Abstract:Increase of concentrations of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in atmosphere have garnered lots of attention due to the associated risk of global warming. Carbon footprint (CF) is a measure that is extensively used to assess the contribution of an individual, event, organization, or product to global climate change. In the current study, the CF of five agricultural systems with different crop systems in different regions in China was evaluated in terms of CO2 eq per hectare, per kg crop yield, and per unit economic output, association with soil GHGs, agrochemical production and soil organic carbon (SOC) change. The results showed that direct nitrous oxide accounted for 61.9–97.8% of total soil GHG emissions in upland fields (agroforestry system, summer maize-winter wheat rotation tillage system, maize-soybean intercropping system, and continuous maize tillage system), while soil methane accounted for 89.9–95.1% of total soil GHG emissions in the paddy field (double rice-winter crop rotation system). GHGs produced from agricultural inputs varied from 2698.7 to 9781.5 kg CO2 eq ha−1 yr−1 among different agricultural systems. Nitrogen fertilizer was the dominant source of GHGs, which accounted for 47.4–92.4% of the total emission. Annual SOC increase ranged from −639.9–13823.9 kg CO2 eq ha−1 yr−1 in the five agricultural systems. Increases of SOC in the treatment of “reduced tillage with straw return” offset all of the total GHG emissions while “conventional tillage without straw return” decreased SOC storage in the continuous maize tillage system. An increase of SOC in crop systems of the other four agricultural systems could offset 23.2–66.7% of the total GHG emissions. Carbon emissions per hectare in the double rice-winter crop rotation system (7339.93–22994.17 kg CO2 eq ha−1 yr−1) were higher than the other four agricultural systems (−744.96–6523.12 kg CO2 eq ha−1 yr−1). In terms of crop yield, CFs of the summer maize-winter wheat rotation tillage system (0.28–0.34 kg CO2 eq kg−1 yr−1) were lower than those from the other four agricultural systems (0.39–2.83 kg CO2 eq kg−1 yr−1), except for the treatment with reduced tillage and residue return in the continuous maize tillage system. Similarly, CFs, as quantified via per unit economic output of the agroforestry system (0.12–0.19 kg CO2 eq ¥−1 yr−1), were lower than those in other the four systems (0.26–0.89 kg CO2 eq ¥−1 yr−1).Different evaluation methodology greatly affected the CF of different crop systems and mostly likely contributed to the contrary evaluation results, especially in the complex system of various crop systems (agroforestry and double rice-winter crop rotation system) in current study. Evaluation results of the CF of an agricultural system depends highly on the methodology used and may suggest different management decisions for lowering CF to promote the development of cleaner production.

Drivers and Reduction Potential of Carbon Emissions from Cultivated Land Use

Abstract:Cultivated land is both a carbon source and sink, and can both directly and indirectly affect the carbon cycle. As a major agricultural country, low-carbon and sustainable utilization of cultivated land in China is crucial to achieving its carbon neutrality goals. Using data from 31 provinces in China, the carbon emissions and intensity of cultivated land use between 2000 and 2020 were calculated. The driving factors and impact mechanisms of carbon intensity were analyzed. Finally, a carbon emission reduction potential index was constructed to explore the carbon emission reduction potential of cultivated land use under different preference scenarios. Total carbon emissions from cultivated land use in China increased from 201.848 million tons in 2000 to 227.4715 million tons in 2020 (an increase of 12.7%). The carbon emission intensity reached a minimum in 2003 (0.79 tons/ha) and a maximum in 2017 (1.01 tons/ha). The proportion of paddy fields, multiple cropping indices, proportion of effective irrigated areas, degree of agricultural chemicalization, and total power of agricultural machinery were the main drivers of carbon emission intensity of cultivated land use. The shadow prices of carbon emissions from cultivated land use were relatively high in Guizhou, Qinghai, and Beijing, amounting to 35.13, 33.54, and 23.97 million yuan per ton, respectively, whereas those in southeastern regions, such as Jiangsu and Shanghai, were low. In addition, under all three preference scenarios (equal equity and efficiency, equity first, and efficiency first), Jiangsu had high emission reduction potentials (up to 0.880, 0.861, and 0.900, respectively), allowing it to share more responsibility for reducing emissions. In contrast, Qinghai had the lowest emission reduction potentials in the study area, reaching 0.064, 0.078, and 0.051 for the equal equity and efficiency, equity first, and efficiency first scenarios, respectively. The results of this study suggest that the agricultural system has the potential to help China realize its carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals through the implementation of new technologies, policies, and management tools. As such, our results provide a reference for future policy development and low-carbon land use management that is better tailored to regional variability.
Trends, distribution, and impact factors of carbon footprints of main grains production in China

Abstract:China is the largest emitter of greenhouse gas (GHG) and has the largest agriculture production in the world, and thus, fully understanding the country's agricultural GHG emissions is of considerable importance. This study evaluates the critical processes, patterns, and impact factors of the carbon footprint of grain production in China based on a new scale data set: agricultural statistics data of over 300 prefecture-level regions. Results show that fertilizer application, straw burning, and methane emissions in rice paddy are the main causes of GHG emissions. High production carbon footprint (PCF) typically appears in areas with low crop yield, whereas low PCF appears in areas with intensive production. Longitude, altitude, and per unit yield are significant correlated with the methane emissions in rice paddy. The increase in GHG emissions from fertilizer application on per unit crop yield highly contributes to the increase in PCF. Moreover, longitude, latitude, and soil properties are the most important factors in PCF variation. Promoting large-scale and intensive modern agriculture production remains a key measure to mitigate GHG emission. Findings can improve the understanding of China's agricultural GHG emissions and subsequently be translated into management suggestions for GHG mitigation.

Abstract:The rapid growth of crop yield in China was maintained by more fossil fuel inputs in the past years, causing concern about the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions related to crop production. Therefore, this study analyzed historical dynamics of carbon footprint (CF) of 11 major crops in China during 2000–2016 and estimated possible GHG emissions of the system in 2020 under different scenarios. Results indicated that the GHG emissions of the Chinese crop system increased by 20.07% from 2000 to 2016, in which the grain crops contributed to more than 80% of the total emissions. The GHG emissions from grain crops including maize, wheat, and rice as well as sugar crops including sugarcane and sugar beet were increased by 28.07% and 14.27% in the study period, respectively, making up the primary factor of increased GHG emissions of crop system in China. Moreover, if the cropping pattern and agricultural practices is not improved in the future, the GHG emissions from Chinese crop system are estimated to increase by 346.19 million tons in 2020. If advanced agricultural policies and practices are implemented, the GHGs emissions of crop system in China in 2020 are estimated to be 2.92–12.62% lower than that in 2016. Overall, this study illustrated that the crop system in China contributed to the growth of GHG emissions in China over the past decades. Improving utilization efficiency of fertilizers and crop structure in China are the most important ways to reduce GHG emissions from the Chinese crop system.

Abstract:Understanding the spatiotemporal patterns of carbon footprints (CFs) of grains production is important to formulate regional heterogeneous greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation strategies. This study evaluates the CFs, farm CFs (FCFs: CFs of per unit area), and production CFs (PCFs: CFs of per unit yield) of main grains production in China based on a new scale data set: agricultural statistics data of over 300 prefecture-level regions. A comparison of CFs of main grains production between main producing area (MPA) and non-main producing area (NMPA) are firstly discussed on a totally new scale. Results show that the CFs of main grains production of MPA accounts for 54–57% of country’s total although the area of farmland of MPA only accounts for 42%. The PCF and FCF of rice production are higher in MPA, while those of wheat and maize production are lower in MPA. It implies that there are less GHG emission of rice (main paddy grain) productions in NMPA and less GHG emission of wheat and maize (main dryland grains) production in MPA. In additional, the PCF of rice shows growth, while that of wheat and maize shows decline from 2008 to 2017. The growth of PCF of rice is mainly driven by the rise of PCF in MPA. Findings are expected to improve the understanding patterns of China’s CF of main grains production and subsequently contribute to GHG mitigation.

Abstract:Balancing crop production and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions from agriculture soil requires a better understanding and quantification of crop GHGs emission intensity, a measure of GHG emissions per unit crop production. Here, we conduct a state‐of‐the‐art estimate of the spatial‐temporal variability of GHG emission intensities for wheat, maize, and rice in China from 1949‐2012 using an improved agricultural ecosystem model (DLEM‐AG2.0) and meta‐analysis covering 172 field‐GHG emission experiments. The results show that the GHG emission intensities of these croplands from 1949‐2012, on average, were 0.10‐1.31 kg CO2‐eq kg‐1, with a significant increase rate of 1.84‐3.58×10‐3 kg CO2‐eq kg‐1 yr‐1. Nitrogen fertilizer was the dominant factor contributing to the increase in GHG emission intensity in northern China and increased its impact in southern China in the 2000s. Increasing GHG emission intensity implies that excessive fertilizer failed to markedly stimulate crop yield increase in China but still exacerbated soil GHG emissions. This study found that overfertilization of more than 60% was mainly located in the winter wheat‐summer maize rotation systems in the North China Plain, the winter wheat‐rice rotation systems in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and southwest China, and most of the double rice systems in the South. Our simulations suggest that roughly a one‐third reduction in the current N fertilizer application level over these "overfertilization" regions would not significantly influence crop yield but decrease soil GHG emissions by 29.60%‐32.50% and GHG emission intensity by 0.13‐0.25 kg CO2‐eq kg‐1. This reduction is about 29% and 5% of total agricultural soil GHG emissions in China and the world, respectively. This study suggests that improving nitrogen use efficiency would be an effective strategy to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and sustain China's food security.

Abstract:The field burning of agriculture straw residue is a common method to dispose waste after harvesting seasons in China. The burning of agricultural crop residue in open field which has been given little attention up till now represents an important source of CO2 for global warming concern. According to the CO2 emission factors of rice, wheat, and corn straws based on laboratory measurements, the amount of CO2 emission via agricultural crop residue open burning in China between 1996 and 2013 has been calculated. The diverse accounting methods and geographic information system (GIS) are used to map the CO2 emission of thirty-one provinces. Identifying the spatial distribution, 5-year average variation, and contributions of CO2 emission by three major agricultural residue open burning, it is found: (i) About 2707.34 Tg of CO2 is emitted by agriculture residue open burning, occupies 45.09% of the total residential coal consumption from 1996 to 2013 (ii) The total emission from rice, wheat and corn straw burning are concentrated in south and northeast of China, North China and northeast of China, respectively (iii) Shandong Province contributes the largest portion of CO2 emission, Henan, Jiangsu, Hebei and Hei Longjiang rank the second, third, forth, and fifth, respectively. From different level of CO2 emission by agricultural crop residue open burning, we can find mitigation potential of greenhouse gas emission and give three suggestions: (i) generalizing straw returning field application (ii) improving the efficiency of straw utilization (iii) commercializing biomass,energy. However, the mitigation potential, and varied policies and regulations need to be developed which are related to the local economic and environmental conditions in different China rural places. Abstract:Abstract Inappropriate farm management practices can lead to increased agricultural inputs and changes in atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, impacting climate change. This study was initiated in 2012 to assess the potential for straw retention to mitigate the negative environmental impact of various cropping systems on the Songnen Plain using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method combined with field survey data. Straw retention (STR) and straw removal (STM) treatments were established in continuous corn (CC) and corn-soybean rotation (CS) systems in a split-plot experiment. The effects of straw retention on the carbon footprint (CF) of cropland under different cropping systems were compared. The CF under CC was 2434–2707 kg CO 2 ha −1 year −1 , 49–57% higher than that under CS. Nitrogen fertilizer produced the most CO 2 , accounting for 66–80% of the CF. The carbon balances of the CC and CS systems with STR were positive, with annual carbon sequestrations of 9633 and 2716 kg CO 2 ha −1 year −1 , respectively. The carbon balance (CB) of CC-STR was 255% higher than that of CS-STR. This study demonstrates that STR under CC cultivation is an environmentally friendly practice for agricultural production, can help achieve high-yield and low-carbon production in rainfed cropland, and can support the sustainable development of grain production in Northeast China.

Abstract:Fast development of farming practices in China is projected to result in additional carbon emissions and thus affect farmland ecosystems' environmental performance. Based on 454 farm surveys on the North and Northeast China Plain, the carbon footprint (CF) of two farmland ecosystems (irrigated system for wheat and maize on the North China Plain and rainfed system for maize on the Northeast Plain) were assessed and emission reduction pathways explored by quantifying greenhouse gas emissions of agricultural inputs and farm practices during the entire crop growing seasons with an agricultural footprint model. The results demonstrated that the GHG emissions from wheat and maize rotation in the irrigated system were 7.63 t CO 2 eq ha −1 and 3.17 t CO 2 eq ha −1 for single season maize in the rainfed system. While energy consumption accounted for 12.5%–21.3% of the carbon footprint in both systems, the group assessment found that the largest difference in GHG emissions between the high and low emission groups came from mechanical energy consumption. Approximately 50.6% and 39.2% of the mechanical carbon footprint of wheat and maize, respectively, were caused by irrigation practices in the irrigated system. Regarding the rainfed system, where 46.6% of mechanical carbon emissions were generated by maize tillage operations. In addition, scenario analysis indicated that the mechanical carbon footprint could be reduced to 56 kg CO 2 eq t −1 for NCP-wheat and 26 kg CO 2 eq t −1 for NCP-maize, respectively, by optimizing yields and irrigation practices in irrigated systems and that the mechanical carbon footprint of NEP-maize could be reduced to 25 kg CO 2 eq t −1 by optimizing yields and tillage practices in rainfed systems. Therefore, improvement in mechanization in irrigation and tillage practices can contribute to reduce GHG emissions in China. Water-saving irrigation technology is recommended in irrigated area and conservation tillage is recommended in rainfed agricultural area to reduce carbon footprints.

Abstract:Soil carbon sequestration is being considered as a potential pathway to mitigate climate change. Cropland soils could provide a sink for carbon that can be modified by farming practices; however, they can also act as a source of greenhouse gases (GHG), including not only nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4), but also the upstream carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions associated with agronomic management. These latter emissions are also sometimes termed “hidden” or “embedded” CO2. In this paper, we estimated the net GHG balance for Chinese cropping systems by considering the balance of soil carbon sequestration, N2O and CH4 emissions, and the upstream CO2 emissions of agronomic management from a life cycle perspective during 2000–2017. Results showed that although soil organic carbon (SOC) increased by 23.2 ± 8.6 Tg C per year, the soil N2O and CH4 emissions plus upstream CO2 emissions arising from agronomic management added 269.5 ± 21.1 Tg C‐eq per year to the atmosphere. These findings demonstrate that Chinese cropping systems are a net source of GHG emissions and that total GHG emissions are about 12 times larger than carbon uptake by soil sequestration. There were large variations between different cropping systems in the net GHG balance ranging from 328 to 7,567 kg C‐eq ha−1 year−1, but all systems act as a net GHG source to the atmosphere. The main sources of total GHG emissions are nitrogen fertilization (emissions during production and application), power use for irrigation, and soil N2O and CH4 emissions. Optimizing agronomic management practices, especially fertilization, irrigation, plastic mulching, and crop residues to reduce total GHG emissions from the whole chain is urgently required in order to develop a low‐carbon future for Chinese crop production.

Abstract:Agriculture accounts for approximately 11% of China's national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Through adoption of region-specific best management practices, Chinese farmers can contribute to emission reduction while maintaining food security for its large population (>1300 Million). This paper presents the outcome of a bottom-up assessment to quantify technical potential of mitigation measures for Chinese agriculture using meta-analysis of data from 240 publications for cropland, 67 publications for grassland and 139 publications for livestock, and provides the reference scenario for the cost analysis of identified mitigation measures. Management options with greatest mitigation potential for rice, or rice-based cropping systems are conservation tillage, controlled irrigation; replacement of urea with ammonium sulphate, nitrogen (N) inhibitor application, reduced N fertilizer application, integrated rice-fish-duck farming and biochar application. A 15% reduction in current average synthetic N fertilizer application for rice in China i.e., 231 kg N ha(-1), would result in 12% decrease in direct soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Combined application of chemical and organic fertilizer, conservation tillage, biochar application and reduced N application are possible measures that can reduce overall GHG emissions from upland cropping systems. Conventional fertilizer inputs for greenhouse vegetables are more than 2-8 times the optimal crop nutrient demand. A 20-40% reduction in N fertilizer application to vegetable crops can reduce N2O emissions by 32-121%, while not negatively impacting the yield. One of the most important mitigation measures for agricultural grasslands could be conversion of low yielding cropland, particularly on slopes, to shrub land or grassland, which is also a promising option to decrease soil erosion. In addition, grazing exclusion and reduced grazing intensity can increase SOC sequestration and decrease overall emissions while improving the largely degraded grasslands. For livestock production, where poor quality forage is commonly fed, improving grazing management and diet quality can reduce methane (CH4) emissions by 11% and 5%, on average. Dietary supplements can reduce CH4 emissions further, with lipids (15% reduction) and tannins or saponins (11% reduction) showing the greatest potential. We also suggest the most economically cost-effective mitigation measures, drawing on related work on the construction of marginal abatement cost curves for the sector. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The Carbon Footprint and Influencing Factors of the Main Grain Crops in the North China Plain

Abstract:The North China Plain (NCP) serves as a critical grain-producing region in China, playing a pivotal role in ensuring the nation’s food security. A comprehensive analysis of the carbon footprint (CF) related to the cultivation of major grain crops within this region and the proposal of strategies to reduce emissions through low-carbon production methods are crucial for advancing sustainable agricultural practices in China. This study employed the lifecycle assessment (LCA) method to estimate the CF of wheat, maize, and rice crops over a period from 2013 to 2022, based on statistical data collected from five key provinces and cities in the NCP: Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, and Henan. Additionally, the Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) model was utilized to analyze the influencing factors. The results indicated that the carbon footprints per unit area (CFA) of maize, wheat, and rice increased between 2013 and 2022. Rice had the highest carbon footprint per unit yield (CFY), averaging 1.1 kg CO2-eq kg−1, with significant fluctuations over time. In contrast, the CFY of wheat and maize remained relatively stable from 2013 to 2022. Fertilizers contributed the most to CF composition, accounting for 48.8%, 48.0%, and 25.9% of the total carbon inputs for wheat, maize, and rice, respectively. The electricity used for irrigation in rice production was 31.8%, which was much higher than that of wheat (6.8%) and maize (7.1%). The LMDI model showed that the labor effect was a common suppressing factor for the carbon emissions of maize, wheat, and rice in the NCP, while the agricultural structure effect and the economic development effect were common driving factors. By improving the efficiency of fertilizer and pesticide utilization, cultivating new varieties, increasing the mechanical operation efficiency, the irrigation efficiency, and policy support, the CF of grain crop production in the NCP can be effectively reduced. These efforts will contribute to the sustainable development of agricultural practices in the NCP and support China’s efforts to achieve its “double carbon” target.

Abstract:Analyzing the carbon footprint of crop production and proposing low-carbon emission reduction production strategies can help China develop sustainable agriculture under the goal of 'carbon peak and carbon neutrality'. Cotton is an economically important crop in China, but few reports have systematically quantified the carbon footprint of China's cotton production and analyzed its spatiotemporal changes and driving factors. This study used a life cycle approach to analyze the spatiotemporal changes and identify the main components and driving factors of the carbon footprint of cotton production in China between 2004 and 2018 based on statistical data. The results showed that the carbon footprint per unit area of cotton in Northwest China, the Yellow River Basin and the Yangtze River Basin reached 6220.13 kg CO2eq·ha-1, 3528.14 kg CO2eq·ha-1 and 2958.56 kg CO2eq·ha-1, respectively. From 2004 to 2018, the CFa in the Yellow River Basin and Northwest China increased annually, with average increases of 59.87 kg CO2eq·ha-1 and 260.70 kg CO2eq·ha-1, respectively, while the CFa in the Yangtze River Basin decreased by an average of 21.53 kg CO2eq·ha-1 per year. The ridge regression and Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index (LMDI) model showed that fertilizer, irrigation electricity and agricultural film were the main influences on carbon emission growth at the micro level and that the economic factor was the key factor at the macro level. Improving the efficiency of cotton fertilization and electricity use and ensuring the high-quality development of the cotton industry are effective strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of cotton cultivation in the future. This study comprehensively uses statistical data and mathematical modeling to provide theoretical support for accounting and in-depth analysis of cotton carbon emissions. The results are valuable for policy making related to sustainable development and the low-carbon development of the Chinese cotton industry.

The Great Climate Mitigation Potential of Cropland Ecosystem Management in China

Abstract:Limiting climate warming to below 2°C requires more intense mitigation efforts. Alongside the steep reductions in fossil fuel emissions needed, natural climate solutions (NCS) act as an additional first step toward achieving China's emission reduction goals. We first quantified the historical contribution of NCS as 0.34 PgCO2 equivalent (PgCO2e) yr−1 through the implemented national ecological restoration projects as well as positive management measures. Based on successful practices, we then designed 21 pathways to quantify the potential of NCS in increasing terrestrial carbon sinks or reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in forest, grassland, cropland, and wetland ecosystems. We show that the maximum mitigation potential of NCS between 2020 and 2060 under guaranteed food and fiber security is 1.95 (1.54–2.38) PgCO2e yr−1 (95% CI), which can offset nearly 20% of the annual net emissions. Historically, forest ecosystems have contributed the most to carbon sequestration; however, future projections show cropland ecosystems will account for the largest proportion (47.6%), followed by forest ecosystems. Approximately 47% (0.91 PgCO2e yr−1) of the maximum represents cost‐effective mitigation potential that can be realized at ≤100 USD/MgCO2e. Conservation tillage is the most cost‐effective option in China, achieving a maximum contribution of 181.60 TgCO2e yr−1. In addition, a series of cropland management measures have contributed 1.14 PgCO2e in the past two decades. Our study highlights the high effectiveness of cropland pathways in reducing carbon emissions and emphasizes the key role of cropland ecosystems in mitigating climate change.

Abstract:Agriculture plays an important role in greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions and reactive nitrogen (Nr) loss. Therefore, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) footprint reductions in agro-ecosystem have become an increasingly hot topic in global climate change and agricultural adaptation. The objective of this study was to assess the C footprint (CF) and N footprint (NF) of double rice (Oryza sativa L.) production using life cycle assessment method in Southern China. The results showed that fertilizer application and farm machinery operation contributed the most to both GHGs and Nr emissions from agricultural inputs in the double rice production process. The CF for the early, late, and double rice was 0.86, 0.83, and 0.85kgCO2-eqkg−1year−1 at yield-scale, respectively. In addition, the NF was 10.47, 10.89, and 10.68gN-eqkg−1year−1 at yield-scale for the early, late and double rice, respectively. The largest fraction of CF and NF of double rice was the share of CH4 emission and NH3 volatilization from the paddy field, respectively. Higher CF and NF at yield-scale for Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan provinces were presented, compared to the average level in double rice cropping for the region, while smaller than those of Jiangxi, Hubei, and Hunan provinces. Some effective solutions would be favorable toward mitigating climate change and eutrophication of the double rice cropping region in Southern China, including reduction of fertilizer application rates, improvements in farm machinery operation efficiencies, and changes in regional allocation of double rice cropping areas.

The carbon emission reduction benefits of the transformation of the intensive use of cultivated land in China

Abstract:The transformation of the intensive use of cultivated land has an important impact on agricultural carbon emissions (ACE). However, the existing research on the impact mechanisms of the transformation of intensive use of cultivated land on carbon emissions is not clear. In view of this, this study constructs the impact mechanism of the transformation of intensive use of cultivated land on carbon emissions from the perspective of production factors substitution based on the theory of induced technological change and the theory of marginal returns. Using the Cobb-Douglas production function, this study identifies the transformation patterns of intensive use of cultivated land in China from 1980 to 2021. Furthermore, this study simulates the carbon emission reduction benefits brought about by the transformation of the intensive use of cultivated land by considering the cost of agricultural production. The results show that, first, from 1980 to 2021, the price of agricultural labor increased by 224.10%, while the price of other agricultural production factors significantly decreased. China's intensive use of cultivated land methods has undergone four stages: agricultural labor-intensive (ALI), yield-enhancing factor-intensive (YEFI), labor-saving factor-intensive (LSFI), and innovation factor-intensive (IFI). In 2021, most of China's provinces were in the YEFI or ALI stages. Second, between 1993 and 2021, the transformation of China's intensive use of cultivated land brought about an 87.48% increase in carbon emissions, while the spatial clustering effect of carbon emissions weakened. Furthermore, the results show that, the transition of the use of cultivated land from ALI to YEFI and YEFI to LSFI will reduce carbon emissions by 7.89%, and input factors costs will increase by 23.85%. If all regions, except for those in the IFI stage, transition to the LSFI model, it will result in a 17.56% reduction in carbon emissions, with a corresponding increase of 33.40% of the input factors input costs. This research enriches the theoretical foundation of literature about the transformation of the intensive use of cultivated land. It also expands the research perspective on agricultural carbon emissions. This research also helps provide references for the direction of the transformation of the intensive use of cultivated land in China and the achievement of the dual carbon goals.

Abstract:The increasing inter-provincial trade is prompting the regional transmission of agricultural carbon footprint (ACF) in China. Understanding the factors driving this phenomenon is crucial for mitigating the carbon footprint of agricultural production. Nevertheless, comprehending the carbon flow of the agricultural industry within China remained insufficient. Furthermore, quantifying the driving forces behind ACF and carbon flow for a single year posed a significant challenge. In this study, we aim to uncover the distribution and flow pattern of the carbon footprint in China's agricultural industry using a multi-regional input-output model. Moreover, we introduce a novel approach by employing geographical detectors to analyze the influencing factors from a spatial heterogeneity perspective. The results reveal that China's ACF in 2015 amounted to 48,826.69 thousand tons of carbon equivalents (CO2eq). The ACF was generally higher in the northern regions and lower in the central areas. A Jevons paradox phenomenon was observed in Shandong, where ACF was higher, and agricultural carbon emission intensity was lower, suggesting that improvements in agricultural efficiency can paradoxically lead to increased carbon emissions. Notably, 39.39% of ACF was involved in regional transfers. The primary flow of agricultural carbon occurred from northern to southeastern coastal areas, with Guangdong (4447.49 thousand tons of CO2eq) and Heilongjiang (−2225.25 thousand tons of CO2eq) being the leading inflow and outflow provinces, respectively. Socioeconomic and agricultural factors played a significant role in shaping the distribution of ACF and its inter-regional transmission. Socioeconomic factors, including GDP, population, industry structure, and educational expenditure, predominantly influenced inflow ACF. Meanwhile, agricultural factors related to land use and grain output primarily affected outflow ACF. Suggestions for reducing carbon footprint in the agricultural sector was proposed based on the condition of ACF and flow types, from the production and consumption aspects. Provinces of ACF inflow and outflow should share the responsibility for reducing ACF, potentially through carbon trading and reciprocal technological assistance. This study offers substantial theoretical value by providing a comprehensive understanding of the spatial flow and driving factors of ACF within China's agricultural sector.

Abstract:Purpose The relationship between farm size and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has not been clearly defined. This paper aims to assess and compare the impact of farm size on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions derived from wheat and maize production in the North China Plain (NCP), one of the most important agricultural regions in China. Design/methodology/approach A field survey through face-to-face interviews was conducted to collect the primary data, and life cycle assessment method, a worldwide comparable framework, was then adopted to characterize the farm-size effect on greenhouse gas (GHG) wheat and maize production in NCP. Findings It was confirmed that GHG emissions from N fertilizer production and use were the primary contributor to total carbon footprint (CF). As farm size increased, maize yield increased but wheat yield barely changed, while area-scaled and yield-scaled CF declined for both crops. These results were supposed to relate to utilize the inputs more efficiently resulting from increased application of modern agriculture methods on larger operations. It was also found maize not only had higher grain yields, but possessed much smaller CFs. More notably, the reduction of CF with farm size seemed to be more sensitive for maize as compared to wheat. To further mitigate GHG emissions, farm size should better be larger for wheat than for maize. Originality/value This study provides useful information guide for Chinese agriculture in increasing crop production, raising farm income and relieving environmental burdens caused by the misuse of agricultural resources.

Abstract:SummaryFood chain systems (FCSs), which begin in agricultural production and end in consumption and waste disposal, play a significant role in China's rising greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This article uses scenario analysis to show China's potential trajectories to a low‐carbon FCS. Between 1996 and 2010, the GHG footprint of China's FCSs increased from 1,308 to 1,618 megatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2‐eq), although the emissions intensity of all food categories, except for aquatic food, recorded steep declines. We project three scenarios to 2050 based on historical trends and plausible shifts in policies and environmental conditions: reference scenario; technology improvement scenario; and low GHG emissions scenario. The reference scenario is based on existing trends and exhibits a large growth in GHG emissions, increasing from 1,585 Mt CO2‐eq in 2010 to 2,505 Mt CO2‐eq in 2050. In the technology improvement scenario, emissions growth is driven by rising food demand, but that growth will be counterbalanced by gains in agricultural technology, causing GHG emissions to fall to 1,413 Mt CO2‐eq by 2050. Combining technology improvement with the shift to healthier dietary patterns, GHG emissions in the low GHG emissions scenario will decline to 946 Mt CO2‐eq in 2050, a drop of 41.5% compared with the level in 2010. We argue that these are realistic projections and are indeed indicative of China's overall strategy for low‐carbon development. Improving agricultural technology and shifting to a more balanced diet could significantly reduce the GHG footprint of China's FCSs. Furthermore, the transition to a low‐carbon FCS has potential cobenefits for land sustainability and public health.

Abstract:The widespread and scattered smallholders in China have a profound impact on agricultural production in response to climate change. Using the data of peasant household obtained from survey and the factor coefficients collected in Shaanxi Province of China, the carbon footprint (CF) of farmer's agricultural production (FAP) was estimated by a multi system boundary scenarios approach to judge the contribution of FAP for climate change reasonably. The results showed that the agricultural activities' carbon footprint (ACF), farm's carbon footprint (FCF) and product's carbon footprint (PCF) of wheat, maize, rice and apple crops in FAP exhibited significant differences in four scenarios, and the positive climate externalities of FAP rely on its own duality of carbon effect. Distribution structure of ACF in FAP subsystem under the four scenarios indicated that allocation of emission responsibility has a significant impact on the carbon effect of FAP. The categories of key source in FAP were greenhouse gas emissions from heterotrophic soil respiration in agro-ecosystem (AE), chemical fertilizer in raw material production system (RMPS), diesel or gasoline in RMPS and agricultural production system and direct N2O emissions in AE, and the key sink categories were carbon sequestration from crop biomass and cropland management in AE. Therefore, the ecological benefits should be embedded in the economic benefit-oriented agricultural production policy objectives, in order to reduce the dependence on high energy-consuming industrial products in FAP, optimize the agricultural industrial structure and guide farmers from cleaner production behavior. Besides, the uncertainties of CF accounting method drop significantly which we improved by integrating carbon-nitrogen cycle into life cycle assessment theory.
