Abstract:Attributed to the lack of an Earth-like global intrinsic dipole magnetic field on Mars, the induced electromagnetic field environment plays a crucial role in the evolution of its atmosphere. The dominant motional electric field (EM) induced by the bulk motion of the magnetic field within the Martian magnetosheath serves to accelerate ions toward escape velocity, thereby forming a plume escape channel. However, the distribution morphology of EM itself has received limited attention in previous research. In this study, by taking advantage of the multi-fluid Hall-MHD model cooperating with the Martian crustal field model, we focus on elucidating the physical mechanisms underlying the asymmetrical distribution of EM and examining the influence of the crustal field on this asymmetry. The results obtained from the simulation conducted in the absence of the crustal field indicate that the EM is more intense within the −ZMSE magnetosheath, where EM is directed toward Mars, primarily due to its corresponding higher velocity and a stronger magnetic field at lower solar zenith angles. The Martian crustal field has the ability to enhance the local EM around the inner boundary of the magnetosheath by amplifying both the magnetic field and its associated velocity. Accordingly, these findings provide valuable insights into the asymmetric nature of EM within the Martian magnetosheath under typical quiet-time solar wind conditions.

A Novel Ten-Moment Multifluid Model for Mercury: from the Planetary Conducting Core to the Dynamic Magnetosphere

Abstract:For the first time, we explore the tightly coupled interior-magnetosphere system of Mercury by employing a three-dimensional ten-moment multifluid model. This novel fluid model incorporates the non-ideal effects including the Hall effect, inertia, and tensorial pressures that are critical for collisionless magnetic reconnection; therefore, it is particularly well suited for investigating $collisionless$ magnetic reconnection in Mercury's magnetotail and at the planet's magnetopause. The model is able to reproduce the observed magnetic field vectors, field-aligned currents, and cross-tail current sheet asymmetry (beyond the MHD approach) and the simulation results are in good agreement with spacecraft observations. We also study the magnetospheric response of Mercury to a hypothetical extreme event with an enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure, which demonstrates the significance of induction effects resulting from the electromagnetically-coupled interior. More interestingly, plasmoids (or flux ropes) are formed in Mercury's magnetotail during the event, indicating the highly dynamic nature of Mercury's magnetosphere.

Abstract:Abstract Mars lacks a planetary-scale intrinsic magnetosphere, and instead possesses small-scale crustal magnetic fields, creating a distinct class of plasma environments from intrinsic magnetospheres such as that of Earth or Saturn. Here we report the discovery of intrinsic magnetospheric ion behavior at Mars based on the measurements provided by Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission (MAVEN). We observed wedge-like dispersion structures of H + exhibiting butterfly-shaped distributions within the Martian crustal fields, a feature previously observed only in intrinsic magnetospheres. These dispersed structures are a result of drift motions that fundamentally resemble those observed in intrinsic magnetospheres. Our findings indicate that the Martian crustal fields have the potential to behave similarly to intrinsic magnetospheres in modifying the ion motions despite their weak strength and large inhomogeneity. This study offers insights into the role of crustal fields in ion escape and the mass-energy transfer between solar wind and Mars.

Abstract:Both the MARSIS ionospheric sounder and the charged particle instrument package ASPERA-3 are experiments on board the Mars Express spacecraft. Joint observations have shown that events of intense ionospheric electron density enhancements occur in the lower ionosphere of magnetic cusp regions, and that these enhancements are not associated with precipitation of charged particles above a few hundred electron volts (<300eV). To account for the enhancement by particle precipitation, electron fluxes are required with mean energy between 1 and 10keV. No ionizing radiation, neither energetic particles nor X-rays, could be identified, which could produce the observed density enhancement only in the spatially limited cusp regions. Actually, no increase in ionizing radiation, localized or not, was observed during these events. It is argued that the process causing the increase in density is controlled mainly by convection of ionosphere plasma driven by the interaction between the solar wind and crustal magnetic field lines leading to excitation of two-stream plasma waves in the cusp ionosphere. The result is to heat the plasma, reduce the electron–ion recombination coefficient and thereby increase the equilibrium electron density.
A hemispherical dynamo model : Implications for the Martian crustal magnetization

Abstract:Mars Global Surveyor measurements revealed that the Martian crust is strongly magnetized in the southern hemisphere while the northern hemisphere is virtually void of magnetization. Two possible reasons have been suggested for this dichotomy: A once more or less homogeneously magnetization may have been destroyed in the northern hemisphere by, for example, resurfacing or impacts. The alternative theory we further explore here assumes that the dynamo itself produced a hemispherical field. We use numerical dynamo simulations to study under which conditions a spatial variation of the heat flux through the core-mantle boundary (CMB) may yield a strongly hemispherical surface field. We assume that the early Martian dynamo was exclusively driven by secular cooling and we mostly concentrate on a cosine CMB heat flux pattern with a minimum at the north pole, possibly caused by the impacts responsible for the northern lowlands. This pattern consistently triggers a convective mode which is dominated by equatorially anti-symmetric and axisymmetric (EAA) thermal winds. Convective up- and down-wellings and thus radial magnetic field production then tend to concentrate in the southern hemisphere which is still cooled efficiently while the northern hemisphere remains hot. The dynamo changes from an alpha^2- for a homogeneous CMB heat flux to an alpha-Omega-type in the hemispherical configuration. These dynamos reverse on time scales of about 10 kyrs. This too fast to allow for the more or less unidirectional magnetization of thick crustal layer required to explain the strong magnetization in the southern hemisphere.

Abstract:Three-dimensional global hybrid simulations are performed to explore how the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), the Martian crustal fields, and planetary pickup ions affect the twisting of the Martian magnetotail. The results agree with previous studies that the crustal magnetic fields cause the Martian magnetotail to twist counterclockwise or clockwise depending on the sign of the IMF Y-component in the Mars solar orbital coordinates. However, the twist is more pronounced when the crustal fields are on the nightside, contradicting the early explanation that the crustal fields affect the twist through dayside magnetic reconnection between the crustal fields and the draped IMF. Additionally, planetary pickup ions also contribute to the twist because their mass loading slows down the plasma flow and leads to the bending of the magnetic field lines in the magnetotail. It is demonstrated that the twist inside Mars' shadow in the near magnetotail region (at X = −1.5 R M , where R M is Mars' radius) is mainly attributable to the crustal fields, while the influence of planetary pickup ions starts to dominate outside Mars' shadow and in regions further away from Mars.

Abstract:Magnetosonic (MS) waves are dominant plasma waves causing severe Martian ionospheric erosion. They are generally considered to originate upstream of Martian bow shock with frequencies near the upstream proton gyrofrequency. However, whether MS waves can be locally excited lacks theoretical analysis. Here we present an event of MS waves with frequencies above and closely related to the local proton gyrofrequency in the Martian ionosphere. Concurrently, ring beam hot proton distributions are observed due to the penetration of magnetosheath protons. By employing the observed plasma and magnetic field data, the calculated linear growth rates for MS waves agree well with the observed wave power spectra, demonstrating that they can be locally excited by unstable ring beam hot protons at Mars. Our results could be of great help in understanding the excitation of MS waves in a heavy ion‐rich environment around unmagnetized planets.

Global Three‐Dimensional Simulation of Earth's Dayside Reconnection Using a Two‐Way Coupled Magnetohydrodynamics With Embedded Particle‐in‐Cell Model: Initial Results

Abstract:Abstract We perform a three‐dimensional (3‐D) global simulation of Earth's magnetosphere with kinetic reconnection physics to study the flux transfer events (FTEs) and dayside magnetic reconnection with the recently developed magnetohydrodynamics with embedded particle‐in‐cell model. During the 1 h long simulation, the FTEs are generated quasi‐periodically near the subsolar point and move toward the poles. We find that the magnetic field signature of FTEs at their early formation stage is similar to a “crater FTE,” which is characterized by a magnetic field strength dip at the FTE center. After the FTE core field grows to a significant value, it becomes an FTE with typical flux rope structure. When an FTE moves across the cusp, reconnection between the FTE field lines and the cusp field lines can dissipate the FTE. The kinetic features are also captured by our model. A crescent electron phase space distribution is found near the reconnection site. A similar distribution is found for ions at the location where the Larmor electric field appears. The lower hybrid drift instability (LHDI) along the current sheet direction also arises at the interface of magnetosheath and magnetosphere plasma. The LHDI electric field is about 8 mV/m, and its dominant wavelength relative to the electron gyroradius agrees reasonably with Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations.Key Points We performed a 1 h long global simulation of Earth's magnetosphere with kinetic modeling of the dayside reconnection Crater FTE is found at the early stage of a flux rope formation Kinetic phenomena are found from the global simulation

Abstract:As the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) carried by the solar wind encounters the martian atmosphere, it tends to pile up and drape around the planet, forming looping magnetic fields and inducing marsward ion flows on the nightside. Previous statistical observations revealed asymmetrical distribution features within this morphology; however, the underlying physical mechanism remains unclear. In this study, utilizing a three‐dimensional multi‐fluid magnetohydrodynamic simulation model, we successfully reproduce the asymmetrical distributions of the looping magnetic fields and corresponding marsward flows on the martian nightside. Analyzing the magnetic forces resulting from the bending of the IMF over the polar area, we find that the asymmetry is guided by the orientation of the solar wind motional electric field (ESW). A higher solar wind velocity leads to enhanced magnetic forces, resulting in more tightly wrapped magnetic fields with an increased efficiency in accelerating flows as they approach closer to Mars.

Abstract:As incident solar wind encounters the martian upper atmosphere, it undergoes deflection particularly in the magnetosheath. However, the plasma flow exhibits asymmetrical distribution features within this transition region, which is investigated by employing a three‐dimensional Hall magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model from an energy transfer perspective in this study. Simulation results reveal that solar wind protons transfer momentum to ionospheric heavy ions through motional electric field in the hemisphere where the motional electric field points outward from the planet. In the opposite hemisphere, solar wind flow tends to be effectively accelerated by ambipolar and Hall electric fields. The distinct dynamics of solar wind protons in both hemispheres result in the asymmetrical deflection. Furthermore, the extent of asymmetry grows as the cross‐flow component of the upstream interplanetary magnetic field increases, but diminishes as the density of the solar wind proton increases, contingent upon the energy effectively acquired from ambipolar and Hall electric fields.

Abstract:The effect of the Martian crustal magnetic field is one of the hot topics of the study of Martian ionosphere. The studies on this topic are summarized in this paper. Main data of the Martian ionosphere were resulted from radio occultation experiments. According to the observations, the electron density scale height and the peak electron density of the Martian ionosphere are influenced by its crustal magnetic field. The strong horizontal magnetic field prevents the vertical diffusion of the plasma and makes the electron density scale height in the topside ionosphere close to that in the photo equilibrium region. In the cusp-like regions with strong vertical magnetic field, the enhanced vertical diffusion leads to a larger electron density scale height in the diffusion equilibrium region. The observation of radio occultation experiment onboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) showed that the averaged peak electron density observed in the southern hemisphere with strong crustal magnetic field was slightly larger than that in the northern hemisphere with weak crustal magnetic field. The Mars advanced radar for subsurface and ionosphere sounding (MARSIS) onboard Mars Express (MEX) was the first topside sounder to be used to observe Martian ionosphere. The MARSIS results confirmed that the enhancement of the peak electron density occurred in cusp-like regions with open field lines, and the amount of the enhancement was much larger than that observed by the radio occultation experiment. There are two possible mechanisms for the peak electron density enhancement in the cusp-like crustal magnetic field regions: One is the precipitation of the energetic particles and the other is the heating by the waves excited by plasma instabilities. It’s difficult to determine which one is the key mechanism for the peak electron density enhancement. Based on these studies, several interesting problems on the Martian ionosphere and plasma environment are presented.
Numerical Modeling of Global Seismic Wave Propagation in the Whole Mars Models and Effect of Lateral Crustal Variation

Abstract:Investigating the interior structure of Mars is important to study not only its past and present state and future evolution, but also the formation and evolution of the Earth and solar system. Seismological methods played import roles in the study of the Earth and Moon’s interior. The first mission about Martian seismology began in 1976, but no seismic events were convincingly detected during the observation. The InSight Spacecraft landed on Mars on November 26, 2018 in Elysium Planitia and installed the first seismometer on Mars. It will provide the in situ observation of interior structure and seismic activity of Mars for the first time. In this study, we perform numerical modelling of seismic wave propagation in whole-mars models by solving the seismic wave equations using a hybrid pseudospectral and finite difference method on staggered grid. Firstly, based on the Martian internal models derived from geochemical analysis (Sohl and Spohn, 1997), we present numerical simulations of seismic wave propagation in the whole Mars models. The generation and propagation of various seismic phases in the whole Mars models are shown by synthetic seismograms and wavefield snapshots. We analyze the effects of crustal thickness and depth of core mantle boundary on seismic wave propagation. Then based on the present model of Martian crustal thickness (Wieczorek and Zuber, 2004), we simulate seismic wave propagation in laterally heterogeneous Martian crust and analyze the influence of lateral heterogeneity on global seismic wave propagation. Multiple reflections and conversions of seismic waves and their constructive interference occurred inside the low-velocity Martian crust form reverberating wave trains. Thickness of Martian crust has strong effect on the propagation of multiple surface reflections and surface waves. Seismic reflections from core-mantle boundary can be clearly identified from the calculated transverse component seismogram.
A Possible Cause of Magnetic Anomalies on the Southern Martian Hemisphere

Abstract:From the topology of a synthetic aurora map, we propose a mechanism for the magnetic anomalies on the southern martian hemisphere, i.e., impacts by asteroids when the dynamo is active. The quasi concentric circles of aurora suggest that there are two-to-three convectional cells for each impact. The whole synthetic aurora is induced by three major impacts of asteroids. The east-west lineation features of crust magnetizations are due to the east-west trending locations of three impacts. The alternatively changed sign of crust magnetization originates from the alternatively changed flow direction on the tops of adjacent convectional cells.
Electrical and seismological structure of the martian mantle and the detectability of impact-generated anomalies

Abstract:We derive synthetic electrical conductivity, seismic velocity, and density distributions from the results of martian mantle convection models affected by basin-forming meteorite impacts. The electrical conductivity features an intermediate minimum in the strongly depleted topmost mantle, sandwiched between higher conductivities in the lower crust and a smooth increase toward almost constant high values at depths greater than 400 km. The bulk sound speed increases mostly smoothly throughout the mantle, with only one marked change at the appearance of $\beta$-olivine near 1100 km depth. An assessment of the detectability of the subsurface traces of an impact suggests that its signature would be visible in both observables at least if efficient melt extraction from the shock-molten target occurs, but it will not always be particularly conspicuous even for large basins; observations with extensive spatial and temporal coverage would improve their detectability. Electromagnetic sounding may offer another possibility to investigate the properties of the mantle, especially in regions of impact structures. In comparison with seismology and gravimetry, its application to the martian interior has received little consideration so far. Of particular interest is its potential for constraining the water content of the mantle. By comparing electromagnetic sounding data of an impact structure with model predictions, it might also be possible to answer the open question of the efficiency of extraction of impact-generated melt.

Spatial Structures of Magnetic Depression in the Earth's High‐altitude Cusp: Cluster Multipoint Observations

Abstract:Magnetic depression structures (magnetic holes) of short time duration from seconds to minutes have been studied using Cluster data in the high‐latitude cusp. Our multispacecraft analysis revealed that the magnetic depressions are spatial structures traveling across the spacecraft, and this result was further strengthened by the calculation of the boundary normal directions and velocities using various methods. In this article, we show that multiple properties of the magnetic depressions are consistent with those of mirror structures observed in the magnetosheath or solar wind. The plasma in the cusp is rarely unstable with respect to mirror instability. However, as has been shown by previous studies, once a large magnetic hole is created by mirror instability, it becomes relatively stable and can survive for extended periods of time even if surrounding plasma conditions drop well below the mirror threshold. Although local generation of these structures cannot be completely ruled out in some cases, we propose an interpretation of the magnetic depressions observed in the cusp as mirror structures generated upstream and convected to the cusp by plasma flow. Specifically, the magnetic holes could be generated in the magnetosheath and enter the cusp due to the open geometry of the cusp magnetic field.

Abstract:Laboratory experiments have contributed significantly to the exploration of the fundamental physics of Earth's and planetary space plasma. In this work, a ground-based plasma device was designed and constructed to study the plasma physics in the Martian boundary layer, where the solar wind plasma directly interacts with the Martian ionospheric plasma, and the underlying physical mechanisms and processes are not fully understood. The solar wind plasma and the Martian ionospheric plasma were simulated using two independent plasma sources. A Kaufman source was used to simulate the low-density, high-velocity solar wind plasma, and a lanthanum hexaboride source was utilized to simulate the high-density, low-velocity Martian ionospheric plasma. Additionally, the crustal magnetic field of Mars was modeled using a rotatable electromagnet. The initial results suggest that the interaction in the Martian boundary layer can be simulated based on the device, and the boundary layer's structure, location, and physical processes can be experimentally studied in the future.
