Abstract:A novel selection principle was introduced by Dorantes-Aldama and Shakhmatov: a topological space $X$ is termed {\em selectively pseudocompact} if for any sequence $(U_n:n\in {\omega})$ of pairwise disjoint non-empty open sets of $X$, one can choose points $x_n\in U_n$ such that the sequence $(x_n:n\in {\omega})$ has an accumulation point. In this paper, we explore various versions of this principle when we permit the selection of finite, scattered, or nowhere dense sets instead of just singletons. We develop a method to prove that the aforementioned versions of selective pseudocompactness are indeed distinct from one another.

Abstract:The paper contains a very simple proof of the classical Hasumi's theorem that each usco mapping defined on an extremally disconnected space has a continuous selection. The paper also contains a very simple proof of a recent result about extension of densely defined continuous selections for compact-valued continuous mappings, in fact a generalisation of this result to all usco mappings with a regular range.

Abstract:We consider the optimization problem $(P_{A})$ $\inf_{x\in X}\{f(x)+g(Ax)\}$ where $f$ and $g$ are proper convex functions defined on locally convex Hausdorff topological vector spaces $X$ and $Y$, respectively, and $A$ is a linear operator from $X$ to $Y$. By using the properties of the epigraph of the conjugated functions, some sufficient and necessary conditions for the strong Fenchel duality and the strong converse Fenchel duality of $(P_{A})$ are provided. Sufficient and necessary conditions for the stable Fenchel duality and for the total Fenchel duality are also derived.

We present situations where behaves differently from Few characterization results are obtained by considering mappings into the Baire space. Several results are presented concerning critical cardinalities. In particular, we perform investigations assuming near coherence of filters (NCF) and semifilter trichotomy. Besides, is characterized using weakly groupable and related covers. We also exhibit certain game theoretic observations.

Abstract:We provide a direct proof of Agafonov's theorem which states that finite state selection preserves normality. We also extends this result to the more general setting of shifts of finite type by defining selections which are compatible the shift. A slightly more general statement is obtained as we show that any Markov measure is preserved by finite state compatible selection.

Abstract:In this paper, a new concept of selection operators on hyperspaces (subsets spaces) is introduced, and the existence theorems for several kinds of selection operators are proved. Using the methods of selection operators, we give a selection characterization of identically distributed multivalued random variables and completely solve the vector-valued selection problem for sequences of multivalued random variables converging in distribution. The regular selections and Markov selections for multivalued stochastic processes are studied, and a discretization theorem for multivalued Markov processes is established. A theorem on the asymptotic martingale selections for compact and convex multivalued asymptotic martingale is proved.

Abstract:Normed spaces appear to have very little going for them: aside from the hackneyed linear structure, you get a norm whose only virtue, aside from separating points, is the Triangle Inequality. What could you possibly prove with that? As it turns out, quite a lot. In this article we will start by considering basic convexity properties of normed spaces, and gradually build up to some of the highlights of Functional Analysis, emphasizing how these notions of convexity play a key role in proving many surprising and deep results.

Abstract: Given a *-homomorphism $\sigma: C(M)\to \mathscr{L}(\mathcal{H})$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ for a compact metric space $M$, a projection $P$ onto a subspace $\mathcal{P}$ in $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be essentially normal relative to $\sigma$ if $[\sigma(\varphi),P]\in \mathcal{K}$ for $\varphi\in C(M)$, where $\mathcal{K}$ is the ideal of compact operators on $\mathcal{H}$. In this note we consider two notions of span for essentially normal projections $P$ and $Q$, and investigate when they are also essentially normal. First, we show the representation theorem for two projections, and relate these results to Arveson's conjecture for the closure of homogenous polynomial ideals on the Drury-Arveson space. Finally, we consider the relation between the relative position of two essentially normal projections and the $K$ homology elements defined for them.

Abstract:We present a selection theorem for domains in $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n\ge 1$, which states that any tamed sequence of pointed connected open subsets admits a subsequence convergent to its own kernel in the sense of Carathéodory. Not only is this analogous to the well-known Blaschke selection theorem for compact convex sets, but it fits better in the study of normal families of holomorphic maps with varying domains and ranges.

Abstract:We establish a Fenchel-Moreau type theorem for proper convex functions f : X -> (L) over bar (0), where (X,Y,<.,.>) is a dual pair of Banach spaces and (L) over bar (0) is the space of all extended real-valued functions on a sigma-finite measure space. We introduce the concept of stable lower semi-continuity which is shown to be equivalent to the existence of a dual representation f(x) = sup(y is an element of L0(Y)) {< x, y > - f*(y)}, x is an element of X, where L-0(Y) is the space of all strongly measurable functions with values in Y, and <.,.> is understood pointwise almost everywhere. The proof is based on a conditional extension result and conditional functional analysis.

Abstract:For a probability P in R d its center outward distribution function F ± , introduced in V. Chernozhukov, A. Galichon, M. Hallin, and M. Henry ("Monge–Kantorovich depth, quantiles, ranks and signs," Ann. Stat. , vol. 45, no. 1, pp. 223–256, 2017) and M. Hallin, E. del Barrio, J. Cuesta-Albertos, and C. Matrán ("Distribution and quantile functions, ranks and signs in dimension d: a measure transportation approach," Ann. Stat. , vol. 49, no. 2, pp. 1139–1165, 2021), is a new and successful concept of multivariate distribution function based on mass transportation theory. This work proves, for a probability P with density locally bounded away from zero and infinity in its support, the continuity of the center-outward map on the interior of the support of P and the continuity of its inverse, the quantile, Q ± . This relaxes the convexity assumption in E. del Barrio, A. González-Sanz, and M. Hallin ("A note on the regularity of optimal-transport-based center-outward distribution and quantile functions," J. Multivariate Anal. , vol. 180, p. 104671, 2020). Some important consequences of this continuity are Glivenko–Cantelli type theorems and characterisation of weak convergence by the stability of the center-outward map.

Abstract:In a 1983 paper, Yannelis-Prabhakar rely on Michael's selection theorem to guarantee a continuous selection in the context of the existence of maximal elements and equilibria in abstract economies. In this tribute to Nicholas Yannelis, we root this paper in Chapter II of Yannelis' 1983 Rochester Ph.D. dissertation, and identify its pioneering application of the paracompactness condition to current and ongoing work of Yannelis and his co-authors, and to mathematical economics more generally. We move beyond the literature to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for upper semi-continuous local and global selections of correspondences, and to provide application to five domains of Yannelis' interests: Berge's maximum theorem, the Gale-Nikaido-Debreu lemma, the Gale-McKenzie survival assumption, Shafer's non-transitive setting, and the Anderson-Khan-Rashid approximate existence theorem. The last resonates with Chapter VI of the Yannelis' dissertation.

Abstract:In this note we show that the usual notion of fuzzy norm defined on a linear space is equivalent to that of quasiconcave function, in the sense that every fuzzy norm $N:X\times\mathbb{R}[0,1]$ defined on a (real or complex) linear space X is uniquely determined by a quasiconcave function $f:X\to[0, 1]$. We explore the minimum requirements that we need to impose to some quasiconcave function $f:X\to[0, 1]$ in order to define a fuzzy norm $N:X\times\mathbb{R}[0,1]$. Later we use this equivalence to prove some properties of fuzzy norms, like a generalisation of the celebrated Decomposition Theorem.

Definable Lipschitz selections for affine-set valued maps

Abstract:Whitney's extension problem, i.e., how one can tell whether a function $f : X \to \mathbb R$, $X \subseteq \mathbb R^n$, is the restriction of a $C^m$-function on $\mathbb R^n$, was solved in full generality by Charles Fefferman in 2006. In this paper, we settle the $C^{1,\omega}$-case of a related conjecture: given that $f$ is semialgebraic and $\omega$ is a semialgebraic modulus of continuity, if $f$ is the restriction of a $C^{1,\omega}$-function then it is the restriction of a semialgebraic $C^{1,\omega}$-function. We work in the more general setting of sets that are definable in an o-minimial expansion of the real field. An ingenious argument of Brudnyi and Shvartsman relates the existence of $C^{1,\omega}$-extensions to the existence of Lipschitz selections of certain affine-set valued maps. We show that if a definable affine-set valued map has Lipschitz selections then it also has definable Lipschitz selections. In particular, we obtain a Lipschitz solution (more generally, $\omega$-Hölder solution, for any definable modulus of continuity $\omega$) of the definable Brenner-Epstein-Hochster-Kollár problem. In most of our results we have control over the respective (semi)norms.
