Abstract:The combination of a pulsed supersonic slit-discharge source and single-mode difference frequency direct absorption infrared spectroscopy permit first high resolution infrared study of the iodomethyl (CH2I) radical, with the CH2I radical species generated in a slit jet Ne/He discharge and cooled to 16 K in the supersonic expansion. Dual laser beam detection and collisional collimation in the slit expansion yield sub-Doppler linewidths (60 MHz), an absolute frequency calibration of 13 MHz, and absorbance sensitivities within a factor of two of the shot-noise limit. Fully rovibrationally resolved direct absorption spectra of the CH2 symmetric stretch mode (ν2) are obtained and fitted to a Watson asymmetric top Hamiltonian with electron spin-rotation coupling, providing precision rotational constants and spin-rotation tensor elements for the vibrationally excited state. Analysis of the asymmetric top rotational constants confirms a vibrationally averaged planar geometry in both the ground- and first-excited vibrational levels. Sub-Doppler resolution permits additional nuclear spin hyperfine structures to be observed, with splittings in excellent agreement with microwave measurements on the ground state. Spectroscopic data on CH2I facilitate systematic comparison with previous studies of halogen-substituted methyl radicals, with the periodic trends strongly correlated with the electronegativity of the halogen atom. Interestingly, we do not observe any asymmetric CH2 stretch transitions, despite S/N ≈ 25:1 on strongest lines in the corresponding symmetric CH2 stretch manifold. This dramatic reversal of the more typical 3:1 antisymmetric/symmetric CH2 stretch intensity ratio signals a vibrational transition moment poorly described by simple "bond-dipole" models. Instead, the data suggest that this anomalous intensity ratio arises from "charge sloshing" dynamics in the highly polar carbon-iodine bond, as supported by ab initio electron differential density plots and indeed consistent with observations in other halomethyl radicals and protonated cluster ions.

Abstract:Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) excitation spectrum of gas-phase dichlorocarbene (CCl2) cooled in a supersonic free jet has been observed in the wavelength range of 497-517 nm. The K-structure was clearly resolved. About 80 subbands were assigned to (upsilon-1, upsilon-2 0) <-- (0, 0, 0) vibronic transitions. The vibrational frequencies of nu-'1 = 643.5 cm-1, nu-'2 = 308.0 cm-1 and their anharmonic constants were obtained. Furthermore, the rotational data A' - B' = 3.67 cm-1, A" - B" = 1.80 cm-1 were deduced from the spectral analysis.
Formation Mechanism and Spectroscopy of C6H Radicals in Extreme Environments: a Theoretical Study.

Abstract:This study examined the reaction mechanisms of singlet (rhombic) and triplet (linear) C4 with acetylene by using accurate ab initio CCSD(T)/CBS//B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) calculations followed by a kinetic analysis of various reaction pathways and computations of relative product yields in combustion and planetary atmospheres. These calculations were combined with the Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations of reaction rate constants for predicting product-branching ratios, which depend on the collision energy under single-collision conditions. The results demonstrate that the initial reaction begins with the formation of an intermediate 3i2 with an entrance barrier of 3.0 kcal mol-1 and an intermediate 1i1 without entrance barriers. The product-branching ratios obtained by solving kinetic equations with individual rate constants calculated using the RRKM and variational transition-state theories for determining the collision energies between 5 kcal mol-1 and 25 kcal mol-1 demonstrate that l-C6H + H is the dominant reaction product, whereas HC3C3 + H, l-C6 + H2, c-C6H + H, and c-C6 + H2 are minor products. The electronic absorption spectra of solid neon matrices in the range of 17 140-22 200 cm-1 were obtained by Maier et al., and the optimized ground and excited state structures of C6H were used to simulate the absorption spectra by one-photon excitation equations. The displaced harmonic oscillator approximation and the Franck-Condon approximation were used to simulate the absorption spectrum of the B2Π ← X2Π transition of C6H. This indicates that the vibronic structures were dominated by one of the six active completely symmetric modes, with v3 being the most crucial.

Abstract:The XC ReX3 complexes (X = F, Cl) are produced by CX4 reaction with laser-ablated Re atoms, following oxidative C-X insertion and alpha-halogen migration in favor of the carbon-metal triple bond and are identified through the observation of characteristic absorptions in the argon matrix infrared spectra and comparison with vibrational frequencies calculated by density functional theory. The methylidyne C-F and C-Cl stretching absorptions are observed near 1584 and 1328 cm(-1), and the C-H stretching modes for HC ReX3 at 3104 and 3097 cm(-1), respectively, which are substantially higher than the precursor stretching modes and in agreement with the general trend that higher s-orbital character in carbon hybridization leads to a higher stretching frequency. The Jahn-Teller effect in the doublet-state XC ReX3 and HC ReX3 complexes gives rise to distorted structures with C-S symmetry and two equivalent longer Re-X bonds and one slightly shorter Re-X bond.

Abstract:The rovibrational spectrum of the molecular ion H$_2$CCCH$^+$ was investigated in a 4~K cryogenic ion trap instrument employing the leak-out spectroscopy method. Transitions within the fundamental $\nu_1$ (C-H stretch) and the combination band $\nu_3$+$\nu_5$ (C-C stretches) were detected, the search aided by high level quantum chemical calculations. The analysis of the rovibrational measurements enabled us to predict the rotational structure of the ground state. Using a rotational-vibrational double-resonance scheme, 14 pure rotational transitions were measured. This, in turn, led to the radio astronomical detection of H$_2$CCCH$^+$ in the interstellar medium, as recently reported (Silva et al., Astron. Astrophys. 676, L1, 2023).

Abstract:We report the development of a very sensitive laser technique for measuring the vibrational motions in van der Waals bonds. This new technique has been used to detect the lowest perpendicular bending vibration in ArHCl near 35 cm−1 with signal-to-noise ratios ≥104 and with resolution of nuclear hyperfine structure. A total of 80 Stark-hyperfine components of the R(0), Q(1), Q(2), rotational lines have been measured with a precision of ≤1 MHz and analyzed by least squares techniques to obtain precise values for the vibrational band origin [ν0=1018 731.20(31) MHz], the dipole moment [μ′=0.260 26(11) D], the effective rotational constant [(B′+C′)/2=1696.70(22) MHz], the l-type doubling constant [ql =−50.90(35) MHz], and the 35Cl quadrupole coupling constants [eqQ′aa=−6.5(4.1) MHz, eqQ′bb−eqQ′ cc=−74.4(2.2) MHz] in the excited perpendicular (l=±1) bending state. Interpretation of these constants indicates a strongly bent average geometry (θ>51°) for the excited state. These measurements strongly support the results obtained from empirical potential surfaces by Hutson, and Howard and Hutson.

Abstract:Hydrogen chloride (HCl) is a key repository of chlorine in the interstellar medium. Accurate determinations of its abundance are critical to assessing the chlorine elemental abundance and constraining stellar nucleosynthesis models. To aid in modeling recent and future observations of HCl rovibrational spectra, we present cross sections and rate coefficients for collisions between HCl and molecular hydrogen. Transitions between rovibrational states of HCl are considered for temperatures ranging from 10 to 3000 K. Cross sections are computed using a full dimensional quantum close-coupling (CC) method and a reduced dimensionality coupled-states (CS) approach. The CS results, benchmarked against the CC results, are used with a recoupling approach to calculate hyperfine-resolved rate coefficients for rovibrational transitions of HCl induced by H 2 . The rate coefficients will allow for a better determination of the HCl abundance in the interstellar medium and an improved understanding of interstellar chlorine chemistry. We demonstrate the utility of the new rate coefficients in a nonthermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer model applied to observations of HCl rovibrational transitions in a circumstellar shell.

Abstract:Two fundamental halocarbon ions, CH2Cl+ and CH3ClH+, were studied in the gas phase using the FELion 22-pole ion trap apparatus and the Free Electron Laser for Infrared eXperiments (FELIX) at Radboud University, Nijmegen (the Netherlands). The vibrational bands of a total of four isotopologs, CH235,37Cl+ and CH335,37ClH+, were observed in selected wavenumber regions between 500 and 2900 cm−1 and then spectroscopically assigned based on the results of anharmonic force field calculations performed at the CCSD(T) level of theory. As the infrared photodissociation spectroscopy scheme employed probes singly Ne-tagged weakly bound complexes, complementary quantum-chemical calculations of selected species were also performed. The impact of tagging on the vibrational spectra of CH2Cl+ and CH3ClH+ is found to be virtually negligible for most bands; for CH3ClH+–Ne, the observations suggest a proton-bound structural arrangement. The experimental band positions as well as the best estimate rotational molecular parameters given in this work provide a solid basis for future spectroscopic studies at high spectral resolutions.

Abstract:The chloroniumyl cation, HCl$^+$, has been recently identified in space from Herschel's spectra. A joint analysis of extensive vis-UV spectroscopy emission data together with a few high resolution and high accuracy mm-wave data provided the necessary rest frequencies to support the astronomical identification. Nevertheless, the analysis did not include any infrared vibration-rotation data. Furthermore, with the end of the Herschel mission, infrared observations from ground may be one of the few available means to further study this ion in space. In this work we provide a set of accurate rovibrational transition wavenumbers as well as a new and improved global fit of vis-UV, IR and mm-wave spectroscopy laboratory data, that will aid in future studies of this molecule.

Abstract:Ro-vibrational spectra of the $\nu_3$ and $\nu_6$ bands of chloromethane ($\mathrm{CH_3Cl}$) were recorded in the 650--1130 $\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$ range using a Fourier transform spectrometer at the AILES beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron facility. Two isotopologues ($\mathrm{CH_3^{35}Cl}$ and $\mathrm{CH_3^{37}Cl}$) have been analyzed with the tensorial formalism developed in Dijon and a total of 6753 lines were assigned. We derived 23 tensorial parameters for the lines positions (4 for the ground state, 6 for $\nu_3$, and 13 for $\nu_6$), and 7 for the lines intensities (4 for $\nu_3$, 3 for $\nu_6$). From those parameters and self-broadening coefficients found in the literature, we simulated spectra of both isotopologues. The derived parameters were converted in the Watson formalism to be compared with a previous study. Using these results, we set up a new database of calculated chloromethane spectral lines (ChMeCaSDa).

Abstract:Gas-phase cyclobutyl radical (c-C 4 H 7 ) is generated at a rotational temperature of T rot = 26(1) K in a slit-jet discharge mixture of 70% Ne/30% He and 0.5–0.6% cyclobromobutane (c-C 4 H 7 Br). A fully rovibrationally resolved absorption spectrum of the α-CH stretch fundamental band between 3062.9 cm −1 to 3075.7 cm −1 is obtained and analyzed, yielding first precision structural and dynamical information for this novel radical species. The α-CH stretch band origin is determined to be 3068.7887(4) cm −1 , which implies only a modest (≈0.8 cm −1 ) blue shift from rotationally unresolved infrared spectroscopic studies of cyclobutyl radicals in liquid He droplets [ A. R. Brown, P. R. Franke and G. E. Douberly, J. Phys. Chem. A , 2017, 121 , 7576–7587]. Of particular dynamical interest, a one-dimensional potential energy surface with respect to the ring puckering coordinate is computed at CCSD(T)/ANO2 level of theory and reveals a double minimum C s puckered geometry, separated by an exceedingly shallow planar C 2v transition state barrier ( E barr ≈ 1 cm −1 ). Numerical solutions on this double minimum potential yield a zero-point energy for the ground state ( E zero-point ≈ 27 cm −1 ) greatly in excess of the interconversion barrier. This is indicative of highly delocalized, large amplitude motion of the four-membered ring structure, for which proper vibrationally averaging of the moment of inertia tensor reproduces the experimentally determined inertial defect remarkably well. Finally, intensity alternation in the experimental spectrum due to nuclear spin statistics upon exchange of three indistinguishable H atom pairs ( I H = 1⁄2) matches K a + K c = even : odd = 36 : 28 predictions, implying that the unpaired electron in the radical center lies in an out-of-plane p π orbital. Thus, high-resolution infrared spectroscopy provides first experimental confirmation of a shallow double minimum ring puckering potential with a highly delocalized ground state wave function peaked at a planar C 2v transition state geometry consistent with a cyclobutyl π radical.

Abstract:We report absolute high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption cross-sections of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in the photon energy range 5.0–10.8 eV (248–115 nm). The molecular spectrum and electronic structure have been comprehensively investigated together with quantum chemical calculations, providing geometries, bond lengths, vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The major electronic excitations have been assigned to valence and Rydberg transitions which are also accompanied by vibrational excitation assigned to degenerate stretching, and degenerate deformation modes. The rather complex nuclear dynamics along the degenerate deformation mode, , have been thoroughly investigated by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) method. The relevant Jahn–Teller distortion operative within the lowest-lying electronic excited-state is shown here for the first time in order to yield a weak absorption feature at 6.156 eV. Further calculations on the potential energy curves for the singlet excited-states along the C–Cl stretching coordinate show the relevance of efficient C–Cl bond excision.

Abstract:The carbon chain cations, HC2nO+ (n=3−6) are produced via a pulsed laser vaporization supersonic expansion ion source in the gas phase. Their infrared spectra are measured via mass-selected infrared photodissociation spectroscopy of the CO “tagged” [HC2nO·CO]+ cation complexes in 1600–3500 cm−1 frequency range. The geometric and electronic structures of the [HC2nO·CO]+ complexes and the core HC2nO+ (n=3−6) cations are determined with the aid of density functional theory calculations. These HC2nO+(n=3−6) ions are identified to be linear carbon chain derivatives terminally capped by hydrogen and oxygen. The triplet ground states are 10−15 kcal/mol lower in energy than the singlet states, indicating cumulene-like carbon chain structures.
Measurement of Coherent Vibrational Dynamics with X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopy Simultaneously at the Carbon K- and Chlorine L$_{2,3}$- Edges

Abstract:X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopy near the carbon K-edge (1s, $\sim$ 285 eV) and chlorine L$_{2,3}$ edges (2p, $\sim$ 200 eV) is used to study the nuclear dynamics of CCl$_4$ vibrationally activated by impulsive stimulated Raman scattering with a few-cycle 800 nm pump pulse. The totally symmetric stretching mode leads to a strong response in the inner-shell spectra, with the concerted elongation (contraction) in bond lengths leading to a red (blue) shift in the X-ray absorption energies associated with core-to-antibonding excitations. The relative slopes of the potential energy surfaces associated with the relevant core-excited states along the symmetric stretching mode are experimentally measured and compared to results from restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham calculations. A combination of experiment and theory indicates that the slope of the core-excited potential energy surface vs totally symmetric bond elongation is $-11.1 \pm 0.8$ eV/Å for the Cl 2p$\to7a_1^*$ excitation, $-9.0\pm0.6$ eV/Å for the Cl 2p$\to8t_2^*$ excitation and $-5.2\pm 0.4$ eV/Å for the C 1s$\to8t_2^*$ excitation, to 95% confidence. The much larger slopes for the Cl 2p excitations compared to the C 1s state are attributed to greater contributions from Cl to the $7a_1^*$ or $8t_2^*$ antibonding orbitals to which the inner-shell electrons are being excited. No net displacement of the center of the vibrational wavefunction along the other vibrational modes is induced by the pump pulse, leading to absence of transient signal. The results highlight the ability of X-ray Transient Absorption Spectroscopy to reveal nuclear dynamics involving tiny ($<0.01$ Å) atomic displacements and also provide direct measurement of forces on core-excited potential energy surfaces.

Abstract:Aims. We would like to understand the chemistry of dense clouds and their hot cores more quantitatively by obtaining more complete knowledge of the chemical species present in them. Methods. We have obtained high-resolution infrared absorption spectroscopy at 3–4 μm toward the bright infrared source CRL 2136. Results. The fundamental vibration-rotation band of HCl has been detected within a dense cloud for the first time. The HCl is probably located in the warm compact circumstellar envelope or disk of CRL 2136. The fractional abundance of HCl is (4.9–8.7) × 10-8, indicating that approximately 20% of the elemental chlorine is in gaseous HCl. The kinetic temperature of the absorbing gas is 250 K, half the value determined from infrared spectroscopy of 13CO and H2O. The percentage of chlorine in HCl is approximately that expected for gas at this temperature. The reason for the difference in temperatures between the various molecular species is unknown.

Cavity Ring-down UV spectroscopy of the C$^2Σ^+$-X$^2Π$ electronic transition of CH

Abstract:Rotationally resolved spectra of the C$^2\Sigma^+$-X$^2\Pi$ electronic system of the CH radical were measured using cavity ring-down spectroscopy in supersonically expanding, planar hydrocarbon plasma. The experimental conditions allowed the study of highly excited rotational levels starting from vibrationally excited states. Here we present some 200+ new or more accurately recorded transitions in the 0-0, 1-1 and 2-2 vibronic bands in the ultraviolet between 30900-32400 cm$^{-1}$ (324-309 nm). The resulting data, compared to earlier measurements, allows for the determination of more precise molecular constants for each vibrational state and therefore more precise equilibrium values. From this an equilibrium bond length of 1.115798(17) Å for the C$^2{\Sigma}^+$ state is determined. A comprehensive list with observed transitions for each band has been compiled from all available experimental studies and constraints are placed on the predissociation lifetimes.

Abstract:Laser-induced fluorescence excitaion spectrum of gas-phase dichlocarbene (CC12) cooled in the supersonic jet has been observed in the range of 497-517 nm. The K-structrue of the (v1,v2,0)-(0,0,0) vibrational bands was resolved. About 80 su-bbands were assigned. v＇1= 643.5cm-1, v＇2 = 308.0cm-1 and the anharmonic costants, and (A＇-B＇) = 3.67cm-1, (A" - B") = 1.80cm-1 were obtained from the analysis of spectra.

Abstract:The one-color resonant two-photon ionization technique is employed to study jet-cooled van der Waals (vdW) clusters of halobenzene and nitrogen through the S0→S1 transition around the 0̄00 band. The spectra obtained exhibit rich information about the clusters’ intermolecular vdW vibrational modes and their solvent internal rotation. We have tentatively assigned all the observed spectral features to a single isomer of C6H5X⋅⋅⋅N2 (X=F, Cl, Br). The influence of X on the vdW vibrations and the internal rotation of N2 in the complex is investigated. The analysis of the influence of X on the 0̄00 spectral shift suggests that the change in vdW interaction energy upon electronic excitation is mainly due to the dispersion term.

Abstract:Geometry optimization and harmonic vibrational frequency calculations were performed on the (X) over tilde (1)A(1) state of CCl2 and (X) over tilde B-2(1) state of CCl2- at the B3LYP, MP2, CCSD levels. Franck-Condon analysis and spectral simulations were carried out on the photoelectron band of CCl2- including Duschinsky effects. The simulated spectra obtained are in excellent agreement with the experiment. Note that Duschinsky effect between bending vibration and the symmetric stretch modes should be considered in the CCl2 ((X) over tilde (1)A(1))-CCl2- ((X) over tilde B-2(1)) photodetachment process. By combining ab initio calculations with Franck-Condon analyses, the assignment of spectrum observed is firmly established to the (X) over tilde (1)A(1)-(X) over tilde B-2(1) photodetachment process of the CCl2- radical, and the recommended geometric parameters of which in the literature are confirmed again base on ab initio theory and IFCA process.
