Abstract:Immersion cooling is widely used for thermal management of servers. The two-phase immersion cooling, which transfers heat by boiling, possesses efficient temperature control ability under intensive heat generation. In the process of temperature control through boiling, the generation and transportation of bubbles play a crucial role in calculating the heat-transfer capacity. Therefore, it holds immense significance to obtain a profound understanding of the mechanisms underlying bubble formation and detachment. Currently, numerous mechanistic explanations and empirical correlations have been proposed to elucidate the various parameters of bubbles during the boiling process. These findings were considered to be valuable references when selecting appropriate boiling media and designing efficient heating surfaces. To comprehensively present the progress of bubble formation and heat transfer in the boiling system, the forces exerted on the bubbles are highlighted in this article. A meticulous review of bubble-force analysis and correlation formulae pertaining to various relevant parameters (e.g., nucleation sites density, bubble growth rate, bubble growth period, and detachment frequency) was conducted. This review article was also expected to provide a novel foundation for further exploration of enhanced boiling heat transfer.

Abstract:We use the phase field method to track the gas–liquid interface based on the gas–liquid two-phase flow in the pool boiling process, and study the bubble nucleation, growth, deformation, departure and other dynamic behaviors on the heating surface under microgravity. By simulating the correlation between liquid undercooling and bubble dynamics, we find that the bubble growth time increases with the increase of liquid undercooling, but the effect of liquid undercooling on bubble height is not significant. Meanwhile, the gas–liquid–solid three-phase contact angle and the gravity level will also have an effect on the bubble growth time and bubble height. With the increase of the contact angle, the bubble growth time and bubble height when the bubble departs also increase. While the effect of gravity level is on the contrary, the smaller the gravity level is, the larger the bubble height and bubble growth time when the bubble separates.

Abstract:We report about an intriguing boiling regime occurring for small heaters embedded on the boundary in subcooled water. The microheater is realized by focusing a continuous wave laser beam to about $10\,\mu$m in diameter onto a 165\,nm-thick layer of gold, which is submerged in water. After an initial vaporous explosion a single bubble oscillates continuously and repeatably at several $100\,$kHz. The microbubble's oscillations are accompanied with bubble pinch-off leading to a stream of gaseous bubbles into the subcooled water. The self-driven bubble oscillation is explained with a thermally kicked oscillator caused by the non-spherical collapses and by surface pinning. Additionally, Marangoni stresses induce a recirculating streaming flow which transports cold liquid towards the microheater reducing diffusion of heat along the substrate and therefore stabilizing the phenomenon to many million cycles. We speculate that this oscillate boiling regime may allow to overcome the heat transfer thresholds observed during the nucleate boiling crisis and offers a new pathway for heat transfer under microgravity conditions.

Bubble Nucleation and Growth on Microstructure Surface under Microgravity

Abstract:Understanding the nucleation and growth dynamics of the surface bubbles generated on a heated surface can benefit a wide range of modern technologies, such as the cooling systems of electronics, refrigeration cycles, nuclear reactors and metal industries, etc. Usually, these studies are conducted in the terrestrial environment. As space exploration and economy expanding at an unprecedented pace, the aforementioned applications that potentially deployable in space call for the understanding of thermal bubble phenomena in a microgravity setting. In this work, we investigate the nucleation and growth of surface bubble in space, where the gravity effect is negligible compared to the earth. We observe much faster bubble nucleation, and the growth rate can be ~30 times higher than that on the earth. Our finite element thermofluidic simulations show that the thermal convective flow due to gravity around the nucleation site is the key factor that effectively dissipates the heat from heating substrate to the bulk liquid and slows down the bubble nucleation and growth processes. Due to the microgravity field in space, the thermal convective flow is negligible compared to the terrestrial environment, leading to the localization of heat around the nucleation site, and thus enables faster bubble nucleation and growth in space. We also find that bubble nucleation can be influenced by the characteristic length of the microstructures on the heating surface. The microstructures behave as fins to enhance the cooling of the surface. With finer microstructures enabling more efficient surface to liquid heat transfer, the bubble nucleation takes longer.

Abstract:To clear the effects of the hydrodynamic interactions among neighboring vapor bubbles on the saturated pool boiling heat transfer, artificial nucleation sites with several cavity arrangements were manufactured on the substrate surface and measured liquid temperatures near heated substrate by a miniature thermocouple probe with 10 kHz. The surface temperature of heated substrate was measured by an infrared camera with 1 kHz and bubble dynamics were simultaneously visualized by a high-speed video camera with 5 kHz and 10 kHz, respectively. The liquid temperature fluctuations, measured with micro thermocouple 100 mu m and 10 mu m above the substrate surface, were compared among each other and with the transient temperature fields obtained through IR measurements. Results showed that the hydrodynamic interaction among neighboring bubbles causes the liquid convection, that was only detected 100 mu m above the boiling surface. Generally, the degree of liquid temperature fluctuations at 10 mu m height and different arrangements of nucleation sites was under 1 K. Here the superheated sublayer in the vicinity of the boiling surface was generally not affected by the convection. Only when the coalescence from two neighboring nucleation sites occurred and the liquid-vapor interface nearly reached the substrate, a steep temperature drop over 2 K was detected. It was concluded that the viscous sublayer stably exists during boiling of water in lower heat flux conditions. To enhance the convective heat transfer in nucleate boiling, coalesced bubble needs to peel off the viscous sublayer during its deformation. Based on the measurements in this study, this peel-off effect only happens when the coalescence point is less than 1 mm above the heated surface.

Abstract:Previous studies have shown that the bubble behavior has significant influence on boiling phenomena. However, studies of downward-facing bubble behavior were rather scarce compared to that of the upward-facing or vertical surface. In this study, a downward-facing flow boiling experiment was conducted to investigate bubble moving speed and bubble expanding speed under different heat flux and mass flux. A high-speed camera was used to observe the boiling surface conditions, images of which were later processed by a computer vision code written by python. Bubble moving speed and bubble expanding speed were analyzed. In the experiment, bubble moving speed was close to the liquid velocity and prone to follow a normal distribution. Bubble expanding speed increased with heat flux and could be regarded as constant for each bubble in the study regime. A parameter called heater factor was proposed and the average of which was observed to be rather constant under different heat fluxes and mass flux. Moreover, the heater factor was likely to follow a lognormal distribution. The distribution information could be used for building boiling models in future works.

Abstract:A brief review and discussion of the fundamentals of boiling in microgravity is presented with emphasis on the interfacial effects associated with surface tension gradients caused by temperature and concentration variations in the liquid. The Marangoni effect and thermocapillary-driven liquid Row around bubbles, bubble movement and coalescence, and phase-change induced liquid flow were found to have a finite impact on pool boiling in a one-g environment and to play a much more significant role as bubble size and gravity decrease. Specifically, thermocapillary-driven bubble motion and coalescence and phase-change induced liquid flow greatly enhanced and dominated the boiling heat transfer. The interfacial aspects and Marangoni flow were considered in developing models and heat transfer correlations for predicting pool boiling heat transfer of mixtures in microgravity environment.The motion of bubbles sweeping across and coalescing on a heated surface, the evaporation from the thin liquid film or microlayer under a bubble, and the liquid flow induced by evaporation and condensation at a bubble interface are believed to be interdependent and the most important governing mechanisms for boiling heat transfer in microgravity. Future research emphasis will focus on these mechanisms, particularly on the interaction between these transport processes and the developing earth-based experimental technology to simulate microgravity boiling.
Bubble departure and sliding in high-pressure flow boiling of water

Abstract:Bubble growth, departure and sliding in low-pressure flow boiling has received considerable attention in the past. However, most applications of boiling heat transfer rely on high-pressure flow boiling, for which very little is known, as experimental data are scarce and very difficult to obtain. In this work, we conduct an experiment using high-resolution optical techniques. By combining backlit shadowgraphy and phase-detection imaging, we track bubble shape and physical footprint with high spatial (6 $\mu$m) and temporal (33 $\mu$s) resolution, as well as bubble size and position as bubbles nucleate and slide on top of the heated surface. We show that at pressures above 1 MPa, bubbles grow in a heat-diffusion controlled regime and retain a spherical shape throughout the growth and sliding process. We analytically derive non-dimensional numbers to correlate bubble velocity and liquid velocity throughout the turbulent boundary layer and predict the sliding of bubbles on the surface, solely from physical properties and bubble growth rate. We also show that these non-dimensional solutions can be leveraged to formulate elementary criteria that predict the effect of pressure and flow rate on bubble departure diameter and growth time.

Abstract:Understanding the dynamics of surface bubble formation and growth on heated surfaces holds significant implications for diverse modern technologies. While such investigations are traditionally confined to terrestrial conditions, the expansion of space exploration and economy necessitates insights into thermal bubble phenomena in microgravity. In this work, we conduct experiments in the International Space Station to study surface bubble nucleation and growth in a microgravity environment and compare the results to those on Earth. Our findings reveal significantly accelerated bubble nucleation and growth rates, outpacing the terrestrial rates by up to ~30 times. Our thermofluidic simulations confirm the role of gravity-induced thermal convective flow, which dissipates heat from the substrate surface and thus influences bubble nucleation. In microgravity, the influence of thermal convective flow diminishes, resulting in localized heat at the substrate surface, which leads to faster temperature rise. This unique condition enables quicker bubble nucleation and growth. Moreover, we highlight the influence of surface microstructure geometries on bubble nucleation. Acting as heat-transfer fins, the geometries of the microstructures influence heat transfer from the substrate to the water. Finer microstructures, which have larger specific surface areas, enhance surface-to-liquid heat transfer and thus reduce the rate of surface temperature rise, leading to slower bubble nucleation. Our experimental and simulation results provide insights into thermal bubble dynamics in microgravity, which may help design thermal management solutions and develop bubble-based sensing technologies.

Abstract:Extensive studies of vapor bubble in water on microbubble growth and collapse process on microheaters with heat fluxes of 1.2,1.4, and 1.6 GW/m(2) are performed. The 4 mu s heat pulse is applied to 30 x 30 mu m(2), 30 x 60 mu m(2), and 20 x 60 mu m(2) heaters for undergone the nucleate boiling. Sequential images during the micro bubble growth process are recorded by the microscopic flow visualization method coupled with phase-averaged technique. The analysis of the top view images show that the increase of aspect ratio of rectangular shape heater changes the bubble shape into ellipsoid with larger ratio of axes, slower rates of bubble growth and collapse, longer bubble lifetime, later time to reach maximum size but play small roles on incipience nucleation, and vapor formation temperature. While the change of high heat flux shifts the incipience time at nucleation temperature, time to vapor sheet formation, time to reach maximum size and thus the bubble lifetime. With side view of bubble images, not only histories of extension of bubble in height but also histories of the contact angle can be provided. Therefore, the correlations of contact angle/surface tension force and boundary moving speed of bubble boundary as well as the determination of major driving mechanism in bubble growth/collapse process can be identified.

Abstract:A series of experimental studies on the heat transfer characteristics of pool boiling were conducted aboard the Chinese satellite SJ-10 in April 2016. Ground comparative experiments under the same conditions were carried out using the same apparatus. FC-72 was used as the working fluid containing non-condensable gas. The total quasi-stable-state acceleration aboard satellite SJ-10 during its in-orbit flight is approximately 2 × 10 −6 g 0 . The integrated microheater fabricated by the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technique was used to investigate the boiling characteristics. The boiling surface of the integrated microheater is on top of a flat plate quartz glass wafer substrate 2 mm thick, heated by a serpentine Pt thin film (main heater) below the substrate. The effective area of the boiling surface in direct contact with FC-72 is 5.5 mm in diameter. Ten temperature sensors are located around the boiling surface center and uniformly distributed in the circumferential direction. The experimental results show that single-phase convection could still be maintained under lower Rayleigh number conditions, showing consistency with the predictions based on the available correlations. The generated bubble volume determines the boiling state. At high liquid subcooling, the bubbles formed after the liquid vaporizes are relatively small, and steam condensation at the bubble cap promotes the phase change efficiency, which maintains nucleate boiling in microgravity. When subcooling is low, bubbles are larger and cover most of the heating surface, nucleate boiling is difficult to maintain, and the boiling becomes transition boiling. High liquid subcooling improves the heat transfer efficiency, thereby contributing to maintaining the progress of nucleate boiling in microgravity. However, boiling is less affected by liquid subcooling on the ground than in microgravity. A comparison of pool boiling curves between microgravity and normal gravity experiments indicates that nucleate boiling curves under the same subcooling partially overlap, while the heat flux corresponding to the initiation of the nucleate state is lower than that on the ground. In microgravity, lower liquid subcooling and higher heating power will result in larger bubble volumes and easier complete coverage of the heating surface, resulting in an easier transition from nucleate boiling to film boiling.

Abstract:For super-heated water on a substrate with hydrophobic patches immersed in a hydrophilic matrix, one can choose the temperature so that micro-bubbles will form, grow and merge on the hydrophobic patches and not on the hydrophilic matrix. Until covering a patch, making a pinned macro-bubble, a bubble has a contact angle $\pi-\theta_2$, where $\theta_2$ is the receding contact angle of water on the patch material. This pinned macro-bubble serves as the initial condition of a quasi-static growth process, à la Landau, leading to detachment through the formation of a neck, so long as depinning and dewetting of the hydrophilic matrix was avoided during the growth of the pinned bubble: the bubble contact angle should not exceed $\pi-\theta_1$, where $\theta_1$ is the receding contact angle of water on the matrix material. The boiling process may then enter a cycle of macro-bubbles forming and detaching on the patches; the radii of these patches can be optimized for maximizing the heat transfer for a given substrate area. For this analysis to become quantitative, we revisit the Young-Laplace quasi-static evolution of key physical quantities, such as bubble energy, as functions of bubble growing volume, when gravity is either significative or negligible: this concerns both pinned bubbles on a fixed circular footprint (Dirichlet boundary conditions) and free un-pinned bubbles with a fixed contact angle (Neumann boundary conditions).

Simulation Of Single Bubble Evaporation In A Microchannel In Zero Gravity With Thermocapillary Effect

Abstract:This paper presents fundamental research on the hydrodynamics and heat transfer surrounding a single elongated bubble during flow boiling in a circular microchannel. A continuum surface force (CSF) model based on the volume of fluid (VOF) method is combined with the thermocapillary force to explore the effects of thermocapillarity for flow boiling in microchannels. To validate the self-defined codes, a two-phase thermocapillary-driven flow and a Taylor bubble growing in a capillary tube are studied. Results of both test cases show good convergence and agreement with data from the earlier literature. The bubble motion and the local heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on the heated wall with respect to time are discussed. It is found that for large Marangoni number (case 3), variation of surface tension has affected the bubble shape and temperature profile. The thermocapillary effect induces convection in a thin liquid film region, which augments the HTCs at specified positions. The numerical investigation also shows that the average HTC increased by 6.7% in case 3 when compared with case 1. Thus, it is very important to study further the effects of themocapillarity and the Marangoni effect on bubble growth in microchannels.

Abstract:The paper presents the experimental results on transient nucleate boiling on the heater surface with rapidly increasing surface temperature. According to the results of high-speed video recording with a frequency of 180 000 frames per second and a spatial resolution of 5.5 urn per pixel, the input data for existing models of heat transfer during nucleate boiling must be refined to take into account the existence of cluster and pulsating bubbles. It has been established that bubbles, interacting through the exchange of momentum, heat and vapor mass, accelerate activation of neighboring vaporization sites, so the clusters of bubbles can form at the initial stage of covering the heater surface with vapor. The main characteristics of single, cluster and pulsating bubbles have been studied for the wall superheating from 0 to 14 K above the temperature of nucleation beginning and flow subcooling from 23 to 103 K.

Abstract:Experiments on subcooled flow boiling have been carried out to investigate the dynamical parameters and thermal impact of a growing vapor bubble under vertically upward and downward flow configurations with water as the fluid medium. Bubble growth and detachment phenomena have been visualized in real-time using high-speed rainbow schlieren technique. Schlieren-based imaging technique simultaneously maps both the bubble dynamics and thermal gradients field along the heater surface. Experimental data have been compared for a range of Reynolds number (Re = 3600–7200) at a constant subcooling level of ΔTsub = 4°C. The thermal aspects have been identified in the form of real-time visualization of thermal boundary layer and its scavenging as the bubble detaches/lifts-off from the heater surface. Time variation of various bubble dynamic parameters have been determined from the quantitative processing of the schlieren images. Significant differences in the bubble trajectory after departure from the nucleation site were observed for downward and upward flow configurations. For Re ≤ 6000, comparatively higher evaporative heat flux dissipation was obtained for upward flow, while at Re ≥ 6000, the evaporative heat flux dissipation was found to be more or less similar for both upflow and downflow configurations.

Abstract:Nucleate pool boiling heat transfer is very effective and boiling is a very important heat transfer enhancement mechanism.A micro-scale 96 heater array was used in an experiment study of boiling heat transfer with each heater controlled by an individual feedback circuit at a constant temperature of 120℃.The bubble dynamics were observed from both sides and under the bubble by a high-speed camera.The heat fluxes during different ebullition cycles were simultaneously recorded by a high-speed data acquisition system.Each individual region was first heated to generate separate bubbles that were analyzed to calculate the bubble departure frequencies,departure diameters and heat fluxes.Two nearby regions were then heated so two bubbles could grow and coalesce to form a large bubble and depart.The bubble coalescence process is associated with a combination of bubble stretching,oscillation and sliding,which all greatly enhance the heat transfer and increase bubble departure frequencies.An analysis of the heat flux of each heater showed that transient conduction is the main heat transfer mechanism during nucleate boiling.
Nanostructure-Supported Evaporation Underneath a Growing Bubble

Abstract:High porosity nanostructured coatings have been extensively studied for their use in enhancing liquid-to-vapor phase change due to their ability to wick liquids laterally across surfaces during boiling. Although the effect of these coatings on the maximum heat transfer rate achievable (the critical heat flux) is now well understood, the impact on boiling efficiency (the heat transfer coefficient) is less clear. In this work, a novel experimental apparatus is used to take heat transfer measurements beneath growing and departing bubbles on nanostructured surfaces. By independently tuning the surface heat flux and bubble departure time, IR thermography is used to directly visualize and characterize surface superheat, heat flux, and heat transfer coefficient during the highly transient bubble ebullition cycle. It is shown that although flat surfaces exhibit large spatial and temporal variations in surface temperature and heat flux, the nanostructured coatings produce a uniform temperature profile with enhanced heat transfer due to evaporation from the nanostructure-supported liquid films beneath the bubble. This work demonstrates the relative importance of advancing and receding contact lines, as well as the quenching process, on the overall thermal performance of structured and nonstructured surfaces. It is seen that the combined effects produce a net increase in heat transfer coefficient of over 30%, averaged over the entire ebullition cycle and throughout the entire area of influence. Additionally, the impact of viscous resistance and the importance of the nanostructure dry-out has been studied by tuning the ebullition cycle time to create dry spots. This work shows for the first time the role of nanostructured coatings and thin-film evaporation during nucleate boiling, and it provides a framework to understand the complicated nature of nanostructured boiling across all portions of the boiling curve from nucleation to critical heat flux.

Abstract:Boiling heat transfer associated with bubble growth is perhaps one of the most efficient cooling methodologies due to its large latent heat during phase change. This work aims to accurately measure three-dimensional (3D), space and time-resolved, local liquid temperature distributions surrounding a growing bubble to quantify the heat transfer in the superheated liquid layer during bubble growth. The dual tracer laser-induced fluorescence thermometry technique combined with high-speed imaging captures transient 2D temperature distributions, that will render 3D temperature distributions by combining multiple 2D layers, within a 0.3 °C accuracy at a 30 μm resolution. Two fluorescent dyes, fluorescein and sulforhodamine B, were used to measure transient temperatures, by account of their temperature-sensitive emissions. The results show that the temperature close to the heated surface and bubble interface exhibits an acute transient behavior at the time of bubble departure. The growing bubble works as a pump to remove heat from the surface with a peak temperature difference of up to 10 °C during its growth and departure. The experimental results were compared with previously reported studies to validate the accuracy of the technique. It was found that the heat transfer coefficient close to the bubble interface and heater is approximately 1.3 times higher than the heat transfer coefficient in the bulk liquid.

Abstract:The experimental study on bubble behavior and heat transfer of pool boiling for distilled water and HFE7500 fluid under microgravity has been conducted by using drop tower in the National Microgravity Laboratory of China (NMLC). Two MCH ceramic plates of 20 mm(L) × 10 mm(W) × 1.2 mm(H) were used as the heaters. The nucleate boiling evolution under microgravity was observed during the experiment. It has been found that at the same heat flux, the bubbles of HFE7500 (which has smaller contact angle) grew faster and bigger, moved quickly on the heater surface, and were easier to merge into a central big bubble with other bubbles than that of distilled water. The whole process of bubbles coalescence from seven to one was recorded by using video camera. For distilled water (with bigger contact angle), the bubbles tended to keep at the nucleate location on heater surface, and the central big bubble evolved at its nucleate cite by absorbing smaller bubbles nearby. Compared with the bubbles under normal gravity, bubble radius of distilled water under microgravity was about 1.4 times bigger and of HFE7500 was about more than 6 times bigger till the end of experiment. At the beginning, pool boiling heat transfer of distilled water was advanced and then impeded under microgravity. As to HFE7500, the pool boiling impedes the heat transfer from heater to liquid under microgravity throughout the experiment.
