Abstract:The orbital motions and spin-axis rotations of extended bodies are traditionally considered to be coupled only by tidal mechanisms. The orbit-spin coupling hypothesis supplies an additional mechanism. A reversing torque on rotating extended bodies is identified. The torque effects an exchange of angular momentum between the reservoirs of the orbital and rotational motions. The axis of the torque is constrained to lie within the equatorial plane of the subject body. Hypothesis testing to date has focused on the response to the putative torque of the Martian atmosphere. Atmospheric global circulation model simulations reveal that an episodic strengthening and weakening of meridional overturning circulations should be observable and is diagnostic in connection with the triggering of Martian planet-encircling dust storms. Spacecraft observations obtained during the earliest days of the 2018 Martian global dust storm document a strong intensification of atmospheric meridional motions as predicted under this hypothesis. We review implications for atmospheric physics, for investigations of planetary orbital evolution with rotational energy dissipation, and for theories of gravitation.

Abstract:The recent addition of orbit-spin coupling torques to atmospheric global circulation models has enabled successful years-in-advance forecasts of global and regional-scale dust storms on Mars. Here we explore the applicability of the orbit-spin coupling mechanism for understanding and forecasting anomalous weather and climate events on Earth. We calculate the time history of orbit-spin coupling torques on the Earth system for the interval from 1860-2040. The torque exhibits substantial variability on decadal to bidecadal timescales. Deep minima recur at intervals from 15-26 years; eight such episodes are documented within the study period prior to 2020. Each of the identified torque minima corresponds in time to an episode of widespread drought in the Western USA extending over several years. The multiyear droughts of the 1930s, the 1950s, the mid-1970s, the early 1990s, and of 2011-2015 were each coincident in time with orbit-spin coupling torque minima. The upcoming torque minimum of 2030 is the deepest such minimum of the 180-yr study interval. A multiyear episode of widespread drought in the Western USA is likely to be underway by 2028 plus or minus 4 years (2 standard deviations). The potential benefits to societies of improved drought predictions justify an immediate high-priority effort to include forcing by orbit-spin coupling within state-of-the-art Earth system GCMs. Future targeted numerical modeling investigations are likely to yield forecasts with considerably lower uncertainties and with much improved temporal resolution in comparison to that obtained here.

Abstract:Orbit spin coupling is proposed as an alternative to planetary tidal models for the excitation of solar variability as a function of time. Momentum sourced from the orbital angular momenta of solar system bodies is deposited within the circulating fluid envelopes of the Sun and planets in this hypothesis. A reversing torque acts about an axis lying within the Sun's equatorial plane. The torque gives rise to tangential differential accelerations of solar materials as a function of longitude, latitude, depth, and time. The accelerations pulse in amplitude, and change sign, on timescales corresponding to the periods, beats, and harmonics of inner and outer planet orbital motions. In contrast to planetary tidal models, no special amplification mechanism may be required, as estimated peak accelerations are about 2 orders of magnitude larger than the largest tidal accelerations. Organized mass motions driven by the torque may be incorporated in dynamo simulations through the flow velocity term of the MHD induction equation. The spatiotemporal variability of flow velocities may then influence the variability with time of solar magnetic activity. We provide torque values at 1 day timesteps for the years 1660 to 2220. We discuss the time variability of the torque in juxtaposition with SIDC monthly sunspot numbers from 1750 to present. We investigate Hale cycle synchronization, and the variability with time of the total solar irradiance, with reference to outer and inner planet contributions respectively. We propose a 3 component model for understanding and simulating the solar magnetic cycle, which includes processes internal to the Sun, external forcing, due to orbit spin coupling, and a time-delay, or system memory, component. This model supplies a physical explanation for the observed variability with time of Schwabe cycle periods and Hale cycle periods from 1712 to present.

Surprising Spin-orbit Resonances of Rocky Planets

Abstract:Recent works suggest that, in multiplanetary systems, a close-in exoplanet can sometimes avoid becoming tidally locked to its host star if it is captured into a secular spin-orbit resonance with a companion planet. In such a resonance, the planet remains at a sub-synchronous spin rate and an appreciable obliquity (the planet's spin-orbit misalignment angle). However, many of these works have only considered planets with fluid-like rheologies. Recent observations suggest that planets up to a few Earth masses may be rocky and thus may have an appreciable rigidity. In this work, we study the spin-orbit dynamics of such rigid planets using a linear dissipative tidal model and not enforcing principal axis rotation about the body's shortest principal axis. We identify a new class of spin-orbit resonances when the planet spins at twice its orbital frequency. These resonances exist at nonzero obliquity and spontaneously excite non-principal-axis rotation upon resonance capture. While these resonances eventually disappear as tidal dissipation damps the obliquity to zero (and the body returns to principal-axis rotation), they still modify the spin evolutionary history of the planet. Such resonances may enhance the prevalence of secular spin-orbit resonances in exoplanetary systems.

Abstract:The periapsis shift (PS) of spinning test particles in the equatorial plane of an arbitrary stationary and axisymmetric spacetime is studied using the post-Newtonian method. The result is expressed as a half-integer power series of , where is the spacetime mass and is the semilatus rectum. The coefficients of the series are polynomials of the particle spin, the asymptotic expansion coefficients of the metric functions, and the eccentricity of the orbit. The particle spin is shown to have a similar effect as the Lense-Thirring (LT) effect on the PS, and both of them appear from the order in the PS. The coupling between the spacetime and particle spins will increase (or decrease) the PS if they are parallel (or antiparallel). For Jupiter and Saturn rotating around the Sun and exceptionally designed satellites around Mercury and Moon, and the space-based gravitational wave observatories LISA and TaiJi around the Sun, the particle spin effect can be comparable to or even larger than the LT one in size. The PS in other spacetime studied are is not distinguishable from that in the Kerr spacetime to the order.

Sporadic Spin-Orbit Variations in Compact Multi-planet Systems and their Influence on Exoplanet Climate

Abstract:Climate modeling has shown that tidally influenced terrestrial exoplanets, particularly those orbiting M-dwarfs, have unique atmospheric dynamics and surface conditions that may enhance their likelihood to host viable habitats. However, sporadic libration and rotation induced by planetary interactions, such as that due to mean motion resonances (MMRs) in compact planetary systems may destabilize attendant exoplanets away from synchronized states (or 1:1 spin-orbit ratio). Here, we use a three-dimensional N-Rigid-Body integrator and an intermediately-complex general circulation model to simulate the evolving climates of TRAPPIST-1 e and f with different orbital and spin evolution pathways. Planet f perturbed by MMR effects with chaotic spin-variations are colder and dryer compared to their synchronized counterparts due to the zonal drift of the substellar point away from open ocean basins of their initial eyeball states. On the other hand, the differences between perturbed and synchronized planet e are minor due to higher instellation, warmer surfaces, and reduced climate hysteresis. This is the first study to incorporate the time-dependent outcomes of direct gravitational N-Rigid-Body simulations into 3D climate modeling of extrasolar planets and our results show that planets at the outer edge of the habitable zones in compact multiplanet systems are vulnerable to rapid global glaciations. In the absence of external mechanisms such as orbital forcing or tidal heating, these planets could be trapped in permanent snowball states.

Abstract:The planetary obliquity plays a significant role in determining physical properties of planetary surfaces and climate. As direct detection is constrained due to the present observation accuracy, kinetic theories are helpful to predict the evolution of the planetary obliquity. Here the coupling effect between the eccentric Kozai-Lidov (EKL) effect and the equilibrium tide is extensively investigated, the planetary obliquity performs to follow two kinds of secular evolution paths, based on the conservation of total angular momentum. The equilibrium timescale of the planetary obliquity $t_{\mathrm{eq}}$ varies along with $r_{t}$, which is defined as the initial timescale ratio of the tidal dissipation and secular perturbation. We numerically derive the linear relationship between $t_{\mathrm{eq}}$ and $r_{t}$ with the maximum likelihood method. The spin-axis orientation of S-type terrestrials orbiting M-dwarfs reverses over $90^\circ$ when $r_{t} > 100$, then enter the quasi-equilibrium state between $40^\circ$ and $60^\circ$, while the maximum obliquity can reach $130^\circ$ when $r_{t} > 10^4 $. Numerical simulations show that the maximum obliquity increases with the semi-major axis ratio $a_1$/$a_2$, but is not so sensitive to the eccentricity $e_2$. The likelihood of obliquity flip for S-type terrestrials in general systems with $a_2 < 45$ AU is closely related to $m_1$. The observed potential oblique S-type planets HD 42936 b, GJ 86 Ab and $\tau$ Boot Ab are explored to have a great possibility to be head-down over the secular evolution of spin.

A comprehensive comparison of spin-up and spin-down episodes of 4U 1538-522 observed with NuSTAR

Abstract:4U 1538-522 is a persistent high mass X-ray binary which exhibits secular spin evolution. In 2019, it underwent a torque reversal from spinning up to spinning down. We performed an extensive study using four NuSATR observations to compare temporal and spectral properties during different states. We observed no abrupt change in luminosity associated with the torque reversal. In addition, the pulse profile, the spectral shape and the power spectrum remained unchanged before and after the torque reversal. The orbital and super-orbital modulation profiles also showed no significant changes. We discuss possible mechanisms for the torque reversal and conclude that it is unlikely to be caused by interactions between the accretion disk and the magnetosphere. Instead, the transition of accretion modes in spherical accretion may be a plausible explanation.

Abstract:Purpose: The 1:1 spin-orbit resonance phenomenon is widely observed in binary asteroid systems. We aim to investigate the intrinsic dynamic mechanism behind the phenomenon under the coupled influence of the secondary's rotation and orbital motion. Methods: The planar sphere–ellipsoid model is used to approximate the synchronous binary asteroid. The Lindstedt–Poincaré method is applied on the spin-orbit problem to find its explicit quasi-periodic solution. Results: Numerical simulations demonstrate that analytical solutions truncated at high orders are accurate enough to describe the orbital and rotational motions of the synchronous binary asteroid. With the help of the solution, we are able to identify in a more accurate way the stable region for the synchronous state by using the Lyapunov characteristic exponent. Moreover, the resonances that determine the boundary of the stability region are identified. Conclusion: The stable synchronous state requires a small eccentricity of the mutual orbit but permits a large libration angle of the secondary. The anti-correlation of and is confirmed. The stable region for a very elongated secondary is small, which helps explain the lack of such secondaries in observations (see Table 1 in Pravec et al. in Icarus 267:267–295, 2016). Findings of this study provide insights into the inherent dynamics that determine the rotational states of a synchronous binary asteroid.

Earth-like exoplanets in spin-orbit resonances: climate dynamics, 3D atmospheric chemistry, and observational signatures

Abstract:Terrestrial exoplanets around M- and K-type stars are important targets for atmospheric characterisation. Such planets are likely tidally locked with the order of spin-orbit resonances (SORs) depending on eccentricity. We explore the impact of SORs on 3D atmospheric dynamics and chemistry, employing a 3D coupled Climate-Chemistry Model to simulate Proxima Centauri b in 1:1 and 3:2 SOR. For a 1:1 SOR, Proxima Centauri b is in the Rhines rotator circulation regime with dominant zonal gradients (global mean surface temperature 229 K). An eccentric 3:2 SOR warms Proxima Centauri b to 262 K with gradients in the meridional direction. We show how a complex interplay between stellar radiation, orbit, atmospheric circulation, and (photo)chemistry determines the 3D ozone distribution. Spatial variations in ozone column densities align with the temperature distribution and are driven by stratospheric circulation mechanisms. Proxima Centauri b in a 3:2 SOR demonstrates additional atmospheric variability, including daytime-nighttime cycles in water vapour of ${+}$55% to ${-}$34% and ozone ($\pm5.2$%) column densities and periastron-apoastron water vapour cycles of ${+}$17% to ${-}$10%. Synthetic emission spectra for the spectral range of the Large Interferometer For Exoplanets fluctuate by up to 36 ppm with orbital phase angle for a 1:1 SOR due to 3D spatial and temporal asymmetries. The homogeneous atmosphere for the 3:2 SOR results in relatively constant emission spectra and provides an observational discriminant from the 1:1 SOR. Our work emphasizes the importance of understanding the 3D nature of exoplanet atmospheres and associated spectral variations to determine habitability and interpret atmospheric spectra.

Tidal excitation of the obliquity of Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of M-dwarf stars

Abstract:Close-in planets undergo strong tidal interactions with the parent star that modify their spins and orbits. In the two-body problem, the final stage for tidal evolution is the synchronisation of the rotation and orbital periods, and the alignment of the planet spin axis with the normal to the orbit (zero planet obliquity). The orbital eccentricity is also damped to zero, but over a much longer timescale, that may exceed the lifetime of the system. For non-zero eccentricities, the rotation rate can be trapped in spin-orbit resonances that delay the evolution towards the synchronous state. Here we show that capture in some spin-orbit resonances may also excite the obliquity to high values rather than damp it to zero. Depending on the system parameters, obliquities of 60 to 80 degrees can be maintained throughout the entire lifetime of the planet. This unexpected behaviour is particularly important for Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of M-dwarf stars, as it may help to sustain temperate environments and thus more favourable conditions for life.

A generic frequency dependence for the atmospheric tidal torque of terrestrial planets

Abstract:Thermal atmospheric tides have a strong impact on the rotation of terrestrial planets. They can lock these planets into an asynchronous rotation state of equilibrium. We aim at characterizing the dependence of the tidal torque resulting from the semidiurnal thermal tide on the tidal frequency, the planet orbital radius, and the atmospheric surface pressure. The tidal torque is computed from full 3D simulations of the atmospheric climate and mean flows using a generic version of the LMDZ general circulation model (GCM) in the case of a nitrogen-dominated atmosphere. Numerical results are discussed with the help of an updated linear analytical framework. Power scaling laws governing the evolution of the torque with the planet orbital radius and surface pressure are derived. The tidal torque exhibits i) a thermal peak in the vicinity of synchronization, ii) a resonant peak associated with the excitation of the Lamb mode in the high frequency range, and iii) well defined frequency slopes outside these resonances. These features are well explained by our linear theory. Whatever the star-planet distance and surface pressure, the torque frequency spectrum -- when rescaled with the relevant power laws -- always presents the same behaviour. This allows us to provide a single and easily usable empirical formula describing the atmospheric tidal torque over the whole parameter space. With such a formula, the effect of the atmospheric tidal torque can be implemented in evolutionary models of the rotational dynamics of a planet in a computationally efficient, and yet relatively accurate way.

Obliquity Evolution of Circumstellar Planets in Sun-like Stellar Binaries

Abstract:Changes in planetary obliquity, or axial tilt, influence the climates on Earth-like planets. In the solar system, the Earth's obliquity is stabilized due to interactions with our moon and the resulting {small amplitude variations ($\sim$2.4\degree)} are beneficial for advanced life. Most Sun-like stars have at least one stellar companion and the habitability of circumstellar exoplanets is shaped by their stellar companion. We show that a stellar companion can dramatically change whether {Earth-like obliquity stability is} possible through planetary orbital precession relative to the binary orbit or resonant pumping of the obliquity through spin-orbit interactions. We present a new formalism for the planetary spin precession that accounts for orbital misalignments between the planet and binary. Using numerical modeling in $\alpha$ Centauri AB we show: a stark contrast between the planetary obliquity variations depending on the host star, planetary neighbors limit the possible spin states for {Earth-like obliquity stability}, and the presence of a moon can destabilize the obliquity, defying our Earth-based expectations. An Earth-like rotator orbiting the primary star would experience {small} obliquity variations for 87\%, 74\%, or 54\% of Solar type binaries, depending on the mass of the primary (0.8, 1.0, or 1.2 M$_\odot$, respectively). Thus, Earth-like planets likely experience much larger obliquity variations, with more extreme climates, unless they are in specific states, such as orbiting nearly planar with the binary and rotating retrograde (backwards) like Venus.

The Spin-Orbit Misalignment of TOI-1842b: The First Measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin Effect for a Warm Sub-Saturn around a Massive Star

Abstract:The mechanisms responsible for generating spin-orbit misalignments in exoplanetary systems are still not fully understood. It is unclear whether these misalignments are related to the migration of hot Jupiters or are a consequence of general star and planet formation processes. One promising method to address this question is to constrain the distribution of spin-orbit angle measurements for a broader range of planets beyond hot Jupiters. In this work, we present the sky-projected obliquity ($\lambda=-68.1_{-14.7}^{+21.2} \,^{\circ}$) for the warm sub-Saturn TOI-1842b, obtained through a measurement of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect using WIYN/NEID. Using the projected obliquity, the stellar rotation period obtained from the TESS light curve, and the projected rotation velocity from spectral analysis, we infer the 3D spin-orbit angle ($\psi$) to be $\psi=73.3^{+16.3}_{-12.9} \,^{\circ}$. As the first spin-orbit angle determination made for a sub-Saturn-mass planet around a massive ($M_{\rm *}=1.45 \,{\rm M_\odot}$) star, our result presents an opportunity to examine the orbital geometries for new regimes of planetary systems. When combined with archival measurements, our observations of TOI-1842b support the hypothesis that the previously established prevalence of misaligned systems around hot, massive stars may be driven by planet-planet dynamical interactions. In massive stellar systems, multiple gas giants are more likely to form and can then dynamically interact with each other to excite spin-orbit misalignments.

Repercussions of thermal atmospheric tides on the rotation of terrestrial planets in the habitable zone

Abstract:Semidiurnal atmospheric thermal tides are important for terrestrial exoplanets in the habitable zone of their host stars. With solid tides, they torque these planets, thus contributing to determine their rotation states as well as their climate. Given the complex dynamics of thermal tides, analytical models are essential to understand its dependence on the structure and rotation of planetary atmospheres and the tidal frequency. In this context, the state of the art model proposed in the 60's by Lindzen and Chapman explains well the properties of thermal tides in the asymptotic regime of Earth-like rapid rotators but predicts a non-physical diverging tidal torque in the vicinity of the spin-orbit synchronization. In this work, we present a new model that addresses this issue by taking into account dissipative processes through a Newtonian cooling. First, we recover the tidal torque recently obtained with numerical simulations using General Circulation Models (GCM). Second, we show that the tidal response is very sensitive to the atmospheric structure, particularly to the stability with respect to convection. A strong stable stratification is able to annihilate the atmospheric tidal torque, leading to synchronization, while a convective atmosphere will be submitted to a strong torque, leading to a non-synchronized rotation state.

Abstract:The current orbital geometries of exoplanet systems offer a fossilized record of the systems' dynamical histories. A particularly rich set of dynamical mechanisms is available to exoplanets residing in multi-star systems, which may have their evolution shaped by the gravitational influence of bound stellar companions. In this work, we examine the joint distribution of stellar obliquities and orbital orientations for transiting exoplanets residing within astrometrically resolved binary and triple-star systems. We leverage existing constraints on stellar obliquities in exoplanet systems, together with astrometric measurements from Gaia DR3, to uncover a set of fully-aligned, "orderly" exoplanet systems that exhibit evidence of both spin-orbit and orbit-orbit alignment. We also find evidence that the observed distribution of orbit-orbit orientations in our sample is more strongly peaked toward alignment than an isotropic distribution. Our results may be indicative of efficient viscous dissipation by nodally recessing protoplanetary disks, demonstrating a regime in which stellar companions produce and maintain order in planetary systems, rather than enhancing misalignments.

Abstract:Having a massive moon has been considered as a primary mechanism for stabilized planetary obliquity, an example of which being our Earth. This is, however, not always consistent with the exoplanetary cases. This article details the discovery of an alternative mechanism, namely that planets orbiting around binary stars tend to have low spin-axis variations. This is because the large quadrupole potential of the stellar binary could speed up the planetary orbital precession, and detune the system out of secular spin-orbit resonances. Consequently, habitable zone planets around the stellar binaries in low inclination orbits hold higher potential for regular seasonal changes comparing to their single star analogues.

An Earth Encounter As the Cause of Chaotic Dynamics in Binary Asteroid (35107) 1991VH

Abstract:Among binary asteroids, (35107) 1991VH stands out as unique given the likely chaotic rotation within its secondary component. The source of this excited dynamical state is unknown. In this work we demonstrate that a past close encounter with Earth could have provided the necessary perturbation to allow the natural internal dynamics, characterized by spin-orbit coupling, to evolve the system into its current dynamical state. In this hypothesis, the secondary of 1991VH was previously in a classical 1:1 spin-orbit resonance with an orbit period likely between 28-35 hours before being perturbed by an Earth encounter within $\sim80,000$ km. We find if the energy dissipation within the secondary is relatively inefficient, this excited dynamical state could persist to today and produce the observed ground-based measurements. Coupled with the orbital history of 1991VH, we can then place a constraint on the tidal dissipation parameters of the secondary.
