Abstract:Optical fiber communication systems play an important role in broadband signal transmissions, where the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmissions greatly degrade the transmission performance and limit the fiber capacity and reach. This paper analyzes and compensates for the nonlinear dynamics in the long-haul optical fiber transmission with the delay-based optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) scheme, which provides benefits like time-adaptive tracking, low-complexity and hardware implementation potentials. The generalization of the analysis and compensation schemes from the traditional amplitude-modulated PAM signal to the amplitude-phase-modulated QAM signal is achieved by signal preprocessing. In the numerical study, the proposed RC-based fiber dynamics compensation scheme, with fiber reach from 1400km to 3000km, shows considerable performance with the digital backpropagation scheme, which is always used as the benchmark for nonlinear compensation of long-haul fiber transmissions. The realization complexity is much reduced with the RC-based schemes, which has provided a new dawn for optics-based nonlinear analysis and compensations.

Abstract:We investigate the suppression of Kerr nonlinearities by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a fiber transmission system without power symmetry by including all the manifestations of the Kerr nonlinearities. We found that OPC cannot completely compensate for all Kerr nonlinearities in absence of power symmetry, and some nonlinearities may become even worse if one of the nonlinearities is fully compensated. Therefore, it is necessary to optimize the compensation system to eliminate the most dominating nonlinearity. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the interplay of various kinds of nonlinearities. The need of proper design for transmission systems to suppress the dominating nonlinear effect is shown when all manifestations of Kerr nonlinearity are not compensated simultaneously.

Abstract:Kerr nonlinearity in long distance fiber-optic link imposes a fundamental limitation to the capacity of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communication systems. Solving the inverse-propagating nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) is in principle a fundamental methodology to mitigate fiber nonlinear impairments. However, solving multi-channel coupled NLSE is too complexed to be implemented commercially. It is of great importance to compensate for nonlinear distortions in high baud-rate WDM systems based on the information of one single target channel. In this article, we experimentally study fiber nonlinearity mitigation in an 8 × 512 Gb/s (64Gbaud) polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) Nyquist-WDM system with 960 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) loop transmission. The digital back-propagation (DBP) algorithm based on the target channel is applied, which can compensate for intra-channel nonlinearity. The inter-channel nonlinearity of cross phase modulation (XPM) induces nonlinear polarization scattering and nonlinear phase noise, which are partially correlated over adjacent pulses in high baud-rate systems. We propose an advanced nonlinear polarization crosstalk canceller (NPCC) with a novel decision feedback (DF) update strategy that is called the DF-NPCC, which incorporates the iterative process of the least mean square (LMS) algorithm and can thus mitigate the correlated nonlinear polarization crosstalk and nonlinear phase noise. Through nonlinearity mitigation, the DBP together with the DF-NPCC can achieve a 0.77 dB Q 2 factor promotion. The DF-NPCC can suppress the remaining nonlinear distortions after the single channel DBP, which corresponds to a 0.36 dB Q 2 factor improvement due to inter-channel nonlinear mitigation. Our work indicates XPM distortions can be mitigated with low complexity digital signal processing such as the DF-NPCC based on the single channel information, which provides an attractive solution to compensate inter-channel fiber nonlinearity in high baud-rate Nyquist-WDM systems.

Abstract:Meeting the ever-growing information rate demands has become of utmost importance for optical communication systems. However, it has proven to be a challenging task due to the presence of Kerr effects, which have largely been regarded as a major bottleneck for enhancing the achievable information rates in modern optical communications. In this work, the optimisation and performance of digital nonlinearity compensation are discussed for maximising the achievable information rates in spectrally-efficient optical fibre communication systems. It is found that, for any given target information rate, there exists a trade-off between modulation format and compensated bandwidth to reduce the computational complexity requirement of digital nonlinearity compensation.

Abstract:Nyquist-spaced transmission and digital signal processing have proved effective in maximising the spectral efficiency and reach of optical communication systems. In these systems, Kerr nonlinearity determines the performance limits, and leads to spectral broadening of the signals propagating in the fibre. Although digital nonlinearity compensation was validated to be promising for mitigating Kerr nonlinearities, the impact of spectral broadening on nonlinearity compensation has never been quantified. In this paper, the performance of multi-channel digital back-propagation (MC-DBP) for compensating fibre nonlinearities in Nyquist-spaced optical communication systems is investigated, when the effect of signal spectral broadening is considered. It is found that accounting for the spectral broadening effect is crucial for achieving the best performance of DBP in both single-channel and multi-channel communication systems, independent of modulation formats used. For multi-channel systems, the degradation of DBP performance due to neglecting the spectral broadening effect in the compensation is more significant for outer channels. Our work also quantified the minimum bandwidths of optical receivers and signal processing devices to ensure the optimal compensation of deterministic nonlinear distortions.

The Effect of Optical Phase Conjugation on Inter- and Intra-Channel Nonlinearities in Ultrahigh-Speed Transmission Systems

Abstract:We demonstrate that all the inter- and intra-channel nonlinear impairments can be eliminated simultaneously by optical phase conjugation (OPC) in a power-symmetry system. However, for practical systems without power-symmetry, it is found that the effects of OPC on various nonlinearities are different in the same link. Even some nonlinearities are suppressed and some are enhanced. Therefore, optimizing the transmission link with OPC to suppress the dominant nonlinearity is demanded. By using 1-km-long highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and tuning the pump wavelength near the zero dispersion wavelength of the HNLF, we experimentally generate the phase conjugation of the dispersed ~300 fs pulses. OPC with conversion efficiency of about -16 dB and conversion bandwidth of about 38 nm is obtained.

Abstract:Current research efforts are focussed on overcoming the apparent limits of communication in single mode optical fibre resulting from distortion due to fibre nonlinearity. It has been experimentally demonstrated that this Kerr nonlinearity limit is not a fundamental limit; thus it is pertinent to review where the fundamental limits of optical communications lie, and direct future research on this basis. This paper details recently presented results. The work herein briefly reviews the intrinsic limits of optical communication over standard single mode optical fibre (SMF), and shows that the empirical limits of silica fibre power handling and transceiver design both introduce a practical upper bound to the capacity of communication using SMF, on the order of 1 Pbit/s. Transmission rates exceeding 1 Pbit/s are shown to be possible, however, with currently available optical fibres, attempts to transmit beyond this rate by simply increasing optical power will lead to an asymptotically zero fractional increase in capacity.

Abstract:Optical communication systems represent the backbone of modern communication networks. Since their deployment, different fiber technologies have been used to deal with optical fiber impairments such as dispersion-shifted fibers and dispersion-compensation fibers. In recent years, thanks to the introduction of coherent detection based systems, fiber impairments can be mitigated using digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. Coherent systems are used in the current 100 Gbps wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) standard technology. They allow the increase of spectral efficiency by using multi-level modulation formats, and are combined with DSP techniques to combat the linear fiber distortions. In addition to linear impairments, the next generation 400 Gbps/1 Tbps WDM systems are also more affected by the fiber nonlinearity due to the Kerr effect. At high input power, the fiber nonlinear effects become more important and their compensation is required to improve the transmission performance. Several approaches have been proposed to deal with the fiber nonlinearity. In this paper, after a brief description of the Kerr-induced nonlinear effects, a survey on the fiber nonlinearity compensation (NLC) techniques is provided. We focus on the well-known NLC techniques and discuss their performance, as well as their implementation and complexity. An extension of the inter-subcarrier nonlinear interference canceler approach is also proposed. A performance evaluation of the well-known NLC techniques and the proposed approach is provided in the context of Nyquist and super-Nyquist superchannel systems.

Abstract:In this paper, we review different designs of distributed Raman amplifiers which have been proposed to minimize the signal power profile asymmetry in mid-link optical phase conjugation systems. We demonstrate how the symmetrical signal power profiles along the fiber can be achieved using various distributed Raman amplification techniques in the single-span and more realistic multi-span circumstances. In addition, we show the theoretically predicted results of the Kerr nonlinear product reduction with different Raman techniques in mid-link optical phase conjugator systems, and then in-line/long-haul transmission performance using numerical simulations.

Abstract:Achievable information rates of optical communication systems are inherently limited by nonlinear distortions due to the Kerr effect occurred in optical fibres. These nonlinear impairments become more significant for communication systems with larger transmission bandwidths, closer channel spacing and higher-order modulation formats. In this paper, the efficacy of nonlinearity compensation techniques, including both digital back-propagation and optical phase conjugation, for enhancing achievable information rates in lumped EDFA- and distributed Raman-amplified fully-loaded C -band systems is investigated considering practical transceiver limitations. The performance of multiple modulation formats, such as dual-polarisation quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK), dual-polarisation 16 -ary quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-16QAM), DP-64QAM and DP-256QAM, has been studied in C -band systems with different transmission distances. It is found that the capabilities of both nonlinearity compensation techniques for enhancing achievable information rates strongly depend on signal modulation formats as well as target transmission distances.
RM-0301 Toward Specifying a Construct of Reasoning

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper was to work, within the framework of construct validity theory, toward the delineation of a construct of reasoning. In so doing, we address reasoning, broadly conceived. We make no claim to have considered every aspect of this complex construct. The outcome of our deliberations is a list of elements that, we believe, are useful to consider in any attempt to specify the facets of a construct of reasoning ability. As we note, befitting such an important construct, there have been many attempts to articulate its (multifaceted) nature, some of which are discussed here. Given the variety of ways in which reasoning has been characterized, however, we offer no single definition or comprehensive vision of reasoning. Rather, we attempt only to set forth some of the salient features of reasoning that, to us, seem worthy of consideration and possibly of incorporation in any construct statement of reasoning. Our main conclusion is that there is no single construct of reasoning. Instead, any of several formulations may be equally useful and informative depending on the particular context and the user’s purpose. We hope, though, that our reflections provide some of the “grist” that users may need in order to specify a construct of reasoning that meets their requirements.

Abstract:Optical networks form an integral part of the world-wide communication infrastructure and nowadays over 95% of data traffic is carried over fibres. Erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) and Raman amplifiers have made it possible to extend the usable fibre bandwidth to increase the achievable capacity of optical communications in past decades to meet the ever-growing information rate demands. However, these amplification technologies are now viewed as limiting the accessible optical spectrum to ~5 THz and ~10 - 15 THz, respectively. Currently, the presence of Kerr effects in fibre channels has been largely regarded as the major bottleneck for enhancing achievable information rates of optical communications. Signal performance degradations due to fibre nonlinearities are more severe in the systems utilising larger transmission bandwidths, closer channel spacing and higher-order modulation formats. In this work, we will study the impact and compensation of Kerr effects to analyse the performance of long-haul optical fibre communication systems using EDFAs and Raman amplifiers. Achievable information rates of such ultra-wideband optical transmission systems will be discussed considering nonlinearity compensation and probabilistic shaping techniques.

Abstract:Optical fiber networks form the major part of the modern telecommunication infrastructure and are carrying over 95% of the Internet digital data. The increasing demand for higher data rates has promoted the development of higher-order modulation formats, denser wavelength multiplexing and more powerful signal processing. With the entire suppression of the chromatic dispersion, the polarization mode dispersion and the laser phase noise using digital signal processing, Kerr fiber nonlinearities become the main capacity barrier for optical communication systems, and digital back-propagation is generally applied to overcome such distortions. Kerr effects also result in the broadening of spectra of signals propagating in optical fibers, owing to intra- and interchannel nonlinear interactions. This report shows that the spectral broadening effect is crucial for achieving an optimal performance of the digital back-propagation in wideband optical transmission systems.

Abstract:Digital backpropagation (DBP) is a commonly used method to compensate for the nonlinear impairments of optical fiber channels in the electrical domain, offering a new approach to enhancing the data capacity without affecting the system performance. However, due to the repeated Fourier transform and inverse transform of the split-step Fourier method (SSFM), the complexity of DBP algorithm has increased significantly. In this paper, a correlated backpropagation algorithm with the separation of the walk-off effect is developed, which improves the computational step and significantly reduces the complexity of the algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that in a 6-channel PDM-16QAM system, the proposed hybrid algorithm reduces the computational complexity by 73.96 % compared to the traditional DBP algorithm for an 800 km transmission.

Abstract:Compensation of Kerr nonlinearity-induced distortions has been shown to allow for increasing transmission rate and reach, with optical compensation techniques particularly attractive for broadband wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) scenarios. However, they normally require additional devices within the link, which is particularly challenging for already deployed systems, and even more so for unrepeatered transmission. In this work, we focus on providing lumped optical nonlinearity suppression, either at the transmitter or at the receiver side, based on optical phase conjugation (OPC). The theory to design scaled-down OPC compensation modules is derived, and it allows to move beyond the standard mid-link OPC approach and to explore compensation modules with fibers types not directly linked to the dispersion properties of the transmission link. This design method is then validated both through numerical investigations and experimental demonstrations for a number of systems with a varying degree of complexity. Ultimately, significant performance improvement is shown by employing short OPC-based compensation structures which are carefully designed to match much longer transmission links.

Abstract:Fiber nonlinearity mitigation is a crucial technology for extending transmission reach and increasing channel capacity in high-baud rate wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems. In this work, we propose a novel, to the best of our knowledge, architecture that combines learned modified digital back-propagation (L-MDBP) to compensate for intra-channel nonlinearity and a two-stage decision directed least mean square (DDLMS) adaptive equalizer to mitigate inter-channel nonlinearity. By leveraging globally optimized model parameters and adaptive channel estimation, the proposed scheme achieves superior performance and lower computation complexity compared with conventional DBP. Specifically, in an 8 x 64 Gbaud 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) experimental system over 1600 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), our approach shows a 0.30-dB Q2-factor improvement and a complexity reduction of 82.3% compared with DBP with 8 steps per span (SPS). Furthermore, we enhance the adaptability of the architecture by introducing an online transfer learning (TL) technique, which requires only 2% of initial training epochs. & COPY; 2023 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:Abstract Optical communication systems represent the backbone of modern long-haul communication networks. Nonlinear impairments such as the Kerr effect pose threat and deteriorate transmission in long-haul optical communication systems. At high launch powers, nonlinear effects become more important and their compensation is entailed to improve the transmission performance. In this paper, one of the major nonlinear effects of four waves mixing (FWM) is addressed using a theoretical model and validated through simulation in Optisystem. Two mechanisms with and without dispersion variation are investigated. The impact of FWM is investigated in terms of various values of launch power. The transmission performances of the proposed model are evaluated on the basis of bit error rate, optical signal to noise ratio, and quality factor using key parameters of effective area, nonlinear refractive index, nonlinear dispersion, and linear dispersion.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we propose a low-complexity fiber nonlinearity impairments compensation scheme based on nonlinear step size and modified adaptive digital back propagation. To verify the feasibility of the proposed algorithm, we construct a simulation system of single channel 12.5 GBaud polarization division multiplexing 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM) optical transmission system. Comprehensive numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can not only search for the fiber nonlinear coefficient adaptively, but also has the characteristics of high performance and low complexity.

Abstract:Orthogonal transmission with frequency division multiplexing technique is investigated for next generation optical communication systems. Coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing (SCFDM) schemes are compared in combination with polarization-division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) or 16-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) formats. Multi-granularity transmission with flexible bandwidth can be realized through ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UDWDM) based on the orthogonal technique. Abstract:In this work, we will derive, validate, and analyze the theoretical description of nonlinear Kerr effects resulting from various transmission systems that deploy single or multiple optical phase conjugators (OPCs). We will show that the nonlinear Kerr compensation can be achieved, with various efficiencies, in both lumped and distributed Raman transmission systems. The results show that first order distributed Raman systems are superior to the discretely amplified systems in terms of the nonlinear Kerr compensation efficiency that a mid-link OPC can achieve. Also, we will show that the multi-OPC approach will diminish the nonlinearity compensation efficiency in any system as it will act as periodic dispersion compensators.
