Abstract:PurposeThis review aimed to assess whether peroneus longus tendon (PLT) autograft would have comparable functional outcomes and graft survival rates when compared to hamstring tendon (HT) autograft for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.MethodsPubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Ovid (MEDICINE), and EMBASE databases were queried for original articles from clinical studies including the keywords: ACL reconstruction and PLT autograft. Studies comparing PLT autograft versus HT autograft were included in this analysis and the following data were extracted from studies meeting the inclusion criteria: graft diameter, functional outcomes (Tegner activity scale, Lysholm score, and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score), knee laxity (Lachman test), and complications (donor site pain or paresthesia, graft failure). Besides, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) scale and the Foot and Ankle Disability Index (FADI) pre-operation and at last follow-up were also compared among patients using PLT autograft. Meta-analysis was applied using Review Manager 5.3 and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.ResultsTwenty-three studies including 925 patients with ACL reconstruction met inclusion criteria. Of these, 5 studies included a direct comparison of PLT autograft (164 patients) versus HT autograft (174 patients). No significant difference was observed between PLT and HT autografts for Tegner activity scale, Lachman test, donor site pain, or graft failure. However, PLT groups demonstrated better Lysholm score (mean difference between PLT and HT groups, 1.55; 95% CI 0.20–2.89; p = 0.02) and IKDC subjective score (mean difference between PLT and HT groups, 3.24; 95% CI 0.29–6.19; p = 0.03). No difference of FADI was found (n.s.) but AOFAS was slightly decreased at last post-operative follow-up for patients with PLT autograft compared with pre-operative scores (mean difference of 0.31, 95% CI 0.07–0.54, p = 0.01).ConclusionPLT autograft demonstrated comparable functional outcomes and graft survival rates compared with HT autograft for ACL reconstruction. However, a slight decrease in AOFAS score should be considered during surgical planning. Hence, the PLT is a suitable autograft harvested outside the knee for ACL reconstruction to avoid the complication of quadriceps-hamstring imbalance which can occur when harvesting autografts from the knee.Level of evidenceLevel II.

Abstract:Introduction: Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury hampers the rotational stability and stability front to back of the knee joint, seriously affecting the quality of life of patients. Some studies have reported that the peroneus longus tendon (PLT) has sufficient length and strength.Hypothesis: We hypothesized that the PLT can be used as a novel appropriate material for PCL recon-struction therapy. Materials and methods: Herein, we systematically analysed the clinical effect of the double-stranded PLT and the four-stranded hamstring tendon in the reconstruction of the PCL and com-pared the effectiveness and safety of these two surgical approaches in the reconstruction of PCL injury. A total of 48 patients with complete rupture of the PCL were divided into Group A (reconstructed with the double-stranded PLT, 25 cases) and Group B (reconstructed with the four-stranded hamstring tendon, 23 cases).Results: The patients were followed up for more than 1 year. The intraoperative time for tendon extraction was significantly shorter in Group A than Group B. Twenty-four months after operation, patients in the two groups showed the alleviated tibial posterior displacement and the increased IKDC score, Lysholm score and Tegner score. Nevertheless, these scores showed no significant differences between the two groups. Additionally, compared with the therapy using the four-stranded hamstring tendon, therapy using the double-stranded PLT is simpler and safer.Discussion: Both surgical methods are effective in the treatment of PCL injury. The PLT could be a good choice for PCL injury reconstruction material, especially when the four-stranded hamstring tendon is accidentally damaged or ineffective. Abstract:PurposePeroneus longus tendon (PLT) autograft has been successfully used for isolated anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction cases. Being a powerful evertor and flexor of great toe, there might be associated ankle morbidity with this autograft option. However, there are only a few studies exploring whether the ankle morbidity is significant or not. This study aims to assess the functional outcomes, donor site morbidity, and ankle strength after harvesting ipsilateral peroneus longus autograft for ACL reconstruction in revision ACL and multi-ligament injury cases.MethodsThis was a prospective case series. All of the patients were evaluated by clinical examination for knee for laxity, ankle joint stability, and using visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score, and Lysholm score, preoperatively and postoperatively at two-year follow-up. Morbidity of donor ankle was assessed using American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, bilateral evertors, and first ray plantarflexion strength measurement using an isometer (Innovative Design Orthopedics) at two-year follow-up.ResultsIpsilateral PLT graft was used in ten patients of revision ACL reconstruction and 27 patients of the multi-ligament knee injury. The mean length of PLT harvested (cm) was 26.2 (standard deviation 2.6, range 22–31), and mean diameter of the doubled graft (mm) was 7.9 (standard deviation 0.68, range 7.5–8.5). There was a significant improvement in VAS score for pain, Lysholm, and IKDC scores (p = < 0.001) at two -year follow-up. There were no cases of graft failure, superficial, or deep infection. Ankle dorsiflexion(p = 0.32), ankle plantarflexion (p = 0.19), eversion strength(p = 0.6), first ray plantarflexion strength(p = 0.52), and AOFAS score(p = 0.29) were found to be comparable to the normal side in all patients.ConclusionsPeroneus longus autograft can be considered as a potential autograft option for ACL reconstruction in multi-ligament knee injuries and revision ACL reconstruction. No significant donor site morbidity was noted at follow-up.Level of evidenceLevel IV.

Abstract:Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with peroneus longus tendon can achieve satisfactory knee joint function, but it has an impact on the inversion and eversion of the donor ankle joint, which requires postoperative functional exercise. Objective Peroneus Longus Tendon (PLT), a viable anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft, shares similar biomechanics, making it suitable for reconstruction. Controversy exists over whether PLT transplants affects the donor ankle joint. The purpose of this study was to examine the recovery of knee joint function following arthroscopic ACL restoration using autologous PLT and its influence on the donor ankle joint. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted on 65 patients with ACL rupture who underwent PLT graft reconstruction in our hospital from January 2016 to December 2021. A three‐dimensional gait analysis of the bilateral knee and ankle joints was performed postoperatively using an Opti_Knee three‐dimensional motion measurement and analysis system—Yidong Medical Infrared Motion Gait Analyzer. Knee function scores and changes in the range of motion of the bilateral knee and ankle joints were collected. The analysis of preoperative and postoperative joint function scores, bilateral knee and ankle mobility was performed by t‐tests. Results One year after surgery, the patients' International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) scores, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOSs), and Lysholm scores were significantly improved compared to preoperative scores, with statistically significant differences (p 0.05). Is Peroneus Longus Allograft Good Alternative for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction: a Comparison Study

Abstract:PURPOSE OF THE STUDY To compare the early clinical results of patients who had anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction with peroneus longus allograft versus hamstring tendon autograft. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty patients who underwent ACL reconstruction were included in the study. Patients were grouped by their graft preference. Lachman and Pivot-shift tests were performed to the patients. Laxity was measured by KT-1000 arthrometer test with 15, 20 and 30 pound power. The maximum force values of nonoperated knee and the operated knee were recorded with Cybex II isokinetic dynamometer (HUMAC) and compared to each other. International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) form, modified Lysholm and Cincinnati evaluation forms were compared between two groups. RESULTS Twenty patients included into peroneus longus allograft (Group 1) and 20 patients were included into hamstring autograft group (Group 2). The mean age of patients Group 1 and 2 were 34.25 ± 6.73, and 29.6 ± 4.55, respectively. No significant difference was noted between two groups at modified Lysholm, Cincinati and IKDC scores (p > 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference between the Lachman and Pivot hift levels (p > 0.01). No significant difference was found in KT-1000 device measurements between groups according to the performed techniques (p > 0.01). There was no statistically significant difference between Cybex extension-flexion 60 /sec measurement and extension 240 /sec measurement of the patients (p > 0.01). DISCUSSION Allografts can be preferred because of the advantages, such as lack of donor site morbidity, short operative time, large graft, small incision, minimal scar, good cosmetic appearance, less postoperative pain, less movement restriction, and less arthrofibrosis. However, there are disadvantages, such as disease transmission, low biocompatibility, immune response, long recovery time, and high cost. Although it is difficult to compare the stability and functionality of allografts and autografts because of the differences in graft processing, fixation methods, and surgical techniques in studies, similar clinical results are reported in long-term follow-ups CONCLUSIONS Graft preference is dependent on surgical experience, patient age, activity status, comorbidities, presurgical status, and patient decision. Allograft ACL reconstruction is a good alternative to arthroscopic ACL reconstruction performed with hamstring tendon graft. Abstract:PUSPOSE OF THE STUDY. Many studies have investigated the efficacy of peroneus longus tendon (PLT) in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, and donor site morbidity has not been adequately studied. Material and methods: Fifty patients who underwent ACL reconstruction using PLT were included. Ankle strengths of the patients evaluated with an analog dynamometer. Ankle range of motion (ROM) was measured with a smart phone inclonometer application. Results: There was no significant difference between the postoperative ankle strength(eversion, plantar flexion) in the donor area and the preoperative period (p=0.6 and p=0.7, respectively) and contralateral healthy side (p=0.6, p=0.6, respectively). Ankle ROM angles (dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, eversion, inversion) were significantly lower in the post-operative period compared to the preoperative period and contralateral healthy side (p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.05, p<0.05, respectively). There was no significant difference between pre-operative and post-operative AOFAS scores (p=0.2). Conclusions: Although PLT can affect ROM angles, it is a promising alternative for ACL reconstructions without causing functional morbidity. Abstract:Our hypothesis is that the peroneus longus (PL) is a great option for ligament reconstruction in the knee, and therefore the objective of the study is to determine if the use of this graft is safe and does not cause secondary damage to the harvested area. A prospective study was conducted between April 2019 and September 2022. Patients who underwent any type of knee ligament reconstruction using the PL or just the anterior half (AHPL) as grafts were followed up. These patients were evaluated according to the Tegner–Lysholm score and the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) guidelines for functional evaluation of the knee and the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Score (AOFAS) and the Foot and Ankle Disability Index (FADI) for the functional evaluation of the ankle. Most patients had an increase in the IKDC score, Tegner–Lysholm score, AOFAS and FADI regardless of the graft used in the surgical procedure, with mean values at the 24-month follow-up of, respectively, 99.02± 0.02, 98.69± 0.08, 99.92± 0.07, and 99.92± 0.07 for those with PL grafts and 99.31± 0.54, 98.88± 0.95, 100± 0.00, and 100± 0.00 for those with AHPL grafts. The differences in the scores between the two graft groups during each of the follow-up periods were significant ( P = 0.001). The use of the peroneus longus tendon as a graft in knee surgeries was shown to be adequate for achieving good knee functional results.

Abstract:The best type of autograft for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction remains debatable.Compared with bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) and hamstring tendon (HT) autografts, the quadriceps tendon (QT) autograft has comparable graft survival as well as clinical function and pain outcomes.Meta-analysis; Level of evidence, 4.A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library to July 2020. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and observational studies reporting comparisons of QT versus BPTB or HT autografts for ACL reconstruction were included. All analyses were stratified according to study design: RCTs or observational studies.A total of 24 studies were included: 7 RCTs and 17 observational studies. The 7 RCTs included 388 patients, and the 17 observational studies included 19,196 patients. No significant differences in graft failure (P = .36), the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) subjective score (P = .39), or the side-to-side difference in stability (P = .60) were noted between QT and BPTB autografts. However, a significant reduction in donor site morbidity was noted in the QT group compared with the BPTB group (risk ratio [RR], 0.17 [95% CI, 0.09-0.33]; P < .001). No significant differences in graft failure (P = .57), the IKDC subjective score (P = .25), or the side-to-side stability difference (P = .98) were noted between QT and HT autografts. However, the QT autograft was associated with a significantly lower rate of donor site morbidity than the HT autograft (RR, 0.60 [95% CI, 0.39-0.93]; P = .02). A similar graft failure rate between the QT and control groups was observed after both early and late full weightbearing, after early and late full range of motion, and after using the QT autograft with a bone plug and all soft tissue QT grafts. However, a significantly lower rate of donor site morbidity was observed in the QT group compared with the control group after both early and late full weightbearing, after early and late full range of motion, and after using the QT autograft with a bone plug and all soft tissue QT grafts. No difference in effect estimates was seen between RCTs and observational studies.The QT autograft had comparable graft survival, functional outcomes, and stability outcomes compared with BPTB and HT autografts. Hamstring tendon autograft versus LARS artificial ligament for arthroscopic posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in a long-term follow-up

Abstract:Introduction Surgical reconstruction has been increasingly recommended for the surgical management of posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) ruptures. While the choice of tissue graft still remains controversial. Currently both hamstring tendon autograft (HTG) and ligament advanced reinforcement system (LARS) artificial ligament are widely used but there are seldom reports on the comparisons of their clinical results. Our study was aimed to assess the effectiveness of these two grafts. Materials and methods Thirty-five patients with unilateral PCL rupture were enrolled in this retrospectively study. Sixteen of them received arthroscopically assisted PCL reconstruction using hamstring tendon autografts (HTG group) and nineteen using LARS ligaments (LARS group). All cases were followed up for 46–57 months with a mean of 51 months. Follow-up examinations included radiographic assessment, Lysholm score, Tegner score, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) rating scales and KT-1000 test. Results All patients improved significantly at the final follow-up compared with the examinational results preoperatively and there were no significant differences between HTG group and LARS group with respect to the results of radiographic assessment, Lysholm score, Tegner score, IKDC rating scales and KT-1000 test. Conclusions Similar good clinical results were obtained after PCL reconstruction using hamstring tendon autografts and LARS ligaments. Both LARS ligament and hamstring tendon autograft are ideal grafts for PCL reconstruction.

Bone–patellar Tendon–bone Autograft Versus LARS Artificial Ligament for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Abstract:The optimized graft for use in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is still in controversy. The bone–patellar tendon–bone (BPTB) autograft has been accepted as the gold standard for ACL reconstruction. However, donor site morbidities cannot be avoided after this treatment. The artificial ligament of ligament advanced reinforcement system (LARS) has been recommended for ACL reconstruction. The purpose of this study is to compare the midterm outcome of ACL reconstruction using BPTB autografts or LARS ligaments. Between July 2004 and March 2006, the ACL reconstruction using BPTB autografts in 30 patients and LARS ligaments in 32 patients was performed. All patients were followed up for at least 4 years and evaluated using the Lysholm knee score, Tegner score, International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score, and KT-1000 arthrometer test. There were no significant differences between the two groups with respect to the data of Lysholm scores, Tegner scores, IKDC scores, and KT-1000 arthrometer test at the latest follow-up. Our study demonstrates that the similarly good clinical results are obtained after ACL reconstruction using BPTB autografts or LARS ligaments at midterm follow-up. In addition to BPTB autografts, the LARS ligament may be a satisfactory treatment option for ACL rupture.

Abstract:Several graft options exist for reconstruction of the deficient ACL. The most commonly used grafts are the BPTB and quadrupled hamstring tendon autografts. Based on a comprehensive review of the literature, one graft is not superior to the other. Advantages and disadvantages are associated with the use of each graft. Surgeons who perform ACL reconstruction should be familiar with the use of both grafts.

Patients were assessed pre- and postoperatively (6 weeks and 3, 6, 12, and 24 months), with a range of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), graft laxity (KT-1000 arthrometer; primary outcome variable), active knee flexion and extension range of motion (ROM), peak isokinetic knee extensor and flexor strength, and a 6-hop performance battery. Limb symmetry indices (LSIs) were calculated for strength and hop measures. Secondary procedures, ACL retears, and contralateral ACL tears were reported.Results:All PROMs and knee ROM measures significantly improved (P .05) were observed—apart from the Anterior Cruciate Ligament Return to Sport after Injury (ACL-RSI) score, which was significantly better in the HT group at 3 (P = .008), 6 (P = .010), and 12 (P = .014) months. No significant changes were observed in side-to-side laxity from 6 to 24 months (P = .105), and no group differences were observed (P = .487) at 6 (HT mean, 1.2; QT mean, 1.3), 12 (HT mean, 1.1; QT mean, 1.3), and 24 (HT mean, 1.1; QT mean, 1.2) months. While the HT group demonstrated significantly greater (P < .05) quadriceps strength LSIs at 6 and 12 months, the QT group showed significantly greater (P < .05) hamstring strength LSIs at 6, 12, and 24 months. The HT group showed significantly greater (P < .05) LSIs for the single horizontal (6 months), lateral (6 and 12 months), and medial (6 months) hop tests for distance. Up until 24 months, 1 patient (QT at 22 months) had a retear, with 2 contralateral ACL tears (QT at 19 months; HT at 23 months). Secondary procedures included 5 in the HT group (manipulation under anesthesia, notch debridement, meniscal repair, and knee arthroscopy for scar tissue) and 6 in the QT group (notch debridement, meniscal repair, knee arthroscopy for scar tissue, tibial tubercle transfer, and osteochondral autologous transplantation).Conclusion:Apart from the ACL-RSI, the 2 autograft groups compared well for PROMs, knee ROM, and laxity. However, greater hamstring strength LSIs were observed for the QT cohort, with greater quadriceps strength (and hop test) LSIs in the HT cohort. The longer-term review will continue to evaluate return to sports and later-stage reinjury between the 2 graft constructs.Registration:ACTRN12618001520224p (Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry).

A prospective randomized controlled study of hamstring and bone-free quadriceps tendons autografts in arthroscopic ACL reconstruction

Abstract:Introduction: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is one of the most common surgical procedures worldwide. However, the ideal graft source is still debatable. This study compared hamstring (HT) and bone-free quadriceps (QT) tendon autografts in terms of muscle strength and patient-reported outcomes. Methods: Between June 2018 and December 2019, 46 patients were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to one of two groups for the ACL reconstruction surgery-the HT autograft group or the QT autograft group. An experienced examiner performed preoperative and postoperative examinations. The HUMAC NORM isokinetic machine (Computer Sports Medicine International-CSMI, 2004) was used to assess flexor and extensor thigh muscle strength. Both groups received the same surgical technique and fixation method. All patients were examined after three, six, nine, and 12 months. The final evaluations were performed at the 24-month follow-up. Patients' scores on the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) evaluation form and the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale were used to evaluate patient-reported outcomes. The two groups were also compared in terms of postoperative complications and activity levels. Results: The difference between preoperative and postoperative knee flexor peak torques (FPT) was lower in the QT group than in the HT group. The average difference between preoperative and postoperative knee extensor peak torque (EPT) was higher in the QT group than in the HT group. As a result, the HT group had a lower postoperative H/Q ratio (flexor strength normalized to body mass divided by extensor strength normalized to body mass) than the QT group (p < 0.001). The mean IKDC scores for the HT and QT groups were 90.13 ± 6.99 and 87.12 ± 6.61, respectively. The scores of the two groups postoperatively were close, and both groups showed significant improvement. The average graft size in the QT group was significantly greater than that in the HT group. Saphenous nerve palsy was the most common complication in the HT group (22%). Thigh hematomas were observed in two patients in the QT group and required urgent intervention (12%). Conclusion: After ACL reconstruction, we found a significant decrease in strength at the donor sites in both techniques, with similar patient-reported measures and stability outcomes. The H/Q strength ratio was higher in the QT group postoperatively, which may have a protective effect on the reconstructed ligament. Level of Evidence I It is a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract:We describe a bone-hamstring autograft for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). The semitendinosus and gracilis tendons are harvested using an open tendon stripper, keeping these distal tibial insertions intact. The bone-hamstring autograft is harvested using an oscillating saw. This modified autograft has the following advantages: (1) It possesses the potential for healing with the femur owing to its bone plug; (2) it is perfectly suited for various single-bundle reconstruction methods including oval-tunnel and rectangular-tunnel ACLR, as well as other flat ACLR methods; and (3) it is an attractive option for both primary ACLR and revision ACLR owing to its unique characteristics.
[A Prospective Clinical Study on Autologous Periosteum Wrapping Tendon Allograft for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the effectiveness of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using autologous periosteum wrapping tendon allograft by comparing with using simple tendon allograft.METHODS:Between March 2008 and November 2008, 68 patients with ACL injury were treated, who were in accordance with the inclusion criteria. They were divided into 2 groups randomly according to different treatment methods: ACL was reconstructed with autologous periosteum wrapping tendon allograft in 31 patients (test group) and with simple tendon allograft (control group) in 37 patients. There was no significant difference in gender, age, disease duration, the cause of injury, and functional score preoperatively between 2 groups (P > 0.05). Anatomic single-bundle ACL reconstruction was performed in 2 groups.RESULTS:Little exudation at tibial tunnel incision was found in 1 case respectively in both groups at 2 weeks after operation and was cured by dressing change and antibiotics. The other incisions healed by first intention. The patients were followed up 24-29 months (mean, 26 months) in the test group and 24-32 months (mean, 27 months) in the control group. CT showed bone tunnel enlargement in both groups at 2 years after operation, but the rate of the tunnel enlargement was less in the test group (5/31, 16.1%) than in the control group (14/37, 37.8%), showing significant difference (chi2 = 3.948, P = 0.047). At 2 years after operation, the results of Lachman test and pivot shift test were negative in 23 cases (74.2%) and 25 cases (80.6%) of the test group, and in 26 cases (70.3%) and 30 cases (81.1%) of the control group, respectively. KT-1000 examination showed the displacement of the test group [(1.74 +/- 0.88) mm] was less than that of the control group [(2.36 +/- 0.83) mm], showing significant difference (t = -2.979, P = 0.004). There was no significant difference in Lysholm score, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) score, Tegner score, and International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) score between 2 groups at 2 years after operation (P > 0.05).CONCLUSION:Compared with simple tendon allograft, ACL reconstruction with autologous periosteum wrapping tendon allograft can improve tendon-bone healing, and decrease the rate of bone tunnel enlargement, so it has good short-term outcome.

Abstract:Objective To compare the clinical outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament(ACL)reconstruction by using allograft and autograft of patella tendon.Methods From August 2003 to December 2005,82 ACL reconstruction patients were studied retrospectively,including 59 cases using autograft of patellar bone-tendon-bone(BPTB)and 23 cases using BPTB allograft.Physical examination,scores of IKDC,Lysholm-Tegner and VAS as well as KT-2000 measurements were used for evaluation pre-and post-operation.Results 41 autograft and 17 allograft patients were finally followed up.One allograft patient suffered re-rupture of the reconstructed ligament.Positive ADT test were found in 5 autograft and 1 allograft patients and positive Lachman test were found in 3 autograft and 1 allograft patients.No statistically significant differences were revealed in ROM.IKDC,Lysholm-Tegner Score and KT-2000 measurements showed no significant differences between two groups,but VAS for autograft group were significantly higher than allograft group(P<0.05).Conclusion ACL reconstruction with allograft and autograft achieved similar clinical outcomes.Allograft could be a reasonable choice for ACL reconstruction.

Abstract:A 3 mm catheter-based fluorescence confocal microscope has been developed for in vivo use. The catheter in this system fits through the therapeutic channel of a commercial endoscope. The catheter consists of a coherent fiber-optic imaging bundle, a miniature objective, and a focusing mechanism. The proximal end of the catheter is coupled to a slit-scan confocal microscope. Real-time images can be obtained of fluorescing tissue microstructures. The optical performance of the microendoscope is limited by the characteristics of the fiber bundle. The lateral resolution is 1.8 /spl mu/m and the axial resolution is 25 /spl mu/m. The field of view is 430 /spl mu/m. The maximum imaging depth is 200 /spl mu/m. The confocal microscope operates in both grayscale and multispectral modes. Images have been obtained of in vivo animal models and ex vivo human models. A portable confocal microscope system is under development for in vivo clinical evaluation.
