Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was to compare the short-term and long-term prognostic significance of dif-ferent systemic inflammatory scores in patients with gastric cancer:neutrophil lymphocyte ratio(NLR) and platelet lymphocyte ratio ( PLR). Methods The clinical data of 240 patients with gastric cancer who underwent radical surgery were retrospectively analyzed. The relationship between NLR,PLR,glasgow prognostic score( GPS) and clinicopathological characteristics and perioperative compli-cations were compared. Survival analysis was performed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. The Log-rank methods were used to test the difference significance,and the multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox regression risk model. Results Patients in the high NLR and PLR groups were older,had a high GPS,deep tumor infiltration,more lymph node metastasis,and a late TNM stage (P<0. 05). The rate of positive margin in the high NLR group was higher(P<0. 05). Patients in the high NLR and PLR groups re-quired significantly higher transfusion rates than those in the low NLR and PLR groups(P<0. 05),and the high NLR group had more postoperative complications(P<0. 05). Univariate analysis showed that age,GPS,tumor location,tumor infiltration depth,lymph node metastasis status,TNM stage,vascular tumor thrombus,nerve infiltration,NLR and PLR were associated with postoperative survival of gastric cancer patients(P<0. 05). The overall survival(OS)in high NLR and high PLR groups was lower than that of low NLR and low PLR groups(P=0. 018 and P<0. 001). Cox regression analysis showed GPS and lymph node metastasis were independent prog-nostic factors of OS(P<0. 001 and P=0. 002). Conclusion Preoperative systemic inflammatory scores NLR and PLR are prognos-tic factors affecting the preoperative clinical outcomes of gastric cancer. It is recommended to be used in combination with other prog-nostic indicators for routine use in the prognosis of patients undergoing radical gastrectomy.
Prognostic Significance of Preoperative Systemic Cellular Inflammatory Markers in Gliomas: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

Abstract:Glioma is the most common malignant brain tumor and has high lethality. This tumor generated a robust inflammatory response results in the deterioration of the disease. However, the prognostic role of systemic cellular inflammatory indicators in gliomas remains controversial. This meta‐analysis aimed to assess the prognostic significance of preoperative neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte/monocyte ratio (LMR), red cell distribution width (RDW), and prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in patients with gliomas. Databases of PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and The Cochrane Library were systematically searched for all studies published up to Jan 2019. Study screening and data extraction followed established PRISMA guidelines. The Newcastle–Ottawa Scale was used to assess the quality of studies. Eighteen studies containing 3, 261 patients were included. The analyses showed an increased NLR or RDW was found to be an independent predictor of worse survival in patients with gliomas (HR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.09 to 1.74, P = 0.008; HR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.13 to 1.74, P = 0.002, respectively). Furthermore, a higher PNI indicates a better overall survival (OS) (HR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.42 to 0.77, P = 0.0002). For the evaluation of PLR and LMR, none of these variables correlated with OS (P = 0.91, P = 0.21, respectively). Our meta‐analysis indicates the NLR, RDW, and PNI rather than PLR and LMR are the independent index for predicting the OS of gliomas. Preoperative NLR, RDW, and PNI can help to evaluate disease progression, optimize treatment, and follow‐up in patients with gliomas.

Abstract:Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common complications after coronary artery bypass surgery. The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of intravenous magnesium in preventing postoperative atrial fibrillation. A meta‐analysis of eight identified randomized controlled trials, reporting comparisons between magnesium and control was undertaken. The primary outcome was incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation. Our review revealed that use of intravenous magnesium is associated with a significant reduction in the incidence of atrial fibrillation after coronary artery bypass surgery, with a relative risk of 0.64 (95% confidence interval = 0.47, 0.87, and p = 0.004).

Abstract:Gliomas, the most prevalent type of neurological tumor, pose a challenging prognosis for patients. Recent studies have underscored the importance of inflammatory markers such as the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR) in predicting the prognosis of gliomas. We undertook a thorough meta-analysis to elucidate the role of these inflammatory markers in forecasting the prognosis of glioma patients. We extracted hazard ratios (HR) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) from each study for analysis. To assess heterogeneity and identify influential studies, we conducted sensitivity analysis. Subgroup analysis was performed to investigate sources of heterogeneity, and we employed Egger's test to evaluate publication bias in the meta-analysis. Higher NLR levels were associated with shorter overall survival (HR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.33–1.60) and progression-free survival (HR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.04–1.48). There was no significant correlation between PLR levels and overall survival (HR = 1.01, 95% CI: 1.00–1.01) or progression-free survival (HR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.98–1.02) in glioma patients. Elevated MLR levels were associated with decreased overall survival in glioma patients (HR = 1.78, 95% CI: 1.36–2.34). SII levels did not show any significant association with overall or progression-free survival in glioma patients (HR = 1.00, 95% CI: 0.99–1.01).In the sensitivity analysis, two studies potentially contributed to the instability. Subgroup analyses showed patient population and area were identified as potential sources of heterogeneity. Egger's test showed that there was publication bias in the relationship between NLR and PLR and overall survival ( P < 0.05).All randomized controlled models, except for these, were not affected by publication bias. NLR and MLR are two reliable indicators of inflammation in the prognosis of glioma patients; PLR and SII do not have significant value in the prognosis of glioma patients.

Sequential Evaluation of Hematology Markers as a Prognostic Factor in Glioblastoma Patients

Abstract:In our study, we investigated the prognostic significance of hematological markers—NLR (Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte Ratio), PLR (Platelet-to-Lymphocyte Ratio), and RDW-CV (Red Blood Cell Distribution Width—Coefficient of Variation)—in 117 glioblastoma patients. The data collected from January 2016 to December 2018 included demographics, clinical scores, and treatment regimens. Unlike previous research, which often examined these markers solely before surgery, our unique approach analyzed them at multiple stages: preoperative, postoperative, and before adjuvant therapies. We correlated these markers with the overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) using statistical tools, including ANOVA, Cox regression, and Kaplan–Meier survival analyses, employing SPSS version 29.0. Our findings revealed notable variations in the NLR, PLR, and RDW-CV across different treatment stages. The NLR and PLR decreased after surgery, with some stabilization post-STUPP phase (NLR: p = 0.007, η2p = 0.06; PLR: p = 0.001, η2p = 0.23), while the RDW-CV increased post-surgery and during subsequent treatments (RDW-CV: p < 0.001, η2p = 0.67). Importantly, we observed significant differences between the preoperative phase and other treatment phases. Additionally, a higher NLR and RDW-CV at the second-line treatment and disease progression were associated with an increased risk of death (NLR at 2nd line: HR = 1.03, p = 0.029; RDW-CV at progression: HR = 1.14, p = 0.004). We proposed specific marker cut-offs that demonstrated significant associations with survival outcomes when applied to Kaplan–Meier survival curves (NLR at 2nd line < 5: p < 0.017; RDW-CV at progression < 15: p = 0.007). An elevated NLR and RDW-CV at later treatment stages correlated with poorer OS and PFS. No significant preoperative differences were detected. These biomarkers may serve as non-invasive tools for glioblastoma management.

Abstract:Recent studies suggest that inflammation response biomarkers are prognostic indicators of solid tumor outcomes. Here, we quantify the prognostic value of the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) in glioblastomas (GBMs), taking into consideration the role of the isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutation status. We examined 141 primary glioblastomas (pGBMs) and 25 secondary glioblastomas (sGBMs). NLRs, PLRs, and LMRs were calculated before surgery. IDH mutations were detected immunohistochemically after tumor resection, and patients' clinical outcomes were analyzed after classification into GBM, pGBM, and IDH-wild type glioblastoma (IDH-wt GBM) groups. To make comparisons, we set cutoffs for NLR, PLR and LMR of 4.0, 175.0, and 3.7, respectively. In a multivariate analysis, both NLR (HR=1.712, 95% CI 1.026-2.858, p=0.040) and PLR (HR=2.051, 95% CI 1.288-3.267, p=0.002) had independent prognostic value. While a low NLR was associated with a better prognosis only in the IDH-wt GBM group, PLR was predictive of patient survival in the GBM, pGBM, and IDH-wt GBM groups. By contrast, LMR exhibited no prognostic value for any of the 3 types of GBM.

Abstract:This is the third in a series of papers on the neurophysiological correlates of echolocation in the bats Myotis 1. lucifugus and Plecotus toumsendii. Previous papers (Grinnell, 1963a, b) have reported that sensitivity throughout the range of emitted frequencies, differential thresholds for frequency and intensity, and especially the ability to resolve two stimuli presented close together in time, are well adapted for gaining information from faint high-frequency echoes occurring within a few milliseconds of a much louder emitted cry. These findings provide some clues to the neural mechanisms involved in detection of an object, determination of its distance, and possibly even details of its size and structure, but there still remains the highly important question: where is the object? A bat's livelihood depends on its ability to use sound as a substitute for light in locating objects in three-dimensional space. It is not known how accurately bats can do this, but there is some evidence that, even at a distance of 1-2 m and immediately after initial detection they can select the ffight path which most effectively intercepts a flying insect 1-3 mm in diameter (Griffin, Webster & Michael, 1960). Moreover, as few as 4 or 5 pulses appear to be sufficient for the successful detection and avoidance of small wires (Grinnell & Griffin, 1958). These, with a variety of other considerations (Grinnell, 1962), strongly suggest that acoustic localization by bats is fully as accurate as that of human beings, and very likely more accurate, especially in the vertical plane. Since accurate localization is so important to bats, problems of 'directionality' (directional sensitivity) and binaural interaction have been pursued at some length. These investigations reveal interesting features, which, if not unique to bats, are at least exaggerations of what is known in other mammals.
Prognostic value of preoperative hematological markers combined with molecular pathology in patients with diffuse gliomas.

Abstract:The prediction of clinical outcome for patients with infiltrative gliomas is challenging. Although preoperative hematological markers have been proposed as predictors of survival in glioma and other cancers, systematic investigations that combine these data with other relevant clinical variables are needed to improve prognostic accuracy and patient outcomes. We investigated the prognostic value of preoperative hematological markers, alone and in combination with molecular pathology, for the survival of 592 patients with Grade II-IV diffuse gliomas. On univariate analysis, increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and decreased albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR), all predicted poor prognosis in Grade II/III gliomas. Multivariate analysis incorporating tumor status based on the presence of IDH mutations, TERT promoter mutations, and 1p/19q codeletion showed that in lower-grade gliomas, high NLR predicted poorer survival for the triple-negative, IDH mutation only, TERT mutation only, and IDH and TERT mutation groups. NLR was an independent prognostic factor in Grade IV glioma. We therefore propose a prognostic model for diffuse gliomas based on the presence of IDH and TERT promoter mutations, 1p/19q codeletion, and NLR. This model classifies lower-grade gliomas into nine subgroups that can be combined into four main risk groups based on survival projections.
Cumulative Scoring Systems and Nomograms for Predicating Survival in Patients With Glioblastomas: A Study Based on Peripheral Inflammatory Markers

Abstract:Inflammation is a hallmark of cancers. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic potential of hematological inflammatory markers in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients. The clinical data of 99 patients with lower-grade gliomas and 88 patients with GBMs were retrospectively analyzed. The optimal cutoff values for peripheral markers were determined by X-tile. Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazard regression analyses were performed to identify markers with prognostic significance. Several scoring systems were constructed by combining these prognostic markers. The predictive accuracies of nomograms incorporating these scoring systems were evaluated by Harrell’s concordance index and receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. GBM patients exhibited higher neutrophil counts (p=0.001), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (p<0.001), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) (p=0.001), as well as lower lymphocyte counts (p=0.023), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) (p=0.015), and albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) (p=0.003) than those with lower-grade gliomas. Multivariate analysis indicated that a high NLR (> 2.0) (Hazard ratio[HR]=2.519, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.220-5.204, p=0.013), low LMR (< 2.3) (HR=2.268, 95%CI: 1.172-4.386, p=0.015), or low AGR (< 1.7) (HR=2.924, 95%CI: 1.389-6.135, p=0.005) were associated with poor overall survival in GBM patients. The scoring systems of AGR-NLR, AGR-LMR, and LMR-NLR were associated with GBM survival. The nomogram integrating AGR-NLR score had the best efficacy in predicting GBM survival (c-index=0.874). Pretreatment scores of AGR-NLR, AGR-LMR, and LMR-NLR may serve as prognostic factors for GBM patients, and a nomogram integrating AGR-NLR may provide a reliable tool to facilitate personalized preoperative evaluations.

Abstract:Objectives This retrospective study aimed to explore the prognostic effect of cumulative score based on neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and fibrinogen in older adults diagnosed with glioblastoma (GBM). Design Retrospective study. Setting Huashan Hospital. Participants Patients aged over 60 years and diagnosed with GBM between 2010 and 2017. Main Outcome Measures Results of preoperative routine biochemistry and coagulation blood examinations were reviewed from medical records. Overall survival (OS) was considered a period from first resection surgery until death. Progression-free survival (PFS) was considered a period from initial operation until the date of tumor progression demonstrated in brain magnetic resonance imaging or death from any cause. If no event occurred, the last follow-up appointment was the end of the observation for OS or PFS. The Kaplan–Meier method was used to evaluate survival curves, and prognostic factors were analyzed by the Cox proportional hazards model. Results A total of 289 patients were included. Patients with higher levels of fibrinogen, NLR, and PLR had significantly shorter median OS ( p = 0.001, p = 0.016, and p = 0.002, respectively) and PFS ( p = 0.004, p = 0.022, and p = 0.009, respectively) compared with those with lower levels. Multivariate analyses showed a significant association between higher F-NLR-PLR score and reduced OS (adjusted hazard ratios [aHRs]: 1.356, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.009–1.822 for scores 1–2 compared with 0; 5.974, 95% CI 2.811–12.698 for score 3 compared with 0). Similarly, a significant association between higher F-NLR-PLR score and reduced PFS was observed (aHR: 1.428, 95% CI 1.066–1.912 for scores 1–2 compared with 0; aHR: 2.860, 95% CI 1.315–6.223 for score 3 compared with 0). Conclusion Higher F-NLR-PLR score is associated with reduced OS and PFS in older adults with GBM, which helps identify patients at high risk and guide the individualized treatment in clinical practice. Abstract:Preoperative systemic inflammation response was reported to have prognostic significance in cancer patients. We aim to evaluate different systemic inflammation-based indexes, including neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte to monocyte ratio (LMR), albumin to gamma-glutamyltransferase ratio (AGR) and C-reactive protein to albumin ratio (CRP/Alb), in newly diagnosed high-grade glioma (HGG) patients. 322 newly diagnosed HGG patients (World Health Organization Grade III=154, Grade IV=168) were retrospectively reviewed in our study. Cut-off values of inflammation-based indexes are determined by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis or median values. Univariate and multivariate were applied to evaluate the prognostic significance. At the date of the last follow-up, 252 (78.0%) patients had died. Median OS of patients with WHO Grade III and IV patients was 25.53 (95% CI 17.00-34.06) months and 14.30 (95% CI 12.04-16.56) months, respectively. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that high levels of NLR, PLR and low level of AGR can significantly predict worse PFS and OS in WHO Grade III glioma patients. While no inflammation-based index in our study showed prognostic value in WHO Grade IV patients. Multivariate analysis further identified cumulative score combining NLR and AGR as an independent predictor of both PFS (P=0.001) and OS (P=0.001) in WHO Grade III glioma patients after adjusting for demographic and clinical covariates. The novel cumulative score based on pretreatment NLR and AGR can be a promising predictor of survival for the patients with WHO Grade III gliomas.

Abstract:Background. Neutrophils are an important part of the tumor microenvironment, which stimulates inflammatory processes through phagocytosis, degranulation, release of small DNA fragments (cell-free DNA), and presentation of antigens. Since neutrophils accumulate in peripheral blood in patients with advanced-stage cancer, a high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio can be a biomarker of a poor prognosis in patients with glioblastoma. The present study aimed to explore the prognostic value of the preoperative levels of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), systemic immune inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), and cell-free DNA (cfDNA) to better predict prognostic implications in the survival rate of glioblastoma patients. Methods. The meta-analysis was carried out according to the recommendations and standards established by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Databases of PubMed, EBSCO, and Medline were systematically searched to select all the relevant studies published up to December 2022. Results. Poorer prognoses were recorded in patients with a high NLR or PLR when compared with the patients with a low NLR or PLR (HR 1.51, 95% CI 1.24–1.83, p < 0.0001 and HR 1.34, 95% CI 1.10–1.63, p < 0.01, respectively). Similarly, a worse prognosis was reported for patients with a higher cfDNA (HR 2.35, 95% CI 1.27–4.36, p < 0.01). The SII and SIRI values were not related to glioblastoma survival (p = 0.0533 and p = 0.482, respectively). Conclusions. Thus, NLR, PLR, and cfDNA, unlike SII and SIRI, appeared to be useful and convenient peripheral inflammatory markers to assess the prognosis in glioblastoma.

Abstract:Background: The prognostic value of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio, and the combined NLR-PLR score in patients with stage IV gastric carcinoma (GC) has not yet been clarified. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the potential association of NLR, PLR, and NLR-PLR score with the prognosis of patients with stage IV GC. Methods: This retrospective study included 466 patients with GC diagnosed between 2010 and 2017. High NLR and high PLR were defined using the median values as the cutoff values. We then combined the NLR and PLR value and generated the NLR-PLR score as a new biomarker. Patients were divided into three groups according to their NLR-PLR score. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to compare survival outcomes. Results: Median overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were 15.5 months (range, 0.7-96.8 months) and 6.7 months (range, 0.5-30.4 months), respectively. The NLR, PLR, and the NLR-PLR scores were correlated with clinical outcomes such as OS and PFS. Median OS for patients with NLR-PLR scores of 0, 1, and 2 was 22.5, 15.7, and 11.2 months, respectively. Median PFS for patients with these NLR-PLR scores of 0, 1, and 2 was 7.8, 7.1, and 5.2 months, respectively (P < 0.001). High NLR-PLR scores predicted poor survival in patients with stage IV GC (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings provide scientific evidence to support that the NLR-PLR score may be able to independently predict survival outcomes in patients with stage IV GC.

Abstract:In recent years, an increasing number of studies have revealed that patients' preoperative inflammatory response, coagulation function, and nutritional status are all linked to the occurrence, development, angiogenesis, and metastasis of various malignant tumors. The goal of this study is to determine the relationship between preoperative peripheral blood neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), systemic immune-inflammatory index (SII), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and platelet to fibrinogen ratio (FPR). Prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and the prognosis of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients, as well as establish a forest prediction model that includes preoperative hematological markers to predict the individual GBM patient's 3-year survival status after treatment.

Abstract:Background: Inflammatory response markers are prognostic factors for several cancers, but their role in postoperative colorectal cancer (CRC) is unclear. The purpose was to evaluate the role of preoperative Neutrophil-to-Lymphocyte ratio (NLR), Platelet-to-Lymphocyte-ratio (PLR), and Lymphocyte-to-Monocyte ratio (LMR) in the prognosis of postoperative CRC patients. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 448 CRC patients who had undergone surgical resection from December 2015 to December 2017 in our hospital. The plasma NLR, PLR, LMR, CEA, and CA19-9 were collected within 2 weeks before the operation. We recorded the clinical characteristics and survival data by reviewing medical records and phone calls. We analyzed preoperative inflammatory markers and clinical features using Pearson chi-squared tests or Fisher's tests. Uni- and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed, and overall survival (OS) was estimated with the Kaplan–Meier method. Results: High NLR and PLR were associated with worse overall survival in postoperative CRC (HR = 2.140, 95%CI = (1.488-3.078), P < 0.001; HR =1.820, 95%CI = (1.271-2.605), P = 0.001). High LMR was associated with improved overall survival in postoperative CRC (HR = 0.341, 95%CI = (0.188-0.618), P < 0.001). In the multivariate regression analysis, the increase of NLR resulted in an increase in the risk of death (HR = 1.678, 95%CI = (1.114-2.527), P = 0.013), and for the LMR, a reduction of the risk of death (HR = 0.480, 95%CI = (0.256 - 0.902), P = 0.023). Moreover, TNM stage, CA-199, CEA, nerve or vascular invasion (NVI) and adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery also were associated with worse overall survival in postoperative CRC. Conclusion: Current evidence indicates that preoperative inflammatory markers NLR, LMR, and PLR are associated with overall survival in postoperative patients with colorectal cancer. NLR is an independent risk factor, and LMR is an independent protective factor in CRC patients after surgery.

Abstract:Hyperhomocysteinemia is known to be associated with arterial occlusive vascular disease and venous thrombosis. Here, we report a young ethnic Omani patient with recurrent venous thrombosis who was found to be heterozygous for 677C-T mutation in the methyltetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme. Moderate hyperhomocystenemia was also observed, in the presence of normal red cell folate and serum B12 levels. No other documented marker of hereditary thrombophilia could be demonstrated in this patient, in spite of extensive investigation on multiple occasions.

Abstract:The presence of multiple forms of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) within a single brain is common among vertebrate species. In previous studies of reptiles, two forms of GnRH were isolated from the brain of alligators and the primary structure was determined to be that of chicken (c)GnRH-I and cGnRH-II. GnRH has also been detected by indirect methods in other reptiles including turtles, lizards, and snakes. We used a combination of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and radioimmunoassay to determine the number and molecular form(s) of GnRH in the brain of a lizard, Anolis carolinensis, that was reported to lack GnRH cells in the forebrain. Immunoreactivity was detected in the same HPLC elution position in which synthetic cGnRH-II elutes, but not in any other position. Detection was based on five antisera that among them detect the 12 known forms of GnRH; these antisera include ones that are specific to cGnRH-I and cGnRH-II. We conclude that the lizard A. carolinensis contains cGnRH-II, but not cGnRH-I or another known form of GnRH. These data, coupled with our earlier immunocytochemical study, suggest that the lizard studied here lacks cGnRH-I, the form that is found in the terminal nerve, olfactory bulb, and forebrain in nonsquamate reptiles and in birds. Our hypothesis is that the presence of both cGnRH-I and cGnRH-II in the brain is ancestral in the reptilian lineage and retained in the orders that include turtles (Chelonia) or alligators (Crocodilia). However, the pattern in the order Squamata varies: in A. carolinensis, only cGnRH-II is present in the brain and cGnRH-I is absent, whereas in the snake Thamnophilis sirtalis, cGnRH-I is retained and cGnRH-II is absent in the brain, as recently reported. This raises the question of how reproduction is controlled in reptiles that lack one form of GnRH.

Abstract:ObjectivesThe growth and development of tumors are closely related to the initiation and amplification of the inflammatory response. Various inflammatory biomarkers had attained growing attention for nearly two decades and were discovered strongly associated with cancer patients’ prognosis, indicating that systemic inflammatory response is possibly essential to cancer progression. However, little was known about the sensitive biomarkers associated with the detection, persistence, treatment, and prognosis of GBM. Hence, the retrospective research endeavored to evaluate the prognostic value of preoperative inflammatory biomarkers in patients with GBM who initially received standardized treatment.MethodsThe 232 glioblastoma patients eligible who were admitted to Qilu Hospitals in Shandong Province from January 2014 to January 2018 were collected for this analysis. Inflammatory markers, including the systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), systemic immune response index (SIRI), neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), and albumin/globulin ratio (AGR), were designed. Progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method, and we calculated the area under the ROC curve to determine the AUC value. Besides, we used the Cox proportional hazard model to estimate the relationship between variables and PFS and OS. The statistical differences between variables and PFS and OS were tested through the log-rank test. What is more, the LR method was used to perform Cox multiple regression analysis. The results were represented by hazard ratio (HR), 95% CI, any 2-tailed P < 0.01 was accepted as statistically different.ResultsThe multivariate Cox proportional hazard model presented that SII ≥ 659.1 was an independent risk factor affecting OS (HR = 2.238, 95% CI = 1.471–3.406, P < 0.001) and postoperative PFS (HR = 2.000, 95% CI = 1.472–2.716, P < 0.001) in GBM patients. The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS of the SII < 659.1 group was 70.8%, 26.9%, and 14.1%, respectively, while the 1- and 3-year OS of the SII ≥ 659.1 group was 37.5% and 11.5% (P < 0.001). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year PFS of the SII < 659.1 group was 36.3%, 19.6%, and 13%, respectively, while the 1-year PFS of the SII ≥ 659.1 group was 11.3% (P < 0.001). Results of patients’ clinical and pathological characteristics paraded that in comparison to the lower SII group, the higher SII group had significantly inferior Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS) scores (P < 0.001) and more frequent cystic changes of the tumors (P < 0.001), whereas the values of SIRI, NLR, PLR, MLR, and AGR were low.ConclusionsSII is an independent inflammatory indicator for predicting the prognosis of GBM patients after receiving initially standardized treatments.
