Abstract:AbstractBrain networks provided powerful tools for the analysis and diagnosis of epilepsy. This paper performed a pairwise comparative analysis on the brain networks of Benign Childhood Epilepsy with Centrotemporal Spikes (BECTS): spike group (spike), non‐spike group (non‐spike), and control group (control). In this study, fragments with and without interictal spikes in electroencephalograms of 13 BECTS children during non‐rapid eye movement sleep stage I (NREMI) were selected to construct dynamic brain function networks to explore the functional connectivity (FC). Graph theory and statistical analysis were exploited to investigate changes in FC across different brain regions in different frequency bands. From this study, we can draw the following conclusions: (1) Both spike and non‐spike have lower energy in each brain region on the γ band. (2) With the increase of the frequency band, the FC strength of spike, non‐spike and control groups are all weakened. (3) Spikes are correlated with brain network efficiency and the small‐world property. (4) Spikes increase the FC of temporal, parietal and occipital regions except in the γ band and the absence of spikes weakens the FC of the entire brain region.

Abstract:Background: Epilepsy was defined as an abnormal brain network model disease in the latest definition. From a microscopic perspective, it is also particularly important to observe the Mutual Information (MI) of the whole brain network based on different lead positions. Methods: In this study, we selected EEG data from representative temporal lobe and frontal lobe epilepsy patients. Based on Phase Space Reconstruction and the calculation of MI indicator, we used Complex Network technology to construct a dynamic brain network function model of epilepsy seizure. At the same time, about the analysis of our network, we described the index changes and propagation paths of epilepsy discharge in different periods, and spatially monitors the seizure change process based on the analysis of the parameter characteristics of the complex network. Results: Our model portrayed the functional synergy between the various regions of the brain and the state transition during the seizure process. We also characterized the EEG synchronous propagation path and core nodes during seizures. The results shown the full node change path and the distribution of important indicators during the seizure process, which makes the state change of the seizure process more clearly. Conclusion: In this study, we have demonstrated that synchronization-based brain networks change with time and space. The EEG synchronous propagation path and core nodes during epileptic seizures can provide a reference for finding the focus area.
Time-Varying Networks of Inter-Ictal Discharging Reveal Epileptogenic Zone.

Abstract:The neuronal synchronous discharging may cause an epileptic seizure. Currently, most of the studies conducted to investigate the mechanism of epilepsy are based on EEGs or functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) recorded during the ictal discharging or the resting-state, and few studies have probed into the dynamic patterns during the inter-ictal discharging that are much easier to record in clinical applications. Here, we propose a time-varying network analysis based on adaptive directed transfer function to uncover the dynamic brain network patterns during the inter-ictal discharging. In addition, an algorithm based on the time-varying outflow of information derived from the network analysis is developed to detect the epileptogenic zone. The analysis performed revealed the time-varying network patterns during different stages of inter-ictal discharging; the epileptogenic zone was activated prior to the discharge onset then worked as the source to propagate the activity to other brain regions. Consistence between the epileptogenic zones detected by our proposed approach and the actual epileptogenic zones proved that time-varying network analysis could not only reveal the underlying neural mechanism of epilepsy, but also function as a useful tool in detecting the epileptogenic zone based on the EEGs in the inter-ictal discharging.
Time-variant Epileptic Brain Functional Connectivity of Focal and Generalized Seizure in Chronic Temporal Lobe Epilepsy Rat.

Abstract:Seizure types and characteristics may vary with time in a patient with distinct mechanisms underlying the propagation of ictal activity. Similarly, we found that both focal and generalized seizures coexist in some pilocarpine-induced chronic temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) rats. In different seizure patterns, mapping complex networks and analyzing epileptic characteristics involved in seizure propagation are likely to reflect seizure propagation mechanisms, and indicate the establishment of stimulation strategy for epilepsy treatment, especially on the selection of stimulation targets. In our study, we used Granger causality method to track the time-variant epileptic brain functional connectivity in focal and generalized seizures from multi-site local field potentials (LFPs). Results showed that these two major types of seizures had different propagation patterns during ictal period. When comparing them, generalized seizures involved in a network with more complex relationships and spread to more extensive brain regions than in local seizures at mid-ictal stage. Moreover, we observed that focal seizures had a focused causal hub with strong interactions, while generalized seizures had relative distributed causal hubs to drive the development of seizure during seizure-onset stage. These findings suggest that stimulation strategy might need to be adapted to different seizure types thus allowing for retuning abnormal epileptic brain network and obtaining better treatment effect on seizure suppression.

Abstract:The variability in the propagation pathway in epilepsy is a main factor contributing to surgical treatment failure. Ways to accurately capture the brain propagation network and quantitatively assess its evolution remain poorly described. This work aims to develop a dynamic step effective network (dSTE) to obtain the propagation path network of multiple seizures in the same patient and explore the degree of dissimilarity. Multichannel stereo-electroencephalography (sEEG) signals were acquired with ictal processes involving continuous changes in information propagation. We utilized high-order dynamic brain networks to obtain propagation networks through different levels of linking steps. We proposed a dissimilarity index based on singular value decomposition to quantitatively compare seizure pathways. Simulated data were generated through The Virtual Brain, and the reliability of this method was verified through ablation experiments. By applying the proposed method to two datasets consisting of 29 patients total, the evolution processes of each patient's seizure networks was obtained, and the within-patient dissimilarities were quantitatively compared. Finally, three types of brain network connectivity patterns were found. Type I patients have a good prognosis, while type III patients are prone to postoperative recurrence. This method captures the evolution of seizure propagation networks and assesses their dissimilarity more reliably than existing methods, demonstrating good robustness for studying the propagation path differences for multiple seizures in epilepsy patients. The three different patterns will be important considerations when planning epilepsy surgery under sEEG guidance.

Abstract:Objective: In the past, the localization of seizure onset zone (SOZ) primarily relied on traditional EEG signal analysis methods. However, due to their limited spatial and temporal resolution, accurately pinpointing neural activity was challenging, thereby restricting their clinical applicability. Compared with traditional EEG signals, SEEG signals have superior spatial and temporal resolution, and can more accurately record neural activity near epileptic foci, making them better suited for studying SOZ. In addition, the traditional EEG signal analysis methods still have limitations, mainly focusing on the analysis of local signal features, while ignoring the complexity and interconnection of the overall brain network. How to more accurately locate SOZ is still not well resolved. The purpose of this study is to develop an effective positioning method for more accurate positioning. Method: To overcome these limitations, this study proposed a model integrating brain functional network analysis with nonlinear dynamics. We utilized weighted phase lag index (WPLI) to construct brain functional network, epilepic network connectivity strength (ENCS) as the feature, and introduced persistence entropy (PE) for feature fusion, subsequently employing support vector machine (SVM) classification. Results: The proposed method was verified on the HUP-iEEG dataset, our solution identified the SOZ with 0.9440 accuracy, 0.9848 precision, 0.8974 recall rate, 0.9340 F 1 score and 0.9697 area under the ROC curve across patients, which outperforms the existing approaches. It exhibits a 2.30 percentage point enhancement in localisation accuracy along with a 2.97 percentage points in AUC compared to others. Conclusion: Our method consider the interactions between nodes in brain network connections, as well as the inherent nonlinear and non-stationary properties of neural signals, to be more robust.

Abstract:As a brain disorder, epilepsy is characterized with abnormal hypersynchronous neural firings. It is known that seizures initiate and propagate in different brain regions. Long-term intracranial multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) reflects broadband ictal activity under seizure occurrence. Network-based techniques are efficient in discovering brain dynamics and offering finger-print features for specific individuals. In this study, we adopt link prediction for proposing a novel workflow aiming to quantify seizure dynamics and uncover pathological mechanisms of epilepsy. A dataset of EEG signals was enrolled that recorded from 8 patients with 3 different types of pharmocoresistant focal epilepsy. Weighted networks are obtained from phase locking value (PLV) in subband EEG oscillations. Common neighbor (CN), resource allocation (RA), Adamic-Adar (AA), and Sorenson algorithms are brought in for link prediction performance comparison. Results demonstrate that RA outperforms its rivals. Similarity, matrix was produced from the RA technique performing on EEG networks later. Nodes are gathered to form sequences by selecting the ones with the highest similarity. It is demonstrated that variations are in accordance with seizure attack in node sequences of gamma band EEG oscillations. What is more, variations in node sequences monitor the total seizure journey including its initiation and termination.

Abstract:Objective: For the surgical treatment of epilepsy, localization of the seizure onset zone is essential. Studies have shown that the origin of epilepsy is closely related to the epileptogenic network in brain, so the epileptic activity propagation network may provide a new biomarker for localizing the seizure onset zone. Methods: In order to investigate the significance of epilepsy propagation networks for the localization and resection of seizure onset zone, a combination of high-frequency oscillation propagation networks and seizure propagation networks was processed through unsupervised and semi-supervised graph convolutional networks for comprehensive epilepsy propagation networks. The confidence coefficient of each electrode being located in the seizure onset zone was obtained, and electrodes closely related to the pathogenic epileptogenic network were located. Results: The brain region localized using our proposed method covers 90% of the clinically diagnosed seizure onset zone. Conclusion: Compared to seizure propagation networks or high-frequency oscillatory propagation networks alone, the combined epilepsy propagation network based on graph convolutional networks was more strongly related with the possible epileptogenic brain region represented by the clinically diagnosed seizure onset zone. Significance: The epilepsy propagation network combined high-frequency oscillation propagation networks and seizure propagation networks may provide a better reference for prognosis.

Abstract:Epilepsy, a chronic neuropsychiatric brain disorder characterized with recurrent seizures, is closely associated with abnormal neural communications within the brain. Despite that the phase-amplitude coupling (PAC) has been suggested to offer a new way to observe neural interactions during epilepsy, however, few studies pay attention to alterations of the epileptic functional brain network based on PAC, especially on the [Formula: see text] PAC. Therefore, we use scalp electroencephalography (EEG) data of epileptic patients and the [Formula: see text] PAC modulation index (MI) to construct functional brain networks to examine variations of neural interactions during different epileptic phases. Statistically, the findings show that between-channel MI values in the post-ictal period significantly increase compared to that in the pre-ictal period, and the between-channel MI value has a close association with the information of phase and amplitude provided by the channels. Importantly, in both the phase-amplitude and amplitude-phase functional brain networks, the average node degree is remarkably higher in the post-ictal period than that in the pre-ictal period, whereas the characteristic path length in the ictal and post-ictal periods is significantly lower than that in the pre-ictal period. Besides, the average betweenness centrality in the post-ictal period is remarkably higher than that in the ictal period. Interestingly, the positive correlations between within-channel MI values and between-channel MI values can be observed during the pre-ictal, ictal and post-ictal periods. These findings suggest that the [Formula: see text] PAC-based functional brain network may provide a novel perspective to understanding alterations of neural interactions during the epileptic evolution, and may contribute to effectively controlling the spread of epileptic seizures.
Dynamic Changes of Brain Network during Epileptic Seizure

Abstract:Epilepsy is a neurological disorder identified by sudden and recurrent seizures, which are believed to be accompanied by distinct changes in brain dynamics. Exploring the dynamic changes of brain network states during seizures can pave the way for improving the diagnosis and treatment of patients with epilepsy. In this paper, the connectivity brain network is constructed using the phase lag index (PLI) measurement within five frequency bands, and graph-theoretic techniques are employed to extract topological features from the brain network. Subsequently, an unsupervised clustering approach is used to examine the state transitions of the brain network during seizures. Our findings demonstrate that the level of brain synchrony during the seizure period is higher than the pre-seizure and post-seizure periods in the theta, alpha, and beta bands, while it decreases in the gamma bands. These changes in synchronization also lead to alterations in the topological features of functional brain networks during seizures. Additionally, our results suggest that the dynamics of the brain during seizures are more complex than the traditional three-state model (pre-seizure, seizure, and post-seizure) and the brain network state exhibits a slower rate of change during the seizure period compared to the pre-seizure and post-seizure periods.

Abstract:ObjectiveAbnormal and dynamic epileptogenic networks cause difficulties for clinical epileptologists in the localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) and the epileptogenic zone (EZ) in preoperative assessments of patients with refractory epilepsy. The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of time-varying effective connectivity networks in various non-seizure and seizure periods, and to propose a quantitative approach for accurate localization of SOZ and EZ.MethodsWe used electrocorticogram recordings in the temporal lobe and hippocampus from seven patients with temporal lobe epilepsy to characterize the effective connectivity dynamics at a high temporal resolution using the full-frequency adaptive directed transfer function (ffADTF) measure and five graph metrics, i.e., the out-degree (OD), closeness centrality (CC), betweenness centrality (BC), clustering coefficient (C), and local efficiency (LE). The ffADTF effective connectivity network was calculated and described in five frequency bands (δ, θ, α, β, and γ) and five seizure periods (pre-seizure, early seizure, mid-seizure, late seizure, and post-seizure). The cortical areas with high values of graph metrics in the transient seizure onset network were compared with the SOZ and EZ identified by clinical epileptologists and the results of epilepsy resection surgeries.ResultsOrigination and propagation of epileptic activity were observed in the high time resolution ffADTF effective connectivity network throughout the entire seizure period. The seizure-specific transient seizure onset ffADTF network that emerged at seizure onset time remained for approximately 20–50 ms with strong connections generated from both SOZ and EZ. The values of graph metrics in the SOZ and EZ were significantly larger than that in the other cortical areas. More cortical areas with the highest mean of graph metrics were the same as the clinically determined SOZ in the low-frequency δ and θ bands and in Engel Class I patients than in higher frequency α, β, and γ bands and in Engel Class II and III patients. The OD and C were more likely to localize the SOZ and EZ than CC, BC, and LE in the transient seizure onset network.ConclusionThe high temporal resolution ffADTF effective connectivity analysis combined with the graph theoretical analysis helps us to understand how epileptic activity is generated and propagated during the seizure period. The newly discovered seizure-specific transient seizure onset network could be an important biomarker and a promising tool for more precise localization of the SOZ and EZ in preoperative evaluations.

High-Dimensional Directional Brain Network Analysis for Focal Epileptic Seizures

Abstract:The brain is a high-dimensional directional network system consisting of many regions as network nodes that influence each other. The directional influence from one region to another is referred to as directional connectivity. Epilepsy is a directional network disorder, as epileptic activity spreads from a seizure onset zone (SOZ) to many other regions after seizure onset. However, directional network studies of epilepsy have been mostly limited to low-dimensional directional networks between the SOZ and contiguous regions due to the lack of efficient methods for analyzing high-dimensional directional brain networks. To address this gap, we study high-dimensional directional networks in epileptic brains by using a clustering-enabled multivariate autoregressive state-space model (MARSS) to analyze multi-channel intracranial EEG recordings of focal seizures. This new MARSS characterizes the SOZ, nearby regions, and many other non-SOZ regions as one integrated high-dimensional directional network system with a clustering feature. Using the new MARSS, we reveal changes in high-dimensional directional brain networks throughout seizure development. We simultaneously identify directional connections and the SOZ cluster, regions most affected by SOZ activity, in different seizure periods. We found that, after seizure onset, the numbers of directional connections of the SOZ and regions in the SOZ cluster increase significantly. We also reveal that many regions outside the SOZ cluster have no changes in directional connections, although these regions' EEG data signal ictal activity. Lastly, we use these high-dimensional network results to localize the SOZ and achieve 100% true positive rates and less than 3% false positive rates for different SOZ locations.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a network disease. The epileptic network usually involves spatially distributed brain regions. In this context, noninvasive M/EEG source connectivity is an emerging technique to identify functional brain networks at cortical level from noninvasive recordings. In this paper, we analyze the effect of the two key factors involved in EEG source connectivity processing: (i) the algorithm used in the solution of the EEG inverse problem and (ii) the method used in the estimation of the functional connectivity. We evaluate four inverse solutions algorithms (dSPM, wMNE, sLORETA and cMEM) and four connectivity measures (r2, h2, PLV, and MI) on data simulated from a combined biophysical/physiological model to generate realistic interictal epileptic spikes reflected in scalp EEG. We use a new network-based similarity index to compare between the network identified by each of the inverse/connectivity combination and the original network generated in the model. The method will be also applied on real data recorded from one epileptic patient who underwent a full presurgical evaluation for drug-resistant focal epilepsy. In simulated data, results revealed that the selection of the inverse/connectivity combination has a significant impact on the identified networks. Results suggested that nonlinear methods (nonlinear correlation coefficient, phase synchronization and mutual information) for measuring the connectivity are more efficient than the linear one (the cross correlation coefficient). The wMNE inverse solution showed higher performance than dSPM, cMEM and sLORETA. In real data, the combination (wMNE/PLV) led to a very good matching between the interictal epileptic network identified from noninvasive EEG recordings and the network obtained from connectivity analysis of intracerebral EEG recordings. These results suggest that source connectivity method, when appropriately configured, is able to extract highly relevant diagnostic information about networks involved in interictal epileptic spikes from non-invasive dense-EEG data.

Localization of the epileptogenic zone based on ictal stereo-electroencephalogram: Brain network and single-channel signal feature analysis

Abstract:Accurate localization of the epileptogenic zone (EZ) is crucial for refractory focal epilepsy patients to achieve freedom from seizures following epilepsy surgery. In this study, ictal stereo-electroencephalography data from 35 patients with refractory focal epilepsy were analyzed. Effective networks based on partial directed coherence were analyzed, and a gray level co-occurrence matrix was applied to extract the time-varying features of the in-degree. These features, combined with the single-channel signal time-frequency features, including approximate entropy and line length, were used to localize the EZ based on a cluster algorithm. For all seizure-free patients (n = 23), the proposed method was effective in identifying the clinical-EZ-contacts and clinical-EZ-blocks, with an F1-score of 62.47 % and 72.18 %, respectively. The sensitivity was 96.00 % for the clinical-EZ-block identification, which provided the information for the decision-making of clinicians, prompting clinicians to focus on the identified EZ-blocks and their nearby contacts. The agreement between the EZ identified by the proposed method and the clinical-EZ was worse for non-seizure-free patients (n = 12) than for seizure-free patients. Furthermore, our method provided better results than using only brain network or single-channel signal features. This suggests that combining these complementary features can facilitate more accurate localization of the EZ.
Transition of Brain Networks from an Interictal to a Preictal State Preceding a Seizure Revealed by Scalp EEG Network Analysis.

Abstract:Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in the brain that is characterized by unprovoked seizures. Epileptic seizures are attributed to abnormal synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. To detect the seizure as early as possible, the identification of specific electroencephalogram (EEG) dynamics is of great importance in investigating the transition of brain activity as the epileptic seizure approaches. In this study, we investigated the transition of brain activity from interictal to preictal states preceding a seizure by combining EEG network and clustering analyses together in different frequency bands. The findings of this study demonstrated the best clustering performance of k-medoids in the beta band; in addition, compared to the interictal state, the preictal state experienced increased synchronization of EEG network connectivity, characterized by relatively higher network properties. These findings can provide helpful insight into the mechanism of epilepsy, which can also be used in the prediction of epileptic seizures and subsequent intervention.
Epileptogenic network of focal epilepsies mapped with cortico-cortical evoked potentials

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objective</h3><p>The goal of this study was to investigate the spatial extent and functional organization of the epileptogenic network through cortico-cortical evoked potentials (CCEPs) in patients being evaluated with intracranial stereoelectroencephalography.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Methods</h3><p>We retrospectively included 25 patients. We divided the recorded sites into three regions: epileptogenic zone (EZ); propagation zone (PZ); and noninvolved zone (NIZ). The root mean square of the amplitudes was calculated to reconstruct effective connectivity network. We also analyzed the N1/N2 amplitudes to explore the responsiveness influenced by epileptogenicity. Prognostic analysis was performed by comparing intra-region and inter-region connectivity between seizure-free and non-seizure-free groups.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>Our results confirmed that stimulation of the EZ caused the strongest responses on other sites within and outside the EZ. Moreover, we found a hierarchical connectivity pattern showing the highest connectivity strength within EZ, and decreasing connectivity gradient from EZ, PZ to NIZ. Prognostic analysis indicated a stronger intra-EZ connection in the seizure-free group.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusion</h3><p>The EZ showed highest excitability and dominantly influenced other regions. Quantitative CCEPs can be useful in mapping epileptic networks and predicting surgical outcome.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Significance</h3><p>The generated computational connectivity model may enhance our understanding of epileptogenic networks and provide useful information for surgical planning and prognosis prediction.</p>

Abstract:Objective Postsurgical seizure freedom in drug‐resistant epilepsy (DRE) patients varies from 30% to 80%, implying that in many cases the current approaches fail to fully map the epileptogenic zone (EZ). We aimed to advance a novel approach to better characterize epileptogenicity and investigate whether the EZ encompasses a broader epileptogenic network (EpiNet) beyond the seizure zone (SZ) that exhibits seizure activity. Methods We first used computational modeling to test putative complex systems‐driven and systems neuroscience‐driven mechanistic biomarkers for epileptogenicity. We then used these biomarkers to extract features from resting‐state stereoelectroencephalograms recorded from DRE patients and trained supervised classifiers to localize the SZ against gold standard clinical localization. To further explore the prevalence of pathological features in an extended brain network outside of the clinically identified SZ, we also used unsupervised classification. Results Supervised SZ classification trained on individual features achieved accuracies of .6–.7 area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Combining all criticality and synchrony features further improved the AUC to .85. Unsupervised classification discovered an EpiNet‐like cluster of brain regions, in which 51% of brain regions were outside of the SZ. Brain regions in the EpiNet‐like cluster engaged in interareal hypersynchrony and locally exhibited high‐amplitude bistability and excessive inhibition, which was strikingly similar to the high seizure risk regime revealed by our computational modeling. Significance The finding that combining biomarkers improves SZ localization accuracy indicates that the novel mechanistic biomarkers for epileptogenicity employed here yield synergistic information. On the other hand, the discovery of SZ‐like brain dynamics outside of the clinically defined SZ provides empirical evidence of an extended pathophysiological EpiNet.

Epileptogenic Zone Localization and Network Analysis Based on High Frequency Intracranial EEG During Seizure

Abstract:Objective To localize epileptogenic zone and to analyze its network coherence using high frequency intracranial EEG during seizure.Methods First, a normalized high frequency energy index (HFEI) was calculated using intracranial EEG.Then, the index was used to quantify the epileptogenicity of each electrode.Finally, the wavelet coherence was estimated between epileptogenic and non-epileptogenic electrodes.Results The HFEI of intracranial EEG (1252 contacts) from 8 patients with good postoperative outcome were extracted and those electrodes with HFEI above the threshold were identified as epileptogenic electrodes.Compared with physician's localization results, the sensitivity of our method was 29.57%, and specificity was 96.67%.Average coherence between epileptic electrodes of the 8 patients selected by HFEI was significantly higher than that between non epileptic electrodes.Conclusions As a nonparametric statistical method, the HFEI index we propose is successfully used to localize epileptogenic network, with higher specificity than previous studies, which meets the need of identifying the key epileptic electrodes during pre-surgical planning.
BOLD-fMRI activity informed by network variation of scalp EEG in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy

Abstract:Epilepsy is marked by hypersynchronous bursts of neuronal activity, and seizures can propagate variably to any and all areas, leading to brain network dynamic organization. However, the relationship between the network characteristics of scalp EEG and blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) responses in epilepsy patients is still not well known. In this study, simultaneous EEG and fMRI data were acquired in 18 juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) patients. Then, the adapted directed transfer function (ADTF) values between EEG electrodes were calculated to define the time-varying network. The variation of network information flow within sliding windows was used as a temporal regressor in fMRI analysis to predict the BOLD response. To investigate the EEG-dependent functional coupling among the responding regions, modulatory interactions were analyzed for network variation of scalp EEG and BOLD time courses. The results showed that BOLD activations associated with high network variation were mainly located in the thalamus, cerebellum, precuneus, inferior temporal lobe and sensorimotor-related areas, including the middle cingulate cortex (MCC), supplemental motor area (SMA), and paracentral lobule. BOLD deactivations associated with medium network variation were found in the frontal, parietal, and occipital areas. In addition, modulatory interaction analysis demonstrated predominantly directional negative modulation effects among the thalamus, cerebellum, frontal and sensorimotor-related areas. This study described a novel method to link BOLD response with simultaneous functional network organization of scalp EEG. These findings suggested the validity of predicting epileptic activity using functional connectivity variation between electrodes. The functional coupling among the thalamus, frontal regions, cerebellum and sensorimotor-related regions may be characteristically involved in epilepsy generation and propagation, which provides new insight into the pathophysiological mechanisms and intervene targets for JME.
