Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between vertical dimension and bite force as well as electromyography (EMG) in elderly edentulous people,and to provide references for determining normal vertical dimension in clinic. Methods 10 edentulous subjects who went to the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital,College of Medicine,Zhejiang University were chosen. The normal vertical dimension was measured by conventional method. Based on the normal vertical dimension (M position),other 12 vertical dimensions were settled at every 0. 5 mm. Bite force at different vertical dimensions was measured using an occlusometer,while electromyography of bilateral masseter and anterior temporal muscles were recorded by multichannel physiologic collection device. Vertical dimension,bite force and muscle activity were statistically analyzed. Results ①Bite force was positively correlated with vertical dimension (P <0. 05). ②Normalized masseter muscle activity (NMM)and normalized anterior temporal muscles activity (NATM)were negatively correlated with vertical dimension (P < 0. 05). ③Masseter muscle activity/ bite force (MM/ BF)and anterior temporal muscles activi-ty / bite force (ATM/ BF)were negatively correlated with vertical dimension. Conclusions ①Bite force increased with the increase of vertical dimension. The normal vertical dimension wasn′t where bite force is maximal. ②Masseter muscle activity decreased with the in-crease of occlusal vertical dimension,but the change of anterior temporal muscle activity wasn′t so apparent compared to that of masseter muscle activity. ③MM/ BF and ATM/ BF decreased with the increase of occlusal vertical dimension. ④There may be a stable area near-by the normal occlusal vertical dimension. Inside the stable area,changes of bite force,masseter muscle and anterior temporal muscle activity were not significant.
Thickness Change of Masseter Muscles and the Surrounding Soft Tissues in Female Patients During Orthodontic Treatment: a Retrospective Study

Abstract:Background Facial esthetics is a major concern of orthodontic patients. This study aims to evaluate orthodontic treatment-related thickness changes of the masseter muscles and surrounding soft tissues and the potential factors that would influence these changes during orthodontic treatment in female adults. Methods Forty-two female adult patients were included in this retrospective study and were divided into extraction ( n = 22) and nonextraction ( n = 20) groups. Pretreatment and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were superimposed and reconstructed. The thickness changes of the masseter area of facial soft tissue (MAS), masseter muscles (MM) and surrounding fat tissue (FT) were measured. Pretreatment age, treatment duration, sagittal relationship (ANB), and vertical relationship (Frankfort-mandibular plane angle, FMA)-related MAS, MM and FT changes were compared between extraction and nonextraction groups. Spearman’s correlation coefficient was calculated between the above variables. Regression analysis was conducted to confirm the causal relations of the variables. Results The thickness of MAS and MM significantly decreased in both groups, with larger decreases (> 1 mm) in the extraction group. There were strong correlations ( r > 0.7) between the thickness decrease in MAS and MM in both groups and moderate correlations ( r > 0.4) between MAS and FT in the nonextraction group. A significantly greater decrease of MAS and MM were found to be moderately correlated with a smaller FMA ( r > 0.4) in the extraction group. Scatter plots and regression analysis confirmed these correlations. Conclusions Masseter muscles and the surrounding soft tissue exhibited a significant decrease in thickness during orthodontic treatment in female adults. Low-angle patients experienced a greater decrease in soft tissue thickness in the masseter area in the extraction case. But the thickness changes were clinically very small in most patients.

Population Analysis of Masseter Muscle Tension Using Shear Wave Ultrasonography across Different Disease States

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the distribution and trends of masseter muscle tension in patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, examining gender-specific differences and the impact of various TMJ disorders. Methods: From January 2020 to June 2024, a total of 734 patients presenting with facial pain radiating to the head and neck, localized around and extending from the TMJ, were referred for ultrasonographic examination. After applying exclusion criteria, 535 patients (72.9%) were included in the study. The patient cohort consisted of 343 females (64.1%) and 192 males (35.9%), with muscle tension measured using the Aixplorer ultrasound system equipped with a shear wave device. Data were collected and analyzed across different age groups and TMJ conditions, including "no changes", "exudate", "arthrosis", and "disc displacement". Results: The study found that males exhibited higher muscle tension across all conditions, particularly in the "no changes" (40.4 kPa vs. 32.1 kPa, 25.9% higher) and "exudate" (38.5 kPa vs. 29.7 kPa, 29.6% higher) categories, indicating increased muscle strain and inflammation during middle age. In females, a trend of decreasing muscle tension with age was observed, with a significant reduction from 36.2 kPa in the 20-30 age group to 24.3 kPa in the 60-70 age group (32.9% reduction), suggesting a reduction in muscle mass or strength due to aging. Both genders showed high muscle tension in the presence of exudate, with females peaking in the 40-50 age group at 37.1 kPa and males peaking earlier in the 20-30 age group at 41.2 kPa (10.9% higher in males), highlighting potential gender differences in inflammatory response. In the arthrosis group, males displayed a consistent increase in muscle tension with age, peaking at 37.5 kPa in the 50-60 age group (50.7% increase from the 20-30 age group), while females showed high tension, particularly in the 40-50 age group at 31.0 kPa (82.4% higher compared to the 20-30 age group), indicating the need for targeted joint health interventions in middle-aged women. Conclusions: This study reveals significant gender-specific differences in masseter muscle tension among patients with TMJ pain. Males were found to be more affected by muscle strain and inflammation during middle age, whereas females showed a significant decrease in muscle tension with age. The presence of exudate significantly impacted muscle tension across all age groups for both genders. These findings underscore the importance of tailored clinical interventions and preventive strategies to manage TMJ disorders effectively.

Abstract:To compare masticatory muscle thickness in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) during rest and clenching, and by body position, using ultrasonography. This prospective study included 96 patients with TMD (67 females, 29 males; mean age: 40.41 ± 17.88 years): group 1, comprising 66 patients with TMD without bruxism (TMD_nonbruxer), and group 2, comprising 30 patients with concurrent TMD and bruxism (TMD_bruxer). In patients with TMD, bruxism was correlated with the presence of tinnitus, muscle stiffness, sleep problems, psychological stress, and restricted mouth opening. The masseter muscle significantly thickened during clenching (11.16 ± 3.03 mm vs 14.04 ± 3.47 mm, p < 0.001), whereas the temporalis muscle showed no significant increase in thickness from resting to clenching in an upright position (7.91 ± 1.98 vs 8.39 ± 2.08, p = 0.103). Similarly, during clenching in the supine position, the masseter muscle was significantly thicker compared with rest (11.24 ± 2.42 vs 13.49 ± 3.09, p < 0.001), but no significant difference was observed in temporal muscle thickness (8.21 ± 2.16 vs 8.43 ± 1.94, p = 0.464). In comparison between two groups, the average thickness of the masseter muscle was greater among TMD_bruxers than among TMD_nonbruxers in both the upright and supine positions (all p < 0.05). In the generalized lineal model, female sex (B = − 1.018, 95% confidence interval [CI] − 1.855 to − 0.181, p = 0.017) and bruxism (B = 0.868, 95% CI 0.567 to 1.169, p = 0.048) significantly predicted changes in masseter muscle thickness. Female sex (B = − 0.201, 95% CI − 0.299 to − 0.103, p = 0.011), increased age (B = − 0.003, 95% CI − 0.005 to 0.000, p = 0.038), and muscle stiffness (B = − 1.373, 95% CI − 2.369 to − 0.376, p = 0.007) were linked to decreased temporal muscle thickness. Comparing TMD nonbruxer and bruxer muscle thicknesses in upright and supine positions revealed significant increased thickness in the masseter muscle during clenching but not in the temporalis muscle. Masseter muscle thickness varied significantly by sex, body position, and resting/clenching, notably influenced by bruxism. These findings emphasize the relevance of these factors in clinical examinations of patients with TMD.

Abstract:The main objective of the study was to determine the thickness and internal structure of the masseter muscle and anterior temporal muscle in patients with bruxism by ultrasonography, and as a result of the study, it was detected that muscle thickness increased in patients with bruxism and the most common internal structure was Type 2. Objective The current study is a comparative cross‐sectional analysis study to determine the thickness and internal structure of the masseter muscle (MM) and anterior temporal muscle (ATM) in patients with bruxism by ultrasonography (USG). Materials and Methods A total of 100 patients (36 males, 64 females), 50 with bruxism and 50 without bruxism, aged 20–30 years were included in the study. All patients were investigated with MM and ATM USG. The thickness of the muscles was measured at rest and during clenching and the internal structure at rest was classified as Type I, II, and III. Differences in the internal structure between bruxism and non‐bruxism groups were determined using the Chi‐square test (p 0.05). Bruxism patients had higher rest and clench thicknesses than non‐bruxism patients on both sides in MM and ATM, however, this did not result in a statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). Conclusions The results obtained showed that the evaluation of internal structure and thickness differences via USG is crucial in understanding the nature of the bruxism process affecting the masseter and ATM, facilitating its clinical diagnosis and leading to its treatment.

Abstract:This study used ultrasonography to compare the thickness and cross-sectional area of the masticatory muscles in patients with temporomandibular joint arthralgia and investigated the differences according to sex and the co-occurrence of headache attributed to temporomandibular disorders (HATMD). The observational study comprised 100 consecutive patients with TMJ arthralgia (71 females and 29 males; mean age, 40.01 ± 17.67 years) divided into two groups: Group 1, including 86 patients with arthralgia alone (60 females; 41.15 ± 17.65 years); and Group 2, including 14 patients with concurrent arthralgia and HATMD (11 females; 33.00 ± 16.72 years). The diagnosis of TMJ arthralgia was based on the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders. The parameters of the masticatory muscles examined by ultrasonography were subjected to statistical analysis. The pain area (2.23 ± 1.75 vs. 5.79 ± 2.39, p -value = 0.002) and visual analog scale (VAS) score (3.41 ± 1.82 vs. 5.57 ± 12.14, p -value = 0.002) were significantly higher in Group 2 than in Group 1. Muscle thickness (12.58 ± 4.24 mm) and cross-sectional area (4.46 ± 2.57 cm 2 ) were larger in the masseter muscle than in the other three masticatory muscles ( p -value < 0.001). When examining sex-based differences, the thickness and area of the masseter and lower temporalis muscles were significantly larger in males (all p -value < 0.05). The area of the masseter muscle (4.67 ± 2.69 vs. 3.18 ± 0.92, p -value = 0.004) and lower temporalis muscle (3.76 ± 0.95 vs. 3.21 ± 1.02, p -value = 0.049) was significantly smaller in Group 2 than in Group 1. An increase in VAS was significantly negatively correlated with the thickness of the masseter (r = − 0.268) and lower temporalis (r = − 0.215), and the cross-sectional area of the masseter (r = − 0.329) and lower temporalis (r = − 0.293). The masseter and lower temporalis muscles were significantly thinner in females than in males, and their volumes were smaller in patients with TMJ arthralgia and HATMD than in those with TMJ arthralgia alone. HATMD and decreased masseter and lower temporalis muscle volume were associated with increased pain intensity.

Perioral soft tissue evaluation of skeletal Class II Division 1: A lateral cephalometric study

Abstract:Introduction: To obtain the balance and harmony of the soft tissue facial profile in orthodontic treatment, it is necessary to identify the characteristics of overlying soft tissues according to the horizontal and vertical skeletal patterns. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perioral soft tissue characteristics of skeletal Class II Division 1 subjects (group II) with various vertical patterns compared with skeletal Class I subjects (group I). Methods: Lateral cephalograms of 99 Korean adults (44 women, 45 men; mean age, 23.4 years) were divided into 4 groups based on horizontal and vertical skeletal pattern (SN-MP angle): group I, 22 subjects; group II-low angle (<27°), 14 subjects; group II-normal angle (27°-36°), 33 subjects; and group II-high angle (>37°), 30 subjects. The correlations and multiple linear regression tests were used to determine the skeletal and dental variables influencing soft tissue characteristics. Results: Group II-high angle showed significantly greater values than did group II-low angle for basic lower lip thickness and lower lip length. The perioral soft tissue measurements of group II were correlated with the inclination and anteroposterior position of the maxillary and mandibular incisors along with facial depth (N-Go) and facial length (S-Gn). Upper lip strain of group II was not influenced by any skeletal variables but only by the inclination and anteroposterior position of the maxillary incisors. Conclusions: Clinicians need to evaluate lip strain and lip thickness based on the skeletal pattern as well as dental inclination to obtain balance in the perioral muscle activity.
Assessment of Reliability, Agreement, and Accuracy of Masseter Muscle Ultrasound Thickness Measurement Using a New Standardized Protocol

Abstract:There is no validated method of assessing masseter muscle thickness (MMT) by ultrasound imaging (US). However, this is important to ensure study and measurement quality of MMT by US in future studies, as MMT differs depending on the examined area. Thus, this study's aim was to present a new standardized method for assessing the MMT by US and to evaluate the reliability, consistency, and accuracy of its measurements. We also compared the results of MMT measurements obtained by US and computer tomography (CT). The study included nine healthy adults. The US and CT scans were collected in a supine rest position with the mandible in relaxed position. US measurements were determined according to a new standardized protocol (with precise probe location). The MMT measured by CT and US over a seven-day interval showed excellent intra-rater reliability. The mean MMT measured by CT was 12.1 mm (1.74) on the right side and 11.9 mm (1.61) on the left side. The mean MMT measured by US was 12.7 mm (2.00) on the right side and 11.5 mm (1.37) on the left side. The mean percent error in MMT measurement between CT and US was below 6%. A strong linear relationship was found between the CT and US measurements of the MMT on both body sides (p < 0.001, r ≥ 0.93). The proposed method of MMT measurement using US demonstrated excellent reliability, yielding results similar to those obtained from CT images. We recommend the use of this standardization protocol in further studies where precise assessment of MMT by US is expected.

Abstract:Background: Masticatory muscle thickness provides objective measurements of the temporomandibular motor function, which may change in patients with oral myofascial pain. Moreover, they are considered as being part of the craniocervical unit by a crucial relationship with cervical muscles and their fasciae. In this study, we aimed to assess by ultrasound (US) imaging the fasciae of the masseter, temporal, and sternocleidomastoid muscles to understand their mean thickness and eventual variation in relationship with the muscles, sides, and sex. Methods: We studied 16 healthy volunteers without temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Concerning each subject were evaluated the range of motion of the temporomandibular joint and of the neck, the thickness of muscles and their fasciae of both sides, and the delta of muscle thickness. Results: All the motor evaluations of the subjects showed normal ranges. The US results showed that the fasciae have a mean thickness of 0.50 ± 0.1 mm, which did not change during muscle contraction. The evaluated muscles presented a symmetry between right and left (p > 0.05), even if the delta of muscle (US) thickness had a huge range between different subjects, for example in the masseter muscle from 0.7 to 4.2 mm. Conclusions: Ultrasound imaging is a suitable and reliable tool to study the muscles and fasciae of the head and neck region, permitting also the evaluation of the ability of the muscles to contract. Finally, identifying functional asymmetry that could become symptomatic, US imaging could allow an early rehabilitation treatment.
Assessment of hard and soft tissue thickness at mandibular symphysis in skeletal Class III patients with different vertical patterns

Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to assess the bony and soft tissue parameters at mandibular symphysis among skeletal Class III patients with different vertical growth patterns, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods: CBCT images of 60 skeletal Class III non-growing patients were evaluated (mean age 24.9 ± 8.4 years). Study samples were classified into three facial types based on the mandibular plane angle (SN-MP angle): low, normal, and high angle. The bony and soft tissue parameters at the mandibular symphysis were evaluated. Results: Among hard tissue variables, symphysis and pogonion width were significantly narrower in the high-angle group (P < .05). The thickness of the buccal cortex at pogonion was also significantly thinner in subjects with high angles (P < .01). Symphysis height showed an increasing tendency from the low-angle to the high-angle group. However, no significant differences were found in chin width and height according to vertical patterns. Across all soft tissue measurements, the low-angle group exhibited the highest thickness, which gradually decreased in the high-angle group. Statistically significant differences in soft tissue thickness were observed at Menton (Me) and Gnathion (Gn) (P < .05). A significant negative correlation was observed between the SN-MP angle and the thickness of both hard and soft tissues. Conclusions: In skeletal Class III subjects, significant differences existed in both hard and soft tissues at the mandibular symphysis, depending on the vertical patterns. These results provide a comprehensive evaluation of symphyseal area, which can aid clinicians in identifying appropriate treatment approaches, especially for combined orthognathic and orthodontic treatment.
A Modified Protocol to Evaluate Masseter Morphology Based on Automatic Segmentation and Registration

Abstract:The purpose of the current study was to develop a modified protocol of evaluating the masseter morphology based on graph-cut automatic segmentation. The protocol was applied in the study on pre and postoperative masseter variation in patients receiving mandibular angle reduction. Computed tomography (CT) was used for the image data analysis. The masseter boundary was automatically segmentate on slices. The bony structure of mandible was segmented by the threshold restrain and three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed using the matching cubes algorithm. The pre- and postoperative images of the bony and masseter structures are overlapped in on coordinate system via the ICP registration. The masseter variation was reflected by the measures of the total volume and the 3D surface meshes through comparison of pre- vs. post-operative data. The average volume of the masseter was 32270.5±9354.1 mm 3 prior to the surgery, and decreased to 26376.89±7571.4 mm 3 and 26650.7±7179.3 mm 3 at 6 and 24 months after surgery, respectively. The variation on the cross section at 6 months after the surgery was 6.4±1.5 mm on the angular plane, 2.2±0.9 mm on the occlusion plan and 0.1±0.1 mm on the zygomatic plane. At 24 months after the surgery, the variation was 6.0±1.1 mm on the angular plane, 0.9±0.5mm on the occlusion plane and 0 mm on the zygomatic plane. The 3D color map of the meshes showed that the variation occurred mainly at angular and lower ramous area. The modified protocol was feasible for the evaluation of the masseter morphological variation. 3D comparison between the masseter meshes with representative color map is a convenient and time-saving method to evaluate the morphological variation after mandibular angle reduction.
An Ultrasonographic Analysis of the Deep Inferior Tendon in the Masseter Muscle: Implications for Botulinum Toxin Injections

Abstract:(1) Background: With the increasing aesthetic pursuit of facial features, the clinical use of Botulinum Toxin Type A (BoNT-A) injections for masseter hypertrophy has been on the rise. However, due to variations in masseter muscle structure and differences in clinicians' injection techniques, blind injections may lack precision, potentially compromising treatment accuracy and increasing the risk of complications. (2) Objectives: The study aims to use ultrasonography to detail the deep inferior tendon (DIT) within the masseter muscle in a young Chinese cohort, refine its classification, analyze muscle belly thickness and variations across groups, and propose a customized ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injection protocol. (3) Methods: Ultrasound imaging was used to observe the bilateral masseter muscles at rest and during clenching. The features of the DIT were classified from these images, and the thickness of the masseter's distinct bellies associated with the DIT types was measured in both states. (4) Results: The study cohort included 103 participants (27 male, 76 female), with 30 muscles in the normal masseter group and 176 muscles in the hypertrophy group. The DIT was categorized as Type A, B (subtypes B1, B2), and C. The distribution of these types was consistent across normal, hypertrophic, and gender groups, all following the same trend (B > A > C). In hypertrophy, Type B1 showed uniform thickness across masseter bellies, B2 presented with a thinner intermediate belly, and Type C had mainly superficial muscle enlargement. Changes in muscle thickness during clenching were noted but not statistically significant among different bellies. (5) Conclusions: The study evidences individual variation in the DIT, highlighting the importance of precise DIT classification for effective BoNT-A injections. A tailored ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injection strategy based on this classification may enhance safety and efficacy of the therapy.

Abstract:Introduction: This study aimed to (1) examine the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the masseter muscle in relation to bruxism and (2) investigate if there are gender-related differences in the masseter muscle in a population-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study. Methods: The study included 720 subjects aged 30-89 years (391 women and 329 men) from the Study of Health in Pomerania, a cross-sectional population-based study assessing the prevalence and incidence of common population-relevant diseases and their risk factors in Northeastern Germany. The participants underwent both a whole-body MRI and a full oral examination. The CSAs of the masseter muscles on both sides were measured from MRI images. The presence or absence of awake and/or sleep grinding and clenching, unilateral chewing, and other parafunctional activities were obtained from the dental interview. Linear and ordinal logistic regression models were used to examine the associations between the CSAs of the masseter, bruxism, and gender. Results: The frequency of bruxism and reports of muscle or joint pain were significantly higher in women. The analysis revealed that a larger masseter CSA was significantly associated with bruxism only in men. The larger CSA was manifested only in the higher frequency bruxers. Conclusions: Bruxism had heterogeneous effects on the masseter muscle between genders. Although a higher prevalence of bruxism was reported by women, the larger CSA of the masseter muscle was significantly higher in bruxing men but not in women. This study emphasizes the need for a gender-specific approach when evaluating the clinical implications of bruxism on the masseter muscle.

Abstract:The present study evaluated the in vivo musculoaponeurotic architecture of the superficial head (SH) of the masseter muscle (MM) of asymptomatic participants in excursive mandibular movements compared to the relaxed state as examined with ultrasound imaging. It was hypothesized that the mean fiber bundle length (FBL) and mean height of the aponeurosis (HA) of the laminae of the SH would differ significantly between the relaxed state and protrusion, ipsilateral excursion, and contralateral excursion.

Abstract:Introduction: This study evaluated the masseter muscle changes after surgical-orthodontic treatment in patients with a skeletal Class III malocclusion using automatic segmentation. Methods: Images of 120 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion were obtained and reconstructed at T0 (pretreatment), T1 (presurgery), and T2 (6-12-month postsurgery). The patients were divided into symmetrical and asymmetrical groups. The volume, major axis length, maximum cross-sectional area, horizontal cross-sectional area 5 mm above the mandibular foramen (CSAF), and orientation were calculated automatically. Results: In the asymmetrical group, the volume and major axis length on the deviated side were lower than on the nondeviated side at T0, T1, and T2 ( P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in maximum cross-sectional area and CSAF bilaterally. The orientation was coronally more vertical and sagittally more forward on the deviated side (both P < 0.001). In the symmetrical group, there were no significant bilateral differences at T0, T1, and T2. The volume, major axis length, and CSAF decreased, and the coronal orientation was more vertical on the nondeviated side at T2 than at T0 in both groups ( P < 0.05). The coronal plane orientation was more inclined on the deviated side at T2 than at T0 in the asymmetrical group ( P < 0.05). Conclusions: The smaller volume on the deviated side at T2 indicates the need for myofunctional training after surgery. The masseter muscle volume and the cross-sectional area did not recover to the preorthodontic levels. Studies with longer follow-up durations are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract:Background: To investigate the relationship between different skeletal facial types and anterior alveolar bone thickness with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) in an Asian population. Methods: A total of 130 patients with 1,560 healthy anterior teeth were enrolled. On three-dimensional reconstructed images, Frankfurt-mandibular plane angle (FMA) value and angle formed by subspinale, nasion, and supramental (ANB) value were measured, and subjects were categorized into different groups based on their vertical skeletal patterns as well as sagittal jaw relationships. For each tooth, the thickness of alveolar bone was measured at three locations: 1, 3, and 5 mm apical to alveolar bone crest. Descriptive statistics were used. Kruskal-Wallis test, one-way ANOVA, and independent-samples t-test were used for further analysis. Results: Men's maxillary anterior teeth's lingual alveolar bone thickness was significantly greater than women's (P<0.05). Strong correlations were found between vertical skeletal patterns and lingual alveolar bone thickness of maxillary/mandibular anterior teeth (R-2=0.302, P<0.01 in the maxilla; R-2=0.311, P<0.01 in the mandible). However, no significant difference was shown in the alveolar bone thickness among people with different sagittal bone profiles. Conclusions: The lingual alveolar bone of the maxillary anterior teeth is thicker in males than in females. With the increase of FMA, the anterior alveolar bone gradually became thinner.

Abstract:Dental statistics for Koreans are far from complete and the majority of previous researches have adopted techniques such as radiological analysis and sectioning of teeth for morphological information, which are time-consuming, less accurate and destructive. Thus, a new nondestructive method is necessary to get precise dental standardization data for Koreans. For the above purpose, each of the first premolars was scanned by a micro-CT (SkyScan, Belgium) with a resolution of at an interval of 0.022mm along the plane horizontally parallel to an occlusion plane. Internal and external morphological sections were measured and compared to the values in the average tooth size table for permanent teeth presented by G. V Black.
