Abstract:From 1917 to 2017, dairy grazing systems have evolved from uncontrolled grazing of unimproved pastures by dual-purpose dairy-beef breeds to an intensive system with a high output per unit of land from a fit-for-purpose cow. The end of World War I signaled significant government investments in agricultural research institutes around the world, which coincided with technological breakthroughs in milk harvesting and a recognition that important traits in both plants and animals could be improved upon relatively rapidly through genetic selection. Uptake of milk recording and herd testing increased rapidly through the 1920s, as did the recognition that pastures that were rested in between grazing events yielded more in a year than those continuously grazed. This, and the invention and refinement of the electric fence, led to the development of "controlled" rotational grazing. This, in itself, facilitated greater stocking rates and a 5 to 10% increase in milk output per hectare but, perhaps more importantly, it allowed a more efficient use of nitrogen fertilizer, further increasing milk output/land area by 20%. Farmer inventions led to the development of the herringbone and rotary milking parlors, which, along with the "unshortable" electric fence and technological breakthroughs in sperm dilution rates, allowed further dairy farm expansion. Simple but effective technological breakthroughs in reproduction ensured that cows were identified in estrus early (a key factor in maintaining the seasonality of milk production) and enabled researchers to quantify the anestrus problem in grazing herds. Genetic improvement of pasture species has lagged its bovine counterpart, but recent developments in multi-trait indices as well as investment in genetic technologies should significantly increase potential milk production per hectare. Decades of research on the use of feeds other than pasture (i.e., supplementary feeds) have provided consistent milk production responses when the reduction in pasture intake associated with the provision of supplementary feed (i.e., substitution rate) is accounted for. A unique feature of grazing systems research over the last 70 yr has been the use of multi-year farm systems experimentation. These studies have allowed the evaluation of strategic changes to a component of the system on all the interacting features of the system. This technique has allowed excellent component research to be "systemized" and is an essential part of the development of the intensive grazing production system that exists today. Future challenges include the provision of skilled labor or specifically designed automation to optimize farm management and both environmental sustainability and animal welfare concerns, particularly relating to the concentration of nitrogen in each urine patch and the associated risk of nitrate leaching, as well as concerns regarding exposure of animals to harsh climatic conditions. These combined challenges could affect farmers' "social license" to farm in the future.

New phenotypes for new breeding goals in dairy cattle

Abstract:Cattle production faces new challenges regarding sustainability with its three pillars - economic, societal and environmental. The following three main factors will drive dairy cattle selection in the future: (1) During a long period, intensive selection for enhanced productivity has deteriorated most functional traits, some reaching a critical point and needing to be restored. This is especially the case for the Holstein breed and for female fertility, mastitis resistance, longevity and metabolic diseases. (2) Genomic selection offers two new opportunities: as the potential genetic gain can be almost doubled, more traits can be efficiently selected; phenotype recording can be decoupled from selection and limited to several thousand animals. (3) Additional information from other traits can be used, either from existing traditional recording systems at the farm level or from the recent and rapid development of new technologies and precision farming. Milk composition (i.e. mainly fatty acids) should be adapted to better meet human nutritional requirements. Fatty acids can be measured through a new interpretation of the usual medium infrared spectra. Milk composition can also provide additional information about reproduction and health. Modern milk recorders also provide new information, that is, on milking speed or on the shape of milking curves. Electronic devices measuring physiological or activity parameters can predict physiological status like estrus or diseases, and can record behavioral traits. Slaughterhouse data may permit effective selection on carcass traits. Efficient observatories should be set up for early detection of new emerging genetic defects. In the near future, social acceptance of cattle production could depend on its capacity to decrease its ecological footprint. The first solution consists in increasing survival and longevity to reduce replacement needs and the number of nonproductive animals. At the individual level, selection on rumen activity may lead to decreased methane production and concomitantly to improved feed efficiency. A major effort should be dedicated to this new field of research and particularly to rumen flora metagenomics. Low input in cattle production is very important and tomorrow's cow will need to adapt to a less intensive production environment, particularly lower feed quality and limited care. Finally, global climate change will increase pathogen pressure, thus more accurate predictors for disease resistance will be required.

Abstract:We offer a perspective on the major challenges that are confronting the management of reproduction in sheep and cattle in Australia and New Zealand, over the next two decades. An important context is the dominance of grazing systems in which large flocks or herds are managed over large areas where it is challenging to manage reproduction with precision. Consequently, the variable forage supply usually dominates reproductive outcomes, a problem that will be exacerbated by global heating. Thus, in extensive grazing systems, there is a great need for technological solutions to improve the management of nutrition. Global heating will also exert direct effects on reproductive function. Therefore, for the foreseeable future, reproduction will remain a focus for industry. In addition, as the industries develop, we foresee continued societal pressure to reduce medication, mitigate environmental damage, and improve animal well-being. Management solutions for extensive grazing systems must involve minimal interventions with the animals and be applicable to diverse genotypes and environments. Clearly, genetics and breeding will be at the heart of solutions and elegant strategies will be needed that focus on developing animals that are robust, if perhaps a little less productive. A high rate of genetic gain is the main reason for pursuing reproductive technologies, but highly advanced reproductive technology is not likely to be the best fit in extensive management systems. Even for AI, the simplest technology, uptake is limited and lateral thinking is needed to find ways to improve the rates of genetic gain. We conclude that there are many opportunities for improving reproductive performance in sheep and cattle in Australia and New Zealand. As we gain deeper understanding of the processes involved, we should be able to make progress in fertility and fecundity, embryo survival, and postnatal survival. Improvements in reproductive performance will increase productivity, and should also be associated with significantly improved animal well-being and a reduction in methane emissions intensity. To capture these benefits, the development of new management options will require lateral thinking about reproductive technology for extensive grazing systems, and a transdisciplinary approach that brings together the systems biology of grazing animals with an understanding of the barriers to adoption by farmers.

Abstract:The role of psychological criteria in guiding treatment decisions about growth hormone (GH) replacement in idiopathic short stature (ISS) is a current topic of debate. This summary discusses findings about the impact of short stature in terms of observer-rated and patient-reported psychological outcomes. Although a literature review did not provide conclusive evidence for differences in psychological status between short children and children of normal height in the general population, patients and parents, when probed, reported issues, especially in the social domain. Studies do not clearly suggest that the diagnosis of ISS or GH deficiency is related to impaired psychological functioning; they also do not imply that height is the only determinant of psychological status. Similarly, results on treatment-related changes in psychological status are equivocal. Assessment of psychological status should be included in future research and in the current clinical care of patients with ISS. Accumulating evidence suggests that assessment of psychological criteria may become a factor in guiding treatment decisions in patients with ISS.

Abstract:Neonatal estrogenization of the mouse with diethylstilbestrol resulted in time‐of‐exposure and dose‐dependent inhibition of the growth of the prostatic lobes observed at the age of 2 mon. The critical time was the days 1–6 of postnatal life. In neonatally estrogenized (neoDES) mice, responses to 5α‐dihydrotestosterone in terms of nuclear 3H‐thymidine labelling were altered concomitantly with the inhibition of growth and were in accordance with changes in the relative volumes of epithelium, glandular lumina, and interacinar stroma.

Abstract:In temperate regions of Europe where grass grows for most of the year, grazed pasture is the lowest cost feed for milk production. Grazed pasture can make a contribution to dairy cow feeding systems in other parts of Europe, but is less important. While there are many challenges to maintaining or increasing the proportion of grazed grass in dairy cow diets, there are also opportunities to increase its contribution. Grass use and quality can be challenging for several reasons, including the cow and sward interaction, and factors influencing dry matter intake. Adapting grazing management strategies can provide opportunities for incorporating grazing and perhaps increase grazing in dairy cow milk production systems. Pasture management tools and techniques offer the opportunity to increase herbage use at grazing. While there are many benefits of grazing including economic, environmental, animal welfare and social, there are also the challenges to maintaining grazed pasture in dairy cow diets. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of the challenges and opportunities for grazing in dairy milk production systems.

Abstract:Grasslands dominate land cover nationally and globally, and their composition, structure and habitat value are strongly influenced by the actions of domestic and wild grazing animals that feed on them. Different pastures are characterised by varying opportunities for selective feeding by livestock; agronomically improved, sown swards generally consist of a limited range of plant species whereas longer-term leys and semi-natural grasslands are characterised by a more diverse mixture of plants. In the case of botanically diverse permanent pastures/grazing lands, the dietary preferences of different grazers have a more pronounced effect on the botanical composition of the sward in the longer term. Selection of a dominant species within the sward can give less abundant components a chance to compete, increasing community evenness and species richness. Conversely, the selection of minor components reduces sward compositional heterogeneity and hence plant species richness and evenness. Body size, gut type (foregut vs hindgut fermentation), physiological status (growing, pregnant, lactating), metabolic status (extent of body reserves) and environmental conditions all influence the nutrient requirements of a given animal and related foraging priorities. The diet selected is also strongly influenced by the availability of preferred food items, and their vertical and horizontal distribution within the sward. In general, larger animals, such as cattle and horses, are less selective grazers than smaller animals, such as sheep and goats. They are quicker to switch to consuming less-preferred sward components as the availability of preferred resources declines due to their greater forage demands, and as a result can be very effective in controlling competitive plant species consistently avoided by more selective grazers. As a result, low-intensity mixed grazing of cattle and sheep has been shown to improve the diversity and abundance of a range of taxa within grazed ecosystems. Mixed/co-species grazing with different animals exploiting different grassland resources is also associated with increased pasture use efficiency in terms of the use of different sward components and related improvements in nutritional value. In situations where cattle are not available, for example if they are not considered commercially viable, alternative species such as goats, ponies or South American camelids may offer an opportunity to diversify income streams and maintain productive and biodiverse pastures/grazing lands. Stocking rate and timing of grazing also have a considerable role in determining the impact of grazing. Regardless of the species grazing or the pasture grazed, grazing systems are dynamic since selective grazing impacts the future availability of sward components and subsequently dietary choices. New technologies under development provide opportunities to monitor plant/animal interactions more closely and in real time, which will in future support active management to deliver targeted biodiversity gains from specific sites.

Abstract:The typical cow has a maintenance requirement of about 10 Mcal of net energy for lactation (NEL) per day. Each kilogram of milk takes an additional 0.7 Mcal of NEL. Thus, the cow producing 45 kg of milk per day needs 4 times as much total energy as she needs for her maintenance requirement alone. The elite cow producing 90 kg/d needs 7 times as much total energy as she needs for maintenance alone. Consequently, the efficiency of using feed energy is much greater for the elite cow than it was for the cow of 100 yr ago consuming a diet of mostly forage. With increased productivity has come the need for fewer cows to produce milk on a per capita basis and increases in net income per cow. However, compared with energetic efficiency, the efficiency of using feed protein to make milk protein has not increased as dramatically, partly because cows are often fed protein in excess. This nitrogen waste is an environmental concern; N losses in manure contribute to water pollution and ammonia emissions from dairy farms. However, the complexities of protein nutrition and limitations in measuring feed N fractions make accurate specifications for feed protein fractions difficult. The economic risk of underfeeding protein is greater than the risk of overfeeding protein, so protein efficiency has not been maximized in the past, nor is it likely to be maximized in the near future. Most cows also are fed excess P, a notable contaminant of surface waters, but several recent studies have shown that feeding P above NRC recommendations has no utility for milk production or fertility. The goal of this article is to examine the impact of nutrition on productivity, efficiency, environmental sustainability, and profitability of the dairy industry.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Fertility is considered a complex trait influenced by many physiological and disease-related variables. These is considerable scientific evidence to support the view that fertility performance is influenced by environment (E), genetics (G) and the interaction between G by E (GxE). Many hypothesis have been proposed to explain this including genetics, physiology, nutrition nad management, and these factors have been investigated at the animal, organ and celluar level at critical time points of the productive life of dairy cows ( Walsh et al. , 2011). It is largely known that, fertility in dairy cows strongly decreased over the last decades as milk production per cows has highly increased. Hence, the reproductive efficiency is became an high priority in all systems and it is considered higher in seasonal calving systems as the opportunity for cow to calve and become pregnant is time limited to ensure a calf per cow per year in synchrony with grass growth ( Dillon et al., 2006). Over the last 30 years, genetic selection for increased milk production, particularly within the North American Holstein-Friesian genotype, has been very successful. Between 1985 and 2003, the rate of phenotypic gain in milk production per cow per year has been 193 kg for the United States, 131 kg for the Netherlands, 35 kg for the New Zealand and 46 kg for Ireland ( Dillon et al. , 2006). In Italy, the rate of the phenotypic gain in milk production per cow per year has been 112 kg in Holstein-Friesian with an average increase of the calving interval of 1.4 d per year ( Cassandro and Penasa , 2010). Despite these countries having diverse production systems, genetic selection criteria and climatic conditions, they all report a sensible decline in reproductive performance during the same period inducing, in recent years, the emphasis within selection indices for Holstein-Friesian has shifted from predominantly production to funcional nonproduction traits associated with improved health and fertility ( Miglior et al. , 2005). Poor reproductive performace often leads to premature culling and decreased productive career of dairy cows. The association between the declines in fertility and milk production in the last decades, is evident in the Holstein population, as reported in Figure 1 (USDA-ARS AIPL , 2007).

Abstract:In recent years, low cost carriers (LCCs) have been the fastest growing sector of the aviation industry. The routes served by these carriers were undersized in comparison with principal routes, but deregulation made possible an efficient access to many new markets. The new generation of regional and low cost carriers have enabled a better matching of capacity to demand on routes previously served solely by large airlines, experiencing an increasing role in spatial development. Regional airports impact on local economies directly as a catalyst for other on-site economic activities and indirectly as a regional economic multiplier. This paper analyses the relation between LCC passenger traffic, secondary airports utilization and regional economic development. We underline that increased service at Italian secondary airports could affect economic development in the surrounding regions, including increased tourism and the potential for cluster development.

Abstract:Murine CD4 and CD8 T cells express predominantly types 1 and 4 sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) G protein-coupled receptors (designated S1P1 and S1P4 or previously endothelial differentiation gene-encoded 1 and 6) for S1P, which has a normal plasma concentration of 0.1–1 μM. S1P now is shown to enhance chemotaxis of CD4 T cells to CCL-21 and CCL-5 by up to 2.5-fold at 10 nM to 0.1 μM, whereas 0.3–3 μM S1P inhibits this chemotaxis by up to 70%. Chemotaxis of S1P1, but not S1P4, transfectants to CXCL1 and CXCL4 was similarly affected by S1P. Activation of CD4 T cells, which decreases S1P receptor expression, suppressed effects of S1P on chemotaxis. Pretreatment of labeled CD4 T cells with S1P before reintroduction into mice inhibited by a maximum of 75% their migration into chemokine-challenged s.c. air pouches. The S1P-S1P1 receptor axis thus controls recruitment of naive T cells by maintaining their response threshold to diverse lymphotactic factors.
Multispecies pasture diet and cow breed impacts on milk composition and quality in a seasonal spring-calving dairy production system

Abstract:In recent years, there has been significant emphasis on the composition of pasture-based cow feed and the potential benefits of incorporating multispecies swards to improve sustainability and biodiversity. This study compared the effects of a conventional perennial ryegrass (PRG) monoculture supported by high chemical nitrogen (N) usage with a low chemical N application multispecies sward system (MSS) on the composition and quality of milk across lactation using spring-calving Holstein-Friesian (HF) and Jersey Holstein-Friesian (JFX) cows. Bulk milk samples (n = 144) were collected from each group at morning and evening milking on a weekly basis (n = 36) throughout lactation and analyzed for gross composition and physico-chemical properties. Cow breed had a significant impact on milk profile, with milk from HF cows having significantly smaller milk fat globule (MFG) size, higher instability index values, higher yield, and lower total solids levels, compared with JFX cows. Notably, HF cows had increased milk total solids and fat levels when fed on MSS, as opposed to the PRG-fed HF cows. Feeding MSS pasture increased creaming velocity values in mid and late lactation, and resulted in similar milk gross composition to PRG. In comparison to PRG, MSS-fed groups showed significantly increased total solids yield, including higher levels of protein and fat yield. In late lactation, MSS feeding was associated with reduced MFG size. All physicochemical properties studied (MFG size, creaming velocity, instability index) showed decreasing values from early to late lactation stage. Overall, these findings demonstrate the significant effects of cow diet, breed and stage of lactation on compositional and physico-chemical characteristics of milk, with important implications for milk processing and dairy product quality.
Keeping Dairy Cows for Longer: A Critical Literature Review on Dairy Cow Longevity in High Milk-Producing Countries

Abstract:The ability of dairy farmers to keep their cows for longer could positively enhance the economic performance of the farms, reduce the environmental footprint of the milk industry, and overall help in justifying a sustainable use of animals for food production. However, there is little published on the current status of cow longevity and we hypothesized that a reason may be a lack of standardization and an over narrow focus of the longevity measure itself. The objectives of this critical literature review were: (1) to review metrics used to measure dairy cow longevity; (2) to describe the status of longevity in high milk-producing countries. Current metrics are limited to either the length of time the animal remains in the herd or if it is alive at a given time. To overcome such a limitation, dairy cow longevity should be defined as an animal having an early age at first calving and a long productive life spent in profitable milk production. Combining age at first calving, length of productive life, and margin over all costs would provide a more comprehensive evaluation of longevity by covering both early life conditions and the length of time the animal remains in the herd once it starts to contribute to the farm revenues, as well as the overall animal health and quality of life. This review confirms that dairy cow longevity has decreased in most high milk-producing countries over time and its relationship with milk yield is not straight forward. Increasing cow longevity by reducing involuntary culling would cut health costs, increase cow lifetime profitability, improve animal welfare, and could contribute towards a more sustainable dairy industry while optimizing dairy farmers’ efficiency in the overall use of resources available.

Invited review: selection on net merit to improve lifetime profit

Abstract:Genetic selection has made dairy cows more profit-able producers of milk. Genetic evaluations began with 2 traits measured on a few cows but now include many traits measured on millions of cows. Selection indexes from USDA included yield traits beginning in 1971, productive life and somatic cell score beginning in 1994, conformation traits in 2000, and cow fertility and calving ease in 2003. This latest revision of net merit should result in 2% more progress, worth 5 million dollars/yr nationally, with improved cow health and fitness, but slightly less progress for yield. Fertility and longevity evaluations have similar reliability because cows can have several fertility records, each with lower heritability, compared with one longevity record with higher heritability. Lifetime profit can be estimated more accurately if less heritable traits are evaluated and included instead of ignored. Milk volume has a positive value for fluid use, but a negative value for cheese production. Thus, multiple selection indexes are needed for different markets and production systems. Breeding programs should estimate future rather than current costs and prices. Many other nations have derived selection indexes similar to US net merit.
Genomic Analysis, Progress and Future Perspectives in Dairy Cattle Selection: A Review

Abstract:Genomics comprises a set of current and valuable technologies implemented as selection tools in dairy cattle commercial breeding programs. The intensive progeny testing for production and reproductive traits based on genomic breeding values (GEBVs) has been crucial to increasing dairy cattle productivity. The knowledge of key genes and haplotypes, including their regulation mechanisms, as markers for productivity traits, may improve the strategies on the present and future for dairy cattle selection. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) such as quantitative trait loci (QTL), single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), or single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction (ssGBLUP) methods have already been included in global dairy programs for the estimation of marker-assisted selection-derived effects. The increase in genetic progress based on genomic predicting accuracy has also contributed to the understanding of genetic effects in dairy cattle offspring. However, the crossing within inbred-lines critically increased homozygosis with accumulated negative effects of inbreeding like a decline in reproductive performance. Thus, inaccurate-biased estimations based on empirical-conventional models of dairy production systems face an increased risk of providing suboptimal results derived from errors in the selection of candidates of high genetic merit-based just on low-heritability phenotypic traits. This extends the generation intervals and increases costs due to the significant reduction of genetic gains. The remarkable progress of genomic prediction increases the accurate selection of superior candidates. The scope of the present review is to summarize and discuss the advances and challenges of genomic tools for dairy cattle selection for optimizing breeding programs and controlling negative inbreeding depression effects on productivity and consequently, achieving economic-effective advances in food production efficiency. Particular attention is given to the potential genomic selection-derived results to facilitate precision management on modern dairy farms, including an overview of novel genome editing methodologies as perspectives toward the future.

Using reference curves from 675 women with normal gestations between 14-42 weeks, head circumference and abdominal circumference overestimated gestational age significantly in both study groups, whereas the transverse cerebellar diameter did not.
Holstein-Friesian dairy cows under a predominantly grazing system: interaction between genotype and environment

Abstract:A 5 yr whole-system study, beginning in June 1994, compared the productivity of high [HGM; Australian Breeding Value (ABV) of 49.1 kg of fat plus protein] and low [LGM; ABV of 2.3 kg of fat plus protein] genetic merit cows. Cows from both groups were fed at 3 levels of concentrate (C): 0.34 (low C), 0.84 (medium C), and 1.71 (high C) t of DM/cow per lactation. Thus, there were 6 treatments (farmlets) composed of 18 cows each. The 30 blocks of pasture on each farmlet were matched between farmlets for pasture growth before the study (and soil characteristics and aspect). Cows were culled, and pasture and feed use were managed so as not to bias any one treatment. Genetic merit, level of feeding, and their interaction were significant effects for protein content, protein/cow, and milk and protein/ha. For fat and milk yield/cow, genetic merit and level of feeding were significant, whereas there was no significant effect of genetic merit on fat content. The difference of 46.8 kg of fat plus protein yield between the ABV of HGM and LGM cows and the actual difference in production between the 2 groups was not significantly different except for low C (27 kg) cows. This was due to a 3-fold lower protein yield difference (6 kg/cow) compared with an ABV difference for protein yield of 17.9 kg/cow. The dramatic effect of treatment on protein is in line with differences in the mean protein content (2.89% for the HGM - low C cows compared with a mean of 3.02% for the remaining groups) and mean body condition score [4.3 for HGM - low C cows compared with 4.8 for the mean of the remaining groups (scale 1 to 8)], both indicators reflecting a higher negative energy balance in the HGM - low C cows. When individual cow production was plotted against ABV for production of milk or protein yield all relationships were quadratic, but the slope was relatively flat (low response to ABV) for the low C cows, steeper for the medium C cows and steepest (but not linear) for the high C cows. The relationship between ABV for fat yield and actual fat yield was linear for all levels of concentrate. The mean milk yield/ha from pasture for the 6 farmlets over the 5 yr was 11,868 L, 11,417 L, or 7,761 L for the HGM cows fed at low C, medium C, or high C, respectively, and 10,579 L, 9,800 L, or 5,812 L for LGM cows, fed at low C, medium C, or high C, respectively. The response to concentrates fed was very high for the HGM - medium C cows at 0.115 kg fat plus protein or 1.75 L milk/kg of concentrate fed, with comparable figures of 0.083 kg and 1.0 L, 0.86 kg and 1.47 L and 0.066 and 0.92 L/kg of concentrate fed for the HGM - high C, LGM - medium C, and LGM - high C, respectively. The results show a significant genetic merit by environment (level of feeding) interaction for reproduction and most production parameters when considered in terms of the individual cow and the whole farm system.
Effect of sward species diversity combined with a reduction in nitrogen fertilizer on the performances of spring calving grazing dairy cows

Abstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of sward diversification combined with a reduction of chemical nitrogen (N) fertilizer on the performance of spring calving grazing dairy cows within a farm systems experiment. Three farmlets were created; a monoculture of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.; PRG) fertilized with 250 kg N/ha (PRG-250N), a PRG - white clover (Trifolium repens; WC) sward fertilized with 125 kg N/ha (PRGWC-125N) and a multispecies sward (MSS) comprising of grasses, legumes and herbs also fertilized with 125 kg N/ha (MSS-125N). Each farmlet had its own herd of dairy cows on a total area of 18.7 ha divided into 20 paddocks. Each herd was comprised of pure Holstein-Friesian (HF) and HF Jersey crossbred (JFX) animals and randomly assigned through the 3 treatments. For 3 years (2021 to 2023), the performances of both swards (grass yield, botanical composition, nutritive value) and grazing animals (milk production and composition, body weight (BW) and body condition score (BCS)) were recorded. There were no significant differences in pasture production or sward nutritive value between sward systems and grazing season length was also similar (264 d). On average over the 3 years, PRGWC-125N contained 150 g/kg DM of legumes and the MSS-125N contained 160 g/kg DM legumes, 130 g/kg DM plantain and 40 g/kg DM chicory. Both individual cow milk and fat plus protein (Milk solids; MS) yield were lower for PRG-250N (5,018 and 452 kg, respectively), intermediate for PRGWC-125N (5,139 and 463 kg, respectively) and highest for MSS-125N (5,297 and 476 kg, respectively) while milk and MS production per hectare from grazing were similar during the study period (11,523 and 1,016 kg/ha, respectively). Breed also had a significant effect with the JFX having lower milk yield but higher fat and protein concentration compared with HF. This resulted in higher MS production per kg of BW for the JFX compared with HF (0.96 and 0.87 kg MS/kg BW, respectively). The results of this study highlight the possibility for more diverse pastures to reduce chemical N fertilizer input requirements and maintain pasture productivity while increasing animal performance within pasture-based spring calving systems.

Abstract:a psychoneurotic orientation at general hospital units (13) and newer small mental hospitals(9). The purpose of the present study is to describe the operation of the Hill End Day Hospital. There, attempts have been made to provide a comprehensive service. Since 1958, when the unit was planned as a pilot scheme, it has been housed in the limited space of the ’Superintendent’s House’ at the entrance to the mental hospital (760 beds) in St. Albans. The hospital has a catchment area of 300,000 persons and there is no other in-patient or day-patient provision for them. After-care is often provided by general practitioners as well as psychiatric out-patient domiciliary personnel who work in conjunction with the mental hospital and its day hospital. The day hospital provides a service on five days (9 am 5 pm, Monday to Friday) only, and most patients from the large semi-rural area reach there by ambulances.
