Abstract:Spatial memory relies on encoding, storing, and retrieval of knowledge about objects' positions in their surrounding environment. Blind people have to rely on sensory modalities other than vision to memorize items that are spatially displaced, however, to date, very little is known about the influence of early visual deprivation on a person's ability to remember and process sound locations. To fill this gap, we tested sighted and congenitally blind adults and adolescents in an audio-spatial memory task inspired by the classical card game "Memory." In this research, subjects (blind, n = 12; sighted, n = 12) had to find pairs among sounds (i.e., animal calls) displaced on an audio-tactile device composed of loudspeakers covered by tactile sensors. To accomplish this task, participants had to remember the spatialized sounds' position and develop a proper mental spatial representation of their locations. The test was divided into two experimental conditions of increasing difficulty dependent on the number of sounds to be remembered (8 vs. 24). Results showed that sighted participants outperformed blind participants in both conditions. Findings were discussed considering the crucial role of visual experience in properly manipulating auditory spatial representations, particularly in relation to the ability to explore complex acoustic configurations.

The influence of early visual deprivation on audio-spatial working memory.

Abstract:Objective: This study investigates how spatial working memory skills, and the processing and retrieval of distal auditory spatial information are influenced by visual experience. Method: We developed an experimental paradigm using an acoustic simulation. The performance of congenitally blind and sighted participants (n = 9 per group) was compared when recalling sequences of spatialised auditory items in the same or reverse order of presentation. Two experimental conditions based on stimuli features were tested: non-semantic and semantic. Results: Blind participants had a shorter memory span in the backward than the forward order of presentation. In contrast, sighted participants did not, revealing that blindness affects spatial information processing with greater executive source involvement. Furthermore, we found that blind subjects performed worse overall than the sighted group and that the semantic information significantly improved the performance, regardless of the experimental group and the sequences' order of presentation. Conclusions: Lack of early visual experience affects the ability to encode the surrounding space. Congenital blindness influences the processing and retrieval of spatial auditory items, suggesting that visual experience plays a pivotal role in calibrating spatial memory abilities using the remaining sensory modalities. Abstract:There are a very few people who have the ability to "see" the surroundings by the echoes, which is called echolocation. The study of the brain mechanism of echolocation can not only help to improve the blind assistance device, but also provides a window into the research of brain's plasticity. In this paper, we developed a wearable system to transform the spatial information captured by camera into a voice description and fed it back to blind users which is inspired by echolocation. After our online virtual scene training, users can easily discriminate object location in the camera's view, motion of the objects, even shape of the objects. Compared with natural echolocation, it's easier to learn and be applied in daily life. In addition, the device achieves high spacial resolution. In this study, two trained blind subjects and two non-trained sighted subjects were tested by using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI). We obtain the fMRI images of the subjects' brain activity when they were listening to the sound of the wearable prototype. Intriguingly, we find that after training with the blind assistance system, the blind' visual area of the brain have been activated when they are dealing with the acoustic feedback from the device.

Abstract:Spatial cognition is a daily life ability, developed in order to be able to understand and interact with our environment. Even if all the senses are involved in mental representation of space elaboration, the lack of vision makes it more difficult, especially because of the importance of peripheral information in updating the relative positions of surrounding landmarks when one is moving. Spatial audio technology has long been used for studies of human perception, particularly in the area of auditory source localisation. The ability to reproduce individual sounds at desired positions, or complex spatial audio scenes, without the need to manipulate physical devices has provided researchers with many benefits. We present a review of several studies employing the power of spatial audio virtual reality for research in spatial cognition with blind individuals. These include studies investigating simple spatial configurations, architectural navigation, reaching to sounds, and sound design for improved acceptability. Prospects for future research, including those currently underway, are also discussed.

Abstract:BackgroundPhysical activity (PA) is important for controlling childhood obesity, but a comprehensive PA model for school-aged children is lacking. ObjectivesGuided by the youth PA promotion (YPAP) model, this study estimated the direct and indirect effects of self-efficacy, enjoyment, parental influence, and environment on self-reported PA and pedometer steps. A secondary purpose was to explore the association between self-reported PA and pedometer steps. MethodsAn observational and prospective study was conducted among 133 children, aged 8–11 years old, from 10 elementary schools with afterschool programs in a Midwestern U.S. school district from August through October 2013. PA was assessed by a 7-day recall scale and pedometers. Other variables were assessed by validated questionnaires. ResultsApproximately 65 (49%) children were overweight or obese—only 17 (13%) met national PA recommendations—and body mass index z-score was negatively correlated with pedometer steps (r = −.18 p = .04). A path analysis showed that self-efficacy had a direct effect on self-reported PA and pedometer steps, enjoyment had only a direct effect on self-reported PA, and parental influence had a direct effect on pedometer steps and an indirect effect on self-reported PA through self-efficacy and enjoyment. The association between self-reported PA and pedometer steps was not significant. DiscussionBecause this study only partially supports the YPAP model, studies with a larger sample size and longitudinal design are essential to further examine this model. The nonsignificant relationship of self-reported PA with pedometer steps may be due to the systematic error resulting from a common method artifact of self-report. Given the importance of parental influence, enjoyment, and self-efficacy, targeting these three determinants in future interventions to increase PA among children is recommended.

Abstract:Working memory is a cognitive system devoted to storage and retrieval processing of information. Numerous studies on the development of working memory have investigated the processing of visuo-spatial and verbal non-spatialized information; however, little is known regarding the refinement of acoustic spatial and memory abilities across development. Here, we hypothesize that audio-spatial memory skills improve over development, due to strengthening spatial and cognitive skills such as semantic elaboration. We asked children aged 6 to 11 years old (n = 55) to pair spatialized animal calls with the corresponding animal spoken name. Spatialized sounds were emitted from an audio-haptic device, haptically explored by children with the dominant hand's index finger. Children younger than 8 anchored their exploration strategy on previously discovered sounds instead of holding this information in working memory and performed worse than older peers when asked to pair the spoken word with the corresponding animal call. In line with our hypothesis, these findings demonstrate that age-related improvements in spatial exploration and verbal coding memorization strategies affect how children learn and memorize items belonging to a complex acoustic spatial layout. Similar to vision, audio-spatial memory abilities strongly depend on cognitive development in early years of life.

Abstract:In the absence of vision, spatial representation may be altered. When asked to compare the relative distances between three sounds (i.e., auditory spatial bisection task), blind individuals demonstrate significant deficits and do not show an event‐related potential response mimicking the visual C1 reported in sighted people. However, we have recently demonstrated that the spatial deficit disappears if coherent time and space cues are presented to blind people, suggesting that they may use time information to infer spatial maps. In this study, we examined whether the modification of temporal cues during space evaluation altered the recruitment of the visual and auditory cortices in blind individuals. We demonstrated that the early (50–90 ms) occipital response, mimicking the visual C1, is not elicited by the physical position of the sound, but by its virtual position suggested by its temporal delay. Even more impressively, in the same time window, the auditory cortex also showed this pattern and responded to temporal instead of spatial coordinates.

Abstract:The purposes of this study were (1) to evaluate the various methods of preoperative staging of osteoid osteomas, (2) to compare the different methods of intraoperative localization and excision of the tumor, and (3) to develop a clinical strategy for the treatment of persistent (recurrent) lesions. From 1978 until 1986, 14 consecutive patients had excision of osteoid osteomas. All patients' operative reports, roentgenograms, bone scans, computed tomographic scans and histologic studies were reviewed. With an average follow-up period of 94.5 months, 13 of 14 patients were cured with one operative procedure. One patient required two procedures. No patient developed a recurrence. Eleven of 14 niduses were confirmed on hematoxylin and eosin sections. Computed tomographic scan was the most useful preoperative study in localizing the nidus. It helped determine the surgical approach and the portion of bone to be resected. Intraoperative nuclear scanning (IONS) is a reliable technique in confirming complete removal of the nidus, with no increase in operative time. Intraoperative scanning did not appreciably affect the amount of bone resected. Recurrent tumors can be reliably resected, with a high cure rate, by careful preoperative staging and with use of IONS.
Novel Virtual Moving Sound-based Spatial Auditory Brain-Computer Interface Paradigm

Abstract:This paper reports on a study in which a novel virtual moving sound-based spatial auditory brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigm is developed. Classic auditory BCIs rely on spatially static stimuli, which are often boring and difficult to perceive when subjects have non-uniform spatial hearing perception characteristics. The concept of moving sound proposed and tested in the paper allows for the creation of a P300 oddball paradigm of necessary target and non-target auditory stimuli, which are more interesting and easier to distinguish. We present a report of our study of seven healthy subjects, which proves the concept of moving sound stimuli usability for a novel BCI. We compare online BCI classification results in static and moving sound paradigms yielding similar accuracy results. The subject preference reports suggest that the proposed moving sound protocol is more comfortable and easier to discriminate with the online BCI.

Abstract:In 2011, van Dijck and Fias described a positional SNARC (Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes) effect: the SPoARC (Spatial-Positional Association of Response Codes). To-be-remembered items (e.g., numbers, words) presented centrally on a screen seemed to acquire a left-to-right spatial dimension. If confirmed, this spatialization could be crucial for immediate memory theories. However, given the intricate links between visual and spatial dimensions, this effect could be due to the visual presentation (on a computer screen), which could have probed the left-to-right direction of reading/writing. To allow a generalization of this effect, we adapted van Dijck and Fias's (2011) task using an auditory version of Sternberg's paradigm. Lists of five consonants were auditorily presented at a rate of 3 s/item. A SPoARC effect was observed. The consequences are discussed first from an immediate memory perspective, putting forward the view that order could be coded through spatialization, and then in terms of similarities between SPoARC and SNARC.

Abstract:Vision is thought to support the development of spatial abilities in the other senses. If this is true, how does spatial hearing develop in people lacking visual experience? We comprehensively addressed this question by investigating auditory-localization abilities in 17 congenitally blind and 17 sighted individuals using a psychophysical minimum-audible-angle task that lacked sensorimotor confounds. Participants were asked to compare the relative position of two sound sources located in central and peripheral, horizontal and vertical, or frontal and rear spaces. We observed unequivocal enhancement of spatial-hearing abilities in congenitally blind people, irrespective of the field of space that was assessed. Our results conclusively demonstrate that visual experience is not a prerequisite for developing optimal spatial-hearing abilities and that, in striking contrast, the lack of vision leads to a general enhancement of auditory-spatial skills.

Abstract:Using new developments in the mental comparison task paradigm, this study addresses the question of the influence of prior visual experience in the natural use of mental perspective to achieve mental spatial tasks without any protocol-imposed perspective. During the experiment, 39 participants (11 early blind, 13 late blind, and 15 blindfolded-sighted) explored two corridor maps to memorise the spatial arrangement of 10 objects disposed along corridors. After the learning phase, several tasks addressing spatial memory and reasoning used in the mental spatial representation were performed. Blindfolded-sighted participants preferred an egocentric perspective, while the two visually impaired groups showed no overriding preference between egocentric and allocentric perspectives. Results showed a performance advantage for egocentric over allocentric perspectives, regardless of visual experience. Our results shed light on previous assumptions regarding cognitive mental map construction, suggesting the need to reflect on previous results and their dependence on imposed mental perspectives.

Abstract:In this study we describe a methodology to realize visual images cognition in the broader sense, by a cross-modal stimulation through the auditory channel. An original algorithm of conversion from bi-dimensional images to sounds has been established and tested on several subjects. Our results show that subjects where able to discriminate with a precision of 95\% different sounds corresponding to different test geometric shapes. Moreover, after brief learning sessions on simple images, subjects where able to recognize among a group of 16 complex and never-trained images a single target by hearing its acoustical counterpart. Rate of recognition was found to depend on image characteristics, in 90% of the cases, subjects did better than choosing at random. This study contribute to the understanding of cross-modal perception and help for the realization of systems that use acoustical signals to help visually impaired persons to recognize objects and improve navigation

Capturing Visual Attention With Perturbed Auditory Spatial Cues

Abstract:Lateralized sounds can orient visual attention, with benefits for audio-visual processing. Here, we asked to what extent perturbed auditory spatial cues-resulting from cochlear implants (CI) or unilateral hearing loss (uHL)-allow this automatic mechanism of information selection from the audio-visual environment. We used a classic paradigm from experimental psychology (capture of visual attention with sounds) to probe the integrity of audio-visual attentional orienting in 60 adults with hearing loss: bilateral CI users (N = 20), unilateral CI users (N = 20), and individuals with uHL (N = 20). For comparison, we also included a group of normal-hearing (NH, N = 20) participants, tested in binaural and monaural listening conditions (i.e., with one ear plugged). All participants also completed a sound localization task to assess spatial hearing skills. Comparable audio-visual orienting was observed in bilateral CI, uHL, and binaural NH participants. By contrast, audio-visual orienting was, on average, absent in unilateral CI users and reduced in NH listening with one ear plugged. Spatial hearing skills were better in bilateral CI, uHL, and binaural NH participants than in unilateral CI users and monaurally plugged NH listeners. In unilateral CI users, spatial hearing skills correlated with audio-visual-orienting abilities. These novel results show that audio-visual-attention orienting can be preserved in bilateral CI users and in uHL patients to a greater extent than unilateral CI users. This highlights the importance of assessing the impact of hearing loss beyond auditory difficulties alone: to capture to what extent it may enable or impede typical interactions with the multisensory environment.
An investigation of multisensory perception of surrounding space in aided congenitally hearing impaired

Abstract:We tested auditory spatial motion localization in congenitally hearing impaired adult users of bilateral cochlear implants, and other hearing assistive devices. The group showed severely impaired capabilities despite extensive device use, emphasizing the role of nature in sensory development. We then investigate whether the deficit is maintained for other sensory modalities, by using an in-house sensory substitution device that provides weighted vibrotactile cues on fingertips to induce 3D spatial motion perception. The performance was significantly higher, both in the combined audio-tactile task and the tactile task itself, with accuracy comparable to typically hearing subjects. With touch, we also showed considerably fewer front-back and right-left confusions. The rapid audio-tactile binding and availability of 3D space representation through touch, point to the significant role of nurture in spatial perception development and its amodal nature. The findings show promise towards advancing multisensory solutions for spatial hearing rehabilitation.
Bodily and Visual-Cognitive Navigation Aids to Enhance Spatial Recall in Mild Cognitive Impairment

Abstract:Background: Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) syndrome often report navigation difficulties, accompanied by impairments in egocentric and allocentric spatial memory. However, studies have shown that both bodily (e.g., motor commands, proprioception, vestibular information) and visual-cognitive (e.g., maps, directional arrows, attentional markers) cues can support spatial memory in MCI. Objective: We aimed to assess navigation cues for innovative spatial training in aging. Methods: Fifteen MCI patients were recruited for this study. Their egocentric and allocentric memory recall performances were tested through a navigation task with five different virtual reality (VR) assistive encoding navigation procedures (bodily, vision only, interactive allocentric map, reduced executive load, free navigation without cues). Bodily condition consisted of an immersive VR setup to engage self-motion cues, vision only condition consisted of passive navigation without interaction, in the interactive allocentric map condition patients could use a bird-view map, in the reduced executive load condition directional cues and attentional markers were employed, and during free navigation no aid was implemented. Results: Bodily condition improved spatial memory compared to vision only and free navigation without cues. In addition, the interactive allocentric map was superior to the free navigation without cues. Surprisingly, the reduced executive load was comparable to vison only condition. Moreover, a detrimental impact of free navigation was observed on allocentric memory across testing trials. Conclusions: These findings challenge the notion of an amodal representation of space in aging, suggesting that spatial maps can be influenced by the modality in which the environment was originally encoded.
