Abstract:The conversion of CO2 into renewable fuel (CH4) has significant environmental and economic benefits. Graphene-supported single-atom catalysts (SACs) show promise as electrocatalysts for the carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). In this study, using spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we investigate the potential for converting CO2 to CH4 on the representative SACs, specifically graphene-supported TM-N-S (transition metal-nitrogen-sulfur). The results show that TM-N-S can break the scaling relationship between the adsorption energy of *CHO and *OCH2. The free energy profiles indicate that among the candidate TM-N-S SACs, Fe, Co, and Ni-N-S stand out with low overpotentials of 0.23, 0.40, and 0.39 V, respectively. Compared with the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), they exhibit higher CO2 selectivity and catalytic activity. Analysis of electronic structure and charge variations reveals the origin of CO2RR activity and the binding strength between catalyst and intermediate. This work uncovers the potential mechanism of CO2RR, providing valuable insights into the conversion of CO2 to CH4 via TM-N-S catalysis and offering novel perspectives for the design and screening of efficient SACs for CO2RR.

Graphene-Based Single-Atom Catalysts for Electrochemical CO2 Reduction: Unraveling the Roles of Metals and Dopants in Tuning Activity

Abstract:Discovering electrocatalysts that can efficiently convert carbon dioxide (CO2) to valuable fuels and feedstocks using excess renewable electricity is an emergent carbon-neutral technology. A single metal atom embedded in doped graphene, i.e., single-atom catalyst (SAC), possesses high activity and selectivity for electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) to CO, yet further reduction to hydrocarbons is challenging. Here, using density functional theory calculations, we investigate stability and reactivity of a broad SAC chemical space with various metal centers (3d transition metals) and dopants (2p dopants of B, N, O; 3p dopants of P, S) as electrocatalysts for CO2R to methane and methanol. We observe that the rigidities of these SACs depend on the type of dopants, with 3p-coordinating SACs exhibiting more severe out-of-plane distortion than 2p-coordinating SACs. Using CO adsorption energy as a descriptor for CO2R reactivity, we narrow down the candidates and identify seven SACs with near-optimal CO binding strength. We then elucidate full reaction mechanisms towards methane and methanol generation on these identified candidates and observe highly dopant-dependent activity and rate-limiting steps, divergent from conventional mechanistic understanding on metallic surfaces, calling into question whether previous design principles established on metals are directly transferrable to SACs. Consequently, we find that zinc embedded in boron-doped graphene (Zn-B-C) is a highly active catalyst for electrochemical CO2R to C1 hydrocarbons. Our work reveals the opportunities of tuning SAC reactivity via engineering dopants and metals and highlights the importance of re-elucidating CO2R reaction mechanisms on SACs towards unearthing new design principles for SAC chemistry.

Abstract:In the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), single atom catalysts (SACs) supported on carbon materials have exhibited high activity and selectivity. However, the carbon supports are mainly graphene and carbon nanotubes, which are composed of sp(2)-hybridized carbon. Graphdiyne with sp-hybridization has been investigated as a promising carbon material for various catalytic reactions. In this study, the effect of sp-hybridization on graphdiyne was investigated using density functional theoretical (DFT) calculations for the CO2RR reactivity of Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn SACs supported on graphdiyne (M-graphdiyne). Among them, Co- graphdiyne exhibits a high activity and selectivity for CH3OH product, with remarkably low free energy barrier of 0.31 eV, which is superior to SACs supported on graphene with sp(2)-hybridization. The d-band center and atomic number of the metal atom, and the charge redistribution on sp-hybridization exert significant influence to the energy of intermediates, which are key to understanding the activity and selectivity of SACs in CO2RR.

Abstract:AbstractSingle‐atom catalysts (SACs) are of great interest because of their ultrahigh activity and selectivity. However, it is difficult to construct model SACs according to a general synthetic method, and therefore, discerning differences in activity of diverse single‐atom catalysts is not straightforward. Herein, a general strategy for synthesis of single‐atom metals implanted in N‐doped carbon (M1‐N‐C; M=Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) has been developed starting from multivariate metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The M1‐N‐C catalysts, featuring identical chemical environments and supports, provided an ideal platform for differentiating the activity of single‐atom metal species. When employed in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, Ni1‐N‐C exhibited a very high CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) up to 96.8 % that far surpassed Fe1‐, Co1‐ and Cu1‐N‐C. Remarkably, the best‐performer, Ni1‐N‐C, even demonstrated excellent CO FE at low CO2 pressures, thereby representing a promising opportunity for the direct use of dilute CO2 feedstock.

Abstract:A variety of atomically dispersed transition-metal-anchored nitrogen-doped carbon (M–N–C) electrocatalysts have shown encouraging electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) performance, with the underlying fundamentals of central transition-metal atom determined CO2RR activity and selectivity yet remaining unclear. Herein, a universal impregnation-acid leaching method was exploited to synthesize various M–N–C (M: Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) single-atom catalysts (SACs), which revealed d-orbital electronic configuration-dependent activity and selectivity toward CO2RR for CO production. Notably, Ni–N–C exhibits a very high CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 97% at −0.65 V versus RHE and above 90% CO selectivity in the potential range from −0.5 to −0.9 V versus RHE, much superior to other M–N–C (M: Fe, Co, and Cu). With the d-orbital electronic configurations of central metals in M–N–C SACs well elucidated by crystal-field theory, Dewar–Chatt–Duncanson (DCD) and differential charge density analysis reveal that the vacant outermost d-orbital of Ni2+ in a Ni–N–C SAC would benefit the electron transfer from the C atoms in CO2 molecules to the Ni atoms and thus effectively activate the surface-adsorbed CO2 molecules. However, the outermost d-orbital of Fe3+, Co2+, and Cu2+ occupied by unpaired electrons would weaken the electron-transfer process and then impede CO2 activation. In situ spectral investigations demonstrate that the generation of *COOH intermediates is favored over Ni–N–C SAC at relatively low applied potentials, supporting its high CO2-to-CO conversion performance. Gibbs free energy difference analysis in the rate-limiting step in CO2RR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) reveals that CO2RR is thermodynamically favored for Ni–N–C SAC, explaining its superior CO2RR performance as compared to other SACs. This work presents a facile and general strategy to effectively modulate the CO2-to-CO selectivity from the perspective of electronic configuration of central metals in M–N–C SACs.

Abstract:Abstract Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising candidates to catalyze electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) due to maximized atomic utilization. However, products are usually limited to CO instead of hydrocarbons or oxygenates due to unfavorable high energy barrier for further electron transfer on synthesized single atom catalytic sites. Here we report a novel partial-carbonization strategy to modify the electronic structures of center atoms on SACs for lowering the overall endothermic energy of key intermediates. A carbon-dots-based SAC margined with unique CuN 2 O 2 sites was synthesized for the first time. The introduction of oxygen ligands brings remarkably high Faradaic efficiency (78%) and selectivity (99% of ECR products) for electrochemical converting CO 2 to CH 4 with current density of 40 mA·cm -2 in aqueous electrolytes, surpassing most reported SACs which stop at two-electron reduction. Theoretical calculations further revealed that the high selectivity and activity on CuN 2 O 2 active sites are due to the proper elevated CH 4 and H 2 energy barrier and fine-tuned electronic structure of Cu active sites.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts (SACs) often present outstanding activity due to their high ratio of low-coordinated metal atoms and can be applied to the activation of strong chemical bonds such as C[triple bond, length as m-dash]O. Herein, we investigate the potential usage of a single-atom catalyst, in which isolated cobalt atoms are supported on porous graphitic carbon nitride (Co/g-C3N4), for CO oxidation. Based on the adsorption/co-adsorption energies of O2, CO, 2O2, CO + O2 and 2CO, the screening criteria and the reaction mechanisms of CO oxidation, including the Eley-Rideal, New Eley-Rideal, Langmuir-Hinshelwood, and termolecular Eley-Rideal mechanisms, are established and compared. In particular, the energy barriers of the rate-limiting steps for the CO oxidation process by all possible reaction pathways are in a range from 0.21 to 0.59 eV, suggesting that the Co/g-C3N4 catalyst can boost CO oxidation at low temperature. Moreover, the preparation of the SAC (Co/g-C3N4) by using CoCl2 as an appropriate metal precursor and the stability (up to 600 K) are evaluated by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The high stability and excellent activity of the Co/g-C3N4 SAC for CO oxidation offer a high possibility of clean energy production.
Can Metal–Nitrogen–Carbon Single-Atom Catalysts Boost the Electroreduction of Carbon Monoxide?

Abstract:Metal-nitrogen-carbon single-atom catalysts (SACs) have exhibited substantial potential for CO2 electroreduction. Unfortunately, the SACs generally cannot generate chemicals other than CO, while deep reduction products are more appealing because of their higher market potential, and the origin of governing CO reduction (COR) remains elusive. Here, by using constant-potential/hybrid-solvent modeling and revisiting Cu catalysts, we show that the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism is of importance for *CO hydrogenation, and the pristine SACs lack another site to place *H, thus preventing their COR. Then, we propose a regulation strategy to enable COR on the SACs: (I) the metal site has a moderate CO adsorption affinity; (II) the graphene skeleton is doped by a heteroatom to allow *H formation; and (III) the distance between the heteroatom and the metal atom is appropriate to facilitate *H migration. We discover a P-doped Fe-N-C SAC with promising COR reactivity and further extend this model to other SACs. This work provides mechanistic insight into the limiting factors of COR and highlights the rational design of the local structures of active centers in electrocatalysis.
MXene-based single atom catalysts for efficient CO2RR towards CO: A novel strategy for high-throughput catalyst design and screening

Abstract:A top-down strategy is performed to design Ti3C2O2 MXene-based single atom catalysts (SACs) considering the coordination environment and active metal center. A total of 50 SAC candidates composed of 25 transition metals (TMs) on N, S or N, N co-coordinated Ti3C2O2 (NS/NN-Ti3C2O2) are designed and screened for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to CO. Consequently, 36 TM-NS/NN-Ti3C2O2 structures with considerable stability show stable side-on/end-on CO2 chemisorption, which are then selected for further investigation of CO2RR performance. Analysis on the limiting potential of CO production and the competition with HCOOH production, CO reduction, and hydrogen evolution reaction indicates Ru-NS-Ti3C2O2 and Co-NN-Ti3C2O2 as outstanding catalysts for CO2RR to CO. In actual electrocatalysis, Ru-NS-Ti3C2O2 exhibits an excellent electric field responding effect with ultra-low reaction energies at potentials of −0.80–0 V vs SHE, thus surpassing most of the reported catalysts by far. The two-dimensional descriptor corresponding to the relationship between SACs-intermediate interaction and CO2RR performance, within the near-optimal region of −0.30 < binding energy (E b(COOH)) < 0.19 eV and −0.30 < E b(CO) < 0 eV, is demonstrated for rapid screening of candidate catalysts. This work highlights Ti3C2O2 based N, S co-coordination Ru SAC as an outstanding electrocatalyst for CO2RR to CO, and provides a feasible strategy for rational design and screening of CO2RR catalysts.

Abstract:Developing Cu single-atom catalysts (SACs) with well-defined active sites is highly desirable for producing CH4 in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction and understanding the structure-property relationship. Herein, a new graphdiyne analogue with uniformly distributed N2-bidentate (note that N2-bidentate site = N^N-bidentate site; N2 ≠ dinitrogen gas in this work) sites are synthesized. Due to the strong interaction between Cu and the N2-bidentate site, a Cu SAC with isolated undercoordinated Cu-N2 sites (Cu1.0/N2-GDY) is obtained, with the Cu loading of 1.0 wt%. Cu1.0/N2-GDY exhibits the highest Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 80.6% for CH4 in electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 at −0.96 V vs. RHE, and the partial current density of CH4 is 160 mA cm−2. The selectivity for CH4 is maintained above 70% when the total current density is 100 to 300 mA cm−2. More remarkably, the Cu1.0/N2-GDY achieves a mass activity of 53.2 A/mgCu toward CH4 under −1.18 V vs. RHE. In situ electrochemical spectroscopic studies reveal that undercoordinated Cu-N2 sites are more favorable in generating key *COOH and *CHO intermediate than Cu nanoparticle counterparts. This work provides an effective pathway to produce SACs with undercoordinated Metal-N2 sites toward efficient electrocatalysis.
The role of supported dual-atom on graphitic carbon nitride for selective and efficient CO 2 electrochemical reduction

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction of CO2 into value-added fuels and chemicals using single atom (SACs) or dual-atom catalysts (DACs) has been extensively studied, but the reaction mechanism and design rules are still unclear. Here, we studied the role of dual-metal atoms on graphite carbon nitride (M1M2@g-CN, M1M2 = CuCu, FeFe, RuRu, RuCu, RuFe, CuFe) for selective and efficient CO2 electrochemical reduction based on density functional theory. Our results show that CO2RR on RuRu@g-CN catalyst prefers the *COOH pathway, while for CuCu@g-CN, FeFe@g-CN, RuCu@g-CN, RuFe@g-CN, CuFe@g-CN catalysts, the *OCHO pathway is more suitable. Among all the DACs combinations, we found that RuCu@g-CN and RuFe@g-CN are the most promising electrocatalysts for CO2RR with a lower limiting potential, which is attributed to the synergistic effect of different O- and C-affinity of the heterocenters in DACs. The selectivity of RuCu@g-CN and RuFe@g-CN to the production of CH4 is better than that of H2 evolution. In addition, we also found that the adsorption free energy of intermediate on heteroatomic DACs can be predicted by those on homoatomic DACs, which can be used to further predict the limiting potential.

Abstract:Abstract Developing effective catalysts based on earth abundant elements is critical for CO 2 electroreduction. However, simultaneously achieving a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) and high current density of CO ( j CO ) remains a challenge. Herein, we prepare a Mn single-atom catalyst (SAC) with a Mn-N 3 site embedded in graphitic carbon nitride. The prepared catalyst exhibits a 98.8% CO FE with a j CO of 14.0 mA cm −2 at a low overpotential of 0.44 V in aqueous electrolyte, outperforming all reported Mn SACs. Moreover, a higher j CO of 29.7 mA cm −2 is obtained in an ionic liquid electrolyte at 0.62 V overpotential. In situ X-ray absorption spectra and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the remarkable performance of the catalyst is attributed to the Mn-N 3 site, which facilitates the formation of the key intermediate COOH * through a lowered free energy barrier.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed nitrogen-coordinated transition-metal sites supported on graphene (TM-N4-C) offer promising potential for the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR). However, a few TM-Nx-C single-atom catalysts (SAC) are capable of reducing CO2 to multielectron products with high activity and selectivity. Herein, using density functional theory calculations, we investigated the electrocatalytic performance of a single TM atom embedded into a defective BCN nanosheet for CO2RR. The N and B atom co-coordinated TM center, namely, TM-B2N2, constructs a symmetry-breaking site, which strengthens the overlapping of atomic orbitals, and enables the linear CO2 to be curved and activated, compared to the weak coupling of CO2 with the symmetric TM-N4 site. Moreover, the TM-B2N2 sites play a role of dual-atom active sites, in which the TM atom serves as the carbon adsorption site and the B atom acts as the oxygen adsorption site, largely stabilizing the key intermediates, especially *COOH. The symmetry-breaking coordination structures shift the d-band center of the TM atom toward the Fermi level and thus facilitate CO2 reduction to hydrocarbons and oxygenates. As a result, different from the TM-N4-C structure that leads to CO as the major product, the Ni atom supported on BCN can selectively catalyze CO2 conversion into CH4, with an ultralow limiting potential of -0.07 V, while suppressing the hydrogen evolution reaction. Our finding suggests that introduction of a nonmetal active site adjacent to the metal site provides a new avenue for achieving efficient multi-intermediate electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:Critically, the central metal atoms along with their coordination environment play a significant role in the catalytic performance of single-atom catalysts (SACs). Herein, 12 single Fe, Mo, and Ru atoms supported on defective graphene are theoretically deigned for investigation of their structural and electronic properties and catalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) performance using first-principles calculations. Our results reveal that graphene with vacancies can be an ideal anchoring site for stabilizing isolated metal atoms owing to the strong metal-support interaction, forming stable TMCx or TMNx active centers (x = 3 or 4). Six SACs are screened as promising NRR catalyst candidates with excellent activity and selectivity during NRR, and RuN3 is identified as the optimal one with an overpotential of ≥0.10 V via the distal mechanism.

Abstract:The highly active and selective electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) can be exploited to produce valuable chemicals and fuels and is also crucial for achieving clean energy goals and environmental remediation. Decorated single-atom catalysts (D-SACs), which feature synergistic interactions between the active metal site (M) and an axially decorated ligand, have been extensively explored for the CO2RR. Very recently, novel double-atom catalysts (DACs) featuring inverse sandwich structures were theoretically proposed and identified as promising CO2RR electrocatalysts. However, the experimental synthesis of DACs remains a challenge. To facilitate the fabrication and to realize the potential of these novel DACs, we designed a D-SAC system, denoted as M1@gra+Cuslab. This system features a graphene layer with a vacancy-anchored SAC, all stacked on a Cu(111) surface, thereby embodying a Cu slab-supported inverse sandwich M-graphene-Cu structure. Using density functional theory calculations, we evaluated the stability, selectivity, and activity of 27 M1@gra+Cuslab systems (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt, or Au) and showed five M1@gra+Cuslab (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Rh, or Pd) systems exhibit optimal characteristics for the CO2RR and can potentially outperform their SAC and DAC counterparts. This study offers a new strategy for developing highly efficient CO2RR D-SACs with an inverse sandwich structural moiety.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction to higher-value hydrocarbons beyond C1 products has attracted much attention recently. Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are regarded as promising CO2 reduction electrocatalysts. However, most SACs only show activity to C1 products. In this work, we considered the activity and the synergetic effect of dual active sites for metal SACs supported on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as CO2 reduction electrocatalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed. First, by using the adsorption energies of CO* on the metal site and that of H* on the nitrogen site as bi-descriptors, we predicted seven out of 14 metal centers have the propensity to generate beyond CO products. To further evaluate the catalyst activity on beyond CO product formation, we established reaction pathways towards ethylene through M/N or M/C. Ru has the best performance (the limiting potential is −0.90 V) by taking M/N as active sites. A dual volcano-shaped plot is built up based on the CO adsorption energies on metal sites, which can be used to indicate whether M/C or M/N shows better performance for a specific metal center. Our work shed light on developing criteria to guide the design of CO2 reduction electrocatalysts with dual active sites.

Abstract:Supported single atom catalysts (SACs), emerging as a new class of catalytic materials, have been attracting increasing interests. Here we developed a Ni SAC on microwave exfoliated graphene oxide (Ni-N-MEGO) to achieve single atom loading of similar to 6.9 wt%, significantly higher than previously reported SACs. The atomically dispersed Ni atoms, stabilized by coordination with nitrogen, were found to be predominantly anchored along the edges of nanopores (< 6 nm) using a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM). The Ni-N-MEGO exhibits an onset over potential of 0.18 V, and a current density of 53.6 mA mg(-1) at overpotential of 0.59 V for CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), representing one of the best non-precious metal SACs reported so far in the literature. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that the electrochemical CO2-to-CO conversion occurs more readily on the edge-anchored unsaturated nitrogen coordinated Ni single atoms that lead to enhanced activity toward CO2RR.
