Abstract:There are numerous treatment modalities for mandibular defects after tumor surgery. Autogenous particulate cancellous bone marrow graft combined with titanium mesh (PCBM-MESH) is an alternative procedure. The purpose of this study was to evaluate PCBM-MESH for mandibular reconstruction. There were a total of 10 cases from 2000 to 2011. Mandibles were successfully reconstructed in 9 cases; however, reconstruction failed in 1 case. Overall, the recovery of facial contours was excellent; conversely, the evaluation of prosthetic treatment varied widely. Thus, we suggest 3 steps for mandibular reconstruction: (1) recover the continuity of bone segments; (2) simulate optimum facial contours and dental occlusion; and (3) perform the occlusion with dental prostheses. PCBM-MESH is a valuable method for mandibular defects—particularly for restoring facial contours and a favorable alveolar ridge.

Abstract:Contamination of soils by nickel (Ni) has become a serious environmental problem throughout the world, and this substance wields dangerous effects on the ecosystem and food chain. A pot experiment was conducted to examine the effect of rice straw (RS), rice straw biochar (BI), and calcite (CC) at 1% and 2% application rates in a Ni-contaminated soil. The objective was to potentially stabilize Ni and reduce its bioavailability to spinach (Spinacia Oleracea L.). Spinach plants were grown in a Ni-contaminated Ultisol (commonly known as a red clay soil). Plant growth parameter results indicated that a BI 2% application rate significantly increased the root and shoots dry biomass increased by 1.7- and 6.3-fold, respectively, while essential nutrients were enhanced in the spinach plant compared to those in the untreated soil (CK). Moreover, adding amendments significantly decreased CaCl2 extractable Ni by 62.5% 94.1%, and 87.2%, while the toxicity characteristics leaching procedure (TCLP) fell by 26.7%, 47.8%, and 41.7% when using RS, BI, and CC, respectively, at 2% compared to CK. The Ni concentrations in the spinach roots declined by 51.6%, 73.3%, and 68.9%, and in the shoots reduced by 54.1%, 76.7%, and 70.8% for RS, BI, and CC, at a 2% application rate, respectively. Bio-concentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) dropped significantly by as much as 72.7% and 20%, respectively, for BI 2% application rate. Results of the present study clearly indicated that biochar potential soil amendments for Ni stabilization, thereby reducing its bioavailability in the Ni-contaminated soil. This process enhanced the safety of food to be consumed and mitigated security risks.

Abstract:Biochars have attracted attention because of their capability to improve soil fertility, soil carbon content as well as crop yield and productivity. Also, biochars may act as a sorbing material that is being used for the immobilization of different types of contaminants such as potentially toxic metals and make them less bioavailable. In this paper, we investigated the Cd fractionation and spinach uptake of Cd, Fe, Cu, Mn, and Zn in a highly Cd-contaminated soil (0, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 mg Cd kg−1 soil) amended with rice straw biochar (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10% (w/w)). Cd application enhanced the Cd accumulation in spinach plant, whereas a decrease of dry matter yield and concentrations of Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn in spinach biomass is observed. Biochar addition to soil increased spinach dry matter yield and Zn and Fe concentrations but decreased Cd and Cu concentrations in the spinach. Biochar altered the easily exchangeable Cd fractions to the less available ones. Application of biochar decreased the Cd fractions of exchangeable and carbonate-bound, whereas Fe–Mn oxide-bound, organic-bound, and residual fractions increased. Our results showed that the application of biochar can decrease the availability and toxicity of Cd. The low Cd concentration in spinach shoots driven by increasing biochar dose indicates that the application of rice straw biochar is a good approach to reduce Cd transfer risks to human beings and the surrounding environment of metal-contaminated soils. Therefore, for soil remediation purposes, the application of 10% rice straw biochar can be suggested as an optimal application dose.

Abstract:Toxicity induced by heavy metals is a major concern in agriculture as it decreases crops' growth and yield and leads to the deterioration of food quality. Recently, activated carbon has been identified as a possible solution. It can potentially improve crop nutrition and immobilize heavy metals in soil. That is why a glasshouse trial was conducted to investigate the effects of sugarcane bagasse-derived biochar on spinach growth and the availability of cadmium (Cd) and chromium (Cr) in artificially contaminated soil. The soil was placed in pots and contaminated with Cd and Cr at a rate of 10 mg kg-1. Biochar was added to the soil at concentrations of 0 (control), 0 (contaminated control), 100, 150, and 200 g, and 10-day-old nursery spinach plants were transplanted to the pots. The results showed that applying 200 g of biochar significantly increased shoot weight (235 g), soil pH, electrical conductivity, and organic matter. The highest levels of Cd (27.71 mg kg-1) and Cr (20.44 mg kg-1) were observed in the contaminated control pots, while the lowest levels of Cd (16.80 mg kg-1) and Cr (9.80 mg kg-1) were found in pots treated with 200 g of biochar (2%). Similarly, the highest levels of Cd (35.80 mg kg-1) and Cr (40.24 mg kg-1) in the roots were found in the contaminated control pots, while the lowest levels of Cd (19.26 mg kg-1) and Cr (21.34 mg kg-1) were observed in pots treated with 200 g of biochar. Biochar application at a rate of 2% can immobilize Cd and Cr in the soil and improve chlorophyll contents, carotenoids, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and stomatal conductance in spinach in Cd- and Cr-contaminated soils. Further long-term field studies will be necessary to determine the feasibility of applying biochar as an organic amendment for enhancing spinach growth and reducing Cd and Cr bioavailability in contaminated soil.

Investigating the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health hazards of heavy metal ions in Spinacia oleracea grown in agricultural soil treated with biochar and humic acid

Abstract:This study addressed the bioaccumulation and human health risk among the consumption of Spinacia oleracea grown in agricultural soil treated with humic acid (189-2310 ppm) and biochars (0.00-5.10%.wt). The biochars came from two local feedstocks of rice-husk (RH) and sugar-beet-pulp (SBP) pyrolyzed at temperatures 300 and 600 °C. Total concentrations of Cu, Cd, and Ni found in both the soil and biomass/biochar exceeded global safety thresholds. The bioaccumulation levels of HMs in spinach leaves varied, with Fe reaching the highest concentration at 765.27 mg kg-1 and Cd having the lowest concentration at 3.31 mg kg-1. Overall, the concentrations of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Ni in spinach leaves exceeded the safety threshold limits, so that its consumption is not recommended. The assessment of hazard quotient (HI) for the HMs indicated potential health hazards for humans (HI > 1) from consuming the edible parts of spinach. The biochar application rates of 4.35%wt and 0.00%.wt resulted in the highest (3.69) and lowest (3.15) HI values, respectively. The cumulative carcinogenic risk (TCR) ranged from 0.0085 to 0.0119, exceeding the cancer risk threshold. Introducing 5.10%wt biomass/biochar resulted in a 36% rise in TCR compared to the control. The utilization of humic acid alongside HMs-polluted biochars results in elevated levels of HMs bioaccumulation exceeding the allowable thresholds in crops (with a maximum increase of 49% at 2000 ppm humic acid in comparison to 189 ppm). Consequently, this raised the HI by 46% and the TCR by 22%. This study demonstrated that the utilization of HMs-polluted biochars could potentially pose supplementary health hazards. Moreover, it is evident that the utilization of HMs-polluted biochars in treating metal-contaminated soil does not effectively stabilize or reduce pollution.

Abstract:In peri-urban areas, use of industrial wastewater for irrigation is a common practice. Industrial wastewater contains cadmium, chromium, lead, nickel, and other elements that deteriorate food quality and affect human health. Biochar has been proven to remediate heavy metal contaminated soil by reducing their mobility and bioavailability. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of different levels of biochar on spinach growth with low heavy metal concentration and to minimize associated health issues. The experiment lasted two months and the treatments: Control (tap water), untreated and treated industrial wastewater and both in combination with biochar (0.5% and 1%) were applied in completely randomized design. Findings suggested that treated industrial wastewater with 1% biochar resulted in maximum plant height, shoot weight, chlorophyll contents (SPAD value), photosynthetic and transpiration rate. Biochar significantly reduced heavy metal mobility in soil due to its porous structure, high pH, higher CEC, and variety of surface functional groups. The cumulative hazard index (HI), hazard quotient, cancer risk, and total cancer risk (TCR) were calculated using method provided by US-EPA for each metal. All treatments had HI values of < 1, however applying 1% biochar significantly reduced the HI values to 2.00E-01 and 2.88E-01 in adults and children, respectively. TCR for all treatments was < 1, while treated industrial wastewater and biochar (1%) has significantly reduced to 1.55E-02 and 1.91E-03 for adults and children, respectively. Thus, it was determined that irrigation with industrial effluents caused toxicity in vegetables, which had a negative impact on human health. Biochar effectively mitigated metal toxicity in both soil and spinach plants that resulted in reduced health/cancer risk.

Abstract:Globally, soil contamination with heavy metals (HMs) pose serious threats to soil health, crop productivity, and human health. The present investigation involved synthesis and analysis of biochar with bimetallic combination of iron and magnesium (Fe-Mg-BC). Our study evaluated how Fe-Mg-BC affects the absorption of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and copper (Cu) in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) and remediation of soil contaminated with multiple HMs. Results demonstrated the successful loading of iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg) onto pristine biochar (BC) derived from peanut shells. The addition of Fe-Mg-BC (3%) notably increased spinach biomass, enhancing photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance, and intercellular CO2 levels by 22%, 21%, 103%, and 15.3%, respectively. Compared to control, Fe-Mg-BC (3%) suppressed metal-induced oxidative stress by boosting levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT) in roots by 40.9%, 57%, 54.8 %, and in shoots by 55.5%, 65.5%, and 37.4% in shoots, respectively. The Fe-Mg-BC effectively reduced the uptake of Cd, Pb, and Cu in spinach tissues by transforming their bioavailable fractions to non-bioavailable forms. The Fe-Mg-BC (3%) significantly reduced the mobility of Cd, Pb and Cu in soil and limited the concentration of Cd, Pb, and Cu in plant roots by 34.1%, 79.2%, 47%, and shoots by 56.3%, 43.3%, and 54.1%, respectively, compared to control. These findings underscore the potential of Fe-Mg-BC as a promising amendment for reclaiming soils contaminated with variety of HMs, thereby making a significant contribution to the promotion of safer food production.

Abstract:Abstract Consumption of heavy metals, especially lead (Pb) contaminated food is a serious threat to human health. Higher Pb uptake by the plant affects the quality, growth and yield of crops. However, inoculation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) along with a mixture of organic amendments and biochar could be an effective way to overcome the problem of Pb toxicity. That’s why current pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of compost mixed biochar (CB) and ACC deaminase producing PGPR on growth and yield of spinach plants under artificially induced Pb toxicity. Six different treatments i.e., control, Alcaligenes faecalis (PGPR1), Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (PGPR2), compost + biochar (CB), PGPR1 + CB and PGPR2 + CB were applied under 250 mg Pb kg -1 soil. Results showed that inoculation of PGPRs ( Alcaligenes faecalis and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens ) alone and along with CB significantly enhanced root fresh (47%) and dry weight (31%), potassium concentration (11%) in the spinach plant. Whereas, CB + Bacillus amyloliquefaciens significantly decreased (43%) the concentration of Pb in the spinach root over control. In conclusion, CB + Bacillus amyloliquefaciens has the potential to mitigate the Pb induced toxicity in the spinach. The obtained result can be further used in the planning and execution of rhizobacteria and compost mixed biochar-based soil amendment.

Impact of Soil Biochar Incorporation on the Uptake of Heavy Metals Present in Wastewater by Spinach Plants

Abstract:The effect of plantain peel biochar on the uptake of six heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb and Zn) in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) irrigated with untreated wastewater was investigated in nine outdoor lysimeters (0.45 m diameter × 1.0 m height) arranged in a completely randomised design with three replicates. The lysimeters were packed with sandy soil (bulk density 1.35 Mg m−3) and brought to field capacity 1 day before starting the experiment. Biochar (1% w/w) was mixed in the top 0.10 m of soil under biochar amendment. Spinach were planted in each lysimeter, irrigated (every 10 days for 4 times in total), harvested (harvest 1 and harvest 2) and analysed for the heavy metals. Spinach leaves accumulated more heavy metals than the roots and stems. Biochar amendment did not affect the translocation of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Fe and Pb) to spinach leaves, possibly due to competition with other compounds in the soil solution. However, the biochar amendment improved CEC and increased the pH of soils which resulted in a 42% reduction of translocation of Zn in spinach leaves. Assuming daily spinach consumption of 200 g per person, Zn in spinach grown in soil amended with biochar would be below the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake limit for adults (20 mg) as prescribed by WHO/FAO/IAEA. Consumption of spinach grown with wastewater in soil without biochar amendment may not be safe because of Zn toxicity. Likewise, the concentration of Cd, above CODEX permissible levels in the spinach leaves and eleven times higher in wastewater than freshwater irrigation, raises a concern for consumers in developing countries where untreated wastewater is often used for irrigation.

Abstract:Abstract Biochars are cost effective, carbonaceous amendments that can immobilize potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils. Application of silicon (Si) has been shown to mitigate the effect of soil PTEs on plants. Studies on the interaction effects of Si and biochars in PTE-contaminated soils are limited. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the interaction effects of biochars, from sheep manure (SMB) and rice husk (RHB) produced at 300 and 500 °C, and 2 levels of Si (as sodium (Na) metasilicate), on growth and chemical composition of corn ( Zea mays ) in a nickel (Ni)-polluted calcareous soil. The combined application of Si and biochars significantly reduced soil available Ni (17–32%) and the corn shoot Ni concentrations (29–58%), associated with soil pH increase (r = 0.56–0.60, P < 0.01). Application of SMB resulted in greater soil pH increases compared to RHB, and increased soil electrical conductivity (EC) to saline levels, attributed to its higher ash content. Increasing Si application levels also increased soil pH and EC values. Application of all the biochars resulted in significant biomass increases, with RHB having the most positive effect. Despite the positive effect on soil Ni immobilization, the combined application of Si and biochars generally resulted in a decrease in corn shoot biomass yields compared to biochars alone. The biomass decrease was attributed to the significantly higher soil sodicity and pH in the combined treatments which resulted in suppression of macro and micronutrient uptake by the corn. Although the combination of biochar and Na metasilicate was effective at immobilizing soil Ni, future studies should rather employ other essential basic cation metasilicates.

Interactive effects of biochar and mussel shell activated concoctions on immobilization of nickel and their amelioration on the growth of rapeseed in contaminated aged soil

Abstract:Mussel shell (MS) and biochar (BC) are commonly used for the remediation of metal contaminated soil. However, less research has been focused to examine the efficacy of their combinations to reduce metal toxicity in crop plants. This study was therefore conducted to investigate the effects of BC, MS and their activated concoctions on the soil properties, enzyme activities and nickel (Ni) immobilization in aged Ni contaminated soil. Moreover, the growth, photosynthetic pigments and anti-oxidative machnery of Brassica napus plants has also been investigated in order to determine amendments efficiency in reducing soil Ni toxicity for plants. The results showed that the application of Ni adversely affected soil health and trigged stress responses by inducing oxidative stress in B. napus. However, the incorporation of amendments reduced the bioavailability of Ni, and the concoctions of BC and MS showed promising results in the immobilization of Ni. Among various combinations of BC and MS, treatment with BC + MS (3:1) significantly reduced Ni uptake, decreased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhanced antioxidant defense of B. napus plants. Results showed that amendment's combinations stimulated the transcriptional levels of ROS scavenging enzymes and suppressed the expression level of Ni transporters. The morphological and physical characterization techniques (i.e. SEM, BET, EDS, FTIR and X-ray diffraction analyses) showed that amendment's combinations had relatively higher Ni adsorption capacity, indicating that BC and MS concoctions are efficient immobilizing agents for minimizing Ni availability, preventing oxidative toxicity and promoting growth and biomass production in rapeseed plants under metal stress conditions.

They are routinely used in knee, shoulder, elbow and ankle surgery, and have recently been described to have a role in hip surgery. Iron-Doped Biochar Regulated Soil Nickel Adsorption, Wheat Growth, Its Physiology and Elemental Concentration under Contrasting Abiotic Stresses

Abstract:The prevalence of abiotic stresses hampers soil health and plant growth in most ecosystems. In this study, rice husk iron-enriched biochar (BC) was prepared and its superiority in terms of nutrients enrichment, porosity and different acidic functional group (O-H, C=O) relative to simple biochar was confirmed through scanning electron microscopic, X-ray fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared analysis. To further evaluate its nickel (Ni), salt (NaCl) and carbonate (CaCO3) stress mitigating impact on wheat physiology and biochemical attributes, a pot experiment was conducted using; BC (1%), Ni (0.5 mM NiNO3), Na (100 mM NaCl) and CO3 (100 mM CaCO3) and with twelve treatments; T1; Control, T2; NiNO3, T3; CaCO3, T4; NaCl, T5; BC, T6; Ni + BC, T7; CaCO3 + BC, T8; NaCl + BC, T9; Ni + CaCO3 + BC, T10; Ni + NaCl + BC, T11; CaCO3 + NaCl + BC, T12; Ni + NaCl + CaCO3 + BC. The Langmuir isotherm model revealed the maximum Ni adsorption capacity (2433 mg g−1) in treatments where Ni was applied with BC soil. Maximum soil DTPA-extractable Ni was found in the T9 treatment; however, Ni concentration was not reported in wheat roots while only trace amounts of Ni were found in wheat shoots with the T9 treatment. It was suggested that BC has the capacity to induce the immunization effect in plant roots by providing additional Fe so their ionic homeostasis and redox metabolism worked properly. This argument was further paved by the enhanced adsorption of these toxic ions in the presence of BC-favored wheat growth as indicated by maximum increases in shoot iron and potassium concentrations under Ni + CaCO3 + BC, relative to control. Furthermore, the decrease in shoot hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (20%) and malondialdehyde (32%) concentrations and increase in shoot ascorbate peroxidase (81%) and catalase (three-fold) activities under Ni + BC relative to Ni + NaCl + CaCO3 + BC controlled the cell membrane damage. In conclusion, BC proved to be an excellent amendment to reduce the toxic effects of Ni, NaCl and CaCO3 stresses and enhance wheat growth and nutrition.

Abstract:Abstract The potential for toxic elements to contaminate soil has been extensively studied. Therefore, the development of cost-effective methods and materials to prevent toxic element residues in the soil from entering the food chain is of great significance. Industrial and agricultural wastes such as wood vinegar (WV), sodium humate (NaHA) and biochar (BC) were used as raw materials in this study. HA was obtained by acidizing NaHA with WV and then loaded onto BC, which successfully prepared a highly efficient modification agent for nickel-contaminated soil, namely biochar-humic acid material (BC-HA). The characteristics and parameters of BC-HA were obtained by FTIR, SEM, EDS, BET and XPS. The chemisorption of Ni(II) ions by BC-HA conforms to the quasi-second-order kinetic model. Ni(II) ions are distributed on the heterogeneous surface of BC-HA by multimolecular layer adsorption, which accords with the Freundlich isotherm model. WV promotes better binding of HA and BC by introducing more active sites, thus increasing the adsorption capacity of Ni(II) ions on BC-HA. Ni(II) ions in soil are anchored to BC-HA by physical and chemical adsorption, electrostatic interaction, ion exchange and synergy.
Approaching capacity using incremental redundancy without feedback

Abstract:Variable-length codes with incremental redundancy controlled by feedback allow a system to approach capacity with short average blocklengths and thus relatively low-complexity decoders. This paper shows how to use those same variable-length codes with incremental redundancy to approach capacity without feedback. The general principle is to provide a common pool of redundancy that can be accessed by exactly the variable-length codes that need it. We provide example implementations using both regular and irregular low-density generator matrix (LDGM) codes to provide this common pool of redundancy, utilizing the inter-frame coding approach that Zeineddine and Mansour used to combat rate variation due to fading in broadcast transmissions. Obtaining the LDGM degree distributions requires a new design methodology involving differential evolution for a generalized peeling decoder. Monte-Carlo simulations using a 2dB binary-input additive white Gaussian noise channel confirm the feasibility of this new approach. For a frame error rate of 10−3, the irregular LDGM code achieves 96% of the throughput of the corresponding feedback system.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) has no known role in plant biology and is toxic to plants and animals. The Cd mainly accumulated in agricultural soils through anthropogenic activities, such as sewage water irrigation and phosphorus fertilization. Biochar (BC) has been proposed as an amendment to reduce metal toxicity in plants. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of BC (cotton stick at a rate of 0, 3, and 5 %) on Cd uptake and the photosynthetic, physiological, and biochemical responses of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) grown in Cd-spiked soil (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg Cd kg−1 soil). The results showed that Cd toxicity decreased growth, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange characteristics, and amino acid and protein contents in 52-day-old spinach seedlings. The Cd treatments increased the concentrations of Cd, sugar, ascorbic acid, and malondialdehyde (MDA) in plants. The application of BC ameliorated the harmful effects of Cd in spinach plants. Under Cd stress, BC application increased the growth, photosynthesis, and protein contents and decreased Cd concentrations and MDA contents in plants. The maximum BC-mediated increase in dry biomass was about 25 % with 5 % BC application in control plants. It is concluded that BC could ameliorate Cd toxic effects in spinach through changing the physiological and biochemical attributes under Cd stress.

Effects of Common Biochar and Acid-Modified Biochar on Growth and Quality of Spinach in Coastal Saline Soils

Abstract:The rational development and efficient utilization of saline soils can alleviate the problem of insufficient arable land faced by agricultural production in China. A prominent problem is improving soil salt and water conditions for promoting land resources' productivity in coastal areas. Biochar is widely used for soil improvement, as it has remarkable properties. A pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of two kinds of biochar (common biochar and acid-modified biochar) with three addition rates (2%, 4%, and 8%) on the growth, yield, photosynthetic characteristics, and quality of spinach. The results revealed that 2% and 4% common biochar increased the plant height, stem diameter, and leaf area index, effectively improving the yield of spinach and water productivity, while 8% common biochar was detrimental to the growth of spinach to some extent. Acid-modified biochar significantly benefited the growth and increased the water productivity of spinach, ensuring high yields, while also improved quality. Similarly, acid-modified biochar was less effective at high additions than at low-to-medium additions. The integrated biological response version 2 (IBRV2) values under acid-modified biochar treatments were all significantly higher than those under common biochar, but there is no significant difference among three treatments in the same biochar group, which suggested a pronounced amelioration in spinach growth within saline-alkali soil upon the incorporation of acid-modified biochar. Overall, applying acid-modified biochar at the rate of 4% exhibited enormous potential for increasing the yield and quality of spinach in saline soils.

Abstract:The present study holds significant implications, as it aims to investigate the comparative effect of biochar, zeolite, and bentonite minerals on the stabilization of Ni fractions, bioaccumulation, translocation indices, and the reduction in their absorption by pakchoi in smelter- and mine-contaminated soils. The results, which are of great interest, showed that the maximum fresh and dry biomasses of pakchoi were observed up to 28.21 and 18.43% for smelter-polluted soil and 61.96 and 67.90% for mine-contaminated soil amended with zeolite compared to the control. Applying zeolite increased pakchoi chlorophyll SPAD values 1.17-fold in smelter soil and 1.26-fold in mine-polluted soil. The highest Ni immobilization in smelter and mine soil was observed at 76.8 and 85.38% with the application of bentonite, which increased soil pH and CEC. The application of biochar, bentonite, and zeolite reduced the Ni residual, oxidizable, and acid-soluble fractions, but biochar and bentonite increased the reducible fraction of Ni in smelter soil. The highest reduction in Ni in the shoot and root was noted as 82.08 and 68.28% of smelter-polluted soil and 77.25 and 89.61% of mine-polluted soil with bentonite compared to control soil. Overall, it has been concluded that biochar, zeolite, and bentonite can be successfully used to mitigate the Ni concentration in smelter- and mine-polluted soil and reduce uptake by vegetable crops.

Abstract:Chromium (Cr) contamination in agricultural soils, largely due to industrial activities, poses a significant threat to plant growth and productivity. This study examines the effects of Cr stress at concentrations of 100 and 200 mg of K 2 Cr 2 O 7 per kg soil on rapeseed ( Brassica napus ) roots and evaluates the mitigating potential of biochar. Biochar, produced through both slow and fast pyrolysis and applied at 30 g per kg soil, was investigated for its ability to neutralize Cr toxicity. Our findings indicate that Cr stress significantly decreased the growth and physiological functions of rapeseed roots. However, biochar application improved soil pH, cation exchange capacity, and the uptake of essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Additionally, biochar enhanced the production of osmotic regulators like glycine betaine and soluble proteins, as well as indole acetic acid, promoting better root growth and water uptake under Cr stress. Notably, biochar reduced Cr availability and absorption in rapeseed roots, leading to lower levels of stress-related hormones such as abscisic acid, salicylic acid, and jasmonic acid. Among the biochars tested, slow pyrolysis biochar was more effective than fast pyrolysis biochar in mitigating Cr toxicity. These results highlight the potential of slow pyrolysis biochar as a sustainable strategy to alleviate Cr pollution and enhance plant resilience in contaminated soils.
