Abstract:As one of the remediation reagents, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is injected to the aquifer, degrading trichloroethylene (TCE) by chemical oxidation. This study investigated the kinetics of TCE degradation by series of batch experiments, as well as the influence of medium size. Moreover, phase-transfer catalyst (PTCs), such as pentyltriphenylphosphonium bromide (PTPP) and sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) were used for enhancing oxidation. The batch experimental results showed that in the absence of PTC, the removal efficiency of TCE was 36.14% and 86.79% within 4 and 30 min, respectively. However, the removal rate of TCE was up to 67.48% and 49.90% within 4 min for 15 mol% PTPP- and SHMP-added system, respectively. The results indicated that PTPP and SHMP promoted the depletion of MnO4− to oxidize DNAPL TCE, but its effectiveness varied with the addition ratio of PTPP or SHMP. Its promotion was more remarkable when PTC added with a higher proportion. The alleviation of MnO2 by phosphates (PO43−, HPO42− and H2PO4−) or PTC in the presence of media was qualitatively investigated. Results showed that the content of MnO2 in the dissolved phase during the same reaction period decreased by PTC. Moreover, HPO42− and SHMP have apparent beneficial effects of reducing MnO2 formation. The presence of aquifer media has a pH buffer and a negative influence on the reaction between TCE and the oxidant; moreover, as particle size of media decreased, the negative effect increased.

Abstract:Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) preoxidation is capable of enhancing cyanobacteria cell removal. However, the impacts of KMnO4 on cell viability and potential toxin release have not been comprehensively characterized. In this study, the impacts of KMnO4 on Microcystis aeruginosa inactivation and on the release and degradation of intracellular microcystin-LR (MC-LR) and other featured organic matter were investigated. KMnO4 oxidation of M. aeruginosa exhibited some kinetic patterns that were different from standard chemical reactions. Results indicated that cell viability loss and MC-LR release both followed two-segment second-order kinetics with turning points of KMnO4 exposure (ct) at ct(y) and ct(r), respectively. KMnO4 primarily reacted with dissolved and cell-bound extracellular organic matter (mucilage) and resulted in a minor loss of cell viability and MC-LR release before the ct value reached ct(y). Thereafter, KMnO4 approached the inner layer of the cell wall and resulted in a rapid decrease of cell viability. Further increase of ct to ct(r) led to cell lysis and massive release of intracellular MC-LR. The MC-LR release rate was generally much slower than its degradation rate during permanganation. However, MC-LR continued to be released even after total depletion of KMnO4, which led to a great increase in MC-LR concentration in the treated water.
DNAPL remediation with in situ chemical oxidation using potassium permanganate. Part I. Mineralogy of Mn oxide and its dissolution in organic acids

Abstract:Previous studies on in situ chemical oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE) with potassium permanganate indicated that the solid reaction product, Mn oxide, could reduce the permeability of the porous medium and impact the success of dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) removal. In order to address the issue of permeability reduction caused by precipitation, this study investigated the mineralogy of Mn oxides and the possibilities of removing the solid precipitates by dissolution. The solid reaction product from the oxidation of TCE by permanganate is semi-amorphous potassium-rich birnessite, which has a layered mineral structure with an interlayer spacing of 7.3 A. The chemical formula is K(0.854)Mn(1.786)O(4).1.55H(2)O. It has a relatively small specific surface area at 23.6+/-0.82 m(2)/g. Its point of zero charge (pzc) was measured as 3.7+/-0.4. This birnessite is a relatively active species and could participate in various reactions with existing organic and inorganic matter. The dissolution kinetics of Mn oxide was evaluated in batch experiments using solutions of citric acid, oxalic acid, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA). Initial dissolution rates were determined to be 0.126 mM/m(2)/h for citric acid, 1.35 mM/m(2)/h for oxalic acid, and 5.176 mM/m(2)/h for EDTA. These rates compare with 0.0025 mM/m(2)/h for nitric acid at pH=2. Organic acids dissolve Mn oxide quickly. Reaction rates increase with acid concentration, as tested with citric acid. The dissolution mechanism likely involves proton and ligand-promoted dissolution and reductive dissolution. Citric and oxalic acid can induce ligand-promoted dissolution, while EDTA can induce ligand-promoted and reductive dissolutions. At low pH, proton-promoted dissolution seems to occur with all the acids tested, but this process is not dominant. Reductive dissolution appears to be the most effective process in dissolving the solid, followed by ligand-promoted dissolution. These experiments indicate the significant potential in using these organic acids to remove precipitates formed during the oxidation reaction.
The remediation performance and mechanism for tetracycline from groundwater using controlled release materials containing mesoporous MnOx with different morphology

Abstract:Aiming at the effective remediation of antibiotic contaminants in groundwater, in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO), using controlled release materials (CRMs) as an oxidant deliverer, has emerged as a promising technique due to their long-term effective pollutant removal performance. This study used different microstructures of mesoporous manganese oxide (MnOx) and sodium persulfate as active components to fabricate CRMs. Following that, a comparative study of tetracycline (TC) degradation and the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by mesoporous MnOx powder and CRMs were conducted. The ROS formed during peroxodisulfate (PDS) activation by powder catalysts and CRMs differed, but MnOx powder catalysts and CRMs both had good reaction stoichiometric efficiency (RSE) for PDS, thus completely mineralizing TC. In PDS activation by mesoporous MnOx powder, oxygen vacancies (OVs) caused by defects in the catalysts contributed to the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2). The 1O2 and free radicals (·SO4- and ·OH) both worked as major ROS participating in TC degradation. Concerning the release of CRMs in static groundwater, the immobilization of catalysts inside CRMs made it difficult to release 1O2 in the solution, thus slowing the degradation of TC by CRMs containing MnOx(1) in static groundwater. In the TC remediation in dynamic groundwater, the water flowing slowly passed through the CRM layer, and TC molecules were trapped. Therefore, 1O2 degraded the trapped TC in the CRM layer in dynamic groundwater. Compared to TC, the toxicity of most intermediates during the TC degradation by CRMs has decreased in static and dynamic groundwater.

Abstract:Controlled release materials (CRMs) are an emerging oxidant delivery technique for in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) that solve the problems of contaminant rebound, backflow and wake during groundwater remediation. CRMs were fabricated using ordered mesoporous manganese oxide (O-MnOx) and sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) as active components, for the removal of antibiotic pollutants from groundwater. In both static and dynamic groundwater environments, persulfate can first be activated by O-MnOx within CRMs to form sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals, with these radicals subsequently dissolving out from the CRMs and degrading tetracycline (TC). Due to their excellent persulfate activation performance and good stability, the constructed CRMs could effectively degrade TC in both static and dynamic simulated groundwater systems over a long period (>21 days). The TC removal rate reached >80 %. Changing the added content of O-MnOx and persulfate could effectively regulate the performance of the CRMs during TC degradation in groundwater. The process and products of TC degradation in the dynamic groundwater system were the same as in the static groundwater system. Due to the strong oxidizing properties of sulfate radicals and hydroxyl radicals, TC molecules were completely mineralized within the groundwater systems, resulting in only trace levels of degradation products being detectable, with low- or non-toxicity. Therefore, the CRMs constructed in this study exhibited good potential for practical application in the remediation of organic pollutants from both static and dynamic groundwater environments.
Removal of Micropollutants and Cyanobacteria from Drinking Water Using KMnO4 Pre-Oxidation Coupled with Bioaugmentation.

Abstract:Increasing micropollutant and cyanobacterial contamination of drinking water threatens human health worldwide. However, these contaminates are not efficiently removed by common drinking water treatment processes, and thus additional treatments are frequently required. Recent investigations have demonstrated that KMnO4 pre-oxidation can efficiently remove some micropollutants and cyanobacteria but the release of cyanobacterial toxins and Mn2+ limit its use. To overcome these problems, we proposed a KMnO4 pre-oxidation coupled with bioaugmentation (e.g., sand filtration) method to treat micropollutant- and cyanobacteria-laden water. We used 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone-5-sulfonic acid (BP-4, a common micropollutant in drinking water sources) and Microcystis aeruginosa (a widely distributed cyanobacterial species) as model pollutants to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. Results revealed that KMnO4 pre-oxidation efficiently removed existing natural organic matter and Microcystis aeruginosa but failed to remove BP-4 and released Mn2+ and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) during treatment. Following the addition of a manganese-oxidizing bacterial strain (Pseudomonas sp. QJX-1) to the KMnO4-treated solution, we found that the bacteria could transform Mn2+ to Mn(III&IV) oxides, with the formed Mn oxides then able to remove BP-4 and MC-LR. Overall, the proposed method exhibited advantages in the removal of natural organic matter (i.e., decreasing disinfection byproduct formation), micropollutants, and cyanobacteria as well as preventing the release of Mn2+, and thus may be considered a good alternative for treating polluted drinking water.
Removal of Trichloroethylene in Groundwater with Two Oxidants: Siderite Catalyzed Hydrogen Peroxide and Sodium Persulfate

Abstract:Trichloroethylene (TCE), a widely used solvent, is often determined in groundwater and is one of biologically refractory organic contaminants. The aim of the study is to use a new chemical oxidation method to degrade TCE source pollution in groundwater. Fenton-like reactions (hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by iron minerals generates hydroxyl radicals) and sodium persulfate activation (sodium persulfate activated by heat/iron minerals to produce sulfate radicals) have strong oxidative capacity to degrade a wide range of organic contaminants. In this work, hydrogen peroxide and/or sodium persulfate catalyzed by siderite (designated as STO, SO, PO systems, respectively) degrading TCE in groundwater were investigated. Removal rates of TCE in STO, SO, and PO systems were 100%, 57%, 20%, respectively. The order of TCE removal rates is in agreement with that of hydroxyl radicals generated in the systems, indicating that hydroxyl radicals play a critical role in removing TCE. No by-product except CO2, Cl− and H2O generated as final products in the STO system suggests that TCE was near completely mineralized. The results show that the STO is an effective method to treat TCE contaminated source in groundwater.

Abstract:The application of calcium peroxide (CaO 2 ) activated with ferrous ion chelate sodium citrate (TCD)to stimulate the degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) was investigated. The experimental results show that the removal efficiency of TCE increases first and then decreases with the increase of CaO 2 and Na 2 S 2 O 8 dosage; the chelation ratio of Fe(II)/TCD, too much or too little, will affect the removal efficiency of TCE; when the molar ratio of CaO 2 / Fe(II)/ TCD/ TCE is 18/6/6/1, the removal efficiency of TCE is the highest, reaching 97.99% within 200Min. The results demonstrated that the technique of CaO 2 activated with ferrous ion is a highly promising technique in in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) remediation in TCE contaminated sites.

Abstract:Permanganate-based ISCO (in situ chemical oxidation) has been commonly utilized to remediate chlorinated ethenes DNAPLs (dense non-aqueous phase liquids), but the treatment is seriously hindered by the formation of MnO2 rinds that encapsulate DNAPLs. We report herein a proactive approach to the MnO2 problem by chelating and stabilizing the Mn(III) species formed in situ, the precursors of MnO2. To identify suitable chelators for chelator-enhanced permanganate-based ISCO, chemical compatibility of sixteen representative commercial organic and inorganic chelators with permanganate was first investigated. Organic chelators generally induced rapid consumption of permanganate and concurrent severe MnO2 precipitation, when mixed with permanganate. In contrast, polyphosphate-based inorganic chelators showed high compatibility due to the redox-inert nature of the chelators. Among all chelators tested, only pyrophosphoric acid (PPA) could effectively stabilize the Mn(III) species and mitigate the generation and precipitation of MnO2, when permanganate was exposed to trichloroethene (TCE, a representative of chlorinated ethenes) liquid. Further studies showed that mitigation of MnO2 precipitation by PPA significantly improved permanganate oxidation of TCE DNAPL in the water/DNAPL biphasic system and in the sand column. Overall, the study indicates the potential of chelator-enhanced permanganate-based ISCO for the remediation of chlorinated ethenes DNAPLs.

Abstract:Sulfide-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI-S) has been considered as a promising material for in-situ chemical reduction processes (ISCRPs) for groundwater remediation. However, studies utilizing NZVI-S for in-situ chemical oxidation processes (ISCOPs) were relative rare. In this study, NZVI-S was synthesized and utilized to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of TCE. The effects of Fe/S molar ratio, initial pH on TCE removal and dechlorination by NZVI-S activated PS were studied. The results showed that, compared with bare NZVI, NZVI-S showed better properties in activating PS which included better pH adaptiveness, higher TCE removal and mineralization efficiency, and faster removal rate. The Fe/S molar ratio significantly influenced the TCE degradation, and the highest TCE degradation was observed at Fe/S molar ratio of 25–30. The underlying mechanisms of NZVI-S exceling NZVI in activating PS were elucidated through spectroscopic analyses that accounted for the higher iron dissolution rates and iron sulfides (e.g., FeS and FeSx) generated on its surface, which elevated the quantity and accelerated the transfer rate of electrons for activating PS. Besides, hydroxyl radical was observed as a dominant reactive radical in degrading TCE at various pH conditions, but sulfate radical also played an important part especially under acidic condition. Finally, the degradation products of TCE were analyzed and the possible pathways of TCE degradation were illustrated. And the slight influence of natural substances in groundwater on the degradation process suggests NZVI-S activated PS would be a promising approach for groundwater remediation.

Abstract:The effect of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) preoxidation on the treatment of low-turbidity reservoir water was investigated through two years of operational data in a large-scale drinking water treatment plant (DWTP). KMnO4 facilitated the removal of pollutants [e.g., turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (CODMn)] by different units such as clarification, sand filtration, and granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption. Although the addition of KMnO4 increased the color and total Mn concentrations, the results of removal by clarification and filtration are promising. The average run length of anthracite filters decreased from 48 to 40.8 hours after the introduction of KMnO4 and exhibited a negative correlation with KMnO4 dosages (r(2) = 0.6912). The hydrous manganese dioxide in situ formed (delta MnO2) dominated in aiding coagulation and improving filtration to enhance pollutant removal in the KMnO4 preoxidation process, and these effects were achieved at the expense of more frequent backwashing of anthracite filters. Remediation Of Tce Contaminated Site By Ozone Micro-Nano-Bubbles

Abstract:Micro-nano-bubbles (MNBs) technique is a novel technology for remediation of organics-contaminated groundwater. MNBs are tiny bubbles with diameter less than 100 mu m, and able to stay stable in water for extended periods of time. Ozone is a strong oxidant which is widely used in wastewater treatment, and ozone MNBs presented high mass transfer efficiency. They can migrate with groundwater flow to reach large affecting area, and efficiently provide dissolved ozone to oxidize organic contaminants in groundwater. In this study, the ozone MNBs were used for groundwater remediation at a trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated site in Japan. Groundwater was extracted by the extraction well, and pre-treated to remove soil particles and TCE. Ozone MNBs were generated inside the water. H2O2, which can significantly accelerate the oxidation of TCE by ozone, was also added with a mass ratio of ozone: H2O2 of 1:1. Water containing oxidants was injected back into the site through an injection well. The treatment was conducted from 9 am to 6 pm for six days, and groundwater was sampled from monitoring wells to monitor distribution of TCE concentration. The concentration of TCE in groundwater showed significant reduction during the treatment, and an overall removal of 99% was reached after six days. The final TCE concentration in the treated area decreased to below the local permissible limit, and this field application of ozone MNBs presented an efficient new technology for organics-contaminated site remediation.

Abstract:Electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) leachate contains high concentrations of Mn2+, NH4 +-N, and heavy metals, seriously damaging the ecological environment. In this study, the effects of different KMnO4 dosages on the migration and transformation of Mn2+ and NH4 +-N in EMR were investigated. The results showed that KMnO4 accelerated the migration and transformation of Mn2+ and NH4 +-N. Mn2+ was mainly converted to the new ecologically hydrated MnO2 (NEHMO), which adsorbed Mn2+ and then oxidized it to form new active manganese oxides, thus constructing an autocatalytic oxidation reaction system of manganese (Mn2+-MnO2-Mn2+). A part of NH4 +-N adsorbed on the NEHMO surface was catalytically oxidized to NO3 –-N and NO2 –-N. Mn2+on the EMR surface of the KMnO4 system mainly existed in the form of Mn3+, and the manganese oxides formed by the autocatalytic oxidaton of manganese mainly existed in the EMR system in the Fe-Mn oxidation state and residue state. This study provides theoretical support for developing in-situ remediation technology for EMR in residue sites.

Abstract:Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) has been an effective technology for the in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) of many organic compounds including chlorinated alkanes and alkenes, but it has rarely been applied for oxidizing aromatic organochlorines. This study confirms the ability of permanganate to oxidize an aromatic chlorinated compound, pentachlorophenol (PCP), in an efficient manner at neutral pH. The rate of the reaction between KMnO4 and PCP was calculated and the results indicated that the reaction between PCP and permanganate is relatively fast with a second-order rate constant k″ ∼ 30 M-1 s-1. Besides the kinetic aspect, the authors identified the main reaction by-products, and proposed a possible reaction mechanism scheme. The general pathway shows the formation of chlorinated intermediates, and ultimately, the complete mineralization to chloride, water, and CO2 confirmed by total organic carbon and chloride measurement in solution. Flow-through column experiments, consisting of flushing a PCP-contaminated sandy or natural soil with oxidant, showed the good ability of permanganate to eliminate the pollutant. After 24 h of treatment, 77% and 56% of PCP abatement were obtained for sandy and natural soil, respectively. These findings show the high potential of permanganate for the in situ remediation of aromatic organochlorine contaminated soils.

Abstract:Little attention has been paid to the in situ-generated biogenic manganese oxides (BMnOx) for practical implementation in continuous groundwater remediation systems. The enrichment effects of manganese oxidizing bacteria (MOB) in bioaugmentation columns and the in situ-generated BMnOx for continuous thallium(I) (Tl(I)) removal from groundwater were investigated. Results indicated that Pseudomonas Putida MnB1 (strain MnB1) attached on the groundwater sediments (GS) can achieve a maximum of 97.37 % Mn(II) oxidation and generate 29.6 mg/L BMnOx, which was superior than that of traditional quartz sand (QS). The in situ-generated BMnOx in MOB_GS column effectively removed 10–100 μg/L Tl(I) under the interference of high concentrations of Fe(II) and Mn(II) in groundwater. Distinctive microbial enrichment effects occurred in the bioaugmentation columns under the competition of indigenous microbes in groundwater. The release of Mn(II) from the BMnOx inhibited with the decrease in Tl(I) removal efficiency. XAFS analysis revealed Tl(I) was effectively adsorbed by BMnOx and Mn-O octahedra with Tl-O tetrahedral coordination existed in BMnOx. This study provides an in-depth understanding of the in situ-generated BMnOx for the Tl(I) removal and contributes to the application of BMnOx in groundwater remediation.

Characteristics and mechanisms of controlled-release KMnO4 for groundwater remediation: Experimental and modeling investigations

Abstract:Controlled release materials (CRMs) are emerging oxidant delivery techniques for in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) for groundwater remediation. Successful implementation of CRM relies on good understandings of the kinetics and mechanism of controlled release of reactive agents. In this study, batch experiments and model simulations were conducted to explore the impacts of CRM properties (composition and size) and environmental conditions (temperature, pH, water volume and anions) on KMnO4 release from KMnO4 -paraffin controlled release beads. Experimental results indicated that higher KMnO4: paraffin mass ratio resulted in shorter release longevities and higher release rate. Larger bead resulted in lower release rate, longer release longevity, and more KMnO4 released. Higher incubation temperature resulted in higher release rate and shorter release longevity, but did not affect the total mass of KMnO4 released. Acidic pH decreased the total mass of KMnO4 released while alkaline pH did not affect KMnO4 release. The presence of SO42-, CO32-, Cl- and Br- had negligible impacts on KMnO4 release. A dissolution-diffusion conceptual model was developed. The above experimental observation and the associated controlled release mechanisms can be qualitatively explained by the conceptual model. A more detailed two-film boundary mathematical model was developed to simulate KMnO4 release process. Comparison of modeling results with experimental data suggest that the new mathematical model gave a good quantitatively predication. Overall, this study shows that properly designed CRM can sustain release for years, thus representing a cost-effective and low-maintenance groundwater remediation technology. Both CRM properties and environmental conditions significantly affect the release kinetics and longevity, therefore these factors should be considered in the design and maintenance of CRM-based ISCO system.
Low Permeability Zone Remediation of Trichloroethene Via Coupling Electrokinetic Migration with in Situ Electrochemical Hydrodechlorination.

Abstract:To address the challenge of trichloroethene (TCE) remediation in low permeability zone, an inexpensive Cu-Ni bimetallic cathode was proposed in electrokinetic (EK) remediation system to couple electrokinetic migration with in situ electrochemical hydrodechlorination. Aqueous phase TCE was originally added into the anolyte so that breakthrough curves through the low permeability porous soil compartment could be obtained to better understand TCE migration driven by electroosmosis flow using different cathodes. The Cu-Ni cathode resulted in more TCE migration of 7.64 mg compared to that of 5.99 mg with Ni and 4.22 mg with mixed metal oxide (MMO) cathode, suggesting that the Cu-Ni cathode was capable of driving more TCE flux out of the contaminated soil. With the Cu-Ni cathode, 98.4% of TCE flux that reached the cathode was electrochemically reduced on the cathode, which was much higher than that with MMO cathode (77.9%) or Ni cathode (59.6%). TCE mass that was transported by electroosmosis flow increased from 2.04 to 6.68 mg when the voltage gradient increased from 1 to 4 V cm(-1), with the normalized energy consumption increasing from 0.06 to 0.16 kWh kg(-1 )per unit water movement, and from 0.54 to 2.55 kWh g(-1) per unit TCE transport. For TCE that did reach the cathode compartment, > 98% degradation maintained at the Cu-Ni cathode with various voltage gradients. The coupled electrokinetic and electrochemical hydrodechlorination technology appears to be a promising strategy for the remediation of low permeability porous media. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Achieving sustainable trichloroethylene removal from nitrate-containing groundwater: Effects of particle size and dosage of microscale zero-valent iron on its synergistic action with anaerobic bacteria

Abstract:The coupling of microscale zero-valent iron (mZVI) and anaerobic bacteria (AB) has gained increasing attention due to its ability to enhance dechlorination efficiency by combining the advantages of chemical and microbial reduction. However, the implementation of these coupling technologies at the field scale is challenging in terms of sustainability goals due to the coexistence of various natural electron acceptors in groundwater, which leads to limited electron selectivity and increased secondary risk. Therefore, this study used trichloroethylene (TCE) as a probe contaminant and nitrate (NO3-) as a typical co-occurring natural electron acceptor to optimize the overall sustainable remediation performance of an mZVI/AB coupled system by adjusting the mZVI particle size and dosage. Results revealed that mZVI particles of different sizes exhibit different microorganism activation capabilities. In contrast to its 2 μm and 7 μm counterparts, the 30 μm mZVI/AB system demonstrated a strong dosage-dependency in TCE removal and its product selectivity. Finally, multi-criteria analysis (MCA) methods were established to comprehensively rank the alternatives, and 30 μm mZVI (15 g/L dosage) was determined to be the best remediation strategy with the highest total sustainability score under all studied hydro-chemical conditions when equal weights were applied to technical, environmental, and economic indicators. Our work provides a paradigm for comprehensively assessing the sustainable remediation performance of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons polluted groundwater in practical applications.

Abstract:In Nigeria, potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is used as a chemical oxidant in the removal of hydrocarbons from polluted soils and groundwater, but there is no information on the effects of KMnO4 on the geotechnical properties of the soil. In this study, KMnO4 was added separately to lateritic soil and kaolin at concentrations of 0 %, 2 %, 5% and 10 % by weight of dry soil. Each of the mixes was then subjected to grain size analysis, Atterberg limits, specific gravity, compaction, and California bearing ratio (CBR) tests. The results showed that an increase in KMnO4 from 0 % to 10 % generally decreased the values of maximum dry density (MDD), optimum moisture content (OMC) and both unsoaked and soaked CBR for both soils. In conclusion, the study shows that although KMnO4 is excellent for the remediation of contaminated sites, it reduces the geotechnical properties of soil and therefore should not be used alone (without the use of other additives) for soil stabilisation.
