Role of Colors in Pediatric Dental Practices

Abstract:Objective: This study evaluated the association between colors and emotions in a pediatric dental population. Study design: In this randomized cross-sectional study, 100 children aged 6-12 years were categorized as non-anxious and anxious using Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale-Revised. They were then instructed to color two cartoon faces, one depicting happiness emotion and the other, sadness, with any of six colors provided. Data obtained were statistically analyzed. Results: The mean Corah's Dental Anxiety scores were 11.7 and 4.97 for the anxious and non-anxious children, respectively. Both groups expressed the highest preference for the color yellow for happiness emotion. No significant differences were observed between color choices in either group (p>0.05), except for black which was not chosen by any child for happiness (p<0.005). Children in both groups significantly preferred red for sadness emotion. No significant differences were observed between color choices in the anxious group (p>0.05). In the non-anxious group, yellow assumed significant preference over green (p<0.05). Conclusions: Yellow was the most-preferred color and black, the least-preferred, for happiness emotion, whereas, for sadness emotion, red and green were the most- and least-preferred colors, respectively. Color preference was not affected by the presence of dental anxiety.
Child friendly colors in a pediatric dental practice

Abstract:Background: The child's perception of the dental environment is a significant factor causing dental anxiety. If the color of the dental environment can have a positive impact on the child's behavior, it is possible that those colors may add to the comfort of a child, thus reducing dental anxiety. Aim: To evaluate the association between color and emotions of children in a pediatric dental set-up. Design: A total of 300 children aged 6-12 years were divided into 2 groups: Younger children (6-9 years, n = 156) and older children (9-12 years, n = 144). All the children were asked to shade two cartoon faces representing happiness and fear with their most preferred color. Results: For the positive emotion, 44% (n = 132) of the children preferred yellow, followed by blue 32.67% (n = 98). For negative emotion, 56.67% (n = 170) of the children preferred black and 42.67% (n = 128) preferred red. Association between color and emotion was highly significant (P < 0.001). Conclusion: This study has attempted to advance the area of color research to dental anxiety in children visiting a dental clinic. The use of child friendly colors like yellow and blue in the dental work place could enhance a positive dental attitude in the child's mind.

Abstract:Background: Severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) is recognized as a significant chronic disease which affects the quality of life starting at very young ages and has a very rapid evolution towards pulp complication and loss of dental tissue. Children with a high caries index DMFT are more likely to develop high levels of dental anxiety, which will influence the degree of cooperation during dental procedures. Emotions play an important role in the psychosomatic development of children, and all the factors that contribute to the modeling of these emotional states must be known and taken into consideration. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the association between dental anxiety in children with S-ECC and the color preferences for the components of the dental environment to reduce the levels of dental anxiety during medical visits. Material and method: For this study, 91 children between 3 and 6 years of age diagnosed with S-ECC were selected from the Pediatric Dentistry Department of UMFST from Targu Mures and from a private dental office. The level of dental anxiety was determined by measuring the pulse rate, and a questionnaire was completed to establish the color preferences for the dental office environment and the dentist's attire. For this purpose, six different colors and their variants with three shades less intensity were chosen by using RGB (Red, Green, and Blue) identification codes for each color. Result: The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the age of the subjects and dental anxiety levels, but there was no significant correlation between the DMFT score and dental anxiety. Also, the results showed that there was no significant difference between girls and boys when choosing the colors preferred by them for the dental office, but when comparing the colors that represented happiness, significant statistical difference was found between the girls' and boys' groups (p = 0.0039). For all the subjects, the colors associated with happiness were light yellow and pink, while the colors associated with anxiety were red and dark blue. Conclusion: The data obtained showed that dental anxiety is strongly influenced by age, and an important role in inducing positive emotions is played by the dental environment if dressed in specific colors in order to reduce dental anxiety and create familiar conditions, especially for young children with S-ECC.
Child's friendly dental attire, a game changer for anxiety and pain management in dental environment, a randomized clinical trial

Abstract:Dental anxiety usually stands in the way of obtaining adequate dental treatment, and the dental setting and team are considered factors that may affect dental anxiety. Many cross-sectional studies have indicated that dentally anxious children prefer their dentist to wear friendly attire rather than a conventional white coat, but no clinical trial has detected the effect of wearing a child's friendly attire on anxiety levels among young patients. A total of 120 children were enrolled in this study and divided into four groups in which the dentists wore either friendly attire or white coat in the reception and treatment areas. Anxiety and pain were assessed while the patients received a dental injection. A statistically significant decrease in anxiety levels was observed in the 1st group compared with the other three groups after dental infiltration into the maxilla. The pain scores were significantly lower in the 1st group, whereas the control group patients scored the highest scores. A child's friendly attire can help dentists build positive relationships with young patients and help reduce their anxiety.

Comparative evaluation of the osteoinductivity of two formulations of human demineralized bone matrix.

Abstract:In the United States, demineralized bone matrix (DBM) is considered a transplantable tissue and therefore is regulated primarily by the American Association of Tissue Banks. Even though DBM is not subjected to the same regulations relative to performance claims as medical devices are, one would expect different processing methods might yield DBM preparations of different osteoinductive potential. The purpose of this study was to use an established athymic rat model to compare the osteoinductive properties of two commercially available human DBMs prepared using different methods but having essentially identical product claims. Sixteen female athymic rats were used to test equivalent volumes of two lots each of Grafton Putty (Osteotech, Inc., Eatontown, NJ), Osteofil (Regeneration Technologies, Inc., Alachua, FL), and rat DBM. At 28 days after implantation, qualitative and semiquantitative microscopy showed no significant differences in bone formation between the two lots from each source, but rat DBM produced significantly more bone than Grafton, which produced significantly more bone than Osteofil. Our results suggest that methods of graft processing may represent a greater source of variability than do differences among individual donors. Whether these differences relate to methods of demineralization, carrier, dose of DBM per volume, or to some other factor remains to be determined.

Abstract:Introduction: Play is the most important activity of a child's life.It is the way he/she communicates with the environment where he lives,expressing not only his feelings of love,but also his anxieties and frustrations, as well as criticism of the family environment and relationships,and leading to the harmonious development of his personality.Aim:The main aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of play activities to reduce the anxiety level of hospitalized children at the age group of 4-10 years.Methodology:A Quasi-experimental research design in which Non-randomized control group pretest and post-test design was adopted on 20 hospitalized children (10 experimental and 10 control group) at the age group of 4-10 years in paediatric wards of selected hospitals at Bangalore, India.The samples were selected by using purposive sampling technique.The Anxiety Level Assessment of Hospitalized Children was used to assess the anxiety level of hospitalized children. Result: In this study, the Mean Pre-test level of anxiety among hospitalized children in Experimental Group was 96.00 with a Standard Deviation of 23.357.Where as in the Control Group, the Mean Pre-test level of anxiety among hospitalized children was 90.900 with a S.D of 19.997.The Mean Post-test level of anxiety among hospitalized children in Experimental Group was 56.20 with a Standard Deviation of 19.031.Where as in the Control Group the Mean Post-test level of anxiety among hospitalized children was 91.50 with a S.D of 19.426.A paired t test was compiled to determine whether the observed difference in mean Pre Test and Mean Post -test level of anxiety among hospitalized children Score of experimental group was statistically significant.The observed t value of 9.951 was higher than the table value at 0.05 indicating that the observed difference in mean was statistically significant. Similarly in the control group,the observed value 0.441 was less than the Table value at 0.05 indicating that the observed difference in mean was not statistically significant. Conclusion: The study concluded that proposed play activities is an effective method for reducing the anxiety level of hospitalized children

Abstract:Background: Play is a tremendous method of communication, expansion of social relationship and communal understanding. Admission into the hospital leads to anxiety and strain for children due to alteration in the settings and their health conditions. Children suffer from separation anxiety; they are not cooperative and do not allow nurses to do any invasive procedures. So the study aimed to find out the anxiety level and role of art and play therapy to overcome it. Material and methods: Sixty preschool hospitalised children were selected for the study. Data were collected through a self-structured questionnaire on socio-demographic and hospitalisation anxiety scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. Results: The study findings revealed that 75%, 20% and 5% of children had moderate, severe and mild anxiety during hospitalisation. There was a significant difference observed between pre-test and a post-test mean score of anxiety level in art and play therapy at p<0.0001. A significant relationship was observed between the duration of hospitalisation and anxiety level. Conclusion: The present study's findings conclude that art therapy and play therapy are cost-effective, convenient, and require less skill to reduce anxiety among hospitalised preschool children.
Coloring complex shapes decreases patient anxiety in three care environments: a pilot study with color analysis

Abstract:Introduction: This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of coloring activity of circular symmetrical shape with complex patterns, so-called mandala, on anxiety associated with chronic illness in three different ambulatory medical situations (general consultation, psychiatric day hospital, and hemodialysis session). Methods: Thirty patients were included in three groups and came from three different ambulatory medical situations: a hemodialysis group ( n = 10), a psychiatric day hospital group ( n = 10), and a nephrology consultation group ( n = 10). We asked the patients to fill STAI-S and STAI-T questionnaires before to color complex circular shape with complex patterns, then to fill the STAI-S questionnaire again and a questionnaire on the experience of the activity. Results: The results show that the STAI-S score was significantly lower after coloring for the hemodialysis ( p = 0.02) and psychiatric groups ( p = 0.005) but not for the general consultation group ( p = 0.26). STAI-T scores did not differ between groups. The distribution of colors in the mandala was different in the three groups of patients. A positive subjective experience of the activity was found in all groups. Discussion: These results show the effectiveness of a coloring activity of a circular shape with complex patterns on anxiety associated with chronic illness in care environment. The different distribution of the colors of the mandala in the three groups raises the question of the influence of the context on the mood of the patients and the deeper meaning of the choice of colors and their placement in the mandala. Our study reinforces the multiple applications of art activities in different medical disciplines and encourages their development within healthcare settings.

Abstract:Background: Dental anxiety is characterized by distress in anticipation of dental visits, which may result in a child's refusal to undergo treatment and, ultimately, lead to parents' reluctance towards dental care. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of the tell-show-do technique, modeling technique and yogic relaxation technique in the reduction of dental anxiety among children aged 6-12 years. Material and methods: The study was an interventional, parallel-group, single-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial conducted on 120 children who required restorative treatment without the use of local anesthesia. The participants were selected based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria and were randomly divided into 3 groups: group 1 - tell-show-do technique; group 2 - modeling technique; group 3 - yogic relaxation technique. The dental anxiety levels were evaluated 4 times using both physiological (oxygen saturation and pulse rate) and behavioral parameters (facial image scale (FIS) and the Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, and Consolability scale (FLACC)). The data was assessed by 2 blinded and calibrated specialists. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed in all 4 parameters among the 3 groups. During both the intraoperative and postoperative periods, the oxygen saturation levels were significantly higher in the yogic relaxation technique group. Moreover, the yogic relaxation technique group exhibited lower pulse rates, FIS and FLACC scores compared to the tell-show-do and modeling technique groups. Conclusions: The practice of yoga has a positive influence on the general health of the individual. Consequently, it can be considered one of the alternative behavioral modification techniques for the reduction of dental anxiety in children.
Effects of human figure type on children's use of colour to depict sadness and happiness

Abstract:This study was designed to assess the impact of drawing topic on children's colour use when drawing affectively salient topics. 82 children (42 boys, 40 girls) aged between 6 year 1 month and 8 year 11month (X = 7 year, 6 month) participated in counterbalanced colour preference rating and drawing sessions. In line with past research, results indicated that children selected colours in relation to their colour preferences and the emotional character of the figure, and they systematically used specific colours when depicting sad figures more cohesively than when depicting happy figures. The use of specific colours varied by topic type. Colour choice was not wholly determined by realism which that the precise topic needs to be accounted for when claims are made about how children feel about the topics they draw on the basis of colour use.

Abstract:Background: Assessment of dental anxiety in children is difficult because of their immature cognitive and emotional development. Drawings are well well-established emotion assessment tool. These can be used as nonverbal methods of communication for expressing the children's anxiety and emotions. Art therapy utilizes creative therapy interventions to deal with children suffering from emotional problems. Aims and Objectives: The aim of the study is (1) To assess the drawings of children for the presence of dental anxiety. (2) To study the effectiveness of art therapy on dental anxiety in children. Materials and Methods: One hundred and twenty children within the age group of 6–12 years were part of this study. The pretest assessment of dental anxiety was done using Frankl and Five facial anxiety scales. All the participants received local anesthesia during their first treatment session. At the end of the treatment session, all the participants were asked to draw a picture of their experience. The drawn figures were assessed by a psychologist. The children were allotted randomly into the study group ( n = 60) and control group ( n = 60). Art therapy was given to 60 children in the study group for three consecutive appointments. The posttest assessment of dental anxiety was done using Frankl and Five facial anxiety scales after completion of the entire dental treatment. Results: The pretest scores revealed very high level of dental anxiety in 33 (55%) children in study group and 34 (56.67%) children in control group. The posttest scores of study group, who received the art therapy, revealed that 24 (40%) children had little anxiety and 32 (53.33%) children had some anxiety. Whereas in the control group, the posttest scores showed 20 (33.33%) children had high anxiety and 39 (65%) children had very high anxiety scores. There was a significant correlation between the objective score of dental anxiety and the subjective scores of CD: H. Conclusion: Drawings can be used as an assessment tool for the detection of dental anxiety and art therapy effectively reduces the anxiety in pediatric patients undergoing dental treatment.
Efficiency of a Sensory-Adapted Dental Environment Versus Regular Dental Environment in Neurotypically Healthy Children: A Parallel-Arm Interventional Study

Abstract:Introduction The basic principle of a sensory adaptive dental environment is that an individual's sensory experiences have a significant impact on their emotional and psychological well-being. Taste, smell, touch, hearing, and sight are the five basic senses that affect our perception and responses to the environment. The study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a Sensory-Adaptive Dental Environment (SADE) compared with a Regular Dental Environment (RDE) in reducing anxiety, improving behavior, and providing a smooth experience for children undergoing dental treatment. Materials and methods This parallel-arm pilot study was conducted at the outpatient Department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Chennai, from January 2024 to March 2024. A total of 148 children who met the inclusion criteria were divided into two groups: Group I (intervention group) received SADE or MSE (Multi-Sensory Environment) intervention, while Group 2 (control group) underwent dental treatments in a Regular Dental Environment (RDE). Patient behavior was assessed using Frankl's behavior rating scale, and anxiety levels were measured using Ayesha's Oddbodd anxiety scale. Additionally, heart rate and oxygen saturation (SpO2) were evaluated using a pulse oximeter. Statistical analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY), with significance set at a p-value less than 0.05. Results Before the procedure, there were no notable differences in behavior or anxiety levels. However, after the procedure, children undergoing treatment under SADE resulted in markedly improved behavior and notably lower anxiety levels. Also, this correlated with reduced anxiety levels, indicated by lower heart rates and higher oxygen saturation levels. Conclusion The study concluded that there were notable differences in patient experiences between SADE and RDE. After their dental procedures, participants in the SADE group were found to behave better and feel less nervous. Still, in the conventional setting, only improved behavior was noted, with no significant difference in anxiety levels. Overall, our study suggests that dental offices can significantly enhance patient experiences by providing a sensory-friendly setting that helps children feel more at ease, improves patient outcomes, and less nervous during their visits.

Abstract:A comprehensive study on radome materials for a wideband, high power millimeter wave horn antenna is undertaken in the thermal, mechanical and electromagnetic domains. The radome must thermally handle continuous high power, mechanically withstand pressurization, have low loss and minimize the impact on the antenna match and far-field. Studies using several materials in each domain are conducted to determine which is the most suitable. Practical considerations such as available thicknesses and durability are heavily weighted in the selection process for practical realization of the radome.
Influence of pretreatment exposure to pediatric dental care using the "Tiny dentist" game on 4-7 years old children's pain and anxiety: a parallel randomised clinical trial

Abstract:There have been no experiments on interactive modelling through computer games, although there have been a few on modelling a pre-exposure method for managing anxiety among preschoolers. The impact of partaking in a dental simulation game prior to the dental treatment on pain and anxiety in kids aged 4 to7 years during their first appointment was studied. A total of 156 kids who required unilateral pulp therapy and preformed crowns on their mandibular primary molars were enrolled in this double-blind, randomized clinical trial. They were then randomly assigned to intervention and control groups. The intervention group engaged in the game three times/day for 07 days prior to the anticipated appointment. The Wong-Baker Faces Rating Scale (WBFRS) was used to record their pre- and post-operative pain experienced during the dental procedure. Additionally, a finger pulse oximeter was used to record heart rate (HR) at each of the six treatment phases: baseline (the first session, two weeks prior to treatment) and stages 2-6. Playing video games considerably lowered the heart rate. Playing and the treatment period interacted in a major way. On comparing the groups at every time point, the intervention group displayed lower HR during injection, tooth preparation with an air-rotor and biomechanical preparation with endodontic rotary files.The results suggest that engaging in specific dental simulation games prior to the 1st dentist visit could help preschoolers feel less anxious during routine dental operations.
Iris colour and subjective emotional status in Chinese adolescents

Abstract:Background Understanding the iris colour might be a useful biomarker in predicting emotional health status. We aimed to examine the relationship of iris colour with subjective emotional status in a sample of Chinese adolescents aged 13 to 14 years. Methods A total of 2346 students from ten middle schools in Mojiang participated the examination. The emotional health status was measured by the adolescent self-reported PedsQL 4.0. We obtained standardized slit-lamp photographs and developed a grading system assessing iris colour (higher grade denoting darker). Logistic regression models were fitted to assess the relationship between iris colour and emotional status. Results The trend of decreasing negative emotional status with darker iris colour was significantly. Compared with grades 1 and 2 of iris colour, the students with grades 4 and 5 had less negative emotional status ( OR fear = 0.56, 95 % CI : 0.41, 0.76; OR sadness = 0.67, 95 % CI : 0.49, 0.92; OR anger = 0.71, 95 % CI : 0.52, 0.98). In addition, the trend did not change after adjusting for potential confounders, including height, waist circumstance, sleep habits and computer times in logistic regression models. Limitations Only negative emotional indexes were selected as evaluative materials, it is unclear whether the pattern found in the present study also exists with regard to positive emotional indexes, such as happiness. Conclusion Darker iris colour might be associated with less negative emotional status in Chinese adolescents.

Abstract:In recent decades reported findings regarding gender differences in reading achievement, cognitive abilities and maturation process in boys and girls are conflicting. As reading is one of the most important processes in the maturation of an individual, the aim of the study was to better understand gender differences between primary school students. The study evaluates differences in Heart Rate Variability (HRV), Electroencephalography (EEG), Electrodermal Activities (EDA) and eye movement of participants during the reading task. Taking into account that colour may affect reading skills, in that it affects the emotional and physiological state of the body, the research attempts to provide a better understanding of gender differences in reading through examining the effect of colour, as applied to reading content. The physiological responses of 50 children (25 boys and 25 girls) to 12 different background and overlay colours of reading content were measured and summarised during the reading process. Our findings show that boys have shorter reading duration scores and a longer Saccade Count, Saccade Duration Total, and Saccade Duration Average when reading on a coloured background, especially purple, which could be caused by their motivation and by the type of reading task. Also, the boys had higher values for the Delta band and the Whole Range of EEG measurements in comparison to the girls when reading on coloured backgrounds, which could reflect the faster maturation of the girls. Regarding EDA measurements we did not find systematic differences between groups either on white or on coloured/overlay background. We found the most significant differences arose in the HRV parameters, namely (SDNN (ms), STD HR (beats/min), RMSSD (ms), NN50 (beats), pNN50 (%), CVRR) when children read the text on coloured/overlay backgrounds, where the girls showed systematically higher values on HRV measurements in comparison to the boys, mostly with yellow, red, and orange overlay colours.

Abstract:A great deal of interest has received atrial fibrillation, the most common arrhythmia in adults, due to its complications and difficult treatment its most dreaded complication is atrial thrombi formation with the subsequent risk of embolization. There are several reports defining risk factors for embolic complications and the usefulness of anticoagulants for their prevention. We review the state of the art of anticoagulation in atrial fibrillation not associated to rheumatic valvulopathy. We also give tools to assess embolic risk and to determine the anticoagulant choice for the different presentation forms of atrial fibrillation.
Comparative Evaluation of the Efficacy of Virtual Reality Distraction, Audio Distraction and Tell-show-do Techniques in Reducing the Anxiety Level of Pediatric Dental Patients: An In Vivo Study

Abstract:Objectives and methods: Children, in the age-group of 6 to 8 years, with moderate level of anxiety, (measured with M-DAS), requiring inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) for mandibular tooth extraction were selected. Informed consent was obtained from parents. Selected children were allocated randomly into 3 groups virtual reality (VR) distraction group, audio distraction group and Tell-show-do (TSD) group. Pre- and post- distraction anxiety level of children was measured subjectively with facial image scale and objectively with pulse rate and oxygen saturation (measured with pulse oxymeter).Results: There was a statistically significant decrease in pulse rate after distraction (with a p < 0.01) in all the three groups. Postdistraction pulse rate was lowest in the VR distraction group when compared to other groups. While comparing postdistraction pulse rate values in the three groups, the difference in pulse rate between TSD and VR distraction group was significant. But while comparing the pulse rate between audio distraction and TSD group (p = 0.06), and audio distraction and VR distraction group (p = 0.24) was not statistically significant. Oxygen saturation increased in all the three groups which was statistically significant (p < 0.01). There was a statistically significant difference in the postdistraction oxygen (O2) saturation levels between TSD and audio distraction groups (p < 0.05) with more O2 saturation in audio distraction group. But while comparing the audio distraction with VR group and TSD with VR group, the difference was not significant. Facial image scale (FIS) scores decreased in all the three groups (p < 0.01).Conclusion: The overall results revealed by all the parameters indicate that children were most relaxed in VR group, followed by audio group and were least relaxed in TSD group during dental visits. Hence VR distraction can be considered as a useful technique for behavior management of pediatric patients during a conventional dental treatment.How to cite this article: SG G, George S, S A, et al.
