Abstract:A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to evaluate the total environmental impact of state-of-the-art waste-to-energy (WtE) in Belgium with respect to recovered energy utilization and addition of carbon capture and storage (CCS). Four energy output scenarios were modeled on Umberto LCA software using primary data of mass and energy flows surrounding the six incinerators at the considered WtE plant and predefined processes from the Ecoinvent 3.6 database. The normalized LCA results suggest that by utilizing all the recovered energy as high-pressure steam, the WtE plant can avoid an equivalent annual environmental impact value of approximately 21200, 36800, 6700, 15800, 37000, and 6900 average European citizens in the impact categories 'climate change,' 'freshwater and terrestrial acidification,' 'freshwater eutrophication,' 'photochemical ozone creation,' 'respiratory effects, inorganics,' and 'terrestrial eutrophication,' respectively. The 'Electricity and Steam with CCS' scenario resulted in the most avoided environmental impact in the impact category 'climate change.' However, in all other impact categories, it resulted in less avoided environmental impact compared to the 'Steam' scenario. The comparative analysis showed that 19 out of the 24 LCA results varied by more than 50% between a region-specific and a region- and fuel-specific model, thus quantifying the influence of scenario uncertainty, introduced by the normative choice of substituted processes in LCA modeling. This study exemplifies the environmental benefit WtE technology can realize by substituting conventional energy production processes that are reliant on fossil resources, while performing its primary function that is reducing the volume of non-recyclable waste, destroying hazardous organic components it contains, and recovering useful materials from it.

Assessing the supply chain management of waste-to-energy on green circular economy in China: an empirical study

Abstract:One of the industries that makes a significant contribution to the overall amount of greenhouse gas emissions around the globe is agriculture. In this regard, the use of bioenergy in the agricultural and food processing industries might benefit from the implementation of circular economy techniques. Despite the fact that just roughly 9% of the global economy is circular, there have been worldwide efforts to improve that reality. The linear economy, commonly known as the "take-make-use-dispose" model, is in sharp contrast to the circular economy, also known as "grow-make-use-restore," which seeks to influence the flow of materials and energy in order to maximize the benefits to the environment and minimize any associated costs. Garbage-to-energy, also known as WTE, is the focus of both academics and businesses as a direct result of the increasingly diminishing number of energy supplies and the ever-increasing amount of garbage. This project intends to turn trash into profit, lessen the impact waste has on the environment, and generate energy from biowaste by conceptualizing a focus on the supply chain characteristics of waste-to-energy processing. The adoption of a waste-to-energy (WTE) supply chain as a district energy system should be a viable solution toward a circular industrial economy that can solve energy consumption, waste management, and greenhouse gas emission concerns all at once. In the framework of a "circular economy," this study investigates how the management of waste-to-energy supply chains impacts the performance of businesses. The present investigation makes use of life cycle assessments, technical innovation, waste-to-energy conversion, and capacities related to circular economies. The study makes use of data obtained from an online survey that was administered between March 2021 and November 2021 to employees of 285 representative samples drawn from 457 European enterprises and firms that have accepted the concepts of the circular economy. The data is examined using a technique known as partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM for short). The findings indicate that waste-to-energy serves as a mediator between the life cycle assessment and the capabilities of the circular economy and that sustainable supply chain management, sustainable supply chain design, technological progress, and waste-to-energy all have positive effects on these metrics.

Abstract:A growing global population and rising living standards are producing ever greater quantities of waste, while at the same time driving ever-larger demand for energy, especially electricity, or new emerging markets, such as hydrogen in more industrialised countries. A key solution to these challenges of waste disposal, rising energy and hydrogen demand is BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage); the generation of bioenergy - in the form of electricity (WtE) or hydrogen (WtH2), as well as heat - from the thermochemical processing of waste. The addition of carbon capture and storage (CCS) to WtE or WtH2 has the potential to make waste a zero or even negative emissions energy source, thus contributing to the removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. This work undertakes a pre-screening of different BECCS configurations based on state of the art technologies and then performed an assessment of representative cases in UK for WtE and WtH2, necessary to understand if novel waste thermal treatment processes may become potential alternatives or improvements to current WtE plants when retrofitted with CCS. A systematic and comprehensive examination of different key Life Cycle Assessment methodological aspects reveals the importance of the functional unit and allocation approach in determining the preferred pathway in a specific context.

Abstract:Waste-to-energy (WtE) could prevent the production of up to 50 million tons of CO2 emissions that would otherwise be generated by burning fossil fuels. Yet, support for a large deployment of WtE plants is not universal because there is a widespread concern that energy from waste discourages recycling practices. Moreover, incineration plants generate air pollution and chemical waste residuals and are expensive to build compared to modern landfills that have appropriate procedures for the prevention of leakage of harmful gasses. In the context of the EU, this paper aims to provide a picture of the actual role of WtE as a disposal option for municipal solid waste (MSW), enabling it to be utilized as a source of clean energy, and to address two important aspects of the debate surrounding the use of WtE; namely, (i) the relationship between WtE and recycling, and (ii) the effects of decentralization, waste mobility, and plant ownership. Finally, it reviews the role of the EU as a supranational regulator, which may allow the lower government levels (where consumer preferences are better represented) to take decisions, while taking spillovers into account.

Abstract:This paper proposes an overarching review of national municipal waste management systems and waste-to-energy as an important part of it in the context of circular economy in the selected countries in Europe. The growth of population and rising standards of living means that the consumption of goods and energy is increasing. On the one hand, consumption leads to an increase in the generation of waste. On the other hand, the correlation between increased wealth and increased energy consumption is very strong as well. Given that the average heating value of municipal solid waste (MSW) is approximately 10 MJ/kg, it seems logical to use waste as a source of energy. Traditionally, waste-to-energy (WtE) has been associated with incineration. Yet, the term is much broader, embracing various waste treatment processes generating energy (for instance, in the form of electricity and/or heat or producing a waste-derived fuel). Turning waste into energy can be one key to a circular economy enabling the value of products, materials, and resources to be maintained on the market for as long as possible, minimising waste and resource use. As the circular economy is at the top of the EU agenda, all Member States of the EU (including the EEA countries) should move away from the old-fashioned disposal of waste to a more intelligent waste treatment encompassing the circular economy approach in their waste policies. Therefore, the article examines how these EU policies are implemented in practice. Given that WtE traditionally is attached to the MSW management and organisation, the focus of this article is twofold. Firstly, it aims to identify the different practices of municipal waste management employed in selected countries and their approaches in embracing the circular economy and, secondly, the extent to which WtE technologies play any role in this context. The following countries, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, and the UK were chosen to depict a broad European context.

Abstract:This work presents a methodology integrating Non-Linear Programming (NLP) for multi-objective and multi-period optimization, addressing sustainable waste management and energy conversion challenges. It integrates waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies such as Anaerobic Digestion (AD), Incineration (Inc), Gasification (Gsf), and Pyrolysis (Py), and considers thermochemical, technical, economic, and environmental considerations through rigorous non-linear functions. Using Mexico City as a case study, the model develops waste management strategies that balance environmental and economic aims, considering social impacts. A trade-off solution is proposed to address the conflict between objectives. The economical optimal solution generates 1.79M$ with 954 tons of CO 2 emissions while the environmental one generates 0.91M$ and reduces emissions by 54%, where 40% is due to gasification technology. Moreover, the environmentally optimal solution, with incineration and gasification generates 9500 MWh/day and 5960 MWh/day, respectively, demonstrates the capacity of the model to support sustainable energy strategies. Finally, this work presents an adaptable framework for sustainable waste management decision-making.

Abstract:The consistent rise of the per capita waste generation rate has led to an escalation of waste quantities and the need to expand waste disposal methods. Efforts to develop clean and affordable energy systems are increasingly linked to waste-to-energy as part of the transition to a circular economy (CE). A resource-efficient waste-to-energy business model within a CE offers a variety of environmentally friendly waste management options based on their overall environmental impacts but also makes efficient use of available resources and technologies to convert different types of waste into energy, which helps reduce the adverse effects on the environment and create additional energy sources. This research aims to identify innovative waste management solutions to foster the implementation of CE and a more resource-efficient business model. The research methodology is based on qualitative and quantitative research, triangulation, material flow assessment, and systems dynamics. The value of this study is within the analysis of existing waste-to-energy plant case studies to identify a set of recommendations and appropriate business models for the countries that are at an early stage of evaluation of such facilities. This study found that waste-to-energy plants are critical to achieving the EU's waste disposal targets by 2035. The findings highlight the importance of supporting mechanisms in the waste sector, such as structural funds, as the industry primarily focuses on societal health and safety and environmental protection, alongside resource efficiency and circularity potential.

Abstract:The integration of renewable energy sources into sustainable development practices has become increasingly important. The municipal solid waste (MSW) utilisation presents a promising renewable energy source, provided that it is combined with modern technologies to optimise its energy conversion. The global population growth and the corresponding rise in living standards have resulted in increased consumption of goods and energy. Whilst such consumption boosts economic development, it also contributes to a significant increase in waste generation. In this article, the possibility of using MSW for energy production is examined, along with an overview of the production of waste and treatment activities in the European Union (EU). Europe generates 1.66 billion tonnes of waste yearly, with construction, demolition and MSW being a major contributor. The European Commission’s Waste Legislative Package aims for 60% reuse and recycling readiness by 2025 and a 65% target by 2030, focussing on landfill assessment, waste recycling promotion and other initiatives. In 2020, there were 504 waste to energy (WtE) plants in Europe with 61 million tonnes (137 kg per capita) of total incineration capacity. France has the most WtE (124) plants, whilst Germany has the highest capacity for waste incineration. The total energy produced from waste in 2019 was 41.2 MTOE (million tonnes of oil equivalent), with nearly half of that total was accounted by MSW. This includes non-renewable waste, MSW renewable and non-renewable waste and industrial waste. This statistics represents around 2.5% of the EU’s overall energy supply. The majority of energy recovery is used to generate electricity in electricity-only facilities or either in combined heat and power (CHP). In 2020, there was a 69 million tonnes or 58% decline in the amount of MSW that was landfilled in the EU, which represents 4.0% decline on an annual average. Germany recycled most MSW with 66% approximated recycling rate in 2020. Only eight EU countries have recycling rates that are higher than 50%. On average, WtE plants in the EU monitor around 60% of biogenic CO2 emissions, with the remaining 40% being fossil CO2 emissions. In the light of the EU’s prioritisation of the circular economy, it is imperative that all Member States, including EEA countries, shift from traditional waste disposal methods towards more intelligent waste treatment strategies, such as gasification and pyrolysis, which embody circular economy principles in their waste management policies.

Abstract:Stimulated by dwindling reserves of fossil fuels and sustainable energy production, Waste-to-energy (WtE) has started playing an increasingly important role in the recovery of energy from municipal solid waste (MSW). A number of WtE technologies, such as pyrolysis, gasification, and incineration, are being developed. However, selecting a more environmentally sustainable option is still made difficult, and comprehensive comparisons of the existing WtE technologies are fairly rare. In this chapter, the development of different WtE technologies, in particular for pyrolysis and gasification, is introduced. This is followed by a life cycle assessment assessing the environmental sustainability of different WtE technologies. First, seven potential WtE systems involving thermal conversion (pyrolysis, gasification, incineration) and energy utilization (steam cycle, gas turbine/combined cycle, internal combustion engine) are modeled as a theoretical analysis. The results are then compared with four types of commercial plants (incineration, pyrolysis, gasification, gasification-melting) as a case study. The establishment of a life cycle Energy–Environment–Economy model is discussed, as well as a case study comparing landfill (with and without landfill gas recovery) and incineration MSW treatment technologies. Finally, the future prospects for developing WtE technologies are discussed.

Abstract:Inadequate municipal solid waste (MSW) management threatens public health and the environment. The waste-to-energy (WtE) route allows the production of electricity, heat, and other valuable chemical products. WtE consists of incineration, gasification, pyrolysis, and some emerging technologies. This study follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to conduct a bibliometric analysis of WtE technologies for MSW management research. Scopus-indexed articles were examined between 1971 and 2023. Four periods were defined and analyzed in terms of their most significant results. In addition, the most pertinent journals (Waste Management, Chemosphere, and Waste Management & Research) ranked first, second, and third, respectively. Moreover, the top contributor countries include one in America (the United States), three in Asia (China, Japan, and India), and five in Europe (Spain, Italy, Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom). Throughout a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) case study, the environmental performance of gasification and incineration were compared as relevant technologies for treating MSW were contrasted. Gasification excelled in seven environmental parameters, suggesting that developing strategies for MSW gasification on a commercial scale should prioritize this aspect. Finally, the energy potential was assessed, which provided valuable information on the societal benefits of WtE technologies in various sectors, such as education, health, and electromobility. Under their respective contexts, stakeholders should enhance MSW sorting policies, pretreatment methods, and emerging valorization options. The growing global interest in WtE requires a social, environmental, and economic evaluation before implementation.

Abstract:The management of biodegradable waste in landfills is associated to a range environmental impacts and refers to a linear model regarded as unsustainable. At the same time, many agricultural and urban soils present low organic matter content. Composting is emerging as a good practice for converting organic waste into a new resource able to improve soil properties, thus providing regulation Ecosystem Services. Considering a territorial metabolism perspective, this work discusses the potential contribution to regional planning of a transferable methodology for quantifying environmental impacts and benefits associated to waste management, based on a combined use of Life Cycle Assessment and Geographic Information Systems, and considering Ecosystem Services deriving from the application of compost in agricultural soils. The approach was tested through a site-dependent analysis based on primary data, referring to year 2019 and focusing on the Veneto Region, Italy. Results indicate that direct benefits associated to the use of compost and the thermal energy to district heating are compensating from 29 % to 51 % of the impacts associated to compost production, while waste transports represent the largest share of the impacts, covering between 52 % and 78 % of the total flows considered. The proposed methodology is applied for comparing the reference condition to alternative scenarios, in the perspective of providing support in Strategic Environmental Assessment procedures. In this context, results shown markedly lower impacts associated to compost production, with respect to organic waste treatment, for 5 out of 6 of the considered categories (freshwater eutrophication 100:1, climate change 5:1), with the notable exception of water resource depletion. Scenarios produced are discussed with respect to the choice between centralized and non-centralized plants, and the characterization of potential benefits at the territorial scale associated to compost use for urban green infrastructures. With respect to this latter point, results showed an underdeveloped use of compost-related ES flow, compared to its capacity, suggesting an interest for further research aimed at estimating compost requirements by urban and peri-urban soils.

Abstract:Sustainable development and the circular economy mandate efficacious management of waste. The annually increasing volumes of municipal solid waste pose a formidable global challenge. Waste-to-energy conversion, utilizing thermochemical or biochemical technologies, presents a viable solution for mitigating waste disposal concerns. This study conducts a thorough analysis of extant projects to evaluate the economic viability and environmental benefits across various technologies. Employing a self-compiled, unique database, our examination spans enterprises operational from 1980 to 2022, including 37 of the most representative facilities across Europe, North America, and East and Southeast Asia. Economic efficiency is gauged through the levelized cost of electricity generated by these installations, while environmental impacts are assessed based on the statistics on prevented greenhouse gas emissions. The methodology encompasses correlation and techno–economic analyses and expert evaluation. Contrary to conventional wisdom, our findings challenge the ubiquity of scale effects among technologies and the presumed decline in electricity generation costs with newer technologies. However, they corroborate the enhanced environmental benefits of recent technological advancements. The insights derived from this research are poised to inform strategic municipal solid waste management planning in Russia and beyond, offering a foundation for the design of new facilities. The scientific novelty of this work lies in its holistic approach to analyzing the ecological and economic efficiencies of all extant technologies.

Abstract:The concept of circular economy supports mitigation of climate change and other environmental pressures to the planet. Circulating materials in anthropogenic processes come with the risk of accumulating hazardous substances and compounds. In this concept, waste incineration or waste-to-energy (WtE) is a necessary technology to remove these compounds from the life cycle. In this mini-review, contaminants of major importance in the flue gas from waste incineration plants and their environmental impact are discussed. Air pollution of WtE is often seen as the most relevant environmental impact of this treatment option. The emission values parameter set for different countries is presented and compared. The most stringent legally set of emission values could be found in parts of Europe and South Korea. Japan also permits similar strict values when authorising individual incineration plants. In North America, the values are partially less strict as the best available technologies in Europe suggest being possible. Emerging economies, such as India and China, have shown efforts to improve their environmental protection standards but still have room to improve. This could be set in relation to other industrial emitting processes and therefore could be used to assess the relevance of this industry sector to the national emission inventories.

Abstract:Municipal solid waste (MSW) pyrolysis and gasification are in development, stimulated by a more sustainable waste-to-energy (WtE) option. Since comprehensive comparisons of the existing WtE technologies are fairly rare, this study aims to conduct a life cycle assessment (LCA) using two sets of data: theoretical analysis, and case studies of large-scale commercial plants. Seven systems involving thermal conversion (pyrolysis, gasification, incineration) and energy utilization (steam cycle, gas turbine/combined cycle, internal combustion engine) are modeled. Theoretical analysis results show that pyrolysis and gasification, in particular coupled with a gas turbine/combined cycle, have the potential to lessen the environmental loadings. The benefits derive from an improved energy efficiency leading to less fossil-based energy consumption, and the reduced process emissions by syngas combustion. Comparison among the four operating plants (incineration, pyrolysis, gasification, gasification-melting) confirms a preferable performance of the gasification plant attributed to syngas cleaning. The modern incineration is superior over pyrolysis and gasification-melting at present, due to the effectiveness of modern flue gas cleaning, use of combined heat and power (CHP) cycle, and ash recycling. The sensitivity analysis highlights a crucial role of the plant efficiency and pyrolysis char land utilization. The study indicates that the heterogeneity of MSW and syngas purification technologies are the most relevant impediments for the current pyrolysis/gasification-based WtE. Potential development should incorporate into all process aspects to boost the energy efficiency, improve incoming waste quality, and achieve efficient residues management.
Waste to energy, indispensable cornerstone for circular economy: A mini-review

Abstract:This mini-review aims at proving that waste-to-energy (WtE) is an essential cornerstone for circular economy (CE). Based on literature, the history of thermal waste treatment over the last 150 years is investigated, from open burning to WtE with resource recovery and final sink function. The results show that in the past incineration solved the issues it was designed for but often created new and sometimes even worse problems: The introduction of incineration in the 19th century improved urban sanitation, decreased waste volume and prolonged operational life of landfills. But it also polluted the environment, triggering an unprecedented scientific and engineering effort of all stakeholders. Today, WtE is one of the best investigated and optimized technologies in waste management. It enables the recovery of energy as heat and electric power and facilitates the 'cleaning' of cycles by the destruction of hazardous organic substances. Recent developments in resource recovery from WtE residues allow to recycle metals and, in the case of sewage sludge, even phosphorus by thermal recycling. Combined with carbon capture and storage technology, WtE stands for a quantifiable contribution to greenhouse gas reduction. Today, WtE is indispensable to reach the goals of CE, namely recycling of energy and materials, supplying safe final sinks for persistent organic substances and minimizing the need for sinks for hazardous inorganic substances.
Comparison of Waste-to-energy Technologies of Gasification and Incineration Using Life Cycle Assessment: Case Studies in Finland, France and China

Abstract:Waste-to-Energy (WtE) has gradually constituted one of the most important options to achieve energy recovery from municipal solid waste (MSW). However, the environmental sustainability of a specific WtE system varies with used technologies and geographic differences. As a result, three representative WtE systems are compared using life cycle assessment (LCA): a gasification-based WtE plant in Finland, mechanical-grate incineration in France, and circulating fluidized bed incineration in China. Results show that the overall environmental performance of the gasification system is better than incineration. The use of gasification technology, attributed to an intermediate syngas purification step, can provide benefits of both reducing the stack emissions and increasing the energy efficiency. Regional waste management, especially related to MSW caloric value and emission regulation, are determining factors for a preferable performance of the incineration in France over that in China. Sensitivity and uncertainty analyses further address key variations such as choice of MSW composition, basis of displaced electricity, energy recovery mode, and application of “best-available technology” dedicated to incineration. It is found that the most sensitive parameters influencing the LCA results are: electricity recovery, CO2 emission, and NOx emission. In the future, use of the source-separated high caloric waste combined with a more stringent emission standard can efficiently improve MSW incineration in China. Bottom ash recycling for metals and materials is highly applicable regarding incineration in France. This presented study can overall contribute to the development of specific WtE technology and local waste management plan for decision-makers.

Abstract:Waste-to-Energy (WtE) has started playing an increasingly important role in the recovery of energy from municipal solid waste (MSW). A number of WtE technologies are being developed. However, selecting a more environmentally sustainable option is difficult due to data limitation and methodological inconsistencies. Using life cycle assessment (LCA) as a tool, this paper aims to identify key factors influencing the potential environmental impacts of four representative WtE technologies, namely the incineration (S1), pyrolysis (S2), gasification (S3), and gasification coupled with ash melting (S4). The systems are constructed using inventory data based on on-site operation of several industrial-scale reference plants. A comprehensive sensitivity analysis is conducted, assessing a range of critical input parameters, processes, operating conditions and modelling assumptions. The results demonstrate that all analysed WtE systems exhibit environmental benefits (i.e. negative environmental impacts) for most of the impacts, while S3 seems to be more optimal due to an intermediate syngas cleaning process, which results in both reduced emissions and increased energy recovery. Parameters driving the environmental impacts are energy recovery efficiency, feedstock variability, NOx and CO2 emissions at stack, and recycling of metals. Moreover, the overall ranking of different WtE systems is strongly dependent on operating conditions, such as effectiveness of the air pollution control process, utilization pathway of pyrolysis char, and to a lesser extent, bottom ash management (landfill or recycling). The LCA modelling conditions, such as substituted source of electricity, choice of functional unit and time frame are also shown to significantly affect the quantified environmental performance. Finally, the study highlights the directions, towards which, efforts should be focused throughout all stages of each WtE technology to obtain further improvements.
Quantification of global waste heat and its environmental effects

Abstract:Waste heat is a major source of recoverable loss in societal energy use, offering significant potential for reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. A number of studies have been carried out to determine the size of the available resource but have been limited in scope or confined to the status quo. This work reports a method to quantify future global waste heat emissions from the Power Generation, Industry, Transport, and Buildings sectors, and investigates their environmental effects. Four projected energy landscapes (World Energy Outlook 2016: 1. Current Policies; 2. New Policies; 3. 450-scenario. 4. 100% renewable energy penetration) were simulated to assess the amount of waste heat produced in different sub-sectors in the year 2030. The impact of CO2 radiative forcing and various technological shifts are reported. Total waste heat emissions are found to account for 23.0–53.0% of global input energy depending on year and scenario, with a range of theoretical and economic recovery potentials of 6–12% and 6–9% respectively. Further insight is gained into the waste heat landscape through analysis of temperature and sectoral distributions, and identification of hotspots for targeted waste heat recovery. When considering emissions from 2014 to 2030, the integrated radiative forcing of CO2 is found to be 13 times greater than that of waste heat, primarily attributable to the former’s cumulative nature. Full recovery of the theoretical potential is found to lead to a 10–12% reduction in the combined forcing of CO2 and waste heat over this period, mainly due to a reduction in CO2 emissions. Under a conservative carbon tax, this reduction is estimated to offer potential economic savings of $20-77bn/year. A 10% increase in the penetration of solar/wind/tidal hydroelectric power and electric vehicles are found to decrease global waste heat losses in liquid and gaseous streams by 5% and 0.7–2.0%, respectively; retrofitting of Carbon Capture and Storage to power plants decreases CO2 radiative forcing, outweighing the increase in thermal radiative forcing from additional waste heat streams.

Abstract:Amid the urgent global imperatives concerning climate change and resource preservation, our research delves into the critical domains of waste management and environmental sustainability within the European Union (EU), collecting data from 1990 to 2022. The Method of Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) results reveal a resounding commitment among EU member states to diminish their reliance on incineration, which is evident through adopting green technologies and environmentally conscious taxation policies, aligning with the European Union's sustainability objectives. However, this transition presents the intricate task of harmonizing industrial emissions management with efficient waste disposal. Tailoring waste management strategies to accommodate diverse consumption patterns and unique circumstances within individual member states becomes imperative. Cointegrating regressions highlighted the long-run relationship among the selected variables, while Feasible Generalized Least Squares (FGLS) and Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) estimates roughly confirmed MMQR results. ML analyses, conducted through two ensemble methods (Gradient Boosting, GB, and Extreme Gradient Boosting, XGBoost) shed light on the relative importance of the predictors: in particular, environmental taxation, consumption-based emissions, and production-based emissions greatly contribute to determining the variation of combustible renewables and waste. This study recommends that EU countries establish monitoring mechanisms to advance waste management and environmental sustainability through green technology adoption, enhance environmental taxation policies, and accelerate the renewable energy transition.
