Abstract:Intra-body communication (IBC) is a type of Body Area Network (BAN)that utilizes human body as the medium for data transmission. Thelow power requirements of intra-body communication (IBC) as compared to near field electromagnetic waves showed that it can be a suitable solution for Medical Body Area Networks (MBANs) in a mobile health care system.In this paper, we investigate the transmission characteristics of the human body as a conductor of signals by considering different data transmission rates of multi-point to point network in order to reduce overall power consumption of the BAN.Furthermore, we utilize IBC and propose a new scheme to combines Slotted ALOHA, TDMA, and Reservation ALOHA together to increase the throughput and decrease the delay. By using our new hybrid scheme with the movable boundary designed for health status monitoring, we are able to increase the efficiency of data transmission by prioritizing the more critical data from the sensors.

Abstract:The application of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology in modern healthcare environment has given rise to a new paradigm known as healthcare IoT. The wireless body area network (WBAN) is one of the basic building blocks of IoT-based healthcare system, comprising many wearable (on-body) and implant (in-body) sensors placed in or around patient body connected to a hub for physiological signal monitoring. In in-body sensor-based WBAN, guaranteeing quality-of-service and prolonging network lifetime are major impediments due to the sensor location and limited battery capacity. In this article, we propose a novel energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol for IEEE 802.15.6 standard complaint in-body sensor-based WBAN. Typically, the in-body sensor-based WBAN communication is hub-initiated; however, in case of an emergency event, the in-body sensor node transmits an emergency frame arbitrarily without sensing the channel. This inadvertent in-body sensor-initiated transmission has a very high probability of collision with the ongoing hub-initiated transmission, and/or another in-body sensor-initiated emergency frame transmission. This results in emergency frame retransmission and consequently affects the node's energy consumption and lifetime. To alleviate this issue, we propose a modified superframe structure, in which separate access phases are introduced for the emergency event and regular event. In case of an emergency event, a novel emergency event handling scheme and a ranking and priority assignment protocol is proposed to detect and address the critical event of in-body sensors. To minimize the collision, a scheduled access mechanism is proposed according to the criticality of the node. Performance analysis of the proposed in-body sensor MAC is done in terms of latency and overall power consumption, in case of both emergency and regular events.

Abstract:The application carrier of wireless body area network (WBAN) is human; due to changes in people’s sports status or physical health and other reasons, the business traffic fluctuates greatly, which requires the network to have good adaptability. In addition, the energy consumption problem is also a key factor restricting the applications of the WBAN. At present, the proposed MAC protocol is not highly adaptive and has low energy efficiency. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an adaptive MAC protocol based on IEEE802.15.6 for WBAN (A-MAC). The protocol sets the data to three priorities according to the type of service; the superframe structure of IEEE802.15.6 is improved and reorganized into four phases: the beacon phase, the contention access phase, the noncontention access phase, and the inactive phase. The length of the contention access phase and the noncontention access phase is adjusted according to the proportion of nodes that generate each priority data. The contention access phase is further divided into three subphases, and the length of the subphase is dynamically adjusted according to the data priority. In the contention access phase, all nodes compete for access channel according to the channel access policy. The random data that competes successfully transmits data directly, and the periodic data that competes successfully transmits data in the allocated time slots of the noncontention access phase. Finally through the simulation of the proposed A-MAC protocol and IEEE 802.15.6 MAC protocol and CA-MAC protocol in network performance which were compared, the results show that in terms of throughput, power consumption, and the network time delay, the network performance using A-mac protocol is better than the network performance using IEEE802.15.6 MAC and CA-MAC protocols.

Abstract:In wireless body area networks (WBANs), various sensors and actuators are placed on/inside the human body and connected wirelessly. WBANs have specific requirements for healthcare and medical applications, hence, standard protocols like the IEEE 802.15.4 cannot fulfill all the requirements. Consequently, many medium access control (MAC) protocols, mostly derived from the IEEE 802.15.4 superframe structure, have been studied. Nevertheless, they do not support a differentiated quality of service (QoS) for the various forms of traffic coexisting in a WBAN. In particular, a QoS-aware MAC protocol is essential for WBANs operating in the unlicensed Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands, because different wireless services like Bluetooth, WiFi, and Zigbee may coexist there and cause severe interference. In this paper, we propose a priority-based adaptive MAC (PA-MAC) protocol for WBANs in unlicensed bands, which allocates time slots dynamically, based on the traffic priority. Further, multiple channels are effectively utilized to reduce access delays in a WBAN, in the presence of coexisting systems. Our performance evaluation results show that the proposed PA-MAC outperforms the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC and the conventional priority-based MAC in terms of the average transmission time, throughput, energy consumption, and data collision ratio.

Abstract:Wearable sensor devices organized in a Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) have been widely used in healthcare monitoring. However, energy efficiency and reliability are still major problems in this area. An efficient media access control (MAC) protocol is a promising solution. Traditional protocols are too generic and usually used in busy frequency band which are not suitable for a particular medical scenario. On the basis of Human Body Communication (HBC), a MAC protocol for WBAN is proposed in this work which can avoid interference and make non-RF technique available. It also helps reduce power consumption and prolong the network lifetime by reducing transmitting frequency and increasing sleep time of a WBAN node. The protocol utilizes a new ALOHA medium access which defines user priorities for different types of data. Compared with the Slotted ALOHA (S-Aloha) suggested in the IEEE 802.15.6 standard, our method shows good performance in terms of power consumption when the information rate is low. In addition, a circuit system is designed for a medical scenario according to our new protocol.

Abstract:Wireless body area networks (WBANs) have become a leading solution in mobile health (mHealth). Typically, a WBAN consists of in-body or around-body sensor nodes for collecting data of physiological feature. For a WBAN to provide high throughput and low delay in an energy-efficient way, designing an efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol is of paramount importance because the MAC layer coordinates nodes’ access to the shared wireless medium. To show the difference of MAC protocols between Energy-Harvesting wireless body area networks (EH-WBANs) and battery powered WBANs (BT-WBANs), this paper surveys the latest progresses in energy harvesting techniques and WBAN MAC protocol designs. Furthermore, a novel energy utility architecture is designed to enable sensor node lifetime operation in an EH-WBAN.

Abstract:Recently, Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) has witnessed significant attentions in research and product development due to the growing number of sensor-based applications in healthcare domain. Design of efficient and effective Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol is one of the fundamental research themes in WBAN. Static on-demand slot allocation to patient data is the main approach adopted in the design of MAC protocol in literature, without considering the type of patient data specifically the level of severity on patient data. This leads to the degradation of the performance of MAC protocols considering effectiveness and traffic adjustability in realistic medical environments. In this context, this paper proposes a Traffic Priority-Aware MAC (TraPy-MAC) protocol for WBAN. It classifies patient data into emergency and non-emergency categories based on the severity of patient data. The threshold value aided classification considers a number of parameters including type of sensor, body placement location, and data transmission time for allocating dedicated slots patient data. Emergency data are not required to carry out contention and slots are allocated by giving the due importance to threshold value of vital sign data. The contention for slots is made efficient in case of non-emergency data considering threshold value in slot allocation. Moreover, the slot allocation to emergency and non-emergency data are performed parallel resulting in performance gain in channel assignment. Two algorithms namely, Detection of Severity on Vital Sign data (DSVS), and ETS Slots allocation based on the Severity on Vital Sign (ETS-SVS) are developed for calculating threshold value and resolving the conflicts of channel assignment, respectively. Simulations are performed in ns2 and results are compared with the state-of-the-art MAC techniques. Analysis of results attests the benefit of TraPy-MAC in comparison with the state-of-the-art MAC in channel assignment in realistic medical environments.

Bottleneck of MAC layer protocol design for WBAN is to achieve high reliability and energy minimization. Majority of MAC protocols designed for WBANs are based upon TDMA approach. However, a new protocol needs to be defined to achieve high energy efficiency, fairness and avoid extra energy consumption due to synchronization.

Abstract:Background: Human body communication (HBC) using the human body as the transmission medium, which has been regarded as one of the most promising short-range communications in wireless body area networks (WBAN). Compared to the traditional wireless networks, two challenges are existed in HBC based WBAN. (1) Its sensor nodes should be energy saving since it is inconvenient to replace or recharge the battery on these sensor nodes; (2) the coordinator should be able to react dynamically and rapidly to the burst traffic triggered by sensing events. Those burst traffic conditions include vital physical signal (electrocardiogram, electroencephalogram etc.) monitoring, human motion detection (fall detection, activity monitoring, gesture recognition, motion sensing etc.) and so on. To cope with aforementioned challenges, a statistical frame based TDMA (S-TDMA) protocol with multi-constrained (energy, delay, transmission efficiency and emergency management) service is proposed in this paper. Methods: The scenarios where burst traffic is often triggered rapidly with low power consumption and low delay is handled in our proposed S-TDMA. A beacon frame with the contained synchronous and poll information is designed to reduce the possibility of collisions of request frames. A statistical frame which broadcasts the unified scheduling information is adopted to avoid packet collisions, idle listening and overhearing. Dynamic time slot allocation mechanism is presented to manage the burst traffic and reduce the active period in each beacon period. An emergency mechanism is proposed for vital signals to be transmitted. The theory analysis is proceed and the result is evaluated in the hardware platform. Results: To verify its feasibility, S-TDMA was fully implemented on our independently-developed HBC platform where four sensor nodes and a coordinator are fastened on a human body. Experiment results show that S-TDMA costs 89.397 mJ every 20 s when the payload size is 122 bytes, 9.51% lower than Lightweight MAC (LMAC); the average data latency of S-TDMA is 6.3 ms, 7.02% lower than Preamble-based TDMA (PB-TDMA); the transmission efficiency of S-TDMA is 93.67%, 4.83% higher than IEEE 802.15.6 carrier sense multiple access/collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol. Conclusions: With respect to the challenges of HBC based WBANs, a novel S-TDMA protocol was proposed in this paper. Compared to the traditional protocols, the results demonstrate that S-TDMA successfully meets the delay and transmission efficiency requirements of HBC while keeping a low energy consumption. We also believe that our S-TDMA protocol will promote development of HBC in wearable applications.
Channel Characterization of Implantable Intrabody Communication through Experimental Measurements

Abstract:Intrabody communication (IBC), is a promising technology that can be utilized for data transmission across the human body. In this study, a galvanic coupled (GC)-based IBC channel has been investigated for implantable configuration both theoretically and experimentally in the frequency range of 0 to 2.5 MHz. Theoretical studies were performed by using finite element method (FEM) based simulation software, called Comsol Multiphysics. A cylindrical human arm was modeled with realistic values. Experimental studies were carried out with chicken breast tissue as a substitute for human tissue. The pseudorandom noise (PN) sequences were transmitted to investigate the correlative channel sounder of tissue model. Results showed that the frequency affects signal propagation through the tissue model. Additionally, it is crucial to cancel common-mode noise in the IBC channel to enhance communication quality.

Abstract:The finite-element simulation of the intra-body communication used in wireless body area networks has been introduced. Firstly, a novel finite-element method for modeling the whole human body is proposed, while a FE model of the whole human body used for IBC simulation was developed. Secondly, the simulations of the galvanic coupling IBC with the different signal transmission paths were implemented. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method was verified by using the in vivo measurements. Our results indicate that the proposed method will offer the significant advantages in theoretical analysis and the application of the intra-body communication used in wireless body area networks.
A 6.3pJ/b 30Mbps -30dB SIR-tolerant Broadband Interference-Robust Human Body Communication Transceiver using Time Domain Signal-Interference Separation

Abstract:Human Body Communication (HBC) provides a low power communication medium for energy constrained wearable/ implantable devices in and around the human body. This paper presents a broadband HBC transceiver implemented in 65nm CMOS that achieves 6.3pJ/b energy efficiency at 30Mbps with -30dB interference-tolerance. Capacitive termination at the receiver end is used to achieve a wideband HBC channel, and Time Domain Signal-Interference Separation (TD-SIS) using Integrating DDR (I-DDR) receiver allows a tolerance of -30 dB Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR) with a BER <10-3. The transceiver achieves 18X improvement in energy-efficiency compared to the State-of-the-Art HBC transceivers while being simultaneously broadband (carrier-less, low-energy) and interference-robust. Such order-of-magnitude improvement in energy-efficiency and private communication through the human body may enable applications like closed-loop neuromodulation, health-monitoring, secure authentication among many others.

Abstract:The Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN), which comprises of a set of tiny, invasive/non-invasive, light-weight, high-energy-efficient biosensors that monitor human health for early diagnosis and therapy, has lately received a lot of interest from researchers. As present and rising tendencies in communications included with the tendencies in microelectronics and embedded system technologies the existing tech- niques of IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.15.6 standards are explored in WBANs. As a consequence, discussed the challenges of MAC layer in WBAN. Secondly, different multiple access techniques along with TDMA, CSMA/CA, Slotted Aloha and Hybrid are explored in terms of design goals. In literature, a number of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for WBANs have been suggested for addressing the partic- ular challenges associated with reliability, delay, collision and energy within the new research area. The design of MAC protocols is primarily based on multiple access techniques. Finally the general parameters of some popular MAC protocols are highlighted as performance metrics of WBANs.

Abstract:Intra-body communication (IBC) will foster personalized medicine by enabling interconnection of implanted devices. Communication takes place through energy-efficient technologies such as capacitive coupling (CC) and galvanic coupling (GC); however, their modeling is still incomplete. This paper tackles characterization of the human body channel using impulse response, including a first-ever comparison of CC and GC in both wearable and implantable configurations. Experimental data are leveraged to evaluate the measured impulse response in ex-vivo chicken tissue and in-vivo human tissue in a frequency range up to 100 kHz. Pseudorandom noise (PN) sequences are transmitted in baseband and a correlative channel sounding system is implemented. Experimental results demonstrate that the channel is relatively flat in the frequency range of interest, thus offering the opportunity to simplify the design of an IBC transceiver. The relationship between the channel responses and the transmitter-to-receiver distance is also examined using linear correlation, and two regression models are developed. The results show that CC channels are not affected by distance within the range of investigation, while a negative relationship is found for GC channels. Finally, experiments reveal that implantable CC with isolated ground -not deeply investigated yet- is a very promising solution for IBC.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols developed for Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs). In WBANs, small batteryoperated on-body or implanted biomedical sensor nodes are used to monitor physiological signs such as temperature, blood pressure, ElectroCardioGram (ECG), ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) etc. We discuss design requirements for WBANs with major sources of energy dissipation. Then, we further investigate the existing designed protocols for WBANs with focus on their strengths and weaknesses. Paper ends up with concluding remarks and open research issues for future work.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) enabled wireless body area network (WBAN) systems play a crucial role in healthcare monitoring, enhancing patients' well-being at an affordable cost. However, their primary challenge lies in energy constraints. To optimize the limited energy resources and extend the lifetime of devices within the network, a hybrid multichannel (MC) medium access control (MAC) protocol with Markov decision process (MDP-HYMAC) is proposed. This protocol improves energy efficiency, throughput, and network lifetime, and minimizes delays by using separate channels for communication between biomedical devices and access points (APs). In addition, an MDP is employed to stochastically model the systems' transition states and explore optimal communication strategies between biomedical devices and APs. Furthermore, an adaptive power allocation scheme, a time-slot allocation scheme, and a back-off strategy are designed to minimize time-slot wastage, energy consumption, and delays. The proposed protocol outperforms the baseline methods by achieving significant improvements in energy efficiency from 4% to 22%. The findings of this article strongly indicate that the proposed protocol has the potential to significantly improve the performance of WBAN systems, particularly in the context of sustainable healthcare monitoring.

NI-MAC: MAC Protocol Design for Neural Interfaces

Abstract:Neural interfaces play a crucial role in biomedical engineering since they serve as pathways of communication linking the brain and computers. Integrating wireless neural interfaces with a Media Access Control (MAC) protocol presents an efficient method for recording and analyzing neural activities simultaneously from multiple sensor nodes. However, current wireless networks, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs), are not directly applicable to neural interface networks, due to the high complexity and weak priority access support. This paper proposes a MAC protocol called NI-MAC that not only includes priority access but also simplifies the superframe structure and frame formats. Both random access and managed access are included in the superframe design. Analysis of transmission latency and energy consumption shows the improvement over IEEE 802.15.4 and IEEE 802.15.6. With NS3 simulator, we compare the proposed NI-MAC with existing protocols and demonstrate that: transmission latency of high-priority data can achieve 12ms, while under IEEE 802.15.4 it is 22ms; as the number of access nodes increases, energy consumption is reduced by up to 50% compared to IEEE 802.15.6.

Abstract:The recently released IEEE 802.15.6 standard specifies several physical (PHY) layers and medium access control (MAC) layer protocols for variety of medical and non-medical applications of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN). The medical applications of WBAN has several obligatory requirements and constrains viz. high reliability, strict delay deadlines and low power consumption. The standard IEEE 802.15.6 MAC scheme is not able to fulfil the all requirements of medical applications of WBAN. To address this issue we propose an IEEE 802.15.6-based MAC scheme that is the modification of superframe structure, user priorities and access mechanism of standard IEEE 802.15.6 MAC scheme. The proposed superframe has three access phases: random access phases (RAP), manage access phases (MAP) and contention access phase (CAP). The proposed four user priorities nodes access the channel during RAP using CAMA/CA mechanism with a large value of contention window. The proposed MAC scheme uses RTS/CTS access mechanism instead of basic access mechanism to mitigate the effect of hidden and expose terminal problem. Moreover, we develop an analytical model to evaluate the performance of proposed MAC scheme and solve the analytical model using Maple. The results show that the modified IEEE 802.15.6 MAC scheme achieve the better performance in terms of reliability, throughput, average access delay, energy consumption, channel utilization and fairness compared to standard IEEE 802.15.6 MAC scheme in E-health applications.

Comparison is performed between Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA), Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA), Pure ALOHA and Slotted ALOHA (S-ALOHA). Performance metrics used for comparison are Throughput (T), Delay (D) and Offered Load (G). The main goal for comparison is to show which technique gives highest Throughput and lowest Delay with increase in Load. Energy efficiency is major issue in WBAN that is why there is need to know which technique performs best for energy conservation and also gives minimum delay. Simulations are performed for different scenarios and results are compared for all techniques. We suggest TDMA as best technique to be used in MAC protocol for WBANs due to its high throughput and minimum delay with increase in load. MATLAB is the tool that is used for simulation.

Abstract:IEEE 802.11ax uses the concept of primary and secondary channels, leading to the Dynamic Bandwidth Channel Access (DBCA) mechanism. By applying DBCA, a wireless station can select a wider channel bandwidth, such as 40/80/160 MHz, by applying the channel bonding feature. However, during channel bonding, inappropriate bandwidth selection can cause collisions. Therefore, to avoid collisions, a well-developed media access control (MAC) protocol is crucial to effectively utilize the channel bonding mechanism. In this paper, we address a collision scenario, called Outside Warning Range Problem (OWRP), that may occur during DBCA when a wireless station interferes with another wireless station after channel bonding is performed. Therefore, we propose a MAC layer mechanism, Intelligent Bonding Avoiding Collision (IBAC), that adapts the channel bonding level in DBCA in order to avoid the OWRP. We first design a theoretical model based on Markov chains for DBCA while avoiding the OWRP. Based on this model, we design a Thompson sampling based Bayesian approach to select the best possible channel bonding level intelligently. We analyze the performance of the IBAC through simulations where it is observed that, comparing to other competing mechanisms, the proposed approach can enhance the network performance significantly while avoiding the OWRP.
