Abstract:Background: Appropriate infant and young child feeding (IYCF) plays a crucial role in promoting the healthy growth of children. Currently, many Chinese urban parents are seeking care of children from the early childhood education (ECE) institutions, however, little is known about the feeding practices of infants and young children in ECE institutions. This study aims to investigate the complementary feeding practices for Chinese urban children aged 6-23 months in ECE institutions and explore potential factors influencing their feeding practices.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among primary caregivers of children aged 6-23 months in ECE institutions across 31 provinces in China from 1 March to 30 April 2023. Convenience sampling was used to recruit caregivers from centres of Gymboree Play & Music (an ECE institution). Self-administered questionnaires were designed using the online survey tool Sojump and distributed through WeChat platform, which collected information on 1) children's complementary feeding practices; 2) food frequency of seven food groups; 3) caregivers' feeding knowledge and practices; 4) frequency of children attended ECE classes and the primary caregivers' daily nurturing care time; 5) source of information on complementary feeding.Results: A total of 2731 children and their caregivers were surveyed, with 416 children aged 6-11 months and 2315 children aged 12-23 months. The prevalence of minimum dietary diversity (MDD), minimum meal frequency (MMF), and minimum acceptable diet (MAD) was 59.4, 60.6, and 39.2%, respectively. Only 17.3% caregivers believed that continued breastfeeding should be at two years or above, and 29.5% children were continuously breastfed at 12-23 months (CBF). The proportion of non-responsive feeding practices among caregivers ranged from 28 to 64%. Except for CBF, the prevalence of other key complementary feeding practices was higher among children who attending ECE classes than those not attending ECE classes (all P < 0.05). Moreover, children aged 12-23 months who received long-nursing care time (≥4h/d) had significantly higher MMF and MAD prevalence than those in short-nursing care time group (MMF = 66.2 vs. 58.8%, P = 0.0003; MAD = 44.2 vs. 38.3%, P = 0.0047).Conclusions: The complementary feeding practices of children aged 6-23 months in ECE institutions in urban China remained suboptimal, and non-responsive feeding practices among caregivers were common. The attendance of ECE classes and the caregivers' daily nurturing care time could be beneficial in ensuring children to comply with complementary feeding recommendations.

A Cohort Study of Infant Feeding Practices in City, Suburban and Rural Areas in Zhejiang Province, PR China

Abstract:Background Breastfeeding is the basis for appropriate nutrition for infants and is strongly supported by the Ministry of Health in China. However, there are differences in infant feeding practices in different areas of the country. The aim of this study was to compare the infant feeding practices and the prevalence of determinants of initiation and continuing to breastfeed until six months of age in city, suburb and rural areas in Zhejiang Province, PRC. Methods A longitudinal cohort study of infant feeding practices was undertaken in city, suburban and rural areas in 2004/2005. Mothers were recruited and interviewed before discharge from hospitals. A total of 1520 mothers were recruited into the study. Follow-up interviews were administered at 1, 3 and 6 months after birth to obtain details of infant feeding practices. Results 'Any breastfeeding' rates were high before discharge at all three locations, 96.5% in city, 96.8% in suburb and 97.4% in the rural area. The 'exclusive breastfeeding' rates in the city, suburban and rural areas before discharge were 38.0%, 63.4% and 61.0% respectively. By sixth months the 'any breastfeeding' rates had declined to 62.8%, 76.9% and 83.6% and the 'exclusive breastfeeding' rates had fallen to 0.2%, 0.5% and 7.2% in city, suburb and rural areas respectively. There were differences in feeding practices between the three locations, including the use of prelacteal feeds and the introduction of supplementary feeds. Conclusion Mothers who lived in the city were least likely to be 'exclusive breastfeeding' at discharge. At six months the city infants also had lower rates of 'any breastfeeding' and 'exclusive breastfeeding'.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:Development during the first two years of life is critical and has a lasting impact on a child's health. Poor infant and child nutrition can lead to deficiencies in essential micronutrients, which may cause a weakened immune system and lasting effects on children's growth and development. Recent studies in rural Shaanxi Province found an anemia prevalence of 54.3% among rural children aged six to twelve months. While new large-scale, quantitative research has begun to catalogue the extent of child malnutrition and anemia, no effort has yet been made to look more closely at the potential reasons for rural children's nutritional deficiencies through qualitative analysis. This study aims to elucidate some of the fundamental causes of poor complementary feeding practices that may lead to anemia among children in rural Shaanxi Province, China.METHODOLOGY:We interviewed sixty caregivers participating in a large survey on child health and nutrition. We conducted three waves of interviews with children's primary caregivers in seventeen rural villages within four nationally-designated poverty counties in the southern part of Shaanxi Province.RESULTS:The qualitative analysis reveals that poor complementary feeding practices are common across our sample. Information gathered from our interviews suggests that complementary feeding practices are impeded by two constraints: absence of understanding topics related to infant health and nutrition under caregivers, as well as inadequate sources of information on these topics. Poverty does not appear to constrain child feeding practices.CONCLUSION:Our results uncover lack of proper knowledge on infant and child nutrition among rural caregivers in China. This situation causes them to fail incorporating micronutrient rich foods in their children's diet. Age-appropriate complementary feeding can stimulate children's physical and cognitive development, but in its absence it leads to iron-deficiency anemia. We suggest that steps be taken to educate caregivers to improve complementary feeding of their infants and children.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Food consumption patterns of young children in China are not well known.OBJECTIVE:Characterised food groups consumed by infants and young children in urban China using data from the Maternal Infant Nutrition Growth (MING) study.DESIGN:One 24-h dietary recall was completed for 1,350 infants and young children (436 infants aged 6-11 months and 914 young children aged 12-35 months), who were recruited from maternal and child care centres in eight cities via face-to-face interviews with the primary caregiver. All foods, beverages and supplements reported were assigned to one of 64 food groups categorised into the following: milk and milk products, grains, vegetables, fruits, protein foods and desserts/sweets. The percentage of infants and young children consuming foods from specific food groups was calculated, regardless of the amount consumed.RESULTS:Less than half of infants consumed breast milk (47%), whereas 59% of infants consumed infant formula and 53-75% of young children consumed growing-up (fortified) milk. Rice was the number one grain food consumed after 6 months (up to 88%) and the consumption of infant cereal was low. About 50% of infants did not consume any fruits or vegetables, and 38% of young children did not consume any fruits on the day of the recall. Only 40% of all children consumed dark green leafy vegetables and even fewer consumed deep yellow vegetables. Eggs and pork were the most commonly consumed protein foods.CONCLUSIONS:The data provide important insight for developing detailed food consumption guidelines for this population group. Mothers of infants should be encouraged to continue breastfeeding after the first 6 months. Parents should be advised to offer a wide variety of vegetables and fruits daily, particularly dark green leafy and deep yellow vegetables and colourful fruits. The consumption of fortified infant cereal should be advocated to improve the iron intake of Chinese infants.
Do Infant Feeding Practices Differ Between Grandmothers and Mothers in Rural China? Evidence from Rural Shaanxi Province

Abstract:The overall goal of this study is to examine whether infant feeding practices differ between mothers and grandmothers in rural China. We randomly sampled 1383 caregivers of infants aged 18 to 30 months living in 351 villages across 174 townships in nationally designated poverty counties in rural areas. Results show that a high fraction of caregivers of 18- to 30-month-old children living in low-income areas of rural China do not regularly engage in positive infant feeding practices. Only 30% of children in our sample achieved adequate dietary diversity. Only 49% of children in our sample were fed meat in the day prior to survey administration. Few caregivers reported giving any vitamin supplements (such as calcium or iron supplements) to their children. We find that 33% of the children were cared for by grandmothers rather than mothers, and that grandmothers feed a less diversified diet to children than do mothers. Most (84%) caregivers rely solely on their own experiences, friends, and family members in shaping their feeding behaviors. Overall infant feeding practices are poor in rural China. Grandmothers engage in poorer feeding practices than do mothers. Grandmothers have improved their feeding practices compared to when their own children were young. Our results suggest shortcomings in the quality of infant feeding practices, at least in part due to an absence of reliable information sources.

Abstract:Background : Optimal feeding practice in the first year of life is crucial for the survival and health of infants, and has long-term consequences in later life. However, non-optimal feeding practices exist widely. The present study aims to explore various constraints to optimal feeding practices in the first year of life of infants in urban areas of Beijing, China. Methods : A cross-sectional study was conducted in urban areas of Beijing from 4 July to 20 August, 1998. Two hundred and fifty-one mothers of infants aged 6-12 months were chosen from six child health centers in three different urban districts in Beijing. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data regarding feeding practices and potentially related factors. Results : Feeding practice for most of the infants was in accordance with the national and international recommendations. However, the rate of incidence of exclusive breast-feeding at 3 months of age was lower than that recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO) (55.8%), and the introduction of solid/semisolid food before 4 months of age was found in approximately 19.3% of the infants. Cow's milk was given to 21.2% of infants from 6 months of age as the sole source of milk or as a supplement. Maternal education level (OR = 2.44, 95% CI: 1.42-4.19, P < 0.05), employment (OR = 2.05, 95% CI: 1.13-3.74, P < 0.05) and antenatal nonexclusive breast-feeding plans (OR = 4.10, 95% CI: 2.24-7.50, P < 0.001) were found to be correlated to inappropriate feeding practices. Conclusions : The feeding practices for most of the urban infants was found to be in accordance with the Chinese government and WHO recommendations; however, non-optimal feeding practices presenting as the early cessation of breast-feeding and the introduction of solid/semisolid foods existed. Information regarding optimal feeding practices should be disseminated to mothers and medical professionals in China, to ensure optimal infant health.
Feasibility of using WeChat to improve infant and young child feeding in rural areas in China: A mixed quantitative and qualitative study

Abstract:Background Appropriate infant and young child feeding practices are the basis for child nutrition. In China, WeChat is gradually changing the channels through which people receive information. The paper aims to explore the feasibility of using WeChat to improve infant and young child feeding in rural China. Methods A mixed-methods study was carried out in Huzhu County, Qinghai province, China. We conducted two cross-sectional surveys with children aged 6–23 months and their caregivers in 2012 (N = 1804) and 2018 (N = 754), respectively. Quantitative data were collected on feeding knowledge and practices, caregiver’s use of smartphones and WeChat. Qualitative data were from 33 semi-structured interviews with pregnant women and mothers. In addition, we developed a WeChat feeding health education platform and asked women about their experiences with using it. Results In both cross-sectional surveys, less than 10% of caregivers knew that breastfeeding can be continued up to two years, less than 50% knew the accurate duration of exclusive breastfeeding, and only around 20% knew meat can be given to children from the age of 6–8 months. Similarly, the feeding practices were suboptimal and most key infant feeding practices did not change over the years. Only around 30% of caregivers ever received feeding information during pregnancy or after delivery in both surveys. Around 50% of caregivers received information from their relatives and friends, followed by 30% from health facilities and communities. More than 80% of mothers were currently using both a smartphone and the WeChat app, and 75.4% of them were willing to receive feeding information from WeChat official accounts. The WeChat feeding health education platform developed by our study team was generally well accepted by women. Conclusions There was an absence of accurate information sources on infant feeding and child nutrition. WeChat could be a potential way to deliver infant feeding recommendations to pregnant women and mothers in rural China. Abstract:Investigation of the main pharmacokinetic parameters of adenine derivative VMA-99-82 in rats showed large values of the half-life (T1/2 = 11.03 h) and the mean retention time of drug molecules in the organism (MRT = 9.53 h). A high rate of the drug concentration decrease in the plasma determines a small value of the area under the pharmacokinetic curve (AUC = 74.96 mg h/ml). The total distribution volume (V(d) = 10.61 l/kg) is 15.8 times greater than the volume of extracellular fluid in the body of rat, which is indicative of a high ability of VMA-99-82 to be distributed and accumulated in the organs and tissues. The absolute bioavailability of VMA-99-82 is 66%.
The Role of Maternal and Child Characteristics in Chinese Children’s Dietary Intake Across Three Groups

Abstract:Abstract Objective To examine whether mothers’ early-life food insecurity (ELFI), pressuring to eat feeding practices (PEP), and child effortful control (EC) are associated with child dietary intake within and across three Chinese ethnic groups. Method Participants included 119 Chinese international immigrants in the United States, 230 urban nonmigrant, and 468 rural-to-urban migrant mothers and preschoolers in China. Mothers reported on their ELFI, PEP, and their children’s EC and dietary intake. Results Controlling for maternal and child body mass index, age, and gender, multiple group path analyses revealed that maternal ELFI was positively associated with PEP in all groups, which in turn was positively associated with child unhealthy diet in all groups, but negatively associated with child fruits and vegetables (F&V) consumption in the urban nonmigrant group only. Also, EC was positively associated with child F&V diet for all groups. Moreover, the indirect effect of ELFI on children’s unhealthy diet through PEP was significant only for immigrant children with lower levels of EC, but not those with higher levels of EC. Conclusions Our findings highlighted the long-lasting effect of mothers’ ELFI on their feeding and child eating. Mothers’ pressuring to eat played a central role in the association between their past experiences and children’s diet. Also, children’s poor EC abilities might exacerbate the adverse effect of mothers’ ELFI through PEP, resulting in more unhealthy eating. These findings can contribute to the design of contextually based intervention/prevention programs that promote young children’s healthy eating through maternal feeding practices and children’s EC abilities.

Abstract:【Objective】 To study the situation of infant and young child feeding(IYCF) practice in research areas of China,to compare the IYCF indicators between research areas and other developing countries,so as to find out the existing problems in China.【Methods】 A cross-sectional study with three-stage stratified random sampling method was conducted,and totally 3 708 caregivers of children under 2 years old from 40 counties in central and western China were selected to investigate their feeding practices with standard questionnaire designed by UNICEF.8 indicators listed in the WHO document "Indicators for assessing infant and young child feeding practice" were analyzed and compared with the data of other 46 developing countries published by WHO in 2010.【Results】 The rates of early initiation of breastfeeding,exclusive breastfeeding under 6 months,continued breastfeeding at 1 year,and continued breastfeeding at 2 years in research areas of China,which were ranked 34,39,44 and 45 respectively in 47 countries,were lower than the average of other developing countries.The rate of introduction of solid,semi-solid or soft foods and minimum dietary diversity were ranked in top 20%,but the complementary feeding was generally too early.【Conclusions】 Great efforts should be made to improve early initiation of breastfeeding and continued breastfeeding in these areas.Also measures should be taken to change the practice of breastfeeding with water and early complementary food intake.Providing the knowledge of IYCF and health education should play an important part in improving infant and young child feeding practice in China.
Practices for introducing complementary foods in Taiwan: A nationwide survey from 2013 to 2016

Abstract:Background/purpose: Introducing complementary foods to infants is a critical stage in their healthy growth and development process. In this study, we analyzed the feeding habits and choices of caregivers in Taiwan during this essential transition period. Methods: Data from the 2013-2016 Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan were analyzed. Using a multistage stratified sampling technique, we collected data through questionnaires on the feeding practices, challenges, and information sources associated with complementary feeding. We also investigated the timing of introducing various foods. Certain feeding indicators recommended by the World Health Organization were modified and used for analysis. Results: Among 439 caregivers of infants aged 2-24 months, complementary feeding typically began at 5 months, and it primarily began with cereals and pureed foods. At 6-8 months of age, 98.29% of the infants received these foods. Only 48.39% of infants aged 6-24 months consumed eggs or flesh foods. Among the primary challenges for caregivers were concerns regarding infants' adaptation to new foods (38.2%), refusal of foods by infants (37.1%), and uncertainty regarding which foods to introduce (11.4%). The main sources of information were friends and family (46.9%), the Internet (46.5%), and baby care books (35.6%). Notably, approximately 51% of the respondents used commercial baby foods. Conclusion: In Taiwan, although the majority of infants begin complementary feeding on time, the introduction of eggs and flesh foods is typically delayed. Given the growing reliance on the Internet in the modern age, accurate feeding information should be disseminated online.
Micronutrients supplementation and infant feeding practices in the poor rural areas of Shaanxi province:status and correlates

Abstract:Objective To examine the status and correlates of infant feeding practices in poor rural areas of Shaanxi province.Methods By using a structural questionnaire,a survey on infant feeding practices and participation in prenatal and postnatal care management was conducted among primary caregivers of 1 765 infants aged 6-12 months randomly selected from poor areas of Qinba mountainous region of southern Shaanxi province.Logistic model was adopted to analyze correlates of micronutrients supplementation and infants feeding practices.Results Nutrition education among pregnant and puerperal women could promote micronutrients supplementation of the infants (odds ratio [OR] =1.413,P ≤ 0.01),but there were no significant correlations between nutrition education and whether breastfeeding and complementary feeding being consistent with the criterion of World Health Organization.Child with low birth weight,being the first child,and with a mother being not the primary caregiver were risk factors of infant breastfeeding (P ≤ 0.01 for all).The risk factors of complementary feeding behavior were young age of an infant,being the first child,and with a mother having the education less than 9 years (P ≤ 0.01 for all).Conclusion The prenatal and postnatal care and children's early health services (especially nutrition knowledge and feeding practices)need to be improved to address the problems in infants feeding practices and infants health in poor rural areas of Shaanxi province.
Common Feeding Practices Used by Chinese Caregivers of 6-10-Month-Old Infants: A Behavioral Observation Study in Shaanxi Province

Abstract:Objective: To explore the feeding practices and feeding environment of Chinese families with 6-10-month-old infants. Design: One day of caregiver-recorded feeding occasions. Setting: Homes in Shaanxi, China. Participants: Families recruited using convenience sampling. Variables measured: Videos were coded for feeding practice frequency and acceptance rate, feeding environment, and responsiveness to infant fullness cues and eating pace. Analysis: Wilcoxon rank sum tests examined the differences in feeding practice use based on caregiver type, infant sex, and infant weight status. Results: Twenty-eight families provided videos for coding. The most commonly observed feeding practices were opening the mouth, giving instructions, and interfering with the child's actions. Prompts to eat were accepted 86.9% of the time. Overweight infants' caregivers used significantly more coercive prompts to eat than did caregivers of healthy-weight infants (P < 0.05). Mothers used more autonomy-supportive prompts to eat than did fathers (P < 0.05). Early, active, and late infant fullness cues were captured in 25.6%, 34.8%, and 8.5% of videos, respectively. 53.6% of caregivers fed at the right pace, whereas 14.5% and 31.9% fed too slow or too fast, respectively. Approximately 5.5% of videos had a screen on, and 33.5% of videos included at least 1 other distraction during the meal. Conclusions and implications: Differences in feeding practices among caregivers suggest that targeted advice may further improve feeding practices. Improving the caregiver's ability to identify satiety cues and respond to infant eating speed may also reduce the risk of overfeeding.
Comparison of nutrition and feeding practices between 8-month-old infant of local and migrants in Beijing community

Abstract:Objective To study the feeding practices and child nutrition of different household registration infant aged 8-month in surveyed area,and to find the existing problems and provide evidence for feeding intervention.Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted.Infants aged 8-month were selected who accepted a conventional community child health services in Beijing in 2014,excluding those of premature birth,low birth weight and congenital birth defects and heart,liver,kidney,blood diseases babies.Questionnaire on infant feeding practices and nutrition were surveyed and analyzed.Results Several indicators related to the local population and migrants were surveyed:complementary feeding rates before 6 months were 52％ and 65.1％ (P＜0.05),early initiation of breastfeeding were 41.8％ and 21.9％ (P＜0.05),minimum dietary diversity rate were 57.7％ and 36.7％ (P＜0.05),Bottle feeding rate were 78.6％ and 54.4％ (P＜0.01),mean of length for age z-score (LAZ) were 0.93 ± 1.071 and 0.54 ±-1.130 (P＜0.01),mean of height for head circumference z-score (HCZ) were 0.44±0.910 and 0.11±0.978 (P＜0.01),underweight rate were 0.5％ and 4.1％ (P＜0.01),prevalence of anemia were 27.6％ and 47.3％ (P＜0.01),respectively.The mothers' feeding knowledge in local population was better than the migrants.Conclusion Feeding practices and nutrition of 8-month-old infant of migrants are not optimistic in the surveyed area.

Abstract:Introduction:Early childhood feeding environments and practices not only affect children's nutritional status but also provide children with a variety of external stimulations to affect the development of the child's brain, especially for the first 1,000 days of children. The relationship between early childhood development (ECD) and feeding practices during the dietary transitional period has not previously been described.Method:This study used quantitative survey data from the Integrated Early Childhood Development Project to investigate this association between ECD and feeding practices during the dietary transitional period in poor rural areas of China. Data concerning the child and family characteristics and feeding practices were collected through the questionnaire completed by caregivers. Developmental delays were explored through a five-pronged, structured, parent-completed Age and Stage Questionnaire. The chi-squared test and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to explore the associated factors in ECD.Results:The results showed that 33.6% of children had at least one area of developmental delay during the dietary transitional period. Of all five regions evaluated, the prevalence of fine motor developmental delays was highest (17.7%), followed by communication (14.9%), problem-solving (13.8%), personal-social skills (11.9%), and gross motor (11.8%), respectively. Significant predictors of increased odds of developmental delay included types of complementary foods (OR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.53-0.94), adequate feeding frequency (OR = 0.69, 95% CI = 0.52-0.90), and breastfeeding time and bottle feeding (OR = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.50-0.88).Discussion:According to the results, a high prevalence of developmental delay was observed in children during the dietary transitional period in the rural areas of China. The feeding practices of children were associated with their developmental status, including factors such as inadequate feeding frequency, types of complementary foods, breastfeeding duration, and low family income. These findings highlight the focus and potential direction for early identification and intervention.

Abstract:Objective To understand the market of the children food in rural areas,understand the knowledge and attitude of the caretakers of the children to the complementary food,and to find the problems in the rural market of the complementary food.Methods The survey site were selected from Beijing,Zhejiang,Henan,Gansu and Shanxi rural.512 caretakers of 4～24 months children were chosen to finish a questionnaire about complementary feeding,shopping behavior and food buying for the children.A county retail food store,a township retail food store and three village food stores were selected in every site.The bosses of the chosen retail stores also finished a questionnaire including the following information: list food items,which parents often buying fool for their children less than 2 years old,the price of these food etc.The focus group discussion was also conducted in each sites.The attitude of the caretakers of the children to the children food market was discused.Results The snacks with the price of 0.1～0.2 Yuan were the parent's favorite selection in rural areas of Gansu,Shanxi and Henan Province.However,most of these low-price infants food which sold in retail store,didn't have the claim of manufacture factory,manufacture date,shelf life and food composition claim.The main factors which parents concernlet about were high quality,good taste,children's enjoyable,reasonable price,and of benefit to children's health.Conclusion To encourage the rural market to develop high quality low price infants food is very important.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the food purchase practice and its influencing factors of families living in urban China,provide basic information for developing effective nutrition education program.Methods Nine thousand nine hundred and seventy six child parent pairs were selected from Guangzhou,Shanghai,Jinan and Haerbin using a stratified multi stage cluster random sampling method.Questinnaire survey was used for data collection.SAS statistical software was used for analyzing 9 464 child parent pairs.Results Mothers were mainly responsible for food purchase in 69.8% of the investigated families while only 26.3% of fathers were responsible for food purchase.Food freshness,hygiene,nutrition and children's preferences were the major influencing factors for food purchase.20.7% children requested for buying certain foods while 49.9% parents refer to their children' s suggests when buying foods.Conclusions Mothers were the major decision maker for food purchase in urban China while children influenced family food purchase.Nutrition education program should be launched in order to improve their ability of food selection.
Infant Feeding Beliefs, Attitudes, Knowledge and Practices of Chinese Immigrant Mothers: An Integrative Review of the Literature

Abstract:Chinese are a fast-growing immigrant population group in several parts of the world (e.g., Australia, Canada, Europe, Southeast Asia, United States). Research evidence suggests that compared to non-Hispanic whites, individuals of Asian-origin including Chinese are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes at a lower body mass index (BMI). These risks may be possibly due to genetic differences in body composition and metabolic responses. Despite the increasing numbers of Chinese children growing up in immigrant families and the increasing prevalence of obesity among Chinese, little research has been focused on children of Chinese immigrant families. This integrative review synthesizes the evidence on infant feeding beliefs, attitudes, knowledge and practices of Chinese immigrant mothers; highlights limitations of available research; and offers suggestions for future research. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we searched four electronic academic/research databases (CINAHL, Medline, PsycINFO, and PubMed) to identify peer-reviewed, full-text papers published in English between January 2000 and September 2017. Only studies with mothers 18+ years old of normally developing infants were included. Of the 797 citations identified, 15 full-text papers were retrieved and 11 studies (8 cross-sectional studies, 3 qualitative studies) met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. Reviewed studies revealed high initiation rates of breastfeeding, but sharp declines in breastfeeding rates by six months of age. In addition, reviewed studies revealed that the concomitantly use of breast milk and formula, and the early introduction of solid foods were common. Finally, reviewed studies identified several familial and socio-cultural influences on infant feeding beliefs and practices that may increase risk of overweight and obesity during infancy and early childhood among Chinese children of immigrant families. Nonetheless, as only 11 studies were identified and because the majority of studies (<i>n</i> = 8) were conducted in Australia, additional research including longitudinal studies, and studies conducted in countries with large Chinese immigrant population are needed to further identify and understand influences on Chinese immigrant mothers' beliefs, attitudes, and practices related to infant feeding that may increase risk of child overweight and obesity. This information is needed to develop interventions tailored to the beliefs and needs of this fast-growing immigrant group and aimed at promoting healthy infant feeding practices to prevent childhood overweight and obesity.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the awareness of complementary feeding among infant caregivers in rural areas.Methods Focus group discussion was conducted among 197 caregivers of 6～24 months infants and young children in 5 counties of 5 provinces.Results Most caregivers expressed opinions as follows: "Infants should be added complementary food at age 4～6 months";"Infants could eat meat at age 1 year or later, or after the growth of teeth is completed,or after they are weaned";"Food for infants and young children should be cooked specifically";"Food cooked at home are more dominant in safety and hygiene than the food from market".The caregivers obtained feeding knowledge mainly from doctors and books.There was difference in awareness of caregivers among these 5 areas.Conclusion Measures to strengthen guidance and education on complementary feeding for caregiver of infants and young children should be implemented according to the situations of different areas to improve the effect of complementary feeding and to promote growth and development of infants and young children in rural areas.
