Abstract:In this Letter, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate the formation of a super bound state in a continuum (BIC) on a photonic crystal flat band. This unique state simultaneously exhibits an enhanced quality factor and near-zero group velocity across an extended region of the Brillouin zone. It is achieved at the topological transition when a symmetry-protected BIC pinned at k=0 merges with two Friedrich-Wintgen quasi-BICs, which arise from the destructive interference between lossy photonic modes of opposite symmetries. As a proof of concept, we employ the ultraflat super BIC to demonstrate three-dimensional optical trapping of individual particles. Abstract:Obtaining bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystals gives rise to the realization of resonances with high quality factors for lasing and nonlinear applications. For BIC cavities in finite-size photonic crystals, the bulk resonance band turns into discrete modes with different mode profiles and radiation patterns. Here, photonic-crystal BIC cavities encircled by the photonic bandgap of lateral heterostructures are designed. The mirror-like photonic bandgap exhibits strong side leakage suppression to confine the mode profile in the designed cavity. Multiple bulk quantized modes are observed both in simulation and experiment. After exciting the BIC cavity at different positions, different resonance peaks are observed. The physical origin of the dependence between the resonance peak and the illuminating position is explained by analyzing the mode profile distribution and further verified by numerical simulations. Our findings have potential applications regarding the mode selectivity in BIC devices to manipulate the lasing mode in photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers or the radiation pattern in nonlinear optics.

Abstract:Polarization singularities and topological vortices in photonic crystal slabs centered at bound states in the continuum (BICs) can be attributed to zero amplitude of polarization vectors. We show that such topological features are also observed in optical forces within the vicinity of BIC, around which the force vectors wind in the momentum space. The topological force carries force topological charge and can be used for trapping and repelling nanoparticles. By tailoring asymmetry of the photonic crystal slab, topological force will contain spinning behavior and shifted force zeros, which can lead to three-dimensional asymmetric trapping. Several off-Γ BICs generate multiple force zeros with various force distribution patterns. Our findings introduce the concepts of topology to optical force around BICs and create opportunities to realize optical force vortices and enhanced reversible forces for manipulating nanoparticles and fluid flow.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BIC) have garnered considerable attention recently for their unique capacity to confine electromagnetic waves within an open or non-Hermitian system. Utilizing a variety of light confinement mechanisms, nanostructures can achieve ultra-high quality factors and intense field localization with BIC, offering advantages such as long-living resonance modes, adaptable light control, and enhanced light-matter interactions, paving the way for innovative developments in photonics. This review outlines novel functionality and performance enhancements by synergizing optical BIC with diverse nanostructures, delivering an in-depth analysis of BIC designs in gratings, photonic crystals, waveguides, and metasurfaces. Additionally, we showcase the latest advancements of BIC in 2D material platforms and suggest potential trajectories for future research.

Abstract:Avoided crossing of resonances and merging multiple bound states in the continuum (BICs) are parallel means for tailoring the physical properties of BICs. Herein, we introduce a concept of super quasi-BIC for photonic crystal (PhC) systems where its quality (Q) factor is boosted in both parametric and momentum spaces. A super quasi-BIC with substantial enhancement of Q factor can be achieved in a finite PhC by combining avoided crossing of two symmetry-protected (SP) quasi-BICs in parametric space and merging BICs in momentum space simultaneously. Of note, analytical theory shows that the proposed mechanism results in the transition of asymptotic behavior of the Q factor over the numbers of resonators from N-2 to exclusive N-3 for SP BICs, which is highly significant for realizing quasi-BICs in a compact PhC. Microwave experiments are performed to validate the theoretical results. Our results provide a paradigm shift for manipulating the physical properties quasi-BICs in finite PhC structures, which can also be generalized to the two-dimensional PhC slab case. It would facilitate various applications, including but not limited to low-threshold lasing and high figure-of-merit sensing, etc.

Abstract:Trapping electromagnetic waves within the radiation continuum holds significant implications in the field of optical science and technology. Photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) present a distinctive approach for achieving this functionality, offering potential applications in laser systems, sensing technologies, and other domains. However, the simultaneous achievement of high Q-factors, flat-band dispersions, and wide-angle responses in photonic BICs has not yet been reported, thereby impeding their practical performance due to laser direction deviation or sample disorder. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the construction of moiré BICs in one-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC) slabs, where high-Q resonances in the entire moiré flat band are achieved. Specifically, we numerically validate that the radiation loss of moiré BICs can be eliminated by aligning multiple topological polarization charges with all diffraction channels, enabling the strong suppression of far-field radiation from the entire moiré band. This leads to a slow decay of Q-factors away from moiré BICs in the momentum space. Moreover, it is found that Q-factors of the moiré flat band can still maintain at a high level with structural disorder. In experiments, we fabricate the designed 1D moiré PhC slab and observe both high-Q resonances and a slow decrease of Q-factors for moiré flat-band Bloch modes. Our findings hold promising implications for designing highly efficient optical devices with wide-angle responses and introduce a novel avenue for exploring BICs in moiré superlattices.

Abstract:Abstract Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are localized states despite in a radiation continuum, rendering the ultra-high quality factor for enhanced light–matter interactions and supporting exotic topological properties. So far, most of studied BICs in photonic crystal (PhC) slabs are only vertically localized, i.e. allowing propagations in the plane of slab therein but forbidding radiations, and the density of optical states (DOS) at their frequencies is limited due to the steep dispersion characteristics. Here, we report a BIC existing on a flatband of symmetry-broken PhC slab. The flatband, associated with largely reduced group velocity, significantly sharpens the DOS at the frequency of BIC, which can be realized via finely controlling broken vertical symmetry in the PhC slab. The effect of broken symmetry is revealed in a simple effective Hamiltonian near the second-order Γ point of such system. Our results show the simultaneous engineering of dispersion and leaky characteristics of modes, offering new opportunities to boost light–matter interactions and to enhance the performance of photonic devices.

Abstract:We investigate the formation of photonic bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystal slabs from an analytical perspective. Unlike the stationary at-Γ BICs which originate from the geometric symmetry, the tunable off-Γ BICs are due to the weighted destructive via the continuum interference in the vicinity of accidental symmetry when the majority of the radiation is precanceled. The symmetric compatible nature of the off-Γ BICs leads to a trapping of light that can be tuned through continuously varying the wave vector. With the analytical approach, we explain a reported experiment and predict the existence of a new BIC at an unrevealed symmetry.

Abstract:We present a detailed study of mechanically compliant, photonic-crystal-based microcavities featuring a quasi-bound state in the continuum. Such systems have recently been predicted to reduce the optical loss in Fabry-Perot-type optomechanical cavities. However, they require two identical photonic-crystal slabs facing each other, which poses a considerable challenge for experimental implementation. We investigate how such an ideal system can be simplified and still exhibit a quasi-bound state in the continuum. We find that a suspended photonic-crystal slab facing a distributed Bragg reflector realizes an optomechanical system with a quasi-bound state in the continuum. In this system, the radiative cavity loss can be eliminated to the extent that the cavity loss is dominated by dissipative loss originating from material absorption only. These proposed optomechanical cavity designs are predicted to feature optical quality factors in excess of 10^5.

Abstract:This paper proposes flat bands and quasi-bound states in the continuum (Q-BIC) in a moiré lattice. In addition to the inter-layer coupling and small rotation angle, we show that the inter-node coupling in a single-layer moiré lattice can be controlled to obtain moiré flat bands. Unlike any flat bands reported in lattices such as kagome, rhombus, Lieb, and stub, we show that the moiré lattice exhibits both singular and non-singular flat bands simultaneously. We investigate the flat band’s eigenmodes to confirm their flatness and assess their singularity. The robustness of the flat bands to variation of background permittivity ε b is studied. Moreover, by further engineering the inter-node distance, the moiré flat band states change to a quasi-bound state at a non-zero wave vector. The Q-BIC exhibit an ultra-high quality factor (Q-factor) of 2.7142 × 10 6 , ultra-low mode volume of 0.214318 µ m 3 , and very narrow linewidth centred at 350.54 THz. We demonstrate the capability of the Q-BIC for lasing and nanocavity applications. Our results show that a single-layer photonic moiré lattice provides a suitable platform to explore fundamental phenomena related to flat band systems.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are perfectly confined resonances within the radiation continuum. The novel characteristics of single BICs have been studied in great detail in various wave systems, including electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves, water waves, and elastic waves in solids. In practice, the performance of BICs is limited by the finite size of the structure, while the combination of multiple BICs can further improve the localization of resonances. In this study, we experimentally demonstrate the combination of Fabry-Perot and symmetry-protected BICs at near infrared wavelengths by employing a compound photonic crystal system composed of a photonic crystal slab and a distributed Bragg reflector, resulting in an enhanced high quality factor. Abstract:A photonic-crystal slab can support bound states in the continuum(BICs)that have infinite lifetimes but are embedded into the continuous spectrum of optical modes in free space.The formation of BICs requires a total internal reflection(TIR)condition at both interfaces between the slab and the free space.Here,we show that the TIR of Bloch waves can be directly obtained based on the generalized Fresnel equations proposed.If each of these Bloch waves picks up a phase with integer multiples of 2π for traveling a round trip,light can be perfectly guided in the slab,namely forming a BIC.A BIC solver with low computational complexity and fast convergence speed is developed,which can also work efficiently at high frequencies beyond the diffraction limit where multiple radiation channels exist.Two examples of multi-channel BICs are shown and their topological nature in momentum space is also revealed.Both can be attributed to the coincidence of the topological charges of far-field radiations from different radiation channels.The concept of the generalized TIR and the TIR-based BIC solver developed offer highly effective approaches for explorations of BICs that could have many potential applications in guided-wave optics and enhanced light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) provide an important way for creating photonic devices reliant upon optical modes with high Q-factors. However, current experimental implementations of BICs in photonic crystal (PhC) slabs only possess a certain polarization, which fundamentally restricts their use to surface-enhanced applications assisted by scalar-polarized near fields. In this work, vector BICs in PhC slabs are theoretically designed and experimentally realized. In theory, the symmetry-protected vector BICs can be constructed by tuning geometric parameters of the PhC slab, where the coalescence of eigenfrequencies for a pair of TE- and TM-like modes appears. It is found that the homogeneous superchiral fields with three orders of magnitude larger than circular polarized lights can be achieved, assisted by vector quasi-BICs. Furthermore, Si3N4 PhC slabs are experimentally fabricated and their band structures are measured. It is shown that a pair of symmetry-protected BICs with TE- and TM-like polarizations can coalesce with each other at a suitable value for the diameter of array holes, indicating the realization of vector BICs. This work can possess important applications in the field of ultrasensitive detections of molecular chirality.
Optomechanically induced optical trapping system based on photonic crystal cavities

Abstract:Optical trapping has proven to be a valuable experimental technique for precisely controlling small dielectric objects. However, due to their very nature, conventional optical traps are diffraction limited and require high intensities to confine the dielectric objects. In this work, we propose a novel optical trap based on dielectric photonic crystal nanobeam cavities, which overcomes the limitations of conventional optical traps by significant factors. This is achieved by exploiting an optomechanically induced backaction mechanism between a dielectric nanoparticle and the cavities. We perform numerical simulations to show that our trap can fully levitate a submicron-scale dielectric particle with a trap width as narrow as 56 nm. It allows for achieving a high trap stiffness, therefore, a high Q-frequency product for the particle's motion while reducing the optical absorption by a factor of 43 compared to the cases for conventional optical tweezers. Moreover, we show that multiple laser tones can be used further to create a complex, dynamic potential landscape with feature sizes well below the diffraction limit. The presented optical trapping system offers new opportunities for precision sensing and fundamental quantum experiments based on levitated particles.

Abstract:Light trapping is a constant pursuit in photonics because of its importance in science and technology. Many mechanisms have been explored, including the use of mirrors made of materials or structures that forbid outgoing waves, and bound states in the continuum that are mirror-less but based on topology. Here we report a compound method, combining lateral mirrors and bound states in the continuum in a cooperative way, to achieve a class of on-chip optical cavities that have high quality factors and small modal volumes. Specifically, light is trapped in the transverse direction by the photonic band gap of the lateral hetero-structure and confined in the vertical direction by the constellation of multiple bound states in the continuum. As a result, unlike most bound states in the continuum found in photonic crystal slabs that are de-localized Bloch modes, we achieve light-trapping in all three dimensions and experimentally demonstrate quality factors as high as Q=1.09×106 and modal volumes as low as V=17.74(λ0/n)3 in the telecommunication regime. We further prove the robustness of our method through the statistical study of multiple fabricated devices. Our work provides a new method of light trapping, which can find potential applications in photonic integration, nonlinear optics and quantum computing.
Perturbation theory for resonant states near a bound state in the continuum

Abstract:In this work, we develop a perturbation theory to analyze resonant states near a bound state in the continuum (BIC) in photonic crystal slabs. The theory allows us to rigorously determine the asymptotic behavior of $Q$-factor and the far-field polarization. We show that the resonant states near a BIC can be nearly circularly polarized if the scattering matrix is subject to a certain condition. Moreover, our theory offers a novel perspective on super-BICs and provides a clear and precise condition to efficiently identify them in both symmetric and asymmetric structures without requiring a merging process. For practical applications, we find a super-BIC in a square lattice of cylinders on a dielectric substrate. Our theory addresses the non-Hermitian nature of the system, can be generalized to treat other structures that support BICs, and has potential applications in resonance and chiral optics.
