Abstract:Invasive plants from their native and introduced ranges differ in their interactions with herbivores but it is not known whether they also vary in their interactions with herbivore natural enemies. Here, we used olfactometer bioassays and cage experiments to investigate how foraging behaviors of 2 parasitoid and 1 hyperparasitoid species depended on plant population origin. Triadica sebifera (Euphorbiaceae) is native to China but invasive in the United States. In China, it is fed on by a specialist noctuid Gadirtha fusca (Lepidoptera: Nolidae), which hosts a parasitoid Apanteles sp. (Hymenoptera: Microgastinae) and hyperparasitoid (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) plus a generalist aphid Toxoptera odinae (Homoptera: Aphidiidae) parasitized by Lysiphlebus confusus (Hymenoptera: Aphidiinae). Both parasitoids preferred plants infested by their host over herbivore-free plants in olfactometer bioassays. Apanteles sp. and Eurytomid wasps preferred G. fusca infested plants from China populations over those from US populations in olfactometer bioassays but L. confusus wasps did not discriminate between T. odinae infested plants from China vs. US populations. Similarly, G. fusca caterpillars on China population plants were more likely to be parasitized than ones on US population plants when they were in the same cage but odds of parasitism for T. odinae did not differ for those on China vs. US population plants. These results suggest that populations from the native and introduced ranges may differ in traits that impact higher trophic levels. This may have implications for successful control of invasive plants as biocontrol agents are introduced or herbivores begin to feed on them in their introduced ranges.
POPULATION GENETIC-STRUCTURE DURING ESTIVATION IN THE SYCAMORE APHID DREPANOSIPHUM-PLATANOIDIS (HEMIPTERA, DREPANOSIPHIDAE)

Abstract:Cellulose acetate electrophoresis was used to investigate genetic variation at 15 enzyme loci in aestivating populations of the sycamore aphid, Drepanosiphum platanoidis (Schrank) (Hemiptera: Drepanosiphidae). The level of polymorphism P (over all loci) was 20%. Of the polymorphic loci, only phosphoglucomutase (PGM), with four alleles, provided consistent, interpretable banding patterns and was subsequently used to investigate population structure and gene flow at various spatial levels in southern Britain. Of 13 aphid aggregations (from single leaves) collected from the lower canopy of a selected tree, only one deviated significantly from Hardy-Weinberg expectations. Genotypic diversity for the PGM locus was generally high and genetic identity measures showed homogeneity between leaf aggregations. Aphid samples collected from eight trees in close proximity, five sites in Hertfordshire and four other sites in southern Britain, also showed homogeneity for alele and genotype frequencies and, in almost all cases, conformed to Hardy-Weinberg expectations. It was concluded that gene flow, facilitated by trivial and migratory flight, was responsible for the genetic homogeneity observed, both within and between host trees.
Effects of aphid-induced semiochemicals from cover plants on Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)

Abstract:Background: Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an important natural enemy of aphids. Plant species and plant health conditions can affect the behavior of H. axyridis. To determine plant effects on this lady beetle, we examined beetle responses to four cover crops: coriander (Coriadrum sativum L., Apiales: Apiaceae), marigold (Tagetes erecta L., Asterales: Asteraceae), sweet alyssum (Lobularia maritima L., Brassicales: Brassicaceae), and alfalfa (Medicago sativa L., Fabales: Fabaceae). Our goal was to better understand this predator's ovipositional behavior in response to different plants and its olfactory response to the aphid-induced volatiles from these plants. Results: We found that this lady beetle did not have any significant oviposition preference among the four plant species, but H. axyridis preferred to lay eggs on the lower surface of leaves, regardless of the plant species. H. axyridis females had a significant preference for aphid-infested marigolds, but were not attracted by any of the other three cover plants or marigolds without aphid damage. Compared to the uninfested marigold plants, the emission of 12 compounds significantly increased on the aphid-infested marigolds, and two of them were attractive to H. axyridis under suitable concentrations. Conclusion: H. axyridis did not show any significant oviposition preference among the four cover crops. Aphid-infested marigolds can attract H. axyridis. Indole and terpinen-4-ol mediated lady beetle attraction. These synomones have potential for manipulating populations of H. axyridis as a component of conservation biological control. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.
Effect of generalist insect herbivores on introduced Lepidium draba (Brassicaceae): implications for the enemy release hypothesis

Abstract:The enemy release hypothesis (ERH) states that decreased regulation by natural enemies allows plants to increase in distribution, abundance and vigour following their introduction into an exotic range. Invasive plants rarely escape herbivory entirely, and for hoary cress [Lepidium draba L. (Brassicaceae)] it has been demonstrated that generalist insect abundance is greater in its introduced North American range than in the native European range. We assessed the role of increased generalist herbivory on hoary cress using representatives of four important herbivore niches commonly found in the introduced range. We experimentally examined the density dependent impact of these herbivores individually and in combination on hoary cress in a series of greenhouse experiments. We found that defoliation of the oligophagous diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lep., Plutellidae) had the strongest and most consistent impact, while damage by the stem‐mining weevil Ceutorhynchus americanus Buchanan (Col., Curculionidae) tended to have the highest per capita effect. Plant response to feeding by the oligophagous crucifer flea beetle Phyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze) (Col., Chrysomelidae) was minor despite obvious feeding damage, and the impact of the polyphagous tarnished plant bug Lygus hesperus Knight (Het., Miridae) was negligible. In multiple‐species experiments, herbivore impacts were usually additive. In general, we found that hoary cress can tolerate high densities of oligophagous insect herbivory and effectively resisted attack by the polyphagous L. hesperus, but also the oligophagous C. americanus. Our results indicate that a combination of plant resistance and tolerance allows hoary cress to withstand increased generalist herbivore load in its introduced range, consistent with the predictions of the ERH.

Abstract:Abstract Ongoing environmental change affects pest populations, migration, and propensity to damage crops, but the responses to climatic drivers could vary among newly invasive and already naturalized closely related species. To compare these responses of a newly invasive aphid, Metopolophium festucae cerealium (Stroyan), with its naturalized congeneric [M. dirhodum (Walker)] and confamilial [Sitobian avenae (Fab.)], we conducted annual surveys over four years across a total of 141 winter wheat fields in the inland Pacific Northwest, USA. Key climatic factors (cumulative precipitation for each calendar year to sampling date, cumulative degree days), landscape factors (proportion of wheat and landscape diversity within the sample year), and Julian day were calculated for each sampling event, and aphid abundance by species, total aphid abundance, overall species richness, diversity, and aphid community composition were assessed. Metopolophium f. cerealium, the second most abundant species, was positively associated with precipitation, suggesting a projected increase in precipitation in winter and spring in the region could favor its establishment and expansion. Although M. dirhodum and S. avenae linearly (positively) associated with temperature, M. f. cerealium did not, indicating that continued warming may be detrimental to the species. Despite the weak impacts of landscape factors, our study indicated that more wheat generally facilitates cereal aphid abundance. Metopolophium f. cerealium abundance tended to be higher in earlier (May/early June vs. late June/July) samples when wheat crop could be vulnerable to aphid feeding. This study suggests that the new presence of M. f. cerealium has important pest management implications in the region.

Abstract:Asclepias syriaca L.is a perennial broad-leaved species native to North America. It has become established in many regions of Europe, and has spread with increasing rapidity in recent decades. Its reproductive behaviour allows this species to proliferate rapidly. The selected grasslands are located in the Carpathian Basin in Hungary, in the area of Kiskunság National Park, near Lake Kolon. In the framework of the research, in two consecutive years (2021 and 2022), and in two different seasons (spring and autumn), we examined the percentage cover of vascular plant species in the stands degraded by A. syriaca and the natural control (without A. syriaca), and their seasonal and interannual dynamics. Between the A. syriaca-degraded and natural control stands, there was no significant difference in the number of species in the spring and autumn of any of the examined years. Surprisingly, in the spring, the degraded stands were somewhat richer in vascular plant species. In autumn, the control stands had more vascular plant species, but to a lesser extent. The Shannon diversity was higher in the A. syriaca-dominated stands than in the control in all recording periods. Simpson diversity showed a similar pattern to Shannon diversity, with one exception in spring 2022. In the case of the social behaviour type, it can be clearly seen that the alien competitor (AC) species dominated in spring and autumn in both years in the stand dominated by A. syriaca. In the natural control stand, specialists (S) and competitors (C) dominated in both years and in both seasons. The negative effect of the invasive species on the number and diversity of species was presumably significantly reduced by the significant drying of the study area experienced in recent years.

Abstract:Life‐history traits affect the population genetic population structure and diversity of two acorn feeding Curculio in a fragmented landscape with mature oak stands and plots of new expanding forests. Gene flow between forest plots was lower in the poor disperser C. elephas, but its higher fecundity allowed quick growth starting from few individuals (larger populations but genetically poorer). New landscapes of expanding forests represent a good opportunity for more mobile but less fecund species to colonise new habitats and so be temporarily released from competition. Woody vegetation spread over former croplands in Europe has created new unexploited habitats for forest organisms. Their ability to colonise them and thrive depends on life‐history traits including fecundity, dormancy and dispersal ability. The effects of these traits on species distribution, abundance and community assembly have been extensively studied in fragmented landscapes. However, their consequences for genetic diversity and connectivity in local populations remain largely unknown. We investigated the genetic population structure and diversity of Curculio elephas and Curculio glandium (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), two sympatric acorn weevils with contrasting life‐history strategies, in a landscape with mature oak stands and plots of new expanding forests. Using a fragment of a mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 and nuclear DNA (80 single nucleotide polymorphisms [SNPs]), we found that gene flow between populations was significantly weaker in the poor disperser C. elephas, especially in isolated new forests. However, genetic neutrality tests did show population expansion in C. elephas, which suffers frequent population bottlenecks (probably linked to extended dormancy) and is a poor coloniser of isolated new forests. However, its greater fecundity allows it to recovery quickly if the number of reproductive individuals falls. Its populations are thus larger but genetically less diverse than those of C. glandium Within foraging guilds, the most fecund species will outcompete the others under a context of constrained dispersal. Hence, new landscapes of expanding forests represent a good opportunity for more mobile but less fecund species to colonise new habitats and so be temporarily released from competition.

Abstract:Microbial symbionts play important roles in insect biology, but their diversity, distribution, and dynamics over time across host populations are poorly understood. We surveyed the spatio-temporal distribution of bacterial symbionts in the broadly distributed and economically significant leafhopper genus , with emphasis on , using host and symbiont marker gene amplicon sequencing. The cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene data revealed no strong genetic differentiation across populations, significant levels of heteroplasmy, and multiple cases of parasitoid infections. 16S rRNA data confirmed the universal presence of the ancient nutritional endosymbionts and and a high prevalence of . Interestingly, in contrast to most previously surveyed species, in we found only occasional cases of infection with facultative endosymbionts and other bacteria. There was no significant variation in symbiont prevalence across populations, or among sampling years for the same population. Facultative endosymbionts including , , , and , were more common in other Macrosteles species. Combined, our data demonstrate that not all species show clear spatial and temporal variation in genetic structure and microbial prevalence. However, simultaneous characterization of host and symbiont marker gene amplicons in large insect collections can help understand the dynamics of host-microbe interactions.

Seasonal dominance of exotic ambrosia beetles compared to native species within deciduous and coniferous woodlots

Abstract:Ambrosia beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are among the most successful invaders of trees on a global scale. Exotic species can establish large populations within forested habitats and disperse into tree nurseries and orchards with the potential for substantial economic losses. Our objective was to assess the seasonal dominance of exotic Scolytinae compared to native species by characterizing their flight phenology, abundance and species diversity. Weekly sampling using ethanol-baited traps was conducted within deciduous and coniferous woodlots in Ohio, USA from March/April to September/October in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019. Over the course of the study, 16 native and 11 exotic species of Scolytinae were identified. No difference was detected in the number of exotic Scolytinae species or their abundance, Shannon's index ( H ), and evenness (E h ) between the coniferous vs. deciduous woodlots. On average, initial flight occurred at 188 degree days (DD) for exotic species compared to 273 DD for native species. Seasonal flight duration of exotic species averaged 49 days compared to 10 days for native species. Of the 145,882 total Scolytinae captured over the four years, only 622 were native beetles. Captures of exotic Scolytinae were 341-times greater than native species across the four trapping seasons, including captures of the exotic ambrosia beetle Xylosandrus germanus being 450-times greater than the most common native species Xyloborinus politus . These results provide insight into the invasion success of ambrosia beetles and will aid in predicting and monitoring key species.

Evaluation of the evolution of increased competitive ability (EICA) hypothesis: loss of defense against generalist but not specialist herbivores

Abstract:The evolution of increased competitive ability (EICA) hypothesis predicts that invasive plant species may escape their specialized natural enemies in their introduced range and subsequently evolve with a decrease in investment in anti-herbivore chemical defenses relative to native conspecifics. We compared the chemical profile of 10 populations of US native and 20 populations of European invasive Solidago gigantea. To test for differences in inducibility between native and invasive populations, we measured secondary chemistry in both damaged and undamaged plants. We also performed bioassays with three specialist and two generalist insect herbivores from four different feeding guilds. There was no evidence that invasive populations had reduced concentrations of sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, or short-chain hydrocarbons (SCH), although significant variation among populations was detected. Sesquiterpene and diterpene concentrations were not influenced by damage to the host plant, whereas SCH concentrations were decreased by damage for both native and invasive plants. Performance of the three specialist insects was not affected by the continental origin of the host plant. However, larval mass of the generalist caterpillar Spodoptera exigua was 37% lower on native plants compared to invasive plants. The other generalist insect, a xylem-tapping spittlebug that occurs on both continents, performed equally well on native and invasive plants. These results offer partial support for the defense predictions of the EICA hypothesis: the better growth of Spodoptera caterpillars on European plants shows that some defenses have been lost in the introduced range, even though our measures of secondary chemistry did not detect differences between continents. Our results show significant variation in chemical defenses and herbivore performance across populations on both continents and emphasize the need for analysis across a broad spatial scale and the use of multiple herbivores.
Aphid parasitism in winter wheat fields in a heterogeneous agricultural landscape

Abstract:The number, timing, and fitness of colonizing parasitoids in fields of ephemeral crops often depend on factors external to the fields. We investigated cereal aphid parasitism in 23 winter wheat fields using sentinel plants infested with bird cherry-oat aphids, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and we investigated the effect of parasitoids on cereal aphid population growth using exclusion and parasitoid-accessible cages infested with bird cherry-oat aphids. Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Aphelinus nigritus (Howard) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), and Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), in decreasing order of abundance, parasitized R. padi on sentinel plants. The mean percent parasitism in parasitoid-accessible cages was 5.2% in autumn and 35.0% in spring. Aphid population intensity was greater in complete exclusion than in parasitoid-accessible cages. Measures of landscape composition and configuration were quantified, and aphid parasitism in autumn by L. testaceipes and A. nigritus was positively associated with % landcover by summer crops and patch density. Parasitism by both species was negatively associated with contagion and % woodlands. Parasitism during spring was positively associated with % grassland and fractal dimension and negatively associated with % canola. The number of braconid mummies per sentinel plant was positively correlated to the number of braconid mummies on wheat stems from parasitoid-accessible cages. Results indicate that cereal aphid mortality caused by parasitoids and their ability to exert effective biological control is related to landscape structure. Comparing this study to an earlier study in the same agroecosystem demonstrated temporal stability of the landscape influence on aphid parasitism by L. testaceipes in winter wheat.
Direct Effect of Cannibalism and Intraguild Predation in Menochilus sexmaculatus (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae)1

Abstract:Menochilus sexmaculatusF. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a generalist predator with potential as a biological control candidate for suppressing many insect pests, including the cotton mealybug, Phenacoccus solenopsis Tinsley (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae). However, the potential control capacity of M. sexmaculatus on P. solenopsis may depend not only on its fitness and predatory efficacy, but also on the consequences of both conspecific and heterospecific interactions with other individuals that share the same resource. This study investigated the aggressiveness and vulnerability of different life stages of M. sexmaculatus when encountering various stages of M. sexmaculatus or Harmonia axyridis (Pallas). The results showed that M. sexmaculatus could act as predator and/or prey with the presence of conspecific and heterospecific ladybird beetles. The success of predation is affected by the ladybird beetle life stage and, in most cases, young stages of the ladybird beetles were most susceptible to relatively older life stages of ladybird beetles. Predation between M. sexmaculatus/H. axyridis larvae of the same developmental stage was always asymmetric, favoring H. axyridis. Moreover, M. sexmaculatus exhibited intensive aggressiveness toward their own species over heterospecific individuals, but was more vulnerable to H. axyridis than to M. sexmaculatus individuals. Overall, H. axyridis could negatively affect the population densities of M. sexmaculatus by its high aggressiveness and low vulnerability. However, because our study was conducted in an oversimplified and confined area, more research should be conducted under more realistic conditions to explore the impacts of H. axyridis on the population dynamics of M. sexmaculatus.

Abstract:The multicolored Asian lady beetle ( Harmonia axyridis , H. axyridis , Coleoptera, and Coccinellidae) is an effective biocontrol agent against agricultural pests. Previous studies have suggested that amount, type, and the quality of food can directly affect the biological aspects of H. axyridis. In this study, we investigated the influence of the food sources ( Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, and artificial diets) on the gut microbiota diversity and the biology, reproductive variables, and population growth indicators of H. axyridis. Three kinds of diets were considered in this study: (1) HY: the adult of A. pisum Harris (HY group); (2) HM: the adult of D. citri Kuwayama (HM group); (3) HR: artificial diets prepared by blending a portion of fresh homogenized pork liver (15 g), honey (3 g), distilled water (35 ml) (HR group). We found that gut microbiota composition and diversity and the biological parameters differed when H. axyridis was fed with different diets. The abundance of Enterobacteriaceae was the highest in the HM group, followed by HY group, and was the lowest in the HR group. The abundance of Staphylococcaceae was highest in the HR group. Among the gut fungi, Davidiellaceae and Wallemiaceae were the highest and lowest in the HY group; Incertae_sedis were the major gut fungi in the HR group. Meanwhile, the changes of biological parameters may be correlated with the changes of Streptococcaceae abundance, Micrococcaceae abundance, Staphylococcaceae abundance, and Enterobacteriaceae abundance in responds to diet changes. To sum up, these data suggest that different diets can influence the changes in adult H. axyridis gut microbiota, consequently affecting the biological parameters.

Abstract:Illinoia liriodendri (Monell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is an Eastern North American native aphid species that infests ornamental tulip trees, Liriodendron tulipifera L. (Magnoliales: Magnoliaceae), in many localities of Spain and southern Europe. This is a comprehensive three-year study on the biology and ecology of the aphid, where its life cycle, phenology, population dynamic trends, comfort damages, natural enemy complex and its potential to control aphid populations have been investigated for the first time in Europe. The monoecic-holocyclic annual cycle of I. liriodendri has been demonstrated. The highest infestation levels were recorded in May and June, but infestation severity varied among localities. No clear trend regarding the effect of planting site (pit vs. ground) on aphid abundance was observed. A strong positive relationship between the aphid infestation severity and the honeydew dripping was recorded. There was a wide complex of natural enemies associated with the aphid. Coccinellidae were the most abundant predators (< 95%) and showed a positive numerical response to the aphid infestation. Several parasitoid species (mainly Hymenoptera: Aphidiinae and Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) were found parasitizing I. liriodendri in Spain. The role of natural enemies as agents for controlling the aphid populations is discussed.

Abstract:Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Erebidae) is an invasive alien species that is widely distributed in northern China. H. cunea now occurs for the first time in the subtropical areas of China. Despite the importance of identifying oviposition host plants to control the spread of H. cunea, it is not clear whether H. cunea has a new oviposition preference for plant hosts in the new habitat after invading the subtropical region. At the same time, whether the presence of new plant volatiles of new hosts in new habitats influences the oviposition host preference of H. cunea has not been studied. In this study, we investigated the oviposition host plant preferences of H. cunea in the subtropical region of China. In the presence of multiple potential host plants, we found, for the first time, that H. cunea preferred Carya illinoinensis, Morus alba, and Carya cathayensis for oviposition. Through the effects on plant volatiles and on the oviposition, ten volatile compounds with significant differences in relative abundance between five plants with different fitness levels were significantly correlated with the oviposition preference of females. Cis-Hex-3-en-1-ol, (E)-3-Hexen-1-ol, cis-3-Hexenyl acetate 1, and 3-Pentadiene,4-methyl, had a significant positive correlation with the adult oviposition preference. Our results provide an important research basis for the study of green prevention and control strategies of subtropical H. cunea in China.

Abstract:Abstract Under natural conditions, prey resources may fluctuate considerably in space and time; and predators are continuously faced with challenges of resource availability and use. In this study, effects of fluctuations (scarce/optimal/abundant) in biomass of pea aphid ( Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris); Hemiptera: Aphididae) during rearing and experimental conditions on certain predatory attributes (consumption rate/conversion, efficiency/growth rate) of two sympatric aphidophagous Coccinellidae (Coleoptera) were evaluated. Results revealed significant influence of rearing conditions on conversion efficiency and growth rate; and experimental conditions on all three predation attributes of Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Larvae/adults of M. sexmaculatus had similar consumption rates per rearing condition, but exhibited highest and lowest consumption rates when abruptly shifted to abundant and scarce prey experimental conditions. Further, scarce prey reared larvae/adults of M. sexmaculatus displayed highest conversion efficiency and growth rate on optimal/abundant prey experimental condition(s). However, all three predation attributes of larvae/adults of Propylea dissecta (Mulsant) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were influenced substantially by both the rearing and experimental conditions; and scarce prey reared larvae/adults exhibited highest predation attributes on optimal/abundant prey experimental condition(s). Moreover, predation attributes of M. sexmaculatus were higher than P. dissecta on the three experimental conditions. Therefore, this study suggests that M. sexmaculatus has a better compensatory ability to overcome prey resource fluctuation than P. dissecta .

Abstract:Xylosandrus crassiusculus is an invasive ambrosia beetle comprising two differentiated genetic lineages, named cluster 1 and cluster 2. These lineages invaded different parts of the world at different periods of time. We tested whether they exhibited different climatic niches using Schoener's D and Hellinger's I indices and modeled their current potential geographical ranges using the Maxent algorithm. The resulting models were projected according to future and recent past climate datasets for Europe and the Mediterranean region. The future projections were performed for the periods 2041–2070 and 2071–2100 using 3 SSPs and 5 GCMs. The genetic lineages exhibited different climate niches. Parts of Europe, the Americas, Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and Oceania were evaluated as suitable for cluster 1. Parts of Europe, South America, Central and South Africa, Asia, and Oceania were considered as suitable for cluster 2. Models projection under future climate scenarios indicated a decrease in climate suitability in Southern Europe and an increase in North Eastern Europe in 2071–2100. Most of Southern and Western Europe was evaluated as already suitable for both clusters in the early twentieth century. Our results show that large climatically suitable regions still remain uncolonized and that climate change will affect the geographical distribution of climatically suitable areas. Climate conditions in Europe were favorable in the twentieth century, suggesting that the recent colonization of Europe is rather due to an increase in propagule pressure via international trade than to recent environmental changes.

Abstract:Herbivory-induced responses in plants can both negatively affect subsequently colonizing herbivores and mitigate the effect of herbivory on the host. However, it is still less known whether plants exhibit specific responses to specialist and generalist herbivores in non-secondary metabolite traits and how specificity to specialists and generalists differs between invasive and native plant populations. We exposed an invasive plant, Alternanthera philoxeroides, to Agasicles hygrophila (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae; specialist), Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae; generalist), manual clipping, or application of exogenous jasmonic acid and examined both the specificity of elicitation in traits of fitness (e.g., aboveground biomass), morphology (e.g., root:shoot ratio), and chemistry (e.g., C/N ratio and lignin), and specificity of effect on the subsequent performance of A. hygrophila and S. litura. Then, we assessed variation of the specificity between invasive and native populations (USA and Argentina, respectively). The results showed S. litura induced higher branching intensity and specific leaf area but lower C/N ratio than A. hygrophila, whereas A. hygrophila induced higher trichome density than S. litura. The negative effect of induction on subsequent larval growth was greater for S. litura than for A. hygrophila. Invasive populations had a weaker response to S. litura than to A. hygrophila in triterpenoid saponins and C/N ratio, while native populations responded similarly to these two herbivores. The specific effect on the two herbivores feeding on induced plants did not vary between invasive and native populations. Overall, we demonstrate specificity of elicitation to specialist and generalist herbivores in non-secondary metabolite traits, and that the generalist is more susceptible to induction than the specialist. Furthermore, chemical responses specific to specialist and generalist herbivores only exist in the invasive populations, consistent with an evolutionary change in specificity in the invasive populations.
