Abstract:Intrinsically, detrimental defects accumulating at the surface and grain boundaries limit both the performance and stability of perovskite solar cells. Small molecules and bulkier polymers with functional groups are utilized to passivate these ionic defects but usually suffer from volatility and precipitation issues, respectively. Here, starting from the addition of small monomers in the PbI2 precursor, a polymerization-assisted grain growth strategy is introduced in the sequential deposition method. With a polymerization process triggered during the PbI2 film annealing, the bulkier polymers formed will be adhered to the grain boundaries, retaining the previously established interactions with PbI2. After perovskite formation, the polymers anchored on the boundaries can effectively passivate undercoordinated lead ions and reduce the defect density. As a result, a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 23.0% is obtained, together with a prolonged lifetime where 85.7% and 91.8% of the initial PCE remain after 504 h continuous illumination and 2208 h shelf storage, respectively.

Abstract:Methylammonium lead trihalide perovskites are attracting intensive interest due to its high photovoltaic performance, low cost and one-step solution processability. Since the morphology of the perovskite thin films play the central role on the cell performance, a plethora of methods have been developed to fabricate uniform perovskite film. Herein, we demonstrate that an innovative approach by applying mixed lead salts (PbI2 + PbCl2) to facilitate reproducible fabrication of compact perovskite thin film. It is proposed that rapid reaction kinetics of PbI2 with MAI enables preformation of perovskite within the intermidiate film matrix, working as homogeneously located domains for squential growth of the PbCl2-derived perovskite. The as-prepared perovskite film exhibited a overall textured crystal morphology and superior compactness, which enables excellent light absorption and long-time preservation of photogenerated charge carriers and therefore exhibits 11% efficiency in planar-structured solar cells. The annealing testing shows the film also possesses very stable morphology upon long-time heating, indicative of the insensitivity of our new protocol to the preparation condition and also the promising thermal stability of its based solar cells. The simplicity of the one-step solution-processing and the high morphology stability of the as-prepared perovskite film endow this mixing lead salts method with feasibility of the large-scale fabrication.

Abstract:All-inorganic CsPbI 3 perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with efficiencies exceeding 20% are ideal candidates for application in large-scale tandem solar cells. However, there are still two major obstacles hindering their scale-up: (i) the inhomogeneous solid-state synthesis process and (ii) the inferior stability of the photoactive CsPbI 3 black phase. Here, we have used a thermally stable ionic liquid, bis (triphenylphosphine)iminium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([PPN][TFSI]), to retard the high-temperature solid-state reaction between Cs 4 PbI 6 and DMAPbI 3 [dimethylammonium (DMA)], which enables the preparation of high-quality and large-area CsPbI 3 films in the air. Because of the strong Pb-O contacts, [PPN][TFSI] increases the formation energy of superficial vacancies and prevents the undesired phase degradation of CsPbI 3 . The resulting PSCs attained a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.64% (certified 19.69%) with long-term operational stability over 1000 hours. A record efficiency of 16.89% for an all-inorganic perovskite solar module was achieved, with an active area of 28.17 cm 2 .

Abstract:Solution-processed polycrystalline perovskite films contribute critically to the high photovoltaic performance of perovskite-based solar cells (PSCs). The inevitable electronic trap states at grain boundaries and intrinsic defects such as metallic lead (Pb0) and halide vacancies in perovskite films cause serious carrier recombination loss. Furthermore, the film can easily decompose into PbI2 in a moist atmosphere. Here, we introduce a simple strategy, through a small increase in methylammonium iodide (CH3NH3I, MAI), molar proportion (5%), for perovskite fabrication in ambient air with ∼50% relative humidity. Analysis of the morphology and crystallography demonstrates that excess MAI significantly promotes grain growth without decomposition. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy shows that no metallic Pb0 exists in the perovskite film and the I/Pb ratio is improved. A time-resolved photoluminescence measurement indicates efficient suppression of non-radiative recombination in the perovskite layer. As a result, the device yields improved power conversion efficiency from 14.06% to 18.26% with reduced hysteresis and higher stability under AM1.5G illumination (100 mW cm−2). This work strongly provides a feasible and low-cost way to develop highly efficient PSCs in ambient air.
Single-step Chemical Vapor Deposition of Methyl Ammonium Lead Halide Perovskite for p-i-n Solar Cells

Abstract:Metal halide perovskite solar cells being one of the fastest emerging technologies for renewable energy still has to become more industry friendly in a way that will allow using it for thin film modules or tandems with conventional silicon devices. The simplest way to achieve this is to use chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique for tandem production. In this work, we show a method for a single step production of MAPbI3 films in a simple two-zone CVD reactor from lead diacetate and methyl-ammonium iodide powders. Obtained films show highly ordered cubic MAPbI3 phase with a thickness of 400-500 um, good photoluminescence response and absorption band edge similar to spin-coated film. We used those films to produce p-i-n solar cells with ITO/NiO/MAPbI3/C60/Cu structure. The best cell showed negligible 0.23 % PCE right after the manufacturing but significantly improved to 5.5 % PCE after 8 hours of storage in the dark. The main limiting factor affecting the efficiency is low current density, which we attribute to non-optimized growth conditions; however, our approach is a first step to a single step CVD deposition of MAPbI3 on any type of substrates including texturized silicon subcells for better overall efficiency.

Abstract:High-quality perovskite films are predominantly prepared by anti-solvent assisted spin-coating method. However, small device size and narrow operation window limit their applications in practical and scalable production. Here, a spontaneously supersaturated nucleation strategy is developed to fabricate high-quality perovskite films without any antisolvents. The rapid precipitation behavior of the precursor solutions could be triggered by the volatilization of methylamine ethanol at the initial film formation stage, forming uniform and compact intermediate phase films. Mirror-like large area (10 cm x 10 cm) methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPbI(3)) perovskite films with micrometer-sized grains can be achieved by phase transition via annealing. The average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.4% is achieved for 0.1 cm(2) perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The 1 cm(2) device shows a PCE of 17.57% and retains 96.8% after aging for 39 days in the air with a relative humidity of 5-30%. The perovskite module based on the perovskite films prepared by our strategy exhibits a PCE of 13.13%. The perovskite film fabrication method developed in this work shows high reproducibility of the fabrication process due to the spontaneous nucleation process. Meanwhile, it also exhibits significant potential in the application of scalable solution processing deposition techniques toward the commercialization of PSCs.

Abstract:Despite rapid advancements in the photovoltaic efficiencies of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), their operational stability remains a significant challenge for commercialization. This instability mainly arises from light‐induced halide ion migration and subsequent oxidation into iodine (I2). The situation is exacerbated when considering the heat effects at elevated temperatures, leading to the volatilization of I2 and resulting in irreversible device degradation. To the end, a thiol‐contained reducing agent, mercaptoethylammonium iodide (ESAI), has been incorporated into the perovskite film. This addition aims to prevent the oxidation of iodide ions, thereby suppressing the light‐induced degradation pathway of FAPbI3→FAI+PbI2. Additionally, the formation of a thiol‐disulfide/I−‐I2 redox pair within the perovskite film provides a dynamic mechanism for the continuous reduction of I2 under light and thermal stresses, facilitating the healing of iodine‐induced degradations. This approach significantly enhances the operational stability of PSCs. Under the ISOS‐L‐3 testing protocol (MPP tracking in an environment with relative humidity of ∼50% at ∼65 °C), the treated PSCs maintain 97% of their original PCE after 300 hours of aging. In contrast, control devices exhibit almost complete degradation, primarily due to rapid thermal‐induced I2 volatilization. These results demonstrate a promising strategy to overcome critical stability challenges in PSCs, particularly in scenarios involving thermal effects. This article is protected by copyright. Amine‐releasable Mediator In‐situ Repair Perovskites for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Residual lead iodide (PbI2) is deemed to a double-edged sword in perovskite film as small amounts of PbI2 are beneficial to the photovoltaic performance, but excessive will cause degradation of photovoltaic performance and stability. Herein, an in-situ repair strategy has been developed by introducing amine-releasable mediator (methylammonium pyridine-2-carboxylic, MAPyA) to eliminate over-residual PbI2 and regulate the crystal quality of perovskite film. Notably, MAPyA can be partially decomposed into methylamine (MA) gas and pyridine-2-carboxylic (PyA) during high temperature annealing. The released MA can locally form liquid intermediate phase, facilitating the reconstruction of perovskite microcrystals and residual PbI2. Moreover, the leftover PyA is confirmed to effectively passivate the uncoordinated lead ions in final perovskite film. Based upon this, superior perovskite film with optimized crystal structure and holistic negligible PbI2 is acquired. The assembled device realizes outstanding efficiency of 24.06%, and exhibits a remarkable operational stability that maintaining 87% of its origin efficiency after continuous illumination for 1480 h. And the unencapsulated MAPyA-treated devices present significant uplift in humidity stability (maintaining ~ 93% of the initial efficiency over 1500 h, 50-60% relative humidity). Furthermore, the further optimization of this strategy with nanoimprint technology proves its superiority in the amplificative preparation for perovskite films.

Abstract:Recently, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials have drawn great attention for their outstanding performance in high-efficiency solar cells. Successful synthesis has been realized either in solution-based chemical deposition or vapor deposition. However, conflicts have never ceased among quality control, growth rate, process complexity, and instrument requirement, which have limited their development toward real applications. In this work, the first electrochemical fabrication of perovskite toward high-efficiency and scalable perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is established. The morphology and crystallization of the CH3NH3PbI3 film can be effectively controlled by simply modulating a few physical parameters. A detailed study on its optoelectronic properties reveals significantly improved film quality and interfacial conditions. Aided by this, the total process does not require standard annealing, which greatly reduces the total growth time from hours to minutes. Up to now, an efficiency of 15.65% has been achieved in planar PSCs under 1 sun AM 1.5 condition, with small hysteresis and efficiency loss under longtime exposure to air. Moreover, high efficiency (10.45%) can be easily attained for large cells (2 cm(2)). This result will hopefully facilitate research for applicable high-efficiency PSCs and other multicomponent materials as well.

Abstract:Suppressing nucleation over large areas Although formamidinium-based lead iodide (PbI 2 ) perovskites have a favorable bandgap and good thermal stability, the difficulty in controlling nucleation makes it difficult to grow high-quality, large-area films compared with methylammonium counterparts. Bu et al. show that adding N -methyl-2-pyrrolidone to the perovskite precursors forms an adduct with PbI 2 that promotes the formation of the desired black α-phase at room temperature. The addition of potassium hexafluorophosphate eliminated hysteresis by passivating interfacial defects and promoted long-term thermal stability at 85°C in unencapsulated devices. Abstract:Obtaining a perovskite light-absorbing layer with good crystallization, low defect concentration, good stability, and well-matched energy levels is critical to obtaining high-efficiency perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, a hybrid PSC with a graded band gap is explored using MAPbBr3 (MA = CH3NH3) and MAPbBr0.9I2.1 quantum dots (QDs) as component cells. We have creatively designed a solar cell device with a double-QD structure [indium tin oxide (ITO)/SnO2/perovskite:MAPbBr3 QDs/MAPbBr0.9I2.1 QDs/Spiro-OMeTAD/Au]. A better crystal film of the perovskite absorption layer can be obtained because the MAPbBr3 QDs are doped in an antisolvent, which induces nucleation and growth in the polycrystalline perovskite. In addition, we expect that digestive ripening occurred in the crystallization, and the oleic acid ligands on the surface of the QDs disintegrate during the doping process and transfer to the surface of the perovskite absorption layer finally; it follows that the hydrophobicity and stability of the perovskite film are greatly enhanced. Moreover, a thin film of MAPbBr0.9I2.1 QDs is introduced between the perovskite absorption layer and the hole layer, acting as an energy-level ladder, which leads to well-matched energy levels, an increase in fill factor (FF), and an enhanced hole transport capability. In particular, the mechanism of the crystallization process involving the effect of oleic acid ligands on the interior and surface of the perovskite film is fully discussed here. Abstract:The fast progress of lab-scale perovskite solar cells makes the problem of upscaling of perovskite thin-film deposition more and more acute; therefore, the development of new methods for perovskite deposition is highly desired. In this work, we proposed a new solution-free preparation approach for hybrid perovskite films based on the in situ generation of methylammonium iodide from methylamine and iodine vapors in the presence of an organic reducing agent conjugated with a redox process of metallic lead conversion with iodine vapor. At first, we demonstrated that either metallic lead or lead iodide powders can readily react with the solution of methylamine and iodine in the presence of isopropyl alcohol acting as a reducing agent, resulting in a phase-pure polycrystalline CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite. A possible mechanism of underlying chemical processes has been proposed. In order to convert the predeposited thin films of metallic lead to CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite, a protocol of sequential treatment by iodine and methylamine vapors was proposed. Finally, we revealed the optimal conditions of processing, which were proven to be facile and robust for the sake of the better control of perovskite grain morphology.

Polyoxometalate Reinforced Perovskite Phase for High‐Performance Perovskite Photovoltaics

Abstract:An organic/inorganic hybrid polyoxometalate is developed to reinforce the halide perovskite ABX3 structure, involving the strategic regulation of cationic components to passivate A‐site vacancy defects and metal ions to enhance electron shuttling at B‐ and X‐site defects. The resulting device achieves an efficiency exceeding 25% with improved durability, showing the promise of using functional polyoxometalates to improve perovskite photovoltaics. Ionic hybrid perovskites face challenges in maintaining their structural stability against non‐equilibrium phase degradation, therefore, it is essential to develop effective ways to reinforce their corner‐shared [PbI6]4− octahedral units. To strengthen structural stability, redox‐active functional polyoxometalates (POMs) are developed and incorporated into perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to form a robust polyoxometalates/perovskite interlayer for stabilizing the perovskite phase. This approach offers several advantages: 1) promotes the formation of an interfacial connecting layer to passivate interfacial defects in addition to stabilize the [PbI6]4− units through exchanged ammonium cations in POMs with perovskites; 2) facilitates continuous structural repairing of Pb0‐ and I0‐rich defects in the [PbI6]4− unit through redox electron shuttling of the electroactive metal ions in POMs; 3) provides guidance for selecting suitable redox mediators based on the kinetic studies of POM's effectiveness in reacting with targeted defects. The POM‐reinforced device maintains 97.2% of its initial PCE after 1500 h of shelf‐life test at 65 °C, while also enhancing the long‐term operational stability. Additionally, this approach can be generally applicable across scalable sizes and various bandgap perovskites in devices, showing the promise of using functional POMs to enhance perovskite photovoltaic performance.

Abstract:A novel intermediate phase modification (IPM) strategy is developed to effectively repair grain boundaries in the CsPbI3 type perovskite microcrystalline thin film, while simultaneously creating patches for interconnecting these boundaries. The resultant CsPbI3 solar cells exhibit a power conversion efficiency of ≈20% and exceptional shelf stability, enduring 3000 h of exposure to air without encapsulation. The presence of excess secondary‐phase PbI2 in perovskite films shows a negative impact on their long‐term stability. Herein, an intermediate phase modification (IPM) strategy is proposed to eliminate residual PbI2 for improved quality of all‐inorganic CsPbI3‐type perovskite films, wherein the extrinsic agent is introduced to address the intermediate phase. By transforming residual PbI2 into a novel 1D perovskite phase, the IPM strategy acts as a patch to suture grain boundaries in the inorganic perovskite films. In addition, the IPM strategy not only enhances the quality of perovskite films but also mitigates energy disorder, reduces trap state density, and prolongs carrier lifetime by expediting the intermediate phase conversion process and passivating surface defects. As such, the perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ≈20% and a high fill factor of 83.3% are considered to be very efficient, with excellent shelf stability of 3000 h of exposure in air without any encapsulation. This work not only exhibits a novel optimization route for inorganic perovskite but also emphasizes the crucial role of eliminating residual PbI2 in inorganic perovskites.

Abstract:Physical vacuum deposition (PVD) of organo-metal halide thin film has advantages of uniform and large scale deposition for emerging perovskite solar cell technology. Evaporation of organic halides such as CH3NH3I (MAI) is crucial for obtaining phase pure perovskite thin films. However, controlling the evaporation rate of MAI remains difficult owing to its "vapor-gas" like nature upon sublimation. Here we report, highly crystalline CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI(3)) films with micrometer grains can be prepared by gradually controlling the MAI vapor pressure rather than evaporation rate in co-evaporation method. When integrating an optimal film into a planar heterojunction solar cell, the best device achieved a power conversion efficiency of 15.74% by deploying TiO2 as an electron transport layer. This strategy alleviates the strict calibration of MAI evaporation rate and led to obtain phase pure MAPbI(3) films for high performance solar cells.

Abstract:Ion migration‐induced intrinsic instability and large‐area fabrication pose a tough challenge for the commercial deployment of perovskite photovoltaics. Herein, we develop an interface heterojunction and metal electrode stabilization strategy by suppressing ion migration via managing lead‐based imperfections. After screening a series of cations and nonhalide anions, the ideal organic salt molecule dimethylammonium trifluoroacetate (DMATFA) consisting of dimethylammonium (DMA+) cation and trifluoroacetate (TFA−) anion is selected to manipulate the surface of perovskite films. DMA+ enables the conversion of active excess and/or unreacted PbI2 into stable new phase DMAPbI3, inhibiting photodecomposition of PbI2 and ion migration. Meanwhile, TFA− can suppress iodide ion migration through passivating undercoordinated Pb2+ and/or iodide vacancies. DMA+ and TFA− synergistically stabilize the heterojunction interface and silver electrode. The DMATFA‐treated inverted perovskite solar cells and modules achieve a maximum efficiency of 25.03% (certified 24.65%, 0.1 cm2) and 20.58% (63.74 cm2), respectively, which is the record efficiency ever reported for the devices based on vacuum flash evaporation technology. The DMATFA modification results in outstanding operational stability, as evidenced by maintaining 91% of its original efficiency after 1520 h of maximum power point (MPP) continuous tracking. Nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction as reliable synthetic route to highly stable CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite film

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells have received worldwide interests due to swiftly improved efficiency but the poor stability of the perovskite component hampers the device fabrication under normal condition. Herein, we develop a reliable nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route to stable perovskite films by intermediate chemistry and technology. Perovskite thin-film prepared by nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route is stable for two months with negligible PbI2-impurity under ∼65% humidity, whereas other perovskites prepared by traditional methods degrade distinctly after 2 weeks. Route optimization involves the reaction of PbI2 with excess HI to generate HPbI3, which subsequently undergoes reaction with excess CH3NH2 to deliver CH3NH3PbI3 thin films. High quality of intermediate HPbI3 and CH3NH2 abundance are two important factors to stable CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite. Excess volatile acid/base not only affords full conversion in nonstoichiometric acid-base reaction route but also permits its facile removal for stoichiometric purification, resulting in average efficiency of 16.1% in forward/reverse scans.

Abstract:Eliminating the undesired photoinstability of excess lead iodide (PbI2 ) in the perovskite film and reducing the energy mismatch between the perovskite layer and heterogeneous interfaces are urgent issues to be addressed in the preparation of perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) by two-step sequential deposition method. Here, the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMBF4 ) is employed to convert superfluous PbI2 to more robust 1D EMIMPbI3 which can withstand lattice strain, while forming an interfacial dipole layer at the SnO2 /perovskite interface to reconfigure the interfacial energy band structure and accelerate the charge extraction. Consequently, the unencapsulated PVSCs device attains a champion efficiency of 24.28 % with one of the highest open-circuit voltage (1.19 V). Moreover, the unencapsulated devices showcase significantly improved thermal stability, enhanced environmental stability and remarkable operational stability accompanied by 85 % of primitive efficiency retained over 1500 h at maximum power point tracking under continuous illumination.
Surface-Orientation Elimination of Vapor-Deposited PbI 2 Flakes for Efficient Perovskite Synthesis on Curved Solar Cells

Abstract:Vapor deposition of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has attracted considerable interest for its dry processing characteristics. However, a two-step sequential vapor deposition method suffers from ineffective conversion of PbI2 to perovskite with reasons still unclear. In this report, we carefully investigated the crystallization orientation of PbI2 films deposited by physical vapor deposition via synchrotron grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) and observed an asymmetric scattering pattern with respect to the qz-axis. The observed oriented morphology and texture hinder the diffusion of MAI molecules in the PbI2 films synthesized by vapor deposition, resulting in over 15% PbI2 remaining at the buried interface after reaction with MAI vapor. As a result, the MAPbI3 synthesized in this way was also highly oriented, especially in the surface layers. Surface fumigation (SF) step was introduced to decrease the orientational anisotropy of PbI2, which successfully breaks the diffusion barriers of MAI molecules by forming a complex layer on the PbI2 surface with polar solvent vapors, like dimethyl sulfoxide or 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone. We infer that the SF treatment changes the vapor–solid reaction mechanism from reaction–crystallization to dissolution–recrystallization, which largely promotes the conversion of PbI2 to perovskite. Defects were reduced in perovskite synthesized in this way, and a p-i-n device with 19.56% efficiency was fabricated, which is among the highest efficiencies reported for sequential-vapor-deposited PSCs. Notably, this method enables the fabrication of conformal perovskite layers on uneven substrates. An exemplary PSC showing efficiency of 8.93% was fabricated on a precurved substrate.
