Abstract:Based on experimental evidences supporting the hypothesis that neutrinos might be tachyonic fermions, a new Dirac-type equation is proposed and a spin-1/2 tachyonic quantum theory is developed. The new Dirac-type equation provides a solution for the puzzle of negative mass-square of neutrinos. This equation can be written in two spinor equations coupled together via nonzero mass while respecting the maximum parity violation, and it reduces to one Weyl equation in the massless limit. Some peculiar features of tachyonic neutrino are discussed in this theoretical framework.

A New Scheme for Neutrino Mass Generation and Relevant New Physics

Abstract:We propose a new method for neutrino mass generation through a modified Higgs mechanism by introducing an additional tiny vacuum breaking to the charged Higgs field. With identical particle spectrum as standard electroweak model, this modified Higgs mechanism endows the lepton-Higgs Yukawa coupling Lagrangian with a modified lepton mass matrix. Inserting the latest data of particle experiments into this modified lepton mass matrix enable us to locate the value of the newly introduced parameter parametrizing the extra perturbative Higgs vacuum breaking and produce masses for neutrinos of three generations. We reach a sum of three-generation neutrino massess at: $\Sigma_{(\nu)} ~ m_{\nu} \approx 0.104078 ~eV$. This prediction is supported by the result of the latest cosmological observation, i.e. the 95\% C.L. upper bound $\Sigma_{(\nu)} ~ m_{\nu} < 0.176 ~eV$ determined by the Planck data. In our proposal of the modified Higgs mechanism, the Higgs vacua break twice, such that, the very minuteness of the extra Higgs vacuum breaking explains the origin of the very minuteness of neutrino masses, while the relative greatness of the standard Higgs vacuum breaking is recognized as the origin of the relative greatness of charged lepton masses. This proposal can bring rich new physics to Higgs-relevant problems in particle physics, besides the massive neutrino problems.

Abstract:We explore generalized global symmetries in theories of physics beyond the standard model. Theories of Z′ bosons generically contain "noninvertible" chiral symmetries, whose presence indicates a natural paradigm to break this symmetry by an exponentially small amount in an ultraviolet completion. For example, in models of gauged lepton family difference such as the phenomenologically well motivated U(1)Lμ−Lτ , there is a noninvertible lepton number symmetry which protects neutrino masses. We embed these theories in gauged non-Abelian horizontal lepton symmetries, e.g., U(1)Lμ−Lτ⊂SU(3)H , where the generalized symmetries are broken nonperturbatively by the existence of lepton family magnetic monopoles. In such theories, either Majorana or Dirac neutrino masses may be generated through quantum gauge theory effects from the charged lepton Yukawas, e.g., yν∼yτexp(−Sinst) . The neutrino mass: A triangular formulation

Abstract:We demonstrate that the flavor oscillation when a neutrino travels through spacetime, is equivalent to permanent changes on the vacuum state condition perceived by the same particle. This can be visualized via the Quantum Yang Baxter equations (QYBE). From this perspective, the neutrino never breaks the symmetry of the ground state because it never selects an specific vacuum condition. Then naturally the Higgs mechanism cannot be the generator of the neutrino masses. The constraints emerging from this model predict a normal mass hierarchy and some specific values for the mass eigenvalues once we fix the mixing angles. Interestingly, the model suggests that the sum of the mix angles is equal to $\pi/2$.

Abstract:We present a mathematical framework for constructing the most general neutrino mass matrices that yield the observed spectrum of light active neutrino masses in conjunction with arbitrarily many heavy sterile neutrinos, without the need to assume a hierarchy between Dirac and Majorana mass terms. The seesaw mechanism is a byproduct of the formalism, along with many other possibilities for generating tiny neutrino masses. Abstract:We revisit our earlier proposal for the form of the neutrino mass matrix: a two-zero ansatz wherein the CP-violating PMNS phase $\delta$ plays a surprisingly important role. We review its observable consequences and show how our ansatz follows from a softly-broken symmetry (muon number minus tau lepton number) in a see-saw model with three Higgs doublets.

Generalized One-Loop Neutrino Mass Model with Charged Particles

Abstract:We propose a radiative neutrino-mass model by introducing 3 generations of fermion pairs $E^{-(N+1)/2} E^{+(N+1)/2}$ and a couple of multi-charged bosonic doublet fields $\Phi_{N/2}, \Phi_{N/2+1}$, where $N=1,3,5,7,9$. We show that the models can satisfy the neutrino masses and oscillation data, and are consistent with lepton-flavor violations, the muon anomalous magnetic moment, the oblique parameters, and the beta function of the $U(1)_Y$ hypercharge gauge coupling. We also discuss the collider signals for various $N$, namely, multi-charged leptons in the final state from the Drell-Yan production of $E^{-(N+1)/2} E^{+(N+1)/2}$. In general, the larger the $N$ the more charged leptons will appear in the final state.

Abstract:We performed a Lorentz covariant quantization of the spin-1/2 fermion field assuming the space-like energy-momentum dispersion relation. We a\-chieved the task in the following steps: ($i$) determining the unitary realizations of the inhomogenous Lorentz group in the preferred frame scenario by means of the Wigner-Mackey induction procedure and constructing the Fock space; ($ii$) formulating the theory in a manifestly covariant way by constructing the field amplitudes according to the Weinberg method; ($iii$) obtaining the final constraints on the amplitudes by postulating a Dirac-like free field equation. Our theory allows to predict all chiral properties of the neutrinos, preserving the Standard Model dynamics. We discussed the form of the fundamental observables, energy and helicity, and show that non-observation of the $+\tfrac{1}{2}$ helicity state of the neutrino and the $-\tfrac{1}{2}$ helicity state of the antineutrino could be a direct consequence of the "tachyoneity" of neutrinos at the free level. We found that the free field theory of the space-like neutrino is not invariant under the C and P transformations separately but is CP-invariant. We calculated and analyzed the electron energy spectrum in tritium decay within the framework of our theory and found an excellent agreement with the recent measurement of KATRIN. In our formalism the questions of negative/imaginary energies and the causality problem does not appear.

Abstract:The oscillations of ultra-relativistic neutrinos are realized by the propagation of assumed zero-mass on-shell neutrinos with the speed of light in vacuum combined with the phase modulation by the small mass term with a time parameter . This picture is realized in the first quantization by the mass expansion and in field theory by the use of with the neutrino mass eigenstates and a finite positive after the contour integral of the propagating neutrino energies. By noting that the conventional detectors are insensitive to neutrino masses, the measured energy-momenta of the initial and final states with assumed zero-mass neutrinos are conserved. The propagating neutrinos preserve the three-momentum in this sense but the energies of the massive neutrinos are conserved up to uncertainty relations and thus leading to oscillations. Conceptual complications in the case of Majorana neutrinos due to the charge conjugation in are also discussed.

Abstract:We discuss a simple theory for neutrino masses where the total lepton number is a local gauge symmetry spontaneously broken below the multi-TeV scale. In this context, the neutrino masses are generated through the canonical seesaw mechanism and a Majorana dark matter candidate is predicted from anomaly cancellation. We discuss in great detail the dark matter annihilation channels and find out the upper bound on the symmetry breaking scale using the cosmological bounds on the relic density. Since in this context the dark matter candidate has suppressed couplings to the Standard Model quarks, one can satisfy the direct detection bounds even if the dark matter mass is close to the electroweak scale. This theory predicts a light pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (the Majoron) associated to the mechanism of neutrino mass. We discuss briefly the properties of the Majoron and the impact of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis bounds.

Abstract:A new theoretical framework, based on the quantum field theory of open systems applied to neutrinos, has been developed. This framework aims to describe the neutrino evolution in external environment, taking into account the effect of neutrino quantum decoherence. We have applied this approach to investigate a novel mechanism for neutrino quantum decoherence, which arises due to the neutrino decay into a lighter neutrino state and a massless particle, as well as the inverse process of absorption of a massless particle by a neutrino. We derived the new generalized Lindblad master equation for the neutrino evolution that accounts for neutrino transitions between states with different momenta. We also demonstrate that studying of neutrino quantum decoherence through this master equation provides a unique possibility to determine or limit the neutrino decay width. On this basis we obtained the constraint on neutrino lifetime $\frac{\tau_2}{m_2} > 1.83 \times 10^{-10} \frac{s}{eV}$ (for the case of the Dirac neutrino scalar decay and neutrino degenerate hierarchy).

Abstract:In this review, the seesaw mechanism for generating the mass of active light neutrinos (both Majorana and Dirac) is considered on the basis of effective field theory. In particular, we review certain models that extend the Standard Model by introducing heavy sterile neutrinos and discuss the corresponding mechanisms for generating small masses of active neutrinos. Two Appendices briefly describe the properties of Weyl, Dirac, and Majorana spinors in four dimensions and the interrelations between such spinors. The third Appendix provides a simple proof of the theorem on Takagi diagonalization of a mass matrix for Majorana fermions.

Abstract:Neutrinos may acquire small Dirac or Majorana masses by new low-energy physics in terms of the chiral gravitational anomaly, as proposed by Dvali and Funcke (2016). This model predicts fast neutrino decays, $\nu_i\to\nu_j+\phi$ and $\nu_i\to\bar{\nu}_j+\phi$, where the gravi-majorons $\phi$ are pseudoscalar Nambu-Goldstone bosons. The final-state neutrino and antineutrino distributions differ depending on the Dirac or Majorana mass of the initial state. This opens a channel for distinguishing these cases, for example in the spectrum of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. In particular, we put bounds on the neutrino lifetimes in the Majorana case, ${\tau_2}/{m_2}> 1.1\times 10^{-3}(6.7\times 10^{-4})~{\rm s/eV}$ and ${\tau_3}/{m_3}> 2.2\times 10^{-5}(1.3\times 10^{-4})~{\rm s/eV}$ at 90% CL for hierarchical (degenerate) masses, using data from experiments searching for antineutrino appearance from the Sun.

Abstract:We investigate the see-saw mechanism for generally non-fine-tuned $n \times n$ mass matrices involving both Dirac and Majorana neutrinos. We specifically show that the number of naturally light neutrinos cannot exceed half of the dimension of the considered mass matrix. Furthermore, we determine a criterion for mass matrix textures leading to light Dirac neutrinos with the see-saw mechanism. Especially, we study $4 \times 4$ and $6 \times 6$ mass matrix textures and give some examples in order to highlight these types of textures. Next, we present a model scheme based on non-Abelian and discrete symmetries fulfilling the above mentioned criterion for light Dirac neutrinos. Finally, we investigate the connection between symmetries and the invariants of a mass matrix on a formal level.
Understanding small neutrino mass and its implication

Abstract:We have derived previously the relations between the neutrino masses and mixing angles in a dispersive analysis on the mixing of neutral leptonic states. The only involved assumption is that the electroweak symmetry of the Standard Model (SM) is restored at a high energy scale in some new physics scenario, which diminishes the box diagrams responsible for the mixing. Here we include corrections to the analysis up to three loops, arising from exchanges of additional neutral and charged scalars in the electroweak symmetric phase. The solution to the dispersion relation for the $\mu^-e^+$-$\mu^+e^-$ mixing generates a typical neutrino mass $m_\nu\sim O(1)$ eV in the SM unambiguously. The solution also favors the normal ordering of the neutrino masses over the inverted one, and links the large electroweak symmetry restoration, i.e., new physics scale to the small neutrino mass.
