Abstract:The role of exotic plants in regulating soil microbial community structure and activity following invasion chronosequence remains unclear. We investigated soil microbial community structure and microbial respiration following Spartina alterniflora invasion in a chronosequence of 6-, 10-, 17-, and 20-year-old by comparing with bare flat in a coastal wetland of China. S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased soil moisture and salinity, the concentrations of soil water-soluble organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon (MBC), the quantities of total and various types of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), the fungal: bacterial PLFAs ratio and cumulative microbial respiration compared with bare flat. The highest MBC, gram-negative bacterial and saturated straight-chain PLFAs were found in 10-year-old S. alterniflora soil, while the greatest total PLFAs, bacterial and gram-positive bacterial PLFAs were found in 10- and 17-year-old S. alterniflora soils. The monounsaturated: branched PLFAs ratio declined, and cumulative microbial respiration on a per-unit-PLFAs increased following S. alterniflora invasion in the chronosequence. Our results suggest that S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased the biomass of soil various microbial groups and microbial respiration compared to bare flat soil by increasing soil available substrate, and modifying soil physiochemical properties. Soil microbial community reached the most enriched condition in the 10-year-old S. alterniflora community.

Abstract:Any adverse event that occurs during or after transfusion for which no other cause can be established is labeled as a transfusion reaction. Since the advancements in screening tests for infectious diseases, non-infectious transfusion reactions are on the rise. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of transfusion reactions and to do an audit of reaction reporting. It was a retrospective study done from 1st December 2014 to 31st December 2015 at The Children’s Hospital and Institute of Child Health, Lahore Punjab. The data was retrieved from blood bank records. 22 transfusion reactions were reported, out of which the most common reaction was febrile non haemolytic transfusion reaction. Only one haemolytic transfusion reaction was seen. Among the blood components, most reactions were seen with packed red blood cells. In 90% of cases completely filled reporting forms were received, in 86% of cases post reaction EDTA samples were received, and in only 50% cases urine samples were received in blood bank. Pyrexia was the most frequent symptom in recipients. Re-audit will be done next year. Guidelines need to be followed and updated.

Abstract:Aims The effects of invasive plants on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling are widely documented, while the mechanisms of their influences on the microbial ecology of soil remain unknown. Therefore, the objective of this study was to explore variations in soil bacterial communities following plant invasion, and the mechanisms that drive these changes. Methods An invasive perennial herb, Spartina alterniflora Loisel., was examined via 16S rRNA genetic sequencing analyses, to assess the impacts of plant invasion on soil bacterial communities compared to bare flat and native Suaeda salsa (L.) Pall., Scirpus mariqueter Tang et Wang, and Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud. communities in the coastal zone of China. Results S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased soil bacterial abundance, species richness, and diversity for soil bacterial communities compared with native communities. S. alterniflora soil revealed a unique bacterial community composition, and possessed the highest relative abundance of chemo-lithoautotrophic bacteria, photoautotrophic bacteria (e.g., Chloroflexi, and Anaerolineae), and saprophytic and copiotrophic bacteria (e.g., Bacteroidetes) among the plant communities. Conclusions Our results demonstrated that invasive S. alterniflora significantly altered soil bacterial abundance, diversity, and community composition through increases in nutrient substrate levels and altering soil physiochemical properties. Subsequently, the modification of soil bacterial communities, especially increased relative abundances of Chloroflexi, Anaerolineae, and Bacteroidetes following S. alterniflora invasion can enhance the degradation of recalcitrant S. alterniflora materials, while inducing the accumulation of soil organic C and N. These changes further potentially impacted ecosystem C and N cycles in the coastal zone of China.

Abstract:In order to better understand the variations in soil bacterial community and associated drivers following plant invasion, we investigated changes in soil bacterial community along with 9-, 13-, 20- and 23-year-old Spartina alterniflora Loisel. (SA) invasion in comparison with bare flat (BF) in the eastern Chinese coastal wetlands, based on analyses of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and Illumina MiSeq DNA sequencing of 16S rRNA gene. The SA invasion significantly elevated soil bacterial abundance and diversity relative to BF, with the highest levels in 9-year-old SA soil, which gradually decreased with SA invasion from 9 to 23 years. The abundance of copiotrophic Proteobacteria, beta-proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes generally diminished along with SA invasion chronosequence. While, changes in abundance of oligotrophic Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, Nitrospirae and Planctomycetes exhibited opposite trends. Our data suggest that soil nutrient substrates, and physiochemical properties (soil pH and/or moisture) primarily drive the shifts in soil bacterial abundance, diversity, and community composition along with SA invasion chronosequence in the costal wetlands of eastern China. Overall, soil bacterial abundance and diversity peaked in 9-year-old SA community, with soil bacterial community composition changing from copiotrophic to oligotrophic groups along with SA invasion chronosequence.

(PA) communities in coastal salt marshes of eastern China, based on analyses of the quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and Illumina MiSeq DNA sequences of fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region. Results SA invasion increased the soil fungal abundance and diversity compared to BF, SS, SM, and PA soils. The increased soil fungal abundance and diversity were highly related to soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC), litter C:N ratio, and root C:N ratio. Soil fungal community composition was shifted following SA invasion. Specifically, SA invasion significantly enhanced the relative abundance of Basidiomycota, and reduced the relative abundance of Ascomycota compared with BF, SS, SM, and PA soils. Additionally, SA invasion changed soil fungal trophic modes and functional groups. The relative abundance of saprotrophic fungi significantly increased, while the relative abundances of symbiotic and pathotrophic fungi decreased following SA invasion. Conclusions Our data revealed that SA invasion altered soil fungal abundance, diversity, community composition, trophic modes and functional groups, which were primarily driven by the quality and quantity of plant residues, soil nutrition substrates, as well as soil physicochemical properties. The changes in soil fungal communities, especially their trophic modes and functional groups following SA invasion would greatly affect soil C and N decomposition and accumulation with potential feedback on climate change.

Abstract:Soil microorganisms play a crucial role in the plant invasion process, acting as both drivers of and responders to plant invasion. However, the effects of plant invasion on the complexity and stability of co-occurrence networks of soil microbial communities remain unclear. Here, we investigated how the invasion of Spartina alterniflora affected the diversity, composition, and co-occurrence networks of soil bacterial and fungal communities in the Yellow River Delta, China. Compared to the native plant (Suaeda salsa), S. alterniflora invasion decreased the α-diversity of soil bacterial communities but did not affect that of fungal communities. The β-diversity of soil bacterial and fungal communities under S. salsa and S. alterniflora habitats also differed dramatically. S. alterniflora invasion increased the relative abundance of the copiotrophic phylum Bacteroidota, whereas decreased the relative abundances of the oligotrophic phyla Acidobacteriota and Gemmatimonadota. Additionally, the relative abundance of Chytridiomycota, known for its role in degrading recalcitrant organic matter, increased substantially within the soil fungal community. Functional predictions revealed that S. alterniflora invasion increased the relative abundance of certain soil bacteria involved in carbon and nitrogen cycling, including aerobic chemoheterotrophy, nitrate reduction, and nitrate respiration. More importantly, S. alterniflora invasion reduced the complexity and stability of both soil bacterial and fungal community networks. The shifts in soil microbial community structure and diversity were mainly induced by soil available nutrients and soil salinity. Overall, our study highlights the profound impacts of S. alterniflora invasion on soil microbial communities, which could further indicate the modification of ecosystem functioning by invasive species.

Abstract:Plant invasion may impact ecosystem structure and function, and further affect soil organic matter (SOM) dynamics. However, the influence of plant invasion on soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools sizes, stability, and turnover in SOM of invaded ecosystems is not fully understood. In this study, soil C and N contents, and δ13C and δ15N values of free light fraction (LF), intra-aggregate particulate organic matter (iPOM) and mineral-associated organic matter (mSOM) were investigated in an invasive Spartina alterniflora community, adjacent bare flat and native Suaeda salsa and Phragmites australis communities. Short-term S. alterniflora invasion significantly enhanced organic C and N contents in SOM, free LF, iPOM, mSOM compared with bare flat and increased the proportion of allocated C in iPOM compared with S. salsa and P. australis soils (0–0.30m depth). The proportion of the S. alterniflora-derived C in free LF and iPOM were significantly higher than that in mSOM, and the highest S. alterniflora-derived C content was found in iPOM of S. alterniflora soil. The most enriched δ15N values were found in S. alterniflora soil. Increased δ15N values and decreased C:N ratios from the free LF to iPOM to mSOM in S. alterniflora soil indicated a greater degree of decomposition. The results suggest that 10-year S. alterniflora invasion significantly alters soil organic C and N pools sizes and stability through changing plant residuals input, physical distribution of S. alterniflora-derived C and C turnover in SOM fractions.

Abstract:Soil microbes are important for biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur in wetland ecosystems. There is growing evidence that microorganisms are important for plant invasion. We explored the functional role of microorganisms during the invasion of Spartina alterniflora in coastal areas of China. The exotic plant Spartina alterniflora is expanding rapidly along China's coast regions, seriously threatening native ecosystems. Soil bacteria are important for biogeochemical cycles, including those of carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur, in wetland ecosystems. There is growing evidence that microorganisms are important in case of plant invasion. In the present study, we studied the interlacing area of S. alterniflora and Suaeda heteroptera, selected soil of invaded and non‐invaded regions and explored the effect of the composition and diversity of bacterial communities in coastal wetlands. The bacterial community composition of invasive and noninvasive areas was subjected to high‐throughput sequencing. In the five areas tested, the main bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria, Bacteroides, and Acidobacteria; the richness of the bacterial community in the soil increased after S. alterniflora invasion, most changes occurred at the genus level. The relative abundances of Desulfobulbus and Sulfurovum were higher in invasive areas than in noninvaded areas. PCA, RDA, and LEfSe analyses found that the S. alterniflora invasion significantly influenced the bacterial community and physicochemical properties of wetland soil. In conclusion, soil microbial community composition was tightly associated with S. alterniflora invasion. This study provide an important scientific basis for further research on the invasion mechanism of S. alterniflora.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate soil denitrifying bacterial and fungal community structures and potential denitrification rates in the coastal marsh soils of Eastern China across Spartina alterniflora invasive gradients (i.e. native (Nat), native-Spartina coexisted (Ecot) and Spartina-dominated (Mono) vegetations, respectively). Plant biomass and soil chemical properties were also analyzed to understand the patterns of spatial variability of structure and function of denitrifier communities across the studied gradients. Results indicated that total, bacterial and fungal potential denitrification rates (TDR, BDR and FDR) were 5.5, 3.5 and 1.5 times greater respectively in the Mono soil than in the Nat soil. Denitrifying bacterial richness, evenness and alpha-diversity were 2.0, 1.3 and 1.3 times greater in the Mono soil than those in the Nat soil, while only the richness among denitrifying fungal community parameters was 1.4 times greater in the Mono soil than that in the Nat soil. Plant biomass, soil organic carbon and pH were the most important factors influencing denitrifying bacterial and fungal community structures and functions. Denitrifying bacterial community composition was related closely to BDR and TDR, while denitrifying fungal community composition was not related to FDR and TDR, thus showing that the denitrifying bacterial community is a better predictor of denitrification function following Spartina invasion.

Abstract:Plant invasion has been reported to modify ecosystem carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling processes and pools. The aims of this work were to identify the consequences of plant invasion on C and N dynamics in soil organic matter (SOM) and its fractions following invasion chronosequence. In this study, we investigated the soil C and N contents and the δ13C and δ15N values of the SOM, free light fraction (LF), intra-aggregate particulate organic matter (iPOM) and mineral-associated organic matter (mSOM) in invasive 6-, 10-, 17- and 20-year-old Spartina alterniflora communities and compared with bare flat land in a coastal wetland of eastern China. S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil organic nitrogen (SON) contents in SOM fractions compared with the bare flat land. The SOC, iPOM-C and iPOM-N progressively increased, but the SON, mSOM-C and mSOM-N did not significantly change following S. alterniflora invasion chronosequence. The proportion of C in iPOM gradually increased, whereas that in mSOM decreased following S. alterniflora invasion chronosequence except for the 20-year-old S. alterniflora soil. The highest proportion of S. alterniflora-derived C in SOM and its fractions was found in 17-year-old soil covered by S. alterniflora. The decay rate of old C decreased and the mean residence time of C increased in SOM and its fractions following S. alterniflora invasion chronosequence. The δ15N values of soil under S. alterniflora were more enriched than were those in bare flat land, whereas the δ15N values depleted following invasion chronosequence. Our results show that S. alterniflora invasion significantly altered SOC dynamics following invasion chronosequence by changing C physical distribution in SOM, S. alterniflora-derived C input and C decomposition, ultimately having a greater impact on SOC incorporation relative to SON accumulation in a coastal wetland of eastern China.

Abstract:Microbiologically driven ecosystem processes can be profoundly altered by alien plant invasions. The understanding of ecological mechanisms orchestrating different microbial constituents and their roles in emerging functional properties under plant invasions is limited. Here, we investigated soil microbial communities and functions using high‐throughput amplicon sequencing and GeoChip technology, respectively, along a chronological gradient of smooth cordgrass invasion in salt marshes located in the Yellow River Estuary, China. We found a positive correlation between microbial diversity and the duration age of invasion, and both bacterial and fungal communities exerted orderly changes with invasion. Soil microbial metabolic potential, as indicated by the abundance of microbial functional genes involved in biogeochemical cycling, decreased in response to invasion. As a consequence, declined soil microbial metabolisms by plant invasion facilitated the carbon accumulation in invaded salt marshes. Bacteria and fungi exhibited distinct contributions to assembly processes along the invasion gradient: bacterial communities were mainly driven by selection and dispersal limitation, while fungi were dramatically shaped by stochastic processes. Soil microbial‐mediated functions were taxon‐specific, as indicated by community‐function relationships. This study demonstrates the distinct contributions of microbial constituents to microbial community assembly and functions and sheds light on the implications of plant invasion on microbiologically driven ecosystem processes in coastal wetlands.

Abstract:Terrestrial ecosystems carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycles, affected by plant invasion, are not fully understood. In this study, the impact of 10 years Spartina alterniflora invasion on soil organic matter (SOM), labile, and recalcitrant pools was examined comparing with bare flat and native Suaeda salsa and Phragmites australis communities in tidal salt marshes of the Eastern Chinese coast. Short‐term S. alterniflora invasion significantly raised C and N concentrations in SOM, labile and recalcitrant pools compared to bare flat, S. salsa and P. australis soils. Spartina alterniflora soil had higher recalcitrant index for C relative to bare flat. The proportion of S. alterniflora ‐derived C and the decomposition rate of old C in the labile pool were significantly higher than those in the recalcitrant pool. However, the S. alterniflora ‐derived C stock of the recalcitrant pool was much greater than that of the labile pool. The SOM and recalcitrant pools in S. alterniflora soil had significantly higher δ 15 N levels compared with bare flat, indicating an increased N loss following S. alterniflora invasion. The results suggested that short‐term S. alterniflora invasion significantly enlarged soil organic C and N pools via altering SOM input and decomposition.
Invasion of Exotic Spartina Alterniflora Alters the Size, Availability, and Stability of the Soil Phosphorus Pool in the Coastal Wetlands of Eastern China

Abstract:Invasive plant species can significantly impact biogeochemical cycles, particularly carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Despite phosphorus (P) being an indispensable limiting nutrient for plant growth and one of the critical biogeochemical cycles, little consideration has been given to the effects of invasive plant species on soil P pool and their driving mechanisms. In this study, we investigated the impacts of Spartina alternifolia invasion on the size, availability, and stability of soil (0-30 cm) P pool, in contrast to bare flat, native Suaeda salsa, and Phragmites australis communities in the coastal wetlands of Eastern China. It was observed that S. alterniflora invasion significantly increased the concentrations and ratios of soil (0-30 cm) labile P and moderately-labile P compared with S. salsa and P. australis communities, while it decreased the concentration and proportion of stable P relative to P. australis community, which implied that S. alterniflora invasion promoted soil P availability but lowered its stability. Soil microbial attributes (i.e., alkaline phosphatase (ALP), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), microbial biomass P), and soil microenvironment (e.g., moisture, pH, salinity) were found as the overwhelming driving factors for the variations in soil labile P fraction. While soil microenvironment and plant properties mainly regulated stable P. We concluded that S. alterniflora invasion significantly enlarged soil (0-30 cm) P pool, increased soil P availability, and reduced P stability by modifying soil P fractions that were mainly affected by greatly increased aboveground biomass, foliar total P, soil moisture, salinity, nutrient substrates, ALP, AMF, and microbial biomass P following S. alterniflora invasion. The variations in these factors modified soil P fractions and promoted soil P cycle. Notably, enhanced soil P availability following S. alterniflora invasion may assist with its further expansion, and may increase the likelihood of potential water contamination in coastal areas by triggering the release of dissolved P.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play a critical role in global carbon (C) cycling while they are frequently challenged by exotic plant invasion. Microbial residues are increasingly recognized as the key constituent of stable soil organic C (SOC) but their responses to plant invasion in coastal wetlands remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated the effect of Spartina alterniflora invasion on microbial residues and their contribution to SOC in coastal wetland ecosystems with distinct native species ( Phragmites australi s (marsh), Kandelia candel or Avicennia marina ). S. alterniflora invasion differentially altered microbial residue C accumulation in three coastal wetlands. Overall, the invasion of S. alterniflora significantly increased microbial residue C accumulation (17.8%) in marsh with native P. australis , while it showed negative or minor impacts on mangroves with K. candel and A. marine communities, despite nuanced site-specific differences. The divergent responses of microbial residues could be related to changes in edaphic conditions and plant inputs along with plant invasion process. Invasion of mangrove and marsh communities by S. alterniflora triggered divergent fungal and bacterial residue responses, leading to contrasting fungal to bacterial C ratios in invaded marsh and mangrove wetlands. The proportion of microbial residues in SOC pool was enhanced to some extent, with an increase by 14.4%, 33.0% and 1.9% in P. australis , K. candel and A. marine wetlands, respectively, despite inconsistent variations in total SOC with S. alterniflora invasion. This has an implication for an elevated preservation of microbial residue C relative to the other organic C fractions in the invaded coastal wetlands. These findings highlight the importance of anabolic microbial C sequestration process for the maintenance of wetland soil C, which may impact C cycling and balance in coastal wetland ecosystem subjected to S. alterniflora invasion. Our work provides new insights to capture the properties and mechanisms of microbial control over C sequestration as well as SOC source configuration in coastal wetlands undergoing S. alterniflora invasion.

Abstract:It has been reported that the invasion of Spartina alterniflora changed the soil microbial community in the mangrove ecosystem in China, especially the bacterial community, although the response of soil fungal communities and soil microbial ecological functions to the invasion of Spartina alterniflora remains unclear. In this study, we selected three different communities (i.e., Spartina alterniflora community (SC), Spartina alterniflora–mangrove mixed community (TC), and mangrove community (MC)) in the Zhangjiangkou Mangrove Nature Reserve in China. High-throughput sequencing technology was used to analyze the impact of Spartina alterniflora invasion on mangrove soil microbial communities. Our results indicate that the invasion of Spartina alterniflora does not cause significant changes in microbial diversity, but it can alter the community structure of soil bacteria. The results of the LEfSe (LDA Effect Size) analysis show that the relative abundance of some bacterial taxa is not significantly different between the MC and SC communities, but different changes have occurred during the invasion process (i.e., TC community). Different from the results of the bacterial community, the invasion of Spartina alterniflora only cause a significant increase in few fungal taxa during the invasion process, and these taxa are at some lower levels (such as family, genus, and species) and classified into the phylum Ascomycota. Although the invasion of Spartina alterniflora changes the taxa with certain ecological functions, it may not change the potential ecological functions of soil microorganisms (i.e., the potential metabolic pathways of bacteria, nutritional patterns, and fungal associations). In general, the invasion of Spartina alterniflora changes the community structure of soil microorganisms, but it may not affect the potential ecological functions of soil microorganisms.

Abstract:Soil microorganisms can be altered by plant invasion into wetland ecosystems and comprise an important linkage between phosphorus (P) availability and soil carbon (C) chemistry; however, the intrinsic mechanisms of P and C transformation associated with microbial community and function are poorly understood in coastal wetland. In this study, we used a sequential fractionation method and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to capture the changes in soil P pools and C chemical composition with bare flats (BF), native Phragmites australis(PA), and invasive Spartina alterniflora(SA), respectively. The responses of the soil microbial community using phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiling and function indicated by nine enzyme activities associated with C, nitrogen (N), and P cycles were also investigated. Compared to PA and BF, SA invasion significantly (P < 0.05) changed P pools and mainly increased the available P by 17.5 and 37.0%, respectively. The presence of the plants (SA and PA) significantly (P < 0.05) altered the soil C chemical composition mainly by affecting the aliphatic functional groups, resulting in a lower alkyl C/O-alkyl C ratio value. Compared to BF and SA, PA significantly (P < 0.05) increased arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) abundance. Soil enzyme activity, especially for the P and C cycle enzymes, was also affected by plant species with the highest geometric mean enzyme and hydrolase activity for the PA zone. We also found that soil C compositions and P pools were associated with microbial community structure and enzyme activity, respectively. However, little interaction between C and P was found on either soil microbial composition or soil enzyme activity variation. Further, microbial community composition was tightly correlated with the soil P compared to soil C chemistry, while enzyme activity showed more response with soil C chemistry compared to soil P pool changes.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Invasion of Spartina alterniflora has been reported to modify carbon (C) cycling processes and pools of the native salt marsh ecosystems. However, it remains unclear how the invasion age and expansion direction of S. alterniflora impact the soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics. In this study, by considering the continuous invasion of S. alterniflora into mudflat (seaward) and native species Suaeda salsa (landward) salt marshes over a period of 20 years chronosequence, we quantify their impacts on SOC dynamics along the coastal salt marshes of Yancheng National Nature Reserve of China, based on the extensive field sampling and remote sensing data. The results showed that (1) S. alterniflora invasion increased SOC concentration and density, which averaged 8.39 g C kg−1 and 0.0085 g C cm−3 seaward and 6.26 g C kg−1 and 0.0065 g C cm−3 landward, respectively; (2) soil organic carbon showed a significantly positive relationship with total nitrogen (TN), salinity, and water content and a negative relationship with pH and bulk density for S. alterniflora landward expansion. For seaward expansion, it showed a similar relationship, but there are higher correlations with soil properties except an insignificant relationship with pH; and (3) soil organic carbon and carbon accumulation rate are significantly higher in seaward than in landward. However, for landward expansion, soil organic carbon concentration keeps increasing linearly with invasion time, while for seaward expansion, it increased to a maximum in 11 years of invasion and then decreased. Our results showed that it is very important to assess the effects of invasion on SOC dynamics in salt marsh ecosystems by considering both the expansion direction and invasion age.

Abstract:We investigated carbon (C) fluxes from Spartina alterniflora community comparing with native C3‐plant (Suaeda salsa and Phragmites australis) communities as well as mudflat in a coastal marsh in eastern China by determining the net ecosystem exchange (NEE), ecosystem respiration (RECO) and soil respiration (RSOIL) monthly with static chambers over one year. Plant biological traits and soil organic carbon (SOC) were measured at the end of the growing season. Gross primary production (GPP) was calculated as the sum of RECO and NEE, while the respiration of aboveground plant (RAG) was assessed by the difference between RECO and RSOIL. The invasion of S. alterniflora significantly increased RECO, GPP, and RAG in salt marsh. The NEE in the S. alterniflora community was significantly lower than in mudflat and S. salsa community (p < 0.05), but was comparable to that in P. australis community (p > 0.05). RSOIL among sites with different communities did not show significant variations (p > 0.05). Surface water inhibited RSOIL and made it insensitive to changes in environmental factors across communities. Relative to other communities, the lower shoot–root ratio of S. alterniflora community together with its higher RECO and RAG determined a higher proportion of C allocated in belowground, which ultimately resulted in increment of SOC as well as increased GPP. The invasion of S. alterniflora potentially induces a negative feedback to the global climate change by regulating the C sequestration in salt marsh ecosystems.

Abstract:Coastal wetlands play a crucial role in the global carbon (C) cycle; however, they have been affected by the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora . The impacts of S. alterniflora invasions on soil organic carbon (SOC) source and composition in wetlands are poorly understood compared to SOC stocks. This hinders the accurate estimation of blue C budgets owing to the long-term effects of S. alterniflora invasions. Here, a space-for-time substitution method was applied to investigate SOC accumulation in invasive 5-, 10-, 15-, 18-, and 21-year-old S. alterniflora communities. This was compared with bare flat in the topsoil (0–10 cm) and subsoil (30–60 cm) of coastal wetlands. Biomarkers (lignin phenols and amino sugars) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to describe the accumulation patterns of plant- and microbial-derived C across varying S. alterniflora invasion times, as well as associated stabilization mechanisms. Plant-derived C dominated the SOC content compared to microbial-derived C during S. alterniflora invasions, while microbial-derived C played a more critical role in SOC stability than that of plant-derived C. At both soil depths, microbial-derived C gradually increased with increasing invasion time, whereas plant-derived C initially increased and then decreased, consistent with changes in SOC content. The variation in inundation conditions, influenced by tides, emerged as a significant factor affecting the accumulation of plant- and microbial-derived C, as well as SOC stability. Decreased inundation frequency and increased oxygen exposure, driven by tides, may lead to a rapid rise in SOC mineralization and the enrichment of microbial-derived C at the expense of plant-derived C. Consequently, this process improved SOC stability. These findings hold substantial implications for potential C loss resulting from the long-term impacts of S. alterniflora invasions. Furthermore, they may help predict the long-term effects of S. alterniflora invasions on blue C budgets within the context of global change scenarios.
