Abstract:Prostate cancer is one of the most common malignancies in males, and tumor progression critically determines its clinical significance. Prostatic stromal cells may be critically involved in growth and progression of prostate cancer. There is substantial evidence that the stromal component of the embryological tissue of origin, the urogenital sinus, is essential in directing outgrowth and prostatic differentiation of the epithelial anlage of the prostate. The presence of a stromal androgen receptor is required for this effect, and humoral factors, such as keratinocyte growth factor, have been shown to be able to mediate it in a paracrine fashion. The adult prostate is also under control of multiple steroid hormone and paracrine peptide factors, and there is evidence that the prostatic stroma plays a major role in mediation of androgen effects on prostatic epithelium. Normal seminal vesicle mesenchyme can cause differentiation of the Dunning R3327H prostate carcinoma. Normal rat prostatic fibroblasts influence the in vivo and soft agar growth of epithelial cells derived from chemically/hormonally induced rat prostate carcinomas, as do fibroblasts that are isolated from these tumors. Both growth-enhancing and growth-inhibiting effects were observed, apparently depending on the stage of progression of both cell types as well as on whether fibroblasts were derived from the same or a different tumor than the epithelial cells. These findings indicate that stromal cells critically influence epithelial prostate cancer growth, and they suggest that these effects can significantly vary in different tumors as well as in different stages of tumor progression.

Abstract:In molecular systems, the ultrafast motion of electrons initiates the process of chemical change. Tracking this electronic motion across molecules requires coupling attosecond time resolution to atomic-scale spatial sensitivity. In this work, we employ a pair of attosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser to follow electron motion resulting from the sudden removal of an electron from a prototypical aromatic system, para-aminophenol. X-ray absorption enables tracking this motion with atomic-site specificity. Our measurements are compared with state-of-the-art computational modeling, reproducing the observed response across multiple timescales. Sub-femtosecond dynamics are assigned to states undergoing non-radiative decay, while few-femtosecond oscillatory motion is associated with electronic wavepacket motion in stable cation states, that will eventually couple to nuclear motion. Our work provides insight on the ultrafast charge motion preceding and initiating chemical transformations in moderately complex systems, and provides a powerful benchmark for computational models of ultrafast charge motion in matter.

Abstract:Recent developments in nonadiabatic dynamics enabled ab inito simulations of complex ultrafast processes in the condensed phase. These advances have opened new avenues in the study of many photophysical and photochemical reactions triggered by the absorption of electromagnetic radiation. In particular, theoretical investigations can be combined with the most sophisticated femtosecond experimental techniques to guide the interpretation of measured time-resolved observables. At the same time, the availability of experimental data at high (spatial and time) resolution offers a unique opportunity for the benchmarking and the improvement of those theoretical models used to describe complex molecular systems in their natural environment. The established synergy between theory and experiments can produce a better understanding of new ultrafast physical and chemical processes at atomistic scale resolution. Furthermore, reliable ab inito molecular dynamics simulations can already be successfully employed as predictive tools to guide new experiments as well as the design of novel and better performing materials. In this paper, I will give a concise account on the state of the art of molecular dynamics simulations of complex molecular systems in their excited states. The principal aim of this approach is the description of a given system of interest under the most realistic ambient conditions including all environmental effects that influence experiments, for instance, the interaction with the solvent and with external time-dependent electric fields, temperature, and pressure. To this end, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) is among the most efficient and accurate methods for the representation of the electronic dynamics, while trajectory surface hopping gives a valuable representation of the nuclear quantum dynamics in the excited states (including nonadiabatic effects). Concerning the environment and its effects on the dynamics, the quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach has the advantage of providing an atomistic (even though approximated) description of the solvent molecules, which is crucial for the characterization of all ultrafast relaxation phenomena that depend on the geometrical arrangement at the interface between a molecule and the solvent, for example, the hydrogen bond network. After a short description of the TDDFT-based implementation of Ehrenfest and trajectory surface hopping dynamics, I will present applications in different domains of molecular chemistry and physics: the analysis and the understanding of (time-resolved) X-ray absorption spectra, the interpretation of the ultrafast relaxation dynamics of photoexcited dyes in solution, and the design of specific laser pulses (capable of inducing desired chemical reactions) using local control theory.

Abstract:Real-time time-dependent density functional theory, in conjunction with the Ehrenfest molecular dynamics scheme, is becoming a popular methodology to investigate ultrafast phenomena on the nanoscale. Thanks to recent developments, it is also possible to explicitly include in the simulations a time-dependent laser pulse, thereby accessing the transient excitation regime. However, the complexity entailed in these calculations calls for in-depth analysis of the accessible and yet approximate (either "dressed" or "bare") quantities in order to evaluate their ability to provide us with a realistic picture of the simulated processes. In this work, we analyze the ultrafast dynamics of three small molecules (ethylene, benzene, and thiophene) excited by a resonant laser pulse in the framework of the adiabatic local-density approximation. The electronic response to the laser perturbation in terms of induced dipole moment and excited-state population is compared to the results given by an exactly solvable two-level model. In this way, we can interpret the charge-carrier dynamics in terms of simple estimators, such as the number of excited electrons. From the computed transient absorption spectra, we unravel the appearance of nonlinear effects such as excited-state absorption and vibronic coupling. In this way, we observe that the laser excitation affects the vibrational spectrum by enhancing the anharmonicities therein, while the coherent vibrational motion contributes to stabilizing the electronic excitation already within a few tens of femtoseconds.

Abstract:Coherent light pulses of few to hundreds of femtoseconds (fs) duration have prolifically served the field of ultrafast phenomena. While fs pulses address mainly dynamics of nuclear motion in molecules or lattices in the gas, liquid or condensed matter phase, the advent of attosecond pulses has in recent years provided direct experimental access to ultrafast electron dynamics. However, there are processes involving nuclear motion in molecules and in particular coupled electronic and nuclear motion that possess few fs or even sub-fs dynamics. In the present work we have succeeded in addressing simultaneously vibrational and electronic dynamics in molecular Hydrogen. Utilizing a broadband extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) continuum the entire, Frank-Condon allowed spectrum of H2 is coherently excited. Vibrational, electronic and ionization 1fs scale dynamics are subsequently tracked by means of XUV-pump-XUV-probe measurements. These reflect the intrinsic molecular behavior as the XUV probe pulse hardly distorts the molecular potential.

Abstract:Nonadiabatic dynamics simulations complement time-resolved experiments by revealing ultrafast excited-states mechanistic information in photochemical reactions. Understanding the relaxation mechanisms of photo-excited molecules finds application in energy, material, and medicinal research. However, with substantial computational costs, the nonadiabatic dynamics simulations have been restricted to ultrafast timescales, typically less than a few picoseconds, thus neglecting a wide range of photoactivated processes occurring in much longer timescales. Before developing new methodologies, we must ask: How well do the popular nonadiabatic dynamics methods perform in a long timescale simulation? In this study, we employ the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) and its multilayer variants (ML-MCTDH), ab initio multiple spawning (AIMS), and fewest- switches surface hopping (FSSH) methodologies to simulate the excited-states dynamics of a weakly- coupled multidimensional Spin-Boson model Hamiltonian designed for a long timescale decay behavior. Our study assures that despite having very different theoretical backgrounds, all the above methods deliver qualitatively similar results. While quantum dynamics would be very costly for long timescale simulations, the trajectory-based approaches are paving the way for future advancements.

Abstract:The capability of generating two intense, femtosecond x-ray pulses with controlled time delay opens the possibility of performing time-resolved experiments for x-ray induced phenomena. We have applied this capability to study the photoinduced dynamics in diatomic molecules. In molecules composed of low-Z elements, \textit{K}-shell ionization creates a core-hole state in which the main decay mode is an Auger process involving two electrons in the valence shell. After Auger decay, the nuclear wavepackets of the transient two-valence-hole states continue evolving on the femtosecond timescale, leading either to separated atomic ions or long-lived quasi-bound states. By using an x-ray pump and an x-ray probe pulse tuned above the \textit{K}-shell ionization threshold of the nitrogen molecule, we are able to observe ion dissociation in progress by measuring the time-dependent kinetic energy releases of different breakup channels. We simulated the measurements on N$_2$ with a molecular dynamics model that accounts for \textit{K}-shell ionization, Auger decay, and the time evolution of the nuclear wavepackets. In addition to explaining the time-dependent feature in the measured kinetic energy release distributions from the dissociative states, the simulation also reveals the contributions of quasi-bound states.

Abstract:Pump-probe measurements aim to capture the motion of electrons and nuclei on their natural timescales (femtoseconds to attoseconds) as chemical and physical transformations take place, effectively making “molecular movies” with short light pulses. However, the quantum dynamics of interest are filtered by the coordinate-dependent matrix elements of the chosen experimental observable. Thus, it is only through a combination of experimental measurements and theoretical calculations that one can gain insight into the internal dynamics. Here, we report on a combination of structural (relativistic ultrafast electron diffraction, or UED) and spectroscopic (time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, or TRPES) measurements to follow the coupled electronic and nuclear dynamics involved in the internal conversion and photodissociation of the polyatomic molecule, diiodomethane (CH_{2}I_{2}). While UED directly probes the 3D nuclear dynamics, TRPES only serves as an indirect probe of nuclear dynamics via Franck-Condon factors, but it is sensitive to electronic energies and configurations, via Koopmans’ correlations and photoelectron angular distributions. These two measurements are interpreted with trajectory surface hopping calculations, which are capable of simulating the observables for both measurements from the same dynamics calculations. The measurements highlight the nonlocal dynamics captured by different groups of trajectories in the calculations. For the first time, both UED and TRPES are combined with theory capable of calculating the observables in both cases, yielding a direct view of the structural and nonadiabatic dynamics involved.

Abstract:Attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy is a recent addition to the experimental tool set of attosecond science. This all-optical method measures different observables than the previously existing techniques based on electron and ion detection and overcomes several of their limitations. We review the present state-of-the-art of attosecond transient absorption experiments and theory. Applications cover the exploration of ultrafast electron dynamics in atoms as well as in solid-state systems. As an example we discuss the observation of transiently bound electron wavepacket dynamics in helium in more detail. This example illustrates how transient absorption spectroscopy can provide information that is fundamentally inaccessible to the techniques based on ionisation, namely dynamics occurring well below the ionisation threshold. Furthermore, we show that a model based on wavepacket interference and originally developed to explain modulations in the ion yield is not sufficient to explain the observed optical response of the system. The optical response on extremely short timescales and in systems exposed to strong laser fields is still not fully understood. This makes the method also attractive for fundamental studies. Furthermore, it is expected that the technique will also find future applications for studying molecular systems in gas phase, in solution, or as solids and will greatly benefit from the advances of ultrafast lasers with multi-100-W average power improving signal-to-noise ratio by many orders of magnitude in the near future.

Abstract:Strong field photoemission and electron recollision provide a viable route to extract electronic and nuclear dynamics from molecular targets with attosecond temporal resolution. However, since an {\em ab-initio} treatment of even the simplest diatomic systems is beyond today's capabilities approximate qualitative descriptions are warranted. In this paper, we develop such a theoretical approach to model the photoelectrons resulting from intense laser-molecule interaction. We present a general theory for symmetric diatomic molecules in the single active electron approximation that, amongst other capabilities, allows adjusting both the internuclear separation and molecular potential in a direct and simple way. More importantly we derive an analytic approximate solution of the time dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE), based on a generalized strong field approximation (SFA) version. Using that approach we obtain expressions for electrons emitted transition amplitudes from two different molecular centres, and accelerated then in the strong laser field. One innovative aspect of our theory is the fact that the dipole matrix elements are free from non-physical gauge and coordinate system dependent terms -- this is achieved by adapting the coordinate system, in which SFA is performed, to the centre from which the corresponding part of the time dependent wave function originates. Our analytic results agree very well with the numerical solution of the full three-dimensional TDSE for the H$_2^+$ molecule. Moreover, the theoretical model was applied to describe laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) measurements of O$_2^+$ molecules, obtained at ICFO, and reproduces the main features of the experiment very well. Our approach can be extended in a natural way to more complex molecules and multi-electron systems.

Abstract:We theoretically study how time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy can be applied for imaging coherent electron dynamics in molecules. We consider a process in which a pump pulse triggers coherent electronic dynamics in a molecule by creating a valence electron hole. An ultrashort extreme ultraviolet probe pulse creates a second electron hole in the molecule. Information about the electron dynamics is accessed by analyzing angular distributions of photoemission probabilities at a fixed photoelectron energy. We demonstrate that a rigorous theoretical analysis, which takes into account the indistinguishability of transitions induced by the ultrashort, broadband probe pulse and electron hole correlation effects, is necessary for the interpretation of time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectra. We show how a Fourier analysis of time- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectra from a molecule can be applied to follow its electron dynamics by considering photoelectron distributions from an indole molecular cation with coherent electron dynamics.

Abstract:We investigate how short and long electron trajectory contributions to high harmonic emission and their interferences give access to intra-molecular dynamics. In the case of unaligned molecules, we show experimental evidences that the long trajectory signature is more dependent upon the molecule than the short one, providing a high sensitivity to cation nuclear dynamics within 100's of as to few fs. Using theoretical approaches based on Strong Field Approximation and Time Dependent Schrodinger Equation, we examine how quantum path interferences encode electronic motion whilst molecules are aligned. We show that the interferences are dependent on channels superposition and upon which ionisation channel is involved. In particular, quantum path interferences encodes electronic migration signature while coupling between channels is allowed by the laser field. Hence, molecular quantum path interferences is a promising method for Attosecond Spectroscopy, allowing the resolution of ultra-fast charge migration in molecules after ionisation in a self-referenced manner.

Abstract:The photoelectric effect is not truly instantaneous, but exhibits attosecond delays that can reveal complex molecular dynamics. Sub-femtosecond duration light pulses provide the requisite tools to resolve the dynamics of photoionization. Accordingly, the past decade has produced a large volume of work on photoionization delays following single photon absorption of an extreme ultraviolet (XUV) photon. However, the measurement of time-resolved core-level photoionization remained out of reach. The required x-ray photon energies needed for core-level photoionization were not available with attosecond tabletop sources. We have now measured the x-ray photoemission delay of core-level electrons, and here report unexpectedly large delays, ranging up to 700 attoseconds in NO near the oxygen K-shell threshold. These measurements exploit attosecond soft x-ray pulses from a free-electron laser (XFEL) to scan across the entire region near the K-shell threshold. Furthermore, we find the delay spectrum is richly modulated, suggesting several contributions including transient trapping of the photoelectron due to shape resonances, collisions with the Auger-Meitner electron that is emitted in the rapid non-radiative relaxation of the molecule, and multi-electron scattering effects. The results demonstrate how x-ray attosecond experiments, supported by comprehensive theoretical modelling, can unravel the complex correlated dynamics of core-level photoionization.

Abstract:Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) has the potential to capture changes in the structure of isolated molecules on the natural spatial and temporal scale of chemical reactions, that is, sub-Angstrom changes in the atomic positions that happen on femtosecond time scales. UED has the advantage that electron sources can easily reach sub-Angstrom spatial resolution, but so far femtosecond resolution had not been available for gas phase experiments due to the challenges in delivering short enough electron pulses on a gas target and the velocity mismatch between laser and electron pulses. Recently, we have used relativistic electron pulses at MeV energy to solve these challenges and reach femtosecond resolution. We have, for the first time, imaged coherent nuclear motion in a molecule with UED. In a proof-of-principle experiment, we captured the motion of a laser-excited vibrational wavepacket in iodine molecules. We are currently performing experiments in more complex molecules to capture laser-induced dissociation and conformational changes. We have also developed a table top 100 keV source that relies on a pulse compressor to deliver femtosecond electron pulses on a target and uses a tilted laser pulse to compensate for the velocity mismatch between the laser and the electrons. This source has a high repetition rate that will complement the high temporal resolution of the relativistic source.
Non-adiabatic electronic relaxation of tetracene from its brightest singlet excited state

Abstract:The ultrafast relaxation dynamics of tetracene following UV excitation to a bright singlet state S6 has been studied with time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. With the help of high-level ab-initio multireference perturbation theory calculations, we assign photoelectron signals to intermediate dark electronic states S3, S4 and S5 as well as a to a low-lying electronic state S2. The energetic structure of these dark states has not been determined experimentally previously. The time-dependent photoelectron yields assigned to the states S6, S5 and S4 have been analyzed and reveal the depopulation of S6 within 50 fs, while S5 and S4 are populated with delays of about 50 and 80 fs. The dynamics of the lower-lying states S3 and S2 seem to agree with a delayed population coinciding with the depopulation of the higher-lying states S4-S6, but could not be elucidated in full detail due to the low signal levels of the corresponding two-photon ionization probe processes.

Ultrafast Adsorbate Excitation Probed with Subpicosecond-Resolution X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Abstract:We use a pump-probe scheme to measure the time evolution of the C K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum from CO/Ru(0001) after excitation by an ultrashort high-intensity optical laser pulse. Because of the short duration of the x-ray probe pulse and precise control of the pulse delay, the excitation-induced dynamics during the first picosecond after the pump can be resolved with unprecedented time resolution. By comparing with density functional theory spectrum calculations, we find high excitation of the internal stretch and frustrated rotation modes occurring within 200 fs of laser excitation, as well as thermalization of the system in the picosecond regime. The ∼100 fs initial excitation of these CO vibrational modes is not readily rationalized by traditional theories of nonadiabatic coupling of adsorbates to metal surfaces, e.g., electronic frictions based on first order electron-phonon coupling or transient population of adsorbate resonances. We suggest that coupling of the adsorbate to nonthermalized electron-hole pairs is responsible for the ultrafast initial excitation of the modes.

Abstract:The atomistic resolution recently achieved by ultrafast spectroscopies demands corresponding theoretical advances. Real-time time-dependent density-functional theory (RT-TDDFT) with Ehrenfest dynamics offers an optimal trade-off between accuracy and computational costs to study electronic and vibrational dynamics of laser-excited materials in the sub-picosecond regime. However, this approach is unable to account for thermal effects or zero-point energies which are crucial in the physics involved. Herein, we adopt a quantum-semiclassical method based on RT-TDDFT+Ehrenfest to simulate laser-induced electronic and vibrational coherences in condensed matter. With the example of carbon-conjugated molecules, we show that ensemble-averaging with initial configurations from a nuclear quantum distribution remedies many shortcomings of single-trajectory RT-TDDFT+Ehrenfest, damping electronic coherence and introducing ultrafast non-adiabatic coupling between excited states. As the number of sampled configurations decreases with size and rigidity of the compounds, computational costs remain moderate for large systems for which mean-field approaches shine. The explicit inclusion of a time-dependent pulse in the simulations makes this method a prime advance for first-principles studies of coherent nonlinear spectroscopy as an independent counterpart to experimental results.

Abstract:Following the coupled motion of electrons and nuclei in molecules is difficult if one uses time-resolved approaches that only provide direct information on one or the other. We combine two complementary measurements, Time- Resolved Photoelectron/PhotoIon Spectroscopy (TRPES and TRPIS) and Ultrafast Electron Diffraction, to follow the electronic and nuclear dynamics of gas phase CH2I2 when exposed to UV light. In order to interpret the measurement, trajectory surface hopping calculations are carried out and all the measurement observables are simulated and directly compared with the measurement signals. Our measurements highlight the coupled electron-nucleus dynamics that allow for electronic potential energy to be converted into nuclear kinetic energy as well as complicated structural rearrangements of the molecule that involve symmetry breaking, dissociation, rotation, and non-local wave-packet dynamics.

Abstract:The development of attosecond technology has enabled the real-time observation of coherent electron motion in atoms, molecules and condensed phases. Experimentally, it is now possible to generate laser pulses of durations of only a few tens of attoseconds. These durations are of the order of the revolution period of the first Bohr orbit (150 asec), opening the way to visualize and even control electron dynamics at its natural time scale. This PhD thesis constitutes a theoretical study of fundamental phenomena occurring in gas-phase molecules upon interaction with light. We have investigated ultrafast charge migration in biological molecules initiated by attosecond XUV pulses. In addition, we have studied the high-energy interferences that arise in the vibrationally-resolved photoelectron spectra of small polyatomic molecules. In order to explore these complex phenomena, we have employed numerical methods that describe molecular photoionization by evaluating continuum scattering wave functions, allowing us to compute different observables such as time-dependent electron densities or photoionization cross sections.
