Abstract:Plasmonic color generation utilizing ultra-thin metasurfaces as well as metallic nanoparticles hold a great promise for a wide range of applications, including color displays, data storage, and information encryption due to its high spatial resolution and mechanical/chemical stability. Most of the recently demonstrated systems generate static colors; however, more advanced applications such as data storage require fast and flexible means to tune the plasmonic colors, while keeping them vibrant and stable. Here, a surface-relief aluminum metasurface that reflects polarization-tunable plasmonic colors is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Excitation of localized surface plasmons encodes discrete combinations of the incident and reflected polarized light into diverse colors. A single storage unit - a nanopixel - stores a multiple-bit piece of information in the orientation of its constituent nanoantennae. This information is then reliably retrieved by inspecting the reflected color sequence with two linear polarizers. It is the broad color variability and high spatial resolution of the proposed encoding approach that supports a strong promise for rapid parallel read-out and encryption of high-density optical data. Our method also enables the robust generation of dynamic kaleidoscopic images with no detrimental "cross-talk" effect. The approach opens up a new route for advanced dynamic steganography, high-density parallel-access optical data storage, and optical information encryption.

Stacking of Colors in Exfoliable Plasmonic Superlattices.

Abstract:Color printing with plasmonic resonators can overcome limitations in pigment-based printing approaches. While layering in pigment-based prints results in familiar color mixing effects, the color effects of stacking plasmonic resonator structures have not been investigated. Here, we demonstrate an experimental strategy to fabricate a 3-tiered complex superlattice of nanostructures with multiple sets of building blocks. Laser interference lithography was used to fabricate the nanostructures and a thin-layer of aluminum was deposited to introduce plasmonic colors. Interestingly, the structures exhibited drastic color changes when the layers of structures were sequentially exfoliated. Our theoretical analysis shows that the colors of the superlattice nanostructure were predominantly determined by the plasmonic properties of the two topmost layers. These results suggest the feasibility of the sub-wavelength vertical stacking of multiple plasmonic colors for applications in sensitive tamper-evident seals, dense 3D barcoding, and substrates for plasmonic color laser printing.

Abstract:Versatile optical steganography platform based on soft materials is achieved by programming the anchoring boundary of liquid crystals (LCs). The robust surface reliefs and stimuli‐responsive LCs endow the platform with reliable stability and tunability, leading to a unique optical steganography technique, which builds up a new way for optical information encoding, security imprinting, and integrated flat optics. Engineering the properties of light with multi‐channel planar elements can produce independent spectral response, and has formed the solid basis for image steganography techniques, which holds great promise for applications including information storage, optical encryption, and anti‐counterfeiting. However, most of the recently reported steganography systems suffer from limited size, sophisticated fabrication, and finite degree of freedom in encoding and decoding process. Herein, a versatile image steganography system based on soft material is proposed. The polarization and intensity of transmitted light are modulated by programing the anchoring boundary of liquid crystals, allowing arbitrary independent images multiplexing in single‐size element with high fidelity. Specifically, the stimuli‐responsiveness of liquid crystals endows the platform with a new degree of freedom to manipulate the transmitted spectrum dynamically, further sketching a prospective framework toward a new type of steganography with fascinating tunability. The proposed strategy sheds new light on multifarious display system by harnessing the stimuli‐responsiveness of soft materials, leading to promising applications in information storing, image steganography, anti‐counterfeiting, and multilevel encryption techniques.

Abstract:* She noticed that there was a swelling on the right side the abdominal wound; there was no vaginal discharge of lood. The pain gradually passed off, and her state of health again became satisfactory. On April 26th, 1910-that is to say, four and a half months after the operation-she observed a vaginal discharge of blood, accompanied by acute pain in the abdomen, and she noticed that the swelling on the right side of the abdominal wound had again appeared. She suffered also from a dull pain across the sacrum, from headache, and from lassitude. This discharge, which was thus associated with the usual signs and symptoms of a normal menstrual period, continued up to April 30th, 1910, and subsequently gradually diminished. When the patient was readmitted on May 4th, 1910, there was slight leucorrhoea, but no discharge of blood. The os was unduly soft. The ovary in the right abdominal wall was tender and much swollen, measuring approximately 5 in. in diameter. Trhere was no redness nor oedema of the overlying tissues. The temperature was 990 F., the pulse was 76, and the respirations averaged 24. The heart and lungs appeared to be normal, and the urine, which had a specific gravity of 1005, was acid in reaction and free from albumen and sugar. On the following days the ovary steadily diminished in size, and by May 10th it was only just palpa,ble, only very slightly tender, and the patient was practically free from all pain. If we are to venture, in view of the facts of this case, to put forward any hypothesis regarding the nature of menstruation, we would say that the female organism is, in the first place, during a month under the influence of a toxin the origin of which is at present unknown but whose action is elective for the ovary; that the toxin pre-duces an intense congestion of the ovary and perhaps a special metabolism; and that then an internal secretion derived fram the ovary is formed whichhas a special action on the uteras, and which determines the discharge of blood. In the above case, for a period of four and a half months there were present certain signs such as the swelling of the ovary, flushings, and general lassitude, which were strong evidence of the presence in the organism of a poison having an elective action for the vasomotor system. Abstract:Plasmonic nanocomposite superstructures are fabricated through a facile triple co‐deposition process where the metal nanoparticles are incorporated within a glass matrix. The combinatorial engineering in their material composition and thickness offers extensive color performance in transmission and reflection modes, spanning from transparent to full colors, enabling wafer‐scale rich and dynamic color images useful for colorful data storage and steganography. Plasmonic nanoparticles serve as nonfading pigments for vibrant outdoor glasses and smart windows, offering vivid colors under sunlight with exceptional spatial resolution. However, simultaneously achieving the desired plasmonic coloration in both reflection and transmission with a full‐color gamut remains a formidable challenge, especially when using a single fabrication method. Here, a facile physical triple co‐deposition method to construct scalable plasmonic superstructures, optimal for dichroic color engineering is demonstrated. A key feature of such all‐in‐one plasmonic superstructures lies in extensive color performance in transmission and reflection modes, spanning from transparent invisibility to vivid full colors across the wavelength range of over 600 nm. This exceptional coloration fidelity stems from their 3D‐stacked nanocomposite where plasmonic nanoparticles incorporate a random but uniform distribution within a glass matrix. Wafer‐scale rich and dynamic color images useful for colorful data storage and steganography, as demonstrated through layer‐by‐layer color painting with combinatorial plasmonic superstructures are shown.

Abstract:Malus' law regulating the intensity of light when passed through a polarizer, forms the solid basis for image steganography based on orthogonal polarizations of light to convey hidden information without adverse perceptions, which underpins important practices in information encryptions, anti-counterfeitings, and security labels. Unfortunately, the restriction to orthogonal states being taken for granted in the common perceptions fails to advance cryptoinformation to upgraded levels of security. By introducing a vectorial compound metapixel design, arbitrary nonorthogonal polarization multiplexing of independent grayscale images with high fidelity and strong concealment is demonstrated. The Jones matrix treatment of compound metapixels consisting of double atoms with tailored in-plane orientation sum and difference allows point-by-point configuring of both the amplitude and polarization rotations of the output beam in an analytical and linear form. With this, both multiplexing two continuous grayscale images in arbitrary nonorthogonal polarization angles and concealing grayscale image on another in an arbitrary disclosure angle window are experimentally demonstrated in the visible TiO2 metasurface platform. The methods shed new light on multifarious metaoptics by harnessing the new degree of freedom and unlock the full potential of metasurface polarization optics.

Abstract:A latticed holographically steganographic array is constructed by incorporating a plasticizer (tri‐o‐cresyl phosphate, TOCP) into spirooxazine (SO) based polymers, thereby modulating the photochromic and UV‐fluorescence kinetics between SO and merocyanine (MC). The display period of fluorescence array is widely modulated, corresponding to the conversion from spatial lattice coordinates to holographic display time. By using spatiotemporal dual‐encryption keys, hidden 3D images can be easily retrieved from reconstructed holographic videos with a refresh rate of 1.125Hz. Independently‐manipulated optical encryption has attracted great attention due to its high security and multiple application scenarios. Although photochromic molecules have become preferred holographic display units, the integration of dynamic modulation both in hologram and fluorescence for orthogonal encryption is still challenged. Herein, a latticed holographically steganographic array is constructed by incorporating a plasticizer (tri‐o‐cresyl phosphate, TOCP) into spirooxazine (SO) based polymers, thereby modulating the isomerization rate and the UV‐fluorescence kinetics between SO and merocyanine (MC). The period to reach fluorescence saturated value for each information bit in the latticed device can be widely modulated between 60 and 1700 s. Based on the property, only through ultraviolet stimulation can array information gradually be converted from spatial lattice coordinates to holographic display time. Then, a hidden 3D image can be determined from rapidly updatable reconstructed hologram video with refresh rate 1.125 Hz by the above spatiotemporal dual‐encryption keys. This work provides a bright path for the ultra‐high safety steganography and adaptive stereoscopic imaging.

Abstract:Because of the subwavelength pixel resolution, long-term stability, and radiation resistance, plasmonic colors show great potential applications in high-resolution color display, high-density information storage, and stable color printing. Herein, laser-induced bubbles are used to realize time- and direction-controllable plasmonic color scanning in a metallic nanohole array, which can give rise to plasmonic colors. When the environment is changed from air to water, the peak wavelength of the metallic nanohole array is redshifted by approximate to 146 nm, and the color of the metallic nanohole array is changed from purple to yellow. Experimentally, these color changes are demonstrated when the water gradually covers the metallic nanohole array. More importantly, by using laser-induced bubbles, time- and direction-controllable plasmonic color scanning is achieved by controlling the movement speeds and positions of a control laser. Compared to the current state-of-the-art plasmonic color scanning technology, the scanning time by using laser-induced bubbles decreases by four orders of magnitude for the same scanning length. The time- and direction-controllable color scanning provides additional degrees of freedom (scanning time and scanning direction), and it may have potential applications in information display, security, storage, and encoding.

Abstract:Varying only the in-plane or out-of-plane dimensions of nanostructures produces a wide range of colourful elements in metasurfaces and thin films. However, achieving shades of grey and control of colour saturation remains challenging. Here, we introduce a hybrid approach to colour generation based on the tuning of nanostructure geometry in all three dimensions. Through two-photon polymerization lithography, we systematically investigated colour generation from the simple single nanopillar geometry made of low-refractive-index material; realizing grayscale and full colour palettes with control of hue, saturation, brightness through tuning of height, diameter, and periodicity of nanopillars. Arbitrary colourful and grayscale images were painted by mapping desired prints to precisely controllable parameters during 3D printing. We extend our understanding of the scattering properties of the low-refractive-index nanopillar to demonstrate grayscale inversion and colour desaturation, with steganography at the level of single nanopillars.
Optical Fireworks Based on Multifocal Three-Dimensional Color Prints

Abstract:Colorful three-dimensional (3D) prints are promising as practical anticounterfeiting labels with easily recognizable and striking visual effects. However, existing colorful 3D displays either require specific illumination conditions with multiple coherent lasers, hence suffer from speckles, or are unsuitable as passive labels. Here, we report a concept of a virtual 3D color object consisting of colorful focal spots in free space. The colors and corresponding "floating heights" of these spots are independently controlled via the design of 3D printed microlens profiles and heights of nanopillars that act as structural-color filters. Despite the unremarkable appearance of the printed substrate under both optical and electron microscopy, illumination with incoherent white light reveals information in the form of bright colorful spots appearing at designated heights above the plane of the substrate. The term "optical fireworks" refers to the way these spots appear and disappear under an optical microscope as one continuously shifts the focal plane. Behavioural and socio-demographic characteristics of Dutch neighbourhoods with high prevalence of childhood obesity.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To identify neighbourhoods with increased prevalence of overweight children and to examine whether the association between neighbourhood and overweight can be explained by demographic characteristics and energy-related behaviours. METHOD This cross-sectional study was carried out among 4,072 primary schoolchildren in the city of Zwolle, The Netherlands. Data collection consisted of measured height, weight and waist circumference, and a parental questionnaire on socio-demographic characteristics, dietary and (in)activity behaviour of their child. With multivariate logistic regressions, associations between unhealthy behaviours and neighbourhoods (defined by postal code) with high and low prevalence of childhood overweight were investigated. RESULTS In three neighbourhoods the prevalence of overweight was significantly higher (16.5% vs. 10.6%, p < 0.05). The odds of living in these neighbourhoods were higher among children watching >2 h television/day (OR: 1.57; 95% CI: 1.15-2.14), not eating breakfast daily (OR: 2.86; 95% CI: 1.93-4.23), drinking >3 glasses/day sugared drinks (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.01-1.50) on weekdays and not participating in organized sports (OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.09-1.59). This odds was however lower among children eating <2 fruit/day (OR: 0.83; 95% CI: 0.69-1.00) on weekends. The association between neighbourhood and overweight altered slightly after adjustment for socio-demographic and behavioural characteristics during weekdays (OR: 1.42; 95% CI: 1.05-1.92) and weekends (OR: 1.50; 95% CI; 1.11-2.02). CONCLUSION Three neighbourhoods with higher prevalence of overweight were identified. A small part of the association between overweight and neighbourhood is explained by socio-demographic factors and unhealthy behaviours measured in this study. Neighbourhoods with higher overweight prevalence are a priority setting for targeted interventions to prevent overweight. The association between neighbourhood and overweight needs to be explored further to understand the role the neighbourhood can play in tackling overweight.

Abstract:Advanced coloration method is of pivotal importance in science, technology, and engineering. However, three‐dimensional (3D) structural colors that are critical for emerging multi‐dimensional information representation and recording are rarely achievable. Here, we report on a facile voxel‐level programmable 3D structural coloration in the bulk lithium niobate (LiNbO3) crystal. This is achieved by engineering wavelength‐selective interference between ordinary (O) and extraordinary (E) light in the crystal matrix. To induce effective phase contrast between O and E light for establishing the highly localized interference across the visible band, we revealed the presence of a pulse‐internal‐coupling effect in the single‐pulse ultrafast laser‐crystal interaction and thus developed an ultrafast laser‐induced micro‐amorphization (MA) strategy to manipulate local matrix structure. Consequently, micro‐nano‐scale colorful voxels can be fast inscribed into any spatial position of the crystal matrix in one step. We demonstrated that the colors can be flexibly manipulated and fast extracted in 3D space. Multi‐dimensional MA‐color data storage with large capacity, high writing and readout speed, long lifetime, and excellent stability under harsh conditions was achieved. The present principle enables multifunctional 3D structural coloration devices inside high‐refractive‐index transparent dielectrics and can serve as a general platform to innovate next‐generation information optics. Abstract:3D Structural Coloration Advanced coloration methods are of pivotal importance in science, technology, and engineering. In article number 2303256 by Bo Zhang, Dezhi Tan, Jianrong Qiu, and co‐workers report the achievement of an unprecedented facile voxel‐level programmable 3D structural coloration in bulk lithium niobate crystals. Micro/nano‐scale color voxels can be quickly inscribed into any spatial position of the matrix in one step. This principle is anticipated to boost the applications of structural coloration in 3D displays, encryption, anti‐counterfeiting, and data storage.

Abstract:Thin film coatings with tunable colors have a broad range of applications, from solid-state reflective displays to steganography. Here, we propose a novel approach to chalcogenide phase change material (PCM)-incorporated steganographic nano-optical coatings (SNOC) as thin film color reflectors for optical steganography. The proposed SNOC design combines a broad-band and a narrow-band absorber made up of PCMs to achieve tunable optical Fano resonance in the visible wavelength, which is a scalable platform for accessing the full-color range. We demonstrate that the line width of the Fano resonance can be dynamically tuned by switching the structural phase of PCM from amorphous to crystalline, which is crucial for obtaining high-purity colors. For steganography applications, the cavity layer of SNOC is divided into an ultralow loss PCM and a high index dielectric material with identical optical thickness. We show that electrically tunable color pixels can be fabricated using the SNOC on a microheater device.
Scanning Plasmonic Color Display

Abstract:Control over plasmonic colors on the nanoscale is of great interest for high-resolution display, imaging, and information encryption applications. However, so far, very limited schemes have been attempted for dynamic plasmonic color generation. In this paper, we demonstrate a scanning plasmonic color generation scheme, in which subwavelength plasmonic pixels can be laterally switched on/off through directional hydrogenation/dehydrogenation of a magnesium screen. We show several dynamic plasmonic color displays with different scanning functions by varying the number and geometries of the palladium gates, where hydrogen enters the scanning screens. In particular, we employ the scanning effects to create a dynamic plasmonic quick response code. The information cannot be decrypted by varying the polarization states of light or by accessing the physical features. Rather, it can only be read out using hydrogen as a decoding key. Our work advances the established design concepts for plasmonic color printing and provides insights into the development of optical information storage and anticounterfeiting features.

Abstract:Vivid structural colors, inspired by butterflies, which can display iridescent colors dynamically when white light illuminates the surface with subwavelength period ripples, have attracted significant interest for its potential application in the fields of information storage, anti-counterfeiting, etc. However, there is still a huge demand for the development of multipattern dynamically transformable display surfaces using a versatile method. A new scheme based on femtosecond laser combined with variable polarization processing has been proposed. This scheme enables a surface with a structural color function that can be easily prepared by adjusting the polarization of the laser via a half-wave plate. Four types of structural units with designated periodic orientations are written on the same sample to exhibit four different colorful images. Through experiment and analysis, it is demonstrated that different colors can be displayed by changing the observation angle, and a multi-pattern display can be realized by rotating the sample. The lithography-free inscribed patterns show a strong azimuthal angular sensitivity to color and its brightness. This work demonstrates that femtosecond laser surface structuring provides a versatile platform to create various micro/nanostructures on a solid surface, and this technique can be used for the biomimetic lithography-free processing of any material using ablation.

Abstract:The application of plasmonic dimeric nanostructures in color displays, data storage, and especially metamaterials necessitates the patterning of dimers into ordered arrays, but controllable assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles into patterned dimer arrays on substrates still remains a challenge. Here, a facile laser‐scanning‐based strategy to fabricate quasi‐3D patterned arrays of plasmonic nanoparticle dimers with controlled orientation for plasmonic information encryption is reported. Laser scanning of polymer‐covered plasmonic nanoparticle (e.g., gold) arrays selectively exposes the surface of irradiated nanoparticle via localized photothermal heating, guiding the assembly of another type of nanoparticles onto the exposure nanoparticle surface to form dimers on substrates. This combined top‐down/bottom‐up approach is highly flexible in forming high‐resolution patterns of plasmonic dimers from nanoparticles of different sizes and shapes. The z‐axis orientation, interparticle spacing, and nanoparticle size and shape of plasmonic dimers can be precisely tuned, enabling the modulation of the coupled resonances of the dimer arrays. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the patterned dimer arrays can be used in information encryption where their plasmonic color can be repeatedly displayed and erased. This work provides an important addition to tools for the fabrication of patterned complex plasmonic nanostructures from as‐synthesized nanoparticles with broad applications.

Laser writing of bright colours on near-percolation plasmonic reflector arrays

Abstract:Colouration by surface nanostructuring has attracted a great deal of attention by the virtue of making use of environment-friendly recyclable materials and generating non-bleaching colours [1-8]. Recently, it was found possible to delegate the task of colour printing to laser post-processing that modifies carefully designed and fabricated nanostructures [9,10]. Here we take the next crucial step in the development of structural colour printing by dispensing with preformed nanostructures and using instead near-percolation metal films atop dielectric-metal sandwiches, i.e., near-percolation plasmonic reflector arrays. Scanning rapidly (~ 20 {\mu}m/s) across 4-nm-thin island-like gold films supported by 30-nm-thin silica layers atop 100-nm-thick gold layers with a strongly focused Ti-sapphire laser beam, while adjusting the average laser power from 1 to 10 mW, we produce bright colours varying from green to red by laser-heating-induced merging and reshaping of gold islands. Selection of strongly heated islands and their reshaping, both originating from the excitation of plasmonic resonances, are strongly influenced by the polarization direction of laser illumination, so that the colours produced are well pronounced only when viewed with the same polarization. Conversely, the laser colour writing with circular polarizations results in bright polarization-independent colour images. The fabrication procedure for near-percolation reflector arrays is exceedingly simple and scalable to mass production, while the laser-induced modification occurs inherently with the subwavelength resolution. This unique combination of remarkable features makes the approach developed for laser colour writing readily amenable for practical implementation and use in diverse applications ranging from nanoscale patterning for security marking to large-scale colour printing for decoration.

Abstract:Biomimetic stimuli-responsive structure colors (SCs) can improve the visualization and identification in the micro functional structure field such as information encryption/decryption and smart actuators. However, it is still challenging to develop the ability to 4D print arbitrary submerged colorful patterns with stimuli-responsive materials at the microscale. Herein, a hydrogel photoresist with feature resolution (98 nm) for the fabrication of 4D microscopic SCs by the femtosecond direct laser writing method is developed. The 4D printed woodpile SCs are grouped as pixel palettes with various laser parameters and they spanned almost the entire color space. The coloring mechanism of diffraction gratings is not only investigated by optics microscopy and spectroscopy but also supported by simulation. Moreover, the 4D printed hydrogel-integrated amphichromatic fish constructions and pixelated painting can visually discolor reversibly by regulating the solution pH. This finding promises an ideal coloring method for sensors, anti-counterfeiting labels, and transformable photonic devices.

Abstract:A digitalized lithography technique is employed to create pixelated photoresist microarrays of different heights, allowing precise control over the thickness of the liquid crystal (LC) layer. Simultaneously, dynamic and reversible tunability of the structural color is achieved by stimuli‐responsive LCs. Applications of this technology in optical steganography, color‐based thermal sensors, and optical coding are also explored. Structural colors are widespread in nature and have become an important component of the lives. Considerable efforts have been made toward reversible color tuning, which underpins intriguing applications, including color displays, anti‐counterfeiting, and information encryption. However, the limited size, complicated fabrication processes, and low modulation speeds of structural colors are the main obstacles to their further development. Herein, a facile method to realize dynamically tunable structural colors is presented, which are enabled by the pixelated programming of soft materials on thickness. Pixelated photoresist microarrays with different heights are obtained using a digitalized lithography technique, enabling delicate control over the thickness of the liquid crystal (LC) layers. Stimuli‐responsive LCs endow structural colors with dynamic and reversible tunability and exhibit remarkable switching speeds with external stimuli. The proposed strategy sheds new light on dynamically tunable structural colors and promotes the development of optical anti‐counterfeiting, thermal sensors, and advanced information encryption.
