Abstract:In order to utilize the visible light of TiO2 effectively, the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite was synthesized by a hydrothermal approach. Characterization of the prepared products were performed with scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The results indicated that the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite exhibited a significant red shift while the CdS quantum dots were attached on the surface of the TiO2 nanotubes. Based on a quartz crystal microbalance array, TiO2 nanotubes and heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite were used to fabricate a chemical prototype device to study the surface and interface properties of the heterostructured nanocomposite. The adsorption properties of the chemical prototype device to some typical organic volatiles were examined under the same micro-environment. The results showed that the attachment of CdS on the TiO2 nanotubes had enhanced the adsorption properties to those organic volatiles greatly. After the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite was casted on the surface of Au interdigital electrodes on flexible polyethylene terephthalate substrates, the photoresponse of the nanocomposite was examined with a low-power visible light source to explore the modification mechanism in detail. It was found that the CdS modification enhanced the photo-current of the TiO2 nanotubes to weak visible light. Not only showing enhanced visible light response, but also possessing excellent adsorption properties to organic volatiles, the heterostructured TiO2 nanotube/CdS nanocomposite, has good potential applications in photocatalysts, self-cleaning coatings, photo detectors, chemical and bio-sensors.

Abstract:Mesoporous nanocrystal clusters of anatase TiO2 with large surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity have been successfully synthesized. The synthesis involves the self-assembly of hydrophobic TiO2 nanocrystals into submicron clusters, coating of these clusters with a silica layer, thermal treatment to remove organic ligands and improve the crystallinity of the clusters, and finally removing silica to expose the mesoporous catalysts. With the help of the silica coating, the clusters not only maintain their small grain size but also keep their mesoporous structure after calcination at high temperatures (with BET surface area as high as 277 m2/g). The etching of SiO2 also results in the clusters having high dispersity in water. We have been able to identify the optimal calcination temperature to produce TiO2 nanocrystal clusters that possess both high crystallinity and large surface area, and therefore show excellent catalytic efficiency in the decomposition of organic molecules under illumination by UV light. Convenient doping with nitrogen converts these nanocrystal clusters into active photocatalysts in both visible light and natural sunlight. The strategy of forming well-defined mesoporous clusters using nanocrystals promises a versatile and useful method for designing photocatalysts with enhanced activity and stability.
In Situ Growth of Cd0.5Zn0.5S Nanorods on Ti3C2 MXene Nanosheet for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Against the backdrop of energy scarcities and ecological concerns, the process of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution emerges as a critical method for transforming solar energy into chemical energy. Central to this technology is the crafting of photocatalysts that are not only efficient and durable but also economically viable. The key to creating photocatalysts that boast superior hydrogen production capabilities lies in enhancing the separation and transfer of photo-generated electrons and holes. This study introduces a binary heterojunction photocatalyst, featuring a combination of Cd0.5Zn0.5S and Ti3C2 MXene, synthesized via an in situ hydrothermal method. In the composite, slender Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanorods are uniformly coated over the surface of single layer Ti3C2 nanosheets, forming a Schottky heterojunction at the material interface. This structure enhances the separation efficiency of photo-generated electrons and holes, thereby improving the utilization of light. With 0.5 wt% (mass fraction) of Ti3C2 MXene incorporated, we observed a peak photocatalytic H2 generation rate of 15.56 mmol∙g−1∙h−1, outperforming the baseline Cd0.5Zn0.5S by 2.56 times. Notably, the photocatalytic efficiency remained largely unchanged after five cycles. This composite achieved the highest apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 18.4% when exposed to 350 nm UV light. Various characterization techniques, including in situ X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy, along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, have further substantiated that the formation of a Schottky heterojunction at the interface is crucial for enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance of the composite material. This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the novel carbon based material MXene as a co-catalyst for improving the performance of photocatalysts and offers a viable approach for the construction of MXene-containing photocatalytic hydrogen evolution catalysts.

Abstract:ZnCdS/TiO2/Na-MXene composites were prepared by a hydrothermal process to obtain an excellent photocatalyst with photo-corrosion resistant property. Under hydrothermal conditions, the surface of Ti3C2 MXene was wrapped by Na+ and ZnCdS nanoparticles, which slowed down the further oxidation of Ti3C2 MXene into TiO2 and improved the utilization rate of MXene. The adsorption capacity of an optimal ZnCdS/TiO2/Na-MXene composite to methylene blue reached 299.68 mg/g, confirming a higher MXene content was important for photocatalytic degradation of an organic dye. The basal distance of the MXene layers increased from 10.59 Å to 15.21 Å due to the intercalation of ZnCdS, which could facilitate the transportation and adsorption of organic pollutant in ZnCdS/TiO2/Na-MXene. The total removal efficiency was 9.3 times that of ZnCdS in 120 min. When the composites were used for photocatalytic hydrogen production, a relatively higher ZnCdS content was necessary. The hydrogen conversion efficiency of an optimal ZnCdS/TiO2/Na-MXene composite under visible light irradiation reached 8436.58 μmol·g−1·h−1, which was 3.3 times that of ZnCdS. The ZnCdS/TiO2/Na-MXene composites showed excellent and stable photocatalytic activity in recycling experiments, confirming their excellent photo-corrosion property. These ZnCdS/TiO2/Na-MXene composites showed great potential in the application of photocatalytic degradation and hydrogen production, and provided a new way to reduce the oxidation process of Ti3C2 MXene.

Abstract:Fabrication TiO 2 with conductive two-dimensional materials is an effective strategy to improve its photocatalytic activity. Herein, a well-defined carbon-doped TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 heterojunction is constructed via in situ controllable oxidation of Ti 3 C 2 MXene in carbon dioxide. The formed C-doped TiO 2 nanoparticles as the photocatalyst uniformly disperse on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and generate electrons and holes under irradiation. The two-dimensional Ti 3 C 2 MXene, owing to its excellent conductivity, acts as the electron transport channels and accelerates the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Meanwhile, due to its large specific surface area and good solubility, Ti 3 C 2 MXene may facilitate to enhance the adsorption of pollutant on the photocatalyst as well as the absorption of photocatalyst for visible light. Therefore, the unique merits of TiO 2 and Ti 3 C 2 MXene are integrated to deliver the composites high photocatalytic activity. The proper content of Ti 3 C 2 MXene and TiO 2 in the composite is crucial for enhancing the photocatalytic performance, which can be effectively tuned by varying the oxidation temperature. In this work, C-doped TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 oxidized at 400 °C presents the optimum photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:A series of visible-light-driven mesoporous structured MnO2/TiO2 nanocrystal photocatalysts have been synthesized through a modified sol-gel method, and the N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherm confirms that the mesoporous materials possess large pore size (up to 9.2 nm) and a narrow pore size distribution. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analyses and complementary x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements reveal that the doping of the transition metal Mn inhibits the growth of TiO2 anatase nanocrystals and the Mn species are highly dispersed on the surface of TiO2. The ultraviolet (UV)-vis spectrum demonstrates the excellent adsorption properties of MnO2/TiO2 over the whole region of visible light, which enables this novel photocatalysis material to possess remarkable activity in the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under visible light radiation. Moreover, a `coating mechanism' based on the nucleation of titania nanocrystals along with the interaction between the dopant precursors and titania clusters has been suggested.

Abstract:In this work, TiO2/MXene composites were successfully synthesized through an in-situ solvothermal method, where the morphology of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) was modified by different concentrations of agents. Ti3C2Tx with electronic storage characteristics was employed as a co-catalyst to enhance the photocatalytic degradation activity by capturing photogenerated electrons. The experimental results reveal that, with the help of C3H8O agents, TiO2 NPs are uniformly distributed on the surface of Ti3C2Tx. The TiO2/Ti3C2Tx-C3H8O composite showed the highest photocatalytic activity of 90.5% after 75 min under mercury light irradiation, which is 57.9% higher than that of the pure TiO2 photocatalyst. The photocatalytic activity is promoted due to the high photoelectron transmission performance of the TiO2/Ti3C2Tx composites.

Abstract:A kind of 2D-layered material, Ti3C2 MXenes, was successfully used as a new and efficient co-catalyst to improve the photocatalytic NH3 synthesis performance of P25, due to its large surface area/2D-layered structure, large electric capacity, excellent electrical conductivity and effective chemisorption/activation of N-2 molecules. The generation yield of NH3 was improved by five times on the optimized sample of 6% Ti3C2 MXenes-P25 compared with pure P25 under full spectrum light irradiation, consistent with the measured both photocurrent densities and charge lifetime. The further mechanistic study showed that Ti3C2 MXenes played an important role in the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs by accumulating the excited electrons from the excited P25. Most importantly, Ti3C2 MXenes could dramatically improve chemisorption and activation of N-2 as demonstrated by ESR spectra and DFT calculations. In addition, Ti3C2 MXenes loading on P25 could introduce oxygen vacancies in P25, also beneficial for photocatalytic NH3 synthesis. Abstract:Photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes is an efficient, safe and environmentally-friendly technique for improving environmental purification. Exploring high-quality and low-cost photocatalysts for photocatalytic degradation with enhanced light harvesting capability and efficient charge separation and transport remains a challenge. Herein, we utilize the two-dimensional (2D) MXene, Ti3C2Tx nanosheets as a high efficiency co-catalyst to construct the Cs2AgBiBr6/Ti3C2Tx Schottky heterostructure by in-situ growth of Cs2AgBiBr6 perovskite NCs on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets via thermal injection method. The optimized Cs2AgBiBr6/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites show a substantially enhanced organic dye degradation rate, which is ∼4.7 times higher than that of the pristine Cs2AgBiBr6 NCs. Such outstanding photocatalytic activity of Cs2AgBiBr6/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites stems from the strong interaction between Cs2AgBiBr6 NCs and highly conductive 2D Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, a large interface contact area, and the favorable Fermi level alignment, which significantly promote the charge transfer and separation efficiency while suppressing the electron-hole recombination. More importantly, the Cs2AgBiBr6/MXenes–based photocatalysts exhibit good repeatability and long-term stability. It is demonstrated that this work will guide the construction of high-efficiency and stable photocatalytic materials for environmental purification.

Abstract:A novel mesoporous-structured photocatalyst MoO3/TiO2 was synthesized through a modified sol-gel method by using P123 as the template, and the resulting nano-photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption measurements, transmission electron microscope (TEM), UV-vis spectroscopy, XPS and Raman techniques. Low-angle XRD and TEM images show the lack of long-range order in the as-prepared MoO3/TiO2, but the Mo species are homogenously dispersed on the anatase matrix. According to the results of N2 ads-desorption, the calcined products possess the high surface area and the pore size distribution centered between 4-7 nm. The calcined meso-MoO3/TiO2 materials exhibit the high photocatalytic activity for the degradation of MB (methylene blue) under visible light radiation.
Realizing improved defect-mediated charge separation by assembling C–TiO2-X nanodots into nanostructured microspheres

Abstract:Nanostructured C–TiO2-X microspheres were prepared by facile modified solvothermal method and employed as an efficient visible light photocatalyst for photocatalytic antibiotic elimination. The acetone as well as distilled water not only induces the high crystallization of nanostructured C–TiO2-X microspheres, the formation of C–TiO2-X nanodots, and oxygen vacancies, but also boosts the assembling of C–TiO2-X nanodots into nanostructured microspheres. The photocatalytic performance of nanostructured C–TiO2-X microspheres was evaluated by photocatalytic antibiotic degradation under visible light and Xe lamp irradiation. The prepared C–TiO2-X microspheres showed highly improved visible light absorption, charge separation, and visible light photocatalytic activity. The visible light photocatalytic activity of nanostructured C–TiO2-x-180 microspheres was approximately 3.14 times of commercial TiO2, which could be attributed to the construction of unique nanostructures, oxygen vacancies, and carbon doping for efficient solar light harvesting and utilization, the diffusion of degraded products, and charge separation. Besides, the detailed energy band structures, active species for the visible light photocatalytic tetracycline degradation, and visible light photocatalytic mechanism of nanostructured C–TiO2-X microspheres were also proposed in the work.

Abstract:Highly crystallized mesoporous TiO2 thin films with enhanced photocatalytic activity were synthesized via a substrate-assisted strategy. Three types of substrates, namely, amorphous glass, polycrystalline Pt, and single-crystal Si(111) wafer, were employed to study their effects on the structure of TiO2 films, by using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), a Raman spectrometer, and a UV-vis spectrophotometer. When the substrate was changed from amorphous glass to polycrystalline Pt and then to single-crystal Si(111), a transition in the pore configuration took place from a cubical configuration to cagelike arrays, accompanied by an increase in nanocrystallinity. The observed transitions in pore configuration of mesoporous TiO2 can be accounted for by the differences in nucleation behaviors and surface energy among the substrate systems involved. Mesoporous TiO2 thin films of enhanced nanocrystallinity demonstrate improved photocatalytic activity for degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV irradiation. They also show photoluminescence at room temperature, which is related to the radiative recombination of excitons.
Surface -O terminated urchin-like TiO2/Ti3C2O (MXene) as high performance photocatalyst: Interfacial engineering and mechanism insight

Abstract:The surface groups of MXene act as a decisive role on the performance of MXene-based photocatalysts. In this work, TiO2 nano-whiskers were grown in-situ on Ti3C2 Tx , through a hydrothermal and post-heat treatment process, meanwhile, the surface groups of Ti3C2 Tx were unified -O adsorption. The as-prepared urchin-like TiO2/Ti3C2 Ox composite have efficient activity for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and degradation of levofloxacin (LEV). The optimized hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance reached 346.8 μmol g-1 h−1, and the apparent quantum yield at 313 nm was 7.67%. Its hydrogen production performance and degradation rate of LEV were 9.7 and 7.7 folds higher than those of pure TiO2, respectively. The -O terminated Ti3C2 Ox achieving a work function about 0.3 eV larger than TiO2, as both DFT calculation and UPS measurement depicted. Therefore, the photogenerated e-/h+ were separated at the TiO2/Ti3C2 Ox interface via Schottky junction, a large amount of e- was enriched on Ti3C2 Ox , which enabled the photocatalyst with remarkable charge separation and photocatalytic performance. Meanwhile, the reaction pathways of TiO2/Ti3C2 Ox photocatalytic HER and LEV degradation/mineralization were carefully investigated. This study underlines the significance of surface groups on photocatalysts composed of MXenes, and sheds light on the new approach to the rational design of high-efficiency MXene-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing efficient heterojunction photocatalysts that have a high charge carrier separation rate and improved light-harvesting capacity is a crucial step in solving energy crisis and reducing environmental pollution. Herein, we synthesized few-layered Ti3C2 MXene sheets (MXs) by a manual shaking process, and combined with CdIn2S4 (CIS) to construct novel Ti3C2 MXene/CdIn2S4 (MXCIS) Schottky heterojunction through a solvothermal method. The strong interface between two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2 MXene and 2D CIS nanoplates led to enhanced light-harvesting capacity and promoted charge separation rate. Additionally, the presence of S vacancies on the MXCIS surface helped to trap free electrons. The optimal sample, 5-MXCIS (with 5 wt% MXs loading), exhibited outstanding performance for photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) evolution and Cr(VI) reduction under visible light due to the synergistic effect of enhanced light-harvesting capacity and charge separation rate. The charge transfer kinetics was thoroughly studied using multiple techniques. The reactive species of •O2-, •OH and h+ were generated in 5-MXCIS system, and e- and •O2- radicals were found to be the main contributors to Cr(VI) photoreduction. Based on the characterization results, a possible photocatalytic mechanism for H2 evolution and Cr(VI) reduction was proposed. On the whole, this work provides new insights into the design of 2D/2D MXene-based Schottky heterojunction photocatalysts for boosting photocatalytic efficiency.

Abstract:Mesoporous g-C3N4 nanosheets (MCN) with uniform pore size were utilized to decorate mesoporous TiO2 spheres (TSs) to form a core-shell heterojunction photocatalyst containing uniform mesopores. Moreover, the mesoporous g-C3N4 nanosheets served as shells for composites, in addition to playing a pivotal function for the regulation of the pore structure of the composite. The mesoporous TiO2@g-C3N4 core/shell structure having a uniform pore size exhibited high surface area of ∼134 m2/g. This coupled material with improved porosity, not only led to increased visible-light absorption but also led to the enhanced charge generation/separation. In addition, it showed a lengthy cycling stability with highly active visible-light efficiency to degrade Rhodamine B (RhB) dye.
Branched Mesoporous TiO2 Mesocrystals by Epitaxial Assembly of Micelles for Photocatalysis

Abstract:The understanding and control of the structural complexity of mesoporous semiconductors with single-crystal-like nature are both attractive and challenging. Here, we report a crystallization-driven epitaxial assembly from monomicelles to construct branched mesoporous TiO2 mesocrystals (m-TiO2 MCs) with coherent atomic domains. The star-shaped multipods are obtained by two-step evaporation with nanocrystal mediation, primarily consisting of arms along < 001 >, < 101 >, and < 111 > crystal directions. For each arm, ordered open mesochannels arrange in parallel along the growth direction. The m-TiO2 MC multipods have a surface area of ∼116 m2/g and single-crystal-like frameworks and are good hydrogen evolution photocatalysts. Under full-spectrum irradiation, the branched m-TiO2 MCs exhibit a hydrogen evolution rate of 8 mmol h−1 g−1, which is more than four times higher than that of commercial TiO2 P25. This crystallization-driven self-assembly approach may provide valuable insight into designing programmable mesoporous mesocrystals by controlling the oriented assembly of monomicelle building blocks.
Noble Metal‐Free Heterojunction of Ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 MXene/WO 3 for Boosted Visible‐Light‐Driven Photoreactivity

Abstract:Developing highly efficient, robust, and noble metal‐free photocatalytic systems is essential for the large‐scale implementation of solar‐to‐chemical energy conversion. Herein, a novel sandwich‐like hierarchical heterostructure of Ti3C2 MXene/WO3 is created by in situ growth of ultrathin WO3 nanosheets onto the surface of few‐layer Ti3C2 nanosheets via a one‐pot solvothermal synthesis strategy. The resultant Ti3C2/WO3 heterostructure holds a large interface contact area, an intimate electronic interaction, and a short carrier migration distance, which is beneficial for bulk‐to‐surface and interfacial charge transfer. Meanwhile, the excellent electrical conductivity of Ti3C2 and the Schottky junction at the interface of WO3 and Ti3C2 expedites the spatial charge separation and transportation. As expected, the as‐prepared Ti3C2/WO3 nanohybrids exhibit a superior visible‐light‐driven photoactivity and stability toward tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) decomposition. Across a range of Ti3C2 concentrations, 3 wt% Ti3C2/WO3 achieves the greatest photodegradation rate of 16.08 × 10−3 min−1 that is approximately ninefold larger than that of pristine WO3. In addition to the underlying photocatalytic mechanism, three TC degradation pathways are identified, highlighting the important roles of ·O2− and h+. This study shows the potential of earth‐abundant MXene family materials in the fabrication of high‐performance and low‐cost photocatalysts applicable for environment purification. A novel sandwich‐like hierarchical heterostructure of Ti3C2 MXene/WO3 is created for visible‐light‐driven tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) degradation. The enhanced photocatalytic ability is ascribed to the excellent electrical conductivity of Ti3C2 and the Schottky junction at the interface of WO3 and Ti3C2, which expedite the spatial separation and transportation of photoinduced electron–hole pairs.

Abstract:Increasing visible light absorption and constructing an active surface for TiO2 have long been pursued to obtain high photocatalytic activities. Modifying TiO2 at an atomic scale is desirable to optimize its surface state and band structure but remains a huge challenge. Herein, we developed an ultrasmall (∼5 nm) visible-light-responsive TiO2 photocatalyst with a novel hybrid structure (TiO2/C) through a chemical vapor deposition process on large scale. Environmental in-situ transmission electron microscope studies confirmed the anatase TiO2 with a monolayer carbon shell in a hybrid structure. The resulted structure possesses narrowed bandgap 2.83 eV, favoring the enhanced visible-light-responsive photocatalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations confirm the tunable mechanism of carbon-induced localized energy band within the bandgap of TiO2. As a physical barrier without turning TiO2 black, the monolayer carbon shell stabilizes Ti3+ inside TiO2, facilitates the separation of photo-induced carriers and enriches abundant absorbing sites of target pollutants. Consequently, the TiO2/C exhibits outstanding photocatalytic performance in both photoelectrochemical water oxidation and dye degradation under visible light besides superior activity for hydrogen evolution under simulated sunlight irradiation. This design proved a meaningful strategy in obtaining visible-light-responsive photocatalysts with a stable active surface for industrial application.

Abstract:Accordion-like Ti3C2Tx MXene supplied a possibility to construct two-dimensional composites with novel performance. In this paper, few-layered Ti3C2Tx MXene was created via a chemical etching strategy. The oxidation in-situ using a powerful alkaline solution resulted successfully in TiO2 nanocrystals grown on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets. The alkaline treatment adjusted terminations of the Ti3C2Tx MXene and controlled the oxidation degree by changing temperature. The ratio of Ti3C2Tx and TiO2 was finally optimized. Because of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets with well conductivity and excellent light absorption as well as TiO2 nanocrystal arrays on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets with a high specific surface area and more active sites, TiO2/Ti3C2Tx composites revealed excellent photocatalystic activity, especially for NO removal. The improvement of separation and transfer efficiency of phootogenerated carriers is ascribed to the microstructure of TiO2/Ti3C2Tx composites. The composite sample synthesized at 75 °C revealed the best NO removal efficiency, in which 70% of NO was removed at a concentration of 600 ppb. This study offers a new thought for preparing high performance MXene-based photocatalysts.
