Abstract:The objectives of this study were to describe the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) distribution of Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) veterinary students (n = 1,249), and to evaluate its associations with gender and career interests. This was achieved by collecting pre-matriculation data from 11 graduating classes. Overall, OVC veterinary students were diverse in their MBTI types and preferences, as well as career interests. Extraversion, Sensing, Thinking, and Judging were the most prevalent preferences. Female veterinary students were 2.96 (95% CI = 2.11-4.17) times more likely to demonstrate the Feeling preference and 1.89 (95% CI = 1.41-2.56) more likely to prefer Judging, compared to male students (who were more likely to prefer the Thinking and Perceiving preferences, respectively). At entry to the veterinary program, students who preferred Intuition (vs. Sensing) were 2.08 (95% CI = 1.33-3.33) times more likely to be interested in a veterinary career other than practice, and 1.92 (95% CI = 1.43-2.56) times more likely to be undecided about their future veterinary career path. Both at entry to the program and in their final-year stream choice, students of the Thinking preference were more likely to select equine or food animal, rather than small animal practice, compared to students of the Feeling preference. There were additional significant associations regarding MBTI preferences and career interests. This study highlights the diversity of veterinary students, and provides an opportunity for educators to potentially expand their teaching methods and career guidance resources to better reach students of all MBTI preferences.

Abstract:Personality types are related to trustworthy, reliable, and competent communication, especially when dealing with clients. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether the Myers–Briggs (MBTI) indicator could be used to detect differences in the personality preferences of students at the Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana (VS) compared to students at the Faculty of Criminal Justice and Security, University of Maribor (CJS). Our aim was to profile the two cohorts of students in Slovenia, to compare profiles of students from the social and natural sciences with similar personality traits, and to compare them with published results. CJS are considered well-established, well-studied, non-science ombudsman profiles of students in Slovenia for whom care and safety will play important roles in their future work, similar to VS. Views of people’s duties to animals and the implications for animal care, safety, and welfare are also very important, especially for VS. For this reason, we tested the ethical viewpoints of the two cohorts of students using an interactive web-based program. Our results show that both VS and CJS had different MBTI types, with ISTJ (Introversion, Sensing, Thinking, and Judging) preferences predominating, followed by INFJ (Introverted, Intuitive, Feeling, and Judging) in VS and ESTJ (Extraverted, Observant, Thinking, and Judging) in CJS. Between the two cohorts, the ratio between ISFJ and INFJ was statistically different. In the animal ethics study, the utilitarian viewpoint was most prevalent and statistically higher in VS compared to CJS, where the animal rights perspective was most prevalent. Compared to previous profile studies, some differences were found that could be related to the COVID-19 pandemic and/or the different generations of students. Overall, this study highlights the importance of personality traits for better communication, work, and animal research in veterinary science as well as criminal justice.

Does the admissions committee select medical students in its own image?

Abstract:A previous issue of the Journal referred to a national study of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) in which 12 schools participated. A comparison of our students' type preference with that of their peers at the 11 other schools revealed that only two of the 11 schools demonstrated our strong preference for the combination of sensing, thinking, and judging. We wondered if our Admissions Committee members, too, would demonstrate a preference for the same combination of Myers-Briggs dimensions. In fact, students' trait preferences matched those of Admissions Committee members on all MBTI dichotomies, suggesting that the Committee's own image may have influenced the selection of medical students. A Committee member's awareness and appreciation of his own personality characteristics may be extremely helpful in the admissions process.

Abstract:The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a self-reported personality test that has continued to gain popularity and traction across industries. The MBTI assesses individuals within four dichotomous categories corresponding to ways to, ultimately, assign one of sixteen personality types. Prior studies indicate that physicians trended towards certain personality traits and medical students with a particular trait performed lower academically. Due to the recency of these studies, however, there is a substantial knowledge gap in the relationship between medical student MBTIs and academic performance, demographics, and career interests. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate this relationship amongst 4-year allopathic U.S. medical students and determine if there is substantial correlation to implement MBTI results in creating personalized student support services in school curriculum.

Personality types and performance on aptitude and achievement tests: implications for osteopathic medical education

Abstract:Context: Several studies have shown that the personality types of medical and dental students affect performance on aptitude and achievement examinations. However, such studies are lacking in osteopathic medical literature. Objective: To determine if personality type is associated with performance on aptitude and achievement tests taken by osteopathic medical students. Methods: The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was used to determine the mental-function pairs-sensing-thinking, intuition-thinking, sensing-feeling, or intuition-feeling-of osteopathic medical students at Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove, Ill. Results were analyzed with participants' scores on the Medical College Admissions Test and the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination-USA (COMLEX-USA) Level 1. Results: A total of 295 osteopathic medical students completed the MBTI, but 32 (11%) were excluded because they did not meet the study criteria. Among the remaining 263 participants, no personality types were associated with high or low scores on the Medical College Admissions Test (P=.229). However, participants in the intuition-feeling group had statistically significant lower scores on COMLEX-USA Level 1 (P=.002). Conclusion: The differences in scores obtained on COMLEX-USA Level 1 were statistically significant when students were identified by personality type. This finding suggests that using the MBTI during training could enhance learning and improve academic performance in osteopathic medical schools.

Abstract:ABSTRACT. The influence of labor and route of delivery upon the umbilical cord serum levels of cortisol and prolactin in ninety‐nine preterm infants not exposed prenatally to corticosteroids was studied. Vaginally born infants (group A) presented a higher mean cord cortisol concentration than those delivered by cesarean section (group B); mean prolactin values, however, were not different between both groups. Although there was no difference in cortisol and prolactin levels between infants delivered by cesarean section after spontaneous onset of labor (group B‐I) and those without labor (group B‐II), the mean cortisol concentration was significantly higher in group A than in group B‐I. The mean prolactin levels did not differ among all the studied groups. It is concluded that there is no association between presence of labor or route of delivery and cord seum levels of prolactin, there is no association between spontaneous preterm labor and cord cortisol values and there is an association between vaginal delivery and high cord cortisol levels in preterm infants. It is suggested that the increase in serum cortisol levels does not precede the initiation of preterm parturition but it is secondary to the stress caused by vaginal delivery.
Personality factors as predictors of medical student performance

Abstract:Personality characteristics were studied among a group of candidates chosen to study medicine in a selection process determined in large part by personal interview ratings. These personality characteristics were examined further with regard to their relation to student performance in an interpersonally community-oriented school of medicine. Seven scales taken from the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) were studied in regard to their relationship to interview ratings, cognitive and clinical performance and an overall rating by a team of teaching staff. 'Dominance', 'Self-acceptance', 'Well-being'., 'Tolerance', 'Responsibility' and 'Achievement via conformance' were found to be significantly, albeit modestly, correlated to interview ratings, while 'Achievement via independence' was not. All seven CPI scales, except Responsibility significantly differentiated between contrasted groups on cognitive examination scores and overall teachers' ratings, but not on clinical ratings. Discriminant analyses suggested that 'Achievement via independence', 'Self-acceptance', 'Dominance' and 'Achievement via conformance' were the best overall predictors of congnitive performance and teaching staff ratings. Implications for selection of training of interpersonally, community-oriented professionals in medicine and allied helping fields are discussed.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this pilot study is to examine the association between Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and prospective psychiatry residents. Methods: Forty-six American medical schools were contacted and asked to participate in this study. Data were collected and an aggregated list was compiled that included the following information: date of MBTI administration, academic year, MBTI form/version, residency match information and student demographic information. The data includes 835 American medical students who completed the MBTI survey and matched into a residency training program in the United States. All analyses were performed using R 3.1.2. Results: The probability of an introvert matching to a psychiatry residency is no different than that of an extravert (p= 0.30). The probability of an intuitive individual matching to a psychiatry residency is no different than that of a sensing type (p=0.20). The probability of a feeling type matching to a psychiatry residency is no different than that of a thinking type (p= 0.50). The probability of a perceiving type matching to a psychiatry residency is no different than that of a judging type (p= 0.60). Conclusions: Further analyses may elicit more accurate information regarding the personality profile of prospective psychiatry residents. The improvement in communication, team dynamics, mentor-mentee relationships and reduction in workplace conflicts are possible with the awareness of MBTI personality profiles.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and dental school performance

Abstract:The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was administered to 256 dental students, representing four classes, at the University of Florida College of Dentistry. The results of this psychological instrument were then correlated with overall dental school performance based on results from the National Dental Board Examinations Part I and II (NB-I, NB-II), yearly class rank, and specific academic difficulties as measured by the Student Performance Evaluation Committee. Introverted students were found to display a significantly increased performance on NB-I (p = .038) and NB-II (p = .044). They were also found, however, to demonstrate a progressively lower class rank over the four-year period than extroverted students and were more likely to experience major academic difficulties as well. Judging and sensing individuals were found to earn a higher class rank over the four-year period than perceiving and intuitive students, respectively. Perceiving students were found to exhibit major difficulties or were placed on probation more often than judging individuals. These results may prove useful in counseling students to recognize potential problems before they commence their dental education or to anticipate and address specific weaknesses during the course of their education.

Abstract:Background: The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that personality preference, which can be related to learning style, influences individual utilization of CAI applications developed specifically for the undergraduate medical curriculum. Methods: Personality preferences of students were obtained using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) test. CAI utilization for individual students was collected from entry logs for two different web-based applications (a discussion forum and a tutorial) used in the basic science course on human anatomy. Individual login data were sorted by personality preference and the data statistically analyzed by 2-way mixed ANOVA and correlation. Results: There was a wide discrepancy in the level and pattern of student use of both CAI. Although individual use of both CAI was positively correlated irrespective of MBTI preference, students with a "Sensing" preference tended to use both CAI applications more than the "iNtuitives". Differences in the level of use of these CAI applications (i.e., higher use of discussion forum vs. a tutorial) were also found for the "Perceiving/Judging" dimension. Conclusion: We conclude that personality/learning preferences of individual students influence their use of CAI in the medical curriculum.

Abstract:
The influence of personality type on decision making in the physical therapy admission process

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to identify the personality types of physical therapy (PT) interviewers and applicants, using the Personality Styles (PS) assessment tool, and to determine whether an interview team's personality type influences the rating score given. The PS was validated in a study of 298 students who completed the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Form G and a PS assessment. By chi-square analysis the PS model appears to be a valid representation of the MBTI (chi 2 = 86.62, p < 0.00001). Subjects for the interview portion of the study were 282 student applicants, 19 faculty, and 47 clinicians from two PT programs. A randomly assigned faculty/clinician team interviewed each applicant. Two one-way ANOVAs were performed with interview score as the dependent variable and 1) applicant personality type in relation to faculty/clinician team (same, different from both, like one) and 2) applicant personality type as the independent variables. Internal consistency of the interview rating form was alpha = 0.89. Mean interview score was 33.97/42 (SD 4.59). Interview scores were not significantly different between applicants who interviewed with clinician/faculty teams that were "like" compared with "not like" the applicants (F0.864; p = 0.423), but were significantly different between applicants with different PS personality types (F3.159; p = 0.026). Although personality type of the interview team did not impact the score given, thereby refuting the presence of interviewer bias, the rating scores did vary according to personality type of the applicant, suggesting a possible stereotyping bias in the criteria used to rate applicants.

Abstract:Background: Allopathic medicine faces a daunting challenge of selecting the best applicants because of the very high applicant / matriculant ratio. The quality of graduates ultimately reflects the quality of medical practice. Alarming recent trends in physician burnout, misconduct and suicide raise questions of whether we are selecting the right candidates. The United States (US) lags far behind the United Kingdom (UK) and Europe in the study of non-cognitive tests in medical school admissions. Although more recently, medical schools in both the UK, Europe and the US have begun to use situational judgement tests such as the Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics (CASPer) and the situational judgement test (SJT), recently developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and that these tests are, in a sense non-cognitive in nature, direct personality tests per se have not been utilized. We have historically used, in the admissions process within the US, knowledge, reasoning and exam performance, all of which are largely influenced by intelligence and also improved with practice. Personality, though also undoubtedly influenced by intelligence, is fundamentally different and subject to different kinds of measurements. Methods: A popular personality measurement used over the past two decades within the US in business and industry, but not medical school has been the Neo Personality Inventory - Revised (NEO-PI-R) Test. This test has not been utilized regularly in allopathic medicine probably because of the paucity of exploratory retrospective and validating prospective studies. The hypothesis which we tested was whether NEO-PI-R traits exhibited consistency between two institutions and whether their measurements showed probative value in predicting academic performance. Results: Our retrospective findings indicated both interinstitutional consistencies and both positive and negative predictive values for certain traits whose correlative strengths exceeded traditional premed metrics: medical college admission test (MCAT) scores, grade point average (GPA), etc. for early academic performance. Conclusions: Our exploratory studies should catalyze larger and more detailed confirmatory studies designed to validate the importance of personality traits not only in predicting early medical school performance but also later performance in one's overall medical career.
Myers-Briggs type and medical specialty choice: a new look at an old question

Abstract:Background: Career development of health professionals is one of many uses of Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), with many studies reported from the 1950s. Since 1977, no large-scale effort to collect data on the medical school population has been reported. Purpose: To determine (a) changes in MBTI profiles of medical students over time, (b) differences between the profiles of men and women and the effects of the increased number of women in medical school, (c) possible associations between type and career choices, and (d) possible type differences of graduates selecting primary care and specialties. Method: Twelve U.S. schools with data on 3,987 students contributed to a database of their graduates' MBTI type and specialty choice at Match. Results: Compared with data from the 1950s, the type distribution of physicians has remained fairly stable, save for a trend toward more judging types. Women in medicine today are more representative of the general population on the feeling dimension than earlier, when medicine was more male-dominated. Women are more likely than men to choose primary care specialties, as are those with preference for introversion and feeling. Feeling types choose Family Medicine significantly more often than thinking types; male, extraverted, and thinking types choose surgical specialties. Of those selecting nonprimary care, male, extraverted, and thinking types choose surgical specialties significantly more than women, introverted, and feeling types. Conclusion: Type remains useful for understanding how some aspects of personality relate to medical specialty choice.

Abstract:Background: Well-developed assessment methods have a positive impact on students’ performance, and higher education institutes are usually encouraged to establish and use effective assessment methods that effectively enhance the learning process. Objectives: This study was designed to compare students’ performance in multiple choice questions (MCQs) including best single answer (BSA) and multiple true and false (MTF) types, and very short answer (VSA) questions, and to evaluate gender differences and feedback from students and faculty. Materials and methods: A test containing three different types of questions, BSA, MTF and VSA questions (10 each), was delivered to eight groups of veterinary pathology students (3rd level, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt) in April 2022. Students’ performance, test reliability and gender differences as well as feedback from students and faculty were evaluated. Results: Students did a significant higher performance in BSA and MTF questions compared to VSA questions. The reliability of BSA, MTF and VSA questions between different groups of students were 0.53, 0.52 and 0.13, respectively. Girl students achieved a higher performance in the whole test compared to boy students. Both boy and girl students showed nearly similar performance in BSA and MTF questions. However, girl students got significant higher score in VSA questions compared to boy students. Students’ and faculty opinions were in favor of BSA and MTF questions. Conclusion: Students did much better in MCQs than VSA questions. BSA and MTF questions are preferentially favored by students and faculty.
Using a personality inventory to identify risk of distress and burnout among early stage medical students

Abstract:Background: Distress and burnout are common among medical students and negatively impact students' physical, mental, and emotional health. Personality inventories such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), used in medical education, may have a role in identifying burnout risk early. Methods: The authors conducted a cross-sectional survey study among 185 1st year medical students with the MBTI, the general well-being schedule (GWB), and Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS). Descriptive statistics and one-way MANOVAs were used to identify the prevalence and differences in MBTI preferences and distress/burnout risk. Results: Response rate was 185/185 (100%). Distress (GWB) was reported by 84/185 (45.4%). High scores on exhaustion were reported by 118/182 (64.8%), cynicism by 76/182 (41.8%), and decreased professional efficacy by 38/182 (20.9%) for the three dimensions of the MBI-SS. Only 21/182 (11.5%) of respondents had high scores on all three dimensions of burnout. Students with MBTI preferences for extraversion reported greater positive well-being (P < 0.05), self-control (P < 0.05), professional efficacy (P < 0.01), and lower levels of depression (P < 0.01) compared with those with introversion preference. Discussion: Distress and burnout are prevalent early in medical training. The significant difference between extraversion and introversion in relation to distress and burnout deserves further study. Use of a personality inventory may help identify students at risk of burnout and allow appropriate early stress management.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Many methods have been employed to obtain fetal cells from maternal blood for prenatal diagnostics, but there has been little work done that compares the efficacy of different methods. This study presents a comparison of two commonly used methods for selecting erythroblasts with selection directly from whole blood. METHODS Erythroblasts were isolated from maternal blood by either differential lysis or density separation, followed by selection with an antibody to the transferrin receptor. These methods were compared with antibody selection directly from whole blood. The total yield of erythroblasts was determined for each method. RESULTS Red cell lysis is not recommended because the lysis step cannot be well controlled. Density separation followed by antibody selection works well. However, a faster and simpler method, antibody selection directly from whole blood using Immunicon Ferrofluid and magnetic separators, works as well and has the potential to yield even more cells. CONCLUSIONS Considering the need for a simple and quick method for selecting fetal cells from maternal blood, we suggest selection directly from whole blood.
Relationships between psychological characteristics, academic fit and engagement with academic performance in veterinary medical students

Abstract:Recognition of the factors that influence academic performance in university students constitutes one of the key objectives of education researchers. Few studies have been conducted in this sphere in relation to veterinary students; however, considering the high levels of depression, anxiety symptoms, and decreased life satisfaction revealed in recent literature for this demographic, understanding these factors is of great importance. Moreover, the literature on veterinary education has mostly focused on cognitive factors as antecedents to academic performance, while very little attention has been directed toward personal characteristics.

Abstract:Online personality tests have emerged due to evolving technological advances, with their popularity mainly rooted due to their ease of use and quick results. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI, one of the most popular, has become the new approach to assessing personality. The user will be categorized as one of the 16 personalities described in this test, each with their own set of strengths, weaknesses, and preferences. On the other hand, academic performance is the degree of knowledge of a student and is impacted by various circumstances. Several studies have investigated the relationship between personality types and academic-related events. This became the catalyst for why the researchers aim to achieve a correlative study, utilizing the currently popular MBTI in particular. The researchers seek to determine if this test can be used for anything more than psychological feedback. Notably, the researchers’ objectives not only define the concepts of various personalities present on the test and academic performance but also determine whether there is a connection between these personality types and the student’s academic performance. To conclude, the researchers employed both physical and online surveys. These comprised the adopted 16-personality type questionnaire by Crystal Knows to determine their personality type and a form that sought the first semester grades of core and applied subjects of 294 grade 12 students, the calculated number of participants needed for the study. Following a thorough data collection procedure, the researchers arrived at the following conclusions: 1) There are a variety of MBTI types present among grade 12 students, but they can be classified into four (4) groups: Analysts, Diplomats, Sentinels, and Explorers. 2) The student’s academic performance in school falls into three (3) categories: Category A (90-100), Category A (90-100), Category B (85-89), and Category C (75-84). 3) There are academic groups that excelled, particularly the Analysts and Diplomats group. Lastly, 4) No substantial correlation exists between personality types and students’ academic performance. The study’s implications can help young individuals expand their knowledge through personality tests.
