Abstract:The development of materials and strategies that can influence stem cell attachment, proliferation, and differentiation towards osteoblasts is of high interest to promote faster healing and reconstructions of large bone defects. Graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide) have received increasing attention for biomedical applications as they present remarkable properties such as high surface area, high mechanical strength, and ease of functionalization. These biocompatible carbon-based materials can induce and sustain stem cell growth and differentiation into various lineages. Furthermore, graphene has the ability to promote and enhance osteogenic differentiation making it an interesting material for bone regeneration research. This paper will review the important advances in the ability of graphene and its related forms to induce stem cells differentiation into osteogenic lineages.
Graphene-Induced Osteogenic Differentiation is Mediated by the Integrin/FAK Axis

Abstract:Graphene is capable of promoting osteogenesis without chemical induction. Nevertheless, the underlying mechanism(s) remain largely unknown. The objectives here were: (i) to assess whether graphene scaffolds are capable of supporting osteogenesis in vivo and; (ii) to ascertain the participation of the integrin/FAK mechanotransduction axis during the osteogenic differentiation induced by graphene. MSC-impregnated graphene scaffolds (n = 6) were implanted into immunocompromised mice (28 days). Alternatively, MSCs were seeded onto PDMS substrates (modulus of elasticity = 130, 830 and 1300 kPa) coated with a single monomolecular layer of graphene and cultured in basal medium (10 days). The ensuing expressions of FAK-p397, integrin, ROCK1, F-actin, Smad p1/5, RUNX2, OCN and OPN were evaluated by Western blot (n = 3). As controls, MSCs were plated onto uncoated PDMS in the presence of mechanotransduction inhibitors (echistatin, Y27632 and DMH1). MSC-impregnated graphene scaffolds exhibited positive immunoexpression of bone-related markers (RUNX2 and OPN) without the assistance of osteogenic inducers. In vitro, regardless of the stiffness of the underlying PDMS substrate, MSCs seeded onto graphene-coated PDMS substrates demonstrated higher expressions of all tested osteogenic and integrin/FAK proteins tested compared to MSCs seeded onto PDMS alone. Hence, graphene promotes osteogenesis via the activation of the mechanosensitive integrin/FAK axis.
Protein Nanofibril Assemblies Templated by Graphene Oxide Nanosheets Accelerate Early Cell Adhesion and Induce Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells.

Abstract:Bombyx mori silk fibroin (SF) is a promising natural biocompatible protein. However, its interaction with graphene oxide (GO) has never been studied and the resultant SF/GO matrix has not been used to direct stem cell fate. Herein, we found out that mixing SF molecules and GO nanosheets in an aqueous solution can trigger the assembly of SF nanoparticles into oriented nanofibrils due to the guidance of GO nanosheets, forming SF/GO films with unique nanotopographies and improved modulus upon the removal of the solvent. When GO mass percentage in the SF/GO films is 2 and 10%, the SF assemblies are necklace-like nanofibrils (assembled from loosely linked SF nanoparticles) and solid nanofibrils (assembled from densely linked SF nanoparticles) in the resultant films, termed SG2 and SG10, respectively. GO nanosheets guided the SF assembly into nanofibrils by triggering the structural change of SF molecules from random coils to β-sheets, as confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and circular dichroism measurements. Furthermore, oxidative groups in the GO nanosheets were reduced by the reducing groups in SF during the nanofibril formation according to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The reduction of the oxidative groups in GO by SF was further verified by the good cell viability on the SF/GO films. The unique nanotopographies of the SF/GO films were found to accelerate the early cell adhesion and induce the osteogenic differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) even in the absence of additional inducers in the medium. More importantly, SG10 presents a stronger capability in promoting early MSC adhesion by promoting F-actin assembly, increasing cell spreading area, and inducing the osteogenic differentiation of the MSCs by the unique SF/GO nanofibrous matrix. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first report that the SF/GO substrates can induce the osteogenic differentiation of MSCs in the absence of osteogenic differentiation medium. Therefore, SF/GO composite materials would have a potential application in the field of bone tissue engineering.
Graphene oxide coated Titanium Surfaces with Osteoimmunomodulatory Role to Enhance Osteogenesis

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) and its derivatives are currently being explored for the modification of bone biomaterials. However, the effect of GO coatings on immunoregulation and subsequent impacts on osteogenesis are not known. In this study, GO was coated on pure titanium using dopamine. GO-coated titanium (Ti-GO) surfaces exhibited good biocompatibility, with the ability to stimulate the expression of osteogenic genes, and extracellular matrix mineralization in human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSCs). Interestingly, it was found that GO-coated surfaces could manipulate the polarization of macrophages and expression of inflammatory cytokines via the Toll-like receptor pathway. Under physiological conditions, Ti-GO activated macrophages and induced mild inflammation and a pro-osteogenic environment, characterized by a slight increase in the levels of proinflammatory cytokines, as well as increased expression of the TGF-β1 and oncostatin M genes. In an environment mimicking acute inflammatory conditions, Ti-GO attenuated inflammatory responses, as shown by the downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines. Conditioned medium collected from macrophages stimulated by Ti-GO played a significant stimulatory role in the osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. In summary, GO-coated surfaces displayed beneficial immunomodulatory effects in osteogenesis, indicating that GO could be a potential substance for the modification of bone scaffolds and implants.
Effect of graphene oxide in an injectable hydrogel on the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is widely used in bone tissue engineering due to its good biocompatibility and proliferation, and is often used in combination with other hydrogels, which not only reduces the cytotoxicity of GO but also improves the mechanical properties of the hydrogels. We developed injectable carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC)/hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC)/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)/GO hydrogel via hydrogen bonding cross-linked between (CMC) and (HEC), also, calcium cross-linked by β-TCP was also involved to further improvement of mechanical properties of the hydrogel, and incorporate different concentration of GO in these hydrogel systems. The characterization of the novel hydrogel was tested by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The swelling ratio and mechanical properties were investigated, the results showed that the addition of GO was able to reduce the swelling rate of hydrogels and improve their mechanical properties, with the best effect in the case of 1 mg/mL content. In vivo experimental studies showed that the hydrogel significantly promoted the osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs), with the best effect at a concentration of 2 mg/mL. The results of the cellular experiments were similar. Therefore, the novel environment-friendly and non-toxic injectable CMC/HEC/β-TCP/GO hydrogel system may have potential applications in bone tissue engineering.
Low-dose Suspended Graphene Oxide Nanosheets Induce Antioxidant Response and Osteogenic Differentiation of Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Via JNK-dependent FoxO1 Activation

Abstract:Large bone defects caused by bone-related diseases and traumatic injuries can disrupt the self-healing potential of bone tissue. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are known as promising cell sources for bone tissue regeneration. Graphene oxide (GO), a derivative of graphene, has been recently used for controlling the differentiation of stem cells towards bone-forming cells. However, the effect of GO on the intracellular redox system in MSCs is still unknown. In this study, we found that low-dose GO nanosheets (0.1 μg mL-1) did not affect the viability and slightly increased the proliferation of BM-MSCs. Moreover, they could also maintain the redox balance by upregulating the antioxidant genes such as MnSOD and catalase during osteogenic differentiation. The osteoinductive and antioxidative effects of the low-dose GO nanosheets were regulated by the activation and nuclear localization of FoxO1, and its activation was dependent on the JNK activity. The blockade of JNK activity by SP600125 inhibited the nuclear translocation of FoxO1, and subsequently suppressed the osteogenic differentiation and antioxidant defense system of BM-MSCs. Overall, our results show that the osteoinductive and antioxidative effects of low-dose GO nanosheets occur through the activation of the JNK and FoxO1 signaling pathways.

Abstract:Biomaterials that can harness the intrinsic osteogenic potential of stem cells offer a promising strategy to accelerate bone regeneration and repair. Previously, we had used methacrylated gelatin (GelMA)-based scaffolds to achieve bone formation from human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs). In this study, we aimed to further enhance hMSC osteogenesis by incorporating graphene oxide (GO)-based nanosheets into GelMA. In vitro results showed high viability and metabolic activities in hMSCs encapsulated in the newly developed nanocomposite. Incorporation of GO markedly increased mineralization within hMSC-laden constructs, which was further increased by replacing GO with silica-coated graphene oxide (SiGO). Mechanistic analysis revealed that the nanosheet enhanced the production, retention, and biological activity of endogenous bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), resulting in robust osteogenesis in the absence of exogenous osteoinductive growth factors. Specifically, the osteoinductive effect of the nanosheets was abolished by inhibiting the BMP signaling pathway with LDN-193189 treatment. The bone formation potential of the technology was further tested in vivo using a mouse subcutaneous implantation model, where hMSCs-laden GO/GelMA and SiGO/GelMA samples resulted in bone volumes 108 and 385 times larger, respectively, than the GelMA control group. Taken together, these results demonstrate the biological activity and mechanism of action of GO-based nanosheets in augmenting the osteogenic capability of hMSCs, and highlights the potential of leveraging nanomaterials such as GO and SiGO for bone tissue engineering applications.This study demonstrates the mechanism of action of graphene oxide nanosheets in augmenting bone regeneration.

Abstract:: This paper provides a review of the applications of some graphene oxide-based hydrogels in bone tissue engineering. Hydrogels used in bone tissue engineering usually require suitable biocompatibility, porosity, and mechanical strength. Under the original hydrogel condition, by adding GO, the various indexes of the composite hydrogel can reach more suitable conditions for inducing bone defect healing. This article also introduces some high-performance graphene oxide-based hydrogels, which are likely to play an important role in bone tissue engineering in the future.

Abstract:Successful bone defect repair requires a favorable immunomodulation. Macrophages are among the frontline cells activated after biomaterial implantation, and biomaterials play a role in the final determination of their fate. The surface properties of biomaterials such as roughness and hydrophilicity can activate macrophages to have an anti-inflammatory phenotype for improving tissue regeneration. Because of its known characteristics, graphene oxide (GO) is widely used in the biomaterials field. GO directly promotes stem cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation, properties that have been extensively investigated. The aim of this study is to research the effects of the surface-based modified three-dimensional (3D) porous bioactive glass (BG)/GO scaffolds on macrophage activation and bone regeneration. In vivo, compared with the control group receiving BG with a relatively smooth surface, the group receiving the porous implant showed a decreased proinflammatory response in the skin around the implant with increasing GO density, and the 3D porous implant was covered with new bone tissue. In vitro, both Raw264.7 cells and rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) can adhere and stretch well on rough, hydrophilic BG/GO scaffolds. When Raw264.7 cells were cultured on scaffolds, GO significantly promoted the polarization of M0 macrophages to the M2 type to a certain extent and further promoted the secretion of osteogenic and angiogenic factors, enhancing the osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs and the angiogenesis of endothelial cells. Further experiments showed that the rough hydrophilic surface of BG/GO might lead to the upregulation of the surface-dependent WNT-3A protein induced by the enhancement of integrin signalling and the accumulation and activation of β-catenin protein in cells. However, excessive content of GO has the opposite regulatory result. These results demonstrate that BG/GO biomaterials with surface-based modification play an important role in bone repair by adjusting the response of macrophages to biomaterials through their surface properties.

Abstract:Abstract Graphene and its derivatives have shown fascinating potential in biomedical applications. However, the biocompatibility of graphene with vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and applications to vascular engineering have not been explored extensively. Using a rat aortic smooth muscle cell line, A7r5, as a VSMC model, we have explored the effects of graphene oxide (GO) on the growth and behaviours of VSMCs. Results demonstrated that GO had no obvious toxicity to VSMCs. Cells cultured on GO retained the expression of smooth muscle cell-specific markers CNN 1, ACTA 2 and SMTN , on both mRNA and protein levels. A wound healing assay demonstrated no effect of GO on cell migration. We also found that small-flaked GO favoured the proliferation of VSMCs, suggesting a potential of using surface chemistry or physical properties of GO to influence cell growth behaviour. These results provide insight into the suitability of GO as a scaffold for vascular tissue engineering.

Abstract:An unmet need in engineered bone regeneration is to develop scaffolds capable of manipulating stem cells osteogenesis. Graphene oxide (GO) has been widely used as a biomaterial for various biomedical applications. However, it remains challenging to functionalize GO as ideal platform for specifically directing stem cell osteogenesis. Herein, we report facile functionalization of GO with dopamine and subsequent bioactive glass (BG) to enhance stem cell adhesion, spreading, and osteogenic differentiation. On the basis of graphene, we obtained dopamine functionalized graphene oxide/bioactive glass (DGO/BG) hybrid scaffolds containing different content of DGO by loading BG nanoparticles on graphene oxide surface using sol-gel method. To enhance the dispersion stability and facilitate subsequent nucleation of BG in GO, firstly, dopamine (DA) was used to modify GO. Then, the modified GO was functionalized with bioactive glass (BG) using sol-gel method. The adhesion, spreading, and osteoinductive effects of DGO/BG scaffold on rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (rBMSCs) were evaluated. DGO/BG hybrid scaffolds with different content of DGO could influence rBMSCs’ behavior. The highest expression level of osteogenic markers suggests that the DGO/BG hybrid scaffolds have great potential or elicit desired bone reparative outcome.
Osteoinductive and antimicrobial mechanisms of graphene‐based materials for enhancing bone tissue engineering

Abstract:Graphene-based materials (GMs) have great application prospects in bone tissue engineering due to their osteoinductive ability and antimicrobial activity. GMs induce osteogenic differentiation through several mechanisms and pathways in bone tissue engineering. First of all, the surface and high hardness of the porous folds of graphene or graphene oxide (GO) can generate mechanical stimulation to initiate a cascade of reactions that promote osteogenic differentiation without any chemical inducers. In addition, change of the extracellular matrix (ECM), regulation of macrophage polarization, the oncostatin M (OSM) signaling pathway, the MAPK signaling pathway, the BMP signaling pathway, the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway and other pathways are involved in GMs' regulation of osteogenesis. In bone tissue engineering, GMs prevent the formation of microbial biofilms mainly through preventing microbial adhesion and killing them. The former is mainly achieved by reducing surface free energy (SFE) and increasing hydrophobicity. The latter mainly includes oxidative stress and photothermal/photodynamic effects. Graphene and its derivatives (GDs) are mainly combined with bioactive ceramic materials, metal materials and macromolecular polymers to play an antimicrobial effect in bone tissue engineering. Concentration, number of layers and type of GDs often affect the antimicrobial activity of GMs. In this paper, we reviewed relevant osteoinductive and antimicrobial mechanisms of GMs and their applications in bone tissue engineering.This article is protected by copyright. A Novel Zwitterionic Hydrogel Incorporated with Graphene Oxide for Bone Tissue Engineering: Synthesis, Characterization, and Promotion of Osteogenic Differentiation of Bone Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Abstract:Zwitterionic materials are widely applied in the biomedical field due to their excellent antimicrobial, non-cytotoxicity, and antifouling properties but have never been applied in bone tissue engineering. In this study, we synthesized a novel zwitterionic hydrogel incorporated with graphene oxide (GO) using maleic anhydride (MA) as a cross-linking agent by grafted L-cysteine (L-Cys) as the zwitterionic material on maleilated chitosan via click chemistry. The composition and each reaction procedure of the novel zwitterionic hydrogel were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), while the morphology was imaged by scanning electron microscope (SEM). In vitro cell studies, CCK-8 and live/dead assay, alkaline phosphatase activity, W-B, and qRT-CR tests showed zwitterionic hydrogel incorporated with GO remarkably enhanced the osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs); it is dose-dependent, and 2 mg/mL GO is the optimum concentration. In vivo tests also indicated the same results. Hence, these results suggested the novel zwitterionic hydrogel exhibited porous characteristics similar to natural bone tissue. In conclusion, the zwitterionic scaffold has highly biocompatible and mechanical properties. When GO was incorporated in this zwitterionic scaffold, the zwitterionic scaffold slows down the release rate and reduces the cytotoxicity of GO. Zwitterions and GO synergistically promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs in vivo and in vitro. The optimal concentration is 2 mg/mL GO.

Defining the immunological compatibility of graphene oxide-loaded PLGA scaffolds for biomedical applications

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO), a carbon-based nanomaterial, presents significant potential across biomedical fields such as bioimaging, drug delivery, biosensors, and phototherapy. This study examines the effects of integrating GO into poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) scaffolds on human immune cell function. Our results demonstrate that high concentrations of GO reduce the viability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) following stimulation with anti-CD3 antibody. This reduction extends to T lymphocyte activation, evident from the diminished proliferative response to T cell receptor engagement and impaired differentiation into T helper subsets and regulatory T cells. Interestingly, although GO induces a minimal response in resting monocytes, but it significantly affects both the viability and the differentiation potential of monocytes induced to mature toward M1 pro-inflammatory and M2-like immunoregulatory macrophages. This study seeks to address a critical gap by investigating the in vitro immunomodulatory effects of PLGA scaffolds incorporating various concentrations of GO on primary immune cells, specifically PBMCs isolated from healthy donors. Our findings emphasize the need to optimize the GO to PLGA ratios and scaffold design to advance PLGA-GO-based biomedical applications. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Graphene oxide (GO) holds immense promise for biomedical applications due to its unique properties. However, concerns regarding its potential to trigger adverse immune responses remain. This study addresses this critical gap by investigating the in vitro immunomodulatory effects of PLGA scaffolds incorporating increasing GO concentrations on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). By elucidating the impact on cell viability, T cell proliferation and differentiation, and the maturation/polarization of antigen-presenting cells, this work offers valuable insights for designing safe and immunologically compatible GO-based biomaterials for future clinical translation.

The aim of this study was to produce GO-modified β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP-GRA) bioceramics and then explore the material’s osteogenic capacity in vitro and in vivo, as well as unravel some of the molecular mechanisms behind this. β-TCP-GRA disks and scaffolds were successfully prepared by a simple GO/water suspension soaking method in combination with heat treatment. These scaffolds were found to significantly enhance the proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, and osteogenic gene expression of human bone marrow stromal cells (hBMSCs), when compared with β-TCP without GO modification (controls). Activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in hBMSCs appears to be the mechanism behind this osteogenic induction by β-TCP-GRA. β-TCP-GRA scaffolds led to an increased rate of in vivo new bone formation compared to β-TCP controls, indicative of the stimulatory effect of GO on in vivo osteogenesis, making GO modification of β-TCP a very promising method for applications in bone tissue engineering, in particular for the regeneration of large bone defects.

Improved Biocompatibility and Osteogenesis of Porous Graphene Oxide/silk Fibroin Scaffold for Potential Applications in Bone Tissue Engineering

Abstract:To better mimic the inherent porous architecture of the natural bone, we fabricated graphene oxide/silk fibroin (GO/SF) scaffolds using a salting leaching method, followed by in situ reduction and reinforcement with ascorbic acid. SEM images revealed that the scaffolds exhibited an interconnectivity porous structure both on the surface and throughout the interior. We found that the pore size could be readily adjusted by varying the concentration of GO in the scaffolds. FTIR results demonstrated that the addition of GO didn't form chemical interaction between GO and SF, but it significantly increased the content of beta-sheet structure from 46.36 % to 51.12 % and improved the thermal stability of the scaffolds. Moreover, the reduced graphene oxide/silk fibroin (rGO/SF) scaffolds exhibited a superior capacity to promote the adhesion, proliferation, and mineral deposition of mouse mesenchymal stem cell (MSCs) when compared to pure SF scaffolds. Notably, the equilibrium Young's modulus of the scaffolds gradually increased from 5.5 +/- 0.5 KPa to 14.6 +/- 2.1 KPa with the increment of rGO content. Osteogenic differentiation with higher BSP (2. 84-fold) and RUNX2 (2.91-fold) expression level was also observed in 3 % rGO scaffold, suggesting a strong inclination towards bone formation. Based on these findings, the prepared rGO/SF scaffold in this study hold great potential as a viable option for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract:As a biocompatible and low cytotoxic nanomaterial, graphene oxide (GO) has captured tremendous interests in tissue engineering. However, little is known about the behavior of dental stem cells on GO. This study was to evaluate the bioactivity of human periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) on GO coated titanium (GO-Ti) substrate in vitro as compared to sodium titanate (Na-Ti) substrate. By scanning electron microscope (SEM), confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM), methylthiazol tetrazolium (MTT) assay, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blot analysis, we investigated the attachment, morphology, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of PDLSCs on these two substrates. When seeded on GO-Ti substrate, PDLSCs exhibited significantly higher proliferation rate, ALP activity and up-regulated gene expression level of osteogenesis-related markers of collagen type I (COL-I), ALP, bone sialoprotein (BSP), runt related transcription factor 2 (Runx2) and osteocalcin (OCN) compared with those on Na-Ti substrate. Moreover, GO promoted the protein expression of BSP, Runx2 and OCN. These findings suggest that the combination of GO and PDLSCs provides a promising construct for regenerative dentistry.

Abstract:A coordinated interaction between osteogenesis and the osteoimmune microenvironment plays a vital role in regulating bone healing. However, disturbances in the pro- and anti-inflammatory balance hinder the therapeutic advantages of biomaterials. In this study, a novel composite hydrogel was successfully fabricated using graphene oxide (GO)-loaded processed pyritum (PP) in combination with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC). Subsequently, the immunomodulatory effects and bone regenerative potential of PP//CMC were investigated. The results demonstrated that the PP//CMC hydrogel possessed excellent mechanical properties, swelling capacity, and stability. Moreover, PP//CMC prominently promoted M2 polarization and increased the levels of anti-inflammatory factors (interleukin (IL)-4, IL-10, and transforming growth factor-β). These beneficial effects facilitated the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in vitro. Additionally, the in vivo results further verified that the implantation of PP//CMC markedly reduced local inflammation while enhancing bone regeneration at 8 weeks post-implantation. Therefore, the results of this study provide potential therapeutic strategies for bone tissue repair and regeneration by modulating the immune microenvironment.

Abstract:Scaffold biomaterials with open pores and channels are favourable for cell growth and tissue regeneration, however the inherent poor mechanical strength and low surface activity limit their applications as load-bearing bone grafts with satisfactory osseointegration. In this study, macro-porous graphene oxide (GO) modified titanate nanowire scaffolds with desirable surface chemistry and tunable mechanical properties were prepared through a simple hydrothermal process followed by electrochemical deposition of GO nanosheets. The interconnected and porous structure of the GO/titanate nanowire scaffolds provides a large surface area for cellular attachment and migration and displays a high compressive strength of approximately 81.1 MPa and a tunable Young's modulus over the range of 12.4-41.0 GPa, which satisfies site-specific requirements for implantation. Surface chemistry of the scaffolds was modulated by the introduction of GO, which endows the scaffolds flexibility in attaching and patterning bioactive groups (such as -OH, -COOH and -NH2). In vitro cell culture tests suggest that the GO/titanate nanowire scaffolds act as a promising biomaterial candidate, in particular the one terminated with -OH groups, which demonstrates improved cell viability, and proliferation, differentiation and osteogenic activities.
