Abstract:Deep gluteal syndrome is a clinical condition in which discomfort may arise due to the pathoanatomy of the subgluteal space. In this study, we conducted an anatomical exploration to categorize the relationship of the piriformis muscle, sciatic nerve, and pudendal nerve to the ischial spine and sacrospinous ligament. Twenty-two cadavers were analyzed. The piriformis muscle, sciatic nerve, and pudendal nerve were exposed either through a transgluteal approach or a gluteal flap. The relationship of the neural structures to the ischial spine, sacrospinous ligament, and ischial bone as they exit the greater sciatic foramen was observed and the exit zones were classified as either: zone A medial to the ischial spine (entirely on sacrospinous ligament), zone B on the ischial spine, and zone C lateral to the ischial spine (entirely on ischial bone). The sciatic nerve was observed either in zone B or zone C in all specimens. The pudendal nerve was found to be either in zone A or B in 97.6% of specimens. The most common combinations were sciatic nerve in zone B and pudendal nerve in zone A (Type I), and sciatic nerve in zone C and pudendal nerve in zone B (Type II). The results from this study show clear anatomical differences in the sciatic nerve-pudendal nerve relationship, which may play a role in pain seen in deep gluteal syndrome. Moreover, classification of the sciatic nerve-ischial spine and pudendal nerve-ischial spine relationships described in this manuscript will help describe different pathologies affecting the deep gluteal area.

Anatomy of piriformis, obturator internus and obturator externus: implications for the posterior surgical approach to the hip

Abstract:We dissected 20 cadaver hips in order to investigate the anatomy and excursion of the trochanteric muscles in relation to the posterior approach for total hip replacement. String models of each muscle were created and their excursion measured while the femur was moved between its anatomical position and the dislocated position. The position of the hip was determined by computer navigation. In contrast to previous studies which showed a separate insertion of piriformis and obturator internus, our findings indicated that piriformis inserted onto the superior and anterior margins of the greater trochanter through a conjoint tendon with obturator internus, and had connections to gluteus medius posteriorly. Division of these connections allowed lateral mobilisation of gluteus medius with minimal retraction. Analysis of the excursion of these muscles revealed that positioning the thigh for preparation of the femur through this approach elongated piriformis to a maximum of 182%, obturator internus to 185% and obturator externus to 220% of their resting lengths, which are above the thresholds for rupture of these muscles. Our findings suggested that gluteus medius may be protected from overstretching by release of its connection with the conjoint tendon. In addition, failure to detach piriformis or the obturators during a posterior approach for total hip replacement could potentially produce damage to these muscles because of over-stretching, obturator externus being the most vulnerable.
Intramuscular innervation of the tensor fasciae latae: Application to total hip arthroplasty

Abstract:The aims of this study were to clarify the extra- and intramuscular branching patterns of the tensor fasciae latae (TFL) with reference to surface landmarks on the thigh and to thus suggest a safe approach for total hip arthroplasty. Sixteen fixed and four fresh cadavers were dissected and subjected to the modified Sihler's staining method to reveal the extra- and intramuscular innervation patterns, and the findings were matched with surface landmarks. The landmarks were measured from the anterior superior iliac spine (ASIS) to the patella and divided into 20 parts along the total length. The average vertical length of the TFL was 15.92 ± 1.61 cm, which was 38.79 ± 2.73% when converted to a percentage. The entry point of the superior gluteal nerve (SGN) was an average of 6.87 ± 1.26 cm (16.71 ± 2.55%) from the ASIS. In all cases, the SGN entered parts 3-5 (10.1%-25%). As the intramuscular nerve branches traveled distally, they had a tendency to innervate more deeply and inferiorly. In all cases, the main SGN branches were intramuscularly distributed in parts 4 and 5 (15.1%-25%). Most tiny SGN branches were found inferiorly in parts 6 and 7 (25.1%-35%). In three of 10 cases, very tiny SGN branches were observed in part 8 (35.1%-38.79%). We did not observe SGN branches in parts 1-3 (0%-15%). When information on the extra- and intramuscular nerve distributions was combined, we found that the nerves were concentrated in parts 3-5 (10.1%-25%). We propose that damage to the SGN can be prevented if parts 3-5 (10.1%-25%) are avoided during surgical treatment, particularly during the approach and incision.

Abstract:The superior gluteal nerve (SGN) is a mixed nerve of the sacral plexus that arises from the posterior divisions of the L4, L5, and S1 nerve roots. The aim of this meta‐analysis was to obtain all relevant data on SGN and its variations. In this study, the authors found that the closest SGN branch to GT was a muscular branch for gluteus minimus muscle, situated less than 4 cm from GT (95% CI: 27.8–49.3). As for the pattern presented by SGN, we found the higher prevalence of the spray pattern in the general population, 70.4% (95% CI: 54.4–96.8), which presents with clinically significant complications, as for predicting the nerves' pathway and may slightly increase surgical difficulty. The superior gluteal nerve (SGN) is a mixed nerve of the sacral plexus that arises from the posterior divisions of the L4, L5, and S1 nerve roots. Its motor branch plays a crucial role in innervation of hip muscles, which allows for physiological gait or walk‐pattern. As for its sensory branch, it provides innervation for the hip joint capsule, especially its superior part. The understanding of this nerve is crucial as it may be injured during many operations involving mostly pelvic surgery, both arthroscopic and open procedures. The risk of injury is especially high during total hip arthroplasty (THA). These lesions often result in the presentation of major walk‐pattern abnormalities. The most classical and commonly known would be the Trendelenburg sign, which presents with pelvic instability characterized by having the patient standing on one leg whereby the pelvis on the contralateral side will be dropping, resulting in a positive sign. The aim of this meta‐analysis was to obtain all relevant data on SGN and its variations, in order to emphasize its anatomical, physiological, as well as clinical implications. A large‐scale search was conducted in all major databases (PubMed, Embase, Science Direct, Google Scholar, and Web of Science) in order to determine and pool all available and relevant SGN data. No restrictions were applied to date or language. The data collection was categorized by prevalence, branching, patterns, course, origin, and distance from anatomical landmarks. Abstract:Objective Far lateral interbody fusion is a minimally invasive operating technique. However, the incidence of postoperative neurological complications is high, and some scholars question its safety. This study describes the neuroanatomical features and spatial orientation within the psoas major. Methods Ten embalmed male cadavers were selected and the left psoas major was dissected. Subsequently, the area between the anterior and the posterior edges of the vertebral body was divided into three equal zones. The nerves' distribution, number, and spatial orientation of the L1‐2 to L4‐5 intervertebral discs were examined. A caliper was used to measure the diameter of the nerve. Results The safety zone of the L1‐2 intervertebral disc level is located in zone I and II, the relative safe zones of the L2‐3 and L4‐5 intervertebral discs are located in zone II, and the safety zone of the L3‐4 intervertebral disc level is located in the caudal side of zone II. The genitofemoral nerve exits the psoas major in a co‐trunk or two‐branch pattern, and its exit point was distributed between the L3 and L4 vertebral bodies, mainly at the L3‐4 intervertebral disc level. The sympathetic ganglia in the psoas major appeared only in zone I at the L2‐3 intervertebral disc level. Conclusions This is a systematic anatomical study that describes the nerves of the psoas major. Spine surgeons can use this study – which consists of important clinical implications –for preoperative planning, and thus, reduce the risk of nerve injury during surgery. Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Conflicting definitions concerning the exact location of the lumbar plexus have been proposed. The present study was carried out to detect anatomical variants regarding the topographical relation between the lumbar plexus and the psoas major muscle as well as lumbar plexus anatomy at the L4-L5 level.METHODS: Sixty-three lumbar plexuses from 32 embalmed cadavers were dissected to determine the topographical relation between lumbar plexus and psoas major muscle. At the L4-L5 levels variability in the course of the femoral as well as obturator nerve were described.RESULTS: The lumbar plexus was situated within the psoas major muscle in 61 of 63 cases. In 2 of 63 cases the entire plexus was localized posterior to the psoas major muscle. In the 61 of 63 cases in which the lumbar plexus was situated within the psoas major muscle, emergence of the individual nerves most often occurred on the posterior or posterolateral surface.CONCLUSIONS: Our results synthesize contrasting assumptions in previous literature, by demonstrating that both locations of the lumbar plexus may be encountered in clinical practice: within and posterior to the psoas major muscle. However, the latter situation represents a minor variant. At the level of L4-L5 the femoral nerve, showing a remarkable degree of branching, as well as the obturator nerve, were found within the psoas major muscle in the vast majority of specimens.

Abstract:[Purpose] To measure electromyographic activity of the piriformis using fine-wire electrodes during 7 hip movements. [Subjects and Methods] Eleven healthy men, without severe low back pain or lower limb injury, participated in this study. Fine-wire electrodes were inserted into the piriformis and surface electrodes were attached to the muscles in the hip region and the trunk muscles on the dominant arm side. Electromyographic signal amplitude was measured during 7 hip movements: side-lying external rotation in hip neutral position, side-lying abduction in hip neutral position, side-lying abduction in hip external rotation, side-lying abduction in hip internal rotation, prone extension in hip neutral position, prone extension in hip external rotation, and prone extension in hip internal rotation. Repeated-measures one-way analysis of variance was used to examine electromyographic activity in each of the 7 hip movements. [Results] Piriformis electromyographic activity was highest during prone hip extension in external rotation. Both the superior and inferior portions of the gluteus maximus were also highly activated during prone hip extension in external rotation. [Conclusion] Prone hip extension in external rotation induced high electromyographic activity in the piriformis and superior and inferior gluteus maximus muscles.
Antiidiotypic activity in sera from sensitised potential transplant recipients.

Abstract:Antiidiotypic activity was determined in non-cytotoxic sera from highly sensitised dialysis patients who previously possessed broad-spectrum lymphocytotoxic antibodies. At least four non-cytotoxic sera from six transfused patients were tested in the short antiidiotypic antibody assay against lymphocytes known to be lysed by cytotoxic sera from the same patient. Of 87 sera/cell combinations studied, antiidiotypic activity was detected in 42 (48%). Antiidiotypic activity was present in IgG fractions and F(ab')2 fragments of two active sera. These results indicate that non-cytotoxic sera from patients who were once highly sensitised possess antiidiotypic activity. Fluctuating levels of lymphocytotoxic antibodies frequently encountered in sera from dialysis patients may be explained at least in part by the development of antiidiotypic antibodies.
Variations of the extrapsoas course of the lumbar plexus with implications for the lateral transpsoas approach to the lumbar spine: a cadaveric study

Abstract:Background: Together with an increased interest in minimally invasive lateral transpsoas approach to the lumbar spine goes a demand for detailed anatomical descriptions of the lumbar plexus. Although definitions of safe zones and essential descriptions of topographical anatomy have been presented in several studies, the existing literature expects standard appearance of the neural structures. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the variability of the extrapsoas portion of the lumbar plexus in regard to the lateral transpsoas approach. Methods: A total of 260 lumbar regions from embalmed cadavers were utilized in this study. The specimens were dissected as per protocol and all nerves from the lumbar plexus were morphologically evaluated. Results: The most common variation of the iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves was fusion of these two nerves (9.6%). Nearly in the half of the cases (48.1%) the genitofemoral nerve left the psoas major muscle already divided into the femoral and genital branches. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve was the least variable one as it resembled its normal morphology in 95.0% of cases. Regarding the variant origins of the femoral nerve, there was a low formation outside the psoas major muscle in 3.8% of cases. The obturator nerve was not variable at its emergence point but frequently branched (40.4%) before entering the obturator canal. In addition to the proper femoral and obturator nerves, accessory nerves were present in 12.3% and 9.2% of cases, respectively. Conclusion: Nerves of the lumbar plexus frequently show atypical anatomy outside the psoas major muscle. The presented study provides a compendious information source of the possibly encountered neural variations during retroperitoneal access to different segments of the lumbar spine.

Abstract:Nerve transfer is a valid surgical procedure for restoring lower‐extremity function after lumbosacral plexus nerve root avulsion. We determined the anatomical feasibility of transferring the obturator and genitofemoral nerves for this purpose. The obturator, genitofemoral and femoral nerves, and the S1 and S2 nerve roots on both sides were exposed in 10 cadaver specimens. We traced all nerves to their origins. The lengths of the obturator and genitofemoral nerves were measured from their origins to their exits from the abdominal cavity. The transverse and longitudinal diameters of all nerves were measured. Specimens were obtained to determine the total number of myelinated fibers in each nerve. The proximal part of the left obturator nerve was anastomosed with the distal part of the right femoral nerve, between the vertebrae and the peritoneum, with an overlap of 2–3 cm. Similarly, the proximal parts of the right obturator and genitofemoral nerves were anastomosed with the ipsilateral S1 and S2 nerve roots, respectively, with an overlap of 2–4 cm. The obturator nerve contained approximately one‐third of the number of fibers (4,300–7,800) presenting in the femoral nerve (13,500–21,000). Similarly, the number of fibers found in the S1 nerve root was in the range 5,200–8,900. The genitofemoral nerve contained approximately half the number of fibers (3,000–4,500) presenting in the S2 nerve root (4,600–8,400). Anatomy of the female pelvic nerves: a macroscopic study of the hypogastric plexus and their relations and variations

Abstract:<p>The autonomic nerves of the lesser pelvis are particularly prone to iatrogenic lesions due to their exposed position during manifold surgical interventions. Nevertheless, the cause of rectal and urinary incontinence or sexual dysfunctions, for example after rectal cancer resection or hysterectomy, remains largely understudied, particularly with regard to the female pelvic autonomic plexuses. This study focused on the macroscopic description of the superior hypogastric plexus, hypogastric nerves, inferior hypogastric plexus, the parasympathetic pelvic splanchnic nerves and the sympathetic fibres. Their arrangement is described in relation to commonly used surgical landmarks such as the sacral promontory, ureters, uterosacral ligaments, uterine and rectal blood vessels. Thirty‐one embalmed female pelvises from 20 formalin‐fixed and 11 Thiel‐fixed cadavers were prepared. In all cases explored, the superior hypogastric plexus was situated anterior to the bifurcation of the abdominal aorta. In 60% of specimens, it reached the sacral promontory, whereas in 40% of specimens, it continued across the pelvic brim until S1. In about 25% of the subjects, we detected an accessory hypogastric nerve, which has not been systematically described so far. It originated medially from the inferior margin of the superior hypogastric plexus and continued medially into the presacral space. The existence of an accessory hypogastric nerve was confirmed during laparoscopy and by histological examination. The inferior hypogastric plexuses formed fan‐shaped plexiform structures at the end of both hypogastric nerves, exactly at the junction of the ureter and the posterior wall of the uterine artery at the uterosacral ligament. In addition to the pelvic splanchnic nerves from S2–S4, which joined the inferior hypogastric plexus, 18% of the specimens in the present study revealed an additional pelvic splanchnic nerve originating from the S1 sacral root. In general, form, breadth and alignment of the autonomic nerves displayed large individual variations, which could also have a clinical impact on the postoperative function of the pelvic organs. The study serves as a basis for future investigations on the autonomic innervation of the female pelvic organs.</p>

Localization of the Lumbar Plexus in the Psoas Muscle: Considerations for Avoiding Lumbar Plexus Injury during the Transpsoas Approach

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Transpsoas lumbar spine surgery is minimally invasive and has very good corrective effects. However, approach-side nerve complications delay post-operative rehabilitation. We anatomically investigated the localization of the lumbar plexus running in the psoas muscle.METHODS: We examined 27 formalin-fixed cadavers. The left-sided psoas muscle was extracted and cut parallel to the intervertebral disc at the L2/3, L3/4, and L4/5 disc levels. Using digitized photographs, we calculated the ratio of the distance from the front edge of the psoas muscle to the center of the lumbar plexus in the anteroposterior diameter of the psoas muscle (%). Then, we calculated the ratio of the distance from the lateral edge of the psoas muscle to the center of the lumbar plexus in the lateral diameter of the psoas muscle (%).RESULTS: The anterior-posterior lumbar plexus localization was 74.5 at L2/3, 74.7 at L3/4, and 81.2 at L4/5. There was a significant difference between L2/3 and L4/5 and between L3/4 and L4/5, but not between L2/3 and L3/4 (P=0.02, 0.01, and 0.94, respectively). The lateral and medial lumbar plexus localization was 85.4 at L2/3, 83.9 at L3/4, and 77.7 at L4/5. There was a significant difference between L2/3 and L4/5 and between L3/4 and L4/5, but not between L2/3 and L3/4 (P=0.01, 0.04, and 0.41, respectively).CONCLUSIONS: The lumbar plexus was localized in the posterior one-third and medial one-third of the psoas muscle and moved to a posterolateral location at L4/5. To avoid neuropathy, consider the psoas muscle's position relative to that of the intervertebral disc. It is essential to understand lumbar plexus localization in the psoas muscle when looking directly at this muscle to enter the pricking point or route with a lower risk of nerve damage.

Accurate segmental motor innervation of human lower-extremity skeletal muscles

Abstract:Background There is limited knowledge about accurate segmental motor innervation of the human lower extremity skeletal muscles. The aim of the present study was to explore the truth of segmental motor innervation of the lower extremity. Methods Included in this study were 20 patients with unilateral fracture of the sacrum and sacral nerve injury, who underwent internal fixation and decompression of the sacral nerve in our hospital between June 2009 and January 2014. L4-S4 nerve roots of the uninjured side were stimulated during operation. Motor innervation was determined by stimulating the spinal nerves with supramaximal intensity. Results We found the gluteus medius and the gluteus maximus were both mainly innervated by L5 and S1. In addition, the nerve fibres that innervated the extensor digitorum brevis, the abductor hallucis and the flexor digitorum brevis were mainly from S2 to S3. Conclusions Our study provides the electrophysiological mapping of the segmental anatomy of the human lower extremity muscles, which should be clinically useful in helping the diagnosis and treatment of nerve injury and neuropathies.

Abstract:Our knowledge of the accurate segmental motor innervation of the skeletal muscles of the lower extremity in human beings is inadequate. All the 15 subjects with unilateral fracture of the sacrum and sacral nerve injury underwent internal fixation and decompression of the sacral nerve. The L4-S4 nerve roots of the uninjured side were stimulated during operation. The motor innervation was determined by stimulating the spinal nerves with supramaximal intensity. We found that the gluteus medius and the gluteus maximus were mainly innervated by L5 and S1. Moreover, we found that the nerve fibers that innervated the extensor digitorum brevis, the abductor hallucis, and the flexor digitorum brevis were mainly from S2 and S3. Our findings have provided the electrophysiological mapping of the segmental anatomy of the muscles of the lower extremity, which is of meaningful clinical value in diagnosis and treatment of nerve injury and neurogenic diseases.
An assessment of the variation of the intramuscular innervation of the gracilis muscle, with the aim of determining its neuromuscular compartments

Abstract:Some muscles present neuromuscular compartments, one of which is the gracilis muscle. The aim of the present study is to determine the number of compartments present within the gracilis muscle based on its intramuscular innervation patterns; such knowledge could be of value in free functional muscle transfer. The study comprised 72 gracilis muscles (38 women, 34 men), fixed in 10% formalin solution. The muscles were removed and then stained using Sihler's method. When sufficient transparency was achieved, some measurements were made. Three different types of intramuscular innervation were distinguished. Type I (70.8%) was featured by at least one direct proximal nerve branch. Type II (23.6%) presented at least one indirect proximal nerve branch. Type III (5.6%) did not possess any proximal nerve branch. The median of descended nerve branches was five. Considerable anatomical variation is possible within the intramuscular innervation of the gracilis muscle. The muscle presents neuromuscular compartments, but the exact number depends on the type of its intramuscular innervation and the number of the main descendent nerve branches. All three types seem to be appropriate for free functional muscle transfer. Our findings may be of great value for surgeons carrying out complex reconstructions with the use of the gracilis muscle.
Unusual nerve communication in gluteal region: embryological basis and clinical perspective

Abstract:The posterior femoral cutaneous nerve (PFCN) has been widely studied with context to its origin, distribution and mononeuropathies. Due to the vulnerability of the gluteal region to iatrogenic injuries and pressure ulcers etc., an understanding of the cutaneous innervation of the gluteal region holds immense relevance. The communication between the PFCN and the inferior gluteal nerve (IGN) was observed at the back of thigh of a 56-year-old male cadaver while exploring distribution of nerves in gluteal region during routine anatomical dissection. The above communication holds importance in numerous diagnostic and reconstructive procedures. It assumes relevance where nerve blocks in PFCN are needed for surgical procedures in the vicinity of the thigh, knee, and the postero-superior part of the leg. The grade of motor response elicited in IGN on attempted PFCN stimulation could be a reliable determinant of adequate PFCN block.
AN OBSERVATION ON THE RAMIFICATION OF THE A. ILIACA INTERNA AND EXTERNA OF CHINESE MALE ADULTS

Abstract:The branches of the a. iliaca int. and ext. of 60 Chinese male adult cadavers (120 sides) were studied and the findings are as follows: 1. The average length of the internal iliac trunk is 4.35±0.17cm,σ=±1.34cm, in the left, and 4.56±0.21cm,σ=±1.63 cm in the right. It is inversely proportional to the average length of the common iliac artery. 2. The patterns of the branching of the superior, inferior gluteal and internal pudendal artieries may be classified into 5 types: type Ⅰ is present in 63 sides (cases) (52.5±4.55%); type Ⅱ and Ⅲ occur in 26 cases (21.67±3.76%); type Ⅳ occurs in 4 cases (3.33±1.64%) and type Ⅴ is present only in 1 side (0.85 0.83%). 3. In most of the cases, the superior gluteal artery passes between the lumbosacral trunk and the first sacral nerve (79.83%), while the inferior gluteal (66.67%) and the internal pudendal artery (62.19%) usually pass between the second and third sacral nerve into the gluteal region. A few of these vessels may divide into 2 or 3 branches before leaving the pelvis. 4. The accessory pudendal artery is present in 13 cases (10.83±2.83%). 5. The obturator artery originates from the internal iliac artery in 102 cases (85.0±3.26%), most of them spring from the anterior trunk of the internal iliac artery. In the other 18 cases, 2 spring directly from the external iliac artery (1.67± 1.17%), 13 from the inferior epigastric artery (10.83±2.85%), and 3 have double origins (2.5±1.42%), in which the 2 branches spring separately from the internal iliac and inferior epigastric artery. These abnormal obturator arteries occur in 14 cadavers (23.33±5.44%). 6. The iliolumbar artery is present in 80 cases (66.67±4.30%) as a single branch, in 37 cases (30.83±4.2%) with 2 separate branches and in 3 cases (2.5± 1.43%) with 3 branches. It has various origins, most of them spring from the main trunk or from the posterior trunk of the internal iliac artery. 7. The lateral sacral artery occurs in 54 cases (45.0±4.54%) as a single branch, in 57 cases (47.5±4.55%) with 2 branches, and in 9 cases (7.5±2.44%) with 3 branches. Its origin is comparatively constant, usually arising from the posterior trunk of the internal iliac artery. 8. Most of the superior vesical arteries spring from the root of the umbilical artery. The number of branches of this vessel varies from 1 to 6, but most of them have 1 (46 cases, 38.33±4.43%) or 2 (45 cases, 37.5±4.42%) branches. 9. The inferior vesical artery has 1--3 branches. Most of them have a single branch (104 cases, 86.67±3.1%), it springs commonly from the anterior trunk of the internal iliac artery or from the internal pudendal artery. 10. The deferent artery springs in 85 cases (70.83±4.15%) as a single branch, and in 35 (29.17±4.15%) with 2 branches. In the single-branch type it springs mostly from the root of the umbilical artery, and in the two-branch type both spring commonly from the superior vesical artery. 11. The inferior rectal (middle hemorrhoidal) artery is present only in 106 cases (88.33±2.93%), most of them spring from the internal pudendal and inferior gluteal arteries. In 3 cadavers (5.0±1.99%) they spring from the middle sacral artery sym- metrically. 12. In 103 cases (85.85±3.32%) the inferior epigastric artery springs indepen- dently from the external iliac artery, in 16 cases (13.33±3.13%) it springs as a com- mon trunk with the obturator artery, and in one side (0.83±0.83%) with the medial femoral circumflex artery. Its origin-site on the external iliac artery is proxmal to the inguinal ligament in 69 cases (57.5±4.51%) with an average distance of 0.95±0.10 cm,σ=±0.59cm in the left, and 0.73±0.08 cm,σ=±0.43 cm in the right; in 43 cases (35.83±4.67%) the origin-site is just behind the ligament; and in 8 cases (6.67±2.28%) it is distal to the ligament, its average distance is 0.48±0.09 cm, σ=±0.18 cm in the left, and 0.45±0.11 cm,σ=±0.22 cm in the right. 13. The deep iliac circumflex artery, a single branch, is present in 115 cases (95.83±1.82%), the remaining 5 cases (4.17±1.82%) have 2 branches. In 54 cases (45.0±4.54%) its origin-site is just behind the inguinal ligament; in 36 cases (30.0±4.18%) is proximal to the ligament with an average distance of 0.56±0.09 cm,σ=±0.38 cm in the left, and 0.61±0.09 cm,σ=±0.35 cm in the right; and in 25 cases (20.83±3.72%) it is distal to the ligament, the average distance shows 0.62±0.12 cm,σ=±0.45 cm in the left, and 0.69±0.12 cm,σ=±0.41 cm in the right.
