Abstract:In order to provide a basis for water conservation in the restoration of vegetation for an urban water resource area, we studied the generation of runoff characteristics in four typical forests over three time periods in Jinyun Mountain, Chongqing City, based on the observation data of rainfall and runoff processes during the period 2002–2005. The results show that: 1) Rainfall was distributed evenly during the years 2002–2005. Annual rainfall variability was 4.46% and coefficient of variation was 0.0618. Average monthly rainfall tended towards a normal distribution N (113.8, 45972). 2) Both precipitation and runoff can be clearly divided into a dry and a wet season. The dry season was from October to March and the wet season from April to September. Most of annual runoff of the four forest stands occurred in the wet season. The surface runoff in the wet season accounted for more than 85% of the annual runoff, and more than 75% of underground runoff. 3) Both peak values of surface runoff and underground runoff occurred in June. The relation between monthly rainfall and surface/underground runoff was fitted by the model W=aP 2 + bP + c. The order of annual surface runoff was as follows: Phyllostachys pubescens forest > shrub forest > mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest > evergreen broad-leaved forest. The annual underground runoff was evergreen broad-leaved forest > mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest > Phyllostachys pubescens forest > shrub forest. 4) Under similar rainstorms events, the order of the surface runoff coefficient was: evergreen broad-leaved forest < mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest < shrub forest < Phyllostachys pubescens forest. The underground runoff coefficient was: evergreen broad-leaved forest > mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest > Phyllostachys pubescens forest > shrub forest. The relation between rainstorms and surface runoff was fitted by the linear relationship: Q = mp − n. Both mixed Pinus massoniana-broadleaf forest and evergreen broad-leaved forest have better flood regulation effects on an annual and monthly basis and per individual rainstorm. The function of Phyllostachys pubescens forest is the worst on all three bases.

Abstract:To provide a basis for urban afforestation of water conservation in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area,based on the observation data of rainfall and runoff process during 2002-2005,the authors studied the runoff generation characteristics of the four typical forests on three time scales in Jinyun Mountain,Chongqing City.The results show that,1) Rainfall process distributed evenly during 2002-2005.Relative change rate of annual rainfall was 4.46% and variation coefficient was(0.061 8.) Quantitative Assessment of Surface Runoff and Base Flow Response to Multiple Factors in Pengchongjian Small Watershed

Abstract:Quantifying the impacts of multiple factors on surface runoff and base flow is essential for understanding the mechanism of hydrological response and local water resources management as well as preventing floods and droughts. Despite previous studies on quantitative impacts of multiple factors on runoff, there is still a need for assessment of the influence of these factors on both surface runoff and base flow in different temporal scales at the watershed level. The main objective of this paper was to quantify the influence of precipitation variation, evapotranspiration (ET) and vegetation restoration on surface runoff and base flow using empirical statistics and slope change ratio of cumulative quantities (SCRCQ) methods in Pengchongjian small watershed (116°25′48″–116°27′7″ E, 29°31′44″–29°32′56″ N, 2.9 km2), China. The results indicated that, the contribution rates of precipitation variation, ET and vegetation restoration to surface runoff were 42.1%, 28.5%, 29.4% in spring; 45.0%, 37.1%, 17.9% in summer; 30.1%, 29.4%, 40.5% in autumn; 16.7%, 35.1%, 48.2% in winter; and 35.0%, 38.7%, 26.3% in annual scale, respectively. For base flow they were 33.1%, 41.9%, 25.0% in spring; 39.3%, 51.9%, 8.8% in summer; 40.2%, 38.2%, 21.6% in autumn; 24.3%, 39.4%, 36.3% in winter; and 24.4%, 47.9%, 27.7% in annual scale, respectively. Overall, climatic factors, including precipitation and ET change, affect surface runoff generation the most, while ET affects the dynamic change of annual base flowthe most. This study highlights the importance of optimizing forest management to protect the water resource.

Quantitative assessment of the impact of precipitation and vegetation variation on flooding under discrete and continuous rainstorm conditions

Abstract:Precipitation and vegetation are two critical factors affecting floods in watersheds. A quantitative evaluation of their contribution to flooding is of great scientific significance for vegetation construction and water resource management. Thus, this study took the Pengchongjian small watershed, located in Southeastern China, as the research object. Based on geographic and hydrometeorological data from 1983 to 2017, the characteristics of rainstorm and flood in the watershed were analyzed. Meanwhile, the Hydrologic Engineering Center's Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) model was used to quantitatively calculate precipitation and vegetation variation contribution rates to the total flood volume and peak flow under discrete and continuous rainstorm conditions. The results indicated that the rainstorm volume and total flood volume showed a non-significant upward trend in the two periods of 1983–2003 and 2004–2017, and the variation coefficient of total flood volume was higher than that of rainstorm volume. At the same time, the periodic variation characteristics of rainstorm volume and total flood volume in 1983–2017 were basically consistent. The HEC-HMS model offered good simulation of discrete and continuous rainstorm floods, and the simulation accuracy met our requirements. Under the condition of discrete rainstorm, the average contribution rates of precipitation and vegetation variation to the total flood volume were 58.9 % and 41.1 %, and to the peak flow were 54.2 % and 45.8 %, respectively. In the case of continuous rainstorm, when the contribution rate of vegetation variation was positive, the average contribution rates of precipitation and vegetation variation to the total flood volume were 72.2 % and 27.8 %, and to the peak flow were 84.9 % and 15.1 %, respectively. When the contribution rate of vegetation variation was negative, the average contribution rates of precipitation and vegetation variation to the total flood volume were 125.0 % and −25.0 %, and to the peak flow were 132.1 % and −32.1 %, respectively. These results could provide a basis for the comprehensive management of soil and water loss, water resource planning, vegetation construction, and hydrological benefit evaluation.

Responses of Intra-Annual Runoff to Forest Recovery Patterns in Subtropical China

Abstract:Forest recovery plays a critical role in regulating eco-hydrological processes in forested watersheds. However, characteristics of the intra-annual runoff variation associated with different forest recovery patterns remain poorly understood. In this study, three forest change periods were identified, the baseline period (1961–1985), reforestation period (1986 − 2000) and fruit tree planting period (2001–2016). We selected the magnitude of seasonal runoff (wet and dry seasons) and distribution characteristics, i.e., non-uniformity coefficient (Cv), complete accommodation coefficient (Cr), concentration ratio (Cn), concentration period (Cd), absolute variation ratio (ΔR) and relative variation ratio (Cmax). The pair-wise approach evaluated the intra-annual runoff variation characteristics between forest change periods. Results indicate that reforestation decreased wet season runoff and increased dry season runoff. In contrast, fruit tree planting increased wet season runoff and had no significant effect on dry season runoff. For intra-annual runoff distribution characteristics, reforestation significantly reduced the Cv, Cr, Cn and Cmax. Distribution of the intra-annual runoff in the fruit tree planting period was not significantly different from the baseline. We concluded that reforestation reduced the occurance of extreme water conditions in wet and dry seasons and effectively increased the stability of the intra-annual runoff. In contrast, fruit tree planting increased instability and fluctuation of the intra-annual runoff after reforestation. The characteristics of the intra-annual runoff to fruit tree planting was similar to those of the baseline. Therefore, adopting fruit tree planting practices to regulate intra-annual runoff characteristics may not be a practical approach, and impacts of different reforestation practices should be ascertained in our study region. The implications of this study should guide regional land–water management, and this study adds to the understanding of the impacts gained in forest cover on hydrology.
The influence of vegetation type on the hydrological process at the landscape scale

Abstract:The relationship between vegetation and hydrological processes is still a critical issue in ecology and environment science, especially at the landscape scale. Mingjiang valley plays an important role in water and soil resources conservation and erosion control in the upper Yangtze River. In this paper, the influence of vegetation type on hydrological processes at the landscape scale was studied using remote sensing and spatial analysis in Mingjiang valley and its five catchments. First, the vegetation distribution was mapped with high accuracy using three scenes of Landsat thematic mapper (TM) imagery and the optimal iterative unsupervised classification method. Then the spatial precipitation and actual evapotranspiration (AET) database was developed by converting the point-based data of meteorological stations to spatial surface with spatial interpolation. Cross-tabulation spatial analysis was employed to study the relationship between vegetation and rainfall, evaporation, and runoff. The results show that dominant vegetation types are grasslands, forests, and shrublands in the Mingjiang valley, with the proportions of 37.44%, 29.97%, and 22.62%, respectively. The annual precipitation ranges from 560 to 720 mm in areas of conifer and mixed forests, shrublands, and grasslands. For broadleaf forests, croplands, and other vegetation types, the precipitation distribution ranges from 480 to 800 mm, indicating a broader variation than that for the dominant vegetation type. In high-precipitation regions of the valley, forest vegetation covers the largest area. The precipitation is positively correlated with vegetation cover. We found that AET has a nonlinear relationship with vegetation cover, but this relationship is complicated. Our results demonstrated that the relative evapotranspiration rate (ER) is negatively correlated with precipitation, and water remaining (WR) is positively correlated with precipitation in the landscape. From the hydrological records in the Mingjiang valley, the annual mean runoff is 502 m3·s–1, the mean annual runoff amount is 140 × 109 m3, and the annual runoff rate is 0.0213 m3·s–1·km–2. We found that percent forest cover is positively correlated with percent runoff. This supports the results of previous nonspatial investigation in the valley. From scale analysis, we found that most spatial patterns of climate and hydrological variations are scale dependent, e.g., precipitation, AET, ER, WR, and runoff vary at different levels of landscape scales.

Abstract:The occurrence of water scarcity and extreme hydrological events is becoming increasingly frequent worldwide. The river runoff process, as an important link in the water cycle of a basin, is an essential content of the study of hydrological processes in the basin. Vegetation is an influencing factor closely related to hydrological processes in a watershed. This article quantitatively analyzes the impact of vegetation restoration and climate variation on runoff in the Luan River Basin from 1982 to 2018. Firstly, trend analysis was conducted on runoff depth, precipitation, the Normalized Vegetation Index (NDVI), and reference evaporation. Then, Mann–Kendall mutation analysis and Pettitt mutation analysis were used to identify the year of runoff mutation. Finally, a Budyko model was constructed to quantitatively analyze the impact of vegetation and climate change on the runoff of the Luan River. The results showed that: (1) The runoff reduction rate of the Luan River was 1.2437 mm/a. The precipitation was increasing at a rate of 0.6977 mm/a. The reference evaporation rate decreased at a rate of 0.0977 mm/a. The annual growth rate of the Budyko parameter (n) was 0.0283. The annual growth rate of NDVI was 0.0022. (2) The coefficient of determination in the functional equation (a = 14.74, b = −3.4105) for NDVI and Budyko parameter (n) was 0.3297 (p < 0.01). (3) The contributions of Pr, ET0, NDVI, and (n) to reduced flow were −17.49%, 1.46%, 35.25%, and 80.78%, respectively. The increase in vegetation would lead to a decrease in runoff. This study can clarify the impact of vegetation restoration on water resource security in the Luan River Basin.

Abstract:Surface runoff is a major component of the hydrological cycle, and it is essential for supporting the ecosystem services provided by grassland and forest ecosystems. It is of practical importance to understand the mechanisms and the dynamic processes of runoff in a river's basin, and in this study, we focused on the restored montane Pailugou Basin in the Qilian Mountains, Gansu Province, China, since its water status is extremely important for the large arid area and local economies therein. Our purpose was to determine the annual variation in the surface runoff in the Pailugou Basin because it is important to understand the influence of climate fluctuations on surface water resources and the economy of the basin. In addition, little is known about the annual variations in precipitation and runoff in this region of the world. Daily atmospheric precipitation, air temperature and runoff data from 2000 to 2019 were analyzed by the calculation of the uneven annual distribution of surface runoff, the calculation of the complete adjustment coefficient, and the vector accumulation expressed by the concentration degree. We also used the cumulative anomaly approach to determine the interannual variation trend of runoff, while the change trend was quantified by the sliding average method. Finally, we used the Mann–Kendall mutation test method and regression analysis to establish the time-series trend for precipitation and runoff and to determine the period of abrupt runoff changes. The results indicated concentrated and positive distributions of surface runoff on an annual basis, with a small degree of dispersion, and an explicit concentration of extreme flows. The relative variation ranges exhibited a decreasing trend, and the distribution of the surface runoff gradually was uniform over the year. The runoff was highest from July to September (85% of the annual total). We also determined that annual surface runoff in the basin fluctuated over the 20-year period but showed an overall increasing trend, increasing by 3.94 × 105 m3, with an average increase rate of 0.42 × 105 m3 every ten years. From 2005 to 2014, the annual runoff and the proportion of runoff in the flood season (July to September) to the annual runoff fluctuated greatly. The correlation between the runoff and precipitation was significant (r = 0.839, p < 0.05), whereas the correlation between air temperature and surface runoff was low (r = 0.421, p < 0.05).

Impacts of Climatic Fluctuations and Vegetation Greening on Regional Hydrological Processes: A Case Study in the Xiaoxinganling Mountains–Sanjiang Plain Region, Northeastern China

Abstract:The Xiaoxinganling Mountains–Sanjiang Plain region represents a crucial ecological security barrier for the Northeast China Plain and serves as a vital region for national grain production. Over the past two decades, the region has undergone numerous ecological restoration projects. Nevertheless, the combined impact of enhanced vegetation greening and global climate change on the regional hydrological cycle remains inadequately understood. This study employed the distributed hydrological model ESSI-3, reanalysis datasets, and multi-source satellite remote sensing data to quantitatively evaluate the influences of climate change and vegetation dynamics on regional hydrological processes. The study period spans from 2000 to 2020, during which there were significant increases in regional precipitation and leaf area index (p < 0.05). The hydrological simulation results exhibited strong agreement with observed river discharge, evapotranspiration, and terrestrial water storage anomalies, thereby affirming the ESSI-3 model’s reliability in hydrological change assessment. By employing both a constant scenario that solely considered climate change and a dynamic scenario that integrated vegetation dynamics, the findings reveal that: (1) Regionally, climate change driven by increased precipitation significantly augmented runoff fluxes (0.4 mm/year) and water storage components (2.57 mm/year), while evapotranspiration trends downward, attributed primarily to reductions in solar radiation and wind speed; (2) Vegetation greening reversed the decreasing trend in evapotranspiration to an increasing trend, thus exerting a negative impact on runoff and water storage. However, long-term simulations demonstrated that regional runoff fluxes (0.38 mm/year) and water storage components (2.21 mm/year) continue to increase, mainly due to precipitation increments surpassing those of evapotranspiration; (3) Spatially, vegetation greening altered the surface soil moisture content trend in the eastern forested areas from an increase to a decrease. These findings suggested that sub-regional ecological restoration initiatives, such as afforestation, significantly influence the hydrological cycle, especially in areas with higher vegetation greening. Nevertheless, persistent increases in precipitation could effectively mitigate the moisture deficits induced by vegetation greening. The study’s outcomes provide a basis for alleviating concerns regarding potential water consumption risks associated with future ecological restoration and extensive vegetation greening projects, thereby offering scientific guidance for sustainable water resource management.
Direct and indirect effects of rainfall and vegetation coverage on runoff, soil loss, and nutrient loss in a semi‐humid climate

Abstract:<p>Soil and nutrient loss play a vital role in eutrophication of water bodies. Several simulated rainfall experiments have been conducted to investigate the effects of a single controlling factor on soil and nutrient loss. However, the role of precipitation and vegetation coverage in quantifying soil and nutrient loss is still unclear. We monitored runoff, soil loss, and soil nutrient loss under natural rainfall conditions from 2004 to 2015 for 50‐100 m<sup>2</sup> runoff plots around Beijing. Results showed that soil erosion was significantly reduced when vegetation coverage reached 20 and 60%. At levels below 30%, nutrient loss did not differ among different vegetation cover levels. Minimum soil N and P losses were observed at cover levels above 60%. Irrespective of the management measure, soil nutrient losses were higher at high‐intensity rainfall (Imax30>15 mm/h) events compared to low‐intensity events (p < 0.05). We applied structural equation modelling (SEM) to systematically analyze the relative effects of rainfall characteristics and environmental factors on runoff, soil loss, and soil nutrient loss. At high‐intensity rainfall events, neither vegetation cover nor antecedent soil moisture content (ASMC) affected runoff and soil loss. After log‐transformation, soil nutrient loss was significantly linearly correlated with runoff and soil loss (p < 0.01). In addition, we identified the direct and indirect relationships among the influencing factors of soil nutrient loss on runoff plots and constructed a structural diagram of these relationships. The factors positively impacting soil nutrient loss were runoff (44‐48%), maximum rainfall intensity over a 30‐min period (18‐29%), rainfall depth (20‐27%), and soil loss (10‐14%). Studying the effects of rainfall and vegetation coverage factors on runoff, soil loss, and nutrient loss can improve our understanding of the underlying mechanism of slope non‐point source pollution.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Hydrological Recovery in Two Large Forested Watersheds of Southeastern China: the Importance of Watershed Properties in Determining Hydrological Responses to Reforestation

Abstract:Understanding hydrological responses to reforestation is an important subject in watershed management, particularly in large forested watersheds ( > 1000 km2). In this study, we selected two large forested watersheds (Pingjiang and Xiangshui) located in the upper reach of the Poyang Lake watershed, southeastern China (with an area of 3261.4 and 1458 km2, respectively), along with long-term data on climate and hydrology (1954–2006) to assess the effects of large-scale reforestation on streamflow. Both watersheds have similar climate and experienced comparable and dramatic forest changes during the past decades, but with different watershed properties (e.g., the topography is much steeper in Xiangshui than in Pingjiang), which provides us with a unique opportunity to compare the differences in hydrological recovery in two contrasted watersheds. Streamflow at different percentiles (e.g., 5, 10, 50 and 95 %) were compared using a combination of statistical analysis with a year-wise method for each watershed. The results showed that forest recovery had no significant effects on median flows (Q50%) in both watersheds. However, reforestation significantly reduced high flows in Pingjiang, but had limited influence in Xiangshui. Similarly, reforestation had significant and positive effects on low flows (Q95%) in Pingjiang, while it did not significantly change low flows in Xiangshui. Thus, hydrological recovery is limited and slower in the steeper Xiangshui watershed, highlighting that watershed properties are also important for determining hydrological responses to reforestation. This finding has important implications for designing reforestation and watershed management strategies in the context of hydrological recovery.
Response Mechanism of Annual Streamflow Decline to Vegetation Growth and Climate Change in the Han River Basin, China

Abstract:Vegetation changes have a significant impact on the underlying surface of a watershed and alter hydrological processes. To clarify the synergistic evolution relationship between climate, vegetation, and hydrology, this study aims to reveal how vegetation restoration influences streamflow decline. This study first applied the trend-free pre-whitening Mann–Kendall (TFPW-MK) method to identify variation trends of various elements at Baihe and Shayang hydrologic stations from 1982 to 2015. Secondly, an extended Budyko equation was improved by fitting the linear relationship between annual NDVI and Budyko parameter (ω). Finally, based on the extended Budyko formula, the elastic coefficient method was applied to identify the influence of vegetation changes on runoff changes of the Baihe and Shayang stations from 1982 to 2015. The results displayed that (1) the annual NDVI of Baihe and Shayang hydrologic stations both presented an increasing trend, and streamflow presented an insignificant decrease trend. The mutation year of the annual runoff depth of Baihe and Shayang stations both occurred in 1990. (2) The annual NDVI had a significant and positive linear relationship with ω. (3) The streamflow decline of Baihe and Shayang stations is mainly influenced by precipitation variation and human activities. (4) Vegetation growth had a positive effect on the streamflow decline of Baihe and Shayang stations, with a contribution rate of 14.06% and 17.87%. This effect of vegetation growth on discharge attenuation should be given high priority.

Abstract:Hepatobiliary fascioliasis is an uncommon disease. Depending on the stage of the disease it can present with a wide variability of clinical symptoms. Knowledge of the specific radiological findings of the disease is crucial to shorten the time to final diagnosis, which is usually long. We report a case of hepatobiliary fascioliasis in a 26-year-old woman with intermittent abdominal discomfort showing non specific findings at computed tomography and ultrasound. A hypothesis of an infectious disorder was formulated based on MRI findings and a recent history of travelling. Final diagnosis was confirmed by subsequent serology testing.
Effects of Slope Ecological Restoration on Runoff and Its Response to Climate Change

Abstract:Slope ecological restoration and climate change are important factors affecting the hydrological processes of the Huangshui River Basin in Qinghai province, China. How to quantitatively identify the impact of slope ecological restoration on runoff and whether slope ecological restoration can mitigate the impact of future climate change on runoff are both very important. In this paper, the Huangshui River above the center of Minhe county was taken as the research area, and the Pinus tabulaeformis and shrubs were taken as the main forest land types of slope ecological restoration. First, based on the law of forest land variation, the construction scales of slope ecological restoration in different periods were identified. The influence of slope ecological restoration on runoff was then quantitatively evaluated by using a distributed hydrological model. Second, the future climate scenarios of five general circulation models (GCMs) under three representative concentration pathways (RCPs) (i.e., RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5) from 2021 to 2050 were selected and modified by model integration. Combined with the slope ecological restoration scenarios, the influence of slope ecological restoration on runoff under future climate scenarios was explored. The results showed that the effect of slope ecological restoration was significant. Compared with 1980, the area of slope ecological restoration increased by 24% in 2017. Under the present climate conditions (1960–2017), different periods of slope ecological restoration have an effect on the process of runoff in the wet season (June, July, August, and September) and dry season (January, February, March, and December), which eliminates the maximum, replenishes the minimum, and reduces the variability of runoff processes in the watershed. Under the future climate scenario (2021–50), slope ecological restoration will reduce runoff. On the other hand, climate change will increase runoff, and the combination of the two effects will have a certain offsetting effect. On the whole, comparing the influence of slope ecological restoration on the runoff process with that of climate change in different seasons, due to the main influence of slope ecological restoration, the runoff decreased by about 55% in the temperate season (April, May, October, and November), and increased by about 50% in the dry season or wet season due to the main influence of future climate scenarios.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Aims</h3><p class="Para">Since the 1970s, extensive croplands were converted to forest and pasture lands to control severe soil erosion on the Loess Plateau of China. We quantify the direct and indirect effects of vegetation restoration on runoff and sediment yield on hillslopes in the field to improve environmental governance.</p><h3 class="Heading">Methods</h3><p class="Para">An artificial rainfall experiment at a rainfall intensity of 120 mm h<sup>−1</sup> and a slope gradient of 22° were used to distinguish the effects of vegetation restoration on runoff and sediment yield.</p><h3 class="Heading">Results</h3><p class="Para">Compared to the farmland slopes, vegetation restoration directly prolonged the time-to-runoff by 140%, reduced the runoff rate by 20%, and increased the soil infiltration capacity by 15%. Vegetation restoration indirectly delayed the time-to-runoff by 120%, reduced the runoff rate and sediment yield rate by 50% and 94%, respectively, and increased the soil infiltration capacity by 58% on the hillslopes with vegetation restoration.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">The direct effects of vegetation restoration on runoff and sediment yield were lower than its indirect impacts. Vegetation cover, decreases in soil bulk density, and increases in belowground root biomasses and > 0.25 mm aggregate stability were the primary causes of runoff and sediment yield reduction on the slopes with vegetation restoration.</p>

Abstract:Satellite remote sensing of vegetation has indicated that vegetation greenness has increased globally. However, the feedback mechanisms of vegetation restoration on eco-hydrological functions remain unclear, especially in fragile ecosystems. In this study, twelve three-dimensional hillslope plots with different vegetation restoration strategies were selected and their surface and subsurface runoff (SR and SSR, respectively) were monitored in the karst region of southwest China. These strategies were classified as either natural restoration (NR) or artificial management methods (PF, planted forest; GL, grassland), using cropland (CL) as a reference. The results showed that vegetation restoration effectively reduced both SR and SSR. Runoff from the three restoration strategies (59–66 mm) was significantly lower than that from the CL (119 mm). All the strategies had lower runoff than that of CL, except for PF, which exhibited higher SR because of its sparse canopy. Vegetation restoration reduced SR by increasing vegetation cover, which can intercept rainwater and weak the contribution (2.9–12.9%) of rainfall intensity to runoff, thereby reducing runoff generated by “infiltration-excess” mechanisms. This decrease in SSR may be due to an increased water storage capacity in the soil-root zone, causing the soil-bedrock interface to require more rainwater to “fill” and then “spill” to form lateral SSR during the rainfall events. These findings demonstrate that both canopy interception and root-soil interactions contribute to the improvement in hydrological function after vegetation restoration. Among the environmental factors contributing to runoff variation, soil depth was identified as the most crucial (51% of the variance) and showed a positive and negative correlations with SR and SSR, respectively. Consequently, restoration strategies with higher rainwater retention capacity can be selected to reduce SR losses, especially in areas with deeper soil layers. Accordingly, this study reveals that vegetation restoration reduces runoff and highlights the influence of soil depth in karst areas of southwest China.

Abstract:Based on the measured data of 44 years from hydrometric station,this paper conducts a quanti-tative analysis on the rainfall-runoff relationship in Qianshan watershed with the method of self-contrast. Based on the classification map of vegetation coverage,the typical years of 1987,1999 and 2007 are se-lected to study the impact of forest vegetation change in Qianshan watershed on water conservation capaci-ty. Comparing the data of 2007 and 1987,the results show that the percentage of low vegetation coverage area decreased by 56% ;the percentage of medium vegetation coverage increased by 12% ,high vegetation 24% ;the average annual rainfall decreased by 52% ,and the average annual runoff 69% . Therefore,we can draw a conclusion that the growth of the vegetation coverage can help cut the runoff and the runoff co-efficient dramatically and improve the flood control ability of the watershed,which enhances the water conservation capacity of the forest.

Abstract:Quantifying the causes of drought trends is critical for disaster prevention and water resource management. In recent years, not only climatic variables, such as temperature and precipitation (PRE), have changed, but also environmental factors, including vegetation restoration, increased CO 2 concentration, and land cover conversion. However, the role of diverse factors, particularly large-scale vegetation restoration, in influencing drought trends is still indeterminate. In this study, a Ball-Berry canopy conductance model was incorporated into the Shuttleworth–Wallace (S-W) model to estimate the potential evapotranspiration (PET) in the Huang-Huai-Hai-Yangtze River basin from 2001 to 2019. The standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), which considers both water supply (from PRE) and demand (from PET), was adopted to identify drought conditions. Given the complex non-linear relationships in the model, an interpretable machine learning model was applied to the attribution of PET and SPEI trends. The results were as follows: (1) The PRE and PET showed significant upward trends, whereas the change rate of PET (60 mm/10a, p<0.01) was higher than that of PET (44 mm/10a, p 0.1). Increasing PET dominated SPEI trends with a contribution of -0.28/10a (p 0.1); (3) The interpretable machine learning model performed better than multiple linear regression in attributing PET trends; (4) Large-scale vegetation restoration (the increased leaf area index, LAI) and wind speed, were the two dominant factors influencing PET trends with contributions of 32.4 mm/10a (32%) and 19.6 mm/10a (20%), respectively; (5) In terms of the trends in drought across the entire region, the increase in LAI almost offset the positive contributions of PRE to SPEI variations, hence, combined with the influence of the other factors, drought was non-significantly accelerated.

Abstract:<h2>Abstract</h2><p>This study investigates the relations between climate change and both runoff and sediment yield in watersheds and provides a scientific basis for water resources planning and design as well as watershed-scale soil and water conservation. The impact of climate change on runoff and sediment yield in a watershed does not occur in isolation, but is a synergistic process in which climate and vegetation jointly influence runoff and sediment yield. Previous studies have seldom addressed this synergistic effect. For this study, a regression model between climate factors (temperature and precipitation) and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was established using data from the Zhenjiangguan Watershed in China. By combining data on climate-driven changes in vegetation cover, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was built to simulate runoff and sediment yield in the watershed under two scenarios: changes in climate, and synergistic changes in climate and vegetation cover. The simulation results show that precipitation is the most sensitive factor affecting runoff and sediment yield; 10% change in annual precipitation can cause 10%–14% change in annual runoff and 17%–24% change in annual sediment yield. Temperature is also an important factor affecting runoff and sediment yield in the watershed. Each temperature increase of 0.7 °C can result in a decrease of 1.4%–2% in annual runoff and 2%–3.7% in annual sediment yield. This research reveals that accounting for synergetic change in vegetation has an impact on runoff and sediment yield results, and that the magnitude and nature of this influence vary among different combinations of temperature and precipitation changes. When temperature was kept constant, the effect of vegetation cover change caused by precipitation change on runoff and sediment yield was relatively small (only 0.9%–1.5% of the total change), and vegetation cover change inhibited the effects of precipitation change on runoff and sediment yield. When precipitation was kept constant, the effects of vegetation cover change caused by temperature change on runoff and sediment yield were relatively large (20%–30% of the total change), and vegetation cover change enhanced the effects of temperature change on runoff and sediment yield. This investigation considers the synergistic effects of climate and vegetation cover change, and thus further clarifies the extent to which climate change impacts water and ecological resources.</p>

Abstract:Human activities and climate change pose a continuous threat to the ecological stability of natural rivers in many ways. Understanding and analyzing changes in flow regimes from a multidimensional perspective is essential for water resources management. In this research, a comprehensive evaluation framework was developed to quantitatively assess the hydrological condition of the basin in four aspects: river flow regime, ecological water demand, multiple time scales, and drivers. The health status of the Yuanjiang River was assessed using a combination of Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) and eco-flow metrics, and differences in different drivers at different time scales were quantified based on the Choudhury-Yang equation and the ABCD model. The results show that after the abrupt change of the Yuanjiang River in 2004, the runoff decreased by up to 72.97 mm, three of the five groups of IHA reached moderate alteration or above, and its ecological flow was in a tight state for a long time. In addition, the reduction of runoff by precipitation and potential evapotranspiration is not negligible (contribution 40.56%, 6.91%), and the drastic changes in land use and the construction and operation of cascade reservoirs highlight the human impact (contribution 52.53%). Anthropogenic contributions to runoff changes deepen in the order of spring, summer, fall, and winter (6%, 51%, 83%, 95%), and on a monthly scale, human activities were the dominant factor in runoff variability in nine months (61–98%), with climatic factors driving runoff increases of 0.24–6.07 mm only in March, June, September, November, and December.
