Abstract:With the popularity of wearable devices, verifying the user identity of wearable devices is critical for system security, especially when performing sensitive operations such as financial payments. In this paper, we propose M-PPG, which uses photoplethysmography (PPG) measurements with motor vibrations to authenticate user identities. Specifically, our observations reveal a strong correlation between PPG measurements and users, such as the user’s heartbeat characteristics and wearing habits reflected by PPG measurements are implicitly associated with users’ identities, and the motor vibration provides stable excitation signals for better security performance. M-PPG requires zero user effort with a built-in sensor and actuator in most wearable devices, i.e., PPG sensor and motor. Additionally, we reveal that indoor lighting strobe noise is an unavoidable noise in PPG-based authentication methods, and a noise reduction mechanism is designed to mitigate such phenomenon. Moreover, a multiple authentication scheme and an adaptive update scheme are proposed to keep a long-term authentication in M-PPG. The experimental results among 20 participants demonstrate that M-PPG achieves an average accuracy of 94:5% in daily situations. With a well-designed authentication mechanism, the pass rate of legitimate users can reach 99:9%, while the pass rate of attackers is only 0:6%.

Abstract:Verifying the user identity of wearable devices is crucial for system security, especially for sensitive operations like making financial payments. A photoplethys-mography (PPG)-based two-factor authentication can be a promising solution with widely deployed PPG sensors within wearable devices. Our observations find PPG readings reveal a significant relevance to the user's hand motions, that is, gestures, while the user's heartbeat characteristics and wearing habits are also implicitly related, which can be utilized for user authentication. In this article, we design G-PPG, a gesture-related PPG-based two-factor authentication mechanism that can nonintrusively validate the user's identity. In G-PPG, a gesture detection and segmentation module and a specific feature set are designed for accurate gesture-related PPG characteristic extraction. Moreover, a user-defined security level and an adaptive update scheme are proposed for the high accuracy of long-term authentication. The experimental results among 15 participants demonstrate that G-PPG can achieve over 90% accuracy in different scenarios on average. With a carefully designed authentication mechanism, the pass rate for legitimate users can reach up to 96.67%, while the value is only 0.62% for attackers.

Abstract:Wearable devices have flourished over the past ten years providing great advantages to people and, recently, they have also been used for identity authentication. Most of the authentication methods adopt a one-time authentication manner which cannot provide continuous certification. To address this issue, we present a two-step authentication method based on an own-built fingertip sensor device which can capture motion data (e.g., acceleration and angular velocity) and physiological data (e.g., a photoplethysmography (PPG) signal) simultaneously. When the device is worn on the user's fingertip, it will automatically recognize whether the wearer is a legitimate user or not. More specifically, multisensor data is collected and analyzed to extract representative and intensive features. Then, human activity recognition is applied as the first step to enhance the practicability of the authentication system. After correctly discriminating the motion state, a one-class machine learning algorithm is applied for identity authentication as the second step. When a user wears the device, the authentication process is carried on automatically at set intervals. Analyses were conducted using data from 40 individuals across various operational scenarios. Extensive experiments were executed to examine the effectiveness of the proposed approach, which achieved an average accuracy rate of 98.5% and an F1-score of 86.67%. Our results suggest that the proposed scheme provides a feasible and practical solution for authentication.
On the Feasibility of Non-contact Cardiac Motion Sensing for Emerging Heart-Based Biometrics

Abstract:Cryptographic security is of great importance. Biometrics play a vital role in modern authentication systems. Among all emerging biometrics, heart-based biometrics are promising because they are unique and hard to counterfeit. The current solutions on cardiac motion detection are either obtrusive or incapable of providing comprehensive cardiac motion information. To this end, we present Non-contact Cardiac Motion Sensing (NCMS), an end-to-end hardware and software solution, to sense and characterize the cardiac motion in a continuous, unobtrusive and user-friendly manner. We evaluate the performance of NCMS and compare the cardiac motion cycle on human subjects. Experimental results indicate the feasibility of NCMS to detect the cardiac motion and show the concept of a new modality in emerging heart-based biometrics.
Brain Password: A Secure and Truly Cancelable Brain Biometrics for Smart Headwear.

Abstract:In recent years, biometric techniques (e.g., fingerprint or iris) are increasingly integrated into mobile devices to offer security advantages over traditional practices (e.g., passwords and PINs) due to their ease of use in user authentication. However, existing biometric systems are with controversy: once divulged, they are compromised forever - no one can grow a new fingerprint or iris. This work explores a truly cancelable brain-based biometric system for mobile platforms (e.g., smart headwear). Specifically, we present a new psychophysiological protocol via non-volitional brain response for trustworthy mobile authentication, with an application example of smart headwear. Particularly, we address the following research challenges in mobile biometrics with a theoretical and empirical combined manner: (1) how to generate reliable brain responses with sophisticated visual stimuli; (2) how to acquire the distinct brain response and analyze unique features in the mobile platform; (3) how to reset and change brain biometrics when the current biometric credential is divulged. To evaluate the proposed solution, we conducted a pilot study and achieved an f -score accuracy of 95.46% and equal error rate (EER) of 2.503%, thereby demonstrating the potential feasibility of neurofeedback based biometrics for smart headwear. Furthermore, we perform the cancelability study and the longitudinal study, respectively, to show the effectiveness and usability of our new proposed mobile biometric system. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first in-depth research study on truly cancelable brain biometrics for secure mobile authentication.
WristAuthen: A Dynamic Time Wrapping Approach for User Authentication by Hand-Interaction through Wrist-Worn Devices

Abstract:The growing trend of using wearable devices for context-aware computing and pervasive sensing systems has raised its potentials for quick and reliable authentication techniques. Since personal writing habitats differ from each other, it is possible to realize user authentication through writing. This is of great significance as sensible information is easily collected by these devices. This paper presents a novel user authentication system through wrist-worn devices by analyzing the interaction behavior with users, which is both accurate and efficient for future usage. The key feature of our approach lies in using much more effective Savitzky-Golay filter and Dynamic Time Wrapping method to obtain fine-grained writing metrics for user authentication. These new metrics are relatively unique from person to person and independent of the computing platform. Analyses are conducted on the wristband-interaction data collected from 50 users with diversity in gender, age, and height. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed approach can identify users in a timely and accurate manner, with a false-negative rate of 1.78\%, false-positive rate of 6.7\%, and Area Under ROC Curve of 0.983 . Additional examination on robustness to various mimic attacks, tolerance to training data, and comparisons to further analyze the applicability.

Abstract:Existing security issues like keys, pins, and passwords employed presently in almost all the fields that have certain limitations like passwords and pins can be easily forgotten; keys can be lost. To overcome such security issues, new biometric features have shown outstanding improvements in authentication systems as a result of significant developments in biological digital signal processing. Currently, the multimodal authentications have gained huge attention in biometric systems which can be either behavioural or physiological. A biometric system with multimodality club data from many biometric modalities increases each biometric system's performance and makes it more resistant to spoof attempts. Apart from electrocardiogram (ECG) and iris, there are a lot of other biometric traits that can be captured from the human body. They include face, fingerprint, gait, keystroke dynamics, voice, DNA, palm vein, and hand geometry recognition. Electrocardiograms (ECG) have recently been employed in unimodal and multimodal biometric recognition systems as a novel biometric technology. When compared to other biometric approaches, ECG has the intrinsic quality of a person's liveness, making it difficult to fake. Similarly, the iris also plays an important role in biometric authentication. Based on these assumptions, we present a multimodal biometric person authentication system. The projected method includes preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction, feature fusion, and ensemble classifier where majority voting is presented to obtain the final outcome. The comparative analysis shows the overall performance as 96.55%, 96.2%, 96.2%, 96.5%, and 95.65% in terms of precision, F1‐score, sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy.

Abstract:Human cutaneous sensory organ is a highly evolved biosensor that is efficient, sensitive, selective, and adaptable. Recently, with the developing various materials and structures inspired by sensory organs, artificial cutaneous sensors have been widely studied. In this study, we demonstrated the acquisition of biophysical signals at one point on the body using a wearable all-gel-integrated multimodal sensor composed of four element sensors, inspired by the slow/rapid adapting functions of the skin sensory receptors. The gel-type sensors ensure flexibility, compactness, portability, adherence, and integrity. The wearable all-gel multimodal sensor was easily attached to the wrist and simultaneously gathered blood pressure (BP), electrocardiogram (ECG), electromyogram (EMG), and mechanomyogram (MMG) signals related to cardiac and muscle health. Human activity causes muscle contraction, which affects blood flow; therefore, the relationship between the muscle and heart is crucial for screening and predicting heart health. We monitored cardiac health by obtaining the two types of phase time differences (i.e., Δtbe: BP and ECG, Δtem: ECG and MMG) generated during muscle movement. Towards Nonintrusive and Secure Mobile Two-Factor Authentication on Wearables

Abstract:Mobile devices are promising to apply two-factor authentication to improve system security. Existing solutions have certain limits of requiring extra user effort, which might seriously affect user experience and delay authentication time. In this paper, we propose PPGPass, a novel mobile two-factor authentication system, which leverages Photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors available in most wrist-worn wearables. PPGPass simultaneously performs a password/pattern/signature authentication and a physiological-based authentication. To realize both nonintrusive and secure, we design a two-stage algorithm to separate clean heartbeat signals from PPG signals contaminated by motion artifacts so that users do not have to deliberately keep their bodies still. In addition, to deal with noncancelable issues when biometrics are compromised, we design a repeatable and non-invertible method to generate cancelable feature templates as alternative credentials. We leverage the great power of Random Forest and Support Vector Data Description to detect adversaries and verify a user's identity. To the best of our knowledge, PPGPass is the first nonintrusive and secure mobile two-factor authentication based on PPG sensors. Extensive experiments demonstrate that PPGPass can achieve the false acceptance rate of 3.11% and the false recognition rate of 3.71%, which confirms its high effectiveness, security, and usability.

Abstract:Multi-modal biometric schemes, which leverage more than one sensor, offer significant advantages over uni-modal schemes in terms of accuracy and robustness against attacks. In this paper, we present a novel behavioral multi-biometric user authentication scheme that employs data fusion for biometric-based authentication. The proposed scheme extracts two types of data (Electromyography (EMG) and movements) from a single user's clapping action type, via a worn smartwatch. During the user enrollment phase, the scheme creates a digital identity of the user based on the arm's movement and EMG signatures generated through the entire period of clapping action. In the verification phase, the scheme authenticates users based on the detected combined EMG and movement signature. The experimental analysis of the proposed scheme employing a Deep Neural Network classifier demonstrates its efficacy; our classifier achieves a True Accept Rate of 94.37%, a False Accept Rate of just 0.11%, and an accuracy of 97.13%. Furthermore, it is experimentally demonstrated that augmenting the training dataset via Generative Adversarial Networks leads to even better performance; with improved TAR (up to %) and accuracy (up to 97.94%), while decreasing FAR (from 0.11% to 0.082%). These results showcase the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed bi-modal behavioral biometric scheme for smartwatch user authentication.

Modeling Multimodal Biometric Modalities For Continuous User Authentication

Abstract:Continuous authentication offers the ability to continuously verify users' identity for accessing to the protected resource. Although current explorations such as face and fingerprint verification have seen varying rates of success, three main problems may limit their applicability in the context of information protection and access control: they can be of low availability in some practical scenarios, they can be intrusive, and they commonly require costly equipment. This paper presents a multimodal biometrics authentication system that can continuously verify the presence of a logged-in user. Three passive biometric modalities are currently used - keystroke (i.e., behavioral biometric), face (i.e., physiological biometric), and skin color (i.e., soft biometric) - but our approach can also be readily extended to include more modalities. By fusing these three passive biometrics, the continuous authentication system combines both temporal and modality information holistically, and can keep verifying who is using the computing system, without troubling users' routine activities. Based on real data resulting from our implementation, we find the results to be very promising with a false-acceptance rate of 0% and a false-rejection rate of 0.72%. Additional experiment on the size of observation window is provided to further examine the applicability of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Samples were collected during the winter of 1984—1985 in the cities of Albuquerque, NM and Raleigh NC as part of a US Environmental Protection Agency study to evaluate methods to determine the emission sources contributing to the mutagenic properties of extractable organic matter (EOM) present in fine particles. Data derived from the analysis of the composition of these fine particles served as input to a multi-linear regression (MLR) model used to calculate the relative contribution of wood burning and motor vehicle sources to mutagenic activity observed in the extractable organic matter. At both sites the mutagenic potency of EOM was found to be greater (3—5 times) for mobile sources when compared to wood smoke extractable organics. Carbon-14 measurements which give a direct determination of the amount of EOM that originated from wood burning were in close agreement with the source apportionment results derived from the MLR model.

Abstract:Over the past several years, the electrocardiogram (ECG) has been investigated for its uniqueness and potential to discriminate between individuals. This paper discusses how this discriminatory information can help in continuous user authentication by a wearable chest strap which uses dry electrodes to obtain a single lead ECG signal. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first such work which deals with continuous authentication using a genuine wearable device as most prior works have either used medical equipment employing gel electrodes to obtain an ECG signal or have obtained an ECG signal through electrode positions that would not be feasible using a wearable device. Prior works have also mainly dealt with using the ECG signal for identification rather than verification, or dealt with using the ECG signal for discrete authentication. This paper presents a novel algorithm which uses QRS detection, weighted averaging, Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), and a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier to determine whether the wearer of the device should be positively verified or not. Zero intrusion attempts were successful when tested on a database consisting of 33 subjects.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) is increasingly empowering people with an interconnected world of physical objects ranging from smart buildings to portable smart devices such as wearables. With recent advances in mobile sensing, wearables have become a rich collection of portable sensors and are able to provide various types of services including tracking of health and fitness, making financial transactions, and unlocking smart locks and vehicles. Most of these services are delivered based on users' confidential and personal data, which are stored on these wearables. Existing explicit authentication approaches (i.e., PINs or pattern locks) for wearables suffer from several limitations, including small or no displays, risk of shoulder surfing, and users' recall burden. Oftentimes, users completely disable security features out of convenience. Therefore, there is a need for a burden-free (implicit) authentication mechanism for wearable device users based on easily obtainable biometric data. In this paper, we present an implicit wearable device user authentication mechanism using combinations of three types of coarse-grain minute-level biometrics: behavioral (step counts), physiological (heart rate), and hybrid (calorie burn and metabolic equivalent of task). From our analysis of over 400 Fitbit users from a 17-month long health study, we are able to authenticate subjects with average accuracy values of around .93 (sedentary) and .90 (non-sedentary) with equal error rates of .05 using binary SVM classifiers. Our findings also show that the hybrid biometrics perform better than other biometrics and behavioral biometrics do not have a significant impact, even during non-sedentary periods.

Abstract:Building safeguards against illegitimate access and authentication is a cornerstone for securing systems. Existing user authentication schemes suffer from challenges in detecting impersonation attacks which leave systems vulnerable and susceptible to misuse. A range of research proposals have suggested continuous multimodal biometric authentication (CMBA) systems as a reliable solution. Though contemporary authentication systems have the potential to change their current authentication scheme, there is a lack of critical analysis of current progress in the field to foster and influence practical solutions. This paper provides a systematic survey of existing literature on CMBA systems, followed by analysis to identify and discuss current research and future trends. The study has found that many diverse biometric characteristics are used for multimodal biometric authentication systems. The majority of the studies in the literature reviewed apply supervised learning approaches as a classification technique, and score level fusion is predominantly used as a fusion model. The review has determined however that there is a lack of comparative analysis on CMBA design in terms of combinations of biometric types (behavioural only, physiological only, or both), machine learning algorithms (unsupervised learning and semi-supervised learning), and fusion models. Most of the studies evaluated a CMBA system's accuracy functionality, such as False Acceptance Rate (FAR), False Rejection Rate (FRR) and Equal Error Rate (EER). However, security, scalability and usability (user acceptance and satisfaction) are generally not addressed thoroughly even though these are key factors for system success in a real deployment. Furthermore, a CMBA system should be implemented and evaluated extensively on real data without restriction to prove that such systems are feasible.

Multichannel Acoustic Spectroscopy of the Human Body for Inviolable Biometric Authentication

Abstract:Specific features of the human body, such as fingerprint, iris, and face, are extensively used in biometric authentication. Conversely, the internal structure and material features of the body have not been explored extensively in biometrics. Bioacoustics technology is suitable for extracting information about the internal structure and biological and material characteristics of the human body. Herein, we report a biometric authentication method that enables multichannel bioacoustic signal acquisition with a systematic approach to study the effects of selectively distilled frequency features, increasing the number of sensing channels with respect to multiple fingers. The accuracy of identity recognition according to the number of sensing channels and the number of selectively chosen frequency features was evaluated using exhaustive combination searches and forward-feature selection. The technique was applied to test the accuracy of machine learning classification using 5,232 datasets from 54 subjects. By optimizing the scanning frequency and sensing channels, our method achieved an accuracy of 99.62%, which is comparable to existing biometric methods. Overall, the proposed biometric method not only provides an unbreakable, inviolable biometric but also can be applied anywhere in the body and can substantially broaden the use of biometrics by enabling continuous identity recognition on various body parts for biometric identity authentication.

Abstract:Measuring the physical, physiological, behavioral, or chemical characteristics of an individual as biometrics for personal identification has attracted increasing attention in smart environment applications. Noncancelability and cross-application invariance are two flaws of traditional DNA, face, and fingerprint-based biometrics because users cannot volitionally change the biometric template. In this work, we acquired high-density surface electromyogram (HD-sEMG) signals encoded by gesture passwords as biometrics. The different sEMG patterns under different motor tasks allow users to enroll multiple accounts using sEMG under different hand gestures as biometrics. By simply changing to a new gesture password, users can cancel the original template once it is compromised. Even if impostors enter the correct gesture password, the individual differences of HD-sEMG as the second defense can still achieve excellent performance. To improve the current state-of-the-art identification accuracy, we acquired 256-channel forearm HD-sEMG and decoded high-resolution neuromuscular information in temporal–spectral–spatial domain. We achieved a high identification accuracy of 99.85% on a 200-account (20 subjects accounts per subject) recognition task, with training and testing data acquired 3 to 25 days apart. Moreover, to address the concern of "unknown identities," we applied an "authentication + identification" validation, achieving high accuracy of 93.81% on a 200-account [(16 enrolled subjects +4 unknown subjects) accounts per subject] task. Our work substantially improves the current state-of-the-art accuracy for cross-day s- MG biometric identification (improved from % to >99% with a similar number of identified classes).

Abstract:Granulocyte apoptosis is a crucial part of the successful resolution of inflammation. In vitro results show that activation of NF-kappaB (nuclear factor kappaB) in granulocytes is a survival mechanism. NF-kappaB inhibitors increase the rate of constitutive apoptosis in neutrophils and eosinophils and cause these cells to respond to the pro-apoptotic effects of TNF-alpha (tumour necrosis factor-alpha). Results from both in vivo and in vitro experiments suggest that there are at least two important waves of NF-kappaB activation in inflammatory loci, which increase the expression of COX-2 (cyclooxygenase-2), itself an NF-kappaB controlled gene. The first wave causes the production of inflammatory mediators such as PGE2 (prostaglandin E2), allowing the establishment of inflammation. The second wave causes the synthesis of PGD2 and its metabolites that induce granulocyte apoptosis by inhibiting NF-kappaB activation. These metabolites may therefore be important physiological mediators controlling the resolution of inflammation. Although NF-kappaB is an important target for anti-inflammatory therapy, the timing of inhibition in vivo may be crucial, to ensure that production of PGD2 and its sequential metabolites can occur.
