduced. As to HDTMA modified soils, HDTMA loading amount is very important. When HDTMA loading amount is no higher than 0.5CEC, the micro-organism can grow very well after a long acclimation period.
