Abstract:Indoor air quality attracted great attention for its significant threats to human health and safety, especially the potential hazardous gases in kitchens. To meet the requirements of the anti-interference detection of multiple combustible gases, in this paper, a miniaturized electronic nose was developed using MOS sensor array for semi-quantitative and anti-interference detection of carbon monoxide and methane with the interference of hydrogen and formaldehyde. The sensor array was constructed using 6 MOS sensors and cross-reaction to target and interference gases. To implement the anti-interference capability, different models were utilized and evaluated including PCA, LDA and BP-ANN. The 10-fold cross validation results indicate that BP-ANN models have the best performance than other models with the accuracy of 93.35 % for CO and 93.22 % for CH4 without interference. With the interference of H2 and CH2O, the BP-ANN model shows the accuracies of 78.92 % for CO and 89.75 % for CH4. Adding interfering samples of H-2 has a more significant impact on BP-ANN models than adding that of CH2O. The results demonstrate that the proposed e-nose with the BP-ANN model can realize semi-quantitative, simultaneous and anti-interference detection of CO and CH4 in the interference environment, which provides a promising platform for gas sensing with multiple interference.
Characterization of odour emissions in a wastewater treatment plant using a drone-based chemical sensor system

Abstract:Conventionally, odours emitted by different sources present in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are measured by dynamic olfactometry, where a human panel sniffs and analyzes air bags collected from the plant. Although the method is considered the gold standard, the process is costly, slow, and infrequent, which does not allow operators to quickly identify and respond to problems. To better monitor and map WWTP odour emissions, here we propose a small rotary-wing drone equipped with a lightweight (1.3-kg) electronic nose. The "sniffing drone" sucks in air via a ten-meter (33-foot) tube and delivers it to a sensor chamber where it is analyzed in real-time by an array of 21 gas sensors. From the sensor signals, machine learning (ML) algorithms predict the odour concentration that a human panel using the EN13725 methodology would report. To calibrate and validate the predictive models, the drone also carries a remotely controlled sampling device (compliant with EN13725:2022) to collect sample air in bags for post-flight dynamic olfactometry. The feasibility of the proposed system is assessed in a WWTP in Spain through several measurement campaigns covering diverse operating regimes of the plant and meteorological conditions. We demonstrate that training the ML algorithms with dynamic (transient) sensor signals measured in flight conditions leads to better performance than the traditional approach of using steady-state signals measured in the lab via controlled exposures to odour bags. The comparison of the electronic nose predictions with dynamic olfactometry measurements indicates a negligible bias between the two measurement techniques and 95 % limits of agreement within a factor of four. This apparently large disagreement, partly caused by the high uncertainty of olfactometric measurements (typically a factor of two), is more than offset by the immediacy of the predictions and the practical advantages of using a drone-based system.

Abstract:AbstractAs a knowledge representation tool, ontologies have been widely applied in many fields such as knowledge management and information integration, etc. Ontology measurement is an important challenge in the field of knowledge management in order to manage the development of ontology based systems and reduce the risk of project failure. This paper proposes a generic implementation framework for stable semantic ontology measurement. Through this framework, an ontology will be measured according to its semantic enriched representation model (SERM). The SERM model of an ontology can be used for stably measuring the semantics of the ontology. Then ontology metrics are integrated into the framework to measure candidate ontologies according to its SERM model. The related experiments are made to show that the framework can effectively measure the semantics of ontologies.

Abstract:In this work we present a novel multi-sensor unit, a.k.a. FireNose, to detect and discriminate both known and unknown gases in uncontrolled conditions to aid firefighters under harsh conditions. The unit includes three metal oxide (MOX) gas sensors with CMOS micro heaters, a plasmonic enhanced non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) sensor optimized for the detection of CO2, a commercial temperature humidity sensor, and a flow sensor. We developed custom film coatings for the MOX sensors (SnO2, WO3 and NiO) which greatly improved the gas sensitivity, response time and lifetime of the miniature devices. Our proposed system exhibits promising performance for gas sensing in harsh environments, in terms of power consumption (~ 35 mW at 350°C per MOX sensor), response time (< 10 s), robustness and physical size. The sensing unit was evaluated with plumes of gases in both, a laboratory setup on a gas testing rig and on-board a mobile robot operating indoors. These high sensitivity, high-bandwidth sensors, together with online unsupervised gas discrimination algorithms, are able to detect and generate their spatial distribution maps accordingly. In the robotic experiments, the resulting gas distribution maps corresponded well to the actual location of the sources. Therefore, we verified its ability to differentiate gases and generate gas maps in real-world experiments.

Abstract:Measuring gases for environmental monitoring is a demanding task that requires long periods of observation and large numbers of sensors. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) currently represent the best alternative to monitor large, remote, and difficult access areas, as these technologies have the possibility of carrying specialized gas sensing systems. This paper presents the development and integration of a WSN and an UAV powered by solar energy in order to enhance their functionality and broader their applications. A gas sensing system implementing nanostructured metal oxide (MOX) and non-dispersive infrared sensors was developed to measure concentrations of CH4 and CO2. Laboratory, bench and field testing results demonstrate the capability of UAV to capture, analyze and geo-locate a gas sample during flight operations. The field testing integrated ground sensor nodes and the UAV to measure CO2 concentration at ground and low aerial altitudes, simultaneously. Data collected during the mission was transmitted in real time to a central node for analysis and 3D mapping of the target gas. The results highlights the accomplishment of the first flight mission of a solar powered UAV equipped with a CO2 sensing system integrated with a WSN. The system provides an effective 3D monitoring and can be used in a wide range of environmental applications such as agriculture, bushfires, mining studies, zoology and botanical studies using a ubiquitous low cost technology.

Fully Onboard Low-Power Localization with Semantic Sensor Fusion on a Nano-UAV using Floor Plans

Abstract:Nano-sized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are well-fit for indoor applications and for close proximity to humans. To enable autonomy, the nano-UAV must be able to self-localize in its operating environment. This is a particularly-challenging task due to the limited sensing and compute resources on board. This work presents an online and onboard approach for localization in floor plans annotated with semantic information. Unlike sensor-based maps, floor plans are readily-available, and do not increase the cost and time of deployment. To overcome the difficulty of localizing in sparse maps, the proposed approach fuses geometric information from miniaturized time-of-flight sensors and semantic cues. The semantic information is extracted from images by deploying a state-of-the-art object detection model on a high-performance multi-core microcontroller onboard the drone, consuming only 2.5mJ per frame and executing in 38ms. In our evaluation, we globally localize in a real-world office environment, achieving 90% success rate. We also release an open-source implementation of our work.

Abstract:Autonomously navigating robots need to perceive and interpret their surroundings. Currently, cameras are among the most used sensors due to their high resolution and frame rates at relatively low energy consumption and cost. In recent years, cutting-edge sensors, such as miniaturized depth cameras, have demonstrated strong potential, specifically for nano-size unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where low power consumption, lightweight hardware, and low computational demand are essential. However, cameras are limited to working under good lighting conditions, while depth cameras have a limited range. To maximize robustness, we propose to fuse a millimeter form factor 64 pixel depth sensor and a low-resolution grayscale camera. In this work, a nano-UAV learns to detect and fly through a gate with a lightweight autonomous navigation system based on two tinyML convolutional neural network models trained in simulation, running entirely onboard in 7.6 ms and with an accuracy above 91%. Field tests are based on the Crazyflie 2.1, featuring a total mass of 39 g. We demonstrate the robustness and potential of our navigation policy in multiple application scenarios, with a failure probability down to 1.2 ˙ 10-3 crash/meter, experiencing only two crashes on a cumulative flight distance of 1.7 km.

Sniffy Bug: A Fully Autonomous Swarm of Gas-Seeking Nano Quadcopters in Cluttered Environments

Abstract:Nano quadcopters are ideal for gas source localization (GSL) as they are safe, agile and inexpensive. However, their extremely restricted sensors and computational resources make GSL a daunting challenge. In this work, we propose a novel bug algorithm named `Sniffy Bug', which allows a fully autonomous swarm of gas-seeking nano quadcopters to localize a gas source in an unknown, cluttered and GPS-denied environments. The computationally efficient, mapless algorithm foresees in the avoidance of obstacles and other swarm members, while pursuing desired waypoints. The waypoints are first set for exploration, and, when a single swarm member has sensed the gas, by a particle swarm optimization-based procedure. We evolve all the parameters of the bug (and PSO) algorithm, using our novel simulation pipeline, `AutoGDM'. It builds on and expands open source tools in order to enable fully automated end-to-end environment generation and gas dispersion modeling, allowing for learning in simulation. Flight tests show that Sniffy Bug with evolved parameters outperforms manually selected parameters in cluttered, real-world environments.

A mini broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectrometer for nitrogen dioxide measurement on the unmanned aerial vehicle platform

Abstract:We developed a small size and light weight analyzer based on the broadband cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy for measuring nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) with high spatial-temporal resolution and high accuracy. The instrument utilizes a LED centered at 450 nm, a short optical cavity, and a spectrometer to determine the extinction coefficients span 435–465 nm, allowing us to retrieve the mixing ratio of NO 2 by absorption cross-section. The measurement precision (1σ) for NO 2 is 98 ppt in 2 s under laboratory conditions. The uncertainty is estimated at 6% mainly attributed to cross-section and the mirror reflectivity. Good consistency was achieved by comparing with commercial chemiluminescence detector and cavity attenuation phase shift spectrometer (CAPS) (both R 2 = 0.99). We further mounted the instrument on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and maintained the UAV flight at the height of 20 m, the comparative measurement with a CAPS set in a neighbor building with the same sampling height showed a good correlation (R 2 = 0.97), which confirmed the instrumental feasibility and stability on the UAV platform. At last, we present a successful NO 2 vertical measurement test, the good performance indicates this portable technique has great potential for vertical measurement. In particular, the mini-CEAS technique can further extend to measure the vertical profiles of other trace gas species (such as nitrous acid) with strong optical structural absorptions, which would largely promote the understanding of atmospheric chemistry on a vertical scale.

Abstract:The safety of the gas transmission infrastructure is one of the main concerns for infrastructure operating companies. Common gas pipelines’ tightness control is tedious and time-consuming. The development of new methods is highly desirable. This paper focuses on the applications of air-borne methods for inspections of the natural gas pipelines. The main goal of this study is to test an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), equipped with a remote sensing methane detector, for natural gas leak detection from the pipeline network. Many studies of the use of the UAV with laser detectors have been presented in the literature. These studies include experiments mainly on the artificial methane sources simulating gas leaks. This study concerns the experiments on a real leakage of natural gas from a pipeline. The vehicle at first monitored the artificial source of methane to determine conditions for further experiments. Then the experiments on the selected section of the natural gas pipelines were conducted. The measurement data, along with spatial coordinates, were collected and analyzed using machine learning methods. The analysis enabled the identification of groups of spatially correlated regions which have increased methane concentrations. Investigations on the flight altitude influence on the accuracy of measurements were also carried out. A range of between 4 m and 15 m was depicted as optimal for data collection in the natural gas pipeline inspections. However, the results from the field experiments showed that areas with increased methane concentrations are significantly more difficult to identify, though they are still noticeable. The experiments also indicate that the lower altitudes of the UAV flights should be chosen. The results showed that UAV monitoring can be used as a tool for the preliminary selection of potentially untight gas pipeline sections.

Abstract:This paper reports on a compact and lightweight sensor for analysis of gases/vapors by means of a MEMS-based pre-concentrator coupled to a miniaturized infrared absorption spectroscopy (IRAS) module. The pre-concentrator was utilized to sample and trap vapors in a MEMS cartridge filled with sorbent material and to release them once concentrated by fast thermal desorption. It was also equipped with a photoionization detector for in-line detection and monitoring of the sampled concentration. The vapors released by the MEMS pre-concentrator are injected into a hollow fiber, which acts as the analysis cell of the IRAS module. The miniaturized internal volume of the hollow fiber of about 20 microliters keeps the vapors concentrated for analysis, thus allowing measurement of their infrared absorption spectrum with a signal to noise ratio high enough to identify the molecule, despite the short optical path, starting from sampled concentration in air down to parts per million. Results obtained for ammonia, sulfur hexafluoride, ethanol and isopropanol are reported to illustrate the sensor detection and identification capability. A limit of identification (LoI) of about 10 parts per million was validated in the lab for ammonia. The lightweight and low power consumption design of the sensor allowed operation onboard unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The first prototype was developed within the EU Horizon 2020 project ROCSAFE for the remote assessment and forensic examination of a scene in the aftermath of industrial or terroristic accidents.

Towards Gas Discrimination and Mapping in Emergency Response Scenarios Using a Mobile Robot with an Electronic Nose

Abstract:Emergency personnel, such as firefighters, bomb technicians, and urban search and rescue specialists, can be exposed to a variety of extreme hazards during the response to natural and human-made disasters. In many of these scenarios, a risk factor is the presence of hazardous airborne chemicals. The recent and rapid advances in robotics and sensor technologies allow emergency responders to deal with such hazards from relatively safe distances. Mobile robots with gas-sensing capabilities allow to convey useful information such as the possible source positions of different chemicals in the emergency area. However, common gas sampling procedures for laboratory use are not applicable due to the complexity of the environment and the need for fast deployment and analysis. In addition, conventional gas identification approaches, based on supervised learning, cannot handle situations when the number and identities of the present chemicals are unknown. For the purpose of emergency response, all the information concluded from the gas detection events during the robot exploration should be delivered in real time. To address these challenges, we developed an online gas-sensing system using an electronic nose. Our system can automatically perform unsupervised learning and update the discrimination model as the robot is exploring a given environment. The online gas discrimination results are further integrated with geometrical information to derive a multi-compound gas spatial distribution map. The proposed system is deployed on a robot built to operate in harsh environments for supporting fire brigades, and is validated in several different real-world experiments of discriminating and mapping multiple chemical compounds in an indoor open environment. Our results show that the proposed system achieves high accuracy in gas discrimination in an online, unsupervised, and computationally efficient manner. The subsequently created gas distribution maps accurately indicate the presence of different chemicals in the environment, which is of practical significance for emergency response.
Electroantennography-based Bio-hybrid Odor-detecting Drone using Silkmoth Antennae for Odor Source Localization

Abstract:Small drones with chemical or biosensor devices that can detect airborne odorant molecules have attracted considerable attention owing to their applicability in environmental and security monitoring and search-and-rescue operations. Small drones with commercial metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOX) gas sensors have been developed for odor source localization; however, their real-time-odor-detection performance has proven inadequate. However, biosensing technologies based on insect olfactory systems exhibit relatively high sensitivity, selectivity, and real-time response with respect to odorant molecules compared to commercial MOX gas sensors. In such devices, excised insect antennae function as portable odorant biosensor elements and have been found to deliver excellent sensing performance. This study presents experimental protocols for odorant-molecule detection in the air using a small autonomous bio-hybrid drone based on a mountable electroantennography (EAG) device incorporating silkmoth antennae. We developed a mountable EAG device including sensing/processing parts with a Wi-Fi module. The device was equipped with a simple sensor enclosure to enhance the sensor directivity. Thus, odor source localization was conducted using the spiral-surge algorithm, which does not assume an upwind direction. The experimental bio-hybrid odor-detecting drone identified real-time odorant-concentration differences in a pseudo-open environment (outside a wind tunnel) and localized the source. The developed drone and associated system can serve as an efficient odorant molecule-detection tool and a suitable flight platform for developing odor source localization algorithms owing to its high programmability.

Abstract:The technological advancements in sensory systems and robotics over the past decade have facilitated the innovation of centralized systems for optimizing resource utilization and monitoring efficiency in inspection applications. This paper presents a novel system designed for gas concentration sensing in environments by implementing a modular artificial nose (emulating the inhalation and exhalation process) equipped with a strategically designed air capture centralization system based on computational fluid dynamics analysis (CFD). The system incorporates three gas identification sensors distributed within the artificial nose, and their information is processed in real-time through embedded systems. The artificial nose is hardware–software integrated with a quadruped robot capable of traversing the environment to collect samples, maximizing coverage area through its mobility and locomotion capabilities. This integration provides a comprehensive perspective on gas distribution in a specific area, enabling the efficient detection of substances in the surrounding environment. The robotic platform employs a graphical interface for real-time gas concentration data map visualization. System integration is achieved using the Robot Operating System (ROS), leveraging its modularity and flexibility advantages. This innovative robotic approach offers a promising solution for enhanced environmental inspection and monitoring applications.

Active Localization of Gas Leaks Using Fluid Simulation

Abstract:Sensors are routinely mounted on robots to acquire various forms of measurements in spatiotemporal fields. Locating features within these fields and reconstruction (mapping) of the dense fields can be challenging in resource-constrained situations, such as when trying to locate the source of a gas leak from a small number of measurements. In such cases, a model of the underlying complex dynamics can be exploited to discover informative paths within the field. We use a fluid simulator as a model to guide inference for the location of a gas leak. We perform localization via minimization of the discrepancy between observed measurements and gas concentrations predicted by the simulator. Our method is able to account for dynamically varying parameters of wind flow (e.g., direction and strength) and its effects on the observed distribution of gas. We develop algorithms for offline inference as well as for online path discovery via active sensing. We demonstrate the efficiency, accuracy, and versatility of our algorithm using experiments with a physical robot conducted in outdoor environments. We deploy an unmanned air vehicle mounted with a CO$_2$ sensor to automatically seek out a gas cylinder emitting CO$_2$ via a nozzle. We evaluate the accuracy of our algorithm by measuring the error in the inferred location of the nozzle, based on which we show that our proposed approach is competitive with respect to state-of-the-art baselines.

SniffySquad: Patchiness-Aware Gas Source Localization with Multi-Robot Collaboration

Abstract:Gas source localization is pivotal for the rapid mitigation of gas leakage disasters, where mobile robots emerge as a promising solution. However, existing methods predominantly schedule robots' movements based on reactive stimuli or simplified gas plume models. These approaches typically excel in idealized, simulated environments but fall short in real-world gas environments characterized by their patchy distribution. In this work, we introduce SniffySquad, a multi-robot olfaction-based system designed to address the inherent patchiness in gas source localization. SniffySquad incorporates a patchiness-aware active sensing approach that enhances the quality of data collection and estimation. Moreover, it features an innovative collaborative role adaptation strategy to boost the efficiency of source-seeking endeavors. Extensive evaluations demonstrate that our system achieves an increase in the success rate by $20\%+$ and an improvement in path efficiency by $30\%+$, outperforming state-of-the-art gas source localization solutions.

Abstract:The problem of gas detection is relevant to many real-world applications, such as leak detection in industrial settings and landfill monitoring. Using mobile robots for gas detection has several advantages and can reduce danger for humans. In our work, we address the problem of planning a path for a mobile robotic platform equipped with a remote gas sensor, which minimizes the time to detect all gas sources in a given environment. We cast this problem as a coverage planning problem by defining a basic sensing operation -- a scan with the remote gas sensor -- as the field of "view" of the sensor. Given the computing effort required by previously proposed offline approaches, in this paper we suggest a online coverage algorithm, called Next-Best-Smell, adapted from the Next-Best-View class of exploration algorithms. Our algorithm evaluates candidate locations with a global utility function, which combines utility values for travel distance, information gain, and sensing time, using Multi-Criteria Decision Making. In our experiments, conducted both in simulation and with a real robot, we found the performance of the Next-Best-Smell approach to be comparable with that of the state-of-the-art offline algorithm, at much lower computational cost.

Abstract:The visualization of the spatial distributions of gases from various sources is essential to understanding the composition, localization, and behavior of these gases. In this study, an inkjet-printed localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) subpixel gas sensor array was developed to visualize the spatial distributions of gases and to differentiate between acetic acid, geraniol, pentadecane, and cis-jasmone. The sensor array, which integrates gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and fluorescent pigments, was positioned 3 cm above the gas source. Hyperspectral imaging was used to capture the LSPR spectra across the sensor array, and these spectra were then used to construct gas information matrices. Principal component analysis (PCA) enabled effective classification of the gases and localization of their sources based on observed spectral differences. Heat maps that visualized the gas concentrations were generated using the mean squared error (MSE) between the sensor responses and reference spectra. The array identified and visualized the four gas sources successfully, thus demonstrating its potential for gas localization and detection applications. The study highlights a straightforward, cost-effective approach to gas sensing and visualization, and in future work, we intend to refine the sensor fabrication process and enhance the detection of complex gas mixtures.

Abstract:Locating the odor source in an outdoor building environment using autonomous vehicles poses a considerable challenge. To address these challenges, researchers have explored the employment of a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for odor source localization (OSL). UAVs provide mobility and adaptability, making them a perfect tool for reaching remote or hazardous areas. However, optimizing the flight paths of a fleet of UAVs to efficiently explore and locate odor sources in dynamic outdoor environments is a complex problem. In this study, a novel distributed cooperative control framework was proposed to track and effectively explore the odor source. The framework comprises of two layers: the fleet layer and the control layer. The UAVs in the fleet layer cooperate with one another to share information and set waypoints through the concept of particle swarm optimization (PSO). The waypoints generated in the fleet layer serve as guidance for the UAVs in the control layer, where the perturbation-based extremum seeking control (ESC) is employed to navigate the UAVs towards the odor source. The proposed framework was proved to be stable and ensures steady convergence to the optimum position. Additionally, in order to create a very realistic outdoor environment and utilize a fleet of UAVs for 3-D OSL, the GADEN simulator was integrated with the ROS-Gazebo system to build a simulation platform called Gazebo-GADEN. The performance of the proposed framework was evaluated by comparing it with two benchmark approaches, perturbation-based extremum ESC and standard PSO. On the one hand, the two benchmark approaches may struggle to adapt to the dynamic and uncertain nature of outdoor environments. On the other hand, the proposed framework approach demonstrates remarkable adaptability to the dynamic environment and outperforms the two benchmark approaches in terms of searching time and success rate.

Abstract:Addressing the aging infrastructure challenge in both civil and industrial sectors has spurred the development of advanced sensor technologies and novel inspection methodologies, significantly contributing to the field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). While conventional sensors, such as structure-mounted accelerometers, have demonstrated high effectiveness, their deployment may be difficult or even impossible in high-risk environments like post-seismic areas, where the installation procedure hampers the operators' safety. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the characteristics of a novel sensing platform compatible with autonomous deployment for vibration inspection of infrastructures. In particular, we explore the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), with a specific focus on nano-drones, as a viable and promising solution due to their compact size and cost-effectiveness. In particular, Crazyflie 2.1 nano-drones are exploited as reference platforms, given their characteristics in terms of versatility and electrical parameters. The objective is to utilize the on-drone MEMS-based Inertial Measurement and Microcontroller Unit (IMU and MCU) to perform, at the same time, both flight control and navigation, and vibration inspection. This approach eliminates the need for additional hardware, going beyond other successful drone applications in SHM, such as visual inspections, sensors deployment, and distance measurements. The proposed solution is validated through a comparison with commercial sensors for SHM. Multiple drones can be combined to deploy wireless sensor networks in hard-to-reach locations, ready for vibration monitoring with minimal software adjustments, offering a novel approach to SHM. The results indicate that the Crazyflie drone is capable of detecting even small variations in the dynamic response of a beam, with a maximum deviation of 1% compared to commercially available counterparts designed for SHM purposes.
