Abstract:Bacillus smithii is a thermophilic Bacillus that can be isolated from white wine, hot spring soil, high-temperature compost, and coffee grounds, with various biofunctions and wide applications. It is resistant to both gastric acid and high temperature, which makes it easier to perform probiotic effects than traditional commercial probiotics, so it can maintain good vitality during food processing and has great application prospects. This paper starts with the taxonomy and genetics and focuses on aspects, including genetic transformation, functional enzyme production, waste utilization, and application in the field of food science as a potential probiotic. According to available studies during the past 30 years, we considered that B. smithii is a novel class of microorganisms with a wide range of functional enzymes such as hydrolytic enzymes and hydrolases, as well as resistance to pathogenic bacteria. It is available in waste degradation, organic fertilizer production, the feed and chemical industries, the pharmaceutical sector, and food fortification. Moreover, B. smithii has great potentials for applications in the food industry, as it presents high resistance to the technological processes that guarantee its health benefits. It is also necessary to systematically evaluate the safety, flavor, and texture of B. smithii and explore its biological mechanism of action, which is of great value for further application in multiple fields, especially in food and medicine.

Abstract:Spore-forming Bacillus coagulans has been widely recognized as an important probiotic, which is commonly used in products for human consumption and animal feeds. B . coagulans exhibits beneficial traits from both Bacillus and lactic acid-producing Lactobacillus . The present study evaluated the safety of the newly isolated B. coagulans strain JBI-YZ6.3, using combined genomic and phenotypic analysis approaches. The taxonomic classification based on genome sequence and biochemical tests identified strain JBI-YZ6.3 as B. coagulans . Comprehensive genome-based analyses established JBI-YZ6.3 as a novel strain of B. coagulans . Antibiotic susceptibility testing showed that the strain JBI-YZ6.3 was sensitive to a panel of fourteen antibiotics, and no genes related to antibiotic resistance were found in its genome. The spores of strain JBI-YZ6.3 exhibited tolerance to acid and bile salts, as well as stability at ambient and elevated conditions of temperature and relative humidity. There were no homologs of Bacillus toxin genes identified in the genome of JBI-YZ6.3, and the strain exhibited no cytotoxicity towards Vero cells and human peripheral blood mononuclear cells. In conclusion, findings from this study support the safety of B. coagulans strain JBI-YZ6.3, which can be developed into new probiotic products for preventive and therapeutic benefits in human and animal hosts.

Molecular identification and safety assessment of the potential probiotic strain Bacillus paralicheniformis HMPM220325 isolated from artisanal fruit dairy products

Abstract:Bacillus probiotics exhibit considerable economic potential owing to their heightened resilience to external stressors and relatively lower costs related to production and preservation. Although Bacillus paralicheniformis has been acknowledged as a plant-promoting bacterium for a long time, understanding its potential as a probiotic is still in its nascent stages. In this study, the safety and probiotic characteristics of a strain of HMPM220325, isolated from artisanal fruit dairy products, were examined through whole-genome sequencing and phenotypic analysis. The whole genome of HMPM220325 was analyzed for antimicrobial resistance genes, pathogenicity factors, and genes associated with probiotic traits including stress resistance, spore formation, gut adhesion, competitive exclusion of pathogens, bacteriocin expression, and carbohydrate metabolism related to prebiotic utilization. Also, wet lab experiments were conducted for the characterization of probiotics. The identification of the organism as B. paralicheniformis was verified. Its safety was assessed through in silico analysis, the haemolytic activity test, and the acute oral toxicity test. B. paralicheniformis HMPM220325 demonstrated its ability to survive in the pH range of 4-10 and bile salt concentrations of 0-0.9% (w/v), tolerate temperatures between 20 and 60 °C, and exhibit a robust antioxidant capacity. Moreover, B. paralicheniformis HMPM220325 demonstrated a moderate level of hydrophobicity, had the ability to form biofilms, achieved a self-aggregation rate of 51.77 ± 1.01% within 6 hours, and successfully colonized the mouse intestine for a duration of up to 17 days. Additionally, the genome of B. paralicheniformis HMPM220325 contains three gene clusters associated with the biosynthesis of bacteriocins and exhibits co-aggregation with Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The findings of the genomic analysis align with those obtained from the experimental investigation, thereby substantiating the potential of B. paralicheniformis HMPM220325 as a probiotic suitable for incorporation in dairy functional foods and feed applications.
Assessing the Safety and Probiotic Characteristics of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus X253 via Complete Genome and Phenotype Analysis

Abstract:Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus is a generalist that can adapt to different ecological niches, serving as a valuable source of probiotics. The genome of L. rhamnosus X253 contains one chromosome and no plasmids, with a size of 2.99 Mb. Both single-copy orthologous gene-based phylogenetic analysis and average nucleotide identity indicated that dairy-derived L. rhamnosus X253 was most closely related to the human-intestine-derived strain L. rhamnosus LOCK908, rather than other dairy strains. The adaptation of L. rhamnosus X253 and the human-intestine-derived strain L. rhamnosus GG to different ecological niches was explained by structural variation analysis and COG annotation. Hemolytic assays, API ZYM assays, and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed to validate risk-related sequences such as virulence factors, toxin-encoding genes, and antibiotic-resistance genes in the genomes of L. rhamnosus X253 and GG. The results showed that L. rhamnosus GG was able to use L-fucose, had a higher tolerance to bile salt, and adhered better to CaCo-2 cells. In contrast, L. rhamnosus X253 was capable of utilizing D-lactose, withstood larger quantities of hydrogen peroxide, and possessed excellent antioxidant properties. This study confirmed the safety and probiotic properties of L. rhamnosus X253 via complete genome and phenotype analysis, suggesting its potential as a probiotic.

Abstract:Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (Lb. bulgaricus) is an important species of Lactic Acid Bacteria (LAB) used for cheese and yogurt fermentation. The genome of Lb. bulgaricus 2038, an industrial strain mainly used for yogurt production, was completely sequenced and compared against the other two ATCC collection strains of the same subspecies. Specific physiological properties of strain 2038, such as lysine biosynthesis, formate production, aspartate-related carbon-skeleton intermediate metabolism, unique EPS synthesis and efficient DNA restriction/modification systems, are all different from those of the collection strains that might benefit the industrial production of yogurt. Other common features shared by Lb. bulgaricus strains, such as efficient protocooperation with Streptococcus thermophilus and lactate production as well as well-equipped stress tolerance mechanisms may account for it being selected originally for yogurt fermentation industry. Multiple lines of evidence suggested that Lb. bulgaricus 2038 was genetically closer to the common ancestor of the subspecies than the other two sequenced collection strains, probably due to a strict industrial maintenance process for strain 2038 that might have halted its genome decay and sustained a gene network suitable for large scale yogurt production.
Safety and robustness aspects analysis of Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus LDB-C1 based on the genome analysis and biological tests

Abstract:Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus (L. bulgaricus) is a microaerophylic anaerobe, which is widely used in the production of yogurt, cheese, and other fermented dairy products. L. bulgaricus and its partner Streptococcus thermophilus were used as starter cultures of yogurt in the world for thousands of years. In our previous study, L. bulgaricus LDB-C1 was obtained from traditional fermented milk, and possessed some characteristics like high exopolysaccharide yield and good fermentation performance. The analysis of its CRISPR-Cas system, antibiotic resistance, virulence factors, and mobile elements, was performed to reveal the stability of the strain LDB-C1. It was found that LDB-C1 contains a plenty of spacers in the CRISPR region, indicating it might have better performance against the infection of phages and plasmids. Furthermore, the acquired or transmittable antibiotic resistance/virulence factor genes were absent in the tested L. bulgaricus strain LDB-C1.

Abstract:Probiotics are health-beneficial microorganisms with mainly immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. Lactobacillus delbrueckii species is a common bacteria used in the dairy industry, and their benefits to hosting health have been reported. This study analyzed the core genome of nine strains of L. delbrueckii species with documented probiotic properties, focusing on genes related to their host health benefits. For this, a combined methodology including several software and databases (BPGA, SPAAN, BAGEL4, BioCyc, KEEG, and InterSPPI) was used to predict the most important characteristics related to L. delbrueckii strains probiose. Comparative genomics analyses revealed that L. delbrueckii probiotic strains shared essential genes related to acid and bile stress response and antimicrobial activity. Other standard features shared by these strains are surface layer proteins and extracellular proteins-encoding genes, with high adhesion profiles that interacted with human proteins of the inflammatory signaling pathways (TLR2/4-MAPK, TLR2/4-NF-κB, and NOD-like receptors). Among these, the PrtB serine protease appears to be a strong candidate responsible for the anti-inflammatory properties reported for these strains. Furthermore, genes with high proteolytic and metabolic activity able to produce beneficial metabolites, such as acetate, bioactive peptides, and B-complex vitamins were also identified. These findings suggest that these proteins can be essential in biological mechanisms related to probiotics' beneficial effects of these strains in the host.

Abstract:Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus is one of the most commonly used starter cultures for yogurt production. However, how its genetic background affects acid production capacity is unclear. This study investigated the industrial potential of L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus using population genomics and GWAS analysis. To meet our goal, population genetics and functional genomics analyses were performed on 188 newly sequenced L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus strains isolated from naturally fermented dairy products together with 19 genome sequences retrieved from the NCBI database. Four distinct clusters were identified, and they were correlated with the geographical sites where the samples were collected. The GWAS analysis about acidification fermentation results with sucrose-fortified reconstituted skim milk revealed a significant association between l-lactate dehydrogenase (lldD; Ldb2036) and the bacterial acid production rate. Our study has broadened the understanding of the population structure and genetic diversity of L. delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus by identifying potential targets for further research, development, and use of lactic acid bacteria in the dairy industry.

Abstract:The article provides an overview of the genomic features of Lactobacillus fermentum strain 3872. The genomic sequence reported here is one of three L. fermentum genome sequences completed to date. Comparative genomic analysis allowed the identification of genes that may be contributing to enhanced probiotic properties of this strain. In particular, the genes encoding putative mucus binding proteins, collagen-binding proteins, class III bacteriocin, as well as exopolysaccharide and prophage-related genes were identified. Genes related to bacterial aggregation and survival under harsh conditions in the gastrointestinal tract, along with the genes required for vitamin production were also found.

Abstract:Probiotics are defined as live organisms in the host that contribute to health benefits. Lactobacillus gasseri LM1065, isolated from human breast milk, was investigated for its probiotic properties based on its genome. Draft genome map and de novo assembly were performed using the PacBio RS II system and hierarchical genome assembly process (HGAP). Probiotic properties were determined by the resistance to gastric conditions, adherence ability, enzyme production, safety assessment and mobile genetic elements. The fungistatic effect and inhibition of hyphae transition were studied using the cell-free supernatant (CFS). L. gasseri LM1065 showed high gastric pepsin tolerance and mild tolerance to bile salts. Auto-aggregation and hydrophobicity were measured to be 61.21% and 61.55%, respectively. The adherence to the human intestinal epithelial cells was measured to be 2.02%. Antibiotic-resistance genes and putative virulence genes were not predicted in the genomic analysis, and antibiotic susceptibility was satisfied by the criteria of the European Food Safety Authority. CFS showed a fungistatic effect and suppressed the tricarboxylic acid cycle in Candida albicans (29.02%). CFS also inhibited the transition to true hyphae and damaged the blastoconidia. This study demonstrates the essential properties of this novel probiotic, L. gasseri LM1065, and potential to inhibit vaginal C. albicans infection.

Abstract:Numerous different species of LAB are used in different fields due to their unique characteristics. However, Lacticaseibacillus chiayiensis , a newly established species in 2018, has limited microorganism resources, and lacks comprehensive evaluations of its properties. In this study, L. chiayiensis AACE3, isolated from fermented blueberry, was evaluated by genomic analysis and in vitro assays of the properties. The genome identified genes associated with biofilm formation ( luxS , ccpA , brpA ), resistance to oxidative stress ( tpx , trxA , trxB , hslO ), tolerance to acidic conditions ( dltA , dltC ), resistance to unfavorable osmotic pressure ( opuBB , gbuA , gbuB , gbuC ), and adhesion ( luxS , dltA , dltC ). The AACE3 showed 112 unique genes, relative to the other three L. chiayiensis strains. Among them, the presence of genes such as clpP , pepO , and feoA suggests a possible advantage of AACE3 over other L. chiayiensis in terms of environmental adaptation. In vitro evaluation of the properties revealed that AACE3 had robust antibacterial activity against eight common pathogens: Streptococcus agalactiae , Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , Salmonella enteritidis , Salmonella choleraesuis , Shigella flexneri , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Klebsiella pneumoniae . In addition, AACE3 showed more than 80% survival rate in all tests simulating gastrointestinal fluid, and it exhibited high antioxidant capacity. Interestingly, the cell culture supernatant was superior to intact organisms and ultrasonically crushed bacterial extracts in all tests of antioxidant capacity. These results suggested that the antioxidant capacity may originate from certain metabolites and extracellular enzymes produced by AACE3. Moreover, AACE3 was a moderate biofilm producer due to the self-agglomeration effect. Taken together, L. chiayiensis AACE3 appears to be a candidate strain for combating the growing incidence of pathogen infections and antioxidant production.

Abstract:Lactobacillus acidophilus is a common kind of lactic acid bacteria usually found in the human gastrointestinal tract, oral cavity, vagina, and various fermented foods. At present, many studies have focused on the probiotic function and industrial application of L. acidophilus. Additionally, dozens of L. acidophilus strains have been genome sequenced, but there has been no research to compare them at the genomic level. In this study, 46 strains of L. acidophilus were performed comparative analyses to explore their genetic diversity. The results showed that all the L. acidophilus strains were divided into two clusters based on ANI values, phylogenetic analysis and whole genome comparison, due to the difference of their predicted gene composition of bacteriocin operon, CRISPR-Cas systems and prophages mainly. Additionally, L. acidophilus was a pan-genome open species with a difference in carbohydrates utilization, antibiotic resistance, EPS operon, surface layer protein operon and other functional gene composition. This work provides a better understanding of L. acidophilus from a genetic perspective, and offers a frame for the biotechnological potentiality of this species.

Abstract:Lactiplantibacillus plantarum SPS109, an isolated strain of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from fermented foods, showed remarkable potential as a probiotic with dual capabilities in γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) production and cholesterol reduction. This study employs genomic and comparative analyses to search into the strain's genetic profile, safety features, and probiotic attributes. The safety assessment reveals the absence of virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance genes, while the genome uncovers bacteriocin-related elements, including sactipeptides and a cluster for putative plantaricins, strengthening its ability to combat diverse pathogens. Pangenome analysis revealed unique bacteriocin-related genes, specifically lcnD and bcrA, distinguishing SPS109 from four other L. plantarum strains producing GABA. In addition, genomic study emphasizes SPS109 strain distinctive features, two GABA-related genes responsible for GABA production and a bile tolerance gene (cbh) crucial for cholesterol reduction. Additionally, the analysis highlights several genes of potential probiotic properties, including stress tolerance, vitamin production, and antioxidant activity. In summary, L. plantarum SPS109 emerges as a promising probiotic candidate with versatile applications in the food and beverage industries, supported by its unique genomic features and safety profile.
In Vitro Probiotic Characteristics and Whole Genome Sequence Analysis of Lactobacillus Strains Isolated from Cattle-Yak Milk

Abstract:Cattle-yak milk is an important raw material and an indispensable source of high-quality food for local farmers and herdsmen to produce ghee, milk residue, yogurt, and other dairy products. In this study, Lactobacillus strains were isolated from cattle-yak milk for potential probiotic candidates using a series of in vitro tests, including probiotic characterization and safety evaluation (antibiotic susceptibility and hemolytic ability). The results found that the Lactobacillus rhamnosus CY12 strain showed a high survival rate in bile salts, under acid conditions, and in the gastrointestinal juice environment, as well as showing high antimicrobial activity and adhesive potential. The safety evaluation showed that all strains were considered non-hemolytic. In addition, the whole-genome sequencing indicated that the strain CY12 spanned 2,506,167 bp, with an average length of 881 bp; the GC content in the gene region (%) was 47.35, contained 1347 protein-coding sequences, and accounted for 85.72% of the genome. The genome annotation showed that genes mainly focused on the immune system process, metabolic process, carbohydrate utilization, carbon metabolism, galactose metabolism, and biological adhesion, etc. This study revealed that the Lactobacillus rhamnosus CY12 strain might be an excellent potential probiotic in the development of feed additives for animals and has the ability to promote health.

Abstract:Bacillus coagulans is a probiotic agent widely used in various industries. In this study, we isolated a novel strain of B. coagulans, X26, from soil and characterized its properties. X26 exhibited superior enzyme, acid, and biomass yields when compared with other bacterial probiotics and an antibiotic. Moreover, X26 significantly improved the body weight of rats, highlighting its potential for industrial development as a supplement for animals. To optimize the fermentation process of this bacterium, we adopted the response surface design. When X26 was cultured in a medium with 16.5 g/L maltose, 25.00 g/L yeast extract, and 3.5 g/L K2HPO4, the optimal yield was predicted to be 5.1 × 109 CFU/mL. Consistent with the prediction, the yield of X26 in a 500-mL flask culture was (5.12 ± 0.01) × 109 CFU/mL, and in a 30-L fermenter was (5.11 ± 0.02) × 109 CFU/mL, accounting for a 9.9-fold higher field than that with a basal medium before optimization. We further optimized the fermentation process in the 30-L and a 10-T fermenter, generating yields of (7.8 ± 0.2) × 109 CFU/mL (spore rate: 96.54%) and (8.7 ± 0.1) × 109 CFU/mL (spore rate: 97.93%), respectively. These yields and spore rates were achieved at 45-55°C, the typical fermentation temperature of B. coagulans. Our findings indicate that B. coagulans X26 is a promising probiotic with considerable potential for cost-effective industrial fermentation.

Abstract:This study aims to identify lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolates possessing physiological characteristics suitable for use as probiotics in yogurt fermentation. Following acid and bile salt tolerance tests, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (NUC08 and NUC101), Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (NUC55 and NUC201), and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei (NUC159, NUC216, and NUC351) were shortlisted based on intraspecies distribution for further evaluation. Their physiological probiotic properties, including transit tolerance, adhesion, autoaggregation, surface hydrophobicity, biofilm formation, and antibacterial activity, were assessed. Principal component analysis indicated that Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NUC08 was the preferred choice among the evaluated strains. Subsequent investigations revealed that co-culturing Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NUC08 with 2 yogurt starter strains resulted in a cooperative and synergistic effect, enhancing the growth of mixed strains and increasing their tolerance to simulated gastric and intestinal conditions. Additionally, when Vibrio harveyi bioluminescent reporter strain was used, the 3 cocultured strains cooperated to induce the activity of a quorum sensing (QS) molecule autoinducer-2 (AI-2), hinting a potential connection between phenotypic traits and QS in the cocultured strains. Importantly, LAB viable counts were significantly higher in yogurt co-fermented with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NUC08, consistently throughout the storage period. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that the probiotic strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NUC08 can be employed in synergy with yogurt starter strains, affirming its potential for use in the development of functional fermented dairy products.
Antibiotic resistance characterization, virulence factors and molecular characteristics of Bacillus species isolated from probiotic preparations in China

Abstract:Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the phenotypic and molecular characteristics of antibiotic-resistant Bacillus spp. isolated from probiotic preparations in China. Methods: Bacillus strains were isolated from probiotic preparations and then identified using 16S rDNA sequencing. Drug sensitivity tests were conducted to determine their susceptibility to seven antibiotics. Whole genome sequencing was performed on the most resistant strains, followed by analysis of their molecular characteristics, resistance genes, and virulence factors. Results: In total, we isolated 21 suspected Bacillus species from seven compound probiotics, which were identified by 16S rDNA as 12 Bacillus licheniformis, six Bacillus subtilis and three Bacillus cereus. The determination of antimicrobial susceptibility showed widespread resistance to chloramphenicol (95.2%), erythromycin (85.7%) and gentamicin (42.9%). Whole genome sequencing of seven resistant strains revealed that J-6-A (Bacillus subtilis) and J-7-A (Bacillus cereus) contained a plasmid. The resistance gene analysis revealed that each strain contained more than ten resistance genes, among which J-7-A was the most. The streptomycin resistance gene strA was detected in all strains. The chloramphenicol resistance genes ykkC and ykkD were found in J-1-A to J-5-A and were first reported in Bacillus subtilis. The erythrocin resistance gene ermD was detected in strains J-1-A to J-4-A. There were also more than 15 virulence factors and gene islands (GIs) involved in each strain. Conclusions: These results confirm the potential safety risks of probiotics and remind us to carefully select probiotic preparations containing strains of Bacillus species, especially Bacillus cereus, to avoid the potential spread of resistance and pathogenicity.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to assess in vitro probiotic potential of Lactobacillus strains derived from artisanal fermented vegetables in Shaanxi, China. In total, 74 acid-producing Gram-positive strains with rod-shaped under the microscope were isolated from 16 samples of spontaneously fermented vegetables. Out of 74 strains, 26 showed high survival rate under low pH and high bile salts conditions and were subjected to molecular identification by 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis. The results showed that 15 isolates belonged to Lactobacillus plantarum , 9 isolates belonged to Lactobacillus brevis , and the 2 remaining strains belonged to Weissella viridescens . The 24 Lactobacillus strains were investigated for their survival rate to transit simulated gastrointestinal tract, cell surface hydrophobicity, auto-aggregation, co-aggregation with pathogen, adhesion to Caco-2, antimicrobial activity, antibiotics susceptibility, radical scavenging ability, α-glucosidase inhibition, and the cholesterol assimilation. The results showed that the probiotic characteristics were strain-dependent, and several strains exhibited great probiotic potential with specific health benefits, which indicated that they might be excellent candidates for production of functional foods. Interestingly, it was first found that L. plantarum generally had higher antibacterial activities, α-glucosidase inhibition ability, and antibiotics susceptibility compared to L. brevis in this study. The results indicated that Lactobacillus strains isolated from fermented vegetables in Shaanxi, China, could be exploited as a promising novel probiotic source.

Abstract:Lymph node invasion with presence of conidia, their replicates, germ tubes, condidia with hair-like projections and hyphae have been observed in a case of entomophthoromycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus. This rare occurrence of conidia with hair-like projections that is usually observed in vitro, has been observed in vivo, in the content of an abscess produced by this agent, C. coronatus in the present case. Severe disfigurement and destruction of facial and nasopharyngeal tissues, have also been observed in this case. Response to therapy with oral KI, surgery, combinations of trimethoprim and sulphamethoxazole and steroids though found useful initially, was ineffective subsequently as the disease progressed over 7 years. Findings of lymphatic invasion and the extensive destruction observed in the present case warrants a guarded prognosis. Free conidial reproduction found in lymph nodes may suggest the possibility of this disease being infectious, requiring an active and vigorous treatment schedule and control measures in this infection.

Abstract:Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are believed to have health-promoting properties to the host and can be used in therapeutics interventions; intriguingly, they have the property to produce bio-preservatives substances. Therefore, this study aimed to mine probiotics and evaluate their safety, functional properties, and cholesterol-lowering capability. Seven potential probiotic strains were compared from 56 LAB strains isolated from traditional Chinese fermented milk. The results showed that all tested strains are tolerant to gastric acidity (45.5-83.26) and bile salts (11.92-92.91%) and have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC25922. Likewise, it lowered the cholesterol levels in vitro by live cells (26.57-45.76%) and dead cells (29.53-50.97%) with remarkable aggregation ability (13.8-43.71%). Antioxidant properties and produce short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were strain-dependent features. Upon assessment of the safety, Enterococcus faecium NWAFU-BIO-AS14 exhibited virulence factors genes (VFs) of (mur-2ed, odc, and tet(K)) and + hemolysis activity. While Enterococcus faecium NWAFU-BIO-A-B24 and Limosilactobacillus fermentum NWAFU-BIO-B-S6 have VFs of (odc, vanC2, and ant(6)-Ia). Limosilactobacillus fermentum NWAFU-BIO-D-B2 has only (odc). Thus, they are not considered as safe probiotics. In contrast, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum NWAFU-BIO-BS29, Companilactobacillus crustorum NWAFU-BIO-AS16, and Lactobacillus gallinarum NWAFU-BIO-D-S7 are the safest and best strains, respectively, due to the absence of 16 VFs and their sensitivity to antibiotics such as kanamycin, erythromycin, tetracycline, gentamycin, vancomycin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, and ampicillin. Accordingly, these strains have a high potentiality to be used as starter cultures or safely applied as perfect probiotics in functionals food and feed.
