Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based multi-metallic nanostructures show great promise as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell cathodes. Herein, we report a simple, one-step surfactant-directed synthetic strategy to directly synthesize tri-metallic PtPdNi mesoporous nanospheres (PtPdNi MNs) in a high yield. The synthesis could be accomplished in aqueous solution at mild reaction temperature (40 degrees C) without needing any organic solvent, yielding well-dispersed PtPdNi MNs with uniform shape and narrow size distribution. Benefitting from their unique mesoporous and highly open structure and tri-metallic composition, the as-synthesized PtPdNi MNs demonstrate superior catalytic activity and stability for ORR in acidic solution in comparison with PtPdNi nanodendrites (PtPdNi NDs), PtPd MNs and commercial Pt/C catalyst. High index surface-exposed and composition-graded PtCu3@Pt3Cu@Pt nanodendrites for high-performance oxygen reduction

Abstract:Alloying and nanostructuring are two strategies used to facilitate the efficient electrocatalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by Pt, where the high index surfaces (HISs) of Pt exhibit superior activity for ORR. Here, we report the fabrication of PtCu3 nanodendrites possessing rich spiny branches exposing n(111) × (110) HISs. The dendrites were formed through an etching-modulated seeding and growing strategy. Specifically, an oxidative atmosphere was initially applied to form the concaved nanocubes of the Pt-Cu seeds, which was then switched to an inert atmosphere to promote an explosive growth of dendrites. Separately, the oxidative or inert atmosphere failed to produce this hyperbranched structure. Electrochemical dealloying of the PtCu3 nanodendrites produced Pt3Cu shells with Pt-rich surfaces where HIS-exposed dendrite structures were maintained. The resulting PtCu3@Pt3 nanodendrites in 0.1 M HClO4 exhibited excellent mass and area specific activities for ORR, which were 14 and 24 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C, respectively. DFT calculations revealed that Cu alloying and HISs both contributed to the significantly enhanced activity of Pt, and that the oxygen binding energy on the step sites of HISs on the PtCu3@Pt3 nanodendrites approached the optimal value to achieve a near peak-top ORR activity.Atmosphere-modulated synthesis followed by electrochemical dealloying produces exposed high index surfaces on the composition-graded nanodendrites of PtCu3@Pt3 to achieve mass and area activities of Pt that are respectively 14 and 24 times higher than that of pure Pt catalyst.

Abstract:Structure engineering strategies such as core-shell and hollow nanostructures are effective pathways to improve the utilization of noble metals for catalysis. However, nowadays materials design based on these strategies still largely rely on precious metal templates. Herein, the epitaxial growth of highly crystalline Pt3 Ni overlayer on earth-abundant nickel carbide is reported, forming Ni3 C@Pt3 Ni core-shell nanoparticles with a well-defined interface through a new lattice-match-directed synthetic strategy. Derived from such core-shell nanostructures, ultrathin highly crystalline Pt3 Ni nanocages have an advantageous configuration of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)-favored facets and inherently high active surface area for the ORR, bringing high mass activity and specific activity as much as 4.71 A mgPt -1 and 5.14 mA cm-2 , which are 26 and 20 times to that of commercial Pt/C, respectively. This novel epitaxial growth of platinum opens up new avenues to rationally design highly active and economical electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Shape-controlled Pt-based bimetallic nanocrystals with ultrathin Pt-rich surfaces are appealing electrocatalysts for some key electrochemical reactions such as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) because of the synergistic tuning of topological atom configuration and strengthened electronic effects. However, it is rather challenging to fabricate such particular structures that can remain intact in harsh electrochemical environments, as such Pt-based nanocatalysts are unable to simultaneously achieve both unparalleled activity and robust stability. Here, a facile surface engineering strategy is proposed and employed to atomically tailor the near-surface structure of the Pt1.5Ni octahedra. The engineered Pt-Ni octahedra consist of an ultrathin Pt-rich shell (similar to two atomic layers) and Pt-rich bulk composition. The optimized octahedral catalyst exhibits superior specific and mass activity (7.7 mA/cm(2) Pt and 1.9 A/mg Pt at 0.9 V) for ORR, similar to 20 and similar to 10 times higher than commercial Pt/C, respectively. The ligand and strain effects arising from the near-surface engineering are unraveled to be responsible for the remarkable ORR activity. Moreover, it shows robust stability with just 9.2% decay in mass activity after accelerated degradation tests (ADTs), as its compositional nature prevents surface Pt atoms and interior Ni atoms from diffusion and dissolution, compared with a decrease of 33% for commercial Pt/C. Our atomical engineered surface strategy illustrates a facile and effective design for a class of Pt-based nanocatalysts with excellent activity and stability.

Abstract:Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy line profiles with Ångstrom resolution, we uncover novel core-shell fine structures in a series of catalytically active dealloyed Pt(x)Ni(1-x) core-shell nanoparticles, showing the formation of unusual near-surface Ni-enriched inner shells. The radial location and the composition of the Ni-enriched inner shells were sensitively dependent on the initial alloy compositions. We further discuss how these self-organized Ni-enriched inner shells play a key role in maintaining surface lattice strain and thus control the surface catalytic activity for oxygen reduction.

The catalyst has a uniform core-shell structure with an ultrathin atomic-jagged Pt nanowire core and a mesoporous Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni framework shell, possessing high electrocatalytic activity, stability and Pt utilisation efficiency. For the oxygen reduction reaction, the anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni core-shell framework nanowires demonstrated exceptional mass and specific activities of 6.69 A/mg pt and 8.42 mA/cm 2 (at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode), and the catalyst exhibited high stability with negligible activity decay after 50,000 cycles. Abstract:The near-surface structure of the Pt-based alloy including the surface and subsurface structures is prominent to their electrocatalytic performance. Modulating the near-surface structure of PtCo intermetallics with small particle size could efficiently optimize the binding force between Pt and oxygen and finally enhance its oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance. Here we simultaneously achieve the size controlling and surface modulation of intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) in a weak-oxidative confined space with abundant uncoordinated oxygen atoms. 1–2 atomic layers of concave Pt-rich surface were successfully constructed on 4 nm L1 0 -PtCo core after removing Co—O species which is derived from the segregation of the subsurface Co to the surface induced by the uncoordinated oxygen atoms. Owing to the elaborate structure, PtCo-1000/C catalyst shows significant improvement in both activity (1.290 A·mg Pt −1 and 1.529 mA·cm Pt −2 at 0.9 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and stability (85.2% of initial mass activity after accelerated degression tests (ADTs)) even the production is scaled up to gram level. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the cave Pt site optimizes the protonation of *O, which finally boosts the ORR performance.

Abstract:We demonstrate how shape selectivity and optimized surface composition result in exceptional oxygen reduction activity of octahedral PtNi nanoparticles (NPs). The alloy octahedra were obtained by utilizing a facile, completely surfactant-free solvothermal synthesis. We show that the choice of precursor ligands controls the shape, while the reaction time tunes the surface Pt:Ni composition. The 9.5 nm sized PtNi octahedra reached a 10-fold surface area-specific (similar to 3.14 mA/cm(Pt)(2)) as well as an unprecedented 10-fold Pt mass based (similar to 1.45 A/mg(Pt)) activity gain over the state-of-art Pt electrocatalyst, approaching the theoretically predicted limits.

Abstract:The search for high-performance non-platinum (Pt) electrocatalysts is the most challenging issue for fuel cell technology. Creating bimetallic non-Pt nanocrystals (NCs) with core/shell structures or alloy features has widely been explored as the most effective way for enhancing their electrochemical properties but still suffered from undesirable performance due to the limited interactions between the different components. By addressing the above issue, we report on a new class of active and stable bimetallic non-Pt electrocatalysts with palladium (Pd) icosahedra as the core and nickel (Ni) decorating the surface toward cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under alkaline conditions. The optimized Pd6Ni icosahedra with unique interaction between an icosahedral Pd core and surface Ni yield the highest ORR activity with a mass activity of 0.22 A mg(pd)(-1), which is better than those of the conventional Pd6Ni icosahedra with alloy surfaces or Pd-rich surfaces, and even two times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C (0.11 A mg(pt)(-1)), representing one of the best non-Pt electrocatalysts. Simulations reveal that the Pd icosahedra decorated with Ni atoms emerged in the subsurface can weaken the interaction between the adsorbed oxygen and Pd (111) facet and enhance the ORR activities due to an obvious shift of d-band center. More significantly, under electrochemical accelerated durability test, the Pd6Ni icosahedra can endure at least 10,000 cycles with negligible activity decay and structural change. The present work demonstrates an important advance in surface tuning of bimetallic NCs as high-performance non-Pt catalysts for catalysis, energy conversion, and beyond.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic activity of transition‐metal‐based compounds is strongly related to the spin states of metal atoms. However, the ways for regulation of spin states of catalysts are still limited, and the underlying relationship between the spin states and catalytic activities remains unclear. Herein, for the first time, by taking NiII‐based compounds without high or low spin states for example, it is shown that their spin states can be delocalized after introducing structural distortion to the atomic layers. The delocalized spin states for Ni atoms can provide not only high electrical conductivity but also low adsorption energy between the active sites and reaction intermediates for the system. As expected, the ultrathin nanosheets of nickel‐chalcogenides with structural distortions show dramatically enhanced activity in electrocatalytic oxygen evolution compared to their corresponding bulk samples. This work establishes new way for the design of advanced electrocatalysts in transition‐metal‐based compounds via regulation of spin states.
Structure Evolution of PtCu Nanoframes from Disordered to Ordered for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Crystal structure engineering of platinum (Pt) based disordered alloys to chemically ordered intermetallics has triggered increasing attention in promoting their performance towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, a systematic experiment of comparing the catalytic performance in different crystal structures is rarely reported. Herein, the widely-watched PtCu nanoframes (atomically disordered) are firstly synthesised to in-vestigate their structure-properties relationship. Subsequently, rhombohedral PtCu intermetallics (L11 structured, atomically ordered) which were rarely reported before are fabricated by appropriate high temperature treatment. The L11-PtCu delivers significantly enhanced durability (only 15 % attenuation after 30,000 cycles) while decreased initial activity (0.44 A mgPt-1) for ORR compared with their disordered counterpart. In virtue of in-situ STEM experiment assisted by the state-of-the-art 3D tomography, we reveal that the ordering process improves the resistance against Cu leaching meanwhile results in the collapse and aggregation of the NFs. This work provides a visual understanding of Pt based electrocatalyst in different crystal structures for proton exchange membrane fuel cells in the future.

Abstract:The rational synthesis of single-layer noble metal directly anchored on support materials is an elusive target to accomplish for a long time. This paper reports well-defined single-layer Pt (Pt-SL) clusters anchored on ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets—as a new frontier in electrocatalysis. The structural evolution of Pt-SL/TiO2 via self-assembly of single Pt atoms (Pt-SA) is systematically recorded. Significantly, the Pt atoms of Pt-SL/TiO2 possess a unique electronic configuration with PtPt covalent bonds surrounded by abundant unpaired electrons. This Pt-SL/TiO2 catalyst presents enhanced electrochemical performance toward diverse electrocatalytic reactions (such as the hydrogen evolution reaction and the oxygen reduction reaction) compared with Pt-SA, multilayer Pt nanoclusters, and Pt nanoparticles, suggesting an efficient new type of catalyst that can be achieved by constructing single-layer atomic clusters on supports.

Abstract:Electrocatalysts play a pivotal role in advancing proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) for hydrogen energy applications. In this study, we investigate a novel PtCu/C N electrocatalyst synthesized via a gram-scale synthesis approach, which demonstrates remarkable activity and stability in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The catalyst's effectiveness stems from its unique structure, combining bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) and an N-doped carbon support. Employing identical location transmission electron microscopy (IL-TEM) imaging, we observe significant NP structure reorganization upon activation influenced by the upper limiting potential. Notably, the PtCu/C N catalyst activated to 1.0 V surpasses the United States Department of Energy (DOE) target for ORR activity by 3.3-fold. These findings underscore the potential of this catalyst in enhancing the performance of PEMFCs, marking a significant advancement in hydrogen energy technology.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their derivatives have been widely applied as electrocatalysts owing to their unique nanoscale pore configurations, stable periodic structures, abundant coordination sites and high surface area. This work aims to construct a non-thermodynamically stable Pt-N2 coordination active site by electrochemically modifying platinum (Pt) single atoms into a fully conjugated 2D COF as conductive agent-free and pyrolysis-free electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In addition to maximizing atomic utilization, single-atom catalysts with definite structures can be used to investigate catalytic mechanisms and structure-activity relationships. In this work, in-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations reveal that a nitrogen-rich graphene analogue COF not only exhibits a favorable metal-support effect for Pt, adjusting the binding energy between Pt sites to H* intermediates by forming unique Pt-N2 instead of the typical Pt-N4 coordination environment, but also enhances electron transport ability and structural stability, showing both conductivity and stability in acidic environments.
