Abstract:We propose a unified statistical method based on deep learning and analysis to quantify the relative contributions of the global oceans to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) predictability. By incorporating subsurface signals in the Indian Ocean and Atlantic, the forecast lead can be skillfully extended by about one season. This skill enhancement mainly originates from the tropical Indian Ocean, presumably related to signals of the Indian Ocean Dipole passing to the tropical Pacific through the Indonesian Throughflow. The sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the Indian Ocean accounts for nearly 50% of surface contributions to both El Niño and La Niña predictions at a 15‐month lead. The north tropical Atlantic SSTA has a moderate impact on La Niña at a 9‐month lead. The Pacific Meridional Mode plays a significant role in both ENSO phases at a 12‐month lead. Thus, our study suggests that trans‐basin effects for ENSO are more vigorous than previously thought.

Abstract:Through its atmospheric teleconnections, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) shifts and disrupts weather and climate patterns far beyond the equatorial Pacific where it occurs, and occasionally has catastrophic consequences in many countries of the world. It is also the largest source of seasonal and interannual climate predictability. Despite its huge importance, ENSO forecasting is still not performed operationally at longer leads than about 6 months ahead. At the same time, there is mounting scientific evidence that forecasts are possible even more than a year in advance. Early warning of ENSO could substantially mitigate and help avoid some of the most damaging impacts, such as floods, droughts, harvest failure, famine, migration and disease outbreaks. Here, we present forecasts from a statistical ENSO model of the next El Niño predicted to occur in the winter of 2023/24, at lead times between 11 and 17 months ahead of an expected peak in December 2023. We use a statistical unobserved dynamic components model (EDCM) based on subsurface ocean temperatures as well as sea surface temperatures and zonal wind stress. EDCM has been previously validated through hindcasts of the major El Niños since 1970, and through real time forecasts of the 2015/16 and 2018/19 El Niños. Our statistical method and results indicate that there is potential for doubling the operational predictive lead time of ENSO to at least 12 months, with additional promise for even earlier anticipation of 19 months. Such longer-lead forecasts could be of high value, because decision-making and management in a number of key socio-economic sectors could be greatly improved.

Abstract:Atmospheric variability associated with the winter North Pacific Oscillation (NPO), preceding El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events by about 1 year, is driven mainly by the tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies but may also affect the subsequent ENSO. To isolate the latter, we conduct an idealized hindcast experiment using a climate model MIROC6, in which the NPO‐related surface heat flux and wind stress anomalies are overridden over the North Pacific. The ENSO evolution can be overall reproduced without the NPO forcing, confirming the predominant intrinsic predictability arising from the tropical coupled dynamics. However, the extratropical atmospheric forcing associated with the NPO, when it reaches three standard deviations, can enhance the ENSO development by about 29.6%, contrasting with limited effects of the moderate NPO forcing. La Niña events exhibit much less sensitivity to the NPO forcing compared to El Niño events, possibly due to asymmetric patterns of the simulated NPO.

Abstract:After the quick decaying of the 2015 super El Niño, the predicted La Niña unexpectedly failed to materialize to the anticipated standard in 2016. Diagnostic analyses, as well as numerical experiments, showed that this ENSO evolution of the 2015 super El Niño and the hindered 2016 La Niña may be essentially caused by sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the subtropical Pacific. The self-sustaining SSTAs in the subtropical Pacific tend to weaken the trade winds during boreal spring–summer, leading to anomalous westerlies along the equatorial region over a period of more than one season. Such long-lasting wind anomalies provide an essential requirement for ENSO formation, particularly before a positive Bjerknes feedback is thoroughly built up between the oceanic and atmospheric states. Besides the 2015 super El Niño and the hindered La Niña in 2016, there were several other El Niño and La Niña events that cannot be explained only by the oceanic heat content in the equatorial Pacific. However, the questions related to those eccentric El Niño and La Niña events can be well explained by suitable SSTAs in the subtropical Pacific. Thus, the leading SSTAs in the subtropical Pacific can be treated as an independent indicator for ENSO prediction, on the basis of the oceanic heat content inherent in the equatorial region. Because ENSO events have become more uncertain under the background of global warming and the Pacific decadal oscillation during recent decades, thorough investigation of the role of the subtropical Pacific in ENSO formation is urgently needed.
Asymmetric Influences of ENSO Phases on the Predictability of North Pacific Sea Surface Temperature

Abstract:The North Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) has a profound climatic influence. The El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) significantly impacts the North Pacific SST; however, the influence of the distinct phases of ENSO on SST predictability remains unclear. To overcome the model limitations, this study assessed SST predictability under diverse ENSO phases using reanalysis. The predictability limit of the North Pacific SST under La Niña (8.4 months) is longer than that under Neutral (5.9 months) and El Niño (5.5 months) conditions, which unveils asymmetry. This asymmetry mirrors contemporary multimodal prediction skills. Error growth dynamics reveal La Niña's robust signal strength with a slow error growth rate, in contrast to El Niño's weaker signal and faster error growth. There exhibits intermediate signal strength and elevated error growth in Neutral condition. Physically, predictability signal strength aligns with SST variability, whereas the error growth rate correlates with atmospheric‐ocean heating anomalies. La Niña, which induces positive heating anomalies, minimizes the impact of atmospheric noise, resulting in lower error growth. The result is beneficial for improving North Pacific SST predictions.

Abstract:The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the most important driver of interannual global climate variability and can trigger extreme weather events and disasters in various parts of the globe. Depending on the region of maximal warming, El Niño events can be partitioned into 2 types, Eastern Pacific (EP) and Central Pacific (CP) events. The type of an El Niño has a major influence on its impact and can even lead to either dry or wet conditions in the same areas on the globe. Here we show that the zonal difference $\Delta T_{WP-CP}$ between the sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) in the equatorial western Pacific and central Pacific gives an early indication of the type of an upcoming El Niño: When at the end of a year, $\Delta T_{WP-CP}$ is positive, an event in the following year will be probably an EP event, otherwise a CP event. Between 1950 and present, 3/4 of the EP forecasts and all CP forecasts are correct. When combining this approach with a previously introduced climate-network approach, we obtain reliable forecasts for both the onset and the type of an event: at a lead time of about one year, 2/3 of the EP forecasts and all CP forecasts in the regarded period are correct. The combined model has considerably more predictive power than the current operational type forecasts with a mean lead time of about 1 month and should allow early mitigation measures.

Explained predictions of strong eastern Pacific El Niño events using deep learning

Abstract:Global and regional impacts of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are sensitive to the details of the pattern of anomalous ocean warming and cooling, such as the contrasts between the eastern and central Pacific. However, skillful prediction of such ENSO diversity remains a challenge even a few months in advance. Here, we present an experimental forecast with a deep learning model (IGP-UHM AI model v1.0) for the E (eastern Pacific) and C (central Pacific) ENSO diversity indices, specialized on the onset of strong eastern Pacific El Niño events by including a classification output. We find that higher ENSO nonlinearity is associated with better skill, with potential implications for ENSO predictability in a warming climate. When initialized in May 2023, our model predicts the persistence of El Niño conditions in the eastern Pacific into 2024, but with decreasing strength, similar to 2015-2016 but much weaker than 1997-1998. In contrast to the more typical El Niño development in 1997 and 2015, in addition to the ongoing eastern Pacific warming, an eXplainable Artificial Intelligence analysis for 2023 identifies weak warm surface, increased sea level and westerly wind anomalies in the western Pacific as precursors, countered by warm surface and southerly wind anomalies in the northern Atlantic.

Abstract:Extratropical air–sea interactions have become increasingly involved in promoting the transition to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) with climate change. In this study, we break down the effects of future warming on the 1-year lead relationship between a cold western North Pacific (WNP) phase and El Niño development the following winter. We apply a conditional probability approach and sea surface temperature (SST) budget analysis on historical and Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 3–7.0 (SSP370) model runs. With enhanced warming, cold WNP SST anomalies in the boreal winter further strengthen summer westerly anomalies in the western equatorial Pacific, which promote the intensification of surface convergence and anomalous Ekman and geostrophic advection, and positive SST anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific in the seasons prior to the El Niño. Downwelling equatorial Kelvin waves induced by the westerly wind stress facilitate entrainment of subsurface water into the mixed layer during the transition period to trigger stronger thermocline feedback in the central–eastern equatorial Pacific. As a result, the amplitude and frequency of El Niño and its tropical precursors are projected to increase with warming under the WNP influence. ENSO diversity modulated by this relationship depends on the relative strength of advective and thermocline feedbacks, as well as the background state at the time of the event. The intensification of positive Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) southwesterlies during the WNP–ENSO transition suggests a strengthened three-way link between WNP, PMM and ENSO under enhanced warming that may promote stronger and/or more frequent El Niños.

Abstract:Abstract El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a huge influence on Antarctic climate variability via Rossby wave trains. In this study, the asymmetry of the ENSO teleconnection in the Southern Hemisphere, together with the mechanisms involved, is systematically investigated. In four reanalysis datasets, the composite atmospheric circulation anomaly in austral winter over the Amundsen Sea during La Niña is situated more to the west than during El Niño. This asymmetric feature is reproduced by ECHAM5.3.2 forced with both composite and idealized symmetric sea surface temperature anomalies. Utilizing a linear baroclinic model, we find that ENSO-triggered circulation anomalies in the subtropics can readily extract kinetic energy from the climatological mean flow and develop efficiently at the exit of the subtropical jet stream (STJ). The discrepancy in the location of the STJ between El Niño and La Niña causes asymmetric circulation responses by affecting the energy conversion. During El Niño years, anomalous tropical convective precipitation increases the meridional temperature gradient, which in turn leads to the strengthening of the STJ and the eastward movement of the jet core and jet exit in the Pacific. With the movement of the STJ exit, the wave train tends to develop over the eastern region. The opposite is the case during La Niña when the westward shift of the jet exit favors the development of the wave train in the western region. Our findings expand the current understanding regarding ENSO teleconnection.

Abstract:It is known that winter Atlantic-Niño events can induce the El Niño–Southern oscillation (ENSO) in the following winter with a lag of 1-year during one period. On the other hand, summer Atlantic-Niño events can lead to the ENSO in the subsequent winter with a half-year lag during another period. In this study, we investigate the distinct interdecadal modulation of the effect of the Atlantic-Niños on ENSO by analyzing observational reanalysis datasets. During the mid-twentieth century, the winter Atlantic-Niño exhibited increased intensity and extended westward due to warmer conditions in the tropical western Atlantic. As a result, convection occurred from the Amazon to the Atlantic, triggering an atmospheric teleconnection that led to trade wind discharging and equatorial Kelvin waves, ultimately contributing to the development of ENSO. In contrast, during late twentieth century, summer Atlantic-Niño events were closely linked to the South America low-level jet in boreal spring. This connection led to the formation of widespread and intense convection over the Amazon to the Atlantic region. Then, the Walker circulation was effectively modulated, subsequently triggering ENSO events. Further analysis revealed that the interdecadal modulation of the Atlantic–South America–Pacific mean state plays a crucial role in shaping the impact of Atlantic-Niños on ENSO by modifying not only the characteristics of the Atlantic-Niños but also ocean–atmospheric feedback process. Therefore, improving our understanding of the interdecadal modulation of the climatological mean state over the Pacific to Atlantic regions enables better anticipation of the interaction between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Abstract:This study investigates boreal spring events of Pacific Meridional Mode (PMM) from 1950 to 2022, revealing that cold PMM is more effective in triggering subsequent La Niña compared to warm PMM's induction of following El Niño. This asymmetry stems from the varying origins and sub‐efficacies of PMM groups. The cold PMM is primarily initiated by pre‐existing La Niña, while the warm PMM is comparably activated by pre‐existing El Niño and internal atmospheric dynamics. PMMs initiated by pre‐existing El Niño or La Niña play a crucial role in determining the efficacies of PMMs in triggering subsequent El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The strong discharge of pre‐existing El Niño hampers warm PMM's induction of subsequent El Niño, whereas weak recharge from pre‐existing La Niña enhances the efficacy of cold PMM in inducing subsequent La Niña. Comprehending not only the PMM phase but also its origin is crucial for ENSO research and prediction.

Abstract:Despite decades of research on forecasting the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the past decades, skillfully predicting the ENSO across the spring predictability barrier remains challenging. In this study, we utilize the ensemble of four model products to identify a new subsurface precursor consisting of the anomalous equatorial zonal velocity over 180°–150°W and 140–180 m and potential temperature in the western Pacific (over 120°–140°E and 120–160 m), which could predict the ENSO before spring by applying regression analysis. Such a precursor can predict the Niño 3.4 index in December at a lead time of 13 months with a regressed correlation of 0.79. The anomalous subsurface zonal velocity in the central Pacific favors the eastward migration of the warm water during the development of El Niño. Further validations with diverse training and application periods indicate that for initialization in November, this new precursor shows high skills in predicting the Niño 3.4 index at a lead time of 6–18 months over 1993–2016, outperforming counterparts for the other traditional precursors. Our study can help highlight the importance of subsurface processes in the ENSO development, improving our general ability to predict the ENSO, and enabling better preparedness for the implications of its occurrence.

Sea level anomalies in the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean as a potential predictor of La Niña beyond one-year lead

Abstract:Most climate forecast agencies failed to make successful predictions of the strong 2020/2021 La Niña event before May 2020. The western equatorial Pacific warm water volume (WWV) before the 2020 spring failed to predict this La Niña event because of the near neutral state of the equatorial Pacific Ocean in the year before. A strong Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) event took place in the fall of 2019, which is used as a precursor for the La Niña prediction in this study. We used observational data to construct the precursory relationship between negative sea level anomalies (SLA) in the southeastern tropical Indian Ocean (SETIO) in boreal fall and negative Niño 3.4 sea surface temperature anomalies index one year later. The application of the above relation to the prediction of the 2020/2021 La Niña was a great success. The dynamics behind are the Indo-Pacific "oceanic channel" connection via the Indian Ocean Kelvin wave propagation through the Indonesian seas, with the atmospheric bridge playing a secondary role. The high predictability of La Niña across the spring barrier if a positive IOD should occur in the previous year suggests that the negative SETIO SLA in fall is a much better and longer predictor for this type of La Niña prediction than the WWV. In comparison, positive SETIO SLA lead either El Niño or La Niña by one year, suggesting uncertainty of El Niño predictions.

Predictability of the Western North Pacific Subtropical High Associated with Different ENSO Phases in GloSea5

Abstract:The western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH) dominates the summer climate over East Asia. The intensity, position, and shape of WNPSH influence the spatiotemporal distributions of precipitation, temperature, and tropical cyclone activities in this region. This paper intends to investigate the performance of the UK Met Office Global Seasonal forecast system version 5 (GloSea5) in simulation/prediction of the WNPSH based on a hindcast dataset. Analyses of the hindcast data show a systematic bias in the mean circulation over West Pacific, with negative geopotential height anomalies over the western North Pacific (WNP) and cyclonic anomalies in the 850-hPa winds and water vapor transport, indicating a weakening and eastward shift of the WNPSH. Despite the model's bias in the climatology, it well captured the interannual variability of the monthly and seasonal-mean intensity of the WNPSH and the position of its ridge line in boreal summer from 1993 to 2015. The seasonal hindcasts indicate that there is significant prediction skill at up to three-month lead time for both the intensity and position of the WNPSH ridge line. The relationship between the WNPSH and different phases of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in both the observational data and GloSea5 hindcasts was then investigated. The model captured the summer WNPSH anomalies well during most of the ENSO phases, except in the La Niña decaying and neutral summers. The intensity of the anticyclone in the WNP is weak in the decaying phase of El Niño in the GloSea5 hindcasts compared with the reanalysis data. GloSea5 is capable of representing the lagged teleconnection between El Niño events in the previous winter and the intensity of the WNPSH in the following summer. Regression analysis reveals weakened negative sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) over the WNP in GloSea5, which reduced the gradient between the tropical western Pacific and the tropical Indian Ocean, resulting in a weaker easterly anomaly and stronger westerly anomaly, contributing to the weak anomalous anticyclone over the WNP and the weakened WNPSH relative to the reanalysis data.

Abstract:El Niño and the Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have a worldwide impact on seasonal to yearly climate. However, there are decadal variations in the seasonal prediction skill of ENSO in dynamical and statistical models; in particular, ENSO prediction skill has declined since 2000. The shortcomings of models mean that it is very important to study ENSO seasonal predictability and its decadal variation using observational/reanalysis data. Here we quantitatively estimate the seasonal predictability limit (PL) of ENSO from 1900 to 2015 using Nonlinear local Lyapunov exponent (NLLE) theory with an observational/reanalysis dataset and explore its decadal variations. The mean PL of sea surface temperature (SST) is high in the central/eastern tropical Pacific and low in the western tropical Pacific, reaching 12–15 and 7–8 months, respectively. The PL in the tropical Pacific varies on a decadal timescale, with an interdecadal standard deviation of up to 2 months in the central tropical Pacific that has similar spatial structure to the mean PL. Taking the PL of SST in the Niño 3.4 region as representative of the PL in the central/eastern tropical Pacific, there are clearly higher values in the 1900s, mid-1930s, mid-1960s, and mid-1990s, and lower values in the 1920s, mid-1940s, and mid-2010s. Meanwhile, the PL of SST in the Niño 6 region—whose average value is 7 months—is in good agreement with the PL of most regions in the western tropical Pacific, with higher values in the 1910s, 1940s, and 1980s and lower values in the 1930s, 1950s, and mid-1990s. In the framework of NLLE theory, the PL is determined by the error growth rate (representing the dissipation rate of the predictable signal) and the saturation value of relative error (representing predictable signal intensity). We reveal that the spatial structure of the mean PL in the tropical Pacific is determined mainly by the error growth rate. The decadal variability of PL is affected more by the variation of the saturation value of relative error in the equatorial Pacific, whereas the error growth rate cannot be ignored in the PL of some regions. As an important source of predictability in ENSO dynamics, the relationship between warm water volume and SST in the Niño 3.4 region has a critical role in the decadal variability of PL in the tropical Pacific through the error growth rate and saturation value of relative error. This strong relationship reduces the error growth rate in the initial period and increases the saturated relative error, contributing to the high PL.

Abstract:The influence of strong Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) events on the evolution of the following year's La Niña events is investigated using the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center (NMEFC) operational seasonal forecasting system. The observation results show that when the strong IOD occurs, the tropical Pacific can be in different sea surface temperature states. As such prediction system can well reproduce the air-sea evolution of the 1998/1999 and 2020/2021 La Niña events, the ocean temperature initializations in December during above events were perturbed with the system to assess the role of the oceanic channel and atmospheric bridge across the maritime continent in the forecasting of the La Niña events 1 year later. In the case of the neutral state of the tropical Pacific at the peak of the 2019 positive IOD, pacemaker experiments have demonstrated that the Indian Ocean subsurface temperature initialization in December 2019 is critically important for the successful prediction of the 2020/2021 La Niña. Experiments of sea surface temperature initialization in December 2019, with only the Indo-Pacific atmospheric bridge at work, failed to predict the 2020/2021 La Niña 1 year in advance. The comparison underlined the dominant role of the oceanic channel dynamics in the evolution of the 2020/2021 La Niña. Forecasting experiments beginning from the 1997/98 El Niño with and without the IOD initializations suggest that the delayed feedback of the tropical Pacific coupled system is more important in the forecasting of the 1998/1999 La Niña, with the Indo-Pacific oceanic channel dynamics playing a secondary yet very important role. Our study has underscored the importance of the Indo-Pacific oceanic channel dynamics in ENSO prediction and suggested the effectiveness of IOD subsurface temperature initialization in La Niña predictions at the 1-year lead time.

The Contribution of Boreal Spring South Pacific Atmospheric Variability to El Niño Occurrence

Abstract:Despite the fact that great efforts have been made to improve the prediction of El Niño events, it remains challenging because of limited understanding of El Niño and its precursors. This research focuses on the influence of South Pacific atmospheric variability on the development of the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the tropical Pacific. It is found that as early as in the boreal spring of El Niño years, the sea level pressure anomaly (SLPA) shows a configuration characterized by two significant negative anomaly centers in the north and a positive anomaly center in the south between the subtropics and high latitudes in South Pacific. Such an anomalous SLPA pattern becomes stronger in the following late boreal spring and summer associated with the strengthening of westerly anomalies in the tropical Pacific, weakening the southeasterly trade winds and promoting the warming of tropical eastern Pacific, which is conducive to the development of El Niño events. It is demonstrated that the SLPA pattern in boreal spring revealed in this study is closely associated with boreal summer South Pacific Oscillation (SPO) and South Pacific meridional mode (SPMM). As a precursor in boreal spring, the prediction skill of the South Pacific SLPA in boreal spring for the SSTA in the eastern equatorial Pacific is better than that of the SPMM. This study is helpful to deepen our understanding of the contribution of South Pacific extratropical atmospheric variability to El Niño occurrence.
Relationship between NPO and multi-year El Niño events in a 2200 years simulation of CESM1

Abstract:The boreal winter North Pacific Oscillation (NPO) has been proven to be a crucial trigger in the occurrence of multi-year El Niño events. However, the limited number of multi-year El Niño events in observational data (only five times since 1950) introduces certain limitations and uncertainties to the findings. Therefore, this study reexamines the relationship between the NPO and multi-year El Niño events using a 2200-year simulation of the Community Earth System Model, version 1. Our results demonstrate that the NPO can influence multi-year El Niño events through two pathways: (1) The thermodynamic process: the boreal winter NPO event, along with its forced North Pacific Meridional mode (NPMM), can trigger central Pacific (CP) El Niño event in the following winter. Meanwhile, this CP El Niño event then induces another NPO-like SLP variability over the North Pacific, which subsequently forces the generations of the NPMM again, providing favorable conditions for another El Niño event, eventually leading to a multi-year El Niño event. (2) The dynamic process: The consecutive NPO events and their related anomalous southwesterly wind stress over the subtropical North Pacific region can modify the wind stress curl of the central Pacific. These modified curls persist and further strengthen the equatorward anomalous Ekman transports from the northern off-equatorial and suppress the off-equatorward geostrophic transports, ultimately favoring the ongoing recharge process and leading to the prolonged or intensified El Niño events. Additionally, our findings suggest that the anomalies Ekman transport at 5°N can be a good ENSO precursor for 2–3 seasons in advance. These findings may provide valuable insights for predicting the evolution of ENSO diversity.

Influence of Spring Precipitation over Maritime Continent and Western North Pacific on the Evolution and Prediction of El Niño–Southern Oscillation

Abstract:Previous studies suggested that spring precipitation over the tropical western Pacific Ocean can influence the development of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). To identify crucial precipitation patterns for post-spring ENSO evolution, a singular value decomposition (SVD) method was applied to spring precipitation and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies, and three precipitation and ENSO types were obtained with each highlighting precipitation over the Maritime Continent (MC) or western north Pacific (WNP). High MC spring precipitation corresponds to the slow decay of a multi-year La Niña event. Low MC spring precipitation is associated with a rapid El Niño-to-La Niña transition. High WNP spring precipitation is related to positive north Pacific meridional mode and induces the El Niño initiation. Among the three ENSO types, ocean current and heat content behave differently. Based on these spring precipitation and oceanic factors, a statistical model was established aimed at predicting winter ENSO state. Compared to a full dynamical model, this model exhibits higher prediction skills in the winter ENSO phase and amplitude for the period of 1980–2022. The explained total variance of the winter Niño-3.4 index increases from 43% to 75%, while the root-mean-squared error decreases from 0.82 °C to 0.53 °C. The practical utility and limitations of this model are also discussed.

An Analysis of the ENSO Cycle Associated with the Equatorial Tropospheric Zonal Wind Anomalies over the Pacific Basin

Abstract:An analysis of the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle associated with the vertically-inte-grated equatorial tropospheric (1000–100hPa) zonal wind anomalies (ZWA) over the Pacific Basin ismade in this paper. The data sets used are the monthly US National Center of Environmental Prediction(NCEP) reanalysis wind and the NCEP monthly sea surface temperature (SST) from 1950 to 1998. Thewavelet analysis of both ZWA at different regions along the equator and SST anomaly in the equatorialeastern Pacific (EEP) shows that there are various phase-lag relationships between them in the interan-nual and interdecadal time-scales. In the equatorial western Pacific, the phase of ZWA in most events isearlier than that of EEP SST anomaly (or El Nino event) for about 7–13 months at the interannualtimescale. In the equatorial central Pacific, there is little phase-relationship between them. In the equa-torial eastern Pacific, the phase of EEP SST anomaly mostly is earlier than that of ZWA for about 4–9months while the positive ZWA leads positive SSTA about 18 months ahead. The phase of ZWA in theequatorial South America coast (ESAC) leads that of the EEP SST anomaly about 6 months in advance.In the equatorial western Pacific and ESAC, the El Nino event appears basically when the ZWA trans-forms from westerlies to easterlies while the La Nina event takes place in the reversed situation. The re-lationships are explained using a simple tropical air-sea coupled model (Gill model), which includes apositive/negative feedback scenario that seems to hold during the ENSO cycle.
