Abstract:Incorporation of Ionic liquid into a metal organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a new platform to construct heterogeneous bifunctional catalytic systems for the chemical capture and conversion of CO2 with epoxides. Herein, imidazolium-based ionic liquid decorated UiO-66 type MOF (P3[BCMIm]Br@UiO-66) was successfully constructed via solvothermal assembly of the carboxyl-functionalized imidazolium ionic liquid ligand, terephthalic acid ligand and Zr(IV) ions. It exhibits the highest catalytic activity upon the cycloaddition of CO2 (98.2% conversion of Propylene oxide, 99% selectivity to Propylene Carbonate) under optimized conditions (2.2 Mpa CO2, 1.0 wt.%, 110 °C, reaction time 2 h). Notably, the catalytic performance of P3[BCMIm]Br@UiO-66 outperformed that of the original UiO-66 materials and [BCMIm]Br. [BCMIm]Br@UiO-66 retained good catalytic performance for up to five recycling runs with only a little loss in catalytic activity. Futhermore, several additional coupling reactions were investigated with other epoxides as substrates.

Abstract:Two new ionic liquid immobilized MOFs, Fe‐MIL‐101‐3N(BuBr) and Fe‐MIL‐101‐N(Bnme2)Br, were prepared by modifying amino groups in Fe‐MIL‐101‐NH2 with bromobutane and quaternary ammonium salt. They can be used as an efficient catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides to afford a variety of cyclic carbonate derivatives. And they can be easily recovered and reused for at least 5 times without loss of catalytic activity. In this work, two ionic liquids (ILs) immobilized metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs), Fe‐MIL‐101‐3N(BuBr) and Fe‐MIL‐101‐N(Bnme2)Br, were obtained by modifying amino groups in Fe‐MIL‐101‐NH2 with bromobutane and quaternary ammonium salt. The ionic liquid immobilized MOFs have Lewis acid sites (Fe3+) and nucleophilic sites (Br−), which can synergistically catalyze the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides. Various cyclic carbonate derivatives were obtained in excellent yields under the optimal conditions. Additionally, we found that Fe‐MIL‐101‐N(Bnme2)Br exhibited the highest catalytic activity and it can be easily recovered and reused for at least 5 times without loss of catalytic activity. Our method of preparing bifunctional catalysts provides a new approach to design catalysts for the chemical conversion of CO2.

Abstract:The synergistic effect between multiple active sites is a powerful approach to wield control in catalysis. However, it remains a challenge to integrate various active species simultaneously into a porous material in an organized and cooperative manner. Herein, by virtue of the tunable secondary building units (SUBs) and pore structures of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), we demonstrate a straightforward way to integrate multiple catalytic components into MOFs via mechanochemical synthesis, whereby the phase separation of various components can be avoided. The multi-functionality in the resulting MOFs came from doping the metal nodes with another metal species and encapsulating molecular catalysts in the cavities, as demonstrated by partially replacing the zinc ions with cobalt ions and enveloping ionic liquids (IL) in the ZIF-8 (Zn) framework to yield IL@ZIF-8(Zn/Co). It is shown that compared to the homometallic MOF, the bimetallic one together with the introduced ionic liquid brings about the opportunity to take advantage of the synergism. This is reflected in the superior performance of IL@ZIF-8(Zn/Co) with respect to the related individual components in the industrially relevant cycloaddition of epoxides and CO2. Given that the strategy presented is applicable to other MOF materials and molecular catalysts, our approach, therefore, opens a new avenue for the introduction of multi-functionality into MOFs for various potential applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of microporous materials that have been highlighted with fast and selective sorption of gas molecules; however, they are at least partially unstable in the scale-up process. Here, we report a rational shaping of MOFs in a scalable architecture of fiber sorbent. The long-standing stability challenge of MOFs was resolved by using stable metal oxide precursors that are subject to controlled surface oxide dissolution-growth chemistry during the Mg-based MOF synthesis. Highly uniform MOF crystals are synthesized along with the open-porous fiber sorbents networks, showing unprecedented cyclic CO2 capacities in both flue gas and direct air capture (DAC) conditions. The same chemistry enables an in situ flow synthesis of Mg-MOF fiber sorbents, providing a scalable pathway for MOF synthesis in an inert condition with minimal handling steps. This modular approach can serve both as a reaction stage for enhanced MOF fiber sorbent synthesis and as a "process-ready" separation device.

Abstract:Herein, we reported a facile strategy for the preparation of trifunctional ionic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) incorporating imidazolium cation functionalities. This strategy exploits the Debus-Radziszewski reaction to create the cationic imidazole ring by postsynthetic modification, meanwhile introducing exchangeable counteranions. On the basis of this strategy, MIL-101-IMOH-Br- has been synthesized, which combines Lewis acidic sites, Brønsted acidic sites, and nucleophilic centers to achieve catalysis for the carbon dioxide-epoxide cycloaddition into cyclocarbonate without any cocatalyst and solvent.

Abstract:CO2 capture and conversion have garnered worldwide attention in view of the objective of sustainable development and carbon neutrality. Recently, ionic liquid-functionalized metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) or covalent–organic frameworks (COFs) (MOFs/COFs) offer a rising platform for the effective CO2 separation from specific gas mixture and CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals. Benefiting from the synergistic effect offered by ILs and MOFs/COFs, IL-MOFs/COFs exhibit better exceptional adsorption/catalytic performance than pristine MOFs/COFs or ILs. Herein, the review intends to establish a primary database for the recently emerging IL-MOFs/COFs in CO2 capture and conversion, covering the functionalization strategies, interaction between ILs and MOFs/COFs, and the representative applications, aiding in the rational design and optimization of novel IL-MOFs/COFs with exceptional properties for real-world application. Along this line, CO2 capture from different systems (CO2/N2, CO2/CH4, and CO2/C2H2) and further conversion into multiproducts (cyclic carbonate, hydrocarbon, alcohol, and others), along with the mechanism insight into ILs and MOFs/COFs in such adsorption/catalytic processes are summarized and discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects of IL-MOFs/COFs in such emerging and topical fields have been elaborated.

Abstract:Porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal platforms for heterogeneous photocatalysts toward CO2 reduction. To further explore photocatalytic MOF systems, it is also necessary to consider their ability to fine-tune the microenvironments of the active sites, which affects their overall catalytic operation. Herein, a kind of ionic liquid (IL, here is 3-butyric acid-1-methyl imidazolium bromide, BAMeImBr) was anchored to iron-porphyrinic Zr-MOFs with different amounts to obtain ILx@MOF-526 (MOF-526 = Zr6O4(OH)4(FeTCBPP)3, FeTCBPP = iron 5,10,15,20-tetra[4-(4'-carboxyphenyl)phenyl]-porphyrin, x = 100, 200, and 400). ILx@MOF-526 series was designed to investigate the effects of the microenvironmental and electronic structural modification on the efficiency and selectivity of the photochemical reduction of CO2 after introducing IL fragments. Compared to parent MOF-526, the production and selectivity of CO were greatly improved in the absence of any photosensitizer under visible light by the ILx@MOF-526 series. Among them, the CO yield of IL200@MOF-526 was up to 14.0 mmol g-1 within 72 h with a remarkable CO selectivity of 97%, which is superior to that of MOF-526 without BAMeIm+ modification and other amounts of BAMeIm+ loaded. Furthermore, density functional theory calculations were performed to study the mechanism of the CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to generate feedstocks for chemical products (e.g., carbon monoxide, CO) offers a highly attractive method for achieving the closure of the carbon cycle. Ionic liquids (ILs)-functionalized Cu-based catalyst Cu2O-HKUST-1/IL1/PTFE was developed, configuring metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) based materials with high adsorption and multiple active sites. The modified electrocatalysts exhibited high specific surface area, strong CO2 adsorption capacity, abundant active sites, and fast charge transfer rate. The nucleophilic active site of deprotonation at the C2 site in imidazole ILs further improved the selectivity of proton migration and CO product generation, which was verified through DFT calculations for the low Gibbs free energy of the generated intermediate interactions. In addition, the hydrophobic interface constructed by PTFE facilitated the inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and significantly improved the efficiency of CO2 electroreduction. The Cu2O-HKUST-1/IL1/PTFE catalyst manifested a high C1 Faraday efficiency (FE) up to 96.5% and in particular 92.7% for FECO at -1.7 V vs RHE. The present work provides an efficient strategy for configuring ILs-functionalized MOFs-based materials with good hydrophobic interfaces to enhance the efficiency of CO2 electroreduction to C1 products.

Abstract:The use of homogeneous and polluting halides as nucleophilic cocatalysts lowers the economy and benignity of the CO2-epoxide cycloaddition over heterogeneous Lewis-acid catalysts like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Creating net positive charge at frameworks is a reasonable strategy to heterogenize halide anions within MOFs, but it is still challenging to achieve high halide loading while keeping adequate porosity. In this article, we report a facile approach to ionic MOFs with high halide content and improved catalytic activity. The catalysts were prepared by reacting azide-tagged MIL-101 with alkyne-tagged organic bromide salts. The efficient azide–alkyne click reaction within the mesoporous MOF allows quantitative cationization of the linkers, and the resultant bifunctional ionic MOFs contain one halide ion per metal center to the benefit of the cooperative catalysis. Catalytic studies suggest that the effects of varying the cationic groups and halide anions in the confined ionic space are different from those observed for homogeneous organic halides. The highest catalytic activity was demonstrated for the MOF having the smallest cationic group (quaternized trimethyl ammonium) and the intermediately nucleophilic halide (Br−). The catalyst also outperforms the ionic MOF catalysts reported prior to this work.

Abstract:The rational integration of multiple functional components into a composite material could result in enhanced activity tailored for specific applications. Herein, imidazolium-based poly(ionic liquids (denoted as polylLs) have been confined into the metal organic framework (MOF) material MIL-101 via in situ polymerization of encapsulated monomers. The resultant composite polyILs@MIL-101 exhibits good CO2 capture capability that is beneficial for the catalysis of the cydoaddition of CO2 with epoxides to form cyclic carbonates at subatmospheric pressure in the absence of any cocatalyst. The significantly enhanced activity of polylLs@MIL-101, compared to either MIL-101 or polylLs, is attributed to the synergistic effect among the good CO2 enrichment capacity, the Lewis acid sites in the MOF, as well as the Lewis base sites in the polylLs.

Abstract:Direct utilization of low-concentration CO 2 is of importance to mitigate the global warming and reduce energy consumption. Herein, a new bi-functional ionic liquid-grafted material was fabricated for CO 2 /N 2 selectivity and diluted CO 2 cycloaddition reaction. Following the preparation of 1-carboxymethyl-3-methoxy ethyl-imidazolium chloride ([CmMOEim]Cl) containing carboxyl and ether group, MIL-53(Al) was used for directly chemical grafting of the ionic liquid to obtain [CmMOEim]Cl@MIL-53(Al). CO 2 capture capacity of [CmMOEim]Cl@MIL-53(Al) reached up to 70 cm 3 CO 2 /g sorbent at 25 °C and 0.1 MPa, which was higher than that of two individual components. Cyclopropyl carbonate of 97 % yield was obtained at 110 °C, 3 MPa of initial 50 vol% CO 2 /N 2 pressure and 4 h with 2.4 wt% [CmMOEim]Cl@MIL-53(Al)-0.4 under solventless and co-catalyst-free condition. Various terminal cyclocarbonates were synthesized with above 90 % yield. In addition, the heterogeneous catalyst was separated from reaction system by simple centrifugation and the yield of cyclopropyl carbonate was higher than 90 % after 12 cycles owing to the chemical grafting of [CmMOEim]Cl on MIL-53(Al).

Abstract:The unique applications of porous metal-organic framework (MOF) liquids with permanent porosity and fluidity have attracted significant attention. However, fabrication of porous MOF liquids remains challenging because of the easy intermolecular self-filling of the cavity or the rapid settlement of porous hosts in hindered solvents that cannot enter their pores. Herein, we report a facile strategy for the fabrication of a MOF liquid (Im-UiO-PL) by surface ionization of an imidazolium-functionalized framework with a sterically hindered poly(ethylene glycol) sulfonate (PEGS) canopy. The Im-UiO-PL obtained in this way has a CO2 adsorption approximately 14 times larger than that of pure PEGS. Distinct from a porous MOF solid counterpart, the stored CO2 in Im-UiO-PL can be slowly released and efficiently utilized to synthesize cyclic carbonates in the atmosphere. This is the first example of the use of a porous MOF liquid as a CO2 storage material for catalysis. It offers a new method for the fabrication of unique porous liquid MOFs with functional behaviors in various fields of gas adsorption and catalysis.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have been often incorporated into metal–organic framework (MOF) to improve the performance of gas adsorption and separation. However, ILs are prone to agglomerate in the pores of MOFs, which causes insufficient exposure of their active sites, thus significantly reducing the separation efficiency. Herein, we report a zwitterionic MOF UiO-66-SO 3 − -NH 3 + with both positive and negative charges for enhanced ILs dispersion and CO 2 capture. When the ILs were introduced into UiO-66-SO 3 − -NH 3 + , they can be highly dispersed in the pores of MOF through the electronic interaction between positive and negative charges of MOF and anion and cation of ILs, and the active sites of IL can be adequately exposed. Notably, this is the first report of IL@zwitterionic MOF composites for CO 2 capture. Compared with the single group modified counterparts, namely IL@UiO-66-NH 2 and IL@UiO-66-SO 3 H, IL@UiO-66-SO 3 − -NH 3 + exhibits higher CO 2 affinity, which increases its CO 2 adsorption capacity by 36–45%. Moreover, the CO 2 /N 2 and CO 2 /CH 4 adsorption selectivities of UiO-66-SO 3 − -NH 3 + are 3.6–5.0 times and 2.1–2.5 times higher than that of single-group modified counterparts, respectively. This work not only provides a method to realize the high dispersion of ILs in MOF via constructing the zwitterionic MOF, but also reports an excellent adsorbent for CO 2 capture.

Abstract:Finding robust combination modes between ionic liquids and MOFs is still a challenge. In this work, using a simple one step-synthesis method, the ionic liquid was grafted onto MOF without any additives, and the binding mode of the two was characterized by means of XPS, FT-IR, TGA, SEM etc. It was found that the carboxyl group in the ionic liquid bonded with the amino group in MOF to form an amide bond. Thus, a novel stable composite material MIL-101-NH 2 -1-carboxypropyl-3-methylimidazolium bromine (1-C-3-M@MIL-101-NH 2 ) was synthesized. This composite employed as a catalyst for CO 2 cycloaddition demonstrated excellent catalytic activity, achieving a target product PC (Propylene carbonate) yield of 91.7 % under the conditions of 80 °C, 1.0 MPa, and a reaction time of 4 h, without the addition of any co-catalysts or solvents. The good catalytic activity was benefit from the synergistic effect of Lewis acidic Cr centers and nucleophilic Br - , as well as the high specific surface area and good CO 2 affinity of 1-C-3-M@MIL-101-NH 2 . In addition, owing to this robust bonding configuration, the catalyst can be recycled up to five times without losing activity. It is a potential catalyst for CO 2 capture and conversion.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been hybridized with other functional materials, such as ionic liquids, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and metallic nanoclusters, to fabricate composite materials. These composites possess the structural characteristics of their individual components and exhibit synergistic properties. In this work, we demonstrate the synthesis of core-shell structure UiO-66-NH 2 @PILs-x composite materials by encapsulating MOFs within ionic polymers (PILs) with varying thicknesses of PILs shell. These hybrid materials serve as bifunctional catalysts for the conversion of CO 2 into cyclic carbonates under solvent- and additive-free conditions through a synergistic catalytic effect facilitating the conversion of CO 2 into cyclic carbonates under solvent- and additive-free conditions through synergistic catalytic effect, exhibiting superior catalytic performance and excellent recyclability. This MOFs-based composite material provides a competitive approach for CO 2 catalytic conversion.

Abstract:The design and facile preparation of ionic liquids (ILs)-functionalized polymer materials is a hot research topic due to their potential wide applications. Herein, taking the reaction advantage of a cyclic anhydride with an alcoholic compound to atom-economically generate a carboxyl ester pending a carboxylic acid moiety, porous organic framework (POF) materials pending carboxylic acids and imidazolium-based ILs (CILs-POFm) were facile synthesized via the acylation reaction of hydroxyl group-functionalized ILs with a styrene maleic anhydride copolymer. The CILs-POFm material properties were facilely adjusted by changing the molar ratio of the mono-hydroxyl-functionalized ILs to the dihydroxyl-functionalized ILs. CILs-POFm materials showed abundant mesoporous structures with a porous diameter of approximately 23.83-48.16 nm, a surface area of up to 274.4 m(2) g(-1), and a superior CO2 adsorption capacity of 1.71-2.14 mmol g(-1) at 273 K and 1 atm. As a proof of concept application, the coupling reaction of epoxides with CO2 to produce cyclic carbonates was studied by using the CILs-POFm materials as catalysts under solvent-free and co-catalyst-free conditions. The findings indicated that the CILs-POF0.5 exhibited a satisfactory catalytic activity and reusability for a large scope of epoxides. Based on the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) simulations, a synergetic catalytic mechanism was proposed based on the pended carboxylic acidic groups and IL groups. This study not only provided an atom-economic strategy to prepare POFs pending both carboxylic acids and ILs, but also showed new insights into the design of functionalized POF materials with great application potential in energy storage materials, separation, and green catalysis.
Reticular Chemistry for Ionic Liquid-Functionalized Metal–Organic Frameworks with High Selectivity for CO 2

Abstract:Carbon dioxide capture and separation are of great importance for cutting greenhouse gas emissions. A series of Zr(IV)-based MOF UiO-67-MIMS(x) (0 ≤ x ≤1) derived from mixed linkers 4,4′-biphenyl-dicarboxylate linker (BPDC) and its derivative bearing imidazolium sulfonate (BPDC-MIMS) at the 2-position were designed and synthesized. Their pore sizes and structures are well tuned by varying the x ratio of the two mixed linkers. Binary ionic liquid moieties (MIMS/salt) were furnished by subsequently incorporating the sodium salts within UiO-67-MIMS(x), engendering a series of ionic liquid-decorated MOF composites, namely, UiO-67-ILs-anion (anion = Cl–, ClO4–, BF4–, PF6–). The optimal pore size, the imidazolium sulfonate group with affinity sites to CO2, and various anions of ionic liquid moieties have a synergistic effect on the CO2 adsorption and separation. UiO-67-ILs-Cl ([Zr6O4(OH)4(BPDC-MIMS)1.5(BPDC)(4.5)]-NaCl) exhibited a high uptake of CO2 of 85.20 cm3/g (273 K and 1 atm), and its infinite dilution selectivity of CO2/N2 reached 36.56. All composites were characterized through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), N2 adsorption isotherms, CO2-selective adsorption study, FT-IR spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Abstract:Efficient activation of substrates as an orthogonal pathway for facilitating CO 2 fixation into cyclic carbonates, poses ongoing challenges for the ingenious design and development of heterogeneous cooperative catalysts. Herein, a bottom-up strategy was employed to stepwise graft chloromethyl, triethylenediamine (DABCO), and chloroethylamine onto the organic linkers, forming bicationic ionic liquid tethered to MIL-101(Cr). The introduced –NH 2 and quaternary ammonium groups dangling within the micro-mesopores ensured the fast enrichment and polarization of CO 2 molecules, while the inherent unsaturated Cr 3+ sites bonded with the epoxides to promote the simultaneous activation. The ample Cl - counter-anions further nucleophilically attacked to proceed the ring opening process, triggering an upgradation in catalytic performance for cycloaddition. After optimized by the response surface methodology (RSM), a chloropropene carbonate (CPC) yield of 97.8 % with a selectivity of 99.3 % were attained over the developed Cl[TNH 2 ]Cl@MIL-101(Cr) at mild conditions (104.5 °C, 1.07 MPa, 3.75 wt% of catalyst, 1.91 h) in the absence of any solvent or co-catalyst. Furthermore, Cl[TNH 2 ]Cl@MIL-101(Cr) displayed good durability, universality, and recyclability. The synergy of multiple sites was testified by the in-situ DRIFTS spectra and DFT calculations, and thus the potential catalytic mechanism was deduced. The implement of this work could shed some lights on the rational assembling of robust IL@MOFs nanocomposites and offered novel avenues for the fabrication of high-efficiency catalysts for practical CO 2 conversion.
