Study on College Students' Experience About MOOC-Based Flipped Classroom Practice--Based on the Analysis of 231 Online Learning Diaries

Abstract:MOOCs and flipped classroom practice have become hot topics in educational research area and more and more researchers have carried out studies related to the experience of faculty members and students with MOOCs and flipped classroom. To better understand college students' experience about MOOCs and to experiment new methods of classroom teaching in universities, this study attempted to apply MOOC-based flipped classroom practice to an undergraduate course named Internet and Distance Education and carried out in the College of Education at Zhejiang University. Qualitative research method was utilized in the study. The collected 231 online learning diaries were analyzed by NVivo 8 from five dimensions: learners, teachers, curriculum, technology and environment. Diary analysis found that students have not only experienced rich emotional changes during the MOOC-based flipped classroom practice, but also have they improved knowledge, perspectives, skills and their metacognitive abilities; in terms of interaction preference, students preferred to choose face-to-face discussion instead of online asynchronous interaction; the instructor's guidance and encouragement were very important for students' positive and successful online learning experience; multiple evaluation formats allowed students to understand that the learning process was more important than the final scores. Although students like such features as flexibility, autonomy and diversity in the MOOC-based flipped classroom practice, some problems were also mentioned in students' diaries, like the annoying network firewall, the boring course videos, the language barriers and so on. Based on above findings, the requirements for such innovational classroom practice were summarized:better technical support and guarantee, the role transformation of instructors and learners, diversified activities and evaluation design and creation of interactive learning environment.

Abstract:About 21% of the U.S. population ages 5 and older speaks a language other than English at home, and many of them cannot communicate in English fluently. A possible intervention to improve health literacy for people with limited English proficiency is the use of an English as a second language curriculum. The purpose of this systematic review is to assess the characteristics (e.g., theoretical framework, developing processes, classroom activities, goals and topics) and effectiveness of English as a second language health literacy curricula that are currently available in English-dominant countries. We searched the online databases of ERIC, Sage, Springer, PubMed, Medline, and Scopus, identifying 7 curricula within 18 published reports. We synthesize the strengths and weaknesses of the reviewed curricula and provide recommendations for improving future health literacy interventions and research.

Abstract:This study focuses on developing and evaluating an online course aimed at preschool educators and primary school teachers. It presents a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on computational thinking, programming and robotics developed as part of the project "Laboratory for Technology and Programming and Robotics Learning in Primary and Preschool Education in Portugal (KML II)" The MOOC design was inspired by a blended learning model used in teacher professional development at the project's inception and incorporates theoretical-pedagogical models of MOOC design as well as theoretical models of online interaction in virtual educational environments. The course will be offered on the NAU platform, a Portuguese MOOC platform. A pilot test was conducted with a purposive sample that included both participants from the target audience of the course as well as national and international experts specialised in these domains. The evaluation included a Likert scale questionnaire survey and open-ended questions. The results aim to validate the MOOC's quality, including its structure, content relevance, proposed activities, and learning design. The findings provide evidence to improve the final version of the MOOC, contributing to its effectiveness and adequacy to the target audience.

Abstract:Background Massive open online courses have the potential to enable dissemination of essential components of quality improvement learning. Subsequent to conducting the massive open online course ‘Take the Lead on Healthcare Quality Improvement’, this paper is a report of the evaluation of the course’s effectiveness in increasing healthcare professionals’ quality improvement knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy and systems thinking. Methods Using the Kirkpatrick model for evaluation, a pretest–posttest design was employed to measure quality improvement knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy and systems thinking. Interprofessional learners across the globe enrolled in the 5-week online course that consisted of 10 modules (short theory bursts, assignments and assessments). The objective of the course was to facilitate learners’ completion of a personal or clinical project. Of the 5751 learners enrolled, 1415 completed the demographic survey, and 88 completed all the surveys, assignments and assessments. This paper focuses on the 88 who completed the course. Results There was a significant 14% increase in knowledge, a 3.5% increase in positive attitude, a 3.9% increase in systems thinking and a 21% increase in self-efficacy. Learners were very satisfied with the course (8.9/10). Conclusions Learners who completed the course ‘Take the Lead on Healthcare Quality Improvement’ had significant gains in learner outcomes: quality improvement knowledge, attitude, self-efficacy and systems thinking supporting this course format’s efficacy in improving key components of students’ quality improvement capabilities.

Abstract:Massive open online courses (MOOCs) have been the subject of much polarised debate around their potential to transform higher education in terms of opening access. Although MOOCs have been attracting large learner cohorts, concerns have emerged from the early evidence base centring upon issues of quality in learning and teaching provision, and there is clear evidence that impressive headline figures on MOOC enrolments often contrast with extremely low course completion rates. To address these concerns of quality, low retention and the need for engagement, this paper provides a review and case study of MOOC provision. The review considers the current position of MOOCs as a change agent for higher education provision, and the case study considers lessons learnt from an Astronomy MOOC which uses the Open2Study platform. This paper asks about new engagement strategies needed for face‐to‐face and online learners, and explores how course retention can be improved in online provision.

Abstract:Introduction: COVID-19 created a global need for healthcare worker (HCW) training. Initially, mass trainings focused on public health workers and physicians working in intensive care units. However, in resource-constrained settings, nurses and general practitioners provide most patient care, typically lacking the training and equipment to manage critically ill patients. We developed a massive open online course (MOOC) for HCWs in resource-constrained settings aimed at training bedside providers caring for COVID-19 patients. We describe the development, implementation and analysis of this MOOC. Methods: From May through June 2020, the course was developed by a multi-disciplinary team and launched on two online platforms in July. The 4-hour course comprises 6 video-based modules. Student knowledge was assessed using pre- and post-module quizzes and final exam, while demographics and user experience were evaluated by pre- and post-course surveys and learning platform data. Results: From July 17th to September 24th, 30,859 students enrolled, 18,818 started, and 7,101 completed the course. Most participants worked in healthcare (78%) and resided in lower middle- (38%) or upper middle- (20%) income countries. Learners from upper middle-income and lower middle-income countries had higher completion rates. Knowledge gains were observed from pre-module to post-module quizzes and a final exam. Afterward, participants reported increased self-efficacy regarding course objectives, a 0.63 mean increase on a 4-point scale (95% CI [0.60,0.66]). Most participants (93%) would recommend the course to others. Conclusion: This article demonstrates the potential of MOOCs to rapidly provide access to emerging medical knowledge during a public health crisis, particularly for HCWs in high- and middle-income countries.
Is peer review an appropriate form of assessment in a MOOC? Student participation and performance in formative peer review

Abstract:Many aspects of higher education must be reconceptualised for massive open online courses (MOOCs). Formative and summative assessment of qualitative work in particular requires novel approaches to cope with the numbers involved. Peer review has been proposed as one solution, and has been widely adopted by major MOOC providers, but there is currently little evidence about whether it is appropriate or under what conditions. Here, we examine student participation, performance and opinions of a peer review task in a biomedical science MOOC. We evaluate data from approximately 200 student topic summaries and 300 qualitative peer reviews of those summaries, and compare these to student demographic data (gender, age, employment status, education, national language) and to performance in multiple choice tests. We show that higher performance in the written topic summary correlated with both higher participation in the peer review task and with writing higher quality peer reviews. Qualitative analysis of student comments revealed that student opinion on the usefulness of the peer review task was mixed: some strongly believed it benefitted their learning, while others did not find it useful or did not participate. We suggest instructional design strategies to improve student participation and increase learning gain from peer review in the MOOC context.

Abstract:The study focused on the development and evaluation of an online course in the massive open online courses (MOOC) environment, specifically targeting science and mathematics education. The goal was to utilize pedagogical design principles, particularly those derived from the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model, to create an effective learning experience for students in different years of study. The online course was hosted on the edX platform, which is a popular platform for MOOCs. The assessment of the online course covered various criteria: interface, interaction, and design. The criteria of interface, interaction, and design received high marks from students of the two groups. The study found that the participants were highly engaged during the training, which is a positive outcome. The analysis of interest in online learning among first- and fourth-year students shows that first-year students had an average level of interest in online learning of 4.50 with a standard deviation of 0.32. Fourth-year students had an average level of interest of 4.45 with a slightly larger standard deviation of 0.41. Student engagement is an important factor in effective learning, as it reflects their active involvement and motivation in the learning process.

Abstract:Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are designed as stand‐alone courses which can be accessed by any learner around the globe with only an internet‐enabled electronic device required. Although much research has focused on the enrolment and demographics of MOOCs, their impact on undergraduate campus‐based students is still unclear. This article explores the impact of integrating an anatomy MOOC in to the anatomy curriculum of a year 1 medical degree program at the University of Leeds, United Kingdom. The course did not replace any teaching that was already being delivered, and was used to supplement this teaching to support the students' consolidation and revision. Analysis of student feedback indicates a high level of usage, with evidence to suggest that female learners may have approached the course in a more personalized manner. Although the video based resources and quizzes were greatly appreciated as learning tools, significant evidence suggests the students did not engage, or were inclined to engage, with the discussion fora. Furthermore, a significant majority of students did not want the MOOC to replace the existing teaching they received. Given the feedback provided, this research suggests that although the student population believe there to be value in having access to MOOC material, their role as replacements to campus‐based teaching is not supported. Details regarding the enrolment and engagement of the general public with the MOOC during the two runs are also documented, with the suggestion that graduates employed in the healthcare sector were the primary users of the course. Abstract:Health Education Journal, Ahead of Print. Background:Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) can engage large numbers of learners. Understanding motivations for enrolling and elements that engage learners may help meet learner needs. This study explored motivations, intentions, recruitment methods and course acceptability of learners enrolled in 'The Science of Weight Loss: Dispelling diet myths' (SWL101X) MOOC on EdX.Design and setting:Cross-sectional analysis included 29,666 learners from 180+ countries.Methods:Learners provided demographic data, while 8,454 learners provided optional pre-course data and 987 provided post-course data. The pre-course survey examined learners' motivations and intentions and recruitment method, and the post-course survey examined acceptability of course content. Descriptive statistics were reported as frequencies and percentages or medians (interquartile range)/means (standard deviation).Results:Learners (61% women, 51% aged between 25 and 44 years) enrolled in the MOOCs mainly to increase their nutrition knowledge (46%) and/or lose weight (62%). Most (61%) were recruited through EdX platforms (website, newsletters and blog). Course components were well received by the majority who completed the post-course survey.Conclusion:The SWL101X MOOC successfully delivered nutrition education. Future courses could consider trialling the text, videos and interactive features to further engage learners. Short, informal 'talking head' video content may facilitate engagement. Future courses should also ensure the inclusion of the most recent dietary practices for health, and the management of obesity as a chronic disease, as some of the content used in the course in this study does not represent current and/or best practice. The greater use of social media may enhance learner enrolment.

Abstract:Educational technology has obtained great importance over the last fifteen years. At present, the umbrella of educational technology incorporates multitudes of engaging online environments and fields. Learning analytics and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are two of the most relevant emerging topics in this domain. Since they are open to everyone at no cost, MOOCs excel in attracting numerous participants that can reach hundreds and hundreds of thousands. Experts from different disciplines have shown significant interest in MOOCs as the phenomenon has rapidly grown. In fact, MOOCs have been proven to scale education in disparate areas. Their benefits are crystallized in the improvement of educational outcomes, reduction of costs and accessibility expansion. Due to their unusual massiveness, the large datasets of MOOC platforms require advanced tools and methodologies for further examination. The key importance of learning analytics is reflected here. MOOCs offer diverse challenges and practices for learning analytics to tackle. In view of that, this thesis combines both fields in order to investigate further steps in the learning analytics capabilities in MOOCs. The primary research of this dissertation focuses on the integration of learning analytics in MOOCs, and thereafter looks into examining students' behavior on one side and bridging MOOC issues on the other side. The research was done on the Austrian iMooX xMOOC platform. We followed the prototyping and case studies research methodology to carry out the research questions of this dissertation. Abstract:Abstract While massive open online courses (MOOCs) promise to democratise access to education, the literature reveals a nuanced understanding of engagement in these settings, especially in resource-constrained environments. Blended MOOCs combine MOOCs and physical classroom settings of contents and instructions. This study extends this discourse by focusing on blended MOOCs, which remain under-explored in the context of developing countries. The blended MOOC at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana, deals with third-party MOOCs as open educational resources (OERs) integrated with campus-based courses. UCC students have been using such blended MOOCs since 2016, when all level 100 students were mandated to enrol in a course entitled Information Technology Skills (ITS101). ITS101 is aligned to courses in a MOOC platform called Alison as an OER. Students' engagement is key to their continued use and satisfaction with online learning, such as MOOCs. However, among all the e-learning modes, students' engagement is the lowest in MOOCs, leading to high dropout rates. Blended MOOCs are one of the techniques recommended to reverse the undesirability of MOOCs, including engagement. However, few studies have been conducted on students' engagement in blended MOOCs, especially among university students in sub-Saharan Africa using MOOCs as OERs. Thus, this paper aims to measure student engagement in blended MOOCs using the revised Community of Inquiry for university students in a developing country. The rationale is to determine whether factors affect engagement positively or negatively. A two-stage cluster sampling technique was used to determine the participants for this study. A list of blended MOOC classes offered at UCC was obtained from the staff's mailing list. In the first stage, academic levels (100, 200, 300 and 800) were randomly selected from the strata using a lottery sampling technique. In the second stage, another simple random selection of blended MOOC courses or classes was used within each selected academic level. All students in the selected classes were then included in the study. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling was used to validate the model on the predictive relationships existing among the four presences (cognitive, learning, social and teaching) and engagement. Results from the structural model analysis proved a statistically significant predictive relationship among the constructs within the model. Learning presence had the most significant effect on student engagement. Thus, it should be included as one of the presences in the community of inquiry.

Abstract:This study presents the research results obtained after the assessment of the digital competences of the pre-service and in-service teachers after their completion of the MOOC “Contemporary ICT Tools and Innovative Methods of Creative Education”. The paper provides a short description of the MOOC, requirements to pass the course and analysis of the learning outcomes through the students’ self-evaluation and feedback. The MOOC was developed in Polish and English within the project “MOOCs for Sciences of Education” and hosted on the Polish MOOCs platform Navoica (www.navoica.pl) within the framework of the competition, initiated by of Ministry of Education and Science of Poland and National Center for Research and Development (NCBR ‒ Narodowe Centrum Badań i Rozwoju) on “Direction to the MOOC”. Keeping in mind that Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have developed into a mainstream for universities, education reformers and startup companies, especially in the time of the COVID-19, the study is believed to contribute to the development of the MOOC pedagogy, and address the question of the MOOCs effectiveness for students’ learning outcomes and satisfaction. The experimental MOOC “Contemporary ICT Tools and Innovative Methods of Creative Education”, which was aimed at enhancing teachers’ digital competences, contained 8 modules, and was attended by more than 90 students through its 1st edition in 2020‒2021. The conclusions of the MOOC in focus and overall recommendations on enhancing the MOOCs effectiveness for formal education and learning outcomes have been evaluated based on the research data and provided accordingly. The selected statistical analyses and the data comparisons were made using Wilcoxon’s test at the significance level alpha = 0.05. The normality of the distributions of the studied variables was checked using the Shapiro Wilk test.

Abstract:The solutions to the grand challenges of sustainability, poverty, and health affecting the world will require education and capacity building for all individuals implementing change on a global scale. The challenge ahead is to reach those missed by traditional education and support networks. Online Learning and Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have the potential to build knowledge and share best practice experiences among individuals worldwide. This paper examines the case of the FutureLearn Social Enterprise Program, a series of MOOCs with over 50,000 registered learners, of which 15% become active learners, engaging in online exercises, debates, and conversations. This paper draws on quantitative and qualitative data collected over four years. The findings show that the course has not only had an impact on the creation of new startup social enterprises, but it has also supported a large proportion of learners in developing sustainability and social entrepreneurial ideas within a range of organisations in the public, private, and civil society sectors. The findings also show a positive cascading impact effect from the learners registered on the course to those in their network, as ideas are shared, and learners become mentors to others. Our conclusions demonstrate how digital education and online courses contribute to global education for sustainable development and social enterprise development.

Abstract:[2.2]paracyclophane (pCp), unlike many π-building blocks, has been virtually unexplored in supramolecular constructs. Reported here is the synthesis and characterization of the first pCp derivatives capable of programmed self-assembly into extended cofacial π-stacks in solution and the solid state. The design employs transannular (intramolecular) hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), hitherto unstudied in pCps, between pseudo-ortho-positioned amides of a pCp-4,7,12,15-tetracarboxamide (pCpTA) to preorganize the molecules for intermolecular H-bonding with π-stacked neighbors. X-ray crystallography confirms the formation of homochiral, one-dimensional pCpTA stacks helically laced with two H-bond strands. The chiral sense is dictated by the planar chirality (Rp or Sp ) of the pCpTA monomers. A combination of NMR, IR, and UV/Vis studies confirms the formation of the first supramolecular pCp polymers in solution.

Abstract:Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose measures of online open course success for non-commercial institutional providers of massive open online courses (MOOCs) and other scaleable open online courses (SOOCs). Design/methodology/approach – The measures are derived from the characteristics of open online courses, existing knowledge about open online course providers and users and their motivations, and current practice in MOOC evaluation and data analytics. Findings – Current practices for evaluation of open online courses are dominated by MOOC analytics which provide insights into user demographics and behaviour with some implications for evaluation of reach and course design but leaving many unknowns. Measures for evaluation of success at the institutional level can be derived from institutional goals for open online courses. Success from the point of view of teachers and technical teams involved in design, development and delivery of open online courses can be derived from team members’ expectations, resources and satisfaction as well as measures of cost and effort compared to budget and benchmarks. Users are classified as registrants (information seekers, window shoppers, samplers), downloaders and participants (starters, partial participants and full participants who are further divided into auditing, active and certificate takers); different measures are appropriate for each group. Practical implications – Practitioners and researchers must consider a variety of levels and indicators of success to adequately evaluate open online courses. Tables in the text propose measures, methods, timing and roles. Originality/value – This is the first published paper to take a holistic view of open online course evaluation and propose detailed measures.
Evaluative study of a MOOC on knowledge translation in five French-speaking countries

Abstract:Over the past few years, the RENARD research team has observed a sharp increase in the need for knowledge translation (KT) training. Given the high demand, it has been nearly impossible for the team to provide training entirely in person, and so a massive open online course (MOOC) was developed. Its aim is to promote the use and appropriation of the KT process by practitioners, decision-makers, and others in the public sphere. The goal of this study was to evaluate the MOOC by collecting users’ opinions, reactions, appropriation, and practice changes. A qualitative research design was used. Data were collected through semi-structured individual interviews (n = 16) with professionals from Canada, France, and three West African countries (Burkina Faso, Mali, and Senegal) who had taken the MOOC. All interviews were subjected to thematic content analysis. The MOOC content was generally appreciated and reused by the respondents. The results revealed one main motive for completing the course: the immediate opportunity to apply their learning in their practice environments. However, most respondents deplored the lack of interaction among learners and expressed the need for coaching with an instructor to deepen the topics covered during the course. The results also revealed connection and accessibility issues linked to the Internet network and unstable access to electricity in West African countries. The study highlights the potential of MOOCs for the acquisition of knowledge and competencies by KT professionals. Several recommendations and avenues of exploration were formulated to optimize and improve future designs of MOOCs on KT.

Climate Change and Health as Massive Open Online Courses

Abstract:To teach the basics of climate change and health - such as the nature of health impacts, best practices in adoption strategies and promotion in health co-benefits, mitigation and adaptation strategies - we have developed three massive open online courses (MOOCs). We analysed the three MOOCs with regards to different factors such as course content, student motivation, instructor behaviour, co-learner effects, design and implementation effects. We conducted online surveys for all three MOOCs based on the research model of Hone et al., extended with regards to student's motivation and course outcomes. In total, we evaluated 6898 students, of which 101 students took part in the online survey. We found differences in completion rates and country of origin for the three MOOCs. The francophone MOOC was found to have a high number of participants from lower-income- and low-and-middle-income countries. The majority of participants were aged between 22 and 40 years of age and had mainly a graduate educational background. The primary motivation to join the MOOC was the knowledge and skills gained as a result of taking the course. The three MOOCs on climate change and health had a reach of almost 7000 students worldwide, as compared to the scope of a face-to-face course on the same topic of 30 students, including students from resource-low environments that are already vulnerable to current changes in climate. The evaluation of the MOOCs outlined the current impact. However, further research has to be conducted to be able to get insights into the impact over time.
