Abstract:Considering the kinetic and fluid dynamic processes in the gain medium, a theoretical model is established to describe the mechanism of thermal-lensing effect in an exciplex pumped Cs vapor laser. The three-dimensional distribution of temperature and index of refraction in the gain medium are depicted. The effective focal length and radius of thermal lens are predicted. Our simulation results show the thermal lens plays a non-negligible role in high-power XPCsLs and can be significantly aggravated in higher wall temperature, buffer pressure and pump intensity. The divergence of laser beam influenced by thermal lens is also made in detail. This model is helpful for in-depth understanding of the thermal-lensing effect in XPALs.

Abstract:The external cavity feedback of a broad-area laser diode is investigated. In Fourier optic methods, the inserted prism in an external cavity can be interpreted as a spatial filter in the Fourier plane of the laser diode. The transverse mode can be selected by changing the position of the filter. As the result of a self-consistency theoretical analysis, the output beam of the external cavity has a single-lobed far-field profile. It agrees well with the experiment result. The beam times-diffraction-limit-factor M2 is measured to be 1.16.

Abstract:Influences on the semiconductor laser properties of external optical feedback, i.e., return of a portion of the laser output from a reflector external to the laser cavity, have been examined. Experimental observations with a single mode laser is presented with analysis based on a compound cavity laser model, which has been found to explain essential features of the experimental results. In particular, it has been demonstrated that a laser with external feedback can be multistable and show hysteresis phenomena, analogous to those of non-linear Fabry-Perot resonator. It has also been shown that the dynamic properties of injection lasers are significantly affected by external feedback, depending on interference conditions between returned light and the field inside the laser diode.

Abstract:We present a systematic study of external optical feedback effects on the output characteristics of the two orthogonally polarized modes in a frequency locking dual frequency laser. Accompanied by the change of the external cavity length, the length of the resonance cavity is changed very slowly to set the oscillating modes sweeping across the laser gain curve. Comprehensive results are obtained and a strong mode competition is observed. Particularly, when the laser runs in the middle region of the gain curve, which mode can oscillate is determined by the movement direction of the external feedback mirror. Based on the phenomenon, a displacement sensor with directional discrimination is proposed and its capability is also discussed.

Abstract:Effect of external optical feedback on strongly coupled external cavity semiconductor laser is theoretically analyzed for both coherent and incoherent external optical feedback. The results show that the critical tolerable level of external optical feedback can be greatly increased by about 20dB for strongly coupled external cavity semiconductor laser compared to solitary laser diode. It is also obtained that long external cavity length and strong external cavity coupling are beneficial to resist feedback for external cavity semiconductor lasers.

Abstract:In order to study the optical feedback characteristics of the dual frequency laser,a birefringent external cavity was studied throughboth theoretical analysis and experiments.In the experiments,the phenomenon of the fringe frequency doubled was observed.It was found that the resolution of the optical feedback system was doubled and the sensitivity of the optical feedback system was also improved after the modes competition between both the polarized light beams.The work is useful for improving the resolution of the optical feedback systems.

Abstract:Through the introduction of effective reflectivity, the influence of external optical feedback on the oscillating characteristics of a semiconductor laser is discussed, such as the threshold gain, laser frequency and output power, according to the self-consistency condition and the photon and carrier density ratio equation. In the experiment, the threshold current of a laser diode decreased from 420mA to 370mA with external cavity feedback and the slope efficiency increased. The output power obtained by theoretical simulation agrees well with the experiment results.

Abstract:The optical feedback characteristics in a Zeeman-birefringence dual-frequency laser are studied during the laser cavity tuning in three different kinds of optical feedback conditions: (i) only //-light is fed back; (ii) only ⊥-light is fed back; (iii) both lights are fed back. A compact displacement sensor is designed using the experimental result that there is a nearly 90 degrees phase delay between the two lights' cosine optical feedback signals when both lights are fed back into the laser cavity. The priority order that the two lights' intensity curves appear can be used for direction discrimination. The resolution of the displacement sensor is at least 79 nm and the sensor can discriminate the target's moving direction easily.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive analysis of factors influencing the morphology of the Doppler spectrum obtained from a laser-feedback interferometer. We explore the effect of optical system parameters on three spectral characteristics: central Doppler frequency, broadening, and signal-to-noise ratio. We perform four sets of experiments and replicate the results using a Monte Carlo simulation calibrated to the backscattering profile of the target. We classify the optical system parameters as having a strong or weak influence on the Doppler spectrum. The calibrated Monte Carlo approach accurately reproduces experimental results, and allows one to investigate the detailed contribution of system parameters to the Doppler spectrum, which are difficult to isolate in experiment.

Abstract:Through the analysis of the loss and threshold characteristics of a laser diode (LD), the threshold current density of LD with external feedback is calculated, according to the theory of multi-beam interference and the definition of equivalent reflection factor. When the length of external cavity approximates to the wavelength of LD, the obtained equation can be used to analyze the influence of the external cavity to the threshold current accurately. When the length of external cavity is much longer than the wavelength of LD, it is out of work. Because in the experiment the external cavity is much longer than the wavelength, the theory model is simplified by analysis to the injected power. The threshold drive current will be reduced obviously for the external feedback. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental findings.

Abstract:External-cavity diode lasers (ECDL) are widely used as light sources in laser spectroscopy, atomic physics, and quantum optics. This study demonstrated a home-made 852-nm ECDL with variable feedback, using the combined dual narrow-band interference filters (IFs) as the laser longitudinal mode selection element. The combination of narrow-band IFs, mainly for the current commercially available narrow-band IFs with the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of approximately 0.5 nm for 780-895 nm. We designed different narrow-band IFs combinations to achieve a narrower FWHM, and applied them in the ECDL. The combination of the dual narrow-band IFs further reduces the laser linewidth. We measured the laser linewidth using a high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity with a linewidth of approximately 10 kHz. The laser linewidth is approximately 176 kHz for the Single-IF-ECDL and 96 kHz for the Dual-IF-ECDL with the same feedback. In addition, we have experimentally verified the results of narrower laser linewidth and larger tuning range with increase in the feedback. The developed Dual-IF-ECDL has the capability of narrow linewidth and wavelength tunability and can be applied to precision spectroscopy, cooling and trapping of neutral atoms.

Abstract:A new method to study the dynamic characteristics in semiconductor lasers with external optical feedback is presented.The semiconductor lasers with external optical feedback which is weak to moderate feedback is analyzed based on the visual simulation software.The results of the simulation show that for a small amount of optical feedback,the system is periodic;with the increasing of the optical feedback,the output of the system goes into chaos from its periodic state.And the chaos control via high frequency modulation is studied.Compared with the simulation technology which is based on the high-level language,using this simulation software can avoid complicated programming and can modify the parameter of the system easily.

Abstract:The principle of laser optical feedback microscope was presented and demonstrated. Three methods to advance the vertical resolution of laser optical feedback microscope were experimentally studied. The first one is to detect the two polarized lights’ intensities separately with a Wollaston prism instead of to detect the whole light’s intensity. The second is that both of the two orthogonally polarized lights of a birefringent dual frequency laser are fed back. The third one is that only one of the orthogonally polarized lights is fed back. The experimental results show that the modes competition between orthogonally polarized lights can be used to improve the vertical resolution of laser optical feedback microscope effectively.
Laser Multiple Optical Feedback with Misalignment Cavity and Its Sensing Application

Abstract:The intensity and frequency properties of laser multiple optical feedback have been investigated. The multiple optical feedback is realized with a high reflectivity feedback mirror in the misalignment external cavity. Experimental results show that the laser intensity is modulated by the variation of feedback cavity length, when the feedback mirror is drove by PZT. In most cases, the modulation depth of the multiple feedback fringes is obviously different. And its frequency analysis results seem like the noise signals. Particularly, at certain misalignment angle of feedback mirror, the envelope of feedback fringes is cosine-like and the modulation depth of the multiple feedback fringes is almost equal. The spectral analysis shows that the fringes density of multiple feedback is increased evidently than that of conventional weak feedback. The resolution of this fringe is upto nanometer level which can be calculated by the spectral analysis result. This high resolution cosine-like fringe of multiple feedback is very useful for high precision sensing applications.

Abstract:We can get optical feedback signals of the two orthogonally polarized light beams in a HeNe laser during the cavity tuning process when the period of the driving signal of the feedback mirror is set much shorter than that of the cavity mirror. The experiments are done under three different optical feedback conditions: only perpendicular light is fed back, only parallel light is fed back and both lights are fed back. When both lights are fed back, there is a phase delay less then 180 degrees between the two lights' intensity curves. When only one polarized light is fed back into the laser cavity, the two lights' intensity curves are inverted with respect to each other. We can subtract one light's intensity curve from the other one to improve the sensitivity of the optical feedback system. Especially when only perpendicular light is fed back, both lights' modulation amplitudes are large in a wide range of gain curve with the DC component stable. This property can be used to reduce the miscount of the system.

Abstract:We present the effects of optical feedback from an anisotropic external cavity on the characteristics of the output intensities in a single mode Nd:YAG laser. Due to the birefringence effect, the external cavity modulates laser intensities in the two orthogonal directions with a phase difference, which is twice as large as that of the birefringence element in the external cavity. Experimental results are presented, as well as a theoretical analysis. The potential applications of this phenomenon are also discussed.

Abstract:Time-delayed optical feedback is known to trigger a wide variety of complex dynamical behavior in semiconductor lasers. Adding a second optical feedback loop is naturally expected to further increase the complexity of the system and its dynamics, but due to interference between the two feedback arms, it was also quickly identified as a way to improve the laser stability. While these two aspects have already been investigated, the influence of the feedback phases, i.e., sub-wavelength changes in the mirror positions, on the laser behavior still remains to be thoroughly studied, despite indications that this parameter could have a significant impact. Here, we analyze the effect of the feedback phase on the laser stability in a dual-feedback configuration. We show an increased sensitivity of the laser system to feedback phase changes when two-feedback loops are present and clarify the interplay between the frequency shift induced by the feedback and the interferometric effect between the two feedback arms.

Abstract:The optical feedback characteristics in a Zeeman-birefringence HeNe laser have been studied systematically when the external cavity varies in a large range. The intensity variations of the two orthogonally polarized lights are observed during the laser cavity tuning in the dual frequency laser. When the external cavity length is an integral multiple of the laser cavity length, either polarized light's intensity modulation depth varies not obviously when the laser works in dual modes conditions or single mode condition. But when the external cavity length is far away from an integral multiple of the laser cavity length and the laser works in different dual modes conditions, polarized light's intensity modulation depth varies obviously. This characteristic can guide us to tune the laser to work in single mode condition to improve the sensitivity of the optical system when the system is used for a large displacement measurement. It can also be used for measuring the position of the target mirror. The theoretical analysis is in good agreement with experimental results.
