Abstract:Mars' transition from an early "warm and wet" to a "cold and dry" environment left fingerprints on the geological record of fluvial activity on Mars. The morphological and mineralogical observations of aqueous activity provided varying constraints on the condition and duration of liquid water on the Martian surface. In this study, we surveyed the mineralogy of Martian alluvial fans and deltas and investigated the hydrated silica-bearing deposits associated with some of these landforms. Using CRISM data, we identified 35 locations across Mars with hydrated silica in proximity to fans/deltas, where the spectral characteristics are consistent with immature or dehydrated opal-A. In a few stepped fans/deltas, we find hydrated silica occurs within the bulk fan deposits and form sedimentary layers correlated with elevation. Meanwhile, in the older fans/deltas, silica mostly occurs at distal locations, and the relation to primary sedimentary deposits is more complex. We propose that the hydrated silica-bearing deposits in stepped fans/deltas likely formed authigenically from Martian surface waters, mainly during the Late Hesperian and Early Amazonian. These silica-bearing deposits could be a tracer for the temperature or duration of water involved in the formation of these deposits, given more precise and detailed observations of the sedimentary context, accessory minerals, the concentration of hydrated silica, and sediment-to-water ratio. Therefore, we consider that silica-bearing deposits should be among the most critical samples to investigate for future Mars missions, which are accessible in the landing sites of Mars 2020 and ExoMars 2022 missions.

Abstract:Covered by vast eolian landforms, gravel deposits, and playas, the worldwide typical evaporite deposit land, Qaidam Basin, in northwestern China is analogous to early Mars when the aridification process had lasted for millions of years since the end of a wetter climate. This study aims to investigate the chemical and isotopic characteristics of waters in an evaporite-rich environment, as well as the habitable conditions therein, that have undergone a transformation similar to early Mars. In May 2023, a total of 26 water samples were collected across the representative central axis of a longitudinal aridity gradient in the Qaidam Basin, including categories of meteoric water, freshwater, standing water accumulated after precipitation, salty lacustrine water, and hypersaline brines to inspect compounds made up of carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, halogen, and metallic elements. As evaporation intensified, the salt types transformed from HCO 3 -Ca·Na to Cl·SO 4 -Na or ClMg. The dominance of carbonate will gradually be replaced by sulfate and chloride, leaving much more dilute and less detectable contents. The presence of trace ClO 4 − , ClO 3 − , ClO 2 − , and BrO 3 − was confirmed in a few of the sampled Qaidam waters, indicating the preservation of oxyhalides in waters within an arid region and possibly the presence of relevant microbial enzymes. The isotopes of water, carbonaceous, and nitrogenous compounds provide valuable references for either abiogenic or biogenic signatures. With undetectable amount, phosphorus was found to be the limiting nutrient in evaporative aquatic environments but not necessarily antibiosignatures. Overall, these results suggest that the paleo-lacustrine environments on Mars are more likely to preserve biosignatures if they feature the dominance of carbonate minerals, bioavailable nitrate, phosphorus, and organic carbon, the presence of thermodynamically unstable oxyhalides, and isotope ratios that point to the involvement of biological activity.

Comprehensive Analysis of a Chloride‐Rich Topographic Depression in Terra Sirenum, Mars: A Possible Lost Basin With Astrobiological Significance

Abstract:Abstract The hygroscopic nature of chlorides gives them the potential to provide a harbor for microbes to adapt and survive in extreme conditions, which is pertinent to Mars, given its evolution of climatic conditions. Moreover, observations of secondary hydrous minerals in chloride‐rich regions have opened the case for a diverse geological environment on the Martian surface. Therefore, through comprehensive analysis, we aim to reconstruct the geological evolution of a chloride‐rich basin within Terra Sirenum. We conducted morphological, morphometric, and mineralogical analyses of the basin and its surrounding area to determine its geological evolution, longevity, and environmental condi5tions during its activity. Subsequently, we carried out a discharge analysis of the surrounding valley networks and determined the water activity using ionic forms of the associated mineralogy. We observed bright‐toned polygonal cracks within the basin as well as its surrounding terrain, suggesting that the basin extended beyond its present boundary. Mineralogical diversity and age dating of the basin and the surrounding area indicated different geochemical environments and cycles of wetting and drying until the late Hesperian. Whereas, sediment transport modeling suggests that the basin was hydrologically active for more than ten thousand years. Our results show a tell‐tale signature of a large sedimentary basin and a large‐scale geological process within the Terra Sirenum. The water activity modeling show that the geochemical composition of the basin was favorable to support the origin of life forms and/or sustain them and suggest promising aspects of the basin for future landing missions.

Abstract:Human hnRNP A1 is a versatile single-stranded nucleic acid-binding protein that functions in various aspects of mRNA maturation and in telomere length regulation. The crystal structure of UP1, the amino-terminal domain of human hnRNP A1 containing two RNA-recognition motifs (RRMs), bound to a 12-nucleotide single-stranded telomeric DNA has been determined at 2.1 A resolution. The structure of the complex reveals the basis for sequence-specific recognition of the single-stranded overhangs of human telomeres by hnRNP A1. It also provides insights into the basis for high-affinity binding of hnRNP A1 to certain RNA sequences, and for nucleic acid binding and functional synergy between the RRMs. In the crystal structure, a UP1 dimer binds to two strands of DNA, and each strand contacts RRM1 of one monomer and RRM2 of the other. The two DNA strands are antiparallel, and regions of the protein flanking each RRM make important contacts with DNA. The extensive protein-protein interface seen in the crystal structure of the protein-DNA complex and the evolutionary conservation of the interface residues suggest the importance of specific protein-protein interactions for the sequence-specific recognition of single-stranded nucleic acids. Models for regular packaging of telomere 3' overhangs and for juxtaposition of alternative 5' splice sites are proposed.
Molecular biomarkers in the subsurface of the Salar Grande (Atacama, Chile) evaporitic deposits

Abstract:The Late Miocene–Pliocene aged hyperarid evaporitic system of Salar Grande is a unique, halite-rich sedimentary basin in the Cordillera de la Costa of the Central Andes (Chile) whose bio-sedimentary record is poorly understood. The persistence of hyperacidity over millions of years, the hypersalinity, and the intense UV radiation make it a terrestrial analogue to assess the potential presence of organic matter in the halite deposits found on Mars. We investigated the occurrence and distribution of biomolecules along a 100-m depth drill down to the ~ 9 Ma old detrital deposits topped by La Soledad Formation (ESF). We have identified two well-defined mineralogical and geochemical units by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and ion chromatography: a nearly pure halite down to 40 m, and a detrital one down to 100 m depth. One-dimensional GC–MS and two-dimensional GC × GC-TOF–MS gas chromatography–mass spectrometry techniques allowed us to detect a variety of lipidic compounds (n-alkanes, n-alkanols, isoprenoids, steroids, and hopanoids), and a relative abundance of functionalized hydrocarbons (n-fatty acids or n-aldehydes), mostly in the upper halite. We also detected biopolymers and microbial markers by fluorescence sandwich-microarray immunoassays. A dominant prokaryotic origin was associated with halophile bacteria and archaea, with minor contributions of lichens, macrophytes, or higher plants. The lipidic record was also imprinted by oxic (high pristane over phytane ratios) and saline (squalane, and mono-methyl n-alkanes) signatures. The vertical abundance and distribution of biomarkers in the Salar Grande was explained by a generalized effect of xeropreservation, combined with salt encapsulation in the upper halite deposits, or with protective organics-mineral interactions in the deeper detrital unit. The results contribute to the interpretation of terrestrial bio-sedimentary records of halite deposits and their association to environmental conditions. The high potential for preservation of biosignatures at Salar Grande suggests that similar evaporitic deposits in Mars should be priority targets for searching for signs of life.

Abstract:The Curiosity rover discovered fine-grained sedimentary rocks, which are inferred to represent an ancient lake and preserve evidence of an environment that would have been suited to support a martian biosphere founded on chemolithoautotrophy. This aqueous environment was characterized by neutral pH, low salinity, and variable redox states of both iron and sulfur species. Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorus were measured directly as key biogenic elements; by inference, phosphorus is assumed to have been available. The environment probably had a minimum duration of hundreds to tens of thousands of years. These results highlight the biological viability of fluvial-lacustrine environments in the post-Noachian history of Mars.
Sodium channels induced by depolarization of the Xenopus laevis oocyte.

Abstract:An electrically gated Na+ channel can be made to appear in the membrane of the Xenopus laevis oocyte by simple depolarization. This membrane normally responds passively to imposed transmembrane currents with resting potentials around -60 mV, but when it is held depolarized to more than about +30 mV it becomes possible to obtain long-lasting regenerative depolarizations up to +80 mV; these depolarizations can last as long as 20 min. This potential is due to an "induction" of a Na+-dependent channel that is electrically gated open and closed. Its threshold for opening is about -20 mV and it is selective for Na+ over Cs+ and choline+ but is blocked by relatively small quantities of Li+. When a long voltage clamp step to a positive potential under ENa (+70 to +90 mV) is applied, an inward current is observed for many minutes, implying that this channel does not have an inactivation mechanism. The inward Na+ current is blocked by 0.50 mM tetrodotoxin. When the membrane is held at or near resting potential, the excitability will disappear with time, but it can be made to reappear by again depolarizing the membrane.
Compositional Remote Sensing and Hyperspectral Laboratory Analyses of Sinters in Hydrothermal Fields in Chile, With Relevance to Astrobiological Targets on Mars

Abstract:Siliceous hot spring deposits, or sinters, deposit from hot spring discharge at Earth's surface and are sites of exceptional preservation of biosignatures. Their macro‐ and micro‐textures are regarded as important evidence of past microbial activities in hydrothermal environments. However, biology mimics do occur, and bona fide microbial textures could be destroyed by subsequent diagenesis or other post‐depositional processes. Thus, it is paramount to narrow the search for prospective Martian silica‐rich deposits that may contain biosignatures from both orbital and rover‐based perspectives. This study investigates hydrothermal deposits in Chile, which are analogs of high‐silica deposits discovered in the Gusev crater on Mars, through remote sensing and laboratory analysis. Results indicate that compositional remote sensing based on multispectral data with a high spatial resolution of <4 m/pixel reflects various concentrations of silica, which assisted in identifying the direction of discharged hydrothermal flows from the vent to the apron. Micro‐infrared mapping of sinters from similar hydrothermal fields linked spectral features to specific textures revealed by scanning electron microscope and chemical compositions confirmed by electron microprobe analysis, indicating that sinters with no shift in their emissivity minimum in the thermal infrared range were more likely to preserve cellular structures. An instrument for collecting multispectral data with higher spatial resolution could aid in characterizing the geologic settings of potential hot springs on Mars. Locating emissivity minima in the infrared regions of silica that do not shift to a lower position would suggest the potential for well‐preserved microbial structures in Martian sinters, if life ever did exist there.

Abstract:Chloride-bearing deposits on Mars record high-elevation lakes during the waning stages of Mars' wet era (mid-Noachian to late Hesperian). The water source pathways, seasonality, salinity, depth, lifetime, and paleoclimatic drivers of these widespread lakes are all unknown. Here we combine reaction-transport modeling, orbital spectroscopy, and new volume estimates from high-resolution digital terrain models, in order to constrain the hydrologic boundary conditions for forming the chlorides. Considering a T = 0 degrees C system, we find: (1) individual lakes were >100 m deep and lasted decades or longer; (2) if volcanic degassing was the source of chlorine, then the water-to-rock ratio or the total water volume were probably low, consistent with brief excursions above the melting point and/or arid climate; (3) if the chlorine source was igneous chlorapatite, then Cl-leaching events would require a (cumulative) time of >10 yr at the melting point; (4) Cl masses, divided by catchment area, give column densities 0.1 - 50 kg Cl/m^2, and these column densities bracket the expected chlorapatite-Cl content for a seasonally-warm active layer. Deep groundwater was not required. Taken together, our results are consistent with Mars having a usually cold, horizontally segregated hydrosphere by the time chlorides formed.
Salt Constructs in Paleo-Lake Basins as High-Priority Astrobiology Targets

Abstract:In extreme environments, microbial organisms reside in pockets with locally habitable conditions. Micro-climates conducive to the persistence of life in an otherwise inhospitable environment—"refugia"—are spatially restricted and can be micro- to centimeters in extent. If martian microbes are preserved in fossil refugia, this presents a double-edged sword for biosignature exploration: these locations will be specific and targetable but small and difficult to find. To better understand what types of features could be refugia in martian salt-encrusted basins, we explore a case study of two terrestrial habitats in salt-encrusted paleo-lake basins (salars): Salar Grande (SG) in the Atacama Desert and Salar de Pajonales (SdP) in the Altiplano Puna plateau of Chile. We review the formation of salt constructs within SG and SdP, which are the features that serve as refugia in those salars, and we explore the connection between the formation of salt constructs at the local scale with the larger-scale geologic phenomena that enable their formation. Our evaluation of terrestrial salars informs an assessment of which chloride basins on Mars might have had a high potential to form life-hosting salt constructs and may preserve biosignatures, or even host extant life. Our survey of martian salars identifies 102 salars in regions with a geographic context conducive to the formation of salt constructs, of which 17 have HiRISE coverage. We investigate these 17 martian salars with HiRISE coverage and locate the presence of possible salt constructs in 16 of them. Salt constructs are features that have may have been continuously habitable for the past ~3.8 Byr, have exceptional preservation potential, and are accessible by robotic exploration. Future work could explore in detail the mechanisms involved in the formation of the topographic features we identified in salt-encrusted basins on Mars to test the hypothesis that they are salt constructs.

Subglacial hydrothermal alteration minerals in Jökulhlaup deposits of Southern Iceland, with implications for detecting past or present habitable environments on Mars

Abstract:Jökulhlaups are terrestrial catastrophic outfloods, often triggered by subglacial volcanic eruptions. Similar volcano-ice interactions were likely important on Mars where magma/lava may have interacted with the planet's cryosphere to produce catastrophic floods. As a potential analogue to sediments deposited during martian floods, the Holocene sandurs of Iceland are dominated by basaltic clasts derived from the subglacial environment and deposited during jökulhlaups. Palagonite tuffs and breccias, present within the deposits, represent the primary alteration lithology. The surface abundance of palagonite on the sandurs is 1-20%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of palagonite breccias confirms a mineral assemblage of zeolites, smectites, low-quartz, and kaolinite. Oriented powder X-ray diffractograms (< 2 microm fraction) for palagonite breccia clasts and coatings reveal randomly ordered smectite, mixed layer smectite/illite, zeolites, and quartz. Visible light-near infrared (VNIR) and shortwave infrared (SWIR) lab spectroscopic data of the same palagonite samples show H2O/OH(-) absorptions associated with clays and zeolites. SWIR spectra derived from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) images of the sandurs reveal Al-OH(-) and Si-OH(-) absorption features. The identified alteration mineral assemblage is consistent with low temperature (100-140 degrees C) hydrothermal alteration of basaltic material within the subglacial environment. These results suggest that potential martian analog sites that contain a similar suite of hydrated minerals may be indicative of past hydrothermal activity and locations where past habitable environments for microbial life may be found.
A global database of Mars-relevant hydrovolcanic environments on Earth with potential biosignature preservation

Abstract:Basaltic hydrovolcanic environments on Earth produce abundant glass (sideromelane), which readily alters and acts as an important source of chemical energy for lithotrophic microorganisms; as such, these sites are significant for potential origins-of-life and early life research. Similar environments were identified on Mars and should be considered potential targets for astrobiological investigation. Pleistocene to recent phreatomagmatic and glaciovolcanic structures on Earth include tuff cones, tuff rings, maars, tuyas, and tindars. Such hydrovolcanic deposits contain abundant glass that is variably hydrothermally altered, and some areas contain published evidence of putative microbial habitation and microbially mediated alteration, including microtubules and granular alteration. We analyzed the literature on terrestrial hydrovolcanic environments and created a global database of 45 volcanic fields on Earth with compositions, alteration histories, and structures relevant to Mars. These sites have geochemistry, mineralogy, and syn- and post-eruptive environmental conditions that make them suitable targets for Mars-analogue astrobiological research. Relevant alteration products include palagonite, zeolites, clays, and calcite. Seven of these sites have evidence of microbially mediated alteration, which could be considered a useful biosignature in a Mars-analogue context. The sites are Wells Gray–Clearwater Volcanic Field, Canada; Fort Rock Volcanic Field, Western Snake River Plain Volcanic Field, and Upsal Hogback, USA; Reykjanes Volcanic Field and Western Volcanic Zone, Iceland; and Carapace Nunatak, Antarctica. Based on the properties of these already confirmed sites, along with comparing the remaining 38 Earth volcanic fields to volcanic rocks on Mars, we recommend 11 volcanic fields in particular from our database for future investigations: Auckland and South Auckland volcanic fields, New Zealand; O’ahu, Black Rock Desert, and Black Point, USA; Tuya Volcanic Field, Canada; Karapınar Volcanic Field, Türkiye; Vestmannaeyjar Archipelago, Iceland; Llancanelo Volcanic Field, Argentina; São Miguel Volcanic Field, Azores; and Icefall Nunatak, Antarctica. We recommend reviewing palagonitized tuff samples from these sites for evidence of microbial alteration, in addition to performing geochemical and mineralogical analyses to constrain their magmatic and alteration properties. By studying the rock record of hydrovolcanic environments on Earth to infer habitability and biological alteration, we contribute to establishing the conditions favorable for the origination, survival, and proliferation of life in a Mars-relevant setting.

Constraining the potential liquid water environment at Gale crater, Mars

Abstract:The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) has now made continuous in-situ meteorological measurements for several martian years at Gale crater, Mars. Of importance in the search for liquid formation are REMS' measurements of ground temperature and in-air measurements of temperature and relative humidity, which is with respect to ice. Such data can constrain the surface and subsurface stability of brines. Here we use updated calibrations to REMS data and consistent relative humidity comparisons (i.e., w.r.t. liquid vs w.r.t. ice) to investigate the potential formation of surface and subsurface liquids throughout MSL's traverse. We specifically study the potential for the deliquescence of calcium perchlorate. Our data analysis suggests that surface brine formation is not favored within the first 1648 sols as there are only two times (sols 1232 and 1311) when humidity-temperature conditions were within error consistent with a liquid phase. On the other hand, modeling of the subsurface environment would support brine production in the shallow subsurface. Indeed, we find that the shallow subsurface for terrains with low thermal inertia ($\Gamma\lesssim 300$ J m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ s$^{-1/2}$) may be occasionally favorable to brine formation through deliquescence. Terrains with $\Gamma\lesssim175$ J m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$ s$^{-1/2}$ and albedos of $\gtrsim0.25$ are the most apt to subsurface brine formation. Should brines form, they would occur around Ls 100$^{\circ}$. Their predicted properties would not meet the Special nor Uncertain Region requirements, as such they would not be potential habitable environments to life as we know it.

Abstract:To assess whether life existed on Mars, it is crucial to identify geochemical biosignatures that are relevant to specific Martian environments. In this paper, thermochemical modeling was used to investigate fluid chemistries and secondary minerals that would have evolved biotically over geological time scales in Martian fluvio‐lacustrine and evaporitic settings, and that could be used as potential inorganic biosignatures for life detection on Mars. Modeling was performed using fluid and rock chemistries relevant to Gale crater aqueous environments. Potential inorganic biosignatures were identified investigating alteration deposits found at the surface of a simulant exposed to short‐term bio‐mediated weathering and comparing experimental and modeling results. In a fluvio‐lacustrine setting (water/rock of 2000–278), models suggest that less complex mineral assemblages form during biotic basalt dissolution and subsequent brine evaporation compared to what would happen in an abiotic system. Mainly nontronite, kaolinite, and quartz form under biotic conditions, whereas celadonite, talc, and goethite would also precipitate abiotically. Quartz, sepiolite, and gypsum would precipitate from the evaporation of fluids evolved biotically, whereas nontronite, talc, zeolite, and gypsum would form in an abiotic evaporitic environment. These results could be used to distinguish products of abiotic and biotic processes, aiding the interpretation of data from Mars exploration missions.

Fluvial Depositional Systems of the African Humid Period: An Analog for an Early, Wet Mars in the Eastern Sahara

Abstract:A widely hypothesized but complex transition from widespread fluvial activity to predominantly aeolian processes is inferred on Mars based on remote sensing data observations of ancient landforms. However, the lack of analysis of in situ martian fluvial deposits hinders our understanding of the flow regime nature and sustainability of the martian fluvial activity and the hunt for ancient life. Studying analogs from arid zones on Earth is fundamental to quantitatively understanding geomorphic processes and climate drivers that might have dominated during early Mars. Here we investigate the formation and preservation of fluvial depositional systems in the eastern Sahara, where the largest arid region on Earth hosts important repositories of past climatic changes. The fluvial systems are composed of well‐preserved single‐thread sinuous to branching ridges and fan‐shaped deposits interpreted as deltas. The systems' configuration and sedimentary content suggest that ephemeral rivers carved these landforms by sequential intermittent episodes of erosion and deposition active for 10s to 100s years over ∼10,000 years during the late Quaternary. Subsequently, these landforms were sculpted by a marginal role of rainfall and aeolian processes with minimum erosion rates of 1.1±0.2 mm/yr, supplying ∼96±24✕1010 m3 of disaggregated sediment to adjacent aeolian dunes. Our results imply that similar martian fluvial systems preserving single‐thread, short distance source‐to‐sink courses may have formed due to transient drainage networks active over short durations. Altogether, this study adds to the growing recognition of the complexity of interpreting climate history from orbital images of landforms.

Abstract:The Eridania Basin system, located in the martian southern highlands, may have hosted long‐lived lacustrine hydrothermalism. Despite its multi‐basin scale and suggested longevity that should pervasively alter the landscape, evidence for consistent compositional signatures of lacustrine hydrothermalism across varying spatial scales is poorly known. Here we synthesize orbital data sets (derived from the Gamma Ray Spectrometer, GRS; Thermal Emission Spectrometer, TES; and Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, CRISM) to characterize the composition of Eridania's landscape from regional to outcrop scales. The bulk geochemistry representing decimeter depths is broadly on par with mafic igneous compositions seen elsewhere on Mars. The landscape‐scale mineralogy of Eridania suggests a compositional distinction between Eridania's northernmost basin and the remaining basins. Meanwhile, chloride mapping and analyses of amorphous silica and acid‐altered clay phases at the outcrop scale both show that mineralogical evidence for hydrothermal alteration and putative lacustrine activity is broadly limited to the northernmost basin, and that most other amorphous silica in Eridania is consistent with low‐to‐minimal water/rock weathering. This suggests either limited regional hydrothermalism or extensive mafic resurfacing occurred in Eridania, the latter of which is consistent with previous studies. Our findings collectively suggest that Eridania underwent local crystal hydrothermal alteration, perhaps confined to the northernmost basin, while much of the remainder of the Eridania's basins either experienced low‐temperature weathering or extensive resurfacing to at least meter scale depths by later volcanism. This supports prior inferences of spatially and temporally limited surface hydrology on Mars and extensive volcanic resurfacing of basins, as in the Gusev Crater.

Abstract:Global mineralogical mapping of Mars by the Observatoire pour la Mineralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activité (OMEGA) instrument on the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft provides new information on Mars' geological and climatic history. Phyllosilicates formed by aqueous alteration very early in the planet's history (the “phyllocian” era) are found in the oldest terrains; sulfates were formed in a second era (the “theiikian” era) in an acidic environment. Beginning about 3.5 billion years ago, the last era (the “siderikian”) is dominated by the formation of anhydrous ferric oxides in a slow superficial weathering, without liquid water playing a major role across the planet.

Abstract:On Mars, the well-known crustal dichotomy marks the boundary between the old southern highlands and the younger northern lowlands. Among these lowlands, Chryse Planitia resembles a quasi-circular basin surrounded by several highlands, and blends into Acidalia Planitia, another flat lowland located farther north. The transition area between these highlands and the Chryse basin is often designated as " circum-Chryse Planitia ", and is the terminus for many outflow channels. Infrared datasets display several sites therein with extensive clay-bearing outcrops, further testifying for aqueous activity on early Mars – notably around Mawrth Vallis, Oxia Planum and Xanthe Terra. In this study, we investigate clay-bearing outcrops identified along the western margins of circum-Chryse basin, often overlooked in the Martian literature. We also compare them with outcrops found in other regions along the crustal dichotomy and relevant in the Martian literature, such as Oxia Planum, Mawrth Vallis and Nili Fossae. Investigating such deposits is crucial for astrobiological perspectives, as they are appealing targets to search for organic compounds possibly stored throughout the rocks and soils. Fe,Mg-rich clays generally result from the interaction of liquid water with rocks under low temperatures, moderate pH levels and neutral to reducing conditions, factors favorable for life. Here, the clay minerals detected in west Chryse Planitia are consistent with either ferrosaponites or vermiculites associated with hydrobiotite, as recently inferred in Oxia Planum and north Xanthe Terra. Diverse alteration pathways might be involved based on either of these clay species. The clay-bearing rocks crop out in isolated hills in Lunae Planum, and along inverted channels and small craters in Tempe Terra. Further geologic investigations in circum-Chryse Planitia should certainly provide new clues on their origin and weathering conditions, while supporting the upcoming ExoMars rover mission and other future explorations.

Abstract:Mars has many well‐exposed fluvial ridges and fluvio‐deltaic basins; in two of these locations, the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers are currently searching for signs of habitability. The distribution of organic carbon that might persist in ancient fluvial deposits present on Mars is not well understood. In this study, we set out to assess the preservation potential of organic carbon in a hyperarid fluvial environment with observations and analyses of the Amargosa River in Death Valley, California (United States). The lower reaches of the Amargosa River in Badwater Basin are nearly devoid of plants and contain low gradient, meandering channels, making them a valuable terrestrial analog for early martian fluvial systems. We analyzed sediment taken from fluvial deposits exposed in cutbanks of two bends of a meandering channel. We found total organic carbon abundances that were on average 0.15% up to a meter below the surface. X‐ray diffraction and electron microscopy analyses revealed a suite of high redox potential mineral phases (including iron and manganese oxides) mixed with detrital and authigenic silicates, carbonate, and sulfate salts at or close to redox equilibrium with pore fluids in contact with the atmosphere. This finding highlighted that organic carbon can persist in fluvial deposits at low abundance despite oxidizing conditions and saturated sediments and suggested that ancient fluvial deposits on Mars may retain traces of organics in fine‐grained deposits if they are present during deposition.

Abstract:The nature of the early Martian climate is one of the major unanswered questions of planetary science. Key challenges remain, but a new wave of orbital and in situ observations and improvements in climate modeling have led to significant advances over the last decade. Multiple lines of geologic evidence now point to an episodically warm surface during the late Noachian and early Hesperian periods 3-4 Ga. The low solar flux received by Mars in its first billion years and inefficiency of plausible greenhouse gases such as CO2 means that the steady-state early Martian climate was likely cold. A denser CO2 atmosphere would have caused adiabatic cooling of the surface and hence migration of water ice to the higher altitude equatorial and southern regions of the planet. Transient warming caused melting of snow and ice deposits and a temporarily active hydrological cycle, leading to erosion of the valley networks and other fluvial features. Precise details of the warming mechanisms remain unclear, but impacts, volcanism and orbital forcing all likely played an important role. The lack of evidence for glaciation across much of Mars' ancient terrain suggests the late Noachian surface water inventory was not sufficient to sustain a northern ocean. While mainly inhospitable on the surface, early Mars may nonetheless have presented significant opportunities for the development of microbial life.
