Abstract:Due to differences in chemical properties and half-lives, best practices for exposure assessment may differ for legacy versus novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Our objective was to identify the environment matrix that best predicted biomarkers of children's BFR exposures. Paired samples were collected from children aged 3–6 years and their homes, including dust, a small piece of polyurethane foam from the furniture, and a handwipe and wristband from each child. Biological samples collected included serum, which was analyzed for 11 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and urine, which was analyzed for tetrabromobenzoic acid (TBBA), a metabolite of 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate (EH-TBB). Significant positive correlations were typically observed between BFRs measured in dust, handwipes and wristbands, though wristbands and handwipes tended to be more strongly correlated with one another than with dust. PBDEs, EH-TBB and BEH-TEBP were detected in 30% of the sofa foam samples, suggesting that the foam was treated with PentaBDE or Firemaster® 550/600 (FM 550/600). PBDEs were detected in all serum samples and TBBA was detected in 43% of urine samples. Statistically significant positive correlations were observed between the environmental samples and serum for PBDEs. Urinary TBBA was 6.86 and 6.58 times more likely to be detected among children in the highest tertile of EH-TBB exposure for handwipes and wristbands, respectively (95 % CI: 2.61, 18.06 and 1.43, 30.05 with p < 0.001 and 0.02, respectively). The presence of either PentaBDE or FM 550/600 in furniture was also associated with significantly higher levels of these chemicals in dust, handwipes and serum (for PBDEs) and more frequent detection of TBBA in urine (p = 0.13). Our results suggest that children are exposed to a range of BFRs in the home, some of which likely originate from residential furniture, and that silicone wristbands are a practical tool for evaluating external exposure to both legacy and novel BFRs.

Abstract:Silicone wristbands are a noninvasive personal exposure assessment tool. However, despite their utility, questions remain about the rate at which chemicals accumulate on wristbands when worn, as validation studies utilizing wristbands worn by human participants are limited. This study evaluated the chemical uptake rates of 113 organic pollutants from several chemical classes (i.e., polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), organophosphate esters (OPEs), alkyl OPEs, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), brominated flame retardants (BFR), phthalates, pesticides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) over a five-day period. Adult participants (n = 10) were asked to wear five silicone wristbands and then remove one wristband each day. Several compounds were detected in all participants' wristbands after only one day. The number of chemicals detected frequently (i.e. in at least seven participants wristbands) increased from 20% of target compounds to 26% after three days and more substantially increased to 34% of target compounds after four days of wear. Chemicals detected in at least seven participants' day five wristbands (n = 24 chemicals) underwent further statistical analysis, including estimating the chemical uptake rates over time. Some chemicals, including pesticides and phthalates, had postive and significant correlations between concentrations on wristbands worn five days and concentrations of wristbands worn fewer days suggesting chronic exposure. For 23 of the 24 compounds evaluated there was a statistically significant and positive linear association between the length of time wristbands were worn and chemical concentrations in wristbands. Despite the differences that exist between laboratory studies using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) environmental samplers and worn wristbands, these results indicate that worn wristbands are primarily acting as first-order kinetic samplers. These results suggest that studies using different deployment lengths should be comparable when results are normalized to the length of the deployment period. In addition, a shorter deployment period could be utilized for compounds that were commonly detected in as little as one day.

Abstract:Silicone wristbands were utilized as personal passive samplers in a sub-cohort of 92 women, who participated in New York University Children's Health and Environment Study, to assess exposure to semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs). Wristbands were analyzed for 77 SVOCs, including halogenated and non-halogenated organophosphate esters (OPEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides, phthalates, and brominated flame retardants (BFRs) (e.g. polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)). This study aimed to look for patterns in chemical exposure utilizing participant demographics gathered from a questionnaire, and chemical exposure data across multiple timepoints during pregnancy. Analysis focused on 27 compounds detected in at least 80% of the wristbands examined. The chemicals detected most frequently included two pesticides, eight phthalates, one phthalate alternative, seven BFRs, and nine OPEs, including isopropylated and tert-butylated triarylphosphate esters (ITPs and TBPPs). Co-exposure to different SVOCs was most prominent in compounds that were within the same chemical class or were used in similar consumer applications such as phthalates and OPEs, which are often used as plasticizers. Pre-pregnancy BMI was positively associated with multiple compounds, and there were both positive and negative associations between women's parity and SVOC exposure. Outdoor temperature was not correlated with the wristband concentrations over a five-day sampling period. Lastly, significant and moderately high Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) (0.66-0.84) values for phthalate measurementsacross pregnancy indicate chronic exposure and suggest that using wristbands during one sampling period may reliably predict exposure. However, multiple sampling periods may be necessary to accurately determine indoor exposure to other SVOCs including OPEs and BFRs.
Monitoring Human Exposure to Organophosphate Esters: Comparing Silicone Wristbands with Spot Urine Samples as Predictors of Internal Dose

Abstract:Silicone wristbands present a noninvasive exposure assessment tool and an alternative to traditional biomonitoring; however, questions about their utility remain as validation studies are limited. We sought to determine if wristbands provide quantitative estimates of internal organophosphate ester (OPE) exposure. We evaluated internal dose by measuring metabolite masses excreted in 24-hour urine samples collected over five days among ten adults. We compared internal dose to OPE concentrations in paired wristbands worn during collection and, as a comparison, evaluated metabolite levels in spot urine samples. Three of six OPE metabolites evaluated were detected in >98% of urine samples, and 24 of 34 assessed OPEs were detected in at least one wristband. OPE uptake in wristbands was linear over time (range=0.54-61.8 ng/g/day). OPE concentrations in spot urine and wristbands were not correlated with total diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) excreted in urine, which may be due to the range of possible DPHP parent compounds or dietary exposure. However, for tris-(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TDCIPP) and tris-(2-chloroisopropyl)phosphate (TCIPP), wristbands and spot urine samples were both moderately to strongly correlated with internal dose (all rs>0.56 and p<0.1), suggesting both perform well as integrated exposure estimates. Given the potential advantages of silicone wristbands, further studies investigating additional compounds are warranted.

Abstract:A novel approach to assess exposure to synthetic pyrethroids includes the use of silicone wristbands (WBs). In this pilot study completed on ( n = 24) volunteers, comprising a week-long sampling period, paired urine samples (metabolites), and WBs (native compounds) were analyzed. This study employed a newly developed method for the determination of six pyrethroids in WBs. Permethrin was the most frequently detected compound (58.3%) in WBs and its geometric mean concentration was 79.64 ng/g. The most frequently detected metabolite in urine was 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3-PBA) (68.06%). The geometric mean concentrations of urinary pyrethroid biomarkers varied from 0.21 ng/mL for 3-PBA to 0.08 ng/mL for cis -3-(2,2-dibromovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane carboxylic acid (DBCA). Higher concentrations of urinary metabolites (3-PBA, DBCA, cis -DCCA, and trans -DCCA) and permethrin in WBs were detected in study participants who reported pest control in occupied buildings within the last 5 years. The concentrations of 3-PBA, ci s-DCCA, trans -DCCA, and permethrin were greater among people using insecticides in their homes. Both the ownership of pets and the use of antiparasitic veterinary drugs also resulted in significantly higher concentrations of metabolites in urine and permethrin in WBs. Silicone wristbands turned out to be a promising tool that may supplement qualitative and quantitative assessment of external exposure and the detection of key sources of pyrethroids in a minimally invasive way. Although our study is only a pilot one with a small number of participants, both urine analysis and wristbands independently allowed for the identification of the same exposure predictors, thereby documenting a certain potential for the practical application of WBs in exposure assessment.

Abstract:High production volume chemicals (HPVCs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are semi-volatile organic compounds (semi-VOCs) of great environmental concern because of their presence worldwide and health problems resulting from long-term exposure to some of them. It is essential to have robust analytical methods to monitor the concentrations of these compounds not only in environmental samples but also individual exposure. In this pilot study we develop and validate a multiresidue analytical method based on ultrasound-assisted extraction and gas-chromatography mass spectrometry for the simultaneous determination of 56 semi-VOCs using silicone wristbands (SWBs) as personal passive samplers. The developed method provided recoveries between 43% and 114% on sampled SWBs and method detection and quantification limits in the range of 0.1-35 ng/g and 0.3-119 ng/g, respectively. A preliminary study was performed with a small group of adults living in the industrial city of Tarragona (north-eastern Spain) to evaluate the applicability of SWBs for monitoring individual exposure to the studied HPVCs and PAHs. Benzothiazoles, benzenesulfonamides, UV stabilisers and phenolic antioxidants were determined for the first time in SWBs. Phthalates (PAEs), stood out above the rest, accounting for 52% of the total concentrations. Diethylhexyl phthalate was the compound found at the highest concentrations with values between 1.1 and 82 μg/g. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic dermal risk assessment was performed for adults and considering two scenarios (low and high). PAHs were the compounds with the highest carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic dermal risk regardless of the exposure scenario. The second family of compounds that contributed the most to the total risk were PAEs but high punctual concentrations of these compounds caused significant differences between exposure scenarios.
Associations of environmental chemical exposures measured in personal silicone wristbands with sociodemographic factors, COVID-19 restrictions, and child respiratory health

Abstract:Background: Although human biomonitoring of environmental chemicals has been considered a gold standard, these methods can be costly, burdensome, and prone to unwanted sources of variability that may cause confounding. Silicone wristbands have recently emerged as innovative passive samplers for measuring personal exposures. Methods: In a pilot study from 2019 to 2021 involving 55 children aged 5-9 years in Seattle and Yakima, Washington, we utilized silicone wristbands to explore associations of sociodemographic variables and COVID-19-related restrictions, including school closures, with exposures to numerous chemicals including brominated and organophosphate ester (OPE) flame retardants, polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalates, and pesticides. We additionally conducted the first analysis testing silicone wristband chemicals as predictors of child wheeze, individually and in mixtures via logistic weighted quantile sum regression (WQS). Results: Among 109 semi-volatile organic compounds measured, we detected 40 in >60% of wristbands worn by children continuously for an average of 5 days. Chemicals were generally positively correlated, especially within the same class. Male sex and increasing age were linked with higher exposures across several chemical classes; Hispanic/Latino ethnicity was linked with higher exposures to some phthalates and OPEs. COVID-19 restrictions were associated with lower wristband concentrations of brominated and triaryl OPE flame retardants. Each one-decile higher WQS exposure index was suggestively associated with 2.11-fold [95% CI: 0.93-4.80] higher odds of child wheeze. Risk of child wheeze was higher per 10-fold increase in the PAH chrysene (RR = 1.93[1.07-3.49]), the pesticide cis-permethrin (3.31[1.23-8.91]), and di-isononyl phthalate (DINP) (5.40[1.22-24.0]) CONCLUSIONS: Our identification of demographic factors including sex, age, and ethnicity associated with chemical exposures may aid efforts to mitigate exposure disparities. Lower exposures to flame retardants during pandemic restrictions corroborates prior evidence of higher levels of these chemicals in school versus home environments. Future research in larger cohorts is needed to validate these findings.

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are brominated flame retardants (BFRs). The ubiquity and persistence of PBDEs in sediment have raised concerns over their environmental fate and ecological risks. Due to strong affinity for sediment organic matter, environmental fate and bioavailability of PBDEs closely depend on their phase distribution. In this study, disposable polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fiber was used to derive the freely dissolved concentration (Cfree) of PBDEs in sediment porewater as a measurement of bioavailability. The PDMS-to-water partition coefficient (log KPDMS) was 5.46–5.83 for BDE 47, 99, and 153. In sediments, PBDEs were predominantly sorbed to the sediment phase, with Cfree accounting for <0.012% of the total chemical mass. The Cfree of PBDEs decreased as their bromination or sediment organic carbon content increased. The strong association with dissolved organic matter (DOM) implies a potential for facilitated offsite transport and dispersion in the environment that depends closely on the stability of sediment aggregates.

Abstract:Humans are exposed to numerous potentially harmful chemicals throughout their lifetime. Although many studies have addressed this issue, the data on chronic exposure is still lacking. Hence, there is a growing interest in methods and tools allowing to longitudinally track personal exposure to multiple chemicals via different routes. Since the seminal work, silicone wristbands (WBs) have been increasingly used to facilitate human exposure assessment, as using WBs as a wearable sampler offers new insights into measuring chemical risks involved in many ambient and occupational scenarios. However, the literature lacks a detailed overview regarding methodologies being used; a comprehensive comparison with other approaches of personal exposure assessment is needed as well. Therefore, the aim of this review is fourfold. First, we summarize hitherto conducted research that employed silicone WBs as personal passive samplers. Second, all pre-analytical and analytical steps used to obtain exposure data are discussed. Third, we compare main characteristics of WBs with key features of selected matrices used in exposure assessment, namely urine, blood, hand wipes, active air sampling, and settled dust. Finally, we discuss future needs of research employing silicone WBs. Our work shows a variety of possibilities, advantages, and caveats associated with employment of silicone WBs as personal passive samplers. Although further research is necessary, silicone WBs have already been proven valuable as a tool for longitudinal assessment of personal exposure.

Abstract:Public health is increasingly emphasizing policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) change as a key strategy for population-level health promotion and disease prevention. When applied to childhood obesity, this strategy typically involves school systems, since children spend large portions of their days in school and are heavily influenced by this environment. While most school systems have implemented nutrition education and physical activity programs for some time, their understanding and use of PSE approaches to obesity prevention is accelerating based on several large federally funded initiatives. As part of one initiative's evaluation, key informant interviews reveal the specific obesity prevention PSE strategies schools are attempting and the corresponding barriers and facilitators to their implementation. These evaluation findings raise several fundamental issues regarding school-based obesity prevention, including the potential role of school personnel, the influence of grant funding on school health initiatives, and the fit between public health and educational priorities.
Human Biomonitoring of Serum Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers by Supported Liquid Extraction and Gas Chromatography Coupled With Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:This study aims to develop and validate a robust analytical method for the quantification of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in human serum using gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. We compared procedural blanks, recoveries, and operational convenience of liquid–liquid extraction and supported liquid extraction for the determination of serum PBDEs. We evaluated different extraction solvents for their effect on PBDE recoveries. Supported liquid extraction was selected for method validation due to its operational convenience. The method demonstrated satisfactory linearity, sensitivity, and reproducibility, with the range of 0.10–5.00 μg/L for most PBDE congeners and 0.20–10.0 μg/L for PBDE‐154 and PBDE‐183, with limits of detection ranging from 2 to 48 ng/L, and with matrix effects ranging from 94% to 113%. Quality control assessments indicated that recoveries ranged from 85% to 110% and relative standard deviations of less than 11%. The proposed method was applied to biomonitoring of 111 healthy adults, revealing detectable levels of PBDEs in over 90% of the samples. BDE‐47 and BDE‐183 were the most prevalent, with mean concentrations of 4.13 and 22.1 ng/L, respectively. Detection frequencies ranged from 0.90% for BDE‐17 and BDE‐85 to 25.2% for BDE‐47. Males had higher mean concentrations of BDE‐183 than females.

Abstract:Silicone (polydimethylsiloxane or PDMS) wristbands and cotton T-shirts were used to assess the exposure of e-waste recyclers in Dhaka, Bangladesh to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), dechlorane plus (DPs), and organophosphate esters (OPEs). The median surface-normalized uptake rates of PBDEs, NBFRs, DPs, and OPEs were 170, 8.5, 4.8, and 270 ng/dm2/h for wristbands and 5.4, 2.0, 0.94, and 23 ng/dm2/h for T-shirts, respectively. Concentrations of Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), Tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP), Tri-m-cresyl phosphate (TmCP), Bis(2-ethlyhexyl) tetrabromophthalate (BEH-TEBP), and Dechlorane plus (DPs) in wristbands were significantly correlated with those in T-shirts. Wristbands accumulated ~7 times more mass than T-shirts, especially of compounds expected to be mainly in the gas phase. We introduce the silicone "sandwich" method to approximate the easily releasable fraction (ERF) from T-shirts, hypothesized to be related to dermal exposure. ERFs varied from 6 to 75% of total chemical accumulated by T-shirts and were significantly negatively correlated with compounds' octanol-air partition coefficient (log Koa). The median daily exposure doses via dermal transfer from the front of the T-shirt to the front body trunk were 0.32, 0.13, 0.11, and 9.1 ng/kg-BW/day for PBDEs, NBFRs, DPs, and OPEs, respectively. The evidence of e-waste recycler exposure to flame retardants in this low income country, lacking protective personal equipment, calls for measures to minimize their exposure and for chemical management regulations to consider exposures to chemicals in waste products.

The analytes include three types of commercial BFRs, tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) isomers, and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and dominant hydroxylated BDE (OH-PBDE) and methoxylated BDE (MeO-PBDE) metabolites of PBDEs. The sample eluents were sequentially analyzed for PBDEs and MeO-BDEs on online gel permeation chromatography/gas chromatography-electron capture-negative ionization mass spectrometry (online GPC GC-ECNI-MS) and for TBBPA, HBCD, and OH-BDEs on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Method recoveries were 67–134% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 20%. Method detection limits (MDLs) were 0.30–4.20 pg/mL fresh weight (f.w.) for all analytes, except for BDE-209 of 16 pg/mL f.w. The methodology was also applied in a pilot study, which analyzed ten real samples from healthy donors in China, and the majority of target analytes were detected with a detection rate of more than 80%. To our knowledge, it is the first time for us in effectively determining BFRs of most types in one aliquot of human serum samples. This new analytical method is more specific, sensitive, accurate, and time saving for routine biomonitoring of these BFRs and for integrated assessment of health risk of BFR exposure.
Occurrence of Legacy and Emerging Organophosphate Flame Retardants (opfrs) on Silicone Wristbands: Comparison Within Couples.

Abstract:Novel organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) are recently identified and highly detected in indoor dusts, but their personal exposure was not clear. Here, wristband was used to estimate non-dietary exposure to emerging OPFRs in comparison with legacy OPFRs in 93 adults in Beijing, China. Comparison of studies in wristband monitoring data showed a clear difference in profiles of legacy OPFRs between China and United States, where tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) was usually the dominant OPFR in the United States, but triphenyl phosphate has the highest contribution to total OPFRs in China. Five emerging OPFRs, including diethylene glycol bis(bis(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate) (DEGBBCPP) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phenyl phosphate (BEHPP), were detected in above 45 % of wristbands. The median concentration of DEGBBCPP (2.2 ng/g) was about three times higher than TDCIPP (0.76 ng/g), a legacy chloro-OPFR. Both emerging and legacy OPFRs were significantly correlated within 40 pairs of couples, suggesting major exposure in their homes. Wristbands from husbands had significantly higher tris(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (TBOEP) and DEGBBCPP, while 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) was significantly higher in wives' bands, suggesting gender-related exposure sources for these OPFRs.

Abstract:A method for the determination of 14 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in human serum using isotope internal standard-gas chromatography-high resolution dual-focus magnetic mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) was developed. After thawed to room temperature, 0.5 mL serum samples were mixed with 13C-labeled isotopic internal standard. Subsequently, methanol was added to precipitate the proteins in the samples. The effects of three kinds of acids on the removal of cellulite from the serum samples and the corresponding recoveries were compared, and the results revealed that sulfuric acid was the most optimal. The target compounds were extracted by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), and the effects of different extraction solvents on recoveries were compared. The results indicated that n-hexane (6 mL)-methyl tert-butyl ether (6 mL) was the best extraction solvent. The extracts were cleaned and eluted using solid phase extraction cartridges. Furthermore, the factors that influenced the cleanup effects and recoveries, including the solid phase extraction columns and elution solvents, were investigated in detail. The results indicated that the optimal conditions were cleanup with a silica gel column and elution with hexane-dichloromethane (1∶1, v/v). The eluate was re-dissolved in hexane after being blown to near dryness using nitrogen. The detection of PBDEs was performed using GC-HRMS. The instrument conditions were optimized, and the capillary column used was an Rtx-1614 column (30 m×0.25 mm×0.1 μm). Helium was used as the carrier gas at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The injector temperature was 290 ℃, and the oven temperature was programmed as follows: 150 ℃ for 2 min, 150 ℃ to 250 ℃ at 15 ℃/min, held for 1 min, 250 ℃ to 290 ℃ at 25 ℃/min, held for 3 min, and 290 ℃ to 320 ℃ at 25 ℃/min, held for 12.5 min. The injection volume was 1 μL in splitless mode. The samples were ionized in the positive electron ionization (EI) mode at 35 eV. Precursor ions and the production of each compound were identified using a voltage-selective ion detection (VSIR) program with a resolution of 10000. The ionization temperature was set at 280 ℃, and the transmission line temperature was set at 320 ℃. To ensure the integrity of the separation of low-brominated components, the column separation time was shortened, the response of high-boiling components was improved (BDE-190 and BDE-209), the decomposition of BDE-209 on the chromatographic column was effectively prevented, and the requirement of the simultaneous determination of multiple PBDEs was met. The method demonstrated good linearity in the range of 0.40 to 25 μg/L for BDE-209, and 0.08 to 5 μg/L for the other 13 PBDEs, with correlation coefficients greater than 0.995. The method detection limits (MDLs) were in the range of 0.01 to 0.51 μg/L, and the limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.04 to 1.70 μg/L. The recoveries of the 14 compounds ranged from 75.5% to 120.7%. The intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) were within 3.8%-10.9% (n=6) and the inter-day RSDs were within 4.2% to 12.4% (n=6). This method was successfully applied to the determination of 14 PBDEs in 15 serum samples from an adolescent population in an area. Notably, 1.86 to 4.66 ng/g lipid BDE-47 was detected in the serum samples with a detection frequency of 100%, and the other compounds were not detected. The results imply that the adolescent population in this region was exposed to some PBDE. Compared with the existing methods reported, this method has less sample demand and higher sensitivity and accuracy, can simultaneously determine 14 PBDEs, including BDE-209 in human serum, and effectively improve the efficiency of detection. This study offers a new method for studying the impact of polybrominated diphenyl ethers on population health in China.
Characterizing firefighter's exposure to over 130 SVOCs using silicone wristbands: A pilot study comparing on-duty and off-duty exposures

Abstract:Firefighters are occupationally exposed to an array of hazardous chemicals, and these exposures have been linked to the higher rates of some cancer in firefighters. However, additional research that characterizes firefighters' exposure is needed to fully elucidate the impacts on health risks. In this pilot study, we used silicone wristbands to quantify off-duty and on-duty chemical exposures experienced by 20 firefighters in Durham, North Carolina. By using each firefighter's off-duty wristband to represent individual baseline exposures, we assessed occupation-related exposures (i.e. on-duty exposures). We also investigated the influence of responding to a fire event while on-duty. In total, 134 chemicals were quantified using both GC-MS and LC-MS/MS targeted methods. Seventy-one chemicals were detected in at least 50% of all silicone wristbands, including 7 PFAS, which to our knowledge, have not been reported in wristbands previously. Of these, phthalates were generally measured at the highest concentrations, followed by brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and organophosphate esters (OPEs). PFAS were measured at lower concentrations overall, but firefighter PFOS exposures while on-duty and responding to fires were 2.5 times higher than off-duty exposures. Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), BFRs, and some OPEs were occupationally associated, with firefighters experiencing 0.5 to 8.5 times higher exposure while on-duty as compared to off-duty. PAH exposures were also higher for firefighters who respond to a fire than those who did not while on-duty. Additional research with a larger population of firefighters that builds upon this pilot investigation may further pinpoint exposure sources that may contribute to firefighters' risk for cancer, such as those from firefighter gear or directly from fires. This research demonstrates the utility of using silicone wristbands to quantify occupational exposure in firefighters and the ability to disentangle exposures that may be specific to fire events as opposed to other sources that firefighters might experience.
Serum polybrominated diphenyl ether exposure and influence factors in blood donors of Wuxi adults from 2013 to 2016

Abstract:Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used as brominated flame retardants worldwide and are correlated with extensive environmental pollution and human health concerns. This study is aimed at analyzing the concentrations of PBDEs and at evaluating their temporal trends among a population of blood donors ( n = 33) over a 4-year period. A total of 132 serum samples were used for PBDE detection. Nine PBDE congeners were quantified in serum samples by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The median concentrations of Σ 9 PBDEs in each year were 33.46, 29.75, 30.85, and 35.02 ng/g lipid, respectively. Most of the PBDE congeners showed a downward trend from 2013 to 2014 and then increased after 2014. No correlations between age and PBDE congener concentrations were observed, while concentrations of each congener and Σ 9 PBDE were nearly always lower in females than in males, especially in BDE-66, BDE-153, BDE-183, BDE-190, and Σ 9 PBDE. We also found that the intake of fish, fruit, and eggs in the daily diet was related to the exposure level of PBDEs. Our results suggest that, as deca-BDE is still produced and used in China, diet is an important exposure pathway for PBDEs, and follow-up studies will be required to improve our understanding of the behaviors of PBDE isomers in humans and the exposure levels.
