Abstract:Indirect methods have proven to be a complementary approach for extending our knowledge of nuclear structure and low-energy cross sections. Among these, the neutron-induced reaction cross sections appear to be of particular interest since their role both for unstable and stable beams. In view of this, we report here the combined study of the 17 O(n, α) 14 C reaction accomplished by the Trojan Horse Method (THM) and the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) method. The low-lying 8038, 8125, 8213, and 8282 keV resonances in 18 O are studied, and their Γ n are derived. A comparison with recent direct data and recent THM experimental data is presented. The independent ANC investigation corroborates our previous THM results, confirms the consistence of the two indirect investigations, and shows new frontiers for neutron-induced reactions with radioactive ion beams. Moreover, we examined the impact of adopting the newly recommended 17 O(n, α) 14 C reaction rate on asymptotic giant branch stars' nucleosynthesis. Our findings reveal significant variations (≳10%) in the production of the neutron-rich heavy isotopes sensitive to neutron density, underlining the neutron-poisoning effect of 17 O on the s-process.

Abstract:The evolution of massive stars with very low-metallicities depends critically on the amount of CNO nuclides which they produce. The $^{12}$N($p$,\,$\gamma$)$^{13}$O reaction is an important branching point in the rap-processes, which are believed to be alternative paths to the slow 3$\alpha$ process for producing CNO seed nuclei and thus could change the fate of massive stars. In the present work, the angular distribution of the $^2$H($^{12}$N,\,$^{13}$O)$n$ proton transfer reaction at $E_{\mathrm{c.m.}}$ = 8.4 MeV has been measured for the first time. Based on the Johnson-Soper approach, the square of the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) for the virtual decay of $^{13}$O$_\mathrm{g.s.}$ $\rightarrow$ $^{12}$N + $p$ was extracted to be 3.92 $\pm$ 1.47 fm$^{-1}$ from the measured angular distribution and utilized to compute the direct component in the $^{12}$N($p$,\,$\gamma$)$^{13}$O reaction. The direct astrophysical S-factor at zero energy was then found to be 0.39 $\pm$ 0.15 keV b. By considering the direct capture into the ground state of $^{13}$O, the resonant capture via the first excited state of $^{13}$O and their interference, we determined the total astrophysical S-factors and rates of the $^{12}$N($p$,\,$\gamma$)$^{13}$O reaction. The new rate is two orders of magnitude slower than that from the REACLIB compilation. Our reaction network calculations with the present rate imply that $^{12}$N($p,\,\gamma$)$^{13}$O will only compete successfully with the $\beta^+$ decay of $^{12}$N at higher ($\sim$two orders of magnitude) densities than initially predicted.

Abstract:The C12(α,γ)O16 reaction, an important component of stellar helium burning, has a key role in nuclear astrophysics. It has significant impact on the evolution and final state of heavy to low mass stars, maximum mass of stellar formed black holes and also shapes the elemental abundances resulting from nucleosynthesis in such stars. Providing a reliable estimate for the energy dependence of this reaction at stellar helium burning temperatures has been a longstanding and important goal. In this work, we study the role of potential new E1 and E2 measurements of the O16(e,e′α)C12 reaction in reducing the overall uncertainty in the astrophysical S factor for the C12(α,γ)O16E1 and E2 ground state capture extrapolated to a stellar energy of 300 keV. A multilevel R -matrix analysis is used to make extrapolations of the SE1 (300 keV) and SE2 (300 keV) factors for the C12(α,γ)O16 reaction from existing ground state capture data. Bayesian analysis is used to quantify the uncertainties in the extrapolations for both the existing data alone and also when possible new experimental data are included. In particular, we consider a new experiment that would make use of a high-intensity low-energy electron beam that impinges on a windowless oxygen gas target as a means to determine the total E1 and E2 ground state cross sections for this reaction. We find that the new data could significantly reduce the S(300) uncertainties. Abstract:The ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\alpha,\gamma){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction plays a key role in the evolution of stars with masses of $M >$ 0.55 $M_\odot$. The cross-section of the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\alpha,\gamma){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction within the Gamow window ($E_\textrm{c.m.}$ = 300 keV, $T_\textrm9$ = 0.2) is extremely small (about $10^{-17}$ barn), which makes the direct measurement in a ground-based laboratory with existing techniques unfeasible. Up until now, the cross-sections at lower energies can only be extrapolated from the data at higher energies. However, two subthreshold resonances, located at $E_x$ = 7.117 MeV and $E_x$ = 6.917 MeV, make this extrapolation more complicated. In this work, the 6.917 MeV subthreshold resonance in the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}(\alpha,\gamma){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction was investigated via the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}({}^{11}\mathrm{B},{}^{7}\mathrm{Li}){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction. The experiment was performed using the Q3D magnetic spectrograph at the HI-13 tandem accelerator. We measured the angular distribution of the ${}^{12}\mathrm{C}({}^{11}\mathrm{B},{}^{7}\mathrm{Li}){}^{16}\mathrm{O}$ transfer reaction leading to the 6.917 MeV state. Based on the FRDWBA analysis, we derived the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) of the 6.917 MeV level in $^{16}$O to be (1.10 $\pm$ 0.29) $\times 10^{10}$ fm$^{-1}$, with which the reduced $\alpha$ width was computed to be $18.0\pm4.7$ keV at the channel radius of 6.5 fm. Finally, we calculated the astrophysical $S_{E2}(300)$ factor of the ground-state transitions to be 46.2 $\pm$ 7.7 keV b. The result for the astrophysical $S_{E2}(300)$ factor confirms the values obtained in various direct and indirect measurements and presents an independent examination of the most important data in nuclear astrophysics.

Abstract:The $^{12}{\rm C}(\alpha,\gamma)^{16}$O reaction, determining the survival of carbon in red giants, is of interest for nuclear reaction theory and nuclear astrophysics. A specific feature of the $^{16}$O nuclear structure is the presence of two subthreshold bound states, (6.92 MeV, 2$^+$) and (7.12 MeV, 1$^-$), that dominate the behavior of the low-energy $S$-factor. The strength of these subthreshold states is determined by their asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs), which need to be known with high accuracy. Recently, using a model-independent extrapolation method, Blokhintsev {\it et al.} [Eur. Phys. J. A {\bf 59} (2023) 162] determined the ANCs for the $\alpha$-particle removal taking into account three subthreshold states in $^{16}$O. The goal of this paper is to address four main problems elucidating the impact of the subthreshold ANCs on the low-energy $S$-factor. Firstly, we analyse the connection between variations of the subthreshold ANCs and the low-energy $S$-factor, in particular, at the most effective energy of $300$ keV. Secondly, we calculate contributions to the $S(300\,{\rm keV})$-factor from the subthreshold $1^{-}$ and $2^{+}$ resonances, that are controlled by the subthreshold ANCs. We also evaluate the contribution of the uncertainties of the subthreshold ANCs to the budget of the low-energy $S$-factor uncertainty, especially, the $S(300\,{\rm keV})$-factor. Thirdly, we analyse interference of the subthreshold resonances (SRs) with higher resonances and with the $E1$ and $E2$ direct captures to the ground state. Finally, we investigate a correlated effect of the subthreshold and ground-state ANCs on the low-energy $S$-factor and, in particular, on the $S(300\,{\rm keV})$-factor.

Abstract:The ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O reaction is the main neutron source for the slow-neutron-capture process in asymptotic giant branch stars and for the intermediate process. Direct measurements at astrophysical energies in above-ground laboratories are hindered by the extremely small cross sections and vast cosmic-ray-induced background. We performed the first consistent direct measurement in the range of E_{c.m.}=0.24 to 1.9 MeV using the accelerators at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory and Sichuan University. Our measurement covers almost the entire intermediate process Gamow window in which the large uncertainty of the previous experiments has been reduced from 60% down to 15%, eliminates the large systematic uncertainty in the extrapolation arising from the inconsistency of existing datasets, and provides a more reliable reaction rate for the studies of the slow-neutron-capture and intermediate processes along with the first direct determination of the alpha strength for the near-threshold state.

Abstract:Indirect methods have become the predominant approach in experimental nuclear astrophysics for studying several low-energy nuclear reactions occurring in stars, as direct measurements of many of these relevant reactions are rendered infeasible due to their low reaction probability. Such indirect methods, however, require theoretical input that in turn can have significant poorly quantified uncertainties, which can then be propagated to the reaction rates and have a large effect on our quantitative understanding of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis processes. We present two such examples involving α -induced reactions, C13(α,n)O16 and C12(α,γ)O16 , for which the low-energy cross sections have been constrained with (Li6,d) transfer data. In this Letter, we discuss how a first-principle calculation of Li6 leads to a 21% reduction of the C12(α,γ)O16 cross sections with respect to a previous estimation. This calculation further resolves the discrepancy between recent measurements of the C13(α,n)O16 reaction and points to the need for improved theoretical formulations of nuclear reactions. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.L061601 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The $^{13}{\rm C}(\alpha,n)^{16}{\rm O}$ reaction is considered to be the main neutron source responsible for the production of heavy nuclides (from ${\rm Sr}$ to ${\rm Bi}$) through slow $n$-capture nucleosynthesis ($s$-process) at low temperatures during the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase of low mass stars ($\lesssim 3-4\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$, or LMSs). In recent years, several direct and indirect measurements have been carried out to determine the cross section at the energies of astrophysical interest (around $190\pm40\;{\rm keV}$). However, they yield inconsistent results causing a highly uncertain reaction rate and affecting the neutron release in LMSs. In this work we have combined two indirect approaches, the asymptotic normalization coefficient (or ANC) and the Trojan Horse Method (THM), to unambiguously determine the absolute value of the $^{13}{\rm C}(\alpha,n)^{16}{\rm O}$ astrophysical factor. Therefore, we have determined a very accurate reaction rate to be introduced into astrophysical models of $s$-process nucleosynthesis in LMSs. Calculations using such recommended rate have shown limited variations in the production of those neutron-rich nuclei (with $86\leq A\leq 209$) receiving contribution only by slow neutron captures.

Abstract:$^{13}$N($p,\gamma$)$^{14}$O is one of the key reactions in the hot CNO cycle which occurs at stellar temperatures around $T_9$ $\geq$ 0.1. Up to now, some uncertainties still exist for the direct capture component in this reaction, thus an independent measurement is of importance. In present work, the angular distribution of the $^{13}$N($d,n$)$^{14}$O reaction at $E_{\rm{c.m.}}$ = 8.9 MeV has been measured in inverse kinematics, for the first time. Based on the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis, the nuclear asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC), $C^{^{14}O}_{1,1/2}$, for the ground state of $^{14}$O $\to$ $^{13}$N + $p$ is derived to be $5.42 \pm 0.48$ fm$^{-1/2}$. The $^{13}$N($p,\gamma$)$^{14}$O reaction is analyzed with the R-matrix approach, its astrophysical S-factors and reaction rates at energies of astrophysical relevance are then determined with the ANC. The implications of the present reaction rates on the evolution of novae are then discussed with the reaction network calculations.

Abstract:The 12C(p,{\gamma})13N reaction is the onset process of both the CNO and Hot CNO cycles that drive massive star, Red and Asymptotic Giant Branch star and novae nucleosynthesis. The 12C(p,{\gamma})13N rate affects the final abundances of the stable 12,13C nuclides, with ramifications for meteoritic carbon isotopic abundances and the s-process neutron source strength. Here, a new underground measurement of the 12C(p,{\gamma})13N cross-section is reported. The present data, obtained at the Felsenkeller shallow-underground laboratory in Dresden (Germany), encompass the 320-620 keV center of mass energy range to include the wide and poorly constrained E = 422 keV resonance that dominates the rate at high temperatures. This work S-factor results, lower than literature by 25%, are included in a new comprehensive R-matrix fit, and the energy of the 1+ first excited state of 13N is found to be 2369.6(4) keV, with radiative and proton width of 0.49(3) eV and 34.9(2) keV respectively. A new reaction rate, based on present R-matrix fit and extrapolation, is suggested.

Abstract:The degree to which the (p,gamma) and (p,alpha) reactions destroy 18F at temperatures 1-4x10^8 K is important for understanding the synthesis of nuclei in nova explosions and for using the long-lived radionuclide 18F, a target of gamma-ray astronomy, as a diagnostic of nova mechanisms. The reactions are dominated by low-lying proton resonances near the 18F+p threshold (E_x=6.411 MeV in 19Ne). To gain further information about these resonances, we have used a radioactive 18F beam from the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility to selectively populate corresponding mirror states in 19F via the inverse d(18F,p)19F neutron transfer reaction. Neutron spectroscopic factors were measured for states in 19F in the excitation energy range 0-9 MeV. Widths for corresponding proton resonances in 19Ne were calculated using a Woods-Saxon potential. The results imply significantly lower 18F(p,gamma)19Ne and 18F(p,alpha)15O reaction rates than reported previously, thereby increasing the prospect of observing the 511-keV annihilation radiation associated with the decay of 18F in the ashes ejected from novae.

Abstract:The $^{15}$N($\alpha,\gamma$)$^{19}$F reaction produces $^{19}$F in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, where the low energy tails of two resonances at $E_{\rm{c.m.}} = 1323 \pm 2$ and $1487 \pm 1.7$ keV are estimated to contribute about $30\%$ of the total reaction rate in these environments. However, recent measurements have shown discrepancies in the energies, the strengths, and the corresponding alpha widths of these two resonances, resulting in an increase in the systematic uncertainty of the extrapolated cross section to helium burning energies. With this motivation, we have undertaken new measurements of the $^{15}$N$(\alpha,\gamma)^{19}$F at the University of Notre Dame Nuclear Science Laboratory. The setup consisted of an alpha particle beam impinged on a solid Ti$^{15}$N target with gamma-ray spectroscopy accomplished using a high purity germanium detector. Using the Doppler corrected gamma-ray energies, we confirmed the lower resonance energy to be $1321.6 \pm 0.6$ keV and found a value for the higher one of $1479.4 \pm 0.6$ keV that is more consistent with those found from previous elastic scattering studies. We found that the resonance strengths for both were consistent with most values found in the literature, but a larger alpha width has been recommended for the $E_{\rm{c.m.}} = 1487$ keV resonance. The larger alpha width suggests a reaction rate increase of about $15\%$ at temperatures $T < 0.1$ GK relevant to low mass AGB stars. The impact of the increased reaction rate requires further investigations.

Abstract:The importance of studying the O16(n,α) reaction is motivated by multiple nuclear applications which rely on an accurate nuclear reaction data library for oxygen. Discrepancies between past experimental data on the O16(n,α)C13 reaction and its time-reverse C13(α,n)O16 reaction have led to various different nuclear data evaluations. We have measured O16(n,α) reaction cross sections using the LENZ instrument with the unmoderated white neutron source at LANSCE. Results from 2016/2017 data are discussed and used to benchmark the mcnp and geant simulations of the LENZ experimental setup. We report partial differential cross sections of O16(n,α0) at En=3.8–15 MeV and O16(n,α1+α2+α3) at En=9–15 MeV, based on the new measurement in 2021. The resonances that we observed are in good agreement with the levels in O17 that were previously measured. The LENZ cross sections are in better agreement with the ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluation than the with reduced cross section found in ENDF/B-VII.1 up to 6 MeV. However, the current results for O16(n,α0)Cg.s.13 appear to be in the best agreement over the entire energy range with that of JENDL/AN-2005 (ENDF/B-VI.0). https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.014601 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction plays a key role in the evolution of stars with masses of M > 0.55 M-circle dot. At the Gamow peak (E-c.m. = 300 keV, T-9 = 0.2), the cross section of the C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction is so small (about 10(-17) barn) that the direct measurement in ground laboratory is not feasible with the existing technology. Up to now, the cross sections at lower energies can only be extrapolated from the data at higher energies. However, two subthreshold resonances, locating at E-x = 7.117 MeV and E-x = 6.917 MeV, make this extrapolation more complicated. In this work the 6.917 MeV subthreshold resonance in the C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction was investigated via the C-12(B-11,Li-7)O-16 reaction. The experiment was performed using the Q3D magnetic spectrograph at HI-13 tandem accelerator. We measured the angular distribution of the C-12(B-11,Li-7)O-16 transfer reaction leading to the 6.917 MeV state. Based on DWBA analysis, we derived the square of ANC of the 6.917 MeV level in O-16 to be (2.45 +/- 0.28) x10(10) fm(-1), with which the reduced-alpha width can be computed. Finally, we calculated the astrophysical S (E2) factor of the 6.917 MeV resonance to be 67.6 +/- 7.7 keV b.

Abstract:We present a new measurement of the α-spectroscopic factor (Sα=0.37±0.12) and the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC2=(4.0±1.1) fm-1) for the 6.356 MeV 1/2+ subthreshold state of 17O through the angular distribution of the 13C(11B, 7Li)17O transfer reaction, as shown in Fig. 1.

Abstract:The $^{13}$C($\alpha$,$n$)$^{16}$O reaction is the main neutron source for the slow-neutron-capture (s-) process in Asymptotic Giant Branch stars and for the intermediate (i-) process. Direct measurements at astrophysical energies in above-ground laboratories are hindered by the extremely small cross sections and vast cosmic-ray induced background. We performed the first consistent direct measurement in the range of $E_{\rm c.m.}=$0.24 MeV to 1.9 MeV using the accelerators at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) and Sichuan University. Our measurement covers almost the entire i-process Gamow window in which the large uncertainty of the previous experiments has been reduced from 60\% down to 15\%, eliminates the large systematic uncertainty in the extrapolation arising from the inconsistency of existing data sets, and provides a more reliable reaction rate for the studies of the s- and i-processes along with the first direct determination of the alpha strength for the near-threshold state.
