Abstract:The polarizations of optical fields, besides field intensities, provide more degrees of freedom to manipulate coherent light-matter interactions. Here, we propose how to achieve a coherent switch of optomechanical entanglement in a polarized-light-driven cavity system. We show that by tuning the polarizations of the driving field, the effective optomechanical coupling can be well controlled and, as a result, quantum entanglement between the mechanical oscillator and the optical transverse electric mode can be coherently and reversibly switched to that between the same phonon mode and the optical transverse magnetic mode. This ability to switch optomechanical entanglement with such a vectorial device can be important for building a quantum network being capable of efficient quantum information interchanges between processing nodes and flying photons.

Abstract:Optical tweezers is an increasingly important technique for controlling and probing particles since computer-generated holography (CGH) make steering of multiple traps individually possible. In addition, the dark focus of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams is increasingly widely used in trapping reflecting, absorbing or low-dielectric-constant objects. In this paper, we present a method to create arbitrary three-dimensional configurations of orbital angular momentum modes to achieve manipulation of micro-particles. Compared with conventional optical tweezers, this method can steer mixed arrays of traps individually and randomly by producing three-dimensional structure of optical vortices. These optical traps we used was formed by a CGH generated complex phase mask, which has three components: 1) a helical phase mask to change the transverse phase structure, 2) a blazed grating phase mask to vary the propagation direction of the incident beams, and 3) a modulated grating phase mask to divert the focal plane from the planar configurations. The latter one ensure that we can form threedimensional trapping patterns. The trap patterns can also be generated dynamically by holographic display system based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS). The experimental results show that the refresh frequency of reconfiguring achieves 24fps. Our method is effective and promise an exciting new opportunity to be used as a valuable non-contact manipulation tool in various applications.
Optical Manipulation of Plasmonic Nanoparticles Using Laser Tweezers

Abstract:Plasmonic nanoparticles, typically gold and silver colloids, can be trapped by a highly focused Gaussian beam. The behavior of the particles in an optical trap, such as the alignment, stability and interaction between particles, depends on their plasmonic nature, determined by the correlation between the size, shape and material of the particles, and the wavelength and polarization of the trapping laser. For instance, an elongated nanoparticle aligns parallel to the polarization of a NIR trapping laser to minimize the optical potential energy. However, nanowires tend to align perpendicular to the polarization. A dimer of two isotropic nanoparticles in principle acts similar to a nanorod with its "long axis" (dimer axis) parallel to the laser polarization. These results are evidenced by dark-field scattering imaging and spectra, and agree well with discrete dipole approximation simulations of the near-fields around different nanostructures. Elongated nanoparticles, dimers and nanowires all rotate when the laser polarization is rotated. Irradiated under a circularly polarized laser, trapped objects spin spontaneously due to the transfer of angular momentum from the incident photons. The interaction between two gold nanoparticles in a dimer is complex because it involves the optical potential and the DLVO potential. The latter can be probed to some extent using dark-field scattering spectroscopy.

Abstract:The use of optical trapping has become increasingly prevalent in scientific domains such as biology and physics. However, the realization of various trapping effects often requires the switching of equipment components. To address this challenge, we propose a novel approach that combines the dynamic and geometric phases with polarization multiplexing to create a monolayer multifunctional metasurface optical tweezer based on polarization modulation. Our method utilizes different circular polarizations of light to produce a both focused Gaussian field and a focused optical vortex (OV) field. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the focused Gaussian fields can effectively trap high refractive index (RI) particles, while the focused OV fields can be used as an optically controlled spanner to rotate and manipulate particles or trap low RI particles. Additionally, we present an array of polarization modulation metasurface tweezers that have the potential to trap and manipulate particles of varying radii and diverse motion behaviors. Overall, our work highlights the efficacy of polarization-modulation multifunctional metasurface tweezers in combining several trapping tasks into one device. These tweezers have promising potential for integration into future lab-on-chip technologies.

Abstract:Here we functionalized micro-scaled polymer beads with nano-scaled quantum dots and demonstrate optical trapping and tweezing, with in-situ fluorescence measurement, in an all-digital all-optical configuration. We outline the chemistry required to facilitate this, from deactivating the optical trapping environment to size, adhesion and agglomeration control. We introduce a novel holographic optical trapping set-up that leverages on vectorially structured light, allowing for the delivery of tuneable forms of light from purely scalar to purely vector, including propagation invariant flat-top beams for uniform illumination and tailored intensity gradient landscapes. Finally, we show how this has the potential to quench bleaching in a single wavelength trap by linear (spatial mode) rather than non-linear effects, advancing the nascent field of optics for chemistry.

Abstract:Optical trapping, a cutting-edge methodology, is pivotal for contactlessly controlling and exploring microscopic objects. However, it encounters formidable challenges such as multiparticle trapping, flexible control, and seamless integration. Here, we employ a polarization-modulated multi-foci technique for versatile nanoparticle trapping using multifunctional metasurfaces relying on geometric phase. Numerical simulations demonstrate the generation of two focused spots with orthogonal polarization distributions through our metasurfaces when illuminated with linearly polarized light, with their polarization distributions be interchanged by orthogonally switching the incident polarizations. We extend this design to an array of multi-foci metasurface tweezers modulated by polarization, highlighting the versatility and robustness of our approach. Furthermore, we demonstrate the simultaneous generation of two distinct focusing cylindrical vector beams using a monolayer metasurface, showcasing the two vector beams possess the interchange ability of their polarization distributions. By leveraging the Maxwell stress tensor, we assess the distinct contributions of the focused beams to longitudinal and transverse optical forces on SiO2 spheres, validating diverse trapping and manipulation behaviors for nanoparticles with the proposed metasurface designs. By manipulating the phase states of Sb2S3 nanopillars, binary-switchable optical trapping and manipulation are facilitated for for all proposed metasurface tweezers. Our work underscores the efficacy of polarization-modulation multifunctional metasurface tweezers in consolidating multiple trapping tasks into a single device, paving the way for innovative lab-on-a-chip optical trapping applications in biophysics, nanotechnology, and photonics.

Abstract:Optical manipulation has attracted remarkable interest owing to its versatile and non-invasive nature. However, conventional optical trapping remains inefficient for the nanoscopic world. The emergence of plasmonics in recent years has brought a revolutionary change in overcoming limitations due to diffraction and the requirements for high trapping laser powers. Among the near-field optical trapping cavity-based systems, Fano resonant optical tweezers have a robust trapping capability. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate sequential trapping of 20 nm particles through the use of metamaterial plasmonic optical tweezers. We investigate the multiple trapping via trap stiffness measurements for various trapping positions at low and high incident laser intensities. Our configuration could be used as a light-driven nanoscale sorting device under low laser excitation. Our results provide an alternative approach to trap multiple nanoparticles at distinct hotspots, enabling new ways to control mass transport on the nanoscale.

Optomechanically induced optical trapping system based on photonic crystal cavities

Abstract:Optical trapping has proven to be a valuable experimental technique for precisely controlling small dielectric objects. However, due to their very nature, conventional optical traps are diffraction limited and require high intensities to confine the dielectric objects. In this work, we propose a novel optical trap based on dielectric photonic crystal nanobeam cavities, which overcomes the limitations of conventional optical traps by significant factors. This is achieved by exploiting an optomechanically induced backaction mechanism between a dielectric nanoparticle and the cavities. We perform numerical simulations to show that our trap can fully levitate a submicron-scale dielectric particle with a trap width as narrow as 56 nm. It allows for achieving a high trap stiffness, therefore, a high Q-frequency product for the particle's motion while reducing the optical absorption by a factor of 43 compared to the cases for conventional optical tweezers. Moreover, we show that multiple laser tones can be used further to create a complex, dynamic potential landscape with feature sizes well below the diffraction limit. The presented optical trapping system offers new opportunities for precision sensing and fundamental quantum experiments based on levitated particles.

Abstract:We report a new method to generate multiple optical traps by using phase Fresnel lens (PFL) array. We also demonstrate its applications on manipulating micro particles in experiment. In our experiment, the PFL array is formed by a spatial light modulation. The multiple beams generated by PFL array are directed into the inverted microscope and are highly focused in the focus plane of the objective. The 1.4μm polystyrene spheres are trapped in the experiment. Each of the trapped particles can be controlled by changing the position of the corresponding Fresnel zone plate in the array. Comparing with the hologram methods, which is the most popular method in generating optical trap arrays, the PFL array method has increased the trapping efficiency. Because the power of the useless zero-order light in the hologram method can be used in PFL array method. Besides, each of the trapped particles can be controlled separately in PFL array method, which makes micromanipulation more conveniently.

Abstract:Arrays of optically levitated nanoparticles with fully tunable light-induced dipole-dipole - dipole interactions have emerged as a platform for fundamental research and sensing applications. However, previous experiments utilized two optical traps with identical polarization, leading to an interference effect. Here, we demonstrate light-induced dipole-dipole - dipole interactions using two orthogonally polarized optical traps. Furthermore, we achieve control over the strength and polarity of the optical coupling by adjusting the polarization and propose a method to simultaneously and stably measure conservative and non-conservative coupling rates. Abstract:Optical trapping is having ever-increasing impact in science $-$ particularly biophysics, photonics and most recently in quantum optomechanics $-$ owing to its superior capability for manipulating nanoscale structures and materials. However, essentially all experimental optical trapping studies in the optical dipole regime have, to date, been dominated by the interaction between a material's electric polarizability, $\alpha_{e}$, and the electric part of the incident electromagnetic field, and therefore described by electric field intensity gradient forces. Optical trapping based on optical magnetic light-matter interactions has not been experimentally addressed despite it's immediate extension of the boundaries of optical trapping research and applications. This paper addresses this long-standing deficiency through the realization of optical magnetic trapping of large index of refraction (i.e., Si) nanoparticles and also presents a formalism for quantitative understanding of the experimental findings. Our experimental optical trapping results require including optical magnetic polarizability, $\alpha_{m}$, and electric-magnetic scattering forces associated with the Photonic Hall effect that are qualitatively and quantitatively validated by Maxwell stress tensor calculations. Our findings bring new opportunities for nanoparticle manipulation, potentially relax the limitations Ashkin claimed based on the optical Earnshaw's theorem, motivate optical matter formation by optical magnetic interactions, and suggest new N-body effects and symmetry breaking to drive dynamics of optical matter systems.

Abstract:Nano-manipulation technology, as a kind of "bottom-up" tool, has exhibited an excellent capacity in the field of measurement and fabrication on the nanoscale. Although variety manipulation methods based on probes and microscopes were proposed and widely used due to locating and imaging with high resolution, the development of non-contacted schemes for these methods is still indispensable to operate small objects without damage. However, optical manipulation, especially near-field trapping, is a perfect candidate for establishing brilliant manipulation systems. This paper reports about simulations on the electric and force fields at the tips of metallic probes irradiated by polarized laser outputted coming from a scanning near-field optical microscope probe. Distributions of electric and force field at the tip of a probe have proven that the polarized laser can induce nanoscale evanescent fields with high intensity, which arouse effective force to move nanoparticles. Moreover, schemes with dual probes are also presented and discussed in this paper. Simulation results indicate that different combinations of metallic probes and polarized lasers will provide diverse near-field and corresponding optical force. With the suitable direction of probes and polarization direction, the dual probe exhibits higher trapping force and wider effective wavelength range than a single probe. So, these results give more novel and promising selections for realizing optical manipulation in experiments, so that distinguished multi-functional manipulation systems can be developed.
Fine features of optical potential well induced by nonlinearity

Abstract:Particles trapped by optical tweezers, behaving as mechanical oscillators in an optomechanical system, have found tremendous applications in various disciplines and are still arousing research interest in frontier and fundamental physics. These optically trapped oscillators provide compact particle confinement and strong oscillator stiffness. But these features are limited by the size of the focused light spot of a laser beam, which is typically restricted by the optical diffraction limit. Here, we propose to build an optical potential well with fine features assisted by the nonlinearity of the particle material, which is independent of the optical diffraction limit. We show that the potential well shape can have super-oscillation-like features and a Fano-resonance-like phenomenon, and the width of the optical trap is far below the diffraction limit. A particle with nonlinearity trapped by an ordinary optical beam provides a new platform with a sub-diffraction potential well and can have applications in high-accuracy optical manipulation and high-precision metrology.

Abstract:Recent advances in nanotechnologies have prompted the need for tools to accurately and non invasively manipulate individual nanoobjects. Among the possible strategies, optical forces have been widely used to enable nano optical tweezers capable of trapping or moving a specimen with unprecedented accuracy. Here, we propose an architecture consisting of a nanotip excited with a plasmonic vortex enabling effective dynamical control of nanoparticles in three dimensions. The optical field generated by the structure can be used to manipulate single dielectric nanoparticles acting on the total angular momentum of light used to illuminate the structure. We demonstrate that it is possible to stably trap or force the beaming of the particle from specific points, thus enabling a new platform for nanoparticle manipulation and sorting.

Abstract: Optical trapping and manipulation using laser beams play a key role in many areas including biology, atomic science, and nanofabrication. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate the first use of a vortex-pair beam in optical trapping and manipulation. We successfully trap two spherical microparticles simultaneously by a single vortex-pair beam. Precisely position-controllable manipulation of the trapped spherical microparticles is realized by adjusting the off-axis distance of the vortices on the initial phase plane of the vortex-pair beam. Based on the feature of the vortex-pair beam, as an optical wrench, the high-precision angular-controllable rotation of the cylindrical microrod is achieved by rotating the initial phase structure. Our result provides a rich control on the trapping of microparticles and has greatly important applications in biological area, and optically driven micromachines or motors.
Tunable on-chip optical traps for levitating particles based on single-layer metasurface

Abstract:Optically levitated multiple nanoparticles has emerged as a platform for studying complex fundamental physics such as non-equilibrium phenomena, quantum entanglement, and light-matter interaction, which could be applied for sensing weak forces and torques with high sensitivity and accuracy. An optical trapping landscape of increased complexity is needed to engineer the interaction between levitated particles beyond the single harmonic trap. However, existing platforms based on spatial light modulators for studying interactions between levitated particles suffered from low efficiency, instability at focal points, the complexity of optical systems, and the scalability for sensing applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrated that a metasurface which forms two diffraction-limited focal points with a high numerical aperture (0.9) and high efficiency (31%) can generate tunable optical potential wells without any intensity fluctuations. A bistable potential and double potential wells were observed in the experiment by varying the focal points distance, and two nanoparticles were levitated in double potential wells for hours, which could be used for investigating the levitated particles nonlinear dynamics, thermal dynamics, and optical binding. This would pave the way for scaling the number of levitated optomechanical devices or realizing paralleled levitated sensors.

Abstract:Vector beams (VBs) are widely investigated for its special intensity and polarization distributions, which is useful for optical micromanipulation, optical micro-fabrication, optical communication, and single molecule imaging. To date, it is still a challenge to realize nonlinear frequency conversion (NFC) and manipulation of such VBs because of the polarization sensitivity in most of nonlinear processes. Here, we report an experimental realization of NFC and manipulation of VBs which can be used to expand the available frequency band. The main idea of our scheme is to introduce a Sagnac loop to solve the polarization dependence of NFC in nonlinear crystals. Furthermore, we find that a linearly polarized vector beam should be transformed to an exponential form before performing the NFC. The experimental results are well agree with our theoretical model. The present method is also applicable to other wave bands and second order nonlinear processes, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.
