Abstract:Retail stores contain a wide range of products that can emit a variety of indoor pollutants. Among these chemicals, phthalate esters and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are two important categories of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Filters in heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system collect particles from large volumes of air and thus potentially provide spatially and temporally integrated SVOC concentrations. This study measured six phthalate and 14 PBDE compounds in HVAC filter dust in 14 retail stores in Texas and Pennsylvania, United States. Phthalates and PBDEs were widely found in the HVAC filter dust in retail environment, indicating that they are ubiquitous indoor pollutants. The potential co-occurrence of phthalates and PBDEs was not strong, suggesting that their indoor sources are diverse. The levels of phthalates and PBDEs measured in HVAC filter dust are comparable to concentrations found in previous investigations of settled dust in residential buildings. Significant correlations between indoor air and filter dust concentrations were found for diethyl phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate, and benzyl butyl phthalate. Reasonable agreement between measurements and an equilibrium model to describe SVOC partitioning between dust and gas-phase is achieved.

Abstract:Quantitative filter forensics (QFF) is a method for estimating the time-averaged concentration of particle-bound containments using filter metadata and its extracted dust. In this study, QFF was applied to dust samples extracted from four types of HVAC filters deployed in 20 homes from December 2016 to December 2017 in Toronto, Canada. The analysis covered six allergens, eight phthalates, and 12 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The allergen results from four homes showed elevated concentrations of cat and dog allergens (Fel d 1 and Can f 1) in homes with cats or dogs. All eight phthalates were detected, dominated by diisononyl phthalate (DiNP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), with median concentrations of 4.74 ng/m3 and 4.64 ng/m3, respectively. All PAHs, except anthracene, were detected in over 50% of the homes, with benzo[b]fluoranthene being the most abundant (median concentration of 0.082 ng/m3). Median concentrations of all semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) were lower in winter 2016 compared to spring 2017, potentially due to losses of more volatile SVOCs from filters because of higher filtration volumes in winter, in addition to differences in sources and ventilation rates. All phthalate and most PAH concentrations were one to two orders of magnitude lower compared to those found from QFF in apartments in Toronto social housing multi-unit residential buildings (MURB), indicating those with lower socio-economic status (SES) were exposed to higher SVOC concentrations. Occupant density was positively related to most phthalate and specific PAH concentrations, while environmental factors including room temperature, relative humidity, and supply air temperature were not.

Abstract:High schools contain various sources that can release semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) including phthalates and other plasticizers, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) and pesticides. In this study, concentrations of 42 SVOCs were measured in settled dust (N = 70), heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) filter dust (N = 13), and indoor air (N = 24) across four sampling events in each of seven high schools in central Texas, United States. Both legacy and emerging SVOCs were widely detected. Statistically significant positive correlations were found amongst the concentrations of several SVOCs in pairwise settled dust, HVAC filter dust, and indoor air, suggesting that HVAC filter dust is a promising quantitative forensic technique for investigating SVOC concentrations indoors. OPFRs had higher concentrations in air for classrooms with carpet, while PBDEs had higher air concentrations in computer classrooms. The concentrations of SVOCs in portable classrooms were generally higher than those in permanent classrooms. Significantly higher concentrations of several SVOCs were found in settled dust during the colder season compared to those of the warmer season. These results suggest the substantial influences of flooring types, building types, and seasonal variations on indoor SVOC concentrations in high schools.

Abstract:Although Chinese residents spend the majority of their time indoors, pollutants in the indoor environment have not been studied as extensively as their outdoor counterparts. This is especially true of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), many of which are associated with adverse health outcomes and have indoor sources. For this study, 20 homes with asthmatic children were recruited from the suburbs of Shanghai, China. This study explored pollutants and the impacts of air filtration on pollutant levels. Air purifiers were installed twice, for two-week periods, in the child’s bedroom – once with all levels of filtration (pre-filter, HEPA filter, carbon filter) and again with only a coarse pre-filter. During both periods, indoor and outdoor samples were collected simultaneously on Tenax and DNPH tubes in the early morning using pump packages developed at Duke University. Of the 900+ compounds detected, 117 were detected in 10 or more samples. Total VOCs were higher indoors than outdoors in most homes under both conditions (median values [in mg m-3] - sham, in/out: 235/59; true, in/out: 119 /77). There was a significant reduction in indoor-outdoor ratios during true compared to sham filtration indicating a potential benefit of filtration (median reduction: 36%, range: -224%, 96%). Non-negative matrix factorization was used to identify groupings of compounds (features) illustrative of sources. Of the features identified, two indicate outdoor sources with certain compounds detected in most outdoor samples but seldom detected indoors. The other three features point to indoor sources. Preliminary analyses indicate compounds detected predominantly indoors may relate to cleaning or personal care products, although analysis is ongoing. This work provides new insight to potentially harmful compounds in Chinese homes, as most previous studies have focused on assessment of total VOCs or select, well-characterized VOCs including BTEX and formaldehyde.
Phthalates in House and Dormitory Dust: Occurrence, Human Exposure and Risk Assessment

Abstract:Phthalates are one of ubiquitous contaminants in the indoor environment. In this study, we analyzed concentrations and profiles of 9 phthalates in dust samples collected from houses and university dormitories in Nanjing, China. The total concentrations of phthalates in house and dormitory dust ranged from 111.4 to 3599.1 µg/g and 86.1 to 1262.3 µg/g, respectively. Phthalates in house was significantly higher than that in dormitory dust (p < 0.01). Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) were the three predominant compounds and accounted for more than 98% of total phthalates in the two microenvironments. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of phthalates, carcinogenic risk (CR) of DEHP, and hazard index (HI) values of DEHP, DBP and DiBP were estimated. Except for adults, the CR of DEHP for four subgroups (infants, toddlers, children, and teenagers) had exceeded the limitation, implying that they are at the risk of exposure to DEHP through dust ingestion.

Abstract:Indoor pollution of manmade semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) such as phthalates are a growing threat to human health. Herein we summarize the dust-phase phthalate concentrations in Chinese residences reported from 2011 to 2021 and simulate corresponding airborne concentrations based on equilibrium models. The simulation considers seasonal and regional variations in indoor temperature and PM2.5 concentration, in contrast to the common practice of using constant values. Results show that variations in these two environmental factors lead to up to ten- and six-fold variations in the monthly median gas- and particle-phase concentrations of phthalates, respectively, in residences in individual climate zones. For higher-vapor-pressure species di-n-butyl phthalate and di-isobutyl phthalate, the resultant seasonal and regional variations in aggregate non-diet intake can reach six- and three-fold, respectively. These results have important implications on exposure assessment of SVOCs and epidemiological evaluation of their health effects.
Concentrations of phthalates in dust at homes, offices, kindergartens and public buildings in Beijing, China

Abstract:Epidemiological studies have shown that phthalates can harm the respiratory, endocrine, and reproductive systems in humans. However, little information is available about the presence of phthalates in the indoor environments in China. This study reports the phthalate concentrations in settled dust collected from homes, offices, kindergartens and public buildings in Beijing, China. The objectives were to investigate the levels of dust-phase phthalates on the different surfaces in the four types of indoor environments and to better understand the significance of indoor dust as a pathway of human exposure to phthalates. The study results showed that five phthalates (DEP, DBP, DIBP, DEHP and DNP) were detected in the four types of indoor environments, among which DBP, DIBP and DEHP were most abundant. There were no significant differences in phthalate concentrations in dust between different types of indoor environments and between different types of surfaces (including PVC flooring). Regular cleaning can help reduce exposure to phthalates in dust.

Abstract:Indoor dust has been extensively used for assessment of indoor contamination, especially for semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). In the present study, the occurrence of four groups of SVOCs, i.e. organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs), emerging PFRs (ePFRs), legacy phthalates (LPs), and alternative plasticizers (APs), was investigated in the indoor dust and air collected from floors, table surfaces, windows, and air conditioner (A/C) filters in bedrooms and offices in Guangzhou, South China. In bedrooms, A/C filter dust showed the highest median concentrations of PFRs (4670 ng/g) and ePFRs (586 ng/g), whilst the highest median concentrations of LPs and APs were found in floor (240,880 ng/g) and window dust (157,160 ng/g), respectively. In offices, A/C filter dust showed the highest median concentrations for PFRs (6750 ng/g) and APs (504,520 ng/g), while the highest ePFR median level was found in PC table dust (5810 ng/g) and LPs in floor dust (296,270 ng/g). Median air concentrations of PFRs, ePFRs, LPs, and APs were measured at 4.6, 0.12, 399, and 25 ng/m3 in bedrooms, and at 8.0, 0.05, 332, and 43 ng/m3 in offices, respectively. Tris(1-chloro-iso-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) was the predominant PFRs/ePFRs in both dust and air. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-iso-decyl phthalate (DIDP) and di-iso-nonyl phthalate (DINP) were the main LP/AP compounds in dust, whilst di-iso-butyl phthalate (DIBP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DNBP) were the most abundant LPs/APs in air. A significant correlation (p < 0.05) was found between dust and air levels for chemicals with log Koa < 14, indicating that equilibrium was achieved for these chemicals but not for those with log Koa > 14. Among the investigated human exposure pathways (i.e. dust ingestion, dermal absorption, and air inhalation), dust ingestion was the predominant one for all chemicals. Human exposures of this magnitude to these chemicals through the investigated pathways was unlikely to present a health risk in the present study.

Abstract:Exposure to phthalates has recently become a major public health concern. The information of indoor airborne phthalates and their air-particle partition in real indoor environmental condition is still limited. In this study, the gas- and PM2.5-concentrations of 7 phthalates in 40 residences were concurrently measured in summer and winter. The major phthalates (median concentration in the summer and winter, respectively) in indoor air were DMP (2442.3 and 2403.4 ng/m3), DiBP (801.0 and 640.0 ng/m3) and DnBP (5173.2 and 1379.6 ng/m3), whereas the major phthalates in PM2.5 were DiBP (1055.1 and 585.9 ng/m3) and DnBP (1658.5 and 1517.0 ng/m3) and DEHP (215.1 and 344.9 ng/m3). Air-PM2.5 partition coefficients (Kp) of DiBP, DnBP and DEHP were calculated: the summer and winter median values (m3/μg) were 0.053 and 0.011 for DiBP, 0.010 and 0.004 for DnBP, 0.021 and 0.025 for DEHP, respectively. Air-PM2.5 partition of DiBP and DnBP approached equilibrium, while that of DEHP did not reach equilibrium in either season. The impacts of built environmental conditions on phthalate concentrations were characterized. Elevated temperature resulted in accumulation of airborne phthalates. Higher air humidity led to more water absorption of aerosols in summer, facilitated mass transfer of phthalates from air to PM2.5, and resulted in greater Kp of DiBP and DnBP in the summer. Any factors such as proximity to local traffic highway and indoor smoking activities, which can increase indoor PM2.5 concentrations, resulted in significantly higher airborne phthalate concentrations. Improving ventilation was not an effective measure to reduce indoor airborne phthalate concentrations.

Abstract:Phthalate esters, commonly used as plasticizers, can be found indoors in the gas phase, in airborne particulate matter, in dust, and on surfaces. The dynamic behavior of phthalates indoors is not fully understood. In this study, time-resolved measurements of airborne phthalate concentrations and associated gas-particle partitioning data were acquired in a normally occupied residence. The vapor pressure and associated gas-particle partitioning of measured phthalates influenced their airborne dynamic behavior. Concentrations of higher vapor pressure phthalates correlated well with indoor temperature, with little discernible influence from direct occupant activity. Conversely, occupant-related behaviors substantially influenced the concentrations and dynamic behavior of a lower vapor pressure compound, diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), mainly through production of particulate matter during cooking events. The proportion of airborne DEHP in the particle phase was experimentally observed to increase under higher particle mass concentrations and lower indoor temperatures in correspondence with theory. Experimental observations indicate that indoor surfaces of the residence are large reservoirs of phthalates. The results also indicate that two key factors influenced by human behavior-temperature and particle mass concentration-cause short-term changes in airborne phthalate concentrations.

Abstract:Phthalates are widely used as plasticizers in various products. However, only few studies have focused on its pollution in university dormitories and classrooms. In this study, we measured the airborne concentrations of phthalates in the dormitories and classrooms of a university in Beijing, China. We analyzed the pollution characteristics and possible sources of phthalates, used Monte Carlo simulation to estimate phthalate intake via inhalation and dermal absorption through direct air-through-skin pathways, and explored the seasonal variations in airborne phthalate concentrations and exposure levels. Di (2-methoxyethyl) phthalate and di-n-butyl phthalate were predominantly observed in the classroom and dormitory. Three possible phthalate sources existed in the classroom and dormitory. The airborne concentrations of high-molecular-weight phthalates were significantly higher in winter than those during spring and autumn. The room's orientation weakly affected the indoor airborne phthalate concentrations. More surface sinks in female dormitories significantly affected the concentration of airborne phthalates, which is worthy of a comprehensive study. Low-molecular-weight phthalates in the dormitory significantly differed between urban and suburban areas. The influences of orientation, dormitory type, and geographic location on indoor phthalate concentrations are related to the seasons. The total daily intake of phthalates in dormitories was greater than that in classrooms. The daily intake of phthalates via dermal absorption was greater than that via inhalation, and was the highest during winter.

Abstract:Indoor semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) can have a significant impact on human health. Previous studies involved the detection of limited classes of indoor SVOCs in different regions of China. However, overall indoor pollution profiles and the associated health risks via multiple exposure pathways remain unclear. High-throughput screening of SVOCs would help clarify the overall indoor pollution status and identify high-risk pollutants. We collected indoor air and dust samples from 35 Chinese homes and investigated the occurrence of a wide range of SVOCs. Ninety-seven SVOCs including phthalate esters (PAEs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), organophosphate esters, alcohols, fatty acids, phenols, etc., were detected in the air (total concentrations: 0.13–48 μg/m3; median: 3.4 μg/m3) and dust (total concentrations: 120–1500 μg/g; median: 490 μg/g) samples. PAEs were the most abundant, accounting for 55.3 ± 28.6% and 43.4 ± 16.9% of the total SVOC concentrations in the air and dust samples respectively. Human exposure and health risks of 34 SVOCs with detection frequencies >10% were assessed based on inhalation, ingestion and dermal absorption of SVOCs from air and dust by infants and adults. In the case of indoor SVOCs with log Koa 90% for adults and >69% for infants. The following five SVOCs in air samples posed significant non-carcinogenic risks and are listed based on their decreasing risk level: dibutyl phthalate > phenanthrene > stearic acid > methyl palmitate > lauryl alcohol. Four PAHs with 2–4 rings posed potential carcinogenic risks, with phenanthrene exceeding the acceptable risk level of 10−4. The high risks posed by SVOCs were due to inhalation exposure. Therefore, keeping the air concentrations of SVOCs, especially that of PAEs and PAHs under check would greatly benefit human health in indoor environments.

Abstract:We spend more than half of our daily time in indoor environments, and the contributions of phthalates present in it to total exposure are important. Here, we determined phthalate concentrations in paired indoor settled dust/air and their metabolites in human urine from 100 general families in south China to explore such kind of effect. The total concentrations of phthalates/metabolites were 48.7–2850 μg/g, 279–5080 ng/m3 and 10.7–2840 ng/mL in the indoor dust, air and urine samples, respectively. Among all targets, di-n-butyl phthalate, di-isobutyl phthalate and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and their metabolites were the predominant compounds. The daily intakes (DIs) of phthalates via dust or air decreased with age, except for infant, and the values of dust ingestion, air inhalation and air dermal uptake were 2720 ± 2460, 1300 ± 973 and 3590 ± 2890 ng/kg/day for toddlers and 236 ± 194, 360 ± 179 and 1120 ± 586 ng/kg/day for adults, respectively. The ratios of DIs from air to dust were greater than 1.0 for people in all age groups, and the ratio was the highest for adults. Furthermore, the contributions of phthalates from indoor dust and air to total DIs from all sources (estimated from urinary phthalate metabolites) were 0.60%–5.23% and 2.65%–12.2% for different ages, respectively. Our results indicated that indoor air was a quite important source for human exposure to phthalates in indoor environment in south China.

Abstract:Phthalate esters (PAEs) are ubiquitous in the indoor environment, owing to their use in consumer products. People spend a considerable amount of time indoors. As a result, human exposure to indoor contaminants is of great concern. People are exposed to phthalates through inhalation and dermal absorption of indoor air. In this study, the concentrations, characteristics and carcinogenic risks of gasphase and particle-phase phthalates in indoor air from bedroom, living room and study room of 10 newly decorated apartments in Hangzhou, China were first investigated. The mean concentration of phthalates (gas-phase and particle-phase) present in household air was 12 096.4 ng m(-3), of which diethyl phthalate (DEP), butylbenzyl phthalate (BBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the most abundant compounds with concentrations of 2290 ng m(-3), 3975 ng m(-3) and 2437 ng m(-3), respectively, totally accounting for 72.0% of Sigma(6)PAEs. Contamination levels of phthalates varied in different compartments. The concentration of phthalates was the highest 17363.7 ng m(-3) in living room, followed with 11 389.5 ng m(-3) in study room, and the lowest 9739.1 ng m(-3) in bedroom. It was also found that phthalates mainly accumulated in gaseous form in household air. DEHP posed the greatest health risk to children aged 1-2. Carcinogenic risk of DEHP was evaluated to be 3.912 x 10(-5), and was 39 times higher than the limit set by the U.S. EPA. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A number of retrospective and prospective series have assessed local control outcomes of brain metastases based on primary histology. 1–4 These studies have revealed mixed results, with some studies showing poorer local control with histologies typically classified as radioresistant, including melanoma and renal cell cancers. The cur-rent determinants of stereotactic radiation dose are lesion size and receipt of previous radiation treatment. 5 Histology does not routinely play a primary role in the determination of radiation dose. We have previously developed a multigene expression model of tumor radiosensitivity. 6 This model has been vali-dated in multiple independent clinical cohorts, including breast, rectal, esophageal, head and neck, glioblastoma, pan-creas, and prostate malignancies. 6 This model predicts a radiosensitivity index (RSI) that is directly proportional to tumor radioresistance (RSI, high index = radioresistance). Pollution Characteristics of 15 Gas- and Particle-Phase Phthalates in Indoor and Outdoor Air in Hangzhou

Abstract:Phthalate esters (PAEs), typical pollutants widely used as plasticizers, are ubiquitous in various indoor and outdoor environments. PAEs exist in both gas and particle phases, posing risks to human health. In the present study, we chose four typical kinds of indoor and outdoor environments with the longest average human residence times to assess the human exposure in Hangzhou, including newly decorated residences, ordinary residences, offices and outdoor air. In order to analyze the pollution levels and characteristics of 15 gas- and particle-phase PAEs in indoor and outdoor environments, air and particulate samples were collected simultaneously. The total PAEs concentrations in the four types of environments were 25,396, 25,466.8, 15,388.8 and 3616.2 ng/m3, respectively. DEHP and DEP were the most abundant, and DMPP was at the lowest level. Distinct variations in the distributions of indoor/outdoor, gas/particle-phase and different molecular weights of PAEs were observed, showing that indoor environments were the main sources of PAEs pollution. While most PAEs tended to exsit in indoor sites and gas-phase, the high-molecular-weight chemicals tended to exist in the particle-phase and were mainly found in PM2.5. PAEs were more likely adsorbed by small particles, especially for the indoor environments. There existed a good correlation between the particle matter concentrations and the PAEs levels. In addition, neither temperature nor humidity had obvious effects on the distributions of the PAEs concentrations.

Abstract:Phthalate esters (PAEs) are prevalent in both indoor and outdoor environments. However, there are relatively few studies on phthalate contamination in the air of multi-function areas. Experiments were conducted to analyze the concentrations of 14 distinct PAEs in outdoor air in the college town of Hangzhou throughout both the warm and cold seasons. Correlation and principal component analyses were performed to investigate the influence and source factors of PAEs. This study also focused on the relationship between the gas/particle partition coefficient Kp and temperature, as well as the application of the gas/particle partition model. The risk of exposure to PAEs via inhalation was predicted for four groups of the general population: toddlers, adolescents, adults, and older adults. The results indicated that the concentration levels of Σ14PAEs in outdoor air were 1573 ng/m3 in the gaseous phase and 126 ng/m3 in the particulate phase. Additionally, this study indicated three primary sources of PAEs: indoor diffuse sources, industrial emission sources, and building construction sources. The gas/particle partitioning of PAEs also revealed that low-molecular-weight PAEs are more prevalent in gas, whereas high-molecular-weight PAEs are more predominant in the particle phase. A health risk analysis revealed high estimations of daily intakes (EDI) for toddlers and adolescents and high lifetime average daily doses (LADD) for older adults. This study establishes a solid foundation for formulating scientific and effective air pollution control measures by analyzing the characteristics and assessing the health risks of PAEs.

Abstract:Phthalate and alternative plasticizers are semi volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) and among the most abundant indoor pollutants. Although ingestion of dust is one of the major exposure pathways to them, migration knowledge from source products to indoor dust is still limited. Systematic chamber measurements were conducted to investigate the direct transfer of these SVOCs between source products and dust in contact with the source. Substantial direct source-to-dust transfer of SVOCs was observed for all tests. The concentration of bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate in dust was 12 times higher than the pre-experimental level after only two days of source-dust contact. A mechanistic model was developed to predict the direct transfer process, and a reasonable agreement between model predictions and measurements was achieved. The octanol/air partition coefficient (K-oa) of SVOCs, the emission parameter of the source product (y(0)), and the characteristics of the dust layer (i.e., porosity and thickness) control the transfer, affecting the SVOC concentration in dust, the kinetics of direct transfer, or both. Dust mass loading has a significant influence on the transfer, while relative humidity only has a limited effect. The findings suggest that minimizing the use of SVOC-containing products and house vacuuming are effective intervention strategies to reduce young children's exposure to SVOCs.

Abstract:Phthalate acid esters (PAEs), as a common group of plasticizers, are widely present in indoor environments and pose a risk to human health. Indoor dust samples collected from dormitory, classroom, laboratory, and office in several universities in China, were analyzed for seven types of PAEs. The total concentrations of seven PAEs (Σ 7 PAEs) ranged from 4.87 to 360 μg/g, with a median concentration of 51 μg/g, which is lower than that reported by other studies. Using the median concentration of Σ 7 PAEs as a metric, we assessed the levels of contamination in different microenvironments, resulting in the following ranking: dormitory > classroom > laboratory > office. There are significant differences in the levels of individual PAEs in different microenvironments. Radiation from sunlight, ventilation rates, cleaning frequency, and sprays were influential factors for the concentrations of individual PAEs in indoor dust. The indoor environmental conditions and consumption patterns profoundly affect PAEs levels. The sources of PAEs in classroom and office were more complex than in dormitory and laboratory. Daily intakes of PAEs were used to calculate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic human risk for males and females, indicating a low health risk to humans. This is the first study to assess the risk of PAEs in university microenvironments and provides a valuable reference for further research.
